10 yearS iN The MakiNg: The Wrightwood Village Trail is finally a reality. Residents and guests will be using this trail for years to come.

October 8, 2011 marked the dedication of the Wrightwood Village Trail. Initially intended for children to be able to walk to and from school without having to walk near the highway. And now, it is being enjoyed by residents of all ages and even their dogs walking to town for shopping, going to the Post Office or the Library or getting their daily exercise. The trail stretches 1.25 miles from Wrightwood Elementary School to the west to just past Sheep Creek Road (in Wrightwood) to the east. Close to 100 community members gathered at Wrightwood Elementary School where John Lenau, Chairman of the Wrightwood Village Trail Committee shared the events leading up to the day’s ceremony. District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt was in attendance as was Ken Anderson, representing Senator Sharon Runner. Members of Caltrans were also

present. Speeches were made and the Boy Scouts led the enthusiastic group on the inaugural hike down the trail. Children were given California Poppy seeds, courtesy of Golden State Water, to spread along the sides of the trail. The Timberline Lions Club, provided snacks and beverages for everyone, as well. Tenyears ago Leneau had the idea to blaze a trail through the village. A committee was formed and the work began. The committee consisted of Ron and Sue Parody, Lynn and Marcus Haile, Ernie Mogg, Chuck and Cathy Carroll, Kim Floyd and John Lenau. They worked hard for over four years but to no avail. There were just too many challenges and no money. Then, in 2009, with the widening Hwy 2 project, Caltrans had to cut down trees along Hwy 2. That mitigation brought the monies needed for the trail. And finally the trail began its path to beautifying Wrightwood.

Many residents have asked how they can help support the veterans’ dinner? “We can really use help in simple donations of $5 to $10 dollars from the public. The dinner costs about $5 dollars per person to put on. We are expecting over 1000 people this year,” Mr. Anton says, and “It is a wonderful event and the best history lesson the kids will get!“ The free dinner to all American veterans and their one guest is made possible through donations and the kids themselves! Michael Palecki Retires...Sort Of? By Alex Brandon PHOTO: Don Fish Jr. - NewsPlus

At the October 19th meeting of the Phelan Pinon Hills Community Services District, under the agenda heading of presentations, there was an uncommon occasion for an item. The Board of Directors presented Michael Palecki with a resolution upon his retirement.

MiChael PaleCki reTireS FroM CSd: Many of you may not have known that Michael spent 10 years taking care of the Pinon Hills Community Center.

Michael has, for over a decade, been the gentleman who took care of

ago. He’ll always have the standing of friend with me. Congratulations Michael.

Mr. Palecki is also, a reporter for the Mountaineer Progress, a local news publication. And, while some may think it a bit unusual to give another paper’s contributor recognition; I believe it is recognition well deserved. The public praise that was given at the CSD meeting was for being a contributor to his community. Now, he is not disappearing. Michael will continue his writing and presence in our area. He is an intelligent, informed and involved resident. Perhaps one of the best testaments was the Pinon Hills Chamber awarding him the status of Honorary Mayor a few years

Pinon Hills Seniors Are At It Again!

EDITORS NOTE: The rest of us at NewsPlus would also like to thank Michael for his years of dedicated community service.

You may remember last year, the Pinon Hills Seniors stripped down the Street Light Christmas decorations to bare wire and redecorated them. Well, it’s that time of year again, on Tuesday, December 15 the Seniors are pulling the decorations out of storage and sprucing them up for another holiday season. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Be at the Pinon Hills Senior Center on Mountain Rd. in Pinon Hills at 10:00am to help.

Live Local, Think Local, Buy Local Why Local? Why should you think local? By empowering your local economy, every dollar you spend with a local, independent business can generates two to four times more income, wealth and jobs for our community than a dollar spend elsewhere. Help keep the Tri-Community... The Tri-Community. Local, independent businesseswhere you shop, eat, and have fun, make our community special, and reflect The TriC o m m u n i t y ’s character and authenticity. Why not shop local.

Move your money. Move your checking, savings, and loan accounts to a local bank or credit union, where they take fewer financial risks, and your deposits make more capital available for local businesses and residents. Give Local. Localize you donation strategy. The Tri-Community has many effective non-profits, many of which are working on issues you care deeply about, right here at home.

Your Dollars Make A Difference. So Even If You Can’t Always Buy Local... Think Local First!

Care for your community. Local owners care about our town, just like you! They’re more connected with and accountable to our community, have lighter impact on our local environment, and strongly support local nonprofits and schools. How can you think local? Shop at local food stores. Seek out regionally grown food. The Tri-Community has great locally owned farmers’ markets. Support local farms by joining a community supported agriculture program (CSA).

What else can you do? Spread the word. Talk with others about what “local” means, and why it matters. Found a great local business? Tell you friends and neighbors, post it on Facebook, Twitter, a local forum or even write a review on Yelp. Talk with local businesses. A strong local economy is about relationships. Start a conversation with local businesses about what you like, what you don’t, and what would make you spend more of your money with them.

Christmas Boutique

Educate yourself about what’s local. Not sure if a business is local and independent? Ask!

Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 26 from 10am-4pm. Several local crafters will be holding their annual Christmas Boutique! All items are handmade by local residents. There will be table runners, lap quilts, aprons, hand painted Christmas ornaments, silk scarves, cards, embroidered tea towels and much more!

What does “local” mean? Locally owned. The majority of the ownership of the business, the people who have the biggest stake in its success, live right in the area. They tend to be proactively involved in our community, and keep more of the profits circulating in our local economy. Publicly traded companies, even those that are headquartered here, are not locally owned.

This is a great time to finalize or begin your Christmas shopping in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere while enjoying a cup of cider or hot chocolate.

Independently Operated. The local owners have full autonomy to make decisions about their business, including sourcing, operations, distribution, marketing, and technology. They are empowered to adopt innovations that align with their personal, community, and environmental values.

The Boutique is located at 1632 Twin Lakes Drive, corner of Twin Lakes and Oak in Wrightwood. If you have questions, call Rita at (760) 249-5220.

Holiday Mailing Schedule

As close to home as possible. Local is relative. Often, you can find the product or service in your neighborhood or city. But if you’re looking for something very specific, the nearest might be in Oregon, and that’s as local as possible! A good start is to ask, “Is there a quality alternative closer to home?”

The first holiday mailing deadline for customers sending packages using US Postal Service Parcel Post to all APO/FPO/DPO addresses is November 12. Space Available Mail, regardless of the APO/FPO/ DPO address, must be mailed by November 26, 2011.

Seek local and be loyal. Check out quality local options for coffee shops, furniture, pharmacies, hardware, auto shops, entertainment, and more. Find your favorites and stay loyal to them.

Phelan began the 1950s with a number of thriving ranches. Joe Ball, a successful chicken farmer, owned Yucca Forest Ranch, a 230acre spread; Lawrence Riggins ran cattle on his nearby ranch; and Kay Morris, a recently divorced young mother with three youngsters bought the 30 acres adjoining the Yucca Forest Ranch and decided to become a rancher. When problems with her water well arose, she turned to her neighbor Lawrence

Riggins, who referred her to Joe Ball, who happened to be an expert on wells. Wells weren’t the only topics of interest to the two, who formed an instant friendship that led, a year later, to a courtship and marriage in Kingman, Arizona in 1951. Happy in her new life, Kay learned to be a country gal — raised chickens, butchered them, and packaged them for sale all over the area.

In 1959 Kay retired from the chicken business to spend more time with her grandchildren. She took them on trips and hiked every trail in these parts. She said she could walk the socks off any of the kids or grandkids and frequently did. Those hikes often ended with a stop at Manion’s Restaurant in Wrightwood for root beer floats. What was to be a long and happy association between Phelan and Kay Ball began in the 1950s and continued until her death in the late 1990s. She was active in every organization in Phelan, and her piano entertaining is legendary. Until a year before her death, she still played piano at the Food Court in the Mall of Victor Valley. She is also responsible for much of the beautification of Phelan, planting seasonal flowers at the waterfall. Kay Ball, the tiny dynamo, was a familiar figure in her coolie hat weeding and planting flowers every spring. She also served three terms as Honorary Mayor and led numerous parades. According to early Postmaster and Phelan historian Ruth McDaniels, Phelan Road west to Highway 138 was paved in about 1958, two years after Sheep Creek Road to Duncan was paved. It

In 1954 Al McDaniel built the service station with two gas pumps and also sold oil, so now Phelan had a real service station. Al and Ruth and her children continued to operate the store, the service station, post office, and branch of the San Bernardino County Library located in the store. The county delivered three boxes of new books every other month, making the library a local fixture for 18 years.

At Sheep Creek Water Company, originally begun by the Johnson family to irrigate their orchards, they were working hard to keep up with the growth of the area. The father, Alfred Johnson had died in 1940 and Henry Johnson was the main activist in the water company for many years. Mrs. McDaniel writes that “Everyone had a cistern or reservoir. We received water three times a month. If you had pressure water, you had to maintain your own pump, which we did. In 1958 the company put in new lines and we received our first meter and at last had real water pressure in the lines. It is a thing

“One reason for this change was because Lawrence and Helen Riggins had purchased the land across the road from the store and had subdivided it into business lots (on the northeast corner of Sheep Creek and Phelan Roads). This was property which consisted of Phelan Road to Sheep Creek to Yucca Terrace to Riggins Road. Lawrence put in all the water lines

In 1955, Chuck and Caroline Ison opened Phelan Service and Garage on Phelan and Monte Vista Roads. In June of that year, the McDaniels leased the store to Paul Sanborn, but when he had a chance to go into the oil business in Oro Grande, Ray and Camille Doyle took over the lease. The McDaniels still lived in back of the store and continued to operate the post office, library and service station. Henry and Phoebe Johnson was a viable community organization and was very active in the 1950s. Much of the community’s social life centered on Grange activities. A new San Bernardino County Forest Service Station was built

in 1955 for the three “fire boys” as they were affectionately called in those days, and their truck. They had been housed in a little two-room cabin from April until December of each year, beginning in 1948.

Also in 1955, the first church was started in Phelan. Al and Pauline Cox were instrumental in securing the use of the old school so it could be used on Sundays for a community church service. The first new classroom was built in 1951, and the well respected teacher from 1951-1959 was Miss R. Velma Hollyfield. By 1957 the school boasted

two classrooms where Miss Hollyfield taught first through third grade in one, and Mrs. Wanda McClelland taught fourth through sixth in the other. There had been a time in the late 1940s when

it appeared that Phelan might lose its school, when they were down to only six students. By the 1950s though, more families had moved to Phelan, boosting the student population.

My Nightmare My Nightmare-- Now I know it takes a long time and a lot of patience to finally get published, or so everyone including my literary agent keeps telling me. But, I keep having this reoccurring dream and last night it played out something like this:

face and then as I turned toward my wife Marge, she was shaking her head in total agreement before blurting, “Don, you’ve got to go bury your troubles so we can all get some sleep around here,” then slammed her face into her pillow in desperation.

I’m eighty years old and living in a rest home. I’m sitting up in my bed and the tables and floor surrounding me are stacked with unpublished manuscripts. There is a middle aged woman in a white uniform patiently feeding me what appears to be oatmeal with a spoon. After I finally gum down and swallow the last of the disgusting pabulum, I look pathetically up into her eyes before asking; “Have you heard from my agent?”

First thing in the morning, I was on my way to the hardware store to buy a shovel. I found what looked to be a pretty good one, and then noticed that the label on the blade clearly identified it as a “Digging Shovel”. I immediately approached the clerk and asked, “This shovel seems fine for digging, but do you have one marked for “Filling In?” The clerk’s pleasant demeanor quickly changed as he gave me the same look as my wife had earlier, before politely asking me to leave the store.

It’s at this time I woke up screaming much to the dismay of the rest of the family, not to mention my poor dog, Casey, who only a second before was sleeping peacefully on the floor next to my bed; but has now levitated to the top of my dresser with the hair on her back standing straight up. She had one of those “What the heck’s the matter with you?” looks on her

and count up one by one, all the good things in your life and then see what happens.” I took Lucky’s advice, went home and began counting. After I’d reached about a thousand, I fell asleep on the couch for nearly four hours and slept like a baby with no nightmares. Upon awakening; I stood up, stretched my arms while looking around the room with a big smile on my face. I was beginning to feel pretty lucky myself. If you have any questions or comments, e-mail me at dfish@ vvpfilms.com. I’d be happy to hear from you. From the twilight zone I call My World, goodbye.

#1 installed. The company installed a phone inside for the convenience of the store and the McDaniel family, and a pay phone outside! Ruth collected

Undaunted by this; I went to visit a one eyed, one legged friend of mine who goes by the name of Lucky and explained to him my dilemma. He took no time at all before offering a solution. “You’ve got to take your own advice,” he said. “Not long ago, you wrote an article about counting your blessings. You need to go home

the money from the phone booth and earned fifteen percent for her service. She did that for ten years and remembers one of the biggest thrills she ever had was when a new phone booth was delivered to her. “I could write a book on the experiences we encountered on delivery of the phone messages. My daughter, Barbara earned a little money sometimes, delivering them. Some of them we delivered all the way to the Summit Inn on I-15 and all over Phelan,” she said. In the 1950s, the control of the Sheep Creek Water Co. exerted by the Johnson family began to lessen with the swelling population, land speculation, and increasing agricultural demands. The focus of the company began to change from an irrigation system to a domestic water system. Concrete pipe went in to replace the open ditch from the reservoir — work performed by contractor Harold McAllister, which brought a new pressure system. At about this time, the Johnson orchards were let go, because Henry was no longer able to keep up all the work involved.

Season’s Almost Over For The Wrightwood Farmers Market

Kohlrabi, Rutabaga, Turnips & Beets! Well as I am sitting here typing I am listening to the wind build in intensity and watching the temperatures drop. For these nights, coming up soon, where the temperatures are going to get close to freezing remember most of your kales, collards and other hardy plants will be fine, but if you have more tender winter plants or new plants out you might want to bury them in straw or create a mini greenhouse with PVC and Agribon fabric or plastic. Just remember, nothing touching the plants or that is where they will freeze for sure. The plastic or fabric can have a layer of ice, and this is fine, it will actually create more insulation for the plants.

bage and Lacinato kale while working carefully around a few remaining tomato plants that are still loaded!! Most of this will do just fine with a layer of straw on top of them through the worst of weather. I threw some more seed into the herb garden to take advantage of the beautiful Fall temps and headed to the greenhouses to put in another tray of lettuce…. yes, finally lettuce, and I reseeded the failed beds of cutting lettuce for Moonstruck Salad Mix…I am sure they will be fine now. I don’t bother putting lettuce outside due to our short season, and I love the lushness the greenhouses add to the lettuce, so it is the best bet around here with our winds.

You have just a few more weeks As I put on my overalls the other left to enjoy the Wrightwood Market. They are closing for the season on day, Molly started to spin her usual 360s in delight, but then I was November 18th. Wrightwood Farmers’ Market held every Friday in the parking lot of the WW Community Center from 4-7pm will move inside the Community building starting November 4th. The last date to shop for fresh, local organic grown fruits and vegetables, fresh breads, humus, dipping sauces and more will be Friday, November 18, 2011. Free coffee, tea and hot chocolate are offered.

WhaT’S For luNCh Today?: Students from the Montessori School in Wrightwood are participating in the Community Garden coordinated and managed by Stephanie Carroll.

WW Community Garden is located at the corner of Acorn and Edna in Wrightwood. The name is just what it applies- community gardening on a piece of land. The garden has forty, 4’x10’ raised plots and can be rented for $10 a year and includes water. Each plot holder/member is responsible for volunteering a few hours during the season and taking care of their plot. Each month an informative workshop is held to help with planning a garden.

Coordinator and manager of this project is Stephanie Carroll. If you’d like more info about the Community Garden or renting a plot email Stephanie at wwcommunitygarden@ gmail.com

The newest member to gardening is the Montessori School in Wrightwood, pre-K thru 5th grade. Their plot is divided into 2’x 2’ sections and each child started with 5 packs of fast growing fall seeds. Some children have put a personal touch to their section by adding rock formations or little Professional Dog Grooming creatures. Once a week, in the morning, the children tend the garden. They water, thin out and 760-868-9961 pick the crops, then for lunch they enjoy a freshly picked salad. Veteran’s Day continues at 11:00am at the VFW Post in Phelan with the raising of the flag by Boy Scouts followed by the official retirement of the flag, also performed by the Boy Scouts. If you have never seen this ceremony before, it is well worth witnessing! Everyone will then adjourn inside for a brief ceremony, invocation and pot luck meal. It is important that we take time to remember and honor those that have served and are currently serving to provide our freedom. “Lest We Forget”

“MEASURE G” FroM Page 2

Measure G will establish a permanent limit on the amount of tax revenue appropriated to the PPHCSD. The current provisional limit of $1,2 million, which was set by LAFCO in March of 2008, with the provision that at the first PPHCSD district election, a permanent appropriations limit be set and approved through a vote by the people of the district. November 8, happens to be the first district election and Measure G was added to the ballot. The PPHCSD issued a resolution

setting the appropriations limit at $2.7 million and they need a majority vote to pass the resolution. It is important to understand that this appropriations limit will not, will not raise your property taxes. It will only increases the amount the district could receive from the total amount of property taxes collected. If a majority vote is not achieved, the district will not be authorized to set the permanent appropriations limit. Which could mean the Phelan and Pinon Hills areas may not get their fair share of property tax money returned to the area.

Is La Nina Back? The month of October provided some beautiful mild Fall weather. As of the 24th the highest temperature recorded was logged on the 14 th at 92 degrees , the lowest temperature recorded was a cool 37 degrees that occurred on the 7th. As for rainfall a Low Pressure System passed through the Southland on the 5th. This System dropped most of it’s rain “ Down below” leaving some portions of the High Desert high and dry. This weather station only recorded .06 inches of precipitation. The reason for this was the angle of the approaching storm, once the cold front moved over the San Gabriel Mountain spine the Mountains squeezed out most of the moisture giving Phelan just a few light showers.
