AVIATION The 3DReid approach to Airport Design

Aviation plays a unique role in connecting people. The challenge for architecture is to balance the glamorous legacy of flight with sustainable facilities that serve future generations.

3DReid are recognised industry experts in aviation, having over 25 years facility design experience from large airport hubs to executive aviation.

Masterplanning Extensions & Refurbishment New Terminals Support Facilities Airport City

At 3DReid we aim to create buildings and spaces that work beautifully, effectively and responsibly for both their occupiers and the environment.

Globally we have worked across a number of major airports and FBO’s including Brazil, Gibraltar, Antigua, Abu Dhabi, Male and Russia.

We believe in an inclusive approach to design, where the sharing of knowledge and expertise, and the exchange of ideas is integral to the creative process. By listening to and working in partnership with our clients and all of those with whom we engage, we are able to blend inspired concepts with practical commercial experience and comprehensive knowledge, to create solutions that are both client and passenger focused.

We masterplan and design all aspects of an airfield’s operation, from logistics and operational buildings to new passenger terminals and aircraft hangars. We have established a strong reputation for terminal refurbishments, building a portfolio of complex projects that enhance the passenger experience.

Our UK airport experience covers airports across the country, from Aberdeen to Southampton, and includes regional airports, executive terminals and major hubs.

The following pages show a selection of our projects.

Masterplanning

Glasgow Airport 3DReid has led numerous airport masterplanning projects, both in the UK and abroad. We have a wide range of experience from large developments for existing major airports to smaller executive aviation airfields. At Glasgow Airport a masterplan was developed for doubling the airport capacity, including investigation of transport infrastructure between the airport and the city. The development of the Bristol Airport masterplan included the extension of the check-in area and the increase of baggage reclaim to support the continued growth of the airport.

Extensions & Refurbishment

Terminal Extensions

Heathrow T4 Extension

Reconfiguration of existing airport facilities is central to what we do. We have worked within the frameworks of both Heathrow and Gatwick for many years and has during this time been involved in the transformation of most types of passengerfacing areas within a terminal. We have also carried out modifications to smaller regional airports. Shown left is the 7750m² departures concourse extension, forecourt and public realm plaza at Heathrow Terminal 4. Glasgow’s Skyhub (right) is a 4,000m² twostorey extension providing new shops, bars, restaurants, a new purpose-built security area and World Duty Free.

Terminal Upgrades

3DReid has a great deal of experience in modifications to the existing airport fabric, adapting existing facilities to work with changes in operational procedures and the need to grow. Gatwick South Terminal - Central Security Search

Shown on this spread is a range of upgrades at Heathrow and Gatwick. We were lead designers on Heathrow’s ‘Tomorrow’s T4’, a suite of projects which transformed Terminal 4. The North-East Gate Reconfiguration project formed part of this tranche of works. At Gatwick, the Central Passenger Search project was a £40m consolidation of three separate search areas to provide a single 21 lane facility, including new vertical circulation cores and reconfiguration and re-provision of landside retail and F&B. An example of a Baggage Hall refurbishment is shown from Terminal 3. The baggage project provided three new transfer baggage facilities and the introduction of 100% Hold Baggage Screening. The outdated Immigration Hall was transformed into a bright and efficient facility, improving processing times and passenger experience.

Heathrow T3 Pier 5 Refurbishment

At Heathrow’s Terminal 4 the new departures concourse extension provided a bright and spacious addition to the terminal, with additional retail and F&B facilities. Further modifications at Heathrow include the full refurbishment of Pier 5 at Terminal 3, encompassing gate-rooms and new F&B provision. The IDL refurbishment project at Southampton Airport provided improved departures facilities, including additional retail and a new cafe within an enlarged lounge. The design was built upon the customer-focused efficiency of the airport and developed its unique characteristics and architectural integrity.

Connections

Heathrow T3 Gate 24 Remote Coaching Facility

Facilities that enable movement of passengers from terminal to aircraft and vice versa are frequently required to change and adapt. 3DReid’s portfolio includes several new-build coaching facilities to remote stands as well as modifications to contact stands, including air bridges and nodes. At Heathrow T3, the Gate 24 Remote Coaching Facility services both departing and arriving passengers, connecting to two levels of Pier 5 and providing spacious gateroom facilities with views across the airfield. At T4, both gaterooms and air bridges were modified to accommodate the new A380 aircraft, and new Remote Coaching facilities were provided.

Terminals

Gibraltar Airport

Design and delivery of a new international terminal to be used by passengers entering and exiting the building from both Gibraltar and Spain. The new arrangements create opportunities for flights from all over Spain and the rest of Europe to Gibraltar. A uniquely challenging brief for a design that must seamlessly accommodate different passenger flows. The architectural solution takes maximum advantage of the stunning backdrop of The Rock.

International design competition win to deliver a new business aviation airport. The masterplan includes a 35m high ATC tower, 28,000sqm aircraft hangar and a 4,000sqm operations and headquarters building, which won a RIBA Award. The innovative operations building design was delivered under budget using 25,000 aluminium shingles on the terminal, which are 100% recyclable. The RIBA-award winning project has become a backdrop for major films including Inception and Quantum of Solace.

Farnborough Airport

Leeds Bradford International Airport

Submission bid for main terminal expansion. New landscaped forecourt areas inclusive of passenger drop off zones and re-configured parking areas. 4,600 sqm high profile extension to front facade and re-organisation of interior layout/operations.

Executive Jet Facility, Luton Airport

A new standalone executive jet facility for Signature Flight Support, one of the world’s leading Fixed Base Operators. The building includes a 2,400 sqm VIP terminal and 5,000 sqm hangar facility capable of housing 2 BBJ aircraft and a dedicated ground support equipment store and workshop. This project not only provides the highest level of terminal environment for passengers and crew, but also paves the way for a standard facility model that Signature can use in future developments across their expansive global operations.

Farnborough Hangars

In Farnborough we designed two three-bay hangars, 290m long, 45m deep and 22m high at the apex. All bays are capable of housing two Boeing 737’s or a combination of smaller aircraft. The tied arch design solution allowed the team to reduce the area of the elevations and therefore the cost of the cladding. The added benefit was improved aesthetics, reduced wind load on the structure and a reduced impact on the surroundings

Hangars Our involvement in hangar design covers a comprehensive portfolio to accommodate and service all ranges of aircraft, from light turbo prop’s to A380’s. Our experience derives from an in-depth understanding of airfield operations and strong technical knowledge of the aircraft maintenance requirements. Our previous hangar projects include stand-alone and multi-bay hangars as well as mixed-mode buildings that include terminal facilities and FBO operations. Moscow Search & Rescue Hangars - multi-site UK

We have conducted extensive research into obtaining the optimum efficiency of hangar structures, the findings of which continue to influence our design decisions today. Our designs range from simple rectilinear boxes to expressive ‘A’ frame sections for large span structures, as used at the award winning Farnborough Airport. Our long track record in all types of hangar design allows us to quickly determine, based on site constraints, aircraft and facility requirements, the most appropriate economic and efficient solution for the client

Air Traffic Control Towers

3DReid has established a reputation as a leading designer of Air Traffic Control Towers, creating a series of sculptural forms that combine optimal area efficiency with iconic architectural design. At Farnborough, the integration of the 35m tower and support building was resolved by using a seamless brushed aluminium skin as a cloak, and extruding it up the stem of the tower before flaring outwards to support the VCR. Edinburgh Airport’s 57m high air traffic control tower combines the base and shaft to make a single hourglass-shaped building, setting a new benchmark for control tower design and construction.

Heathrow T2 Premium Car Park

Car Rental & Parking How do we get to and from the airport? Whilst public transport is to be encouraged, a percentage of passengers will always arrive and depart by car. An airport’s car parking and car rental facilities are an integral part of the landside provision. At Heathrow T2, we were appointed to develop a high-end design strategy to enhance the Terminal’s premium passengers experience.

Gatwick MSCP3

At Gatwick, upgrades of the MSCP’s at both the South and North Terminals were carried out to improve customer arrivals experience. MSCP3 won ‘Best Refurbishment’ at the National Car Parking Awards 2006. 3DReid has also completed several Consolidated Car Rental Facilities, where all car rental companies are combined in a single customer friendly facility with shared services.
