love is IN THE AIR

Every year, we spend a few months gathering submissions for our Real Weddings section in the magazine. I have to say, this is always one of my favorite times of the year. Flipping through beautiful wedding photos always reminds me of my own wedding.

My husband and I have been married for almost seven years, and we were a bit untraditional. Instead of a big ceremony, we eloped and had my grandparents as our witnesses. For our reception, we invited friends and family to a big outdoor bash. Instead of a white dress, I wore my favorite black gown, and instead of cake, my mom made pie. It was everything Ryan and I wanted—personal, fun, low-stress and the best way to celebrate with those we love.

Reading about how couples in 417-land are adding their own personal touches to their big day is always a ton of fun. It doesn’t matter what the trends are or what time of year it is, brides and grooms will always find ways to add little bits of themselves into their weddings, and I love reading all about it.

This issue is packed with some truly beautiful local weddings. Just turn to p. 49 to see what elopements, receptions and outdoor ceremonies captured our hearts this issue. I hope you find inspiration in these pages and start to plug your own personal touches into your upcoming celebrations no matter how big or small they might be.

DIY BOUQUETS

With the help of local growers like Gooseberry Bridge Farm, brides and grooms select and cut blooms for fresh, in-season wedding arrangements.

Afield of you-pick owers is one of several attractions at Gooseberry Bridge Farm in Rogersville, where visitors can enjoy every thing from tours to see newborn goats and sheep to classes in yoga or painting.

Now, wedding parties also frequent owners Jeremy and Staci Hill’s ower eld to choose blossoms for bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages and centerpieces. These prenuptial you-pick sessions in the Hills’ eld re ects a new and growing desire that Jeremy says is all about saving money and supporting local ower growers. The Hills have about 30 varieties of owers in their eld, and couples are welcome to come shop from the selection.

Hill says more couples are rethinking traditional ideas of what wedding owers can be. “There’s a big trend to buy local owers, not owers that are shipped in from around the world,” he says. Like most tasks on a wedding to-do list, though, planning for DIY arrangements should start well before the big event.

Here are some tips:

KEEP THE SEASON IN MIND

Carnations and roses may be shipped year-round to oral shops, but local growers can o er only what’s in

season. “If you’re getting married in May, the owers are going to be vastly di erent from the owers in October,” Jeremy says. For spring, consider anemones, da odils, ranunculus and tulips.

At Gooseberry Bridge, summer brings cosmos, snapdragons, sun owers and zinnias, which Hill says are one of the most popular choices. Zinnias bloom into autumn, he adds, when amaranth and celosia can add a rustic look to arrangements.

For winter, he suggests buying dried owers from local farms. Dried blooms mixed with wild berries and evergreens give winter bouquets “that boho look,” agrees Cherrelle Hitchcock, who teaches ower ar ranging at Gooseberry Bridge and co-owns Flora & Forge ower farm with her husband, Samuel.

MAKE FLOWER-GATHERING PART OF PRE-WEDDING FUN

Set up an appointment or private opening at a local farm to make sure it has the owers you want, Hill says. Then, within a day or two of the wedding, gather owers with the wedding party. Brides, bridesmaids, grooms, groomsmen and other family members have visited Gooseberry Bridge to do that very thing, Hill says. “Turn it into an event,” he suggests.

KEEP FLOWERS FRESH

Harvest owers in the morning while they’re well-hy drated, Cherrelle Hitchcock says, and use sharp scis sors so as not to bruise stems. Cherrelle also suggests cutting stems too long rather than too short—since, of course, they can’t be uncut.

In addition, remove any foliage that might touch water in containers. “Anything that’s touching the wa ter, it’s basically making tea,” Jeremy Hill says. “That tea foments bacteria growth.” To keep owers fresh, add to each container a mix of one or two teaspoons of bleach, one or two teaspoons of lemon juice, and one teaspoon of sugar to feed the owers, Hill says. Then, store them in a cool or air-conditioned space and change their water daily.

DEVELOP AN EYE FOR ARRANGEMENTS

Choose owers based on how they’ll be used, Hitchcock says. For example, sturdier owers are needed for boutonnieres, while more delicate blos soms can work in arrangements or bouquets.

When creating a centerpiece, Hitchcock says, rst crisscross greenery in the vase to make a nest. Add ller owers next, then focal owers. “The last thing you want to put in are airy bits—anything with a spike, like snapdragons,” she says. “It’s like the twinkling or sparkle to a bouquet.”

To make a hand-tied bridal bouquet, form a spiral by crossing two stems in your hand, rotating them, then adding two more—and so on. This process keeps blooms from crushing each other, Hitchcock explains. Tie the stems together, then cut them a little shorter—say, six to eight inches from where they cross.

Finally, so that it stays fresh and onlookers can admire it, Hitchcock advises holding it low and at an angle, not against your chest—and carrying a vase of water to put it in between photos.

LOVE NOTES

These local couples share their favorite moments and best tips from their wedding day.

FAVORITE MOMENT FROM THE BIG DAY

“My favorite part was rolling out the tv to watch my hockey team play in the playoffs. Our wedding guests cheered along, enjoyed Andy’s Frozen Custard, and made this moment special. It’s not lost on me that this was untraditional, but our guests were close family and friends that provided a space for us to make this night our own. I’ll be forever grateful for that.”—Hope & Cory, learn more about their big day on p. 66

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

If you’re changing your last name, skip the line and do this instead.

In 2019, when newlywed Crystal Reynolds wanted to change her last name, she de cided to try something old.

BEST TIP TO A GREAT WEDDING

“Go with your gut. If there is something that you want that isn’t the norm, go with it! Details that reflect the couple’s personality makes a wedding fun.”—Marissa & Shane, learn more about their big day on p. 70

Reynolds had already stopped by the U.S. Social Security Administration’s busy Springfield office at 1570 W. Battlefield two or three times to take a number—and a place in line to wait with her marriage certificate and other forms of identification needed for a name change and a new Social Security card.

As a certified public accountant, though, Reynolds was busy enough herself. She didn’t want to cancel client meetings to wait at the administration office, and the office, while open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, isn’t open on weekends.

under “How to Submit This Application” on the third page of the online application for a new card—and sent her completed application and personal documents by certified mail to the Springfield office.

In her snail-mail envelope, she even enclosed a polite business letter to let staff there know what she needed. “I thought the worst-case scenario was they would send me a letter and tell me it was unacceptable,” she says.

Not so, though. Within a week, the office called to verify receipt of her application and documents. Within two weeks, the office mailed Reynolds’s documents back to her—and all she had to do then was wait for her new Social Security card to arrive the same way.

FAVORITE MOMENT

When had my first look with my dad. My dad doesn't cry. He is a very, very tough guy. But, when he saw me, we just hugged each other for about or minutes, and we were both ust sobbing into each other.”—Jessica & Chad, learn more about their big day on p. 50

“They’re very nice, and they tell you how long the wait is going to be,” she says. “But not that many people can get off in the middle of the business day for that long, and I really didn’t have time.”

Finally, Reynolds visited the administra tion’s website, found the online “Application for a Social Security Card,” read the fine print

Instead of stressful, Reynolds calls it all a “lovely experience,” adding: “I never had to wait in line or anything.”

For more information about applying for a new Social Security card, go to ssa.gov/onli neservices. Under “Find Help and Answers,” click on the link “Request a Replacement Social Security Card” to begin an application.

Jessica Rogers & Chad Wade

Jessica and Chad met when Chad transferred to Jessica’s o ce. The two spent time together out side of the o ce with their coworkers and mutual friends, and their friendship grew as time went on. At a conference for their company, Chad asked Jessica directly if she was interested in him. After returning home to Dallas, they started dating in secret. “You are not supposed to date coworkers,” Jessica says. “But, we obviously de veloped an attraction and a relationship.” Eventually, they got caught by someone at work. Both of them had to sit down for an interview and were separately asked if the company needed to worry about separating them or if they already knew this was the person they would marry. Without knowing the other was being asked this, Jessica and Chad both answered they knew this was it for them.

Chad surprised Jessica with the proposal while they visited his family in Michigan. After the two had spent

the evening together, he got down on one knee while they were on the beach enveloped in the setting sun. The surprises didn’t stop there though; he also surprised Jessica with an engagement party where she got to celebrate with her parents and friends.

When it came to the wedding, Jessica knew she wanted something classic. She chose Top of the Rock as their venue because of the location and the rustic feeling that came with the chapel. The couple compromised on the size of the wedding and ended up having about 80 guests—a perfect amount to make the wedding feel inti mate but still full of the ones they loved. Instead of doing a rst look, Jessica and Chad decided to do a rst touch and read their vows to each other. Jessica says nothing could have ruined the magic of their wedding day; she got to marry her best friend, and at the end of the day that was all that mattered.

Kaitlin Denney & Christopher Powell

Kaitlin Denney and Christopher Powell were best friends for four years before they started dating. When they began dating in 2021, the two had an unspoken feeling they were going to get married. “Chris was always consistent,” Kaitlin says. “I think that in my life, that’s what I needed.” Christopher had a little girl, and Kaitlin had a little boy before they got married. The two worked together to make sure everyone was ready for the next step. “Whenever it’s not just two people coming together, but you’re blending your families and your kiddos, you just have to be mindful of all the moving pieces,” Kaitlin says.

The proposal was intimate and happened at Kaitlin’s loft, a place that became the couple’s spot over the course of their relationship and friendship. They both decided there was no reason to wait to get married, so they hired Courtney from Allie Rose Events to help ensure all the boxes were checked for their big day. While planning a

wedding can be stressful, Kaitlin says Courtney made the big day feel like a breeze. “She made a process that is very taxing and very stressful for a lot of couples so seamless.”

As for the big day, it snowed. Christopher jokes that Kaitlin must have paid extra for the snow that came down on their wedding day. The cocktail party was initially planned to be outside at Greenhouse Two Rivers, but plans changed and the couple made it work. Although the snow was unexpected, Kaitlin says she wouldn’t have changed a thing. The snow created an incredible backdrop against the glass windows and t right in with Kaitlin’s color scheme of whites and neutrals.

Doing a rst look with their children and having their pastor from church o ciate the wedding are just two of the ways Kaitlin and Christopher made their wedding special and lled with the love from those surrounding them. “We had everyone there that we loved, and it was just perfect,” Kaitlin says. — Michelle Lewis

Morgan Demczak & Jake Hembree

Amutual friend of Morgan and Jake set the two up on a blind date, something neither of them expected to enjoy. For their second date, Morgan gave Jake one requirement: It had to be something she could wear sweatpants to. The two drove through Sonic and went to an arcade where they stood side by side playing against each other. “That’s when everything changed,” Morgan says. The conversation on their rst date had felt forced and formal but the casual atmosphere of their second date allowed Morgan and Jake to talk about their lives and their families.

Throughout their relationship, they have introduced each other to new hobbies and have encouraged each other through new habits. “The things he’s really good at are the areas that are my weak points and vice versa,” Morgan says. “We’re healthier people together.”

Ten and a half months after their rst date, Jake sur prised Morgan and proposed on Christmas Day. Planning

for the wedding happened in just three months. The cou ple sat down and made decisions together and established non-negotiables. “We knew we wanted an intentional in timate time with the people that mattered to us,” Morgan says. More than anything, the two wanted to create a night that was centered around their connections and friendships. With only 80 guests, Morgan and Jake were able to have a memorable and personal wedding that exceeded their expectations. Guests could choose to play rounds of ping pong, listen to live music or get custom watercolor portraits painted as their favors. After their wedding, the newlyweds waited a day before they left for their honeymoon to have a lake day with their families and guests. The celebration on the water added to the summer theme and colors of the ceremony the day prior. Looking back, Morgan says spending genuine time with their favorite people over the weekend was the best part of the wedding. — Michelle Lewis

Sophie Wolken & Jeremy Edwards

When Jeremy invited Sophie to a concert that his friends were supposed to join them at, no one except Jeremy and Sophie showed up. At the end of the evening, they both agreed that the night had been more fun than they had expected, and a rst date was planned. When their second solo hang session went smoothly, the couple o cially started dating.

Jeremy popped the question a week after Sophie’s birthday while they were visiting Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Jeremy placed roses around the Love statue along the trail outside the museum. “He picked up a rose, and I told him to put it back immediately because I thought it was part of the exhibition,” Sophie says. When he spun her around to ask her to marry him, Sophie was taken by surprise.

One of the things the couple prioritized the most while planning their wedding was the choice of venue.

They wanted something that was beautiful but was also accessible. Greenhouse Two Rivers was nothing short of perfect for the couple. The natural beauty of the venue paired well with their love of nature and the colors they wanted to incorporate into their big day.

“Before we knew it, we were walking back down the aisle and we’d been married,” Sophie says. After the cer emony, the newlyweds were able to sit down with each other and relax over a meal. The moment of rest was a direct contrast to the busyness of the day. To add to the intimacy of the event, the reception concluded with a private last dance between the couple. Spending the moment together alone made them really feel like husband and wife. “We just got to hold each other and kind of soak in the day,” Sophie says. — Michelle Lewis

NATURAL BEAUTIES: 1. Sophie and Jeremy’s mutual love of plants helped them decide on the green and neutral colors of the day. Sophie chose to let her bridesmaids pick from a variety of colors and dress silhouettes so they could find something that paired with their skin tones and that they felt comfortable in.
1 2 3
The couple used greenery to create table runners as centerpieces paired with single stems. The arrangement was simple and budget-friendly. The florals from the day came from Fleur Floral Studio. Sophie approached the studio with an idea of what she wanted and allowed them to create something beautiful for her bouquet. A close friend of the couple performed their ceremony, which added something extra-special to the day.

SWEET TREATS: 1. Guests celebrated the new chapter of Sophie and Jeremy’s life together with a sparkler sendoff. 2. Sophie and Jeremy agreed that cake wasn’t going to be the best choice for their wedding day. Instead, they decided to serve a variety of pies. 3. The outside space at Greenhouse Two Rivers was perfect for this couple’s reception. The natural look and open space gave their guests plenty of room to mingle and enjoy the outdoors.

Hope Ortego & Cory Faison

After meeting on Bumble, Hope and Cory began dating in January 2020. As fate would have it, the shutdown that resulted from the pandemic helped the new couple form a strong connection. “It really forced us to have meaningful and deeper conversations,” Hope says. Within the rst year of the relationship, Cory and Hope supported each other through big life changes and di cult times. When Cory moved to New York for work, they had a long distance relationship until Hope decided to move to New York to be by Cory’s side. The couple got engaged in December 2021 after spending the day together doing their favorite things in New York City.

Hope and Cory knew they didn’t want to have a tradi tional wedding and decided to have an intimate ceremony with fewer than 20 guests at Lightbox in Spring eld. “We had plans to go back to Spring eld to see my family over Memorial Day weekend, and we just kind of threw out

the idea of doing an elopement of sorts,” Hope says. Because of the size of the ceremony, Hope knew she wanted to support local businesses with the wedding. While still living in New York, Hope worked with her sister in Spring eld to plan and book the wedding.

Hope and Cory got ready and arrived at the venue together on the morning of their wedding, while Hope’s best friend performed the ceremony that afternoon. Little details like that added to the intimacy of the day. After the ceremony, the couple joined their guests for a candlelit dinner from Ocean Zen and concluded the night watching the New York Rangers Game with Andy’s Frozen Custard as dessert. The night was everything the couple envisioned their wedding would be. “It was very intentional: lled with immediate family and two of my best friends,” Hope says. “It was beautiful and very special to the both of us.”

HOMETOWN LOVE

Even though Hope and Cory had moved to New York, they returned to Springfield for their elope ment to be near family and friends and to support some of their favorite local businesses.

so the big day felt extra-special and intimate.

BETTER TOGETHER:

1. The staircase in the lobby at Lightbox welcomed guests with an adornment of flowers. 2. While the ceremony only lasted 15 minutes, it was everything the couple could have wanted. Hope’s best friend married the couple surrounded by candlelight. 3. For the New York Rangers game a few guests changed into jerseys to show their support for the team. A love of sports is something Hope and Cory share and wanted to showcase during their wedding day. 4. Cory and Hope kept their guest list small,

PERSONAL TOUCHES: 1. Hope’s youngest sister, Haven MacFee, helped with the planning of the big day and was an essential part of the wedding. 2. Hope decided to skip the cake for dessert and instead served Andy’s Frozen Custard to their guests. 3. Surrounded by the ones they loved, Hope and Cory enjoyed a candlelit dinner after saying “I Do.” Having all guests sit at one table allowed them to connect with each other and celebrate the newlyweds.

Marissa Monkres & Shane Puente

Marissa and Shane started dating when they met in college at Evangel University. After dating for a few months, in Spring 2019, the couple broke up. Like magnets though, the two kept gravitating to each other and slowly became friends again after spending time apart. The time they spent separated allowed each of them to grow and learn more about themselves and what it takes to make a relationship work. When they got back together, their relationship and communication were stronger, Marissa says.

The proposal happened in 2021 while the two were on vacation in Florida. Shane took Marissa by complete sur prise when he proposed on a beach after dinner. “He had convinced me that he was not proposing,” she says. The celebration that night continued when friends showed up and surprised Marissa. When they returned from Florida, Marissa hit the ground running with wedding planning. She knew she wanted to plan the wedding of her dreams.

One thing that never popped into her dreams was rain on the big day. Yet, that’s what happened. The couple woke up to rain on the morning of the wedding, but they didn’t let the showers stop the festivities. At 6 a.m. that day, Marissa and Shane made their way to Kingdom Co ee. With the wedding occurring in their Anglican church, this gave them the opportunity to read their non-traditional vows to each other at sunrise.

The ceremony was everything the couple wanted their wedding to be. When Marissa walked down the aisle, the atmosphere was nothing short of romantic. “Even though the church was full of people, it felt so intimate,” Marissa says. Between the ceremony and reception, Marissa and Shane ran home to change their out ts. Marissa wore her second dress of the day, and the shirt Shane wore was one hand-picked by Marissa. The day was lled with elements as unique as the couple and with memories they love to look back on. —Michelle Lewis

LOVE IS IN THE AIR: 1. The couple created his and her cocktails to enjoy at the reception. 2. The perfume Marissa wore the day of the wedding was one she bought locally on a family trip. 3. Reading vows to each other at sunrise calmed Marissa and Shane’s nerves and gave them time to relax with each other before the wedding. 4. Getting married in their church made the wedding more personal to the couple. The entire day was filled with love and smiles.

1. While the couple did not do a first look with each other, Marissa did do a first look with the groomsmen. Over the course of their relation ship she had become very close with Shane’s friends and this gave them a special moment together. 2. Marissa’s bridesmaids wore jumpsuits instead of dresses. They allowed the women to be comfortable the entire day, and each one had a customizable top so the girls could showcase their personalities. 3. With the timeline of the day, the couple decided to have grazing tables so guests could make it through the day without being hungry.
