Weekly Report and Newsletter - 16th July 2021 Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Goats - Monday 12th July SPRING LAMBS Lancaster Monday had an increased entry of 831 lambs forward, selling to an overall market average 11p up on the week of 253p/kg. This led to an impressive market average of £103.87 a head which is very good for the middle of July and well ahead of the previous year.

It was heavy weight Texel lambs which led the way, selling to £139 from GA & RA Surtees, Stodday followed by 51kg Texels selling to £137. Closely following on from this was the consignment from J S Horner, Ingleton with 45kg Beltex lambs selling to £135 or 300p/kg with others from the same home achieving £131. Other noted prices for Texel sired lambs were £131 from S Robinson, Goosnargh, £130 from RA Holmes, Inskip, with £129 achieved by E Hartley, Hornby and T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Plenty more lambs easily sold in the £120’s.

Beltex lambs sold to a top of 302p/kg from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham followed by 300p/kg from P Kaye, Chorley and 297p/kg from W A & L M Jenkinson, Stalmaine. Plenty pens of nicely bred lambs sold around the 270-290 p/kg mark.

More Mule lambs were in the market today with 52kg lambs selling to £120 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyersdale. Followed by 45kg Mules selling to £106 from T & H Drinkall, Oakenclough, with others to £104 from the same home.

Lightweight lambs continue to be in strong demand with well finished ones frequently selling in excess of 250p/kg.

PRIME HOGGS Just a handful of prime hoggs in the market today, which saw Texels sell to a top of £93 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof.

CAST SHEEP There was a bumper entry of 451 cast sheep which saw big, well meated Continental Mules continue to sell to a strong trade, with the trade for smaller, leaner types of sheep - especially hill sheep - slightly less on the previous week. Leading the way today was a couple of Texel tups selling to £152 from R & DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. A pen of 8 Texel cast ewes sold to £136 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping.

Other Texel x ewes sold to £132 from K A Purtill, Wigan, £130 from C D & H L Mason, Caton followed by £128 from J Smith, Brookhouse. Plenty more pens of Continental ewes easily selling in the £120’s. Suffolk ewes sold to £135 from W N & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

The trade for the Mule ewes twice peaked at £114 from G Riley, Bolton-le-Sands and W N & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark.

Leicester ewes this week sold to a top of £114 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead.

There was a lot more horned sheep in the market today which saw the trade twice top at £84, firstly from B & SE Carter, Ellel and then from W I & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Pens of stronger, well meated Swaledale ewes sold in excess of the £70 mark. Scotch Blackface ewes sold to £80 from P Kaye, Chorley.

A handful of goats in the market today, always meet plenty of demand and are eagerly bid for selling to £76 from SE Peacock, Cockerham.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep - 13th July 2021 SPRING LAMBS There was a bumper entry of 1646 spring lambs forward at J36, which was met with strong demand from a busy ringside of buyers. There was an overall market average of 249p/kg. Well finished lambs today were in strong demand and eagerly bid for with those vendors gaining the financial benefits, leaner types of lambs were financially penalised. J36 continues to have a good trade for heavy weight lambs.

Heavy weight Suffolk lambs led the way today selling to £153 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet followed by £143 from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Charollais lambs peaked at £134 from T A Teasdale, Grange-Over-Sands. Heavy weight Texel lambs peaked at £132 from G A Rawsthorne, Cartmel. Plenty more pens of 45kg plus lambs that were well finished sold in excess of the £120 mark. Well finished standard weight Farm Assured Continental lambs regularly selling around the 250p/kg mark with better types easily selling in excess of this price. Better conformation lambs saw Texels sell to 279p/kg or £117 from R H S & M Boyren, Ulverston with others to 278p/kg from M & YS Barker, Halton. Plenty of pens of better conformation lambs regularly selling around the 270p/kg mark. Light weight lambs continue to be in strong demand with the well finished ones regularly selling in the £80’s and early £90’s. Mule lambs this week peaked at £104.50. Spring lamb trade continues to be very buoyant for the time of year and once again lambs averaged over the £100 mark at £103.93.

PRIME HOGGS There was a full variety of prime hoggs forward as to be expected for the time of year with well finished fleshed hoggs eagerly bid for and getting away well. Texel hoggs peaked at £115 and £112 from J M Simpson, Underbarrow. Other hoggs to £102 or 221p/kg from E Parker, Mewith with Leicester hoggs to the same price from Harriet Parker, which was closely followed by £100 for Texel hoggs from Katie Birkett, Burton-in-Kendal.

CAST SHEEP There was a bumper entry of 865 sheep forward that was met by plenty of demand increased by the Qurbani festival next week. Well fleshed ewes and rams are selling to a premium and despite reports from throughout the country of leaner ewes being less money, this was not seen today. Texel cast ewes led the way today selling to £159 from JE Hadwin, Kirkby Lonsdale. Pure Suffolk ewes peaked at £140 from T A & J Dixon, Selside. Plenty of pens of strong continental ewes easily and regularly selling around the £130-mark, Mule ewes today peaked at £127 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, followed by £118 from M & Y S Barker, Halton.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime, Cast, Store and Weaner Pigs - 13th July 2021 The sale of pigs at Junction 36 saw a high-quality line up of 60 prime pigs, with all pigs selling to their full value. A wonderful run of prime gilts from D Lord, Preesall saw a top of £152 with others from the same home selling to £132 twice. Well finished prime gilts were regularly selling well over the £120 mark. All prime pigs averaged 102p/kg. Weaners were on fire, with a top of £72 for a large white gilt from Martin and Alison Winstanley, Scorton, whom also sold a pen of 6 to £58. Weaners were regularly selling well over the £40 mark.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Opening Sale of Store Lambs - Thursday 15th July 2021 What a great way to open this season’s store lamb sales; the largest entry for the opening sale as the reputation for selling store lambs at Junction 36 continues to grow. There were 1930 lambs forward meeting plenty of demand with buyers present from throughout the country. Trade saw best quality Beltex lambs easily selling in excess of the £100 mark, with well grown short term lambs eagerly bid for, selling into the eighties and nineties. Medium keep lambs looking the best value on the day, selling into the late seventies and early eighties with longer keep lambs looking well sold in the early seventies.

Leading the way today were short keep Suffolk lambs selling to £120 from J T & A Armitstead, Selside, other noted prices for Suffolks were £107 from MD & SA Park, Lyth Valley. Best bred Beltex and Texel x lambs were meeting plenty of demand with Beltex lambs selling to £116 from Richard Batty, Selside, with other pens of lambs twice selling to £106 from this home. The consignment of Beltex and Texel x lambs from J T & A Armitstead, Selside sold to £115, £109 and £103.50. Other leading pries for Beltex lambs were £110 from J C & E Pedley & Sons,

Sedbergh. Texel lambs from F I & M E Little, Barrows Green sold to £104, with Texels out of Cheviots to £100 from N P & C E Buckley, Staveley, with plenty more pens of forward lambs easily selling into the nineties.

Upland lambs saw Mules sell to £78 from J F Cook, Grange-Over-Sands with Cheviot Mules to £77 from J A & SM Allen, Windermere. Pens of stronger Mules sold around the £70 mark. Horned lambs peaked at £63.50 for a pen of 55 Scotch Blackface x lambs from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle and Store Cattle - Friday 16th July 2021 CALVES AND WEANLINGS Lancaster continues to offer a strong trade for all calves with buyers present wanting more each week. Leading the way this week were 12-week-old British Blue bulls selling to £490 from J T & B Fox, Quernmore with other British Blue bulls from the same home to £470 and heifers to £465. Matching the top price of the day at £490 was a weaned Angus heifer calf from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton, whom sold British Blue heifers to £470. Other leading prices saw British Blue heifers to £475 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham whom sold Angus heifers to £445.

British Blue bulls from AW & AW Park & Sons, Ellel at 2-months-old sold at £460. 6-week-old British blue bulls from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Kendal achieved the £400 mark. Plenty more strong Continental calves easily selling around £400, with 1 month old beef calves regularly selling around the £300 mark.

Black and whites topped at £245 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with others achieving £155 from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton.

STORE CATTLE Lancaster’s weekly sale of store cattle had an entry of 177 forward, with a few missing as vendors take advantage of this good weather and catch up with field work. Once again, forward cattle full of flesh were eagerly bid for and looking well sold. Today saw more grass-fed cattle on the market, still meeting plenty of demand but a slightly easier trade.

A great run of well fleshed cattle from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold Angus to £1550, British Blues to £1510 and Montbeliardes to £1490. Native cattle continue to be in strong demand at Lancaster with a pen of Angus bullocks to £1470 from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton.

Other Angus bullocks sold to £1340 for a pen of four from H Birkett & Son, Overton, followed by others to £1330 from J & JM Walmsley, Pilling. Other native bullocks saw beef Shorthorns and Welsh Blacks sell to £1310 from R & EG Gardner, Brigsteer.

Continental bullocks this week saw a pair of British Blues at £1400 from BW & G Robinson, Ingleton followed by £1350 from J & M Cockett, Ingleton. Limousin bullocks sold to £1330 from T & E Garlick & Son, Freckleton. Plenty of pens of strong bullocks easily and regularly selling around the £1300 mark.

The heifer trade peaked at £1280 for beef Shorthorns from R & E Gardner, Brigsteer with other heifers from S Kellett & Sons, Pilling selling Herefords to £1250 and Angus to £1200. Other noted prices for heifers were £1240 from T Robson & Son, Poulton-Le-Fylde. Yearling suckler bred bullocks sold to £1250 from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton.

OTM CATTLE There was a much-reduced entry of cast and OTM cattle forward today, as many vendors took advantage of the good weather leading to an impressive overall market average of 153p/kg.

Young Limousin cows sold to 199p/kg from H Morgan, Stalmine. British Blue cows sold to 194.5p/kg or a top price of the day of £1458 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. OTM heifers sold to 187.5 p/kg for Friesians from WA Ward & Son, Slyne, with plenty of others in the late 170’s.

Best dairy cows today regularly sold into the 160’s; the leading prices being £1228 from LM Harrison & Son, Dolphinholme, £1192 from ME & B Mason & Son, Tatham, £1188 from CJ & MH Parry, Cockerham, £1186 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme and £1175 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. Plenty more good dairy cows regularly selling round the £1100 mark.

There was a few stock bulls forward today which saw Limousins sell to £1467 from WA Ward & Son, Slyne, with others to £1429 from JM Kelsall & Son, Quernmore.
