Geology alumni and friends triple giving day goal

Field trips have long been an integral part to the experience of students in the Geology & Geological Engineering department. Thanks to some impressive alumni generosity, these important tours of regional geology are sure to continue.

According to Dr. Kevin Ward, Assistant Professor of Geology, getting outside and exploring the land is an important and valuable part of being a geologist that doesn’t happen as much as it used to. “There’s been quite a bit of a shift in the field,” he said. “It used to be that we would go out and hike around and look at rocks all day, but now we’ve become

George and his wife, Nancy (EE 57) went on to be very successful, opening a consulting engineering firm, Dunham Associates, in Rapid City which eventually had offices in Bismarck, ND, Sioux Falls, SD, Minneapolis, MN, Casper, WY, Reno, NV, and Las Vegas, NV. The couple supported more than Mines. They provided financial support to the Rapid City Club for Boys, the YMCA, Monument Health, and United Way among others. In 2004, the field at O’Harra Stadium was named in honor of George and Nancy, and has since been known as Dunham Field at O’Harra Stadium. “George wanted to see a winning program, but more importantly he wanted student-athletes to get a great education, and he really believed in the education here,” Maria said. “He also wanted to give kids the same opportunities he had.” Scholarship support is usually the number one tool for recruiting talented student-athletes,

He was going to make sure you were successful.” That’s why, when Jack was approached to help raise money for the Stensaas Laboratory Endowment, his choice was easy. “Plus, I sold for 30 years, so I figured I could convince my classmates to give up a little coin for the School of Mines.” The family of Elden Stensaas, along with friends and alumni, generously funded a laboratory endowment for the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1997. The endowment has allowed the lab equipment to stay up to date, ensuring Mines students receive the best E.R. Stensaas

Mines Advancement Fund Together, our donations create a brighter future for Hardrockers. Did you know that financial need is the number one reason a student turns down admission to Mines? Gifts to the Mines Advancement Fund allow us to increase the number of scholarships, add new equipment and technology to labs, send students to life-changing field trips and conferences, expand and renovate our facilities, and more.
