#ServiceAboveSelf

Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain NC is where I lived as a child, and visited over the years, and has always been a sort of spiritual/mystical special place for me. Although it sits halfway up the mountain overlooking Swannanoa Valley it was hit hard by Hurricane Helene, its little creek turning into a raging river filled with boulders and trees. The pictures you see here of rocks and soil were lush green forest before Helene. The vacant land once housed buildings, now gone. Rotarians from all over Western North Carolina have recently volunteered their time and money to help clean up, repair and rebuild the Assembly—a place devoted to nature and peace, faith and love. I was blessed to join a group and do my little part! #ServiceAboveSelf

Celebrating a Masterful Win

Rory Glory: McIlroy wins 2025 Masters in playoff, completes Grand Slam Rory Glory wins the Grand Slam. Back in 2011, Rory McIlroy became a household name, but the Masters has always been a sore spot in his career. In 2011, he looked like he’d win it when he had a four-stroke lead heading into the final day. Instead, he had a disastrous last round and finished tied for 15th. The following year, weekend struggles took him out of the race. In the lead at the Masters coming into the Sunday finals but shot an 80.

Watching the 2025 Masters with my husband, Rich, who spent upteen years caddying at the Masters, you not only get a history of how every hole plays but how every player from Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Sam Sneed, Gary Player, Tom Watson etc. joined the winning circle. In this household, it’s bigger than the Super Bowl. Dinner was in front of the TV this year!

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IN WNC

Why we want to live here.

Western North Carolina (WNC) is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant cultural heritage. As rural communities grapple with the challenges posed by climate change, economic challenges and population growth, sustainable design has emerged as a focus and approach to fostering resilience and improving quality of life. Let’s discuss the ideas and principles of sustainable design.

Understanding Sustainable Design

Sustainable design focuses on minimizing negative environmental impacts while enhancing social equity and economic viability. It is an interdisciplinary approach combining architecture and interior design, landscape design, and social advocacy. The key principles and practices can include energy efficiency, use of renewable materials, water conservation, waste reduction, and the promotion of healthy living environments. Here in our local counties, where nature and community are intricately laced, sustainable design offers a pathway to preserving both the environment and the rich cultural heritage of the Appalachian way of life.

Natural

Environment

We all know that WNC is characterized by its majestic green peaks and valleys, such as the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains along with the beauty of the rolling hills seen in Ela, adorned with numerous rivers and lakes. This natural beauty is a magnet for all things great and a few real challenges such as threats from development pressures, deforestation, and climate change. Sustainable design practices can clearly mitigate these negative impacts by encouraging developments that harmonize with the natural landscape while preserving our clean-living environment that we all cherish simultaneously.

Site-Sensitive Design

One of the first steps in sustainable design is site-sensitive planning, which involves assessing the natural features of a site before construction begins. This process is critical here, where steep slopes, waterways, and fragile ecosystems must be considered and respected. By learning and professionally discovering the natural contours and materials of the land, architects and builders can create structures that blend seamlessly into their surroundings while minimizing soil erosion and protecting local wildlife habitats. We all want that stunning view and create “windows” to capitalize on it, but considering how it impacts our neighbors, our mountain tops, should be the first consideration when planning our homes.

Green Building Practices

During the past decade, several commercial and residential developers and builders have adopted green building practices. For instance, the use of reclaimed wood and metals, use of local stone, and other long lasting sustainable materials reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation and extraction. Other design methods often include passive solar elements, maximizing natural light and reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling systems. This not only lowers energy bills for homeowners but also contributes to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions as well as light pollution. The use of these sustainable practices can reach beyond individual buildings; it can encompass entire neighborhoods and communities. This encouragement of residents to incorporate these elements in the planning stages can be extremely beneficial to future generations who want to call this beautiful area “home.”

Transportation Options

Another critical aspect of sustainability is transportation and the carbon footprint it creates. Although we all know that it takes vehicles to go to most supply stores there is an uptick in the interest of exploring alternative transportation options, such as bike paths, public transit, and pedestrian-friendly downtown communities. Towns like Sylva and Waynesville have thriving multi-use communities and bike paths and trails can be seen on many of our most scenic roads.

Local Governments & Education

Local governments, colleges and high schools can play a vital role in promoting sustainable design. We can take notes from other communities that have implemented a comprehensive sustainability plan aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energy sources. Our natural ecosystem here is very delicate and needs to be preserved. We have clean water, clean air and can grow more types of vegetables than in most places in the world.

Education on all levels of learning, university level, high school level, and even younger can and should emphasize sustainability in their curricula offerings that will ultimately produce a new empowered generation of designers, builders, and planners ready to tackle the challenges of the future.

Agricultural Sustainability

Agriculture and cottage industries are the cornerstone of WNC’s economy and culture. Sustainable agricultural practices are being encouraged and implemented to ensure the health of the land while providing fresh produce to local communities. Free services like MindSpring and Eco-Foresters are great resources for education and input as to the techniques that one can learn about permaculture, agroforestry, and organic farming. The local growers and homesteaders can be instrumental in creating an environment that supports biodiversity and with an added benefit cut down on the carbon footprint associated with food transport. The community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs available can connect consumers directly with these local farmers, promoting a sustainable food system that benefits both the local family farms as well as residents and visitors to our area.

All that being Said….

Let’s do this! Practical and sustainable design in these Great Smoky Mountains can be a reality. The use and blending of innovative practices, community engagement and never forgetting to respect the surrounding environment can benefit us all as well as our children. Making green building, site-sensitive design, and sustainable practices in conjunction with education on all levels a priority in our communities will pave the way toward a more enjoyable healthy future. This organic proactive approach to building and development not only enhances the beauty and functionality of the environment but also strengthens the connection between the people living on the land we all cherish. The path toward sustainability is an ongoing long-haul journey and should remain the focus and passion for it to be successful generation to generation. Just think how wonderful our world could be with everyone pulling for the greater good at preserving our lifestyle, our professions and providing a clean long-lasting living environment that seems barely touched by over development, toxic chemicals and polluted air and water. We can do this and simply should.

The Future of Living: Can Sustainable Homes Achieve Net-Zero Energy Goals?

Who wouldn’t enjoy saving money instead of spending hundreds of dollars every month to fuel their home? According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), it’s entirely possible to reduce your home energy costs to net-zero, or even to a net gain.

A net-zero energy home (ZEH) looks like any other home, except they’re built to be “airtight, well insulated, and energy efficient” to produce as much renewable energy as they consume. This is far beyond putting solar panels on your home, although that’s a great start. A zero-energy home is built with superior materials that incorporate solar construction, smart technologies, and energy-efficient operating systems, appliances and accessories. These carbon-free homes are certified to

be “ultra-comfortable, healthy, quiet, sustainable homes that are affordable to live in.”

Sustainability isn’t cheap, which is a drawback for many homebuyers and homeowners. Currently, building a net-zero energy home costs about five to 10% more than other homes built to code of similar size. But the combination of cost-effective design and construction energy-saving features with solar collectors means the home will cost far less to own than its 10% premium. The DOE maintains that you’ll have positive cash flow from the first month you own the home. The prices of many energy-saving features, including solar collectors, are falling, which is also improving affordability. Read More.

STRAW BALES & CHICKEN TALES

Digging

into the Joys of Homestead

Living

Ready to get your hands a little dirty this season—in the best way possible? From planting in straw bales to raising backyard chickens, sustainable living is taking root in a big way! Whether you’re dreaming of fresh herbs outside your kitchen door or gathering eggs from your own flock, these down-to-earth trends are reshaping how we garden, live, and even search for homes. Let’s dig into two techniques I’m implementing at my own homestead!

Straw Bale Gardening

Planting season is in full swing, and we’re all about straw bales! Straw bale gardening offers a sustainable, low-impact way to grow your favorite vegetables and herbs— no digging required. As the straw slowly

decomposes, it transforms into a rich, compost-like growing medium that naturally nourishes your plants. This method cuts down on weeding, eliminates the need for tilling, and works beautifully in areas with poor soil or limited space. When the season wraps up, the used bales can be composted or added to garden beds, continuing the cycle of healthy, regenerative gardening. Got questions? Reach out – I love to talk dirt and all things gardening!

Chicken Coops Are Going Viral—And They’re Changing Home Searches!

Backyard chickens aren’t just a fun trend—they’re becoming a must-have for many homebuyers! More and more of my clients are basing their home search on whether they can have chickens. Fresh eggs, sustainable living, and the joy of raising a flock? Totally worth it!

Before you jump in, there are a few things to consider! Check out this great article “Chicken Coops Are Going Viral—Here’s What to Know Before Getting One” from Better Homes & Gardens with everything you need to know before getting started. Plus, check out my own feathered friends in the pic!
