Shopping for your wedding apparel is exciting, and may even be overwhelming at times. But with the right direction, you will find the perfect wedding gown with ease and confidence. Whatever your style, there is a dress out there waiting for you. When to Start Begin the search for your gown, accessories, and jewelry up to nine months before the wedding day to give ample time to avoid rush-order fees. Some dress designers require six months to produce a gown; others may be longer or even quicker so be sure to ask. Order early to allow sufficient time for your gown to be received, altered, and steamed. Do Your Research What style of dress have you always dreamt of going down the aisle in? APPAREL Alterations The bridal salon will take your measurements before ordering your dress. Order the size you are on the day you order—not the size you hope to be. It is easier to make a dress smaller than bigger. To achieve a perfect fit, your dress will likely need minor alterations, which is best done by a professional seamstress. Understand the special order policy of the bridal salon. In most cases, when you order your dress, it is a final sale. Preserve Your Gown Keeping your dress in good condition for years to come involves hiring a professional to clean and preserve it. This prevents yellowing, reduces the risk of mold and mildew, and protects the gown from light and dust. Your gown will be cleaned to such a degree that even the smallest
invisible stain is removed. Preservation also helps the dress retain its shape and keeps embellishments affixed to it. Certain elements react with the dry cleaning solvent so tell the cleaners if your dress was exposed to anything unusual. Five Gown Silhouettes When you start looking for a wedding dress, you may discover the vocabulary is a little overwhelming. There are many different options to choose from. If you feel a bit confused become familiar with these terms you’ll hear in the bridal salon. The silhouette of a wedding dress refers to its overall shape and can be thought of in five basic categories. Naturally, your style choice will be based on your body shape—and the parts you want to accentuate will ultimately determine what style you choose. A-line: This style has a fitted bodice that gradually tapers into a wider, more flared skirt. This look highlights the narrowness of the midsection and floats away from the hips and thighs. It is designed to flatter nearly all body types. Ball Gown: This dress is the traditional Cinderella dress. This look will have a fitted bodice that flares to a full skirt. Ball gown dresses are appropriate for formal weddings and look great on women with pear-shaped bodies. Dreaming of a princess wedding? This is the look for you! Empire Waist: These dresses have a fitted bodice that ends just below the bust and free flowing skirts that help lengthen the body’s appearance. If you want to elongate your torso this is the style for you! Mermaid: A trumpet-style dress that has a very fitted bodice then just above the knee, flares out like a tail of a mermaid into a dramatic train. This mermaid wedding dress style is ideal for brides who want to emphasize their curves. Sheath: These sleek and sophisticated column dresses are form-fitting from top to bottom and have no waist. The style either hugs the natural curves of the body, or falls in a straight line from the shoulders to the hemline. If you are going for a romantic look and want to accentuate your natural curves, this is a great option for you! O

Introduction to the Four Cs Cut: When a diamond is transformed from rough to dazzling gem, it is cut with facets, which are different shaped and sized areas on the diamond’s surface. Each facet is positioned and polished to create the angles that best allow light to enter and reflect back out of the stone. More and more grooms are stepping onto the “wedding planning” field and getting into the game. Research shows most couples now tackle the arrangements for the big day jointly; after all it’s a big day for both the bride and the groom.

booking the wedding transportation. There are plenty of other elements of the wedding you may be up for, so be sure to communicate with your bride. Call time out and evaluate your game plan. That way there will be plenty of time for alterations. Schedule a fitting one week before the wedding for any last minute adjustments. How can I stand out? Set yourself apart with a different vest and tie color. Make sure to coordinate the vest and tie colors with the bridesmaids’ dresses. What if I am not a tux kind of guy? No problem. Your local shop will have an abundance of options from pants to suspenders, to bow ties. They are sure to have the exact look you want! Remember to recognize the importance of the day, talk with your fiancé, and know that there are options to fit your style. O
Groom’s Dinner After your ceremony “practice session” (it’s actually called the rehearsal) everyone gathers for a meal called the groom’s (or rehearsal) dinner. Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts this dinner that will include parents and siblings, weddingparty members and their spouses or significant others, the parents of any child attendants, and the officiant. Invite out-of town guests if they have already arrived in town for the wedding. O TIPS: Book the venue as far in advance as possible. Verify the use of audiovisual equipment if you have a slideshow. Rachel and Nick rapidly became high school sweethearts when they met their freshman year. Fast forward to July 2012. As part of Nick’s plan, they were walking a trail at Bluff Park in Mankato when they came to a tree with an envelope attached. The writing on it said, “Rachel, please read out loud.” Nick had written a letter about the special memories they shared and why he loved her so much. Between Space and Time You’re husband and wife now, so shake off the last of your nerves and simply enjoy your celebration. All of your planning is behind you—now for the fun part! To personalize your reception, you should exclude any of the following reception elements that do not appeal to you: Create a map of the room and identify where each component of the reception should take place. Include the receiving line, buffet tables, bar, wedding cake, DJ or musicians, head table, immediate family tables, guest tables, guest book table, and the gift table. Your reception site coordinator has the experience of numerous receptions held at the location—experience that will help you plan your logistic options. You will want to
prevent congestion, so locate key elements apart from one another. Have your DJ or musicians play soft background music to allow your guests to mingle. Serve appetizers and drinks as they wait for your arrival. Your photographer may finish taking photographs of the wedding party and family, or you may even choose to take a limo ride throughout this time. The wedding party will arrive at the venue discretely, and the guests then asked to take their seats. The emcee (usually your DJ) will announce the grand entrance of each of the members of the wedding party as they enter the reception and make their way to the head table. All members of your wedding party will sit at the head table, with the exception of the children. Most head tables consist of long rectangular tables where the wedding party sits, facing the guest tables. An alternative to this is the “Sweetheart” table, a small, round table for only the bride and groom. This table allows the couple a bit of privacy for their first meal, and makes it easier for guests to visit the couple without the barrier of the large table. It also allows wedding party members to join their spouses, who may otherwise be at a table with a group of strangers. Each table, in turn, will move through
the buffet line, or will be served by wait staff. Once everyone is served, the best man presents a toast to the couple, which may be followed by additional toasts. After dinner, take time to walk around the reception room to visit each table. Greet your guests and thank them for coming. At the planned time, the emcee will announce the cake cutting. You and your groom complete the ceremonial cutting of the cake, and the emcee will announce the couple’s first dance. This dance may be followed by several additional special dances, and then the floor is opened for everyone to dance. The final reception event is the bouquet toss, and garter throw. Obtain a Minnesota Marriage License You must obtain a license from any Minnesota county Recorder’s office. The marriage does not need to take place in the county where the license is obtained, but must take place within the state. State law requires both applicants to appear in person when applying. Call or see county website for details if either bride or groom cannot apply in person. WAITING PERIOD AND USE. State law requires a five-day waiting period and the issuance of the license. After the waiting period, your license may be picked up or it can be mailed to you. It is then valid to use for six months. FEES. The current fee is $115. The fee for parties who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education is $40. See the county’s website or visit a local office for requirement detail. No refunds are given. MINIMUM AGE FOR MARRIAGE. Must be 18. Be prepared to present proper identification and proof of age with a driver’s license, passport, or a certified copy of birth certificate. PREVIOUS MARRIAGES. Information regarding the termination of the most recent marriage is required (date, court, place) or the date and place of death of the former spouse. WHAT TO DO WITH THE LICENSE. The person who solemnizes your marriage has it signed by the couple and two witnesses and, within five days, files it with the proper government agency for validation. That agency will, in turn, record the certificate in the county marriage records and send a certified copy of the certificate to you.

Catering Service Styles One basic catering question is the difference between the service style options. Here is a breakdown of four popular styles: Buffet Style. Your menu will be set out on long tables and can be self-service or served by staff. Unless properly timed and executed, long lines can quickly form at the buffet tables. If there are more than 50 guests, strongly consider having more than two buffet tables. Plated Service. While your guests are seated, waiters bring meals to the table. The meals are beautifully laid out on the plate and more formal than other options. You may ask guests to select their meal choice as part of their R.S.V.P. Because it is generally the most
expensive, this is considered the most extravagant service style. Station Service. These serveyourself-stations are set throughout the room and offer the guests more variety. Shape, Flavors and DÊcor THE SHAPE Tier: One level of the cake (i.e. a three tier cake.) Layer: A horizontal piece of the cake. One tier is often made up of two or more layers joined together with a filling. Round: A circular cake. It is the traditional wedding cake shape. Square: A box shape. It is a modern shape that gives the baker cleaner, more geometric lines to work with. Hexagon: A cake with six-sides. Scalloped: The edges are curved to resemble the petals of a flower. Generally used for casual weddings such as garden weddings, tea and brunch weddings. Molded: The cake is shaped to resemble a familiar object. These are most commonly used for the groom’s cake. THE DECORATIONS Basket Weave: Results in a cake that resembles a wicker basket. Swiss Dotted: Dots that look like beads are placed randomly over the cake. Piping: A pastry bag and tip are used to make lines on the cake. THE FROSTING AND FILLING Buttercream: A lasting wedding favorite made from butter, cream, and eggs. Its soft texture does not lend itself well to outdoor weddings. Ganache: A cream sauce made from butter and chocolate. The flowers you choose for your wedding will express your personality, complement your gown, and tie-in with the general look and theme of the day.
