AN AMERICAN TREASURE

It’s a bucket list item for Americans and foreigners alike — there are few sculptures in the world that are as impressive as the Shrine of Democracy.

Now, over 80 years after its completion, it is one of the most popular national memorials in the country. Shaping the Granite Mount Rushmore is the perfect balance of art and engineering. Every inch of the faces was pulled out of the mountain using dynamite, drilled into shape and finally finished by hand.

The process took 14 years and the hard work of over 400 men and women to complete. Gutzon Borglum’s original design had the four presidents carved down to their torsos. A combination of unsuitable rock, lack of funding and the escalation of WWII caused the drilling to stop and for Borglum’s original design to be abbreviated (be sure to visit the Sculptor’s Studio at the memorial to see a model of the original design for yourself). In the fall of 1941,

the memorial was officially declared finished.

FUN FACTS:

Planning Your Visit After you park, make your way up the grand set of stairs to the Avenue of Flags. The flags of each state, territory or commonwealth are positioned in alphabetical order. Make sure to take a photo with your state or territory’s flag, and then head toward the amphitheater viewing deck (it’s quite the sight at sunset). Don’t miss the Evening Lighting Ceremony held

The Presidential Trail is a great way to get up close to the presidents if you’re ready for a short walk — just know there are 422 stairs involved. Park rangers will be spread throughout the park; take advantage of their knowledge and join a walking tour! Kids can become Junior Rangers during their visit to Mount

If your kids complete all of the challenges in the booklet, make sure they pick up a certificate from the Visitor Center to commemorate their achievement. After you walk through all there is to see outside, visit the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, where you can see a 14 minute film about the creation of the mountain. You’ll be amazed as you venture through interactive exhibits and the short film in one of the theaters. You can even rent a multimedia

A LIVING HERITAGE

Experience the living heritage of Native Americans by learning and growing at Crazy Horse Memorial®.

Two theatres show the mustsee, 26-minute video “What is Crazy Horse.”

On June 3, 1948, the first blast on the Mountain took place.

Take a piece of the Mountain home with you when you visit the Covered Porch. Porch.

The Purpose The Dream of Crazy Horse Memorial® began in 1939 when Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear asked sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to create a Memorial to pay tribute to American Indians. Standing Bear and others chose Lakota warrior Crazy Horse to be the subject. In May of 1947, Korczak started the project with only $174. On June 3, 1948, a group of people gathered near Crazy Horse Mountain, previously known as Thunderhead Mountain, to

witness the first blast. In the early years, Korczak, his wife Ruth, and their ten children were responsible for Mountain progress and visitor center operations. In 1982, Korczak passed away, leaving Ruth and the children to continue the work. Just over 3 decades later in 2014, Ruth passed away but had laid groundwork to ensure the Memorial was in good hands with Ziolkowski family members, a dedicated Board of Directors, and talented

Carvers have been working diligently on the details of Crazy Horse’s Left Hand, among other features of the Mountain. The Mountain Crew is thrilled about new tools that will expedite progress. More to Discover The Carving is certainly the most visible aspect of Chief Standing Bear and Korczak’s Dream, but visitors are able to spend hours discovering the history and culture of the Native American while visiting the Memorial. The Indian Museum of North America® is home to a large collection of art and artifacts that is sure 19

to inspire and educate any visitor. The Museum, designed to complement the story being told in stone on the Mountain, presents the lives of American Indians and preserves Native Cultures for future generations. The Ziolkowski Family life museum features a view into the original log home and studio of Korczak and Ruth, and their family. The fascinating Mountain Carving gallery gives you a deeper understanding of the Mountain Carving. Visitors are also able to partake in the cultural programming; performances, speakers,

and hands-on activities. Today, thousands of visitors enjoy artisan displays, film showings, and entertainment throughout the year. Make sure to stop by Korczak’s Heritage, Inc. Gift Shop and purchase a memento to take home. Once you’ve completed your tour through the displays of artwork, head outside to the viewing deck. Here, you can use the binoculars to get a closer look at the Mountain. You can also study the full model here to envision the completed Memorial. The Restaurant If you’re in need of a hearty

meal after your visit, don’t leave Crazy Horse Memorial® without first stopping into Laughing Water Restaurant ®. Enjoy local favorites like Native American Tacos or slowcooked buffalo stew — both served on homemade fry bread. The Dream of preserving and honoring the living heritage of the North American Indian began in 1948 and is being carried on today. You are a part of history in the making when you visit the Memorial. Treasure the memories and make it part of your next Southern Hills adventure. 21

CUSTER STATE PARK INSPIRES

“Home on the Range” might as well have been inspired by Custer State Park. Come see some of the most iconic wildlife in America.

Expect at least 60 minutes for the wildlife loop. Plan for extra if you can; you just might get caught in a buffalo traffic jam!

Bison give birth every spring. The light, orangish-brown hair of the babies has earned them the nickname “cinnamons.”

Visitors should only offer healthy snacks like carrots or apples to the begging burros. No junk food, please.

Custer State Park is the oldest and largest state park in South Dakota. Once home to a zoo, the cages have been ditched and visitors are invited to frolic in the spectacular open wilderness. Captivating Critters Home to the second-largest bison herd in the country, you won’t be guaranteed a sighting — there’s over 71,000 acres of land — but your chances are better here than anywhere else. The park is also home to elk, coyotes, bighorn

sheep, mountain goats, pronghorns, prairie dogs and two species of deer. A small pack of burros also call this place home. They’re descended from a herd that used to take visitors up Black Elk Peak, but now they mostly pose for photos and beg for snacks like carrots or apples. Take a Drive There’s three stunning drives in and around the park. Wildlife Loop is where you’ll get to see the animals that call Custer

STAY A WHILE

There are many options for lodging in the park,

including 9 campgrounds, 5 lodges and 6 well-

The Game Lodge is worth a stop even if you don’t stay, but if you do you’ll be in

SOAK IN

Hot Springs is the ideal center of your wellness vacation. Whether that means relaxing at the lake around the campfire, decompressing on a spectacular hike or discovering boutique dining, Hot Springs is your way to soak in the best of the Black Hills.

No Black Hills community knows more about the rejuvenating power of water than Hot Springs. Hot Springs was first settled in 1879, but was officially incorporated in 1890 when local entrepreneurs started building the entire town into a health spa destination. Fred T. Evans built his namesake Evans Plunge over a group of small springs, and by the next year visitors started disembarking by the hundreds in search of promises of renewal and vitality to be found in these warm, mineral-rich waters.

Springing to Life The 87 degree water of Evans Plunge Mineral Springs was the original draw that brought crowds to the area when it opened in 1890, and it still offers family fun to this day; visitors have multiple pools, slides, and activities to choose from year-round. Evans Plunge is a great choice for families to enjoy the warm, healing waters of Hot Springs together. Nearby Moccasin Springs’ pools are even warmer, ranging from 80 to 105 degrees, and much quieter than Evans Plunge. They have

MAMMOTH DISCOVERIES

A Knack for Architecture Revel in the outdoors to your heart’s content, and then come back for an architectural walking tour of Hot Springs. In the late 1800s, there were 27 sandstone quarries in the Black Hills — one of which was owned by Hot Springs’ own Fred T. Evans. These quarries sourced Hot Springs with the materials for the many Richardsonian and Romanesque-style buildings found throughout town; over 30 of them in all. Can you find them all?

STAY AND PLAY IN KEYSTONE

Mining was just the beginning for Keystone; we’ve built on our history to become your Black Hills destination for thrills and amusement.

The Presidential Treatment Following the discovery of gold in nearby Battle Creek, a group of American and British stockholders

acquired more than 1,100 mining locations including the Keystone Mine, which spurred a new settlement in 1891. The discovery of a rich gold strike at the base of Mount Aetna in 1894 led to a mining boom that caused Keystone’s population to swell, aided by the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1900. Tourism surpassed mining in 1927 when sculptor Gutzon Borglum chose nearby Mount Rushmore as the location for his monument to four American presidents, and Keystone

DISCOVERY AND ADVENTURE Custer’s rich history goes hand-in-hand with the discovery of gold. But there’s more treasure to be found in this pristine community.

Custer’s 100-foot wide streets were designed so that ox teams pulling covered freight-wagons could make U-turns.

The first known sermon in Custer was given in a saloon! Legend doesn’t tell us which one, but there are plenty of lively places that fit the bill.

Custer State Park is home to one of the world’s largest bison herds. There are about 1,400 bison in the park.

Let Custer be your launchpad to adventure and discovery. Immerse yourself in the history of our community and be swept away by the sights and sounds of the area. Custer can be a treat for your sense of taste, too. Make sure to check out the variety of flavors that our locals are serving up. We’d also like to invite you to our 101st annual Gold Discovery Days Celebration. We hope you can join us! 101 Years of Discovery Custer’s history is steeped in the history of the Gold

58

Rush. For over 100 years, this community has come together to celebrate the discovery of gold near the town in 1874. Every summer, the community of Custer celebrates the occasion with a carnival, a car show, one of the largest parades in the Black Hills and so much more. Mark your calendars for the Gold Discovery Days Celebration. You won’t want to miss it. Adventure is Waiting It was the land that first brought settlers to Custer when gold was discovered. CUSTER

In January, Custer hosts the Bark Beetle Blues. It’s a homage to the blue tint in wood eaten by the bug, but also to the devastation it’s wrought on nearby forests.

THROUGH THE AIR

The majesty of the Black Hills — and especially the granite

formations that surround Custer — is only amplified when seen from the air. Hop in a helicopter and get ready to see

the outdoors from a breathtaking new perspective. Cruise

past Mount Rushmore and wave at the presidents, or get up close and personal with Crazy Horse; this aerial adventure won’t disappoint!

Prefer to experience nature at a more leisurely pace? The

Regardless of your preferred mode of exploration, we’re excited to host you while you explore. Custer is the best

EAT LIKE THE LOCALS

There’s a quiet battle raging for who has the best burger in the Black Hills, but we challenge you to discover your own favorite dish. Whether it’s burgers, Native American tacos or chislic, our unofficial state food, you won’t go hungry. Chislic You might be wondering what, exactly, chislic is. If you’ve never heard of it that’s alright; it is a dish rarely found outside of South Dakota. It’s thought to have immigrated here with the Germans from Russia. While recipes may vary, it is generally cubed red meat that is marinated and grilled or fried. Sometimes it’s served on a skewer or toothpicks, usually just in a basket with fries. It’s a regional delicacy that you shouldn’t miss. Fry Bread Better than a tortilla and versatile enough to be both savory and sweet; fry bread is a Native American staple you’ll find throughout the Southern Hills. Most are

made simply from water, flour and salt and then fried. Some variations use lard or milk as well. The most popular fry bread on menus are Native American tacos served with ground bison or other game meat rather than beef. Another traditional fare you should keep an eye out for is Wojapi, or a simple berry sauce used for dipping. Chokecherries are the most common, but any berry can be used, and the sauce is generally served alongside fry bread. Both Wojapi and Native American tacos are found locally, especially at Crazy Horse Memorial® and at powwows or other cultural events.

Local Game Speaking of bison, if you’ve never tried it, you are in for a treat. The ubiquitous land mammal symbolizes our area and has infiltrated our cuisine in a big way. The most popular use of bison is as a swap for beef in classic recipes such as tacos, burgers, even the occasional pizza. Bison steaks are also common and a great way to let the true flavor of the meat take center stage. When ordering bison, it’s best to request medium-rare if it suits your palate. Game meat tends to dry out more than beef due to its lean nature. While land mammals tend to steal the show, the Southern Hills are also home

to several lakes, and fishing is a popular pastime here. Even if you don’t have time to catch one, keep an eye out for walleye on menus. As our state fish, you’ll find many locals have almost a reverence for it; which means it’s served in a way that lets the flavor shine. Kuchen As the official state dessert of South Dakota, the only thing as varied as the flavors of kuchen is its pronunciation. Even locals who have eaten it all their life will disagree

FOOD AND DRINK

on how to say it. Some will say “koo-ghen,” others insist “kuh-tchen,” but we all agree to call it delicious. It is historically a European dessert that immigrated to our state in the late 1800s. History and semantics aside, there’s no denying the staying power of this tasty dessert. Kuchen is a sort of fruit pie, made from sweet dough and a custard filling. Berries are a popular addition to the filling, but apple and rhubarb are also favorite flavors for locals. 97

SOUTHERN HILLS SIPS

The flavors of the Southern Hills come alive! Discover your new favorite craft beer or lovingly produced wine at a brewery or winery here in the Southern Hills.

While you’re out finding adventure in the Southern Hills, you might find yourself a bit parched. Our breweries and wineries will fix you right up; whether you want something light and refreshing or deep and flavorful. Most of them also have food, patios, and lawn games that ensure stopping for a beverage will entertain the entire family. Breweries From standard pilsners artfully executed to curious concoctions that will tease your palate, our breweries always have something new to share. Not sure where to start? Each brewery has their own flagship brews that got them started. Most are more

than happy to share what makes it great or give you a personal recommendation. Craft beer has become increasingly popular in the past decade, and the Southern Hills has been home to great brews from the start. What makes ours different is the brewers’ focus on locally sourced ingredients. From hops grown on a nearby farm to carefully tended beehives, our brewers know that the beautiful Black Hills are a bountiful source of exceptional flavors. Wineries While South Dakota’s economy is driven by agriculture, there are actually few grape varieties that do well here. Luckily, that doesn’t

stop our wineries from producing unique, awardwinning wines year after year. Many of our original settlers were experienced in winemaking, and in true pioneer fashion, they brought what they knew and adapted it to prairie living. This is why you’ll find wines around the Southern Hills made from what we call prairie berries. These berries are essentially any fruit found on plants native to the prairie, and they produce wine with a distinct character you won’t find anywhere else. Best of Both Worlds As drinking tastes change, our breweries and wineries adapt. If you love a crisp, bubbly seltzer, you’re in luck!

100

FOOD AND DRINK

Many breweries use locally sourced ingredients — watch for honey, lavender or juniper beers, as they are commonly foraged ingredients.

It’s a family affair: several of our wine and beer makers have been crafting tasty beverages for generations, and their expertise shows!

FOOD & DRINK

Firehouse is the oldest operating brewery in South Dakota, and they offer craft beer, award-winning wine and now camping and lodging!

KID AND FIDO FRIENDLY

Since many breweries and wineries also offer food,

kids and family under legal drinking age are allowed.

Some even cater to younger guests by offering sodas and other hand-crafted

non-alcoholic beverages. On top of that, you’ll find inviting lawns and yard

games everyone can enjoy. A growing number of

establishments in the

Several businesses offer them alongside their other taps and bottles. You can find ciders, meads and nonalcoholic offerings on menus as well. You’ll see some breweries are situated right next door to wineries and vice versa.

Some businesses have expanded their expertise from one craft into another over the years. This means you’ll be able to find both beer and wine in some places, or you can try both by walking a short distance between establishments.

FOOD AND DRINK

Southern Hills also welcome your favorite furry friend.

Most will require your dog

to remain leashed while on the premises and expect the common courtesy of cleaning up after them.

Make sure you call ahead or

check individual businesses’ websites.

REST AND RELAX IN STYLE

Where you lay your head at night is just as important as where you’re exploring next. We have every style of accommodation you could want — because your lodging should be as exceptional as your Southern Hills adventures. When you stay in the Southern Hills, you’re in good company. We’ve hosted movie stars and sitting presidents — all we need is you!

Want the outdoor experience minus the ruggedness? Check out our glamping options; you’ll be sleeping under the stars in style.

104

LODGING

Bringing your four-legged family members? You’ll find lodging that accommodates dogs, cats, even horses!

LODGING

However you’ve arrived, whether by plane or road trip, the last thing you will want to do is drive farther than you have to before settling in. Stay centric to all the Black Hills has to offer by booking at one of the lodging options in the Southern Hills. Comfort in Familiarity Throughout the Southern Hills, you can find all the brand name hotels that you know and trust. You’ll find the usual amenities like continental breakfast and swimming pools, but

also a decidedly Black Hills aesthetic. Many hotels have added rustic decor in their lobbies and rooms. We also have plenty of family-owned hotels and motels we encourage you to check out. You’ll find smaller properties, which means fewer crowds, but the same level of amenities with a homey touch. Some are owned by families who have lived here in the Southern Hills their entire lives, and they’re more than happy to give you the inside scoop on their favorite things to do.

LODGING

Cabins, Rentals, B&Bs A great option if you’re traveling with a large group or extended family is to rent a cabin or ranch house for your stay. You’ll have the entire place to yourself, which in some cases means your own personal patch of wilderness. We have cabins that fit a small family of four to large gatherings of over 20! Looking for a homey feel that comes with stellar food? Look no further than our bed and breakfasts. They’ll welcome you in and treat you like family — and feed you 105

LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS If you want to camp while you’re here, we ask that

you respect the beautiful wilderness by keeping it wild.

Make sure when you set up camp you disturb as little

of the surrounding nature as possible. Keep a clean

camp and don’t leave trash or food lying around. Some areas allow

campfires, but please check with wherever

you’re staying for current restrictions. Our forest

has been ravaged by past wildfires that could have been prevented with proper precautions.

106

LODGING

Some hotels and resorts are close to our pristine lakes and offer water sport rentals for you to enjoy during your stay.

Camping in the hills away from developed fee sites is known as “dispersed camping.” Camp for free for 14 days, but stay 1/2 mile away from other sites.

like one too! You’re certain to find amenable lodging with equally agreeable hosts. One of the newest trends in lodging has also arrived in the Southern Hills: glamping. If you want to spend time immersed in nature with nothing but canvas between you and the outdoors, these rentals will be right up your alley. Enjoy all the conveniences of a cabin, but with less structure. You can find several around the Southern Hills, but act fast — because of their popularity, they sell out quickly.

Motoring for Fun Load up the RV, pack up the travel trailer, or gas up the motorhome. The Southern Hills are calling to all those road warriors and nomads who find a homebase in their RV. If you’re looking for a place to park your rig, discover what so many RVers already know about the Southern Hills — that RVs are welcomed here in a big way. Want to go for the unplugged experience? Book a site at one of the National Forest campgrounds. Fishing, boating and other watery

fun could be just a few steps outside the door of your RV — not to mention the hiking and the views. Maybe you want to take advantage of all of the whistles and bells in your mobile castle. Check out some of the less rustic motorhome experiences that some of the private campgrounds offer. Full hookups, pull through spots, cable access, internet access, pools, fire pits, and other fabulous RV amenities can be found throughout the Southern Hills.

LODGING

LODGING

Prefer to bring home with you? We have a plethora of campgrounds, from primitive hike-in spots to full RV hookups.

107

LODGING One with Nature The first question to ask when considering camping in the Southern Hills is what are you bringing with you? Maybe you or your family are not the type who brings the comforts of home on the road with a fully stocked RV. Maybe you’re searching for a more rugged experience. Maybe you’re more of a carryin-all-of-your-own-gear sort of group. If a camping experience is what you seek, we have plenty of variety to suit

every taste, both in location and amenities. You can find campgrounds with tent areas and hike-in spots all throughout the Southern Hills. And within the Black Hills National Forest, you can camp almost anywhere you can pitch a tent — just make sure to get your permit first. And if you’ve forgotten, lost or broken any necessary piece of camping equipment, the Southern Hills are dotted with adventure outfitters who would be more than happy to help you come up

with a solution to whatever camping dilemma may crop up during your stay. The Southern Hills truly capture the wonder and beauty of the Black Hills — from ponderosa-covered peaks to softly rolling prairies and lake shores. No matter what type of stay you are looking for — whether you’re looking to get pampered or if you’re wanting to really rough it — we welcome you to hang your hat up in our communities and relax with us during your trip.
