CELEBRATING YOU At Black Hills Bride, we are proud to enter our sixth year of publishing the trusted source for wedding planning in the Black Hills. Everything you need–from the moment you say “yes” to the moment you say “I do”–is right here at your fingertips. Join the community of brides-to-be on our website, blog, Facebook, and Pinterest boards, too. Our first piece of planning advice is to take your time going through these 180 page of checklists, inspiration, and ideas. Enjoy your engagement, and let us help you plan your dream day. When we started planning this issue of Black Hills Bride, we knew we wanted to make some changes. So, we set out to create an issue that would incorporate small, organizational changes, as well as some big changes—like our new Creative Director, John Edwards, who’s moved with his family all the way from London, England, bringing all his experience and expertise. With this issue, we extend special thanks to each of our loyal advertisers who bring our brides the best services and advice in South Dakota—thank you for all of your hard work and dedication! So we raise our glass to all of you—our brides and our vendors—and toast the years we’ve shared and the years we will share in the future. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of such a special time in your life. Cheers! Rick and Lisa DenHerder Publisher & Managing Editor THE COVER BRIDE SHARES, “Our entire wedding day was truly memorable, starting with the beautiful weather for pictures, as well as the downpour of rain before the ceremony. We will always remember Carl and his mom dancing. Most importantly, we will always remember how special it was to have our family and friends all together helping us celebrate the day.” Jessica (Murphy) Collison See her real wedding on page 98.

CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING VENUE

From site to centerpieces, plan a wedding reception to remember with inspiration, organization, vision and imagination.

Creative planning, an organized agenda, and the teamwork of bride, groom, and several key vendors bring to life the most magnificent receptions. Set the stage for a successful celebration with a well thought-out “plan-of-action. Planning experts suggest a bride and groom put the wedding day in perspective by drafting a planof-action that includes: potential ceremony and reception sites, date and time options, estimated number of guests, style, theme and budget. As your vision and expectations develop, continue to perfect your plan-of-action. Selecting a wedding venue should be the first task you take action on. Select locations are often booked one to two years out, and prime dates (Saturdays, afternoons and evenings, May through October) go quickly. Knowing this, once you find your dream site, book it immediately. THE GUEST LIST The greatest factor to effect your budget will be the number of guests invited, and all should fit comfortably within the venue space. Keep in mind, sites have maximum capacities, so your guest count Black Hills Bride.com 13

VENUE will help narrow down your site choices— or your site choice will help narrow down your guest list. PICK A SEASON AND THREE DATES The best suggestion is to start with a season of the year and then pick three dates that work for you, your fiancé, and close family and friends involved in the wedding. By having more than one date in mind, you will be more flexible when it comes to such considerations as venue availability and work schedules. THE RIGHT LOCATION The various forms of venues are endless, ranging from a hotel ballroom with stunning interior design and panache, to a vineyard transformed into a rustic chic setting, and everything in between. The wedding venue you select will no doubt help you decide what areas of the wedding planning you need to focus on next, and even help in the decision-making process about some details. Choosing a venue is a lot like hunting for a house. Having a list of your top desires will save you time. On-Site venues include private clubs, hotels, and restaurants. These locations provide the majority of services needed for a reception: tables, chairs, china, flatware, linens catering, beverages, and serving staff. Off-Site facilities encompass historic estates, wineries, private residences, galleries, event sites and community centers. These

locations offer the use of the facility for one flat fee, providing no other services. All-Inclusive venues offer packages to service the event from A-Z. With this type of venue, you can have your wedding and reception at one location, using the venue’s outdoor space for the ceremony and the ballroom for the reception. Theme Venues include your individual hobbies, interests, and passions into your celebration. Wineries, museums, train stations, and even breweries are all alternative options. Choose locations that tell your love story. If you meet in college, check for use of the facilities. Proposed on the beach; speak with state park representatives to book the site. By selecting a venue within your theme, you create a truly personalized celebration. CONDUCT A PHONE INTERVIEW There are a few initial criteria you can confirm over the phone before doing a site visit. Call to ask these basic questions: Is your preferred date available? Where do their prices per person start? Can they accommodate your guest list? If they fit these initial criteria, make an appointment to tour the reception site. INSPECT THE SITE PERSONALLY It may be love at first sight, but looks are not everything. Meet the staff you will be working with for your wedding and spend ample time touring the entire facility to

ensure that the site’s design, decor, and ambiance complement the style you have envisioned for your wedding. Bring your camera, and of course your copy of this wedding magazine as your guide. You can use the thorough checklist of questions in this section at your appointment. The site’s event coordinators are professionals who

realize that people only plan an event like this once in their lifetime; they won’t be offended with questions. If you are working with a wedding consultant, ask them to accompany you as well. For a formal event, choose a location conducive to a formal occasion. By showcasing the natural attributes of the location you have selected, you will more easily achieve harmony with your decor and the facility. Transforming a room is costly. Working with it will save time and money. MEAL CHOICES Find out if the venue offers an in-house catering service, and includes food you prefer, or if you are required to hire an outside catering company. You will likely have several menu options, and will be able to choose food that suits your needs. Keep in mind the time of day your meal

THE COST When discussing costs, especially regarding food and beverage, make sure you get the price inclusive of tax and gratuity. Rates vary significantly depending on the type of venue, the number of guests and the time of year. All details of your reception should be written in a contract signed by you and the venue representative. Most sites require a deposit, and will need the balance paid at least one week in advance. Remember to coordinate this date with your RSVP date to confirm your guest count. YOUR TIMELINE Have your location secured before hiring

your vendors. If you have your heart set on a particular venue, then start planning one to two years out. If you are flexible about your venue selection and are open to different options, you can plan a wedding in six months. Saturday night weddings and summer holiday weekends are always popular. If you are interested in these dates, book your venue immediately.

A well-planned space and itinerary will help you form a mental image of how your reception will flow. Implement the following tips to ensure all your needs are met. Map it Out to identify where each component of the reception will take place and make a diagram of the room. Include the receiving line, buffet tables, bar, cake table, DJ or musicians, head table, immediate family tables, guest tables, guest book table, and the gift table. Place key elements separate from one another to prevent overcrowding. Have a Plan to guide your guests to the cocktail or reception venue, or make sure there are adequate signs directing them to the proper place.

RECEPTION ESSENTIALS

The Project Manager is a key person and is usually a wedding consultant, your caterer, or the facility manager. They will be responsible for the timing of the cocktail hour, meal service, musician cues, toasts, cake cutting, etc. Best practice says to lay your concerns to rest by confirming all details at least one week in advance.

THE RECEPTION FLOW A common mistake couples make is failing to orchestrate their reception. Timing of the key moments of your reception should be communicated to all your vendors and guests. The critical factor is to keep the event “flowing” and your guests comfortable and happy. After the ceremony your photographer will finish taking photographs, and you will take a limo ride. During this time, serve your guests appetizers and drinks, and have your DJ or musicians play soft background music as everyone waits for your arrival.

chat topics placed at each table is a good way to get your guests to mingle, socialize, and chat while they wait to be served. The best man presents a toast to the newly married couple. Additional speeches and stories can be told during and after dinner. At the planned time, the MC will announce the cake cutting. You and your groom complete the ceremonial cutting of the cake, and the MC will announce the couple’s first dance.

The Master of Ceremonies (MC) announces that dinner will be served soon and asks your guests to be seated. The MC (usually your DJ) introduces the bridal party as they enter the room. Be sure to plan the path between the banquet tables, so you can easily get to your table. The bride’s father makes a short speech, welcomes everyone and thanks everyone for coming. The officiate blesses the meal and the food service begins. Each table, in turn, will move through the buffet line, or will be served by wait staff. Having

The couple’s first dance may be followed by several additional special dances, and then the floor is opened for everyone to dance. The final reception event is the bouquet toss by the bride and garter throw by the groom. Remarks by the bride and groom. Though not necessary some brides and grooms like to take time to thank their parents, guests, and anyone who helped make the day possible. Congratulations! You have just thrown the biggest, and best party of your life.

Finding “the one” can be tricky. Finding the perfect hotel shouldn’t be.

The unity ceremony symbolizes two people coming from their own families to become one new family. Traditionally, the lighting of the unity candle has been used as this symbol, and continues to be a popular option. For a twist on this tradition, here are some suggestions: Cord of Three Strands. The bride and groom braid the gold, purple, and white stands together symbolizing the union of God, husband, and wife. While braiding, someone reads an explanation of the ceremony and the coordinating verse from Ecclesiastes 4:12 that reads, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Sand Ceremony. This consists of two smaller vessels filled with different colored sand being poured into a central vessel so you can see the colors blend together. This is convenient for outdoor ceremonies in lieu of keeping a candle lit. Wine Blend. In this unity ceremony, the bride pours a white wine, while the groom pours a red, making a unique blush wine symbolizing your new family. This can also

be served at your reception. A Box, Wine and Love Letters. This tradition has the couple place a bottle of wine and love letters into a wooden box and nailed shut during the ceremony. The officiate explains, “If and when the marriage gets tough, open the box, have a glass of wine, and read your love letters to each other. This will remind you of your love and commitment to one another.”

ARRANGE FOR YOUR OUT-OFTOWNERS

Before ordering your invitations, make arrangements with a couple hotels where your guests can choose to stay. Most hotels will work with you on a better rate if you are blocking a group of rooms. Include the information and a “book by” date on your invitations. It’s a nice touch to have a welcome bag waiting for your guests when they arrive in their hotel rooms. You may want to include some locally made items, snacks, and drinks. Be sure to include a local tourism publication, maps and written directions to all events that guests are invited to attend. While it’s not necessarily expected, it is a nice gesture to invite guests who have made the journey to your wedding to the rehearsal dinner. For the day of your wedding, have someone local whom guests can contact should questions or needs arise. Hospitality and generosity towards your wedding guests will go a long way to ensure your wedding is a weekend for everyone to remember.

#WEDDING HASHTAG Choosing a hashtag for your celebration allows you to follow the great time your guests had, as well as all the fun and candid photos from the night. Let your creativity shine when creating your wedding hashtag. Is there an inside joke or nickname? Choose something that everyone will remember and keep them smiling. Make sure you let your guests know by creating a sign to display, as well as having your DJ announce it throughout the evening. CREATE YOUR WEDDING HASHTAG In a bride survey, 55% of all weddings have a hashtag for the guests to use, but there’s more to it than just typing out the pound sign. Use these tips to create a successful hashtag: # Start with your names. # Use numbers to set your hashtag apart. # Capitalize the first letter of each word. # Avoid easy misspellings. # Check the hashtag. # Spread the word. # Don’t overthink it. Will you remember your wedding hashtag forever? Definetly. In the end, you will see all the fun everyone had.

YOUR FIRST MEAL TOGETHER Preparing the meal is just the beginning when it comes to catering a wedding. While taste will be your number one decision factor, following closely should be the quality of the meal presentation and service to your guests. Catering a meal requires a considerable amount of time for planning, preparation, serving, and clean up, not to mention, the cost of the food and equipment rentals. Keep in mind, if you are thinking about asking your relatives to help prepare and serve the meal, the time commitment you are asking for will interfere the most with your family’s participation in the reception. For this reason alone, you should strongly consider hiring a professional caterer to take care of the food preparation and service for your wedding reception. Having your celebration catered is one way to assure a fabulous meal for your guests, and no one has to miss the fun.

ON-SITE OPTION OR HIRE YOUR OWN The venue you select will have some impact on the caterer you choose, as some venues require that you use their on-site catering service, or work within their list of preferred vendors. If this is the case, many of your decisions have already been made. You will just select from the options in the Black Hills Bride.com 39

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? What are your favorite foods and what time of day will your meal be served? While most caterers can offer a variety of cuisine, there are those caterers that specialize in barbecue, ethnic cuisine, or vegetarian menus. Use the time of your reception to help narrow down your choices. If the meal will be served earlier in the day, a lighter meal is adequate, while a full meal is more common later in the day.

CATERING SERVICE STYLES One basic catering question is the difference between the service style options. Here is a breakdown of four popular styles. Buffet Style. A buffet usually consists of long tables laden with both hot and cold menu items. Guests make their way down the line with a plate in hand and serve themselves. A benefit to the buffet or food station style of serving food is that it affords the newlyweds more opportunity to mingle and visit with their guests. Plated Service. Plated dinners are served individually to each table by wait staff. The meals are beautifully laid out on the plate and more formal than other options. You may ask guests to select their meal choice as part of their R.S.V.P. Station Service. These serve-yourselfstations and are usually grouped by theme or cuisine, and guests mingle throughout

the room and sample the different dishes. You are able to serve a variety of different foods, and this keeps even the most finicky guest content. Family Style. Waiters bring platters of hot-from-the-oven foods and place them on the table for the guests to share. This is perfect for a more casual style of

CATERING entertaining and is easily coupled with the use of longer tables. There are pros and cons of each style. Your caterer will work with you to determine what is the best match for you. CONSIDER THE EXTRAS Is a beautiful banquet table presentation part of your vision? As you can imagine, the more complex the decorating and presentation of the food is, it increases labor hours, as well, increasing the food quality will result in a higher per person cost for your reception. If your budget is limited, determine your priorities, and spend the bulk of your catering dollars in that area. SPECIAL MEAL REQUESTS The caterer can help you plan for the variations in your guest list and then determine the correct amount of food to order so you do not run out—better to have left overs than to have some guests without food. Discuss any special dietary needs you and your guests have, for example vegetarian, gluten or sugar-free, or food allergies. To avoid disappointment, test the meal you decide upon before confirming it. INTERVIEW AND BOOK THE CATERER Start the interview process and book your caterer early in your planning process. Ask event professionals to refer a caterer who has experience with the quality, style, and organization you are looking for. Complete a contract with the caterer that includes, a listing of the foods selected, services to be provided, and the cost. Know the number of servers included, the number of hours service will be provided, and arrival and departure times. Caterers need a final count at least two weeks in advance. Find out about all deadlines and due dates. Regardless of the meal you choose, a festive event is the goal of every couple. Looking out into the room, and seeing your family and friends who are celebrating with you, is a feast for your eyes.

ASK THE C ATERER

The Basics Do you have my date available? Have you done events at my reception site and can you provide references? Do you have a state license? (the business meets health department standards and has liability insurance) Will you be personally handling the meal service at my wedding? The Food What menu items and style of service are your specialties? Are you willing to include a sentimental family recipe in the menu? Given the style, time, and date of my wedding, what menu items do you suggest? Schedule a tasting of the menu. What is your average cost per-person? Can you prepare kids, vegetarian, or glutenfree menu for just a few of the guests? Can you provide a wedding cake? Do you charge a cutting and serving fee? The Drink Do you provide beverage service? Is a drink included with meal service? Do you have a liquor license? Or do we handle the bar separately? Do you charge a corkage fee If we provide our own wine or liquor? The Business What is the ratio of servers to guests and how will they be dressed? Do you provide or rent linens, dinnerware, tables, chairs, and serving pieces? If so, what color and style of linens, glasses, plates, and accessories are available? What service costs are included? How much time is needed for set-up and clean-up? What deposit amount is required and when is the balance due? What is your cancellation policy? How are gratuities figured? How quickly will we receive a contract? Black Hills Bride.com 47

A SWEET ENDING TO YOUR DAY COMBINING YOUR FAVORITE FLAVORS Wedding cake doesn’t have to be white any more, unless of course it’s your favorite. Doing a taste test as part of your research allows you to confidently decide on what kind of wedding cake you desire. Red velvet cake is popular, as is carrot cake, and the traditional white or chocolate. With the incredible number of flavors and fillings, you can create some pretty spectacular combinations. Once you have decided on the cake flavor, you can begin to think about frosting. As a general rule, there are three types of icing—the traditional butter cream versus cream cheese versus fondant. If you need suggestions for pairing cakes and frostings ask the baker to share their popular combinations.

One focal point of a reception is the cake, and you will want yours to take your guest’s breath away. Choosing a cake starts by breaking the design into several basic categories; this makes the task less stressful–and even fun. In the end you will have a cake that is uniquely your own.

Whether it’s traditional or a modern twist, the cake serves as a focal point at the reception.

CAKES DECORATIVE ASPECTS Pearls, patterns, ribbons, and flowers are great decorations to included into your cake’s design. Find images that demonstrate your ideas. If you want to use fresh flowers, you can use a few as a cake topper or dozens as a cascade. Your cake decorations can be as simple or as lavish as you want, but no matter if you choose traditional or ultramodern–make sure it’s the look that makes you happy! SELECTING THE RIGHT SIZE The number of wedding guests will define the cake size, as well as how many tiers it should have. Ask how many guests can be served per tier, figuring on one slice per guest. Wedding cakes also include an additional anniversary tier. Adding sheet cakes is an economical option and allows you to serve several flavors.

THE SHAPE Classic round, tiered cakes work well at more formal weddings; square cakes suit sleek, contemporary affairs; and artsy topsy-turvy designs are perfect at fun, informal parties. PUT A TOPPER ON IT Many couples select a traditional topper with a formal looking bride and groom or initials. Others choose a more light-hearted approach with a topper made to mimic the couple’s hobbies or personalities. Whichever style is used you’ll have a great keepsake and conversation piece to use in your home. GROOM’S CAKE Some brides choose to surprise their groom with a themed cake incorporating one of his obsessions; produce a fish-shaped cake, one with a sports theme, or even one with an eight-point buck on it get creative!

C AKE TERMS TO KNOW: THE DECORATIONS Basket Weave: Results in a cake that resembles a wicker basket. Swiss Dotted: Dots that look like beads are placed randomly over the cake. Piping: A pastry bag and tip are used to make lines on the cake. THE SHAPE Tier: Each level of the cake. Layer: A horizontal piece of the cake. One tier is often made up of two or more layers joined together with a filling. Round: The traditional circular cake. Square: A box shape that gives the baker cleaner, more geometric lines to work with. Hexagon: A cake with six-sides. Scalloped: The edges are curved to resemble

the petals of a flower. Generally this shape is used for casual weddings such as garden weddings, tea and brunch weddings. Molded: The cake is shaped to resemble a familiar object. These are most commonly used for the groom’s cake. THE FROSTING AND FILLING Buttercream: A lasting wedding favorite made from butter, cream, and eggs. Its soft texture does not lend itself well to outdoor weddings. Ganache: A cream sauce made from butter and chocolate. It can be used as a frosting or a filling, but melts quickly in warmer temperatures. Fondant: A versatile, sugary dough that hardens over time. It can be given a satin sheen and is very popular for the limitless decorating possibilities.

Cupcake towers and cake truffles are popular with couples who are looking for a nontraditional wedding dessert. The cake will not need to be sliced and served as your guests can help themselves. These are also

a great way to serve several flavors. No utensils will be needed to indulge in these beautifully decorated treats. By categorizing the steps the process will be a manageable task and go smoothly. Surely you will have nothing short of an amazing wedding cake, delightful to the eyes and delectable to the taste buds.

WEDDING DAY FASHION One of the most exciting, fun, and sometimes overwhelming parts of your wedding planning experience is shopping for your wedding day apparel. With the right direction, you will find the perfect wedding gown with ease and confidence. Whatever your style, there is a dress out there waiting for you.

LEGACY

WHEN TO START Begin the search for your gown, accessories, and jewelry up to nine months before the wedding day to give ample time to avoid rush-order fees. Some dress designers require six months to produce a gown; others may be longer or even quicker, so be sure to ask. Order early to allow sufficient time for your gown to be received, altered, and steamed.

Keep with classic looks or be fashion forward. With direction you will find your perfect wedding gown with ease and confidence.

DO YOUR RESEARCH When you think about the style of dress you have always envisioned going down the aisle in, how do you describe it? If you need help, become familiar with the terms for specialty fabrics and gown silhouettes to help you communicate the details of what you want. The staff at local bridal salons can help get you started trying styles on right away. These local professionals know their inventory and are there to assist you in this important dress purchase. It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes. GOWN SILHOUETTE

When you start looking for a wedding dress, you may discover the vocabulary is a little overwhelming. There are many different options to choose from. If you feel a bit confused become familiar with these terms you’ll hear in the bridal salon. The silhouette of a wedding dress refers to its overall shape and can be thought of in five basic categories. Naturally, your style choice will be based on your body shape—and the parts you want to accentuate will ultimately determine what style you choose. A-line: This style has a fitted bodice that gradually tapers into a wider, more flared skirt. This look highlights the narrowness of the midsection and floats away from the hips and thighs. It is designed to flatter nearly all body types.

Ball Gown: This dress is the traditional Cinderella dress. This look will have a fitted bodice that flares to a full skirt. Ball gown dresses are appropriate for formal weddings and look great on women with pear-shaped bodies. Dreaming of a princess wedding? This is the look for you!

Mermaid: A trumpet-style dress that has a very fitted bodice then just above the knee, flares out like a tail of a mermaid into a dramatic train. This mermaid wedding dress style is ideal for brides who want to emphasize their curves.

Empire Waist: These dresses have a fitted bodice that ends just below the bust and free flowing skirts that help lengthen the body’s appearance. If you want to elongate your torso this is the style for you!

Sheath: These sleek and sophisticated column dresses are form-fitting from top to bottom and have no waist. The style either hugs the natural curves of the body, or falls in a straight line from the shoulders to the hemline. If you are going for a romantic look and want to accentuate your natural curves, this is a great option for you!

FOR THE GROOM A groom’s options of attire may be more limited than those of his lovely bride’s, but whatever the degree of formality or style of the wedding, these few key points will help when ordering formalwear. FOUR BASIC STYLE CATEGORIES Formalwear can be separated into four styles: very formal, formal, semiformal, and informal. The time of your ceremony will strongly influence the level of formality, in turn influencing the attire. Other considerations such as color and theme will also play a part in the selection. GIVE YOURSELF THREE MONTHS Formalwear should be reserved or purchased at least three months in advance and all measurements taken at least three weeks prior to the wedding to allow plenty of time for alterations. If your groomsmen live in different parts of the country, have them measured by a local tailor and forwarded to your store. GROOMS HAVE OPTIONS TOO The groom, like the bride, has the option of purchasing his wedding day attire or having it tailor made. If his work calls for it, purchasing a tux or a suit is a good investment. Rented formal wear usually includes a jacket, vest, shirt, neckwear, cufflinks, pants and shoes. ONE WAY TO SHINE You may want to set yourself apart with a different vest and tie color and match the groomsmen vest and tie with the bridesmaids’ dresses. Choosing patterned, or bright socks is a fun way many grooms choose to show off their personality. Remember to recognize the importance of the day, and know that there are options to fit your style. 60 Black Hills Bride.com

HIS CHECKLIST Nine months before the wedding Ask your guys! Pick your best man, other groomsmen, and ushers. Make a list of all your guys that will need outfits for the big day. Include relatives and other important fellas who need to fit into the overall look of your party. Try on tuxes and suites. Let your guys know when and where they need to go to get fitted. Six months before the wedding Plan your honeymoon. If you will be traveling abroad, take care of all the legal arrangements. Send a note, message, or email to check in with your guys. One month before the wedding Check in with your guys again, to encourage all of them to get in for their fittings and keep them in the know on wedding weekend happenings. Purchase groom’s gifts to say thank you. Consider cuff links, glasses, or their favorite drinks. It is a nice touch to have the gifts engraved with their names and your wedding date. Seven days before the wedding Check in with your guys. Did everyone get their fittings done? Does anyone have questions? Now is the time to get those last minute details figured out. Everyone looks and feels their best with a fresh haircut. Treat yourself to an upscale haircut for your big day. Two days before the wedding Try on everything one last time to ensure the proper fit. Pack for the honeymoon. On your wedding day Remember the rings and give them to the person of your choice for safe keeping. Congratulations, you made it!

ALL EYES ON YOU

LEGACY

As you take that first step down the aisle towards the man of your dreams, every eye in the house will be fixed on you. As you prepare for what may be the single most important and memorable day of your life, you’ll want to consider these beauty enhancement options: skin and body care routines, slimming and toning plans, a picture-perfect makeover and hair style, facials, massages and body treatments, tanning, and spa manicures and pedicures.

You’re the bride and the center of it all at your wedding. Look your best with a little preparation pre-celebration.

CARING FOR YOUR SKIN Nothing is more beautiful than the natural glow of happiness that comes from within a bride on her wedding day. To improve your glow, schedule a series of facials, with your last one no later than two weeks before the big day. Begin to implement a daily skin care routine of three basic steps: cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize to care for your facial skin. You can then add any special needs products to help repair and rejuvenate your skin. Exfoliate your body weekly to achieve a healthy shine, paying special attention to the parts of your skin that will be exposed when you are in your dress. Use body cream with sunscreen to smooth, moisten, and protect the skin. Black Hills Bride.com 63

FITNESS AND BRIDAL BOOT CAMP You know the drill: a combination of a reasonable but restricted diet combined with both weight-bearing and fat-burning exercises will yield results. Whether you want to tone up and lose 20 pounds or even just ten, this will take some time, so start six months to one year prior to your wedding. If you are exercising and eating right but just not seeing the results you want, there are businesses that specialize in slimming, detoxifying, and toning options to give a boost to any weight loss program you use.

natural look. Apply makeup lighter for an everyday look and heavier for a more dramatic look for photographs. Keep in mind that your cheeks will be flushed all night, and with overdone blush you will look too red in person and in pictures. Inevitably a few tears will be shed, so use waterproof mascara. Take a picture of your new look at the same time of day as your wedding, and remember flash photography is less forgiving than a mirror. Get your makeover done early so you can use your new look and easily recreate it on your wedding day. WEDDING DAY HAIRSTYLE When meeting with your stylist, bring a photo of the hairstyle you would like to have done, but remain flexible. Stick to a Program When you get the right kind of program for you, then stick to it and keep a check on the progress. Don’t take on too many changes at once—you want the results to last your lifetime. Don’t Starve, Just Eat Right You don’t have to starve when it comes to your eating patterns. Eat all the healthy foods; including grains, meats, vegetables and fruits; and not to mention the natural fats. Don’t skip meals; just eat right and in the right quantity. Keep Moving Don’t get glued to the couch! Get up and move. Join a gym or start walking, any kind of activity is beneficial. Make excersise a priority in your daily routine and enjoy it to the fullest. Whether you want to lose ten or thirty pounds, this will take some time, so start six months to one year prior to your wedding.

BEAUTY the same, so your entire wedding party has a consistent, complimentary look. Wearing your hair in a traditional updo shows off the neckline and shoulders, and is always flattering. On the other hand, wear your hair down to show off your tresses. Schedule a trial run of your style several weeks prior to the wedding and remember to bring your veil and any other hair accessories. Consider the wedding day schedule and set your hair appointment accordingly. Wear a button-up shirt to protect your style when you change into your dress. You will need to allow enough time for make up application after your hair is complete and before you put on your dress. DE-STRESS WITH A MASSAGE For your sanity, take time to relieve any stress you may be encountering. In the months prior to your wedding, think of

In the weeks leading up to the big day, consider a full service spa package including a facial, body polish, waxing, spa pedicure, and a manicure. You deserve to be pampered. A LITTLE COLOR A sun-kissed tan looks stunning against a white wedding gown. If your skin has the ability to tan, look for a salon that offers skin profiling to help determine the best tanning unit, tanning lotion to use, and how many minutes to tan in each session. You will want to build a base tan and remember, the number one rule is never, ever burn. If you have type 1 skin (white, very fair, freckles, always burns, never tans) then spray tanning is an excellent choice. BEAUTY appearance on the surface of the skin. The development of color takes anywhere from two to four hours and usually lasts five to seven days, but can vary. To ensure you are pleased with the results do a practice spray tan at least two weeks prior to your wedding day. For best results, in is recommended that you moisturize twice a day. MANICURED NAILS Your hands will be on stage for the entire day—signing the certificate, showing off your rings, shaking hands—you will want them looking pretty, polished and feminine. Painting your nails a dark color such as burgundy, even if that is your wedding color, may make you cringe when you look back at your pictures. Do yourself a favor and choose a pretty pale pink or nude for your wedding day manicure. Use the burgundy on your toes.

SIMPLE ADVICE • Avoid any drastic skin care treatments and continue to use your regular hair products and makeup for at least one month prior to your wedding date to reduce the risk of redness or even worse, an allergic reaction a week before your wedding. • Experiment with different hairstyles in the weeks leading up to your big day, to help you choose the one you are most comfortable with. Tip: you don’t want to look back at your photographs in two years and wonder, “who is that?” • Avoid trying trendy, new hair colors or cuts in the months leading up to the wedding and then being disappointed in it, leaving you no time to grow it out. • Consult a professional to learn what flatters your features. Remember, your fiancé is expecting to see the woman he knows and loves walking down the aisle.

BOUQUETS & ARRANGEMENTS

JESSICA SIMONS PHOTOGRAPHY

Flowers take your event to the next level. They add bright pops of color, show off your personality, showcase your dress, and bring the theme together. Before you set up a meeting with the floral designer, have these important details pinned down to have a productive meeting.

Allow your personality to shine through the floral designs you choose for your bouquet, wedding party, and reception dĂŠcor.

WEDDING SIZE AND BUDGET You will want to know how many bouquets and boutonnieres are needed for the bridal party, plus how many table arrangements you will need for guest seating. Having these counts will help you determine the floral budget. If you have no idea how to come up with a budget for flowers, start out with 10% of the overall budget. You can always allocate more if you are using all flowers for your aisles and centerpieces. With that figure, your floral designer can guide you towards the flowers and designs that will help you stay within or close to that amount. Keep in mind that most flowers can be ordered any time of year, but flowers and greenery that are in season will generally be less expensive. Black Hills Bride.com 75

FLOWERS KNOW YOUR STYLE Prepare for the consultation by listing your color palette and other special touches like monograms, hobbies, and themes you

want to incorporate into your flowers. The atmosphere of the ceremony venue may have a big impact on your floral design {rustic, modern, elegant, etc.}

BOUQUET TERMS TO KNOW: Nosegay: This is a hand-held bouquet of fragrant flowers and foliage designed as a small bouquet. Hand-Tied: A larger bouquet of assorted flowers in a loosely gathered design. The stems can be wrapped, embellished or left natural. Pageant/Arm/Presentation: Long-stemmed flowers the bride carries cradled in her arm. Posy or Tussie-Mussie: Similar to nosegay, but smaller and more compact. Perfect for bridesmaids, and a great alternative to the mother’s corsage.

Pomander: A bloom-covered ball that is usually four to six inches in diameter and suspended from a ribbon. Toss Bouquet: Solely made for the bouquet toss. Hint: have one that breaks apart into three when thrown (Break-away or Fortune Toss), a nice surprise for the single ladies as tradition says the woman who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry. Remembrance: Done in memory of a lost loved one or family member who may not be able to attend the wedding.

Check to see if your venue allows flower petals to be dropped, if candles are permitted, etc.

OTHER BOUQUET CONSIDERATIONS Complement your dress, personality and proportions when choosing your bridal bouquet. Here are some basic considerations to factor in before making your final choice: Color Match. All-white bouquets are the most traditional choice for brides, while the use of color in a bridal bouquet is a beautiful way to express individual personality. Consider using accent flowers in your wedding colors or something bright and fun. Gown Style. Consider the scale of your gown. A common rule is, the bigger the gown, the bigger the bouquet. A simple sheath gown wouldn’t be able to hold its own against an overflowing cascade bouquet, however, a ball gown would. Consider any embellishments on the front of the dress and don’t obscure the beautiful beading or lace with a large bouquet. When you meet with your floral designer,

FLOWER TYPES AND VISUAL AIDS Are there any specific flowers or a design you know you like and just have to have? Bring in photos of the styles you like to help communicate your ideas. Not that you want an exact replica, but you may love one for the shape of the bouquet, another for the type of flowers or the elements used, and yet another one for the color scheme that was used. Flowers are seasonal, so keep in mind what you want may not necessarily be available or cost effective. Lastly, it’s a good idea to note any flower allergies that you or your groom might have and share them with the floral designer to avoid any untimely sneezes.

DESCRIPTIVE WORDS Along with the photos, decide a few descriptive words to help express the style you have in mind. Try to use meaningful words like formal, vintage, country, rustic, casual, fun, glitz and glam, etc., while avoiding basic words like elegant or simple, unless that is really what you mean. Think about how you would describe your dress, venues, wedding theme, etc. when you come up with your descriptive words.

bring a photo of your dress, and they will offer suggestions for the style and shape of bouquet that’s right for you. THE CONSULTATION Thoroughly discuss your ideas, share your photos and descriptive words, and

then give creative control and trust to your florist. A good florist thrives on having the blessing of doing what is best for the look of the arrangement. Keep in mind they are working with a natural product and often enough, floral products come in different colors, sizes and shapes than planned. Be as flexible as possible and believe they have the best intentions at heart. At the end of the consultation or shortly thereafter you should receive a quote of costs. This is not set in stone and nothing is ordered until you contract with them, so if you want to expand and make something greater let your florist know. Although your flowers will not need to be ordered until a few months before your wedding date, six months is not too soon to choose your floral vendor and get on their schedule, no matter the size or complexity of your floral designs.

CREATIVE DETAILS

HENRY ROY PHOTOGRAPHY

Your wedding is full of the little things—the dates, the deadlines, the details. Being organized can be a big task, but while you plan your wedding, you will be meeting with professionals who can help you realize your dream. From the theme and design to the venues and vows, the little details are what make your wedding sparkle and shine. Visit with your vendors to make your day the best it can be.

The details matter in wedding planning. Create your perfect celebration by being organized and utilizing the help of the pros.

NAME YOUR STYLE AND THEME A theme is usually a certain style such as “vintage glam,” “rustic chic,” or “modern simplistic”—the words that sum up the overall look and feel of the day. It is important to choose your colors, style, and theme before you get started as it extends to every element of the wedding—the room décor, the centerpieces, the stationery, the flowers, the food, the cake, the entertainment and even the dress. Be consistent in your choices to help you avoid a muddled look. YOU IMAGINE IT…THEY CREATE IT Amazingly decorated weddings require creative talent, many hours, and an extensive inventory of items. Hiring a professional to design and decorate is a convenient solution, as well as a wise investment. Many brides will underestimate what is involved in Black Hills Bride.com 83

the decorating process—the time researching and creating the vision, gathering the items, setting them up and then tearing them down, not to mention the cost of all of the items— and then the hassle of getting rid of them afterwards. Decorating professionals will help you avoid the frustration of producing your dream wedding on your own. Don’t choose a wedding decorator on price alone— consult with them to understand all that is included in their service. Ask to see samples of their past work and what they can custom create for you. HIRE A COORDINATOR You may pride yourself in being organized and creative, but when it’s time to walk down the aisle, all you will really want is to feel the love—not the stress. If your life is already busy, avoid the pressure and hire a planner, you will gain valuable access to their knowledge and experience, as well as their vast contacts and connections. An experienced planner will work within your budget, recommend reputable vendors, negotiate contracts, book vendors, and the list goes on. Many planners offer different levels of service for you to choose from, ranging from full service, start-to-finish management, to basic, month-of, or day-of coordinating. Hiring a professional wedding consultant often makes the difference between truly enjoying the celebration and having it blow by in a blur of details.

RENT THE SCENE Some ceremony and reception sites will require that you rent equipment such as tables and chairs, sound and lighting equipment, tents, and more from an outside source. These event rentals can turn any setting into something spectacular so you can have the wedding of your dreams without the major expense of purchasing. When you meet with the rental provider, have a guest count estimate for the quantity of items you will need to reserve. At this time, set tentative delivery, set-up, and return times and expect to place a deposit for the rental of certain pieces. A decorating rental business will also have a wide section of accessories to rent including arches, candelabra, chair covers, and aisle runners. They also offer a variety of colors and styles of linens, china, glassware and serving pieces. Remember

A MEANINGFUL CEREMONY Aesthetics are not the only preparation that needs to be done for your wedding. Enlist the help of an experienced professional to help you plan the perfect ceremony that reflects your beliefs, relationship, and dreams for your future. GET IT IN WRITING Once you have decided to work with a particular wedding vendor, sign a detailed, written contract. Read over the contract (several times if necessary) so you are aware of your responsibilities and your vendor’s duties for your wedding day. Reconfirm your arrangements several weeks before your wedding, especially for services that

ALTERNATIVES TO TOSSING RICE The classical rainfall of rice is a fun and happy way to wish the couple many happy years to come. However, the following are a couple ideas for those wanting to make their wedding unique: Rose petals are a great alternative to rice. When thrown into the air, the colorful petals will gently shower the newlyweds. Sparklers are an affordable alternative that will light up the night. They photograph well and add a bright pop to your exit. Balloons filled with helium go straight up in the sky for a whimsical effect. They can be personalized with the names of the newlyweds for a personal touch.

Most people associate weddings with champagne; its sparkling bubbles are the customary choice for toasts. But wines—both reds and whites—should be taken into consideration when creating the perfect meal. Look for at least one red wine and one white to serve at your celebration. Conventional wisdom says that whites go best with chicken and fish, and reds with meats. Most venues offer bar service with a variety of spirits and beer options. Providing beer on tap for your guests is an acceptable alternative to an open bar. This can be a perfect compromise for both your guests and your wallet.

There are tasty ways to add nonalcoholic drinks to your special day, too. Java lovers who want a fun and unique way to celebrate can set up a coffee bar with flavors and toppings. For another unique idea, add a smoothie bar for guests to create their own beverage. Order personalized cups to double as wedding favors.

GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR GUESTBOOK You will want to remember your wedding day forever, especially the special people with who you have shared it. Unique sign-in ideas are sure to impress your guests, so don’t be surprised if most of the comments in your guestbook are about the guestbook itself ! Gone are the days of feathered pens. When you choose to go a creative route with your guestbook it can be used as decoration in your home. From thumbprint trees, to signature wine corks, the possibilities are endless. Forget the book, let your personality show and have fun choosing a way to cherish the memories of your special day.

Thumbprint guestbook trees are a huge trend right now. The concept: start with branches drawn on the paper, and your guests use washable ink to put down their thumbprints as the leaves. Then, your guests sign by their prints. You can frame your new piece of artwork to display in your home.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN When you’re planning your wedding, try adding a unique flair by having a photo booth at the reception. Photo booths add an instant entertainment option for your guests and wedding party—both young and old. As soon as the curtain closes, the personalities of those on the inside come to life. This provides unique entertainment and a fun keepsake that both you and your guests can laugh at and enjoy for years to come. Guests typically get to keep a copy of the photo strip they created. Some couples choose to use this memento as a unique wedding favor for their guests to provide lasting memories for everyone.

94 Black Hills Bride.com

Create a unique guest book and arrange the photo into a scrapbook. Alongside your guests’ photo, they get to write a personal note to the couple, creating a great keepsake for you and something fun for them.

WHAT TO ASK WHEN RESERVING A PHOTO BOOTH:

Is the booth big enough for multiple people? Can you set up outdoors? How long does set up take? How many hours are included in the fee? Do you provide an attendant? What props and costumes are provided? Can I provide my own props? Do you provide a DVD of the images? What is the payment schedule?

SERVICES Having props available will add to the fun and excitement of your guests’ photo booth experience. Wigs, hats, glasses, outrageous jewelry, and even fake mustaches are just a few ideas of props to have available for your guests use. Another idea couples use is to have chalkboards or whiteboards available for their guests to

add messages to their photos. If you are ready to step outside the box, or rather into one, then this is a great idea for your wedding reception entertainment. A photo booth is an amazingly fun way to ensure your guests, young and old, will walk away from your event with a smile on their face and a memory of the night.

Close your eyes and picture your first dance with your new husband. Are you stepping on his toes? Is he stepping on yours? If so, perhaps wedding dance lessons are a good idea for you. Dancing together is one of the romances of marriage. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the skills to dance together for a lifetime? If you decide to take dance lessons, you will want to start fairly far in advance. Dance instructors recommend beginning four to six months prior to your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to learn your moves and practice them. Be patient with each other as you go through this, and let your instructor do the teaching. Things will go much more smoothly if you do not waste time arguing. When you are looking for an instructor, you want to find someone who will start with the basics. It is very important to learn the essential elements of dance before you move into the fancy footwork. A good instructor will demonstrate to you how to lead or follow, as well as teaching you the steps. Private lessons are a great idea when you are starting out. This allows your instructor to focus on the two of you and give you personalized instruction and correction.

LASTING MEMORIES STUDIO

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

You will both want to wear shoes to your lessons that are similar to the ones you will be wearing at your reception. As you get closer to your event, you should even wear the actual shoes to practice in. This will give you the “feel” of them, as well as helping you break them in. You do not want sore feet on your wedding night! If you already have a “First Song” picked out, make sure to bring it along to give to your instructor. This will allow him or her to teach you some choreography to go along with it. Taking the time to learn to dance is a wonderful gift you and your future spouse can give each other. Feeling confident and poised when you are on the dance floor for your very first dance together will be a wonderful memory you can both cherish forever.

PHOTOGRAPHY candid and spontaneous images that convey the genuine emotion of your day as it naturally unfolds. You will end up with a wide array of shots and captured moments, some you may not have even witnessed, and they will serve as a record of the great time your guests had at your wedding. Traditional, formal photography refers to the typical posed pictures. These usually consist of the wedding party, the couples’ families, the shots of the bridesmaids with their bouquets, the groom with his parents, the happy couple gazing into each other’s eyes, etc. In general, most photographers take both styles. Be clear if you prefer more of one type. Be sure to request traditional family portraits. Getting everyone together at one time can be hard, so your wedding is a great place to capture those few-andfar-between family photos.

CREATE A SCHEDULE

Your photographer can help you establish a wedding day schedule, taking into account your photograph goals, as well as your desire to have fun. Instead of having the wedding party and family members milling around for several hours, give them the schedule showing when they need to be there. Remember to schedule alone time to reflect on the commitment you just made to each other. Once the wedding gets started there is no stopping it. Most photographers agree, if the shot is not scheduled, it may not happen. You cannot go back to get the photographs you miss and wished you had, so confidence in, and communication with your photographer is key.

THE FIRST LOOK

There is only one moment when the groom sees his bride for the first time, and then it’s over. Have you thought about what you are going to do? There is no wrong answer, and photographers agree that there are pros and cons to either way. Some couples feel it is less romantic when their eyes meet for the first time, with the eyes of all their guests on them. Others say, no matter where they see each other, it is a wonderfully romantic moment. Choosing to have your photograph taken with each other before the ceremony gives you a more private moment, and a longer time to be with just each other. It is the most important day of your lives, and it is powerful when you see each

other for the first time. It is an important and emotional moment you will want to remember forever. Whether you choose before the ceremony, or after, set time in the schedule to capture those genuine moments. Go ahead and cry, kiss, and admire each other, it’s your time together.

Your photographer cannot be in more than one place at a time; on a wedding day they get pulled in many different directions. To cover all the angles consider the package that includes a second photographer. At every stage of the day, it’s wonderful to have two different perspectives of everything that happens. While one is photographing the bride throwing her bouquet, the second shooter can focus on all the ladies diving for it. Who wouldn’t want both of those photos? While one is taking family photos, the other can go photograph the details and your guests at the reception. An extra photographer provides backup to capture all of the moments constantly happening at weddings—the family members who haven’t seen each other in years sharing a laugh, little kids being little kids, hugs, smiles, and tears. They happen all night long, and they can’t all be caught on film, but with two photographers around, the odds are pretty good that the big ones won’t be missed. Second shooters are also there to help attend to details, like a family member wearing sunglasses in the family portrait,

or a groomsman who’s got a flask, a phone and a key chain stuffed in his pockets during the posed shots with the grooms. If a second shooter is in your budget, strongly consider it. Think of it this way—you will never regret hiring them, but there is a chance you may regret not taking the opportunity available to you.

BECOMING A MRS. Changing your name is one of the first things you will have to do after your wedding. No matter if you take your husband’s last name or choose to hyphenate your name, you will have to inform the government and companies with which you do business of your legal name change. Before you begin the process, you will need a notarized copy of the marriage license. Call the clerk’s office where the license was filed for details on how to get a copy. Keep in mind there will be a fee. When you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to change your driver’s license, bring the notarized copy of your marriage license, an identity document,

such as your birth certificate, your social security card or last year’s W-2 form. You will also need two documents to prove your local, residential address. To update your Social Security card you will find the application available at the Social Security Administration’s website, or at the local office. You will keep your same number—only your name will get updated. Your bank accounts, bills, and insurance should happen easier. Contact each to inform them of your name and address change. Some will just require a phone call, while others may ask for documents. If you are going on a honeymoon right after your wedding you should not change your name before leaving. Your new name has to match all travel documents, most importantly, your passport—processing name changes on passports generally takes anywhere from four to six weeks.

When you book your photographer, schedule an engagement session to spend some additional time getting to know him or her. You may consider skipping this step, or think that just having a friend take your engagement pictures is good enough, but you will be thankful for what you gain by using your day-of photographer. The engagement session gives you and your fiancĂŠ a chance to get to know your photographer and how he or she interacts with you before the wedding day. You will be more comfortable the day of the wedding knowing that all of your personalities blend. Having pictures taken can be uncomfortable for a lot of people;

engagement sessions can ease any tension and anxiety. Your photographer will get to know the two of you; will find out if your eyes blink a lot; if you need help in some posed shots (what do I do with my hands? should I look at you? look away?); discover

the angles that look best for your facial expressions. This session will save time when creating a “timeless portraiture” on your wedding day. The session offers added time with your photographer and a unique opportunity to peek into the window of your personalities. Have a session that highlights your favorite thing to do together. Be creative, go do something you love, and bring your photographer along with you. Couples have included horseback riding, hiking, or a hole of golf in their session to show who they are together.

TIPS FOR A GREAT SESSION Share your ideas. Talk to your photographer about locations you would like to go to, and your ideas. Maybe you would love to have more candid pictures taken in a coffee shop. The better you communicate about what you are looking for in your pictures, the more likely you’ll get it. Look Amazing. Bring several outfits to choose the clothes that go best with each background. It is important for your clothes to complement and look good next to each other, but try to avoid looking like twins. Solids are great and look good next to almost any backdrop.

Have Fun. Your engagement session should be stress-free and relaxed. It is an experience to enjoy together. Bring Props. Bringing your own fun props will give you something to do, and make your photos unique to you as a couple. When choosing your props think of your style, the location of your shoot, your clothing changes, and your wedding theme. You will want everything to flow nicely. TIP: Use your photos for engagement announcements, wedding invitations, or to decorate the guest book and reception tables.

READINGS

Many couples choose to have a scripture passage read at their ceremony. Here are two sample verses: “But ‘God made them male and female’ from the beginning of creation. ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.” Mark 10:6–9 (NLT) “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Cor. 13:4–7a (NIV)

DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING

Get a clear visual idea of your wedding by verbally expressing what type of theme you would like. Try to capture the mood you want for your wedding. For example, if you want a relaxed outdoor wedding, brainstorm all the words related to that one broad term. Then, think of words you want your wedding guests to use to describe the day. Once you have a collection of words and ideas, you can move toward putting together an inspiration board. Having a word bank accessible will help you keep your vision alive through the various planning stages.

VIDEOGRAPHY

MOMENTS ON SCREEN Videography is an art that uses professional grade cameras, software, computers, and sound equipment to capture your event and puts it on DVD so your story can be retold for years to come. A video will capture every important moment that photographs can often miss. Still photography can’t always capture the fluid movement of the bride making her way down the aisle or the trembling of the groom’s hands as he sees her for the first time, the way her parent’s hug her before she steps up to the alter, the emotion he shows as he sings to his bride, the funny way she spills her sand over the edge of the vase. Videographers are professional storytellers, so you will want to make sure that they will capture every part of your story that you want to be told. You and your fiancé might want to consider having your videographer create a short clip of how you met and fell in love to show at your rehearsal dinner and reception. You will need to create a script or interview questions for your videographer to ask you as they film your clip. You will need to practice being interviewed and what you want to say, so that you are comfortable in front of the camera. Having a video at your event is a fun way for members of your new family and friends to get to know you as a couple, if they haven’t had the chance yet.

Be sure to budget for a professional videographer. You’ll have great food and drinks, a wonderful venue, and lots of other wedding memories, but if you don’t budget video into the mix, in the future, you will miss having it. You will miss hearing your voices and seeing the emotion on your faces from your wedding day. You will miss the sway of your first dance as Mr. and Mrs. Video is the only way to capture those things. Hiring a professional will ensure that your wedding video will be worth sharing time and time again.

WHAT TO ASK

W hat storytelling approach will you use to shoot the video? Ask to see examples of their work. Will this fit you as a couple? H ave they worked with your photographer before? How will they coordinate? H ave they ever shot a wedding at your ceremony/reception site before? Ask to see the video. W ill the videographer you are interviewing be the same one that films your wedding?

You spend months making sure every little detail of your wedding goes exactly the way you dreamed it would. You stress, and plan, and now it’s time for a little fun. You want your guests to dance and have fun. You want your introductions, your first dance, and all of your special moments to be unforgettable. You want your entire day to be uniquely yours, and not a generic production. Music sets the tone from the wedding ceremony to the last dance. It heightens emotions, creates atmosphere, fills awkward silences, and gets guests to dance. Work closely with your disc jockey (DJ) to ensure your celebration is memorable by following these tips:

You’re married and now it’s time to celebrate. Set up the evening with music and lights for an evening to remember.

PLAYLIST VARIETY After all of the formality of the ceremony, you and your guests are ready to relax and get the party started! Your choice of music should be enjoyable for everyone at your reception, both older and younger guests. Consider playing a variety of music that is appropriate for the various segments of your reception. Be sure to discuss the volume level and genre of music that you want Black Hills Bride.com 133

ENTERTAIN ability to get guests involved at a wedding reception, so ask for referrals. ON THE MIC You want a DJ for the wedding reception entertainment who has the ability to go with the flow. If you picked a first song months ago, but on the way to the wedding you heard a more perfect song on the radio, can they change your first dance with this little notice? Most DJs have a ton of popular music in their book of albums and can accommodate your change. If your DJ acts as master of ceremony, discuss their level of involvement, and work closely with them in planning, to keep your reception on schedule. DETAILS It’s a good idea for your band or DJ to contact the reception site to discuss specifics

and avoid potential disasters. Your reception venue may have time or volume level restrictions, and limited electrical usage. Address these issues before your wedding. Professional DJs and musicians are exactly that...professionals. They are knowledgeable, creative and will have professional-level equipment, with a backup system available to avoid the chance that your reception would be without music. SCHEDULE AN INTERVIEW Have a phone interview with them first to determine if they are available on your wedding date. Ask about their experience level, their equipment quality, and if they have a back up system. Determine the variety and versatility of their song list, the cost of their services, amount of the deposit, and the due date for the final payment. When you have all of this information

LIGHTING THE NIGHT Your ceremony or reception site may need a little (or a lot of) help to give it the look that will take your guest’s breath away. Lighting will enhance the beauty of your event design and transform your space into a unique and flattering environment. Ask your wedding consultant, venue, or DJ if they offer this service. Light decorating is an art form and an experienced professional will know where to place the lights to create the effect you are looking for. They can transform a room and make it magical by using personalized monograms, uplighting, lighted backdrops, and so much more. Opt for colors that accent skin tones and consider using softer

lighting during dinner, and darker shades during your dance. These subtle changes can smooth the transitions between cocktail hours, dinner, and dancing. Visit the site at the time of your event. Pay attention to where you can add some much needed light to improve the space. See if your venue has dimmers and if the lighting can be adjusted to the right brightness. Make sure your venue has enough power to handle extra lighting. Blow a fuse, and it is lights out! Schedule a time to visit the venue to work out the technical details. Items such as windows and where the house lighting is located will be big factors in how your room will be lit. Adding lighting to your event will take it from ordinary to extraordinary. MUSICIAN FOR HIRE ENTERTAIN THE KIDS Because a wedding is typically a “grown up” affair, and there is usually time spend by your guests waiting for you to arrive, you will need to get creative to keep your young guests entertained at the reception. If your guest list consists of a lot of children, create a party within a party just for the kids. At an outdoor location you can set up yard games such as beanbag toss and yard golf, it’s so much fun the adults just might join in. Offer kid-style favors such as an activity booklet with word search, tictac-toe and coloring pages to keep them occupied at the dinner table. Add a few experienced babysitters in the room next door and parents and kids alike will rave about how much fun the reception was.

Live music at a wedding celebration is a great touch that can really personalize your ceremony and reception. Musical styles vary, so choose a performer that will best suit your occasion. Brass instruments, string performers and guitars are classical choices and bring a more traditional sound to the ceremony. Vocalists and small singing groups are another great option for the musical sound of your wedding. Most musicians bring what they need to perform with them. They will simply need a place to sit at your venue, but it doesn’t hurt to ask if they have any other needs. Set them in a location that works best for you and them, but consider the sound of the performance in the location you choose. If they are playing your prelude and entrance music, asking them to attend the rehearsal is a good way to practice timing for both of you. Be sure to ask your musician for advice when choosing your music. Clarify what you want played at what time, and make sure they can cover the variety of musical genres you require. Find out the payments they require and how long they will play.

to ride alone as a couple you will need to arrange a second option for the wedding party. If you have several out-of-town guests without their own transportation, consider providing transportation to get them to and from the ceremony and reception locations. Providing a shuttle service is

a nice touch, and ensures that they won’t be late because they got lost. It’s a good idea to have cab information, or the same shuttle service available to your guests following the reception. This is especially true if alcohol has been served. You do not want any tragedy to occur, and planning ahead for these circumstances will help to ensure only happy memories. YOUR GIFT REGISTRY Registering for gifts is a socially acceptable way to let your guests know what gifts you want or need. Here are a few basic tips to help you through the process. Set up your registries soon after your engagement, as friends and family will look to it for gift-giving ideas for engagement parties and showers. At least one of your registries should be available for purchases made online for guests who do not live in the area. Before you register, spend some time with your fiancé thinking about the items you could use the most, and the ones you already have. Plan on spending several

hours cruising your favorite stores to pick out just the right items. Registering can be fun and create a nice break in the hectic wedding planning process. Register for items at several stores and price points to give your guests flexibility in shopping. Include items from the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom that you need, but don’t forget to include “the want” items you and your groom have always wanted. If there is a rule of thumb on wedding gifts, this is it: whether the gift is what you registered for or comes from the giftgivers attic, always, always say “Thank you.” Show you care by being prompt when sending notes and try to have them in the mail within a month after your honeymoon. Make them personal and write them together, after all you are a married couple now.

HONEYMOON

PLANNING THE TRIP OF YOUR LIFE Dreaming of a honeymoon full of romance, adventure, and relaxation? Make those dreams a reality by hiring a certified travel agent. Hiring a professional is the best way to ensure that your trip will have no hidden fees, poor service, or unpleasant surprises. Working with a certified travel agent will save you time, and money. Travel professionals know all of the ins and outs of a destination, and will have invaluable local advice to make your honeymoon as safe and enjoyable as possible. Consider the climate where you are vacationing, and pack accordingly for the weather, as well as for the possible activities you will be doing. Be sure to use sunscreen, you do not want to spend your honeymoon in the hotel room soaking in aloe. Start making a list of the items you will need so when the time arrives you don’t have to rush and forget items. If you plan an international trip it will take time to get your passports, and medical clearances. Begin the process early to avoid the stress of waiting for your

credentials to arrive. If there is a currency difference it may be more beneficial to do an exchange before you leave the country. Major credit cards and travelers checks offer fraud protection, plan to carry these not cash. Be sure to have your travel agent’s contact information with you for help if needed. Check into traveler’s insurance for a policy that offers protection in the event of a natural disaster or illness. Hurricanes happen, and insurance against these unlikely events ensure you get your money refunded, or your honeymoon rescheduled. Check with your travel agent a few days before the wedding to confirm your plans. Then prepare to have an amazing first vacation as husband and wife. It doesn’t matter where you decide to go for your honeymoon, just go. Even if it’s simply a few days at location near home, it’s time spent together you will not regret.

Your honeymoon plans are important. We’ll handle them as we would our own, with knowledge and care. We’ll attend to each and every wish — all for a sensible price. For cruises, tours, hotels, car rentals and airline reservations, look to the Most Trusted name in Travel... AAA

BUDGET DEVELOPMENT

Developing a realistic wedding budget is essential and should be one of the first things you do. Keep your budget in mind so you will be able to make the right decisions when making choices. Here are a few questions you may want to discuss before developing your final budget.

Overall Budget
