Slow Down and Enjoy the Ride on the Scenic Route There’s no better way to discover the Southern Hills than getting out on the road and seeing them first-hand. Even if you’ve been here before, there’s always a new route or trail you haven’t experienced, so get out there and explore! Spring/Summer Biking Hiking ATV/UTVing Horseback Riding Fall/Winter Snowshoeing Snowmobiling Cross-Country Skiing Fat Tire Biking
The Southern Hills are home to hundreds of miles of roads and trails, from groomed highways to dirt hiking paths. Whether you prefer to take a drive or get some exercise, slow down and smell the ponderosas!
Explore the Roads
There’s a lot of road to cover in the Southern Hills, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be going fast. Two of our best routes were intentionally designed to make visitors slow down and enjoy the view. If you’ve ever wanted to experience a whirly jig, now is your chance. Never heard of one? Most call them pigtail bridges, and you’ll find several on Iron Mountain Road. Not only that, you’ll traverse tunnels that perfectly frame Mount Rushmore in stone. Nearby Needles Highway winds through hairpin turns and impressive granite spires that will leave you in awe of nature — and engineering.
Iron Mountain Road was intentionally designed to introduce visitors to Mount Rushmore and the best parts of our beautiful Black Hills.
Most trails are free, but some are within fee areas or require a pass. Make sure you have what you need or you may face a fine.
Play in the Snow
The Southern Hills transform with a blanket of snow, but that doesn’t mean the fun ends. Join us in winter for snow sports such as snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and fat tire biking. Even if you’ve never been, you’re sure to find something to love. In the winter you’ll also find less traffic on the trails — for now. The secret is out and snowmobiling in particular draws larger crowds every year.
Adventure Safely
We encourage you to get out and experience the singularly beautiful area we call home, but please do so safely. The US Forest Service and South Dakota Department of Transportation maintain information about current road and trail status, including closures and other alerts. Please ensure you have the most up-to-date information before starting your adventure.
Looking to try a new sport or activity? Many of our local businesses also provide classes or guided tours to get you started.

Traverse History Along the Mickelson Trail Railways supported the gold mining industry that built the Black Hills, but they fell into disuse when mines closed. We’ve converted them into the Mickelson Trail so you can explore our communities while reveling in the nature we love. Spring/Summer Biking Hiking/Running Horseback Riding Bird Watching Fall/Winter Snowshoeing Cross-Country Skiing Fat Tire Biking Elevation 3,428—6,262 feet
The constant boom and bust of industry is nothing new to the Black Hills, but one in particular has been a backbone to our region: railroads. When gold was discovered here in the 1870s, the railroad followed shortly after to transport mined materials. Passenger and freight transport were close behind, and for a while there was almost always a train passing through the Black Hills. By 1930, however, most of the narrow gauge lines throughout the Black Hills were abandoned due to mine closures. The remaining lines in our area were almost completely abandoned by the 1980s. Tracks stood empty as their fate was determined.
A Second Chance at Life
Luckily, a local outdoor enthusiast group saw potential in our defunct railways and started a campaign to turn them into a trail system. With the backing of then-governor
It took less than 1 year to build the railroad in the early 1890s, but it took 15 years to develop the Mickelson Trail.
The first 6 miles of trail were dedicated in 1991, but the trail wasn’t officially declared complete until 1998.
George S. Mickelson, the project picked up steam in the late 80s. When efforts stalled, the Rails to Trails Conservancy group stepped in. Their help and legal support was the push we needed. Soon after, the Black Hills became home to one of the premier rail-trails in the country.
Using the Trail
Today, there are 15 trailheads throughout the Black Hills. While mostly primitive, trailheads provide parking, picnic tables and vault toilets. Biking is the most common activity, but runners, horseback riders and even bird watchers enjoy use of the area. If you don’t want to do an out-and-back ride, there are businesses throughout the Southern Hills who are happy to help shuttle you and your bike to a trailhead. They can also assist in rentals and have a range of gear on hand for purchase.
George S. Mickelson was South Dakota’s 28th Governor who perished in a plane crash in 1993. The trail is named in his honor.
Tips and Tricks From start to finish, the Mickelson has almost 100 railroad bridges, 4 tunnels, 2,800 feet of elevation change and 109 miles of trail — make sure you plan out your trip so you don’t overexert yourself. The trail doesn’t exceed a 4% grade. This makes it a relatively easy trek, but the northernmost 19 miles can be strenuous. Start your journey toward Deadwood and head south to take advantage of the grade going downhill. You can purchase trail passes at each trailhead. While passes are a self-sale honor system, you can be fined if you’re found on the trail without one. Daily passes cost $4 and annuals are $15; both are per person 12 years and older. Riders under 12 years old are free. There are stretches of the trail that traverse private lands — make sure you remain on the designated trail in these sections! Respect for our neighbors is critical in keeping the entire length of the trail open for recreational use.

Jefferson is credited with bringing ice cream to the US — you can sample his recipe at the Carvers’ Cafe.
While most of South Dakota’s economy is powered by agriculture, the Black Hills aren’t as conducive to farming. Mount Rushmore was originally designed to bring tourists to the area and boost the local economy. Now, almost 80 years after its completion, it is one of the most popular national memorials in the country.
Shaping the Granite
Mount Rushmore is the perfect balance of art and engineering. Every inch of the faces was pulled out of the mountain using dynamite, drilled into shape and finally finished by hand. The process took 14 years and over 400 men and women to complete. Even then, the mountain was declared complete before it fully realized Gutzon Borglum’s vision. A combination of unsuitable rock, lack of funding, and the escalation of WWII caused the drilling to stop. In the fall of 1941, they officially declared the memorial finished. There is a nightly lighting ceremony during summer months, including a patriotic video and flag folding.
Dig Into History
If you’re wondering what the original design was, you’re in luck: a visit to the Sculptor’s Studio on site has a 1/12th scale model of the mountain as envisioned by Borglum. You can also see authentic tools used for carving the mountain. The Sculptor’s Studio isn’t the only place you should visit while on site. Don’t miss the Lincoln Borglum Visitor’s Center, where you can see a 14 minute film about the creation of the mountain. The Presidential Trail is a great way to get up close to the presidents if you’re ready for a short walk — just know there are 422 stairs involved. If your kids take part in the Junior Ranger program, make sure you pick up a booklet at one of the information desks so they can earn a new badge. After you’ve explored the memorial, come back to the main plaza for snacks and souvenirs. You’ll find a variety of fare for lunch or dinner, and a variety of shirts, postcards, books and toys to take home.
Carver Gutzon Borglum died before his masterpiece was completed, but his son Lincoln made sure it was finished.
Mount Rushmore fun facts: To clock into work every day, carvers had to climb 700 stairs to the top of the mountain. President Jefferson was originally on Washington’s other side — but it turns out that rock isn’t suitable for carving, so he was blasted off the rock and relocated. Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln were chosen to represent our nation’s birth, growth, development, and preservation, respectively.

On June 3, 1948, the first blast on the Mountain took place.

Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski had been asked by Chief Henry Standing Bear through written correspondence to come to the sacred Paha Sapa (Black Hills) to carve a memorial in the likeness of Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse to honor native Americans. In May of 1947, Korczak started the project with only $174. On June 3, 1948, a group of people gathered near Crazy Horse Mountain, previously known as Thunderhead Mountain, to witness the first blast. A family legacy From the beginning, Ruth (Ross) Ziolkowski supported Korczak in the realization of the Dream and assisted in multiple facets of the project. The couple married on Thanksgiving Day in 1950 and started a family at Crazy Horse; by the mid-1960s, they had ten children. Still today, many Ziolkowski family members carry on the family legacy. The Dream from long ago is now embedded in those who remain at Crazy Horse, including a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, one of Korczak and Ruth’s daughters who serves as CEO, as well as many dedicated, skilled professionals.

Custer State Park is the oldest and largest state park in South Dakota. We were once home to a zoo, but we’ve ditched the cages and we invite you to frolic in our spectacular open wilderness.
Captivating Critters
We are home to the secondlargest buffalo herd in the country. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see them — we have over 71,000 acres of land — your chances are better here than anywhere else. The park is also home to elk, coyotes, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, pronghorns, prairie dogs and two species of deer. We have a small pack of burros, too. They’re descended from a herd that used to take visitors up Black Elk Peak, but now they mostly pose for photos and beg for snacks.
Take a Drive
We have three stunning drives around the park, and we hope you’ll have time for all of them. Wildlife Loop is where you’ll get to see the animals that call

Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway are more about the scenery. Iron Mountain Road was intentionally crafted to showcase all the best parts of the Black Hills to visitors. They’ll take you an hour each, but they’re masterpieces of engineering that prove roads can be art.
Stay a While
There are many options for lodging in the park, including 9 campgrounds, 5 lodges and 6 well-appointed cabins and ranch houses. Wherever you stay, you’ll have stunning views. The Game Lodge is worth a stop even if you don’t stay, but if you do you’ll be in good company: President Eisenhower stayed for a weekend, and President Coolidge stayed so long in 1927 it was known as the “Summer White House.”
Don’t forget snacks for the burros. They’ll eat almost anything, but we hear they hate rutabagas!
Safety While in the Park The number one rule while enjoying Custer State Park: do not approach or harass wildlife. Buffalo, especially, are dangerous. They may seem docile, but they are quick to charge and can reach speeds of 40mph. While you’re less likely to be hurt by the other wildlife, please maintain a safe distance. Rangers recommend you stay 100 yards from any animal, and if they change their behavior because of your presence, you are too close. Back away, or better yet, return to your vehicle.

The Ice Age and Beyond
Researchers from all over the world visit this state-of-theart research facility to learn more about Ice Age (11,000+ years old) fossils. To date, at least 61 mammoths have been discovered and excavated here, along with the remains of two Giant short-faced bears, camelops, llama, and a vast amount of invertebrates. When you visit, you’ll start in our Learning Center. Opening its doors during the spring of 2015, the Center includes two 53-seat theaters where you will be able to view a short, 10-minute HD introductory video. Make Monumental Memories, Visit Keystone Mining was just the beginning of Keystone innovation; we’ve built on our history to become your Black Hills destination for thrills and amusement. Population 339 (2017) Elevation 4,331 feet The Beginning of Tourism in the Hills When Keystone became the home to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, it launched an entire industry of tourism. Now, this quaint town is a hub of activity for all ages.
Keystone is home to trailblazers of all sorts, both in years past and in modern innovation. Here, you can walk in the footsteps of miners, carvers, even presidents. You can also zip through the trees and shriek on roller coasters. Whatever thrills you, Keystone has everything you need to make your vacation monumental.
There’s Gold in the Hills
The first real interest in Keystone was in 1876, when placer gold was discovered nearby in Battle Creek. While placer gold was plentiful, it was also difficult to extract, so local prospectors moved towards underground lode mining. This shift increased the amount of gold coming out of Keystone exponentially — but it also came with an increase in miner injuries and deaths. It was a price they were willing to pay, however, and the population of Keystone soon grew to over 2,000 residents. Walking into Keystone’s mines today is a walk through

the past. Every step you take underground is in the footprints of our original entrepreneurs — gold prospectors and miners. You can learn about technology they used in the mines and museums in Keystone and even try your own hand at goldpanning.
Building on History
Today, Keystone is a mix of Old West ruggedness and new-day technology. Downtown, enjoy our wooden boardwalk that will transport you back to the days of cowboys and outlaws — you might even see a shootout between local gunslingers in the middle of town! Prefer to live like the Old West yourself? Visit one of our local old time photo shops. You can dress up in western regalia and take photos home for the perfect souvenir. Just up the road from us is the world-renowned carving of Mount Rushmore. Visit the memorial, but also see the story behind it at museums here in town. You’ll learn all there is to know about the mountain and

Famous Faces There are more faces in town than Mount Rushmore. In fact, you can find 45 of our presidents if you know where to look! There’s also Gutzon Borglum, the man behind the faces, and his portfolio of sculptures prior to his time in Keystone.

family can be part of the fun. Push your vacation into high gear on any of the rides and attractions offered in town; you’ll make memories that last a lifetime. We also have indoor fun that will entertain you no matter what the weather is doing — it has a tendency to surprise us. Our array of arcade games, mazes, and even virtual reality adventures will give you the chance to be engaged and have fun. No matter what draws you in during your stay in Keystone, our local innovators are always coming up with new ideas. Make sure you plan to come back and see what our new thrills are! We’ll make sure your vacation is memorable, but we also know that it will be new and exciting every time.
Memories Await
Keystone has become a true base of adventure. Beyond mines and museums we are home to attractions that will fill every vacation wish-list. Let the wind rush through your hair as you tube or slide your way down the hills we call home. You’ll also find roller coasters, aerial walkways and ziplines — if it gets your blood pumping, we’ve got it! We even have obstacle courses created specially for our youngest visitors, so the entire

Gold! There are two forms of gold found around Keystone: placer and lode. Placer gold is residual flakes or nuggets found by panning in river beds. This form was first discovered 2 miles east of town and is abundant in the area, but the depth of deposits make placer gold impractical to extract. Lode gold forms in veins within the earth’s surface and is more profitable because of larger deposit sizes. However, the use of explosives and risk of tunnels caving in makes it dangerous to obtain.

Did you know? The town of Custer was almost named Stonewall after Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, instead of after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The original settlers of Custer were mostly Civil War veterans, split between Union and Confederate soldiers. When the votes were cast Custer won, but only just barely! As the first town established due to the discovery of gold in the Black Hills, Custer has had its share of booms and busts. From a population of 10,000 at the height of the rush, down to a measly 14 at the bust, Custer now boasts a pleasant collection of about 2,000 permanent residents. Locals host celebrations for the gold rush with Gold Discovery Days in July, and the defeat of the pine beetle with the Burning Beetle in January. No matter the season or the reason, Custer should be the center of all your Black Hills adventures.

If you like exploring on your own two feet we have gorgeous hiking trails that will suit you. Take a leisurely stroll around rock-lined Sylvan Lake, enjoy serene nature around Deerfield Lake, or paddle your way across Sheridan Lake. All have magnificent views with trails the whole family can enjoy. If you prefer motorized fun, an afternoon exploring Black Hills National Forest on some of South Dakota’s best ATV and UTV trails is hard to beat. We’re also centrally located to all levels of climbing routes. Scale summits like Black Elk Peak and enjoy amazing scenic views, or head for forested vistas in Custer State Park — both are just minutes away.
Welcome to Downtown
We may be called the Heart of the Hills because of our location, but our locals’ hospitality really drives it home.
Stroll Main Street on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day and enjoy tasty delicacies at Tour de Chocolate.
ART With the beauty of the Black Hills all around us, our artists have unending inspiration for their work, and many have galleries and stores in town. To immerse yourself in our local art, start out with a visit to our galleries: ArtForms Gallery, Jon Crane Gallery, Warrior’s Work & Ben West Gallery, Insideout GalleryHome-Garden and Gypsy Rose Studio & Gallery. For a more casual approach, stroll down Main Street to feel like you’re walking through an open-air art studio. Our sidewalks are dotted with colorful sculptures, detailed wood carvings and unique finds for sale.

Living Waters Hot Springs From mineral springs to recreational lakes, we are the center of your wellness vacation. Whether it’s to relax at the lake around the campfire, decompress on a spectacular hike or discover boutique dining, Hot Springs is your destination. Water is the bringer of life in many ways; it nourishes our food, sustains our bodies and revitalizes our souls. This rejuvenation is the focus of Hot Springs — we embrace a more leisurely, peaceful pace compared to much of the rest of the Black Hills. No matter if you’re looking to soak in the water, play on it, or simply camp next to it, let us help you reconnect with the important things in life. Hot Springs was first settled in 1879, but was officially incorporated in 1890 when local entrepreneurs started building the entire town into a health spa destination. Fred T. Evans built his namesake Evans Plunge over a group of small springs, and by the next year visitors started disembarking by the hundreds in search of promises of renewal and vitality.
Giving Back
The healing nature of Hot Springs quickly became about more than just tourists, when the South Dakota State Veterans Home opened in 1891. Battle Mountain Sanitarium

followed shortly after and was the first dedicated veterans’ hospital in the country. It laid the groundwork for what is now the Department of Veterans Affairs. Today, our veterans still find care and wellbeing, not to mention our thanks, in the calm of Hot Springs.
Get Out and About
Not only are we a center for health and wellness, we are also a base for outdoor adventure. Several prime South Dakota lakes are within easy driving distance of town, including Angostura Reservoir, Hidden Lake Campground and Resort, Cold Brook Lake, and Cottonwood Springs Lake. Between them, you’ll find world-class fishing and birdwatching, not to mention some of the best sandy beaches in South Dakota. Looking to heal by being one with nature? There are ample hiking trails in our area — Wind Cave National Park alone boasts over 30 miles of trail. Check out Rankin Ridge trail, which will take you to the highest point in the park and give you views all the way to the Badlands on a

We love our history in Hot Springs — all the way back 26,000 years ago! Uncovered in 1974, the Mammoth Site is home to unearthed fossils of over 60 mammoths, and counting! New digs happen every year, so there’s always something new to see. They have a selfguided walking tour app you can download before arrival, as well as traditional guided tours of their indoor working dig site. Be sure to check out their Junior Paleontologist dig programs; they’re a one-of-akind experience, but they fill up fast. One of the newest additions in town, the World Fossil Finder Museum brings fossils from all over the world to Hot Springs. Their exhibits include the largest Tylosaurus found in South Dakota, and one of the largest in the world. “Debby Sue” is over 50 feet long, and named for the wife of renowned fossil hunter Frank Garcia — who also owns and operates the museum.

Explore History
Hike, camp, and revel in the outdoors to your heart’s content, and then come back and see us for an architectural walking tour of our sandstone buildings. In the late 1800s, there were 27 sandstone quarries in the Black Hills — one of which was owned by Hot Springs’ own Fred T. Evans. These quarries sourced Hot Springs with the materials for our abundance of Richardsonian and Romanesque style buildings; over 30 of them in all.
Downtowns’ Kidney Springs is thought to have healing properties; specifically for kidneyrelated illnesses.
Exploring the history of Hot Springs is fascinating work — but it will build up an appetite. Refuel and take a break at one of our unique dining options, from pizza and local beer to fine dining worthy of celebrating special occasions. For creatively crafted cuisine, Buffalo Dreamer at Moccasin Springs is a favorite, and showcases locally sourced delicacies sure to tantalize your taste buds. The Black Hills hum with the hustle and bustle of locals and visitors alike as we get out and experience nature. Hot Springs, however, is where you come to relax, rejuvenate and soak in your surroundings. We are your gateway to relaxation and wellness, and we look forward to being part of your journey.
Hidden Lake Campground and Resort is the only resort in the Southern Black Hills that can boast its own private lake.
A tale of two springs: Evans Plunge Mineral Springs’ 87 degree waters were the original draw that brought crowds to the area when it opened in 1890, and it still offers family fun to this day; visitors have multiple pools, slides, and activities to choose from year-round. Nearby Moccasin Springs’ pools are even warmer, ranging from 88 to 102 degrees. They have four pools, two large enough for swimming and two for soaking. The resurrected bathhouse opened in 2019 and is the epitome of wellness and relaxation.
Angostura Reservoir is a great swimming hole and fishing paradise with 36 miles of shoreline and water depths up to 75 feet.

2021
Welcome to Foodie Paradise There’s a quiet battle raging for who has the best burger in the Black Hills, but we challenge you to discover your own favorite dish. Whether it’s burgers, Native American tacos, or our unofficial state food chislic, you won’t go hungry. Life is short — get dessert! Everyone knows that calories don’t count when you’re on vacation. And trust us when we tell you the Black Hills are filled with sweet treats you are going to love. Save room at dinner, because you won’t want to miss dessert.
Chislic
You might be wondering what, exactly, chislic is. If you’ve never heard of it that’s alright; it is a dish rarely found outside of South Dakota. It’s thought to have immigrated here with the Germans from Russia. While recipes vary, it is generally cubed red meat marinated and grilled or fried. Sometimes it’s served on a skewer or toothpicks, usually just in a basket with fries. It’s a regional delicacy that you shouldn’t miss.
Fry Bread
Better than a tortilla and versatile enough to be both savory and sweet; fry bread is a Native American staple you’ll find throughout the Southern Hills. Most are made simply from water, flour and salt and then fried. Some variations use lard or milk as well. The most popular fry bread on menus are Native American tacos served with
Many places have gluten-free and vegetarian options if you ask. Also look for locally sourced produce for fresh eats!
While they’re technically bison, some menus will list this land mammal as buffalo. Either way, it’s a unique flavor you shouldn’t miss.
ground bison or other game meat rather than beef. Another traditional fare you should keep an eye out for is Wojapi, or a simple berry sauce used for dipping. Chokecherries are the most common but any berry can be used, and the sauce is generally served alongside fry bread. Both Wojapi and Native American tacos are found locally, especially at Crazy Horse Memorial®, and at powwows or other cultural events.
Local Game
Speaking of bison, if you’ve never tried this large game, you are in for a treat. The ubiquitous land mammal symbolizes our area more than any other and has infiltrated our cuisine in a big way. The most popular use of bison is in place of any recipe that uses beef: tacos, burgers, even the occasional

pizza. Bison steaks are also common and a great way to let the true flavor of the meat take center stage. When ordering bison, it’s best to request medium-rare if it suits your palate. Game meat tends to dry out more than beef due to its lean nature. While land mammals tend to steal the show, the Southern Hills are also home to several lakes, and fishing is a popular pastime here. Even if you don’t have time to catch one, keep an eye out for walleye on menus. As our state fish, you’ll find many locals have almost a reverence for it; which means it’s served in a way that lets the flavor shine. For lunch you’ll usually find it fried with a side of tartar sauce and fries. For dinner, grilled or baked with lemon and a side of vegetables
is a simple way enjoy walleye without overpowering it.
Visit the southern hills in February to catch Custer’s annual Restaurant Week, where local chefs showcase exciting new dishes.
Kuchen
As the official state dessert of South Dakota, the only thing as varied as the flavors of kuchen is its pronunciation. Even locals who have eaten it all their life will disagree on how to say it. Some will say “koo-ghen,” others insist “kuh-tchen,” but we all agree to call it delicious. It is historically a European dessert that immigrated to our state in the late 1800s. History and semantics aside, there’s no denying the staying power of this tasty dessert. Kuchen is a sort of fruit pie, made from sweet dough and a custard filling. Berries are a popular addition to the filling, but apple and rhubarb are also local favorites.
August is Hill City’s time to shine, when they host a weekend festival dedicated to top-notch BBQ, local beer and wine, and live music.

Food truck havens The recent popularity of food trucks around the country hasn’t missed the Black Hills. Truck offerings vary, but some of our most-loved in the Southern Hills sell Mexican food and BBQ. There’s always something new to explore, with rotating menus and new trucks coming into town all the time! While most of our trucks maintain a nomadic lifestyle, they regularly post their whereabouts on social media. Many will rotate around local breweries and parks, so keep your eyes peeled!
Want an Old West dinner experience? Look for chuck-wagon dinners, where you’ll enjoy wagon rides, music shows and steaks grilled over a campfire.

Kick Back, Relax and Enjoy a Refreshing Beverage It’s no secret we love our presidents here in the Southern Hills, and there’s one thing we certainly agree with them on: beer is as American as apple pie and baseball. Enjoy a tasty beverage, but do so responsibly! While nothing beats a cold beer on a hot summer day, the fastest way to ruin your vacation is driving under the influence. Make sure you plan ahead! There are taxi services throughout the Southern Hills that are happy to assist as well.
While you’re out finding adventure in the Southern Hills, you might find yourself a bit parched. Our breweries and wineries will fix you right up; whether you want something light and refreshing or deep and flavorful. Most of them also have food, patios and lawn games that ensure stopping for a beverage will entertain the entire family.
Wineries
From standard pilsners artfully executed to curious concoctions that will tease your palate, our breweries always have something new to share. Not sure where to start? Each brewery has their own flagship brews that got them started. Most are more than happy to share what makes it great or give you a personal recommendation. Craft beer has become increasingly popular in the past decade, and the Southern Hills has been home to great brews from the start. What makes
While South Dakota’s economy is driven by agriculture, there are few grape varieties that do well here. Luckily, that doesn’t stop our wineries from producing unique, awardwinning wines year after year. Many of our original settlers were experienced in winemaking, and in true pioneer fashion they brought what they knew and adapted it to prairie living. This is why you’ll find wines around the Southern Hills made from what we call prairie berries. These berries are essentially any fruit found on plants native to the prairie, and they produce wine with a distinct character you won’t find anywhere else.
Live music is a staple of our breweries and wineries. You can find an artist or group performing almost every night in the summer.
Commercial wineries weren’t legal in South Dakota until 1996. Now, we have over 30 around the state — including 4 in the Southern Hills.
Breweries
You’ve heard of a dine and dash, but did you know leaving a saloon without paying is called a shoot the crow?
ours different is brewers’ focus on locally sourced ingredients. From hops grown on a nearby farm to carefully tended beehives, our brewers know that the beautiful Black Hills are a bountiful source of exceptional flavors.

FOOD AND DRINK
Best of Both Worlds
Kid and Fido Friendly
As drinking tastes change, our breweries and wineries adapt. If you love a crisp, bubbly seltzer, you’re in luck! Several businesses offer them alongside their other taps and bottles. You can find ciders, meads and non-alcoholic offerings on menus as well. You’ll see some breweries are situated right next door to wineries and vice versa. Some businesses have expanded their expertise from one craft into another over the years. This means you’ll be able to find both beer and wine in some places, or you can try both by walking a short distance between establishments.
Firehouse is the oldest operating brewery in South Dakota, and they offer craft beer, awardwinning wine and now camping and lodging!
Since many breweries and wineries also offer food, kids and family under legal drinking age are allowed. Some even cater to younger guests by offering sodas and other hand-crafted non-alcoholic beverages. On top of that, you’ll find inviting lawns and yard games everyone can enjoy. A growing number of establishments in the Southern Hills also welcome your favorite furry friend. Most will require your dog to remain leashed while on the premises and expect the common courtesy of cleaning up after them. Make sure you call ahead or check individual businesses’ websites, as policies may change.
Many breweries use locally sourced ingredients — watch for honey, lavender or juniper beers, as they are commonly foraged ingredients.

Red Beer Why would you add tomato juice to a beer? Around here, the question might really be why wouldn’t you? It’s a seemingly strange habit to outsiders but second-nature to locals. Red beer is especially popular for those who like an easy brunch cocktail. You might not find it on a menu, but most bars and restaurants will know what you mean if you ask. Many use simple tomato juice, but clamato and Bloody Mary mix are also common.
It’s a family affair: several of our wine and beer makers have been crafting tasty beverages for generations, and their expertise shows!

Prefer to bring home with you? We have a plethora of campgrounds, from primitive hike-in spots to full RV hookups.
Some hotels and resorts are close to our pristine lakes and offer water sport rentals for you to enjoy during your stay.
Leave Only Footprints If you want to camp while you’re here, we ask that you respect the beautiful wilderness by keeping it wild. Make sure when you set up camp you disturb as little of the surrounding nature as possible. Keep a clean camp and don’t leave trash or food lying around. Some areas allow campfires, but please check with wherever you’re staying for current restrictions. Our forest has been ravaged by past wildfires that could have been prevented with proper precautions.
Camping in the hills away from developed fee sites is known as “dispersed camping.” Camp for free for 14 days, but stay 1/2 mile away from other sites.
