How Much Will It Cost Phelan & Pinon Hills For The Hwy 138 Widening Project?
Chris Cummings, General Manager of the Sheep Creek Water Company explained that in order to accommodate the needs of the project it would cost about $420,000. Which included tying in an additional line to provide continuous water to the community while they disconnected the main water line to make the modifications needed, a 30 day project. “We could install another well for that cost.” said Chris. Luckily, because Sheep Creek Water obtained easements for their water line dating back to the early 1920s before there was a highway, Caltrans was obligated to pay the lions share of the cost, leaving Sheep Creek with a $11,400 bill.
Survey Markers give indication of what may come: Historical Mtn. Top Cafe has been in continuous operation since the 1940s. Over the years, there have been several battles fought over this junction beginning with the construction of the highway in the 1930s.
Plans are still moving forward with the Caltrans Highway 138 widening project. The project will widen and realign parts of Highway 138 from county line to Interstate 15 Freeway. Though the project will make the Highway safer to travel, it comes at an expense to water customers of the two water systems/customers of Phelan and Pinon Hills and is seriously impacting property owners along the Hwy 138 route.
fied by Caltrans that water lines need to be modified in order to accommodate Caltrans plans. These modifications will cost Sheep Creek Water and the CSD about $1.2 million.
Both Sheep Creek Water Company and the Phelan Pinon Hills Community Services District (CSD) were noti-
These costs, especially the water companies will directly impact the residents of Phelan and Pinon Hills.
Additionally, Southern California Edison has been required, as a result of right of way realignments, to relocate over 300 power poles at a cost of about $900,000, estimating the cost to move a pole at about $3000 per pole.
The CSD project will consist of extending 10 different waterlines and lowering the depth of some to meet the needs of the widening of the highway. “We’ve already spent $100,000 engineering the project and that’s before construction” said Don Bartz, General Manager. “Currently the projected cost of construction is about $560,000. Divided out, that’s about $100 per meter.” The CSD is looking at ways to reduce the cost of the project by looking into easements that may have been obtained when the county ran the water company. Unfortunately, accurate and complete records were not passed on to the CSD when they took over. Finally, there is the potential cost to three local businesses, Rick’s RoadSee “CALTRANS” • Page 20

Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Those Lost On September 11, 2001
Guest Speaker: David Williams, Asst. Sheriff
Understanding the significance of September 11, 2001 (9-11) in the national history, the local Veterans Memorial Committee will honor not only the military who died on 9-11, but the thousands of civilians and first responders as well. The annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Wrightwood Veterans Memorial is set for Monday, May 26th at the hallowed grounds that local Veterans, along with support from San Bernardino County, dedicated in 2009 in the Village Center. the Wrightwood Veterans Committee decided that the loss of life, and world changing events, resulting from the terrorist attack on 9-11, September 11, 2001, should be commemorated. Military members, civilians, and valiant ‘first responders,” those fire and police personnel who risked and gave their lives to rescue personnel in New York City and Washington, D.C., are to be honored by the local community. Close to 3000 died as a direct result of the terrorist attacks that September morning, leading to what would be a continuing Global War on Terror. The 11am event will feature two speakers who will speak to the subject of service, commitment at whatever cost. Easter time is always fun around the Tri-Community. This year the Easter Bunny got started early. On Saturday, in Phelan, the Phelan Chamber of Commerce put on their annual egg hunt, co-sponsored by the Phelan Pinon Hills Community Services District, and Desert Mountain Veterinary.
Several hundred kids showed up ready to collect as many eggs as they could. They were also able to enjoy a bounce house, face painting and carnival games hosted by Anderson’s True Value. There were also gift basket giveaways donated by Shear Realty, J.Tidwell and Associates Real Estate, and Desert Mountain Veterinary. Join the Snowline Wellness Team for healthy snacks, important conversations, and meaningful planning. Ensuring endless possibilities for all students through high levels of learning requires a comprehensive approach to realize this purpose. Promoting and supporting wellness for students and the greater Tri-Community is an effort that is becoming a growing priority for the Snowline District and its expanding list of local partners. Research shows that when the residents of a community work together to create healthier environments for all, children become the greatest beneficiaries, but all groups win. Increased wellness and a culture of health are results that come from such work that will last generations. What is the Snowline District doing to help create healthier environments for students and the Tri-Community?
They have been promoting wellness in their schools for students and staff members while planning with community partners to extend the work to all reaches of the district boundaries. Snowline currently has partnerships with local entities like the Phelan Pinon Hills Community Services District (PPHCSD) for the annual Senior Health Fair. Developing a healthy community benefits students and all other individuals. The act of working together to achieve outcomes greater than ever before is one legacy the District feel is worth pursuing. Join the effort to create increased wellness through the Healthy Snowline Communities initiative. Better health for children, adults, and our entire community.

Kevin, a concrete mix truck company owner, got donations of concrete and equipment and was there to assist Herb Anderson as he designed and constructed the base for the Veterans tribute that proudly reminds Villagers of the sacrifice of our military. In the last few years, Kevin and Jill have done yeoman’s duty to involve the schools in the TriCommunity area, from writing contests, art contests, and music programs.
Thank you for your dedication & Hard Work: Kevin & Jill Ketzel were instrumental in developing & building the Wrightwood Veteran Memorial. They have given time, sweat and unwavering commitment to the community. For this the County Supervisors recognized the Ketzels with an Official Resolution.
Local Couple Honored For Dedicated Work On Tri-Community’s Wrightwood Veterans Memorial When a small group came together in 2007, challenged with the idea of building a Veterans Memor ial in Wr ightwood, a Wrightwood couple heard about the project from their good friend Kay Lavish and offered to help. To help was and is the understatement of the year, possibly the decade, as Jill and Kevin Ketzel, not only involved themselves in the raising of the more than $25,000 it took to commission, carve and install the monument that graces the Wrightwood Vet-
erans Memorial, but Kevin was constantly on call in every aspect of the “build-out.” Jill, a classroom teacher in the Victor Unified School District, moved from fundraising to being an integral part of the dedication ceremony in 2009. Her desire to bring young people into the commemoration ceremonies held twice a year at the Veterans Memorial in the Village Center, led to her serving as the coordinator of the annual “pre-ceremony” that involves our youth.
With the constant pressure by a California government that has lost its entrepreneurial spirit, Kevin has had to move his concrete mix business east to Colorado and the high plains states. As Jill finishes up the school year and the couple prepare to assist one more time at the annual Memorial Day ceremony May 26th, then it will be off for “greener pastures” for the Ketzels… but with a promise that they will tr y to get back down for our annual Tri-Community ceremonies. After receiving their resolution, Kevin said he never would have believed there was so much warmth and spirit in Wrightwood. He is proud to have lived here and he and his wife are sad to leave.
ChemoWize Concert at the Village Grind Kelly Zirbes & Perry Robertson of Kelly's Lot will be performing on Saturday, May 10th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at The Village Grind in Wrightwood. The blues/rock duo have released 8 CDs, including a 'Live in Brussels' CD and played countless festivals and events. During their 17 years together this Southern California band has toured nationally and internationally and has been featured on many media outlets including radio, television, films and podcasts. In 2013 they successfully toured the UK and France and are now planning more USA and European shows for 2014. The full tilt electric version of Kelly's Lot is now recording a new CD with a horn section and keys. Kelly and Perry write great songs with heart and an inspiring spirit. The energy they make is contagious and a recipe for fun. - See more at: http://www. kellyslot.com. What Is A Certified Farmers Market? BY ROWENA MCDERMOTT
Rain and snow in April ? This was no April’s fools joke. The month started off with a cold Gulf of Alaska storm sweeping down the Pacific Northwest coastline and moving across Southern California. This system arrived on April 1st and brought with it light rain and some much needed snow in the local mountains. Although the storm lost most of it’s energy prior to reaching the Tri-Community it manage to drop .02 of an inch of rain in Phelan. After the small storm passed, temperatures plummeted in Phelan with daytime highs only reaching 57 degrees on the 1st. and 54 degrees on the 2nd. Overnight low temperatures were recorded below the freezing mark including a chilly 30 degrees logged on the 3rd. Rollercoaster type weather was on the agenda for the remainder of the month. As of April 24th the highest temperature recorded occurred on the 9th at a Summer like 87 degrees. When temperatures fluctuate extremely this is a prime environment for the development of dust devils. Also referred to as whirlwinds or dancing devils, here in the High Desert they can reach several hundred feet high and generate winds exceeding 45 miles per hour. They are notorious for causing damage and making a mess in your yard in just a few seconds. You may have seen footage on local NEWS stations of fire devils. These occur during large wildfires when hot air rises rapidly and forms a swirling mass of flames. These are extremely dangerous because the can pick up hot cinders and spread them to unburned areas causing the wildfire to spread. Could there be dust devils on Mars? Yes indeed, in fact, back in the 1970’s the Viking orbiters photographed the first dust devils on the surface of Mars. Then in 1997 the Mars Pathfinder detected and photographed some as well. The latest and greatest proof is actual video taken in 2005 recorded by the Mars rover called “ Spirit “, during this video you can see a large dust devil that actually leaves a path on the surface of Mars. --Weather Summary & Phelan Data provided by National Weather Service Spotter Tom Fracasso WEATHER UPDATE: A cold Spring storm originating from the Gulf of Alaska produced rain in the valley and snow in the mountains on April 25th. Phelan received .13 of an inch of precipitation.
Many of you have been asking what is a “Certified Farmers Market”? A certified farmers market is a market regulated by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). Many farmers will only participate in a certified farmers market because of the protection that the agency provides. If a farmer wishes to participate in a certified farmers market he must become a certified producer. He begins by applying with the CDFA and requesting an inspection. He provides the CDFA with a list of all produce or plants he plans on bringing to market and the amounts to be grown and in addition the number of bushels, bags or bunches he
plans on selling at market. Once the inspector visits the farm and confirms that the list is indeed being grown on the farm the certificate is issued. Once the farmers start attending market they are required to provide the manager with a “load list” each market stating what they sold. This is kept on file for CDFA review. If a complaint is filed or the inspector visits the market and finds items being sold not on the certificate they will then request the log sheets and do a complete review. This entire process is to protect the other farmers at market and the consumer. The CDFAs duty is to ensure that you are receiving local farm fresh produce and the other farms are protected from “Buyers and Sellers” claiming that the produce they are selling is from their farm. A farmers market in addition has to apply to become a Certified Farmers Market and pays fees to support the CDFA in their efforts and complies with all rules and regulations
set forth by the CDFA. The CDFA as stated above only confirms that the produce was grown locally on the farm location stated on the certificate. They do not govern whether or not pesticides or herbicides have been used on the farm. They certify conventional farms (uses pesticides and herbicides) and farms using organic methods are certified as organic. They do go as far as enforcing the organic certification laws in that unless you have paid the fees to become certified organic you are not allowed to use the word “organic”. An uncertified farm may state how they raise the crops with or without herbicides, pesticides or with compost only, etc., but they may not say they are “organic” unless certified according to law. I hope this clarifies a few questions, but if you have any questions feel free to ask me at the Phelan Certified Farmers Market on Mondays at Phelan Community Park from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. or email me at moonstruckfarms2@verizon.net.

BY STACY FLEEUP Summer travel is almost upon us. With the weather warming and kids starting the end-of-school countdown, spend a little time to think about the hard work your vehicle will soon be performing. Travel through the desert can be tenuous. Nothing like a breakdown on a treeless stretch of road in 100+ degree weather with a dying cell phone! A 100 mile tow bill is a sure way to spoil the day. A quick visit to your neighborhood mechanic for a summer trip check is a great way to avoid some bad situations. To ‘summerize’
Your car battery performs an important job. Anyone who has turned the ignition key only to hear a dreaded ‘click’ knows they waited a little too long to have their battery checked. A voltage check and load test give a good indication of your b a t t e r y ’s strength. If your vehicle battery is serviceable (as opposed to a no-maintenance battery), ask your mechanic to perform a specific gravity test; the strength of the chemicals inside your battery is a good indicator of remaining battery life. Your mechanic
Tire condition is another area to pay special attention to. Monthly and before any major trip, all tires should be aired to specification; if you don’t know where to find this information be sure to ask your mechanic. Don’t forget to have the spare tire checked, too; changing a flat on the roadside only to find you’ve been hauling around a deflated spare is aggravating!
This is the time for your mechanic to advise you on the general condition of your tires – remaining life, uneven wear, etc. Drive belt condition is also important. Back in the day a cracked belt was the visual indicator that your vehicle was ready for belt replacement. That is no longer a reliable method as many belts available today wear but do not crack. Ask your mechanic about the remaining life and condition of your belts. See “MECHANIC” • Page 20

The Sportsmen’s Corner Spring is here and fishing from our local High Desert lakes all the way North to the Eastern High Sierras is in full swing. Many of the lakes in Southern California are phasing out the trout stockings and are beginning weekly catfish plants. During this edition of The Sportsman's Corner I will try my best to inform you on the best ways to catch your target fish. The big news is the highly anticipated High Sierra trout opener, this event brings thousands of anglers from around the country and all over the world. Beginning on April 26th these fishermen and women will begin their assault on areas such as Mammoth Lakes, The June Lake Loop, Lake Crowley and Owens River just to name a few. If you plan to fish the Mammoth and June Lake Loop areas, water depths are best during the Spring snow melts, The better lakes to fish are the deeper ones such as Mammoth’s Lake George, and Gull Lake in the June Lake Loop. Historically the best way to catch trout in these areas it to troll leadcore line at various depths or "Colors " to find the larger fish. Thomas Buoyants in the trout colored pattern always seem to be the best
producer. Another good technique to use from a boat is fishing a bottom bait and let the boat drift with the wind or breeze, this keeps your bait moving and covers a lot of area. For those who enjoy bank fishing from shore, top baits include powerbait colors and flavors such as salmon peach, garlic scent, rainbow with glitter and the new hot bait orange glow with glitter. Inflated nightcrawlers is also a good bait because sometimes you can trick an older larger trout to bite. When using any of the floating baits remember to use an extra long leader such as two or three feet to ensure your bait floats above the weeds growing in the lake bottom. Flows on the Upper Owens River are up but the water is a bit off color, in spite of this there are still plenty of migratory rainbow trout to be caught, Nightcrawlers fished with a clear bobber is a good bet when fishing anywhere on the Owens River. Fly fishing works well in the more open spots along the river. If your fly fishing try to use a fly that matches the most recent hatch of bugs, this will help trick the pickier fish to bite. The spawning run from Lake Crowley is just about over, but the lake will continue to receive thousands of

Try to keep changing the colors and retrieval speeds to find out what the fish want for that day and time. Due to the lack of trees around the lake it's also a great lake to fly fish in as well. How Effective Is Rattle Snake Vaccine For Your Pets BY DR. BRUCE BURCH, DVM Rattlesnake vaccine is a relative newcomer on the inoculation scene, having arrived in about the last 10 years. When it first appeared I was very reluctant to jump on the bandwagon on this one because the only research literature available about this product is put out by the company who makes it. To the best of my knowledge there is no independent research published. My concerns were two fold: First is it safe? That is, how likely is it to cause reactions of any kind, from mild nausea to fever to severe and possibly life threatening anaphylactic events? Second, does it work? Just because a product is safe doesn't necessarily mean it is worth your money, From what I heard from other veterinarians who had been using the vaccine from the outset, and now in my own experience, there have been few reactions of any kind and absolutely no serious ones that I know of. That is hard to say about even the common
rabies and parvo virus vaccines. Either of these can produce mild fever, body aches and pains, or tenderness at the inoculation site. But what about the second issue, effectiveness? Well that's a harder issue to address. Even the manufacturer notes that it is not a guarantee that your pet will have no problem if it does become evenomated by a rattlesnake. They point out that quick evaluation and treatment by a veterinarian is essential for a pet exposed to rattle snake venom. But they also point out that having had the series and appropriate boosters is the equivalent of having had one doe of antivenin. And anti-venin, a heart stoppingly expensive medication, is-hands down- the best treatment for known exposure to rattlesnake venom. The manufacturer now recommends an initial series of two vaccines about 2 - 3 weeks apart followed by a booster vaccine once every 6 months. There is, however, something those of us who live in this area need to realize: We have 3 kinds

of rattlesnakes around here-some say 4. There is the Mojave Grgen, the Southern Pacific and to some extent the sidewinder. There is also a possibility that in area co-inhabited by both types, the Southern Pacific and the Mojave inter breed and produce a hybrid snake. I you live north of Hwy 18 out into the desert, there is only the Mojave. South of Hwy 138 up into the mountains, there is only the Southern Pacific. Between the 2 highways is the shared territory. And what’s important about this is that is the fact that the vaccine, according to Red Rock Biologics, the manufacturer, the vaccine is absolutely ineffective against the venom of the Mojave Green. For this reason it is most useful for those who live on the mountain side of Hwy 18 and on up into Wrightwood. Between the 2 highways it is a roll of the dice. I live out in the desert and armed with this information I no longer use the vaccine for my dogs. At our animal hospital we have seen no cases of snakebites this year, nor last year. In 2012 we saw 4 starting as early as February. Two of those were quite bad (and expensive to treat) with one almost needing a blood transfu-

The meeting is open to the public and everyone is welcome. This narrated slide program follows the early development of the Arrowhead Springs Hotel, and the electric trolley system that was built to service the world-renowned resort. Freight service on the Arrowhead Line transported the famous Arrowhead Spring Water in specially designed tank cars into San Bernardino, where they were put onto the mainline and hauled to the Los Angeles bottling plant. Mark Landis is a native Californian who lives in the San Bernardino County community of Wrightwood with his wife. The “Worlds Smallest” Air Show Returns To Llano Every year on Memorial Day weekend, Brian Ranch hosts the largest event in their small town. It's the "World's Smallest" Air Show, this year on Saturday May 24 & Sunday May 25 from 8 am to 2 pm. It's hard to believe that this year will be the 20th air show. The "World's Smallest" Air Show showcases entry level, affordable aviation. Most of the participants fly out of Brian Ranch every weekend. If you've attended in the past, you know what to expect. There will be ultralights competing in beanbag drops. The model airplanes will perform as well as display the many types of radio controlled aircraft they fly. There will be sky divers. This year, we anticipate two groups of sky divers. “Just in Time” has performed at the air show for many years and will again
participate. Joining them will be the Tumbleweeds, a group of young local guys who are based at Brian Ranch. We will be offering flights at $40. Please bring cash if you intend to fly. In addition, we will have the Boy Scouts, the kids coloring contest, and other interesting things to do. There will be food and memorabilia and (we hope) fruit to pick. We are always looking for more exhibits, so let us know if you have anything to show off. This is a great event for the whole family. Bring the kids and the grandkids. Brian Ranch is on Largo Vista Rd, one mile north of Pearblossom Hwy. If you want more information, contact Felice Apodaca at (661) 261-3216 or felice@brianranch.com.
Dr. Burch further said, “It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve the fantastic pet owning clients of the Family Pet Clinic. I have been a vet for 31 years and the last 11 have been the best. I have met wonderful people and forged great relationships with them and some of the dearest and most beloved pets imaginable. I feel very sad cutting back on my contact time with all of them. ” The new proprietors, a husband and wife veterinary team, the Drs. Sandhu, have been veterinarians for over 20 years and residents of the
High Desert for 8 years. They have high school aged children and have always been active in school activities with them. They enjoy community involvement and look forward to participating in the Tri-Community as well as serving its pets and their owners. Mrs. Dr. Renu Sandhu has been actively involved with raising the children while keeping current in veterinary medicine by doing fill- in or “relief” work for other vets as well as attending continuing education programs. Mr. Dr. Navdeep Sandhu is active in the Kiwanis Club of Victorville. They enjoy forming strong bonds within their community and anticipate continuing to do so here in ours for the next decade or two. The transition in ownership should be completed within the next few weeks. IS CHECKYOUR LIGHTENGINE ON?

They Walked The Point BY JIM WILKINS “Since America began, conflict has not been a stranger. Farm boys donned the soldiers uniform and went off to someplace far away to fight the war to end all wars……leaving behind mothers and sweethearts to wait, hope and wonder. As World War II started for America with the attack on Pearl Harbor, the call to arms was swift and all encompassing. By the hundreds of thousands they streamed out of the heartland to learn the warriors skill. Very young men whose biggest worry had been whether they could borrow the family station wagon suddenly found themselves thrust into the responsibility of being able to wreck incredible havoc with deadly force. Since then the litany of faraway names & places march on: Korea…. Lebanon…Viet Nam…Panama….the Gulf War...Afghanistan. Each one seemed important enough at the time and with few exceptions, took a hor-
rible toll on America’s most important resource. There is something that every soldier learns when preparing to face the enemy…to kill or be killed….for the first time. These are the three absolute rules in war: Rule number 1: Good men die young Rule number 2: You can’t change rule number 1 Rule number 3: Somebody has to walk point. When a fighting unit moves out to face the enemy, someone has to walk the point, be the front man, find the enemy, take the first shot and as a consequence, be the first to be shot at. The very concept screams, “No!!” to every survival instinct within us; it defies any sense of logic or reason, it makes young men old and old men tremble….but it is always done, for it must be done.

To “walk the point” means to step into danger for the good of the whole, to provide them protection, to limit the body count and to make the path safe for those to follow. The point man’s job is to save lives and as a consequence, risk his own. President Theodore Roosevelt said that the credit belongs to the man in the arena, to the one whose face is marred with sweat, and dust, and blood, and a few of us know there are some things you cannot do without stepping into that arena. You cannot have a war without casualties….you can’t have pilots without crashes or fight fires without meeting the occasional widow maker. So, on the eve of Memorial Day, we should honor these men & women for what they did, never knowing what the outcome might be. We should honor them because they did what few in our society dare to do….they stepped into the arena for those timid souls among us who trust that they will and that others will follow to do the same. Honor them not only for what they faced or for the sacrifice they gave but honor them for what they did everyday; day after day. Many of you reading this have firsthand knowledge of what we are talking about and should be very proud of your service….for the debt is owed to you, too. When you watch our flag being proudly displayed this Memorial Day, remember in the solitude of your prayer time to give thanks that there are still others willing to step into danger for the greater good of the whole…. to make the path safe; and get down on your knees to thank God that they took their turn “walking the point.”

Convicted serial rapist Christopher Hubbart, also known as the “Pillowcase Rapist”, admitted to assaulting dozens of women in the 1970s and '80s has been committed, since 1996, to Coalinga State Hospital because of his violent sexual tendencies. Within a matter of weeks he could reside in Lake Los Angeles, less than 25 miles from the Tri-Community. A landlord has agreed to rent a single-family residence near the 20000 block of East Avenue R to house Hubbart. This is the second location found by state authorities for Hubbart to live. A previoius landlord in Lake Los Angeles who had initially agreed to house Hubbart backed out last year due to public pressure. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Gilbert Brown has tentatively approved the location and set a hearing date to review public comments for May 21, 2014. Under a state law allowing authorities to commit sexually violent predators to state hospitals based on their likelihood of reoffending, Hubbart has been residing in Coalinga State Hospital located in Fresno County. It is a maximum security civil-commitment facility built to ensure that sexually violent predators stay out of the community. Once released, Hubbart will have round-the-clock security monitoring for at least 30 days, will be required to wear an ankle bracelet monitor, and will be subject to regular drug and alcohol testing and lie detector tests.
in unincorporated LA County along the border of San Bernardino County and being a County Area, there is no law enforcement dedicated this area. Response time can be anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours depending on the availability and location of the nearest Deputy Sheriff. The County Sheriff does not have the funding to provide the additional patrols that would be necessary to protect the citizens of this community. Many of their homes are so far apart that a neighbor could scream and no one would never even hear them. Ninetyfour percent of area residents commute nearly 45 minutes to work. This leaves many mothers home alone for extended periods of time. Many don’t have vehicles leaving them to walk with their children to school and back home alone. The Ladies of Lake LA have been campaigning to gather letters of opposition and petition signatures to present to Judge Brown. Their protests have generated many news reports from local to national, both in print and television. Find out more about the Ladies of Lake LA, visit their facebook page at www.facebook.com/ nopillowcaserapeist.com Beginning in 1969, Christopher Hubbart, while in high school, reached out and touched a woman’s breast as she walked by him. Summer Crops Are Coming! BY ROWENA MCDERMOTT Soon we will be enjoying our summer crops, and one of my favorite summer crops are green beans. Many of you have complained of the leaves yellowing and having dark green veins in your green bean plants. This is most likely due to our alkaline soil. A quick inorganic fix is to apply chelated iron to the soil, but for those wishing for an organic remedy you will need to amend with bone and blood meal, and definitely dig in additional organic matter (i.e. leaves), mulch with additional compost and amend the area well with compost next year. The alkaline soil (ph above 7.5) locks up the iron in the soil making it unavailable to the plants. Blood meal will acidify the soil bringing the soil ph down hopefully in the perfect veggie growing range of 6 to 7. There are ph monitoring kits and probes at your local hardware stores or JNJ Hydroponics in Phelan for you to help determine
the ph of your soil. If you did not add plenty of compost or other amendments to your soil it is most likely in the alkaline range. The soil has to be amended on a regular basis here to prevent the soil from reaching the alkaline range again and ruining those luscious green beans. At Moonstruck we are flower shopping. We have rows of asparagus that will lie dormant for a large part of the year, and we need to make good use of those rows. We are currently planting nasturtiums over one row that will act as a living mulch and provide the spicy flowers we love in our Moonstruck salad mix, and for the other we are researching carnations and lisianthus. The lisianthus are a beautiful rose like flower, but well know for lasting up to three weeks as a cut flower. Brier Rose brought me a sample at market, and it was at market with no water until 7:30 pm at night and then put in water and all but one bud perked

Serrano Future Farmers of America Attend State Conference In Fresno
And Smile...Really, this is how your going to play it: Serrano FFA Instructor Mrs. Huss and several Serrano FFA students attend the State FFA Conference in Fresno. Besides having the time of their lives, they learned about leadership and teamwork, voted on important issues and heard inspirational speeches.
BY DAKOTA LOW - SERRANO FFA REPORTER From April 11-April 15, thirteen Serrano FFA students and three advisers were extremely busy. How exactly were they busy? Well, they were all busy attending the 86th annual California State FFA Leadership Conference in Fresno, California. State conference, the second largest and most attended leadership conference besides the National FFA Convention, was a great learning and team bonding experience for all those who at-
C
tended. It almost seems impossible to do all that we did in only four days, but somehow we did. To start the trip off on a good start, our chapter took a day trip to Yosemite the day before the conference started. It may seem like a huge waste of time, but if you get a group of kids and drag them up into the mountains it may do some good for them. We all took a short half mile hike to Yosemite Falls and took a picture in the mist of the falls. Then from there we continued into the main
shopping and tourism area in the park. There we were allowed to split into smaller groups and explore the area. Over all, the trip was a great experience to get to learn more about the people we would be spending the next three days with and most-likely the rest of our High School time.

The first night of the conference we all enjoyed a rather amusing kick-off to the conference from our 2013-2014 State FFA Officer team. State officers from Nevada, Washington, New Mexico, and even one from Virginia where also in attendance. Later in an awards ceremony, STAR agriculture students were recognized. Though the most memorable part of the night were the two keynote speakers known as "The Passing Zone", they performed amazing acts of juggling. Over the course of their act, they juggled a bowling ball, performed numerous feats of two person juggling, and even shocked our past state sentinel with some very dangerous home made devices being juggled directly over his face. In July of 2013, a judge in Santa Clara County, once again, ordered Hubbart released from Coalings where he would be under the supervision of the Forensic Conditional Release Program. Under this program, administered by the California Department of State Hospitals, Hubbart would receive free housing, continued psychological assessment, group and individual therapy and regular home visits. He will be required to wear GPS monitoring, subjected to random drug testing, regular polygraph examinations and house searches. He will also have a security guard posted at his residence. Calero came out to look personally at the Mtn. Top situation and is going to study the materials that he as received from concerned community members about the project. There have been no other public notices to discuss the impact that this project would have on the Tri-Community. As far as the final version of the proposed project, it has never been posted on the Caltrans website. The 2010 draft remains, and Caltrans has stated that in order to obtain a copy, one would have to request it through the Freedom of Information Act.

closed with his hit single "WhatEver She's Got". The last day of the conference, as all 5,002 members and guests sat waiting for results of the changes to the California State FFA constitution and the announcement of the new 20142015 California FFA officer team. As every year prior, the famous debate of whether or not California should change its official dress to have females were natural nylons or switch to off black, like the rest of the nation. Also as every year prior, this amendment failed to change. Lastly, we heard the retiring addresses of our past State Vice President and State President then watched as our new officer team was implemented into their new positions. As a grand finale, FFA style, Blue and Gold confetti was burst out into the crowd in piles. After that, Fresno was free at last to enjoy an almost entire year free from blue jackets flooding their streets.
