Kate Alsterlund Not many people that are born blessed to do something and realize at a young age you never want to stop doing this. This is the case for Agent Lynx, Montreal and Canada’s top B-girl. She has been recently awarded in 2015 the International ladies of Hip Hop battle of the year award. She has also won 16 awards, been blessed by Red Bull in 2006, been awarded a honorary lifetime achievement award by Hip Hop Festival Under Pressure. She now dances with her female B-Girl crew Legendary and owns her own dance company T.A.T - Trash and Tresoir. 4AM NEWS has now officially recognized Agent Lynx as one of “the best female breakers in the world”. We are very proud to say that and feature Lynx as a definite creative woman in da 514. Here’s her interview with 4AM NEWS: What inspired you to break dance? When I came to study at Concordia University I was into skateboarding and graffiti and I used to go out to loft parties, raves and after hours clubs. I saw b-boys getting down at these spots and the first time I saw them I immediately said to myself, “I want to do that”. I grabbed some friends who were doing it and tried to get them to teach me and then I went out trying to find classes but there were none. I even took Capoeira because it looked similar to Breaking but of course I soon found out it was it’s own art form. Eventually I linked up with some other girls, who like me wanted to learn, we formed a b-girl crew, (my first crew Elementale 5) and recruited a b-boy to teach us. What move took you the longest to do that you don’t expect to see a woman doing? I don’t have expectations about moves that ‘men’ or ‘women’ do and for that matter I don’t base my dance or my artistry on ‘moves’. That being said, every power move that I learned to do took me several years to learn and I’m still perfecting some of them to this day. I guess two of the most ‘impressive’ moves that I

do are windmill and headspin. When I was learning my windmills it was hard because it was a lot of trial and error, a lot of times I didn’t have a coach beside me telling me how to do every detail. I just had to do it over and over hundreds of times, get bruises or bang my head on the concrete a bunch of times and get a black eye and then learn that my technique was wrong and that I should probably learn a more efficient way. Is break dancing a equal art for between guys and girls are they’re as many B-boys as B-girls today? First off, none of us refer to what we do as ‘BreakDancing’. That is a term from the 80’s that we only use to let the general public know what we’re doing. Within our culture and our scene we refer to our dance as B-boying and B-girling or some people use ‘Breaking’ as a gender neutral term. B-girls are definitely in the minority, although Montreal is exceptional for having an incredible B-girl scene and history that I have been proud to be a part of. There is most definitely a lack of equality, (just like in our society at large and in the culture of Hip Hop) between men and women. B-boys enter a culture that is privileged to them and many are not aware of this. There is a lack of gender equality in many aspects. B-girls do not have the same economic opportunities that b-boys have although I have been

grateful for all the opportunities that I have had which have been largely due to my hard work over the last 18 years of being dedicated to this dance and thanks also the people who have believed in me, taught me and supported my efforts, (most of whom were b-boys). If not dancing what is the next creative talent that you love and are as talented at? I have a degree in English literature and Contemporary Dance. I’m an excellent writer. I dabble in aerosol art and when I’m not b-girling I’m into learning other styles of dance like: Hustle, Rocking, House, Hip Hop, African Dance and Ballet. I also practice and teach yoga and give massage and Reiki treatments. In my free time, (hahahaha) I choreograph and organize events. Where are Montreal b-girls at compared to the U.S., Europe or Asia? Montreal has an exceptional number of b-girls and this is due in part to the long and rich ‘her’story of b-girling in this city which I’m proud to have been a part of creating. For example sometimes I’ve been to practices where there are more b-girls than b-boys and I don’t think you’ll find this phenomenon anywhere else in the world. There are amazing and often unknown b-girls all over the world and I think Ca-

nadian b-girls and Montreal b-girls are on par with the some of the top b-girls in the world we are just kind of underground and ‘unknown’. I haven’t really had the chance to travel or battle in Europe but for example out of the 15 battles that I’ve won in my career at least 4 of them were won at competitions in the U.S. with the most recent being in the summer of 2015 at the Ladies of Hip Hop international b-girl battle. Any Shoutouts? - Shout out to my biggest supporters my whole life my parents Mike and Enola Alsterlund. - To My crew ‘Legendary’, - To My company ‘T.A.T. trash a tresor’, - To My family ‘Bbboyizm Dance Company’, - To ‘RAD no excuses no limits’ and ‘Blueprint for Life Social Work through Hip Hop’ Lastly shout out to the Montreal Street Dance community (the best in the world) - And all the artists world wide who are dedicated to the mastery of their art form and to using their art form to better themselves and help others.

With new changes better security and a new purchase from a bigger shark Plenty of fish still has many fish in it’s sea to catch. The platform is even bigger and stronger with more bait to catch more fish more traps to keep away bad fishermen, this site is all about big business and longevity. As more and more people tap on the POF AP the more popular it becomes and bigger by the day online dating becomes. Older stereotypes labeled people who met online are for the reserved happy or non responsive people you might not want to date anyway. In today’s world who are we to judge people and what does it get us nothing just a bunch of judgments. Online dating is easy, even free, it’s a safer way to screen someone before meeting or even talking. Women can meet anyone they choose on their terms, most sites make it fun and simple to follow. Ladies remember men enjoy a friend request or a hello and getting a nice pic comment to open the lines of communication just as much as you do so don’t be shy to bite. Planning a date being standard is choosing a cafe, Tim Hortons, a bite to eat or a drink at a lounge it’s not recommended to step it up too fancy on the first date. Often meeting in person can be different than your online experience and if Sparks fly, go for it. You never know who you can meet you just may find the new him or her in your life. From the young to the seniors,

Good girls turned Bad

people are breaking up and making up, some are saying goodbye to say hello again. A new start fresh again a first date in a long time can be nerve racking for some just out a bad relationship and rebounding or simply bored and want to talk first what’s bad for you may be great for her and vice versa in the fast paced world we live in now. Keeping it true, up front and honest, always make you sexier even if the truth is not what you want to hear being 100 is the best quality. Plenty of fish has taken away, it’s intimate encounters section now wanting to focus more on people seeking more meaningful relationships. There are plenty of dating sites that caters more to intimate encounters and sex which works for that clientele which has a big market share of users as well. Never judge a book by it’s cover but even more than ever, what we see on the outside is not what’s going on in the inside women included. Being an altravert, shy, sweet and innocent girl doesn’t mean that under the sheets she’s not a totally different woman. A good girl becoming the dominant one in bed might just imply that this good girl side you see is only a front. Many women have a controlling nature but closed doors and the publics perception this quiet shy sweetheart is eager to show you how to take up a notch under the sheets. The bad girl who looks like the she’s the one to rock your world often is the submissive one wanting to be taken submissive. Open sex allows us to connect to our inner self and with the right person the real deep needs of your wants can be explored and satisfied.

AVIATION’S MOST HISTORIC FEMALE AMELIA EARHART

Amelia Earhart was and still is the most famous female aviator of our time. Her famous Lockheed Electra disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on June 2, 1937 while she was trying to fly around the world with Fred Noonan. Within hours of her disappearance, rescue workers began scouring the area for signs of her or her airplane. The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard launched the largest and most expensive air and sea search in American history. Make note her husband didn’t give up on her either, he searched for six more years after the Navy stopped with his own private research team and still they found nothing, Amelia Earhart had vanished into thin air. In an official report, the U.S. government concluded that the two seasoned flyers, unable to locate their destination of Howland Island, ran out of fuel, crashed into the water and sank. Earhart was declared legally dead on January 5, 1939. The question of why and where her plane went down, however, has never been put to rest.

Some theorists believe Earhart was actually a secret agent working for the U.S. government, she intentionally deviated from their course to spy on Japanese-occupied islands in the Pacific, she returned safely to the United States, changed her name and lived her life and lastly touched down on a remote South Pacific island called Nikumaroro, which at the time of their disappearance was uninhabited and known as Gardner Island. The Earhart Project, a division of the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), is dedicated to investigating the Nikumaroro hypothesis. Since 1989, they’ve assembled a collection of artifacts that includes improvised tools, shoe remnants and aircraft wreckage that is consistent with Earhart’s Electra. A British colonial officer found the remains of a castaway on Nikumaroro. The bones were sent to Fiji for analysis and ultimately misplaced. Three pieces of a pocket knife, shells that had been cut open, fragments of a glass cosmetic jar, bits of makeup are exciting news but the most intriguing of all are bone fragments that may be from a human. With the help of cutting-edge DNA technology, the new items could finally reveal how Earhart and Noonan spent their final days. No more information has been shared since.

Vesna Vulovic born 3 January 1950 was a Serbian former flight attendant, she holds the distinction of being the world record holder, according to the Guinness Book of Records, for surviving the highest fall without a parachute at 33,333 ft. Her flight JAT 367 had been destroyed while cruising at 33,000 feet by a bomb planted by Croatian separatists none of 22 other passengers and crew survived. She suffered a fractured skull, three broken vertebrae (one crushed completely) that left her temporarily paralyzed from the waist down, and both legs broken. She was in a coma for 27 days. In an interview, she commented that according to the man who found her, “I was in the middle part of the plane. I was found with my head down and my colleague on top of me. One part of my body with my leg was in the plane and my head was out of the plane. A catering trolley was pinned against my spine and kept me in the plane. The man who found me says I was very lucky. He was in the German Army as a medic during World War II. He knew how to treat me at the site of the accident.” Vulovic continued working for JAT at a desk job following a full recovery from her injuries. She regained

MIRACLE FLIGHT ATTENDANT LIVES FALLING 33,000 FEET

the use of her legs and continued to fly sporadically. She claims she has no fear of flying, which she attributes to the loss of memory of the crash, and she even enjoys watching movies with plane crashes. She is considered a national heroine throughout the former Yugoslavia.

Vulovic was awarded the Guinness Record Title by Paul McCartney at a ceremony in 1985. but she was dismissed in 1990 for expressing views critical of Yugoslav ruler Slobodan Milošević. She participated in protests against his rule afterwards, that led to his ousting. Many believe that her status as a national heroine prevented the authorities from arresting her despite her open defiance of the Milosevic government. She continues to be vocal in politics in Serbia.

4 STRONG WOMEN ON THE TRUDEAU RAMP

IT’S MY JOB TO GET THE JOB DONE

Meet Keighia Sheppard supervisor for the ramp of Air Transat she definitely a go getter starting off working in the bag room then onto flights then o to being a lead and now supervising Keighia has seen it all. As if loading massive amounts of cargo, luggage on time, safely and accurately all around the world is already stressful, tack on earning the respect of your all male ramp workers. working as a female lead is a special feat supervising the leads and ramp that’s a whole other responsibility and it’s not any woman younger or older you have to have tough skin.

I MIGHT BE PETIT BUT I GOT A BIG JOB TO DO

Meet Little Karine, a girl at Trudeau that’s not scared to get dirty and not intimidated by big planes, a company full of only men and lots of jet fuel. She’s the only female refueler fueling airplanes at Trudeau airport in Montreal, QC. for Swissport fueling and it’s not an easy job. The weather in the winter is grueling, the equipment is heavy, smelly and cumbersome to pull and lift,. This is not the flight attendant asking you if you want coffee or tea she is asking the capt if he’s happy with 65,000 litres of fuel she just put on his aircraft. So what motivates her to work as a aircraft refuelr at Trudeau?

THEY CALL ME JENNY FROM THE RAMP

Meet Jenny she’s a 3 year old ramp agent working for Swiss port on every commercial plane arriving at Trudeau you can imagine. She does it all from guiding them in to loading them to pushing them back and it’s an experience she’s happy she made. She originally wanted to be a flight attendant and answered an airport ad for a ramp job thinking it would be a cool way to help get in to flight attending. After seeing the flight attendant job closer she now knows she wants to be a security screening officer and is working her way over to Catsa. She said she one of the boys and can deal with them. Although, Jenny says the men at Trudeau are very sweet to her and she enjoys working with them. She still loves the uniform better at Catsa but she knows she can handle herself around the boys now from the is experience. Good luck Jenny keep up the great work.

V DRIVES HER BIG TRUCKS OF FOOD TO HER PLANES

— I already got my class 1 from a course I took in Saint-Jerome soooo many years ago, so basically I can drive big rigs! Trucks I’m driving right now are just a sample of what I’m able to drive! Meet V she’s an amazing woman the only one in her company at gate gourmet driving big trucks full of food and getting it to her flights one after the other on time safely and accurately. It’s no easy task and she has the respect of everyone who sees her coming. She knows her job and can do it just as well if not better than most men on the line with her. — I’m really happy with my job, but it’s tough honestly! It’s a hard job for a man but even harder for a woman!

THE THRILL OF VICTORY & THE AGONY OF DEFEAT

Ronda Rousey - Still a Champion after her loss It seems like this famous phrase was meant for Ronda Rousey. As the bantam UFC women’s champion Ronda is famous for slamming opponents to the ground and crippling their arms to utter pain. The world thought she was invincible until Holly Holmes shattered her record and changed her life in a unbelievable 2nd round kick to her head and knocking her out taking the UFC bantam championship title from her.

After this fight Ronda’s brain was slow for two days, her teeth in her bottom jaw were loose and her will to even live was questionable. Her boyfriend Travis Browne embraced her and saved her life she said and with his support. With her championship fighting spirit she regained her strength to move forward and has taken a few steps back to leap ahead again it seems. We all have lessons to learn and this would be the lesson to teach her what she was really made of and how to truly respect and appreciate winning. After appearing on Ellen, Ronda touched hearts admitting her most vulnerable secrets about wanting to kill herself after the fight and even crying on the show. Ellen supported her with the audience and to know whether she wins or looses she has already her biggest battle of fear itself. She is an amazing role model for all to look up to. It’s not the end just a new beginning for Ronda Rousey.

SIZE DOES

MATTER Female Celebs and their Escalades

Escalade? Sometimes they drive themselves, or it’s their ride to court. One thing is for sure the Cadillac Escalade has got plenty of female celebrities as huge fans with the GMC Denali coming up in the ranks behind the Escalade. Females love the Escalade brand of luxury SUV truck and it is here to stay. The fad hasn’t died down or jumped to another truck that easy. Other trucks like a Range Rover and Lincoln are in the market but not like the Escalade. This is like the iphone and galaxy competition but in the world of luxury SUV trucks with alot bigger price tag to but and to fix. From Beyonce to Taylor Swift to Rihanna, stars like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Paris Hilton love their big trucks and for them the size does matter. Like their male counterparts, they want a big truck bigger and often modify their Escalades with unique paint, interiors and rims. But what’s the whole big deal. Many women can afford a bigger car note are no longer looking for just the small compact cars to just drive them to work, save on the gas and do my groceries with. Celebs have inspired lots of women to go for it and opt for a truck still with all those concerns but just know an Escalade is not

QC: Hollywood-Escalade obsession?

• Defines the look, it says boss • Security is a major plus, women feel in better command of the road in a truck versus a car. • It’s a sexy truck inside and out • It’s perfect wearing heels, boots or runners. • Stepping out an Escalade is simply sweet. • Cadillac Escalade gets attention so if you want some, it brings it. • Plenty of room in the back for kids, bags and girlfriends to go out with.

cheap, but it’s a luxury and can be affordable. If not a new one, a used and older year can satisfy your needs, they are all still gorgeous. Contact a used vehicle broker outside a dealership as well we recommended our professional and popular auto broker Nik from autoiv. com for getting you into a perfect used Escalade this Spring or summer in Montreal. H

owever the term bitch is derived from the Greek goddess Artemis. As she is the goddess of the hunt, she was often portrayed with a pack of hunting dogs and sometimes transformed into an animal herself. The word “Bitch” also is said to come from the 1150 citation needed word bicche, which was developed from the Old English word bicce. It can also be from traced to the Old Norse word bikkja for “female dog”. Today being a bitch has morphed itself both applicable to men and women as men can be referred to being a bitch I.e. like saying he is less of a man, homosexual or simply not strong like other men. Rhetorically women use bitch to give themselves props expressions like “that’s my girl” can be - “that’s my bitch”. It’s a word that has a double edged sword in bed sex partners can call each other a bitch and the taboo of it becomes erotic, sexy and a turn on for pleasure as one lover establishes dominance over another so why still the fuss when we use the word bitch in so many acceptable ways. The word out of context is a hard hitting diss to women, historically it was a harsher word than even the word whore. Black music culture has liberated the word totally different, the first rapper to use the word bitch on record was Duke Bootee on his classic 1983 song with Grandmaster Flash, “New York New York” He says he ain’t gonna pay no child support / because the bitch left him without a second thought.” Slick Rick’s “La Di Da Di” in (1985) was also one of the first rap songs to use the term Bitch. Snoop Dogg who in his debut made it cool to say Bitch as “Beeatch” morphing it to even another level. Pop superstar Rihanna’s song entitled “Bad Bitch” featuring Beyoncé reiterates the line “I’m a bad bitch” making it cool to be a bad bitch. Rapper Trina has a song titled “Da baddest bitch” and Nicki Minaj is another female rap icon who uses the term in her song “Starships” where she says “bad bitches like me is hard to come by”. As a man think twice how you use the word and remember in the case women have liberties with this word that we don’t. Remember when going to insult a woman this word strikes home because of the root of the word being a female dog and taken out of context you might just get a slap calling a woman a bitch, pick your battles carefully here. By 1974, Elton John had a hit single with “The Bitch Is Back”, in which he says “bitch” repeatedly referring to himself as the bitch and Boy George called himself a bitch after splitting with Elton John so men have roots to the word too.

Sasha Chaa is a new, young and vibrant singer with amazing talent, rich content and some heartfelt songs with meaningful substance. She is not motivated by fame or fortune, but more so by her personal purpose. Sasha’s life calling is to sing, however, she loves all forms of art, including dancing, acting, photography and painting. It’s been 3 years now since she recorded her first single “On the upside” and shooting her first official music video in New York city. Sasha has grown a lot with 4indamorning and alongside her is her producer and manager Spark. “My sole goal was to see her develop all the fundamentals she needed to have in music, now she’s got that covered now and I can push her even further”. Now very confident in the business and with her own writing really polished, Sasha is the biggest part and creative force behind producing and directing her music and video concepts”. As a fashion forward and beautiful young singer Sasha’s on track to launching her music to the next level and Belly Dancer is

the first sexy and sultry single off her forthcoming album to be released later in 2016. Sasha expresses herself with her music and all forms of art to express her views on life, the world and love. Her new single “Belly Dancer” is allowing her to break free of all the chains that have held her back and this song represents her freedom to take control of her life for herself. As the song says, I’m is not a belly dancer, i just move like one, but listening to her new single it sounds like she’s making all the right moves with her music and her look. We see nothing but success ahead for Sasha Chaa. Here’s what she had to say to 4AM NEWS:

[4AM NEWS:] Choose two colors that make up who you are and tell us why they personify you? [SASHA:] I don’t think any color would personify me because my mood changes all the time when it comes to colors, but I can say my favorite color is Purple, as it’s my birthstone; Amethyst. [4AM NEWS:] Musically, what are you striving for in your new songs the most? [SASHA:] Musically speaking, I’m going towards wide/ open, feel sounds with a mix of up tempos and slow jams, give a flavor to each genre. Lyrically, I’d say the ones you can definitely relate from, inspire you or even better just a fun jam to listen to driving on the highway. [4AM NEWS:] What female artist, actor or celebrity do you think you could be best friends for life without regrets for what you know? [SASHA:] Hmm.... I would probably call Jennifer Lopez, I feel like she has a great vibe and I admire how she remains humble. Besides, I need some of those dance moves *giggles*. [4AM NEWS:] What talk show would you love to perform on the most and why? [SASHA:] I would most probably love to be on the Ellen Degeneres Show, she truly supports artists and their music or art, she’s simply awesome. [4AM NEWS:] What is your new single Bellydancer mean to you and what should it mean to the listeners? [SASHA:] Well to start, Belly Dancer is part of my culture (the North African side), thought it would be interesting for my debut single to have something that’s from my root which is also part of different cultures I believe. for others I’d want them to do the same if I “Move like a Belly Dancer” I’d like them to move the way they want. Because we all matter, similarities in differences are what I believe in. [4AM NEWS:] Where do you see yourself in 1 year from now and then 1 year after? [SASHA:] In one year I see myself had released my very 1st album, starting to tour and explore the world, meet amazing, talented producers and artists, a lot of collaboration, bring new projects and make them happen as i grow along [4AGM NEWS:] What kind of show will the public expect to see from Sasha Chaa? [SASHA:] Ah! Surprise! Well, I don’t prefer to be predictable in any performance of mine, but I do know that it will be very exciting, energetic, and moving to some of the people, a right blend of colors and emotions!

One word answers:

1 strength 1 weakness? Strength: smile and give a lot, weakness: food! What do your cats and dog bring to you in your life? Happiness To start your tour first city to kick off and last city to close? Start with Montreal (hometown) finish with Calgary (where it all started). A song you have a title for but haven’t written yet? Talkin’ too much Your favorite food? Indian (yum)

Who would you sign???? Rihanna VS Beyonce R&B - Pop What a great match, both are incredible singers and performers. People will say Rihanna has sold double the amount of records in half of the time of Beyonce. Others will say Beyonce is the leader having 20 Grammys with more charted singles and much more countless awards not to mention she is worth hundreds of millions – “on her own money”. Beyonce has also sustained an amazing career on top of charts both in a group with Destiny’s child and solo double the duration of Rihanna. Rihanna is so strong as an artist that every A-list artist calls for her to feature on their records to bring up their sales up while commanding a young influence Rihanna is social media. She is an iconic superstar and can make any song a hit just talking on a song. She’s younger with plenty of years ahead of her Rihanna is just getting cooking now her 8 Grammys and 5 world records prove it. This is a great divided, split but who would you want to sign if you were a record exec with a job on the line looking for a top female artist to sign.

Dance - Pop Ariana Grande VS Demi Lovatto Both are in their young twenties, both started in the entertainment business early and roughly the same time around 2008. Demi will lead in having had more singles at roughly 24 VS Ariana at 15. Demi has more total awards, but Ariana is now one of the hottest young singing sensations delivering top vocals compared to the best in music she’s a lot more diverse than Demi vocally. Popularity wise Demi scored big with X Factor but social media is buzzing and trends for Arianna a lot more especially with the recent release of her 3rd album Dangerous Woman who would you want on your roster if you had to sign one.

Jennifer Hudson VS Fantasia Soul - R&B Both artists hail from the popular TV singing show “American Idol”. Jennifer Hudson has had success as an Oscar award winning actress and now Jennifer Hudson is playing the wife of Nelson Mandela, Winne . Hudson has sold 1,280,000 albums and 2,237,000 singles in the United States as of February 2012. In 2013, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Fantasia has sold 2,842,000 albums and 1,425,000 tracks in the United States In 2012 VH1 ranked her number 32 out of the 100 Greatest Women in Music. Fantasia is about to embark on her first major role playing the legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and Grammy award winning artist too.. Which one would you sign as your Diva on your label?

Pop Rock Katy Perry VS Taylor Swift Katy Perry was the highest grossing artist last year, however Taylor Swift is the most popular female pop singer by virtue of record sales. Katy Perry is explosive with everything she does while Taylor Swift is unstoppable with her hits and her chart stopping singles. Both are social media magnets and both of their concerts sell out. Both singers have amazing voices and with total control, sweet textures and wide ranges yet one dominates in one thing while the other dominates in another. So who is the better choice between these two superstars if you had to choose only one for your female pop singer slot?

Started with a track only with a hook/chorus on it sent to Spark from NY producer and DJ OG Mel E Mel. When Spark heard it he knew it was a hit and wanted Sasha to hear it and feel it the same way he did. Sasha did, she loved the hook and wrote the verses immediately to it. Spark recorded Sasha’s vocals with his engineer Yann, soon after at Golan Studios, the versus fit the song just right and she laid her vocals on point. Homegrown remixed and produced Belly Dancer with a organic sound, lots of drums bringing new musical melody lines and gave it a groovy vibe to sing along or dance too. “It’s got that seasoning that you can only get from down home” says Homegrown. We love this version as it in it’s own lane and enjoyably different from what we hear everyday. Solitair is a Toronto, platinum producer, who has produced for Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Melanie Fiona, Kardinall Offishall and Elephant Man to name a few. He produced the soundtrack for the Belly Dancer as a dreamy pop type of song with a live feel and bump to it. Solitair brought the video story to life with the music co-produced with Sasha from start to finish. For the club remix Cecil Collins from CeSoul music brought Atlanta producer “Bizzo”. The remix takes a classic belly dance sound and twists it into a club track with a big beat. Cecil Collins, a very respected and accomplished Canadian music exec is the publisher of the record and is very excited to be launching the Belly Dancer single on radio and TV not only in Canada but the U.S. and European markets as well.

The Smoke Behind The Meat To know the truth you go to the source so we went to Snowdon Deli and knocked on the door of the 4 owners Sophie, Hart, Ian and Yanni. Together, they carry on a 70 year proud Jewish tradition of serving the best smoke meat Montreal has to offer. The Snowdon deli business was passed down from the original Morantz family god — fathers of the smoke meat to this generation, and new school chefs. Together all 4 owners account for the success of the Snowdon deli and the smoke behind the meat. Here’s what all 4 had to say: How has the deli business changed since the early days? (SOPHIE)

At the Snowdon Dell, not much really! We pretty much still operate as we did throughout the ages. Maintaining a close and personal relationship with our clients whether it be about a joyous occasion or a loss in the family, talking about football or hockey or any sport for that matter, or just to hang out at the counter and eat some karnatzel, all our clients know they can come to us for anything. That’s something about our business that hasn’t changed. You can still come to the counter and just talk with us. It feels like a deli thing. What has changed, though, is that the younger population are not as familiar with the old style Jewish deli foods such as Kishke, Kugel, Gefilte Fish, Herring, Carp, Chopped Liver… so damn good….. But we are seeing a resurgence of younger people ordering these items. Especially new customers who try these items for their first time, they come back weekly especially for that. What makes your smoke meat different than the rest of the shops? (YANNI)

What tradition would the originators still want you to do that they would be happy to see you still doing the same way they did back in the day? (HART)

Everyone in the Jewish community knew each other 70 years ago when they were living in the Plateau all the way to Papineau. When the population started moving west to the area of Snowdon and Hampstead and Cote St.Luc and N.D.G. the deli was already here where it stands today. It became like a community centre where you could come get your ethnic foods and see familiar faces. It is the same today as was back then. And we will keep it that way. We are still carrying on the same traditions as my Grandfather and Uncles and always will. We keep a close relationship with our clientele and keep the quality of food to a high standard. If our recipes change and its not to the liking of our clients, we’ll hear it, big time. Our clients have been coming to the store for 70 years now. They know they can tell us anything and that enables us to serve them better. They sometimes even come behind the counter and help themselves to danish or cookies and just chat with us. Many feel as if the store is a second home and we like it that way. We are lucky to have such faithful clients and I believe this is a tradition my Grandfather and Uncles would be proud of. What makes the Snowdon Deli the most popular Jewish deli in Montreal after so long? (IAN)

Our Old Fashion Smoked Meat is a semi dry cured, meaning that it still has some moisture in the meat, thus making a beautifully balanced sandwich. But we don’t just have Old Fashion Smoked Meat, we also have Regular Smoked Meat. Regular Style is a great meat as it contains less seasoning and is much more moist. Its almost creamy in taste and texture. Personally, I love the Medium Old Fashion Sandwich. Others prefer Regular. Smoked Meat is a very personal thing and can get quite controversial. And we have Corned Beef! The best of the best. Perhaps the king of the meats. We may be the only deli left in Montreal that serves corned beef.

I believe it’s a combination of that we are still the same family (Morantz) since 1946, that we were the first deli to open on Decarie, and that we have maintained our recipes and specialty items for 70 years.

What change would you like to see happen in the future that would be amazing for your business that you haven’t done yet? (YANNI)

Maybe a food truck. This would allow the population of Montreal and Tourists who aren’t familiar with this part of the city and by result, not familiar with us, to know who we are. Although we are the 9th oldest restaurant in the city, there are many who have never been to the store. With a food truck, we can re-introduce our traditional Jewish ethnic foods for all to enjoy. Latkes, Verenikes, Blintzes, Chopp Liver and of course Smoked Meat and Corned Beef! What’s the hardest challenge being a woman in business with three male partners? (SOPHY)

I can’t think of anything gender specific. Business partnerships can be challenging regardless of gender. Especially when there are 4 of us. We have our moments. Generally, though, we get along just fine. We recognize each others strengths and weaknesses and we balance each other out pretty well. We make fun of one another and goof around a lot, too much actually. When I first started working at the deli 15 years ago I was the only and first female behind the counter. Some customers didn’t want me to serve them. Some saw me as a novelty. That was challenging to say at the least. With time and a good sense of humor, they came around. Making the customer laugh is key. Just like any other type of relationship you always want to be around someone who makes you laugh and Jewish deli’s in general are funny places with lots of characters.

BREAST CANCER

ADVANCEMENTS There are an estimated 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., Still, 231,000 women will be diagnosed this year, about 40,000 will die. These women will newly rely on targeted gene therapies, advancements in chemotherapy protocols and even preventive treatments. For breast cancer patients and their loved ones, the scientists who keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible are heroes held in highest esteem. Here are the five biggest breakthroughs in breast cancer research those scientists have made in 2015. 1. A New Drug May Stop An Incurable Type Of cancer.

using data from current patients; it confirms the Oncotype assay is able to predict which treatments would be most effective in early stage, curable breast cancer patients. This helps women avoid toxic and unpleasant chemotherapy if the test reveals their cancers will not respond to it. Hudis noted that this protocol spared 1,626 women from receiving unnecessary chemotherapy. Each of them would have been a candidate for it according to traditional diagnostic standards. “What it means practically is that some proportion of people who have been recommended to get therapy for years really don’t need it.”

The FDA granted accelerated approval to a drug called Palbociclib in February. When used with the breast cancer drug Letrozole in trials, Palbociclib was able to extend the amount of time study participants lived without their cancer progressing. The cocktail was able to stop cancer progression in postmenopausal women with a treatable but incurable type of chronic breast cancer for an average of 20.2 months. Dr. Cliff Hudis, chief of breast medicine service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. “Maybe with more study, the drug will actually help people live longer; that’s the big answer we’re waiting for right now.” Hudis also praised Palbociclib because it is a less toxic form of treatment than chemotherapy. However, the FDA notes that Doctors already know that super aggressive chemotherapy, used in combination serious side effects of the drug do exist. with a drug called Trastuzumab (or by its brand name, Herceptin), works to cure an early stage, but aggressive type of breast cancer known as lymph node a type that affects 15 to 20 percent of all breast cancer patients. In January in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that a much less aggressive chemotherapy drug called Taxol, used in combination with TrastuResearchers have known for some time zumab, was just as effective in helping now that a tumor’s gene can determine women stave off breast cancer recurrence whether cancer patients will respond to and death after 3 years. chemotherapy. The Oncotype Dx test analyzes 21 genes in the tumor to determine whether or not the cancer is likely to recur, and whether or not chemotherapy will make a difference. In September, the New England Journal of Medicine carried the very first study

3. Less aggressive chemotherapy can still be effective.

2. Genetic tumor testing will tell you if chemotherapy will work for you.

4. Bone strengthening medications can stop breast cancer’s spread.

The most common place breast cancer will recur is in the bones, and research has gone back and forth on whether bone-strengthening medications called bisphosphonates, made to treat osteoporosis, can help prevent this. Now, a meta-analysis of these studies published in the journal The Lancet confirms that these osteoporosis medications can reduce breast cancer recurrence in the bone and decrease deaths in postmenopausal women.

5. Immunotherapy is showing more promise in the treatment of incurable cancers. Triple negative breast cancer, accounts for 10-20 percent of all breast cancers. This kind of cancer is more likely to affect young women, black women, Latino women and those with the BRCA1 gene mutation. These tumors do not have estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors or the HER2 growth factor, which means only surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy can be deployed against this kind of tumor, and often to little effect, as the type is more likely to come back and spread. But immunotherapy medication that activates a person’s own immune system against the tumor could one day be a promising therapy for triple negative breast cancer. For instance, an immunotherapy drug was able to halt the cancer’s progression for 24 weeks in 27 percent of participants. The study only had 54 participants, so the results are modest, but the drug’s promise is exciting.

THE

PINK RIBBON The pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness normally seen the most during breast cancer awareness month. The first known use of a pink ribbon was in 1991, when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. The color pink is considered feminine in modern Western countries. It evokes traditional feminine gender roles, caring for other people, being beautiful, being good, and being cooperative. The pink ribbon represents fear of breast cancer, hope for the future, and the charitable goodness of people and businesses who publicly support the breast cancer movement. It is intended to evoke solidarity with women who currently have breast cancer. While specifically representing breast cancer awareness, the pink ribbon is also a symbol and a proxy of goodwill towards women in general. Buying, wearing, displaying, or sponsoring pink ribbon signals that the person or business cares about women. The pink ribbon was officially accepted in 1992 and was derived from the popular red ribbon used for AIDS awareness. Each October, hundreds, if not thousands, of products are embellished with pink ribbons, colored pink, or otherwise sold with a promise of a small portion of the total cost being donated to support breast cancer awareness or research. The first breast cancer awareness stamp in the U.S., featuring a pink ribbon, was issued 1996. In Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint produced a silver commemorative breast cancer coin, 15,000 coins were minted during 2006. On one side of the coin, a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth while the other side has a pink ribbon, 30 million 25-cent coins were minted with pink ribbons during 2006.

Theres 2 qualities I feel coming from you, whether it’s through your Music or Lyrics , The sound of your voice or your performances on stage. Both are great strengths and sensibility. Could you tell me the nature of these qualities wich are often viewed as opposites ?

What is your specialty in art?

Thank you for underlining these qualities. It touches me deeply, for these specific features summarize exactly the color by way of which I try to approach each and every topic, every work I dare to put out. I feel like strength is what is demanded to every human being in this world who still has a conscience and wants to live by it instead of denying it or running away from it. If you want to live your life both feet solid on the ground walking your own path, taking reality by the horns, accepting the fact that you must be unique and therefore, different, that you might have to take the toughest road and therefore rub shoulders with solitude, if you choose not to be a pawn awaiting for the hand that feeds you to make a move for you but instead, to be aware and in power of every action you take so it can honor your intentions, you will need strength. Balance demands strength. Love demands strength. Passion and ambition demand strength. Truth is and demands strength. And there is no way to find strength without sensibility. Otherwise, even your strength is a lie. Sensibility is what keeps us human. It ia what prevents us from becoming automaton of the commercial routine. It detaches us from our ego so we can see and feel everything and everyone else. Sensibility at its peak is ultimate conscience. Working hard for what you will gain for yourself is a necessity. But always having the sensibility of keeping as your focal point what you will be able to give to others, to bring to the universal design, that’s real strength. That’s power.

How have you matured in your life as a person and applied that to your music?

Afro Urban Art! The Imaginary Portrait of black women, noble and proud in an urban African aesthetic is really what characterizes my art so I would say that’s my specialty.

I think this entire interview will answer that question ;) As an artist you have worn many hats, from Mcing, Producing, writing... Do you have a soft spot for one of them in particular and why? Real hard to choose only one, for every discipline has its own vibe, its own buzz and its own possibilities. Closing the door behind me in my studio, submerged in composing music and beats, is such an amazing freedom! No rules, no pressure. Surrounded by instruments and machines, letting the sounds come together as one, transforming them with the new technologies, making them original and expressive, finding that bounce or that crazy melodic line that sticks to your mind all night while you try to sleep…that’s that ish! I admit it; I am somewhat of a studio geek. Luckily, I don’t eat any junk food plus I have my gym room right next to my studio. Lol! So yeah, the freedom of creating music is mesmerizing. But it will never beat the potential, the happening of being live and direct on a stage in front of your people, sharing your soul, looking at them right in the eye and feeling that energy, that true reciprocal sharing, that spiritual communion. What a privilege! Too many artists and entertainers take this for granted! It is the highest gift to be given such attention, to be heard and understood, to even have the opportunity to become a leader, a model, to be put on a pedestal, to be part of those who are respected and command interest when they speak! Even the simple fact of feeling validated, of your actions and constructions provoking a reaction! What?!! What are you gonna do with this now? And there comes the writing part. The reaction you will get from people listening, the deepness of the relation that you build with your fans is directly

linked to your lyrics, your thoughts, your words. With music and melodies, you can entertain, you can distract, you can bring the party, you can move the crowd, even move the souls and engender emotions. That’s amazing in itself. But with the right words, you can reach, you can touch, you can speak! You don’t bring only emotions to life, you bring concepts and ideas! You can say, “I’m with you, I feel you. We are together. We are one.” You can even trigger a riot if you want. You can bring the noise! You can make people think and be conscious of what they feel. Strength in sensibility. Now that’s real power. You collaborated with many artists throughout your career, do you have any wish list of artists you would like to perform with in the future? No, I don’t have any dream collab in mind. Truthfully, I don’t idolize anyone. I think we all have the same potential within who we are and what we do. I’m willing to collaborate with anyone who stays true to who they are, true to their own talent and what they bring that is different or new to the world. Could be any art form, any creation, cause anyone can and should be creative. We are all born to be creative. You know what? I’m still looking forward to creating something really dope and stirring with someone who no one has ever heard about. A young cat coming in with crazy talent and soul, who has not been yet disrupted by the expectations and the rules of the so called game, to whom I could give a push towards his future, sparing him a bunch of useless obstacles, while he brings me back into my present, my abandon, my autonomy. Still looking. It would be litt. I see you did a show recently with Muzion for Black History month are we gonna see more shows in the future? We don’t even have the answer to that question. We go where the cause calls. Let me try to explain it to you in the most concise way possible: Muzion is more than a group. Business wise, it is an imposing brand. An authority. Historically and politically, it is a movement that has shaped and represented an entire generation here in Quebec. I’m talking more than music. I’m talking representativeness, mentality, community, coalition. We have made history. There is a before and an after Muzion. Nothing as replaced it since. So, every time we come out, it is always in respect of that context. There is no way in hell we would put out a new album if the people receiv-

ing it don’t perceived it as such. Because mainly, there’s no way we would waste and annihilate this historical fact and this present power for all of us, who we choose to represent, by letting the segregationist institutions control our release and exposure, use us for their own purposes and put us out for good as if we never existed. You dig? I’m giving you the whole truth now. When we will be, internally and with the people, absolutely united in our independence and therefore necessarily fully appreciated to our true worth by the market leaders with whom we will sit eye to eye and talk business, you’ll get Muzion’s trilogy conclusion. Power FOR the People. Before then, keep watching. We on it. Everything I do and been doing has always been “Moun Mon Mentality, Morniers Dynasty” all day. Watch out for the next step. We coming in with that off the chain, outta this world dopeness real quick. History in the making, endlessly. Et tu te suivras…

What Was the first thing you drew That made you want to do this for a lifetime? This is not as precise drawing that made me want to be a professional artist but the feeling of freedom I have when I create. This is the exchange there with people when I explain, diffuse my art or watch people observe and discussed my art sometimes without knowing that I’m the artist. The basic motivation is the freedom to express myself, to be and press. The feeling of being part of life concretely creating. Then, when I realized that create pictorial works gives me the power to do justice to my ancestors, feed my roots, affirm, bear witness, motivate, criticize, love, share and contribute to the culture I knew my way was in this form of universal expression with which I take part in life actively. What is your specialty in art? Afro Urban Art! The Imaginary Portrait of black women, noble and proud in an urban African aesthetic is really what characterizes my art so I would say that’s my specialty.

Could you see yourself owning your own art gallery or collections touring to different cities?

Writing is also a mode of expression that fascinates me and I practiced for a while in my visual arts projects for a book I dream of seeing in other hands than mine.

Have my own gallery, probably not, have a workshop-gallery or a gallery-boutique, maybe yes. If come a day when I am financially undersheet enough to undertake this project, I probably will. Several gallery begin by being very focused on art, authentically and end up having as priority the profitability of their space to the detriment of their opening goal because their survival depends on it. This perspective and all entrepreneurials challenges that come with me ‘turn-off’ because my priority right now is really expanding my artistic career and to convey my art. Make traveling my works in different cities ... .hell YES! C is my goal! I have the strong impression that my art will be significantly better received outside Québec. I would like to exhibit in all major cities where people are receptive to my art as much for aesthetics as for my artistic approach. What is the future for Maliciouz?

My future is in creation through various mediums and media. I acquired animation knowledge that I have not yet taken the time to explore after my training. Create media works that are part of works deployed in space is something that I greatly want to do in the near future. I count also increased the production of wall and create opportunities for me to make out of the country. Writing is also a mode of expression that fascinates me and I practiced for a while in my visual arts projects for a book I dream of seeing in other hands than mine. What is one word That Describes your best artwork? ‘Unapologetic’

What inspired you to paint? You know that little unsettling feeling, obsessive you get when something bothers us! When to speak, it makes nervous, has to come out! This is what leads to think of a way of expression, which leads to think of a picture, shapes, strong colors representative enough to calm this disturbing feeling. The triggers for this feeling is the basis of my inspiration. Then, all that comes to me in a neutral and dead zone that creates a feeling of disgust as admiration becomes an inspiration to paint. Most often what inspires me to work on a long work are the issues that affect me personally where I chose sorting and somehow my battles. Events marking which I chose to express myself in my own way, often related to my identity because this is what creates in me a sense of urgency to express myself. So what I do through characters as people I meet daily in equally inspire me and I often want to reproduce small details that I see in the face, the expression or energy people. In short, life is an inspiration!
