INTRODUCTION TO MATH ACT math is not exactly the same as the math you do in school. Yes, a lot of your old favorites will show up here (ratios, two-variable equations, the Pythagorean Theorem, and many more!) but the questions are a little bit different. In school, you learn content. They teach you something and then test you on it. The ACT is a reasoning test. That means it's less about specific rules and methods than about problem solving. For example, in school, they teach you algebra and then test you on how well you use algebra. On the ACT, they give you a problem and ask you to solve it any way you can. That could mean algebra or it could mean arithmetic or geometry. On any given problem, there's no one way that's "the right way" to do it. Almost every problem on the ACT can be done several different ways. Now, some ways are faster or safer than others, so our job is to show you the best way to do a given problem. Throughout the next few chapters, we'll be talking about two types of things: content and techniques. Content is the literal stuff you need to know (like the Pythagorean Theorem*). Techniques are methods for doing lots of different kinds of problems (like Plug In). Both are equally important. However, a lot of the content you' ll already be familiar with from your adventures in school, it's the techniques that will be new for you, so that's where we should concentrate.
