Get Out There How I Spring Break While most families head south for warm weather on spring break, our family loads up the car and heads west to the mountains. This is our sixth year skiing in Colorado. We go with another family, and with five kids between us we’ve lived through concussions, strep throat, meltdowns on the mountain (well that was really more on the adults) and car sickness. Each year we wonder whose turn it is to have an ailment, and last year, I was the lucky one! Altitude sickness led to me schlepping an oxygen tank across the resort while sporting a nasal cannula. The photos are great blackmail. The memories and laughs make it all worth it.

The one year we didn’t go over spring break was March of . We opted to ski over Christmas that year. So for spring break I booked a cozy little cabin in Ponca, Arkansas for the weekend. We were all set to leave that morning when decided needed to first call an all-team meeting where I explained that we had to shut down the o ce and everyone needed to go home

for what we hoped would be just a couple of weeks. It was with a sense of dread, doom and fear that our family drove to our little cabin that ended up having no cell service. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that we were completely out of touch with reality. We spent the weekend hiking and exploring waterfalls including Eden Falls, the one featured on p. 71. Getting outside and face-to-face with these beautiful natural resources was grounding and reassuring in a time of such uncertainty.

Must Do It We loved Eden Falls, and if you go, you have to do the crazy climb behind the waterfall into the cave. Bring a ashlight and ust trust me. We were lucky to run into a group of people who had maneuvered it before and helped guide us in. You feel like you should definitely not be attempting it, but I promise, attempt it!

n the days leading up to me writing this note, two things have happened simultaneously. 1. I’ve been wrapping up writing this month’s cover story, “Guide to Waterfalls.” 2. I’ve been planning a couple of family trips that will ultimately take us through four national parks. We bought the America the Beautiful pass and plan to see more purple mountain’s majesty and amber waves of grain than I ever thought I’d absorb in one year. It’s an understatement to say that my mind is currently filled to the brim with images of natural beauty that have, at times, literally taken my breath away (and I’m just looking at pictures on the computer at this point!). Thinking about bringing my kids to places so grand and beautiful is a physically heart-wrenching feeling —in a good way, of course. And planning to make it happen is really time-consuming. When I took the StrengthsFinder quiz, one of my strengths was Input. This means I have a natural craving to know more, and more, and more. To collect, organize and save information. The quiz results suggested that I look for jobs that require me to acquire new information every day—such as journalism. Lucky for me, I was well into my journalism career when I learned this about myself. Practically, this means I have trouble stopping once I start to dig into a subject. That’s the point where the strength becomes a weakness. I found a whole lot more than the 10 waterfalls featured in this issue, and narrowing it down was hard, like raising a plant just to throw it in the trash.

But everything’s better when it’s edited, right? It also means that almost every second of my time not spent working and parenting lately has been spent studying National Park maps and curating extensive, deeply researched and embarrassingly thorough trip plans and itineraries. And I can’t stop. Do you want to know the coolest thing I found while researching our National Parks vacation? At one point, I was debating whether to plan some time to putz around on a mountain lake. But I looked at pictures of that particular lake and thought, “Actually, Table Rock is prettier.” And it’s right in my backyard. In your backyard. So as I was singing the praises of America’s natural wonders, I was reminded of how much beauty we have right here in the Ozarks. This month’s cover story has the same effect.

It’s time for residents of Republic (and anybody within day trip distance) to get excited. A new $65 million mixeduse development called the Iron Grain District is in the works. This development from Magers Construction and H Design Group will be home to more than 200 apartments, dining, shopping, entertainment, a dog park and walking trails—all within walking distance of one another. It will be situated at one of Republic’s most hopping new areas, near the new Amazon warehouse and Convoy of Hope. The first phase of the development will include 24,000 square feet of shopping center space.

Here Come the Birds

petite, bright blue feathered, orange breasted beauty is a symbol for the Show Me State, and it’s also a bird feeder visitor who’s a lot of fun to spot. They are looking for new nesting spots in early March so they can settle down to spend the summer with us, and that means this is the perfect time to start attracting these little critters to your yard. There are a few things you can do to make your space appealing. First, keep the right food on hand. They love to eat insects and fruit, and they don’t care at all about the seeds you might be putting put. So add some mealworms to your rotation. Suet blocks that have fruit and insects in them are great for satisfying bluebird appetites too. Secondly, make or buy a bird house that’s specially designed for bluebirds. It needs to have a small entrance hole (about an inch and a half) that’s at least six inches above the box oor. A sloped roof is handy to keep predators away. Mount it high on a pole in a sunny and open space, so the birds can perch and look for insects to hunt. Happy birding, 417-land!

[Q&A]

We sat down with local artist Meg Wagler to learn about her latest eye-catching mural, dive into her creative process and discuss the future of public art in 417-land. BY COLIN SHEA DENNISTON

eg Wagler describes herself as a solopreneur. “It’s way more accurate I feel like than entrepreneur,” says Wagler, “because I’m not working with a brick and mortar shop and hiring a lot of employees and things like that, so it’s a little bit different of a landscape.” Expanding public art has been one of Wagler’s primary focuses, and last year she was approached by the Oasis Hotel and Convention Center and Revel Advertising to take on her biggest project yet. In conjunction with their site-wide renovations, Wagler was hired to create a towering poolside mural where color takes center stage. A A INE • 417MAG.COM

417 Magazine: Ho man di erent co ors ere used on that mural? MW: think it was around 3 different colors. This was actually the first pro ect did that was all spray, like spray cans. A lot of times I’ll mix or use different materials, but this whole piece was cans. 417 Magazine: What were some of the ways that you went about tackling such a large-scale project? MW: Since this was my largest project to date, I just broke it up into chunks basically. I use a technique called the doodle grid, which takes a little bit longer than using a projector. It looks like gra ti scribble all over the wall with little shapes and Xs and hearts and Os and then I take a photo of that and overlay it with my design so then I can sketch it in as I go. 417 Magazine: What were some of the challenges that you faced with this project? MW: Because it was a pool area, the surface is not even. So it was actually really di cult to get the right size lift in there that we needed. I had to be very careful and very alert so I didn’t fall into the pool and make sure the lift didn’t dip into the grates or holes for drainage or anything like that.

417 Magazine: How do you feel public art like t is enefits t e comm nit MW: As far as talent acquisition or talent retention, from an economic standpoint, it’s economically beneficial to have e periences like this so that people want to stay and feel excited and safe and be able to walk around the downtown area for example. From an artistic standpoint, the more that we build up the presence of public art, the more momentum that we gain as an arts community for grant funding and recruiting different ideas and folks who really have an innovative thumb and want to utilize the landscape 417 has, to build some of these ideas and opportunities. 417 Magazine: So obviously you’ve been hard at work on this mural and then there is your project MIDxMIDWST, which is coming later this year. What are your thoughts on public art specifica in and MW: Ultimately the goal is more quality, public art and doing it in a way that excites and involves the community... All of those things add up to people just loving the 417 area and staying here and being proud of showing it off to other people.

STRESSING THE LITTLE THINGS Springfield mom Sarah Williams reflects on the things that have made her worry over the years—and how they have turned out in the end. BY SARAH WILLIAMS

y friend from high school called me, frantic about a discipline issue he was having with his kindergartner. I talked him off the ledge, knowing how difficult some stages of parenting are.

In a follow-up conversation a few months later, that sweet little girl was doing just fine. And my friend told me, “I feel bad that I even stressed about it.” To which I replied, “That will be the title of my parenting memoir.” The amount of things I’ve worried about that I did not need to worry about is immeasurable. Especially with my first-born child, when every stage is new and terrifying. My oldest son once got his front tooth knocked out, thanks to his younger brother head butting him. I lost sleep over that snaggle tooth, and one day, the new tooth grew in perfectly fine. He was the shyest little kid and would hide behind me at every social function. Convinced other moms were silently judging me for this, I tried every form of bribery to make him bolder. A decade later, with more confidence than I will ever have, he asked the sweetest girl to homecoming and had the best time. Awkward stages. Weird habits. Sleep deprivation. Potty training woes. Hygiene. Friendships. Lack thereof. Sports teams. Birthday parties. School choices. If it’s

possible to stress about it, I’ve stressed about it. And then some. Yet life has a funny way of working out just fine. And usually it’s even better than expected even when it’s unexpected. Hygiene issues are miraculously cured when a cute girl captures his attention. Friends come and go, and some stay a long time. It’s all part of life. All kids eventually sleep. And discover what they love. And pee in the toilet. (Well, near-ish the toilet in my house.) I tell myself that, if all of those years ago, I had a glimpse of the people my children would become, I would have relaxed and enjoyed the ride a lot more. But now I am worried about college and future careers and if I’ve adequately prepared my offspring to be contributing members of society. I lose sleep wondering if there’s any correlation between barely passing algebra and career success later in life. So in a decade or two, I am sure I will find myself saying, “I feel bad that I even stressed about it,” when my children are amazing adults with good jobs, and their own kids to worry about—and they call me frantically asking for advice on how to calm a colicky baby. At that point, I will worry about whether or not my children are getting enough sleep (again) and making enough money and investing in their marriages. And anything else I can think of, I’m sure. They will always be my children. It will always be my job to stress. Even though I know I shouldn’t. Because life has a funny way of turning out just fine. It seems as if that parenting memoir is going to write itself.

While You’re There: You need to buy a ticket to Silver Dollar City to get into this cave. Make good use of it and spend the rest of the day in the park, riding roller coasters, shopping and eating a steaming hot bowl of succotash.

3 hours south of Springfield in Blanchard Springs Recreation Area in Mountain View, Arkansas

BALANCED ROCK FALLS 2 hours south of Springﬁeld near Ponca, Arkansas

he 1-mile out-and-back trail that leads to Balanced Rock Falls starts at the Ponca Low Water Bridge that crosses Buffalo National River. But it’s unmarked and can be tricky to find. Look for the sign that indicates the Buffalo River Trailhead—but instead of setting off on that trail, take the smaller path in between it and the sign. Once you’re on the path, you’ll follow along scenic and rocky Leatherwood Creek with its numerous small falls. Don’t miss the spur on the left side that leads up to Balanced Rock Falls. The namesake boulder is a sight to see, but don’t stop there. Scramble up above it to see even more falls as they tumble down the hillside over stair-stepped rocks.

1.5 hours west of Springfield in Joplin

t only 12 feet tall, Grand Falls might not sound particularly grand, but it is. That’s because it’s the widest continuously flowing waterfall in the state of Missouri—163 feet wide, in fact. The falls are just below a man-made dam on Shoal Creek, but that doesn’t make their lazy-afternoon, scenic river vibe any less wonderful. Stake out a spot under the trees to wade when you need a bit of shade, and venture out onto the rocks closer to the falls and the chert ledge they pour over when you’re ready to scramble around and explore. This is an easy-to-access (just steps from the parking area), picnic-perfect spot that makes a great no-stress day trip. DIFFICULTY

GRAND FALLS

TWIN FALLS 2.75 hours south of Springfield near Sand Gap, Arkansas

he 2.8-mile trek to Twin Falls can be a little bit tough, but the payoff is worth it. Here, you get two waterfalls for the price of one, as Big Devil’s Fork and Long Devil’s Fork both cascade into the same pool of turquoise water that’s perfect for wading. Plus, big boulders in the water below Twin Falls add to the unique look of this scenic spot. It’s a great place to relax and listen to the rippling water of the falls while you enjoy the canopy of the woods around you. Just make sure you save some energy for the walk back to your car!

2.75 hours southwest of Springfield at Devil’s Den State Park near Winslow, Arkansas

HEMMED IN HOLLOW 1 hour and 45 minutes south of Springfield on Hemmed In Hollow Trail near Compton, Arkansas

et’s not bury the headline: This popular Ozarks waterfall is notably the tallest one between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. At 210 feet tall, it pours down a sheer sandstone bluff to a pool below. Make sure you visit during the wet season or after a good, heavy rain for the best effect. (Otherwise, you might see a trickle.) Find this fall at the end of a 5.7-mile out-and-back trail starting from Compton Trailhead that can be steep and challenging—but is totally worth it!

ost Valley is a 2.3-mile out-and-back trail that’s fairly flat most of the way, ending in a bit of a climb for the last leg. Toward the end, you’ll come across the reason you came here: Eden Falls. The 53-foot waterfall ranges from a trickle on dry days to a full (albeit narrow) fall during wet weather. You can take in the falls from below then head back, or you can continue up that steeper path to the mouth of a cave. There you can pull out a flashlight and venture in to see the falls from a new view.

hen someone mentions the word barbecue, the last thing that comes to my mind would be wings. Not that they are bad, but they just wouldn’t be first in my mental list. To be honest, I don’t normally order wings from barbecue restaurants because they just seem inferior to a tender pulled pork sandwich. After my visit to Missouri Mike’s, that opinion just isn’t the case anymore. Their 2021 Wingapalooza People’s Choice Winner wings are the perfect appetizer to start your meal. With four sauces to choose from, I made sure to try three of them, with the teriyaki being my favorite. It has the perfect heat without making you sweat. Not to mention they have the most satisfying crispy skin and tender smoked meat. Looking at the menu to order the entree, I was a little overwhelmed because I wasn’t sure what I was hungry for. I just knew that I could count on Greg and Jeremy, our servers, to help me land on something mouthwatering. When it was time to decide between The Kelsey (a quarter pound beef patty topped with fire-roasted hatch green chile cheese, caramelized onions and chorizo) and That Effing Burrito Thing, I went with the latter. Mainly because I wanted to see how the dish got its name. This 14-inch tortilla-wrapped burrito was stuffed with their house-smoked

brisket and mac and cheese. It definitely held up to its name and was surprisingly easy to devour. Although the burrito was tasty alone, I added their sweet barbecue sauce to make it even better. If you want leftovers for days or you have a massive appetite, this is the dish for you. I am a sucker for side dishes, so I also made sure to order both slaw and beans. I can honestly say that Missouri Mike’s pit beans have a unique flavor unlike any that I have had before. They had a hint of cinnamon-making them taste more on the lighter side while maintaining that punch of flavor. With eyes bigger than my belly, I ordered dessert—all of which are made fresh by a now local baker who is a former New Yorker. If I could have ordered one of everything, I would have. With a rotating menu of sweets, their cannoli creamcake is one to get your hands on! If they are all sold out, you can’t go wrong with a slice of their blueberry cheesecake. It was the perfect way to end such a filling meal. Missouri Mike’s has a really nice variety to choose from on their menu. From crispy fried tofu to The Lyndsey smash burger, you will leave well-fed and planning your next visit. You really can’t go wrong when at this friendly restaurant, and I will definitely be back to get more of those wings.

here are two kinds of diners: The ones who gravitate toward a restaurant’s signature dishes because if it’s a diner fave it must be good. And there are those who ignore them in favor of finding that one, weird, perfect, fun surprise on the menu. I’m the latter most of the time, but I might throw that tendency out the window at The Finley (206 E. Elm St., Ozark, 417-582-1912) because their Signature Crab Bisque has all the makings of a mouthwatering meal. It features blue crab meat in a thick soup that’s topped with cream and madeira wine. he Moscow mule is a great cocktail on its own (vodka, ginger beer, lime juice), but the real fun comes when bars and restaurants put their own spins on the drink. A base as simple as a mule’s leaves lots of room for having fun, and Farmers Gastropub (2620 S. Glenstone Ave., Springfield) is great at it. We’ve seen lots of mule iterations on their menu,
