J36 Second Suckled Calf Sale Thursday 9th November North West Auctions held their second autumn show and sale of Suckled Calves today, which saw a great ringside of buyers with all stock being well bid for, with the trade being better than the previous sale.

The pre-sale show was very kindly judged by Mr Stuart Cornthwaite, where a fantastic show of cattle was put before him. The champion rosette was awarded to the first prize Limousin Suckler bull from RI Dixon which later went on to sell for £900, which also topped the bull section. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to D & DW Prickett from Farleton with a Limousin heifer making £800.

Leading the Suckler Calf trade was Fishwick Bros, Long Sleddale at £950 for a Limousin bullock at 7 months old. Topping the heifer section was also Fishwick Bros, again, with a Limousin selling to £890.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 10th October The smallest entry of Store Cattle for some while at Lancaster with 251 cattle forward, selling to a continued brisk trade. Well grown cattle, carrying meat were also in keen demand with a bit more trade today for black and white bullocks as numbers of store cattle now become tighter at markets and the autumn glut now gone buyers becoming keener again to purchase.

Topping the day’s trade was DE & SM Moorhouse, High House Farm selling a Simmental Bullock to £1330 followed by Mason & Gardner of Stoneybank Philpin Farm selling a Limousin Bullock to £1290. Other notable prices from the bullock section saw three Limousin, again from DE & SM Moorhouse, sell to £1270 and British Blue to £1240 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pasture House Farm. Heifers sold to a top of £1180 for a Limousin from M & RW Stirzaker, Station Hotel with a British Blue heifer selling to £1150 from J, BL & I Ellis, Hawkrigg End. Another strong entry of Native Cattle in the market today saw Angus Bullocks sell to a top of £1180 from D & N Davis, Cragg Farm, £1170 from DR Preston, Ellers Farm and £1160, twice, firstly from DW & NM Alderson, High Green and secondly by JS Clark & Sons, Godson House Farm. A couple of Hereford Bullocks from DR Preston sold to £1120. All Angus Bullocks forward sold to an average of £1048. Angus Heifers sold to £1140 from AT Burrow & Son, High Snab.

Over 20% of the cattle forward today sold over £1100.

A bumper entry of 163 OTM Cattle today, selling to a continued strong trade at Lancaster with a buys ringside of buyers looking to purchase all specifications of cows on offer. An Angus Cast Bullock topped the trade selling to 195.5p/kg from B, L & D Banks, Squires Gate Farm. Top price per head was achieved by AK & PA Threlfall, Lambrigg Farm, with an Angus Cow, selling to £1165. Black and white OTM’s sold to 154.5p/kg for a cow from AT Burrow & Son. Black and white Heifers sold to 149.5p/kg from ME Wannop & Son, Heaton Hall, with all Friesian Heifers averaging 117.63p/kg An overall market average of 104.75p/kg was achieved for all OTM cattle forward.

There was a smaller number of Calves forward today following some big entries of calves as seen over the previous weeks, with all types of required for next Friday to meet the demands of returning buyers in the market for black and whites as well as beef calves. The trade was in keeping with younger beef calves especially, heifer calves were slightly harder to place this week and black and whites are sought after and keenly bid for at Lancaster.

The trade topped at £335 for a British Blue Bull from W & G Cornthwaite, Matshead Farm, British Blue Heifer calves sold to £320, again from W & G Cornthwaite. Limousin Bull Calves sold to £305 from JM & MH France & Son, Newhouse Farm. Black and white calves sold to £170 and £120 from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Hall Farm. Wallbank Farms sold a black and white bull calf to £100.

Monday 13th November There was a sharp trade, once again, for Prime Lambs in Lancaster this morning, with more of a show of hill lambs forward seeing the average finish up at 165p/kg. Good quality Continental and Suffolk lambs continue to sell well and in demand, more could have been sold today to the advantage of the vendor.

Topping the trade today was George Sanderson of Blackleach Farm with a quality consignment of Texel lambs topping at £93.50 and £93 or to 204p/kg, the full consignment sold to an average of £92.50, with more of these good lambs required. A consignment of heavy weight lambs from J Bargh and Son of North Farm sold to £88 for 48kg Charollais lambs and 50kg Texels to £86 and Suffolks to £85. Good conformation Texel lambs were selling either side of 190p/kg. Upland lambs saw Masham lambs sell to a top of £79 from WI & A Atkinson and Son of Holme House who also sold 45kg Mules to £72.50.

The market was topped by a 1 month old British Blue bull calf from DR & C Galbraith, Sunny Bank selling for £330. Heifer calves were topped by a 2 month old British Blue from E & SM Halpin, Rakesmoor Farm.

Stirks were topped by a 6 month old Hereford bull from E & SM Halpin, Rakesmoor Moor selling for £515 and heifers selling to £380 from RJ & J Gardner, Natland Mill Beck Farm for an Angus.

A smaller show of OTM Cattle today at J36, with the market being topped by a Stabiliser bull from A Dixon & Son, Kit Crag weighing 960kg and selling for £1224.00. A Limousin cow from N Cooper & Son, Troughton Hall sold for £899.81 closely followed by a Swiss Brown from JJ& MA Park, Sizergh selling for £866.30 and a Limousin from J & M Wilson, Cooper House selling for £862.79.

Black and white cows sold to a top of 117.5p/kg from JJ & MA Park & Son, Low Sizergh followed by HJ Robinson & Son, Elm Tree selling a Friesian to 104.5p/kg.

All cast cows forward today sold to an average of 102.5p/kg.

The monthly sale of Beef Breeding Cattle saw a good show of predominantly dairy bred suckler cattle in the market today, selling to a sharper trade than anticipated. In-calf cows topped at £1100 for the herd dispersal from M Archer & Son, Redbank and others from the same home selling to £1000 and £980. Bulling heifers, all Aberdeen Angus from J & M Maudsley and Sons, Raw End sold to a top of £910 and £890.

Cows with calves at foot were topped by a smart British Blue Heifer with a Limousin bull calf at foot which sold for £1800 from B & HM Wilson, Ashstead, followed by a pure Limousin cow with pure Limousin calf at foot from Thor Atkinson, Meadow View selling for £1680 and a Limousin cow with a smart British Blue bull calf at foot sold for £1650 from S Procter, High Biggarsbank.

Breeding bulls were an excellent trade topped by a 19 month old pedigree Limousin bull from Thor Atkinson, selling for £3,500 and another one for £2,400 both going to local buyers.

Store Cattle were harder to place today with the bad summer taking its toll on cattle this year and purchasers being cautious over their fodder supply this winter. Trade was topped by a smart Limousin bullock from SW Atkinson and Son, Capplerigg selling for £1050.

Others from the same home sold for £960, £920 and £910. A 19 month old Charolais bullock from TM & D Dobson, Broad Oak sold for £990. The top priced heifer was a Limousin from R & A Galbraith, Carter House, selling for £850 with others from R & A Galbraith selling for £820, £770 and £730.

Tuesday 14th November The monthly sale of all classes of Pigs had a bumper entry of 119 forward, consisting of 10 Prime Pigs, which were in short supply, 4 cast sows and boars, 15 Store pigs and a tremendous entry of 90 weaners.

Prime pigs met a strong demand with a 114kg Prime Hogs selling to £175 from PK & R Woof, Storth End Farm, this was closely followed by JR Corlet, Skiddaw View selling 98kg pigs to £135. All prime pigs forward sold to a market average of 118p/ kg. More are required at the next sale to fulfil Christmas requirements.

Cast pigs saw sows and boars sell to £70 from AF Mather of Lower Broadwood.

Store pigs sold to a top of £80 for well grown black gilts from H Craghill of Redbrow Farm. The bumper entry of weaners were met by strong demand and a large clientele, topping the trade was D & R Cornthwaite of Lockerbie, selling to £45.

Good white weaners, gilts and hogs, sold around the £40 mark with boars harder to place, selling around the £20 mark.

A larger entry of Prime Lambs forward today, sold to a continued strong trade.

Once again, all types of export lambs were in strong demand, selling to a top of 235p/kg or £92 from JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm, with 39kg lambs.

Beltex lambs topped at £99.50 for 44kg lambs from ST Birkett & Son, Hall Croft Barn, this was closely followed by £99 for heavy Beltex lambs from AR & BJ Thompson, Poppy Farm. All Beltex lambs forward sold to a market average of 202p/kg. Heavy weight lambs continue to sell well at J36, with 56kg Suffolks selling to £92 from ST Birkett & Son and D Metcalfe, Crooklands Brow. Plenty of heavy weight lambs selling the mid to late eighties. It was good to have more hill bred lambs on the market today with heavy weight Mules from F & SA Edmondson, Netherhouses Farm selling to £83. Mules from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Red Scar sold to £77, with, in general, mid forty kilo Mules selling to the early seventies.

The Cast Sheep trade remained similar this week, with cast rams topping the market at £118 for Charollais’ from the Denney Family of Johnscales Farm and Texel tups topped at £116 from David Thompson of Overmere. Best Continental and Texel ewes sold in excess of £100, topping at £112 for A & B Fell, Hodgsons Green Farm. Mule ewes sold to a top of £72 from DM & D Cook of Smithy Green and best Mule ewes sold in the region of £70. Horned Ewes saw Rough Fells sell to a top of £56 from J & PR Woof of Dent, with Swaledale Ewes topping at £42 from TW & C Shepherd of Nook Farm.
