THE PLAN TIPS
GIMLETS ON THE GO Mobile bars like The Traveling Tin Co. bring customized bar service to special events.
MOBILE MIXOLOGY Looking for a way to make your wedding different and unique to you? Replace the traditional permanent bar with a custom bar service on the go! BY JENNA MURRAY & JORDAN BLOMQUIST
M
obile bars have become super popular in recent years. After all, what’s cuter than a little trailer doling out custom cocktails to fit the aesthetic of your day? Here are three to try.
Party Party Co. 417-693-0827; partypartyco.com Pro Tip: Owner Laura Head Elliott says many couples focus on creating something that all their guests will enjoy. “Pick the things that you love—the flavors that you love,” she suggests instead. Be Sure To Avoid: “Less is more,” Elliot says. When it comes to the amount of drinks or ingredients included in the recipe, a simplified menu works best. Find Your Style: Party Party Co. hosts a tasting event for couples to create the perfect signature cocktails or mocktails for their wedding. “The couple is able to taste the drinks, see the drinks, see the garnishes, and then they can hone in on what is going to be their favorite,” she says.
Happy Nomads Mobile Bar Co.
The Traveling Tin Co.
417-233-1393, happynomadsbar.com Pro Tip: “Keep [the menu] simple. It’s going to save on your overhead costs, it’ll be easier for your guests to decide and keep the lines down, and it’s usually a little less chaotic behind the bar and things can be set up prettier,” owner Lauren Moss says. Be Sure To Avoid: Don’t try to please everybody. Moss suggests not stressing about planning around all the guests’ likes and dislikes. “Everybody’s going to be happy no matter what because they’re at your wedding,” she says. Find Your Style: The menu is entirely customizable. Moss says they create custom framed menus, with the option of traditional drink names, the couple’s names, their pets’ names or whatever they would like. “We’ll send over a questionnaire, get a feel for what you're looking for, then we always chat with you about what’s important to you,” she says.
417-830-8860, thetravelingtinco.com Pro Tip: Owner Amanda Stowell considers the design and style of the wedding and starts with one favorite type of spirit to base the menu off of. “Think about if there’s anything you had on vacation that you loved, or something that reminds you of a good memory or a good time,” she says. Be Sure To Avoid: Don’t forget to consider the nonalcoholic drink menu too. That should include water and soft drinks but could also be a unique mocktails menu. Find Your Style: Stowell says they build off what the couple already has in mind. She is always looking for new recipes to suggest to clients, often based on the couple’s tastes, the style of the wedding and what season the wedding will take place in. “We’ll just look for fresh ideas, something that we think is good,” she says. 417mag.com | 417 BRIDE | 15

LOVE NOTES BY KALI SALAZAR
DOUBLE THE LOVE “The truly special thing about our wedding was that we actually got married twice. Our wedding was planned and ready to go for the summer of 2020, but our plans got derailed due to the pandemic. After a lot of thought and consideration, we decided to postpone the large gathering that we had dreamed of. On our one-year anniversary in 2021, we were able to safely have our ceremony and reception with all of our friends, family and out-of-town loved ones. We always say COVID-19 didn’t get us down. We got the best of both worlds: a small, intimate backyard wedding and a big party!”—Alexa & Dustin, learn more about their big day on p. 66

MAKE IT COUNT
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
“Make personal decisions on your wedding day and surround yourself only with those that support that. Choose to include things that are your style and your spouse’s style whether they are cliche or original. You won't regret catering your day to your personal style. If you have vendors you are familiar with, support them where you can and your day will feel more personal. My top things I’m glad we didn't skip: stellar photographer choices, a second shooter to capture all the moments and the photo booth.”—Sara & Musa, learn more about their big day on p. 56
y favorite thing about our big day was our first dance. ur first dance song was ‘Lucky’ by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. We picked this song because it was one of our favorite songs to listen to at the beginning of our relationship because we were lucky to have each other as our best friend. really wanted our first dance to be outside and we planned on doing it after dinner. We added string lights on the patio, we had the view of the lake, and we were under the stars. At the beginning of the song, it goes ‘across the water, across the deep blue ocean under the open sky. t was a dream fter we had our first dances we had a beautiful display of fireworks. —Brooke & Jacob, learn more about their big day on p. 64

A
wedding dress can be special to a bride, but if cared for and kept for generations it can represent a long-lasting love for multiple brides. Jennifer Elswick’s family has kept an heirloom wedding dress, which has lasted for three generations of brides who chose to wear it. The dress was originally purchased at Netter’s, which was a store housed in the Heer’s building in downtown Springfield. It was intended for Jennifer’s mother, Betty Embrey, and her sister Peggy in 1961 for back-to-back weddings. “I got married in January of 1962, and (Peggy) planned a wedding in April of 1962,” Betty says. “We purchased the gown for a little over $50. We shared the expense, and we had shared almost everything our entire lives, so it was nice we were able to share the wedding gown too.” But the dress had a longer life than originally planned on, and ended up lasting for a total of eight brides. The dress was worn by Jennifer’s sisters Charlotte and Julie, her cousins Melanie and Terry, Jennifer herself, and then Melody, Jennifer’s oldest daughter.
Few alterations have been made for the dress, besides size adjustments, with the exception of Jennifer’s sister adding a longer train. Jennifer says the dress was no longer as white, so the color of the train had to match and be stained. She remembers her parents sitting in the kitchen, tea-staining it. Other than that, Jennifer says the style of the dress has stood the test of time. “My daughter and I went looking for a veil,” she says. “A lot of dresses in the shop were not ‘whitewhite’ either. So it has stood the test of time.” Jennifer says her aunt, who is in charge of preserving the dress, has kept the dress in a suitcase all these years to keep it from getting damaged. But the dress is more than likely going into retirement now. Jennifer says it can no longer be sent to the cleaners because of how old the fabric is. It required an air cleaning for Melody and was too fragile for a regular dry cleaning. “I can’t imagine it making it to the next generation,” Jennifer says, pointing out that the next family members to get married are only 4 years old or younger today. Wearing the dress through the generations wasn’t exactly planned. Betty says she wanted her daughters
to have the wedding dress of their dreams. Charlotte, Betty’s oldest daughter, was the one who started the family trend by making the choice to wear it to her wedding. “She kind of surprised me, but I was very pleased of course when she told me she wanted to wear my dress. I never really encouraged it, but she made the choice.” The dress isn’t the only thing that’s stood the test of time. Betty and Peggy wore a string of white pearls that have now been worn by Betty's daughters and granddaughter Melody. Plus, the most important things that have lasted are the marriages themselves. All the women in the family that have worn the dress have been married a total of 302 years. In regards to the dress, Jennifer says wearing it just seemed like a tradition that was worthwhile to carry on. “I never considered wearing anything else,” Jennifer says. “That was one of the most important things to me at my wedding, that I was going to be in that dress. Those of us coming later in the line of people, we never really considered anything else.” 417mag.com | 417 BRIDE | 19

and excitement Annie and Hunter felt about spending forever together. Annie and Hunter have always been more of a private couple, and they wanted to make sure they saved some time for just them on their wedding day. To make this day special for them personally, they did a first look and private vows before their ceremony. Annie also knew she wanted to do something special with her mom, so she planned a mother-daughter dance as a part of their reception. To end the night, Annie and Hunter had a private last dance before their send-off. Annie says they were able to have some time alone together, and the feelings of the day really sunk in. Annie says she is still so grateful to do life with Hunter because they have fun together, they’ve been best friends for so long and they’ve really learned how to work well together in their marriage.—Kali Salazar

unter and Annie met in high school on a church trip when they sat next to each other on the bus. Annie was very shy, but Hunter was outgoing and ended up getting her number before the trip was over. Since that bus ride, they have talked every single day. Annie says that meeting so young came with its own set of challenges, but that in their five years of dating Hunter has helped her through severe health issues and family difficulties and has continued to brighten her day and make her laugh through it all. Annie says that she knew he was the one she could spend the rest of her life with. When it came to the proposal, Annie was completely surprised. Hunter had told her they were meeting friends for dinner, but he led her to a spot by the lake where he got down on one knee and proposed. Shortly after, it started pouring rain, but that didn’t dampen the happiness

eg and Michael met in college at Drury University during the end of Meg’s senior year. Meg thought Michael was cute and loved his sarcastic humor similar to her own, but she was planning to move to Florida and didn’t want to start a new relationship. Michael turned out to be good friends with the boyfriend of Meg’s roommate, so they saw each other a lot that summer. The night before Meg flew to Miami, Michael drove to her house with Andy’s and told her he couldn’t let her leave without expressing how he felt and trying long distance dating. Meg didn’t think it made logical sense, but she followed her heart and the rest is history. They’ve now been together for seven years and have a beautiful daughter. When it came to the proposal, Michael had to get creative as they had just had their daughter Lucy in December of 2019 and a few months later were placed in lockdown due 52 | 417 BRIDE | 417mag.com
to COVID-19. He planned a weekend away in mid-September with Meg to Northwest Arkansas. During the getaway, Michael and Meg walked down to the dock to kayak and he got down on one knee and popped the question. Meg and Michael wanted to incorporate as much of the Ozarks as they could into their wedding since they both grew up here. They chose to have their wedding festivities at The Workshop at Finley Farms because they saw it as a true Ozarks landmark. Meg also wanted to incorporate her Filipino heritage into the wedding and did so by gifting her bridal party woven mahogany hand fans and by wearing a blue topaz ring from her great great grandmother. Meg and Michael's favorite moment from their wedding day was when it was them and Lucy on the dance floor for a few special songs together. Meg says, “I look at those pictures often and I smile big every time.”—Kali Salazar

and a few happy tears later, our friends and family came running out of the trees to celebrate with us. Once the wedding planning officially began, we knew we wanted everything to feel very intentional and to be focused on the love we’ve shared for so many years. That intentionality looked like having a wedding dress with sleeves my mom made and sewed on from scratch, creating a bouquet for the reception entryway that had one flower from every bouquet Cameron had ever gotten me, writing and reading our own vows in front of all the people we love, putting baby’s breath in my hair from the first set of flowers I ever got from him, designing each piece of wedding stationery myself and having a seating chart I painted with all our loved ones’ names on it in my handwriting. Our wedding day felt beautiful, magical and so much more peaceful than I could’ve ever hoped for. We ended the night just the two of us under the stars for a private last dance before our send-off. In the months since, I’ve been asked if I would go back and change anything about our day. Each time I reply with, “No, it was absolutely perfect.”—Kali Salazar

y husband and I met in September of 2014 on the first day of seventh grade. I remember walking in and seeing him smile and that’s all it took for me to be head over heels starstruck. Even at 14 years old, I knew he was the one for me. Unfortunately, it took him a whole year to come to the same realization. Boys, right? Ever since middle school, we’ve been the best of friends and have walked with each other through thick and thin. I mean, if we could survive our awkward middle school dating phase, we can do anything. It was such a gift to get to grow up with my future husband and to graduate middle school, high school and recently college together. We already have what feels like a lifetime of memories. Because we’d been dating for almost seven years by the time we got engaged, Cameron knew the proposal would have to be something special. He tricked me into dressing up and going to Fellow’s Lake for a photo shoot. Next thing I knew, I was walking up to a beautiful setup of photos of us over the years, flowers from all the bouquets he’s gotten me since we started dating and our song playing in the distance. After he popped the question

The ceremony entrance piece is an antique gold mirror that has been in Kali’s family for years. The inscription is in her handwriting. 3. The couple takes a moment to celebrate with their friends during their bridal party photos. The bridal party is also the group who sang and played instruments for live music during the ceremony. 4. From personalized perfume and cologne bottles to stationery hand-designed by the bride, each detail is intentionally planned and executed by the couple. The bride’s ring is custom-designed by the groom from Staghead Designs and the groom’s ring contains a guitar string around it to symbolize his deep love for music.

THE DETAILS: 1. Each bridesmaid’s dress color was intentionally chosen by Kali to represent their warm personalities. 2. The charcuterie table features homemade bread, pepperoni roses, caprese skewers with balsamic drizzle and more delicious treats, all made by the groom’s family. 3. Guests are welcomed with hand-designed centerpieces and placecards made by the bride. The first thing they see as they enter the reception is a bouquet made from flowers Cameron had given Kali over the years.

REAL WEDDINGS JACOB AND BROOKE
B
rooke and Jacob met in 2018 at Ocean Zen one December evening. Brooke’s college roommate and her boyfriend, Christian, had asked Brooke to join them for dinner. As fate would have it, Jacob had been good friends with Christian in high school, so he came over to their table to say hello. After Brooke and Jacob sheepishly made eye contact from across the restaurant during dinner, Brooke’s friends invited Jacob to go to a bar downtown with them. “He walked through the doors into the bar, and we both locked eyes on each other,” says Brooke. “It was such a different but nice feeling.” Brooke says she knew he was the one from the night they met, so they decided to date long-distance for a year and a half during college. Four years later, Jacob popped the question at The Worman House Bistro in front of the beautiful fountain overlooking Table Rock Lake. Both of their families 64 | 417 BRIDE | 417mag.com
were there to celebrate the sweet occasion. As they began wedding planning, Brooke and Jacob had several ideas they knew they wanted to incorporate into their special day. They chose to hang pictures of each of their parents and grandparents in the entryway of the chapel with an inscription that read, “Generations of Love. All that we are and all that we hope to be we owe to our loving families.” Brooke included her late grandmother in the wedding by wrapping her bouquet in lace from her grandmother's wedding dress. The wedding had many unique aspects, but one that stands out the most is Jacob’s ring that he designed himself to match Brooke’s eye color. The couple’s favorite part of their wedding day was their first dance outside under the twinkle lights followed by a beautiful fireworks display. Sparks really were flying at the Ruder wedding!—Kali Salazar

The elegant invitations feature the chapel and Brooke’s bouquet watercolored on the envelopes to add a sweet touch to the couple’s day. 3. Brooke and Jacob showcase their last name in a big display of illuminated letters at their reception and follow dinner by dancing to “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat under the stars. 4. The bridal party keeps it classy in all black dresses and suits with pops of pink in their bouquets and boutonnieres. Brooke’s bouquet is held together by lace from her late grandmother’s wedding dress to include her in their special day.

REAL WEDDINGS DUSTIN AND ALEXA
Dustin Duckworth & Alexa Snodgrass
66 | 417 BRIDE | 417mag.com
Alexa was ecstatic and they began planning their August wedding. Alexa wanted her wedding to feel personal and intentional even if the guests didn’t notice all the details. To accomplish this, Alexa had her mother watercolor all her signage and she chose her brother to officiate the wedding. She also created signature cocktails for her and Dustin for the reception and gave coffee beans from Mudhouse as party favors to guests in honor of their first date location. The couple wanted to incorporate Bumble into their wedding day for bringing them together, so they had a bee charm sewn onto the back of Dustin’s tie and on the inside of Alexa’s dress. Because the couple’s original wedding date was canceled due to COVID-19, their second wedding with all their friends and family was very special to them. Alexa says, “We got the best of both worlds—a small, intimate backyard wedding and a big party!” The couple’s wedding hashtag perfectly sums up their special day, #ThanksForSwipingRight.—Kali Salazar
Olive View Events
OH, HONEY Bees are subtly featured throughout Dustin and Alexa’s wedding day. After meeting on Bumble, they knew they would want to commemorate the app that brought them together in some way. They do this by setting bee plates on their head table and sewing bee charms into Alexa’s dress and Dustin’s tie.

A
s working professionals, both Alexa and Dustin struggled to find time to go out and meet new people. They each decided to give Bumble a try and see if it led to anything. When they first matched on the dating app, Alexa thought Dustin looked “too good to be true,” but after he extended their match so it wouldn’t expire, Alexa knew she had to see what he was all about. They began texting and shortly after, they met at Mudhouse and Alexa says, “The rest is history.” Each year, they still go back to the same spot at Mudhouse to celebrate the anniversary of their first date. Dustin decided to surprise Alexa with a proposal during what she thought were just family photos that fall. Dustin had prearranged the surprise with the photographer, Alexa’s parents and her son. The moment didn’t seem right until the very end of the photos when Dustin had been on one knee for a previous pose, and he pulled the ring out of his pocket and said, “Can you hold this for me?”

SWEET MOMENTS: 1. Alexa’s stunning silver jewelry is the perfect addition to the soft colors and details at their second wedding. The sparkling silver against the blue and pink create a beautiful contrast that feels like royalty. 2. The couple makes a grand exit from their first wedding ceremony in their car decorated with a white banner announcing “Just Married.” 3. After their original wedding date was cancelled due to COVID-19, the couple beams with joy at getting to gather with all their friends and family at their second ceremony. 4. The elegant white cake boasts a large silky pink bow to add the perfect finishing touch to the colorful desserts from Sugar Leaf Bakery at the couple’s second reception.
