the cheers start as stock are chased and riden around the arena. Be sure to watch the half time show, too! Rodeo clowns often act out skits, kids will compete in stick horse races and even mutton busting– where they hold onto a sheep for a mock “bull” ride. Cowboys and cowgirls from all over the nation compete in local, professional rodeos, several of which have been honored as the best in the nation. Participants go to local and state rodeos to earn money to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Once a cowboy/ cowgirl makes the cut, they become a “card holder”, and are given preference at rodeos. Each rodeo is a serious competition, but big on family fun, too. So, round up the family, pull on your boots, and embrace the culture as you head out to the rodeo!
BLACK HILLS STOCK SHOW & RODEO JAN. 25 – FEB. 3 For 10 days every winter one of the largest stock shows in America is held in Rapid City. Several miles of steel fencing and an arena full of dirt (just over 1,000 tons of it) turn the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center facility into an upscale, giant barn for the annual Black Hills Stock Show ®. The event draws hundreds of thousands of people from the Midwest, Canada, and Mexico to watch cowboys and cowgirls compete in the PRCA rodeos and visit nearly 300 vendors.

Step out of the typical city routine this season and enjoy an All-American cowboy experience while you are on vacation in the Black Hills. Rodeo action began in South Dakota in the late 1890’s when area ranchers competed against each other in everyday chores. Events included aspects of every day ranch life including cow milking, branding, and doctoring livestock. Captivating audiences with entertainment, rodeo has evolved into a nationwide sport. Adopted in February of 2003, South Dakota named the high-adrenaline competition its state sport. Spectators from all over the world watch competitors in individual and team events. Calf roping, bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling and bronc riding are just a few you can see at a rodeo. When the gates open,

HIKING Take in the Scenery
Follow more than 450 miles of hiking trails in and around the Black Hills National Forest for the most spectacular views of the winter wonderland. Favorite spots include Black Elk Peak, Needles spires, Little Devils Tower, and a network of trails connected to Sylvan Lake are near Hill City. Bear Butte, a breathtaking geological formation surrounded by hiking trails, is just outside Sturgis, too. Head to Spearfish Canyon to see awe-inspiring frozen waterfalls at Community Caves, Roughlock Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

SKIING & SNOWBOARDING A Pass to Downhill Fun
Terry Peak and Deer Mountain ski areas both offer a variety of slopes and trails for every experience level, making way for fun the whole family can appreciate. Terry Peak summits over 7,100 feet, has more than 20 miles of trails on groomed slopes and offers its riders access to four high-speed detachable quad chairlifts. Deer Mountain has an 850-foot vertical drop and more than 40 different mountain trails, as well as a Zero Gravity Tube Park with a 1,000-foot tube lift. 12

The Catch of Your Stay
Fishing in the Black Hills doesn’t stop with the cooler weather as ice fishing is allowed on all lakes in the Black Hills National Forest. One-day, three-day, and yearlong fishing licenses are available at Black Hills stores, courthouses, or from the Game, Fish and Parks Department’s offices and website. Use caution; never take the ice depth for granted. Always test the location before driving out or drilling into the ice. Prime ice fishing spots are at Sheridan Lake near Rapid City, Deerfield Lake northwest of Hill City, and Pactola Reservoir west of Rapid City.

SNOWSHOEING & CROSS COUNTRY SKIING Glide Across the Winter Wonderland
Feel the brisk, South Dakota air as you trek nearly 60 miles of trails on snowshoes and skis! Get your gear from the local experts at the sporting goods outlets and rental shops, then prepare for breathtaking views as you explore the Black Hills. Beaver Creek Ski System near Custer, Deerfield Reservoir Complex west of Hill City, and Carson Draw trail system near Crook County, Wyoming are all popular areas for winter activities.

Hit The Trails Whether you’re mountain biking or riding a fat bike, there are trails for all levels throughout the Black Hills. The most famous route, Centennial Trail, is a 111-mile path for more advanced riders. It stretches from Bear Butte State Park near Sturgis to Wind Cave National Park near Hot Springs. Fat biking enthusiasts from all over the country flock to the winter wonderland of the Black Hills. Custer State Park, the Mickelson Trail, and Buzzards Roost trail system are all great options for an exciting winter biking experience.
SNOWMOBILING Countless Miles of Adventure
The Black Hills has more than 350 miles of groomed, mapped, and marked snowmobile trails. Each year, the trails open to experts and beginners alike in midDecember and remain open through March. Parking is available at trailheads for convenient access—many of which include pit stops and warming stations. Some local’s favorite trails can be found in Spearfish Canyon and outside Lead and Deadwood.

SCENIC DRIVES EXPLORE THE HIGHWAYS & BYWAYS
Wind your way through Spearfish Canyon to see waterfalls, babbling brooks, and changing fall foliage. Head down Needles Highway, full of granite spires and ponderosa pine forests, in Custer State Park. Or, drive past hills covered in trees in the 17mile Vanocker Canyon outside of Rapid City, which continues to the quaint town of Nemo, and 12-mile Boulder Canyon (US Hwy 14A) between Sturgis and Deadwood. Whether admiring the autumn colors, the Black Hills' winter wonderland, or the wealth of interesting wildlife, you can experience the Hills without leaving your car! The 70-mile Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway near Custer State Park curves around serene lakes, towering geological formations, tunnels, tight turns, and through wildlife areas. For wide-open spaces and views of one-of-a-kind formations, 14

add the Badlands Loop and S D Hwy 34 to WY Hwy 24 (Belle Fourche to Devils Tower) to your list. And, the 31-mile Badlands Loop is consistently rated as one of the best scenic drives in the country, and goes through passes, 15 overlooks, eight trails, and an informative visitor center packed with interesting history, paleontology, and geological tidbits. If you cross over the South Dakota/Wyoming border, in Crook County, the drive to Cement Ridge Lookout cannot be missed! Visitors can drive to the peak, which has majestic views of the sprawling Black Hills and a fire watch tower is at the top. While it is not vehicle accessible in the winter, Cement Ridge is well-known for its views of the changing autumn leaves. No matter where your path is taking you on your Black Hills roadtrip, scenic views will meet you along the way.
WINTER NOTICE: The Needles Highway has no winter maintenance and typically is closed from November 1 to April 1. The roads at Cement Ridge are closed during the winter snow season. After a heavy snow, check for possible road closures. Winter weather is unpredictable in South Dakota and road conditions can change quickly. Stay safe, and know before you go.

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL
Take in the sites as you come face-to-face with the four United States presidents carved in stone in the Black Hills. Nestled into the side of granite hills, the carved faces of four United States presidents are a site to see for many—and an experience you will remember for a lifetime. Starting with a vision in the early 1920s, South Dakota State Historian Doane Robinson and others first envisioned Old West heroes carved into the granite spires of the Needles. Convinced of the project’s potential, the talented sculptor Gutzon Borglum decided that four presidents representing the first 150 years of American history would be the most appropriate subjects for carving. In the end, Rushmore Mountain near Keystone was 16

chosen due to the size of the project. President Calvin Coolidge formally dedicated the project on August 10, 1927, and efforts continued on the carving of Mount Rushmore for the next fourteen years. NEARING COMPLETION When Borglum died in March 1941, officials turned the project over to his son, Lincoln, for completion. Due to the escalation of World War II and the lack of funds, the four figures were never completed. Borglum’s original vision included the Presidents sculpted down to their waists, but the famous monument remains iconic.
A VIEW TO REMEMBER Your trip to Mount Rushmore should include all the National Memorial has to offer. After you park, make your way up the stairs greeted by The Avenue of Flags—an aisle of 56 state flags and territories established in 1976 as part of the celebration of America’s Bicentennial. Then, say hello to Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln from the amphitheater viewing deck. After you walk through all there is to see outside, visit the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center and Museum and be entranced through interactive exhibits and two 125-seat theaters showing

HOURS AND SEASONS The visitor facilities at the Monument are open all year, seven days a week, with the exception of December 25, when buildings are closed, but grounds are open. ENTRANCE FEES There is no admission fee charged to see the Memorial, as per the

wishes of Borglum himself. However, a fee-based system provides convenient parking: $10 per vehicle and $50 per bus. PRESIDENTIAL TRAIL Walk the half-mile loop (includes 422 stairs) for unique views from the base of the Monument.
NIGHT LIGHTING Evening Lighting Ceremonies are held beginning the Friday before Memorial Day to Sept. 30 each year. (May 25-Aug.11: Nightly at 9 p.m.; Aug. 12-Sept. 30: Nightly at 8 p.m.) Military and veterans are invited on stage to participate in a flag-folding ceremony.

CRAZY HORSE ® MEMORIAL CARVING A DREAM Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation

Be a part of history in the making as you visit Crazy Horse Memorial—the world’s largest carving in progress near Custer. On June 3, 1948, a group of people gathered near Crazy Horse Mountain, previously known as Thunderhead Mountain, to witness the first blast—and to mark the beginning of a Dream that would span multiple generations. Among those attending were five of the nine remaining survivors of the Battle of the Little Big Horn and then-South Dakota Governor George T. Mickelson. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski had been asked by Chief Henry Standing Bear through written correspondence to come to the 18

sacred Paha Sapa (Black Hills) to carve a memorial honoring a Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse had been killed at Fort Robinson in 1877. In his letter to Korczak, Henry Standing Bear wrote, “My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know the red man has great heroes, also.” In May of 1947, Korczak started the project with only $174. Labor-intensive tasks included single-jacking (handdrilling) holes for the dedication blast and the countless blasts that followed. Later, he built a
741-step staircase, which he climbed several times daily— often to restart “Buda,” the air compressor at the bottom that powered his drill. Despite weather that could make work difficult, Korczak continued the monumental endeavor yearround (weather permitting). A FAMILY LEGACY From the beginning, Ruth (Ross) Ziolkowski supported Korczak in the realization of the Dream and assisted in multiple facets of it. The two even went to the extent of outlining the sculpture

On June 3, 1948, the first blast on the Mountain took place. Among those in attendance were five survivors of the Battle of Little Bighorn.
WHERE Located north of Custer at 12151 Avenue of the Chiefs, Crazy Horse Memorial is hard to miss as you drive along Highway 16/385. FEES AND DONATIONS The project, founded and operated on a strong belief in free enterprise, is funded by visitor entrance fees and donations and does not accept government funding. DON’T MISS INSIDE Inside the 40,000-square-foot Welcome Center is where the storytelling begins. Two theaters show the must-see “Dynamite & Dreams” 20-minute video. on the Mountain with sixfoot-wide white lines, using 164 gallons of paint, to help visitors envision the future. With Mountain measurements and binoculars in hand, Ruth directed construction by radio from the Visitor Center while Korczak dangled from a rope nearly one mile away, painting on the Mountain. Ruth and Korczak were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1950 and started a family at Crazy Horse; by the mid-1960s, they had ten children. The children contributed to the progressing Dream; while the boys helped Korczak on the Mountain, the girls assisted Ruth in the Visitor Complex

and “around the house.” Still today, many Ziolkowski family members carry on the family legacy. Following Korczak’s death on October 20, 1982, Ruth made the well-considered decision to shift focus to Crazy Horse’s Face, a profile that would be visible proof of the project’s continuation. This effort to show the world was a success, and was marked by the dedication of Crazy Horse’s finished Face on June 3, 1998. This was one of many milestones that took place as Ruth carried on the leadership role. She remained heavily involved in all aspects until her death on May 21, 2014.

The details of the exquisite carving can be seen from the viewing deck binoculars near Laughing Water Restaurant. CURRENT PROGRESS The current Carving focus is on Crazy Horse’s Hand and the Horse’s Mane area. Rock removal in this delicate area is labor intensive; in many ways, similar to work on Crazy Horse’s Face. This involves a great deal of drilling, and uses a process referred to as “feathers and wedges” that removes rows of blocks—visible from the Viewing Veranda at the Visitor Complex less than one mile away. Blocking-out the sculpture has progressed to the benches, an area measured in 20-foot increments starting from the top of Crazy Horse’s Head. Blasting is most common in this phase of rock removal. In all the effort over the years, the man called Crazy Horse has been steadily emerging out of the stone walls. As though in response to the question he was once asked by a white trader, “Where are your lands now?” firmly Crazy Horse answers visually in stone with his original response: “My lands are where my dead lie buried.” A LOOK AT THE FUTURE Today, the Dream from long ago is still embedded in those who remain at Crazy Horse, including a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, two of Korczak and Ruth’s daughters who serve as CEOs, as well as many dedicated, skilled professionals. A project that began simply with a letter has grown into an icon of history, culture, and humanity; and it continues to possess farreaching implications for the state and nation.

CUSTER STATE PARK EXPERIENCE THE ADVENTURE
Create memories as you discover up-close encounters with free-roaming wildlife in an outdoor enthusiast’s haven. Custer State Park is a 71,000acre vacation paradise located in the southern part of the Black Hills, loaded with picturesque views, wildlife, and family-friendly activities. Whether you decide to snowmobile, ski, snowshoe, or hike—the opportunities for outdoor adventure are endless. As the season changes from autumn to winter and the snow starts falling, the park’s magnificent wildlife becomes easier to spot. The famous buffalo share 24

their home in the park with a wide variety of other wildlife, including elk, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and burros. Keep an eye out while you are exploring, and do not approach—they're wild! To get a better view, take a jeep tour! They operate all year and can be requested even in the dead of winter. For the winter enthusiast, hiking trails are open all year and several guided hikes are offered through the colder months including the “First Day
Hike” held on January 1. Visitors are encouraged to explore the park trails by snowshoe, taking in the wildlife, and maybe even spending some time ice fishing. In February, a group will hike the Lover’s Leap Trail—a threemile loop that has views of the spires and Black Elk Peak. Take a photo with the famous sign reading: “Custer State Park is a place where one can still be an unworried and unregimented individual and wear any old clothes and sit on a log and get his sanity back again.”

Many of the cross country skiing trails begin and end near heated warming shelters. Each shelter has a wood burning stove and accommodates up to 30 people at a time.

In 2016, the park was proud to unveil its new Visitor Center. Throughout the center are displays showcasing the park’s iconic inhabitants—the free-roaming bison, commonly called buffalo. Additionally, the center includes a 100-seat theater where a 20-minute film, narrated by Kevin Costner, immerses visitors into many

THE MAMMOTH SITE NATURAL LANDMARK
Come face-to-face with creatures from thousands of years ago as you visit the in situ (on site) museum exhibits in Hot Springs. More than 26,000 years ago, Ice Age fauna were trapped and died in a spring-fed pond near the southwest edge of Hot Springs. Over the course of the next 350 to 700 years, the hole filled with sediments and mammoth remains. For centuries the bones lay buried—until discovered by chance in 1974. While excavating for a housing development, earth-moving equipment exposed one 26

of South Dakota’s greatest treasures. The Site was found to contain the largest concentration of Columbian and woolly mammoth bones discovered in the world. Fortunately, through the work of local citizens, 14 acres of land now known as The Mammoth Site was preserved as a resource for scientific study and in 1980 the Site added to the list of National Natural Landmarks in the United States.
Today the location is not only an attraction for visitors, it is an indoor working paleontological dig site and Accredited Museum, laboratory, and research facility where paleontologists and volunteers preserve these historic relics. Enclosed and protected by a climate-controlled building, the sinkhole and exhibits attract visitors year-round. The bones are on display as they were discovered for an in situ exhibit.

ELLSWORTH AFB In 1942, Rapid City Air Base (now Ellsworth Air Force Base) was established six miles northeast of the city. LIMITED STAKES When the constitutional amendment allowing limitedstakes gambling in Deadwood was passed, there were only two other places in America where gambling was legal: Nevada and Atlantic City. The law authorizing gambling in Deadwood mandated that
a significant portion of the revenue would be earmarked for historic preservation efforts. The city’s casinos now bring in over $100 million in gross receipts every year, with over $7 million annually funnelled into renovation of the historic buildings and restoration of the city infrastructure.

Step into the world of arts at the Historic Homestake Opera House and take a look into the mining history that created the community at the Homestake Visitor Center. Lead (pronounced leed) is also home to the Sanford Underground Laboratory where many sensitive physics experiments are conducted 4,850 feet below ground. Near Kadoka, to the south as you follow I-90 through western South Dakota, the Badlands appear. Interstate Exit 131 is the east entrance into Badlands National Park and the Visitor Center of Minuteman Missile Site. Wall Drug is where you will find everything from souvenir shops to a giant animated T. Rex and plenty of space for the kids to unwind after a long day on the road.

Standing over 5,112 feet tall over the Belle Fourche River, Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming is an astounding geologic feature to behold. Considered sacred by Northern Plains Indians, this natural site draws thousands of visitors every year.

Stop and visit Dignity, a 50foot tribute to “the courage, perseverance, and wisdom of the Lakota and Dakota culture.” At the Chamberlain rest stop on I-90.
Plains Indians, Sheridan and the surrounding areas are home to historic sites and museums, as well as contemporary Western and Native American art galleries. At Ranchester (11 miles north of Sheridan), take scenic US Highway 14 over the Bighorn Range and through Shell Canyon to historic Cody.
This part of Wyoming is where Buffalo Bill Cody, along with diverse cultures associated with Western life, are celebrated. Vistas are spectacular, and opportunities for recreation and entertainment abound. Cody is also known as the eastern gateway to our nation’s first established National Park in 1872—Yellowstone.

While 90 percent of the Black Hills is in the state of South Dakota, the Black Hills National Forest does continue 10 to 40 miles beyond the South Dakota border into Wyoming. West of Sundance, as you near Moorcroft, look to the north for occasional glimpses of Devils Tower National Monument across the rolling hills and high plains.
