Weekly Report and Newsletter - 29th October Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 25th October 2021 Prime Lambs A full consignment of buyers forward at Lancaster today, ensured a strong market average of 230p/kg for 896 lambs forward, with over 30% of the entry forward today being Mule and Horned lambs. This week’s sale included the annual young handlers show of prime lambs, it was great once again to see plenty of enthusiastic young shepherd and shepherdesses in the market. A big thank you goes to our sponsors Myerscough College and BB Dairies, as well as to our judge James Linsley, for taking on this task and doing a great job. The Championship rosette, was awarded to Henry Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe who’s champion lamb was a Texel weighing 59kg going on to sell for £150 and was purchased by the judge. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to John James Bargh, selling a 40kg Beltex lamb to £118. The first prize upland lamb was awarded to Adam Ayrton who sold his 41kg Mule lamb to £88. A big thank you to all our young handlers for taking part.

Heavy weight lambs continue to be in big demand, selling to a strong overall market average of 238p/kg. A consignment from B&M Slater, Chipping led the way selling to £137 and £135 with Texel lambs. Other Texel lambs sold to £136 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof, with other noted prices for Texel lambs being £133 from JM &MH France & Son, Littledale, £130 from PS Lee, Over Wyresdale, £130 from T&L Kirkham, Eccleston, followed £129 & £128.50 from B&SE Carter, Ellel. A large quantity of other pens easily selling in excess of £120. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 295p/kg from J Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe with plenty of pens of better-bred lambs easily selling between 250-270p/kg. As mentioned before a large number of upland bred lambs forward today, saw Mashams sell to £119 weighing 54kg from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. 51kg Mules sold to £113 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, with others to £111.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale, plenty of pens of Mule lambs sold around the £100 mark. Once again, all prime lambs forward today averaged in excess of £100.

Cast Sheep The trade for well fleshed cast sheep was slightly sharper, with planer types of sheep no dearer. Dutch Spotted cast ewes sold to £124 from Myercough College, this was followed by Texel ewes selling to £122 from GR & A Foy, Conder Green, with well fleshed Continental ewes regularly selling over the £100 mark. Mule ewes peaked at £97 and £94 from Myerscough College with Mule and Masham ewes to £93 and £91 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Plenty of fit Mule ewes selling in the eighties. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots sell to £84 from KA Purtill.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 26th October 2021 Prime Lambs North West Auctions were proud to host the annual young handlers show for prime lambs, kindly sponsored by BB Dairies, Kendal College and Rural Law. A big thank you goes to our judge, Brian Knowles who we thank for under taking this task. The Champion lamb and being awarded the Cornthwaite group shield was 8-year-old Libby Dixon, Selside with her Texel lamb weighing 50kg, which went on to sell for £200 and was purchased by John Geldard on behalf of Plumgarths Farm Shop. The Champion young handlers was awarded to 7-year-old Jack Matthews, who reserved the John Geldard young handler challenge cup with his 47kg Beltex lamb, which went on to sell for £200 and was purchased by John Geldard on behalf of Plumgarths Farm Shop. A big congratulations goes to all the young handlers for taking part, it was wonderful to see so many young enthusiastic people in the market.

There was an increased entry of 1591 lambs forward, selling to an overall market average of 232p/kg. All speciation of lambs today were well bid for, with heavy weight lambs today leading the way, topping at £145 from

R Lawrence, Grange over Sands with 60kg Texels. This was closely followed by £141 from both T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping and I Ridding, Old Hutton. Heavy weight Suffolk lambs peaked at £136 from TA&J Dixon, Selside, with plenty of heavy weight lambs regularly selling in the £120 - £130. Better confirmation lambs saw Beltex lambs sell to 308p/kg from CM Jennings, Selside with plenty of pens of better confirmation lambs between 270-300p/kg. Mule lambs peaked at £113 from TA&J Dixon, Selside, with others to £109 from A Winn, Burneside, plenty of Mule lambs sold in excess of the £100 mark.

Cast Sheep Another good entry of 650 ewes forward, with heavy ewes once again selling to a strong trade, lighter ewes were slightly less on the week. Texel ewes sold to a top of £137 from I Ridding, Old Hutton, with the best regularly selling into the £130’s, medium well bred Texel’s ewes sold above the £110 mark. A bigger show of Mule ewes were forward with the best selling into the nineties, topping at £99 from MP&CE Buckley, Staveley, with others selling at £89 from Wannop Farms, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Medium type Mules regularly sold to the £70-£75 mark, with leaner types selling over the £60 mark. Hill ewes sold to £89 for a pen of Cheviot ewes from NP&CE Buckley, Staveley, with Roughs selling to £82 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Sam Whitehead’s, Middleton runs of Gritstone ewes sold to a top of £70. More Swaledale ewes were forward this week, with buyers showing more interest, topping at £74 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston, medium fit types regularly sold to £55-£60 mark.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Prime, Weaner, Cast & Store Pigs, Tuesday 26th October 2021

Prime pigs today saw a top price of £122 for Tamworth x Pietrain hogs from Thomas Brannen, Temple Sowerby who sold gilts at £102. Berkshire boars from B Capstick, Sedbergh sold to £100 with Large Whites selling to £92 from D Lord, Preesall. Lighter weight gilts sold to £82 from W Stamper, Chipping.

A top p/kg of 127p/kg was again achieved for Tamworth x Pietrain hogs from Thomas Brannen, Temple Sowerby with other well finished white pigs 100p/kg – 115p/kg with coloured pigs and boars a more selective trade with buyers showing preference to white pigs and gilts and hogs.

Stores and Weaners (69) There was an increased entry in this sale section with a wide variety on offer. Well grown and level groups of pigs attracted the keenest interest with Large White x store gilts selling to £44 from R Taylor, Lancaster with Saddleback x store gilts from R Dick, Freckleton selling to £22.

Weaners sold to £20 for Gloucester Old Spot x from S Lawton, Carnforth with Saddleback x also achieving £20 from J & SA Barton, Barnacre.

Cull Sows and Boars (23) The largest entry of culls seen for several months with heavy and well fleshed sorts selling to keenest interest; with 4 buyers competing for culls and demand for 20+ at each sale.

Sows sold to £95 and £92 from W Stamper, Chipping with others generally £33 - £75.

Top p/kg of 50p/kg was achieved for a young sow from N Race, Eskdale with others generally 22p/kg – 30p/kg with all cull sows averaging 26p/kg.

Cull boars sold to £65 and 39p/kg from Holts Farm, Bromley Cross.

Vendors are strongly encouraged to pre-enter pigs to assist the Auction with canvassing customers.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle, 28th October 2021 Calves & Stirks The J36 fortnightly sale saw 110 calves forward, with all vendors once again leaving with a smile on their faces from the mornings trade. Quality calves were in high demand with British Blue bulls selling to £495 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick, with others from the same good home selling to £480. Many British Blue bulls were breaking the £400 barrier. Native bred bulls sold well for strength, with Aberdeen Angus’s selling to £345 from R Morris-Eyton & Son, Whicham, with others to £335 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington. All Aberdeen Angus bulls forward averaged £310. HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick sold another lovely run of British Blues heifers selling to £410. Other British Blue heifers sold to £380 from TW&TE Sharp, Lyth whom also sold others to £370.

A young show of native heifers were forward with Aberdeen Angus’s selling to £260 from JH Walton & Son,

Kirkby Stephen. A small show of Black and White bulls sold to a top of £135 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth, with others selling to £110 from R Morris-Eyton & son, Whicham. Medium types regularly sold around the £40-£50 mark.

60 stirks were forward with all cattle selling to their full value, British Blue heifers sold to £655 from D Wightman & A Mason, Burton in Kendal. Other British Blue heifers sold to £630 from RJ&KR Wilkinson, Levens. Charolais bullocks sold to £650 from AG&ME Clark, Cartmel Fell. S&A Wood, Pennington sold a run of weaned Limousins calves to £550 for bulls and £510 for heifers. Buyers are keen to purchase all types of stirks for the next sale.

Store Cattle A seasonal entry of store cattle were forward today, all classes and types were keenly bid for with buyers looking to secure replacement and additional stock. Todays saw steers sell to a top price of £1170 for Limousin x from AJ&H Clark, Sedbergh who sold others at £1140, Simmental x steers from T Sharp sold to £1080, with Charolais x steers from AW Irvine, Windermere selling at £1035. A keen interest for yearling steers saw Limousins sell to £1065 from FW Park, Windermere with others generally £880-£940. Native bred steers sold to £1125 for Aberdeen Angus’s from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with other Aberdeen Angus’s to £1080 from RJ Walling, Mislet. Yearling native sired steers sold to £860 for Aberdeen Angus x from WR Clark & Partners, Carnforth and AE&PC Capstick, Milnthorpe. Saler x steers from D Stephenson, Ravenstonedale sold at £860.

Several dairy bred steers forward sold to £860 for Dairy shorthorns from S&M Cooper, Leece, Fleckviehs to £825 from JK&A Bowness & Son, Wasset, Montbeliarde achieving £825 from A&B Pickthall, Hincaster and 12-monthold Holstein Friesian from R Wilkinson, Clitheroe achieved £670.

Heifers sold to a top price of £1175 for a Hereford x from D Wightman & A Mason, Burton in Kendal, closely followed by I&AJ Armer, Burneside selling British Blues at £1170. A pen of Limousin heifers from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton sold at £990. With other Continental heifers regularly selling at £900-£960. A pen of White Park x Limousin heifers from JE Wightman, Lupton achieved £995. Limousin x Belted Galloway heifers from KD&L Armer, Kirkby Stephen achieved £830. Younger heifers generally sold around £740-£820.

A single bull for today sold at £1090 for a Hereford x from FW Park, Windermere.

A small entry of beef breeding cattle today, saw pure Hereford cows with Hereford calves at foot sell at £1290 and £1280 from R Dick, Kirkham.

OTM Cattle Today saw 8 buyers ring side today ensuring a completive trade from start to finish, with an overall market average of 136p/kg achieved. Cull cows sold to a top price of 179p/kg for a young Holstein Friesians from S&M Cooper, Leece, who sold others at 159p/kg. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows generally sold around 135-148p/kg, with mediums 120-135p/kg and leaner parlour type cows 95-112p/kg.

Beef cows sold to 171.5p/kg for a British Blue x from WH Kitching & Sons, Kendal. Other beef cows suitable for further finishing regularly selling 135-150p/kg, depending on age and quality. Top grossing cow was £1186 for a Holstein Friesian from S&M Cooper, Leece, closely followed by a pure Hereford from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite achieving £1146. Several cull bulls forward today saw Hereford sell to 154p/kg from GM Redmayne, Ings, with others at £1463 from RJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite. Dairy bulls sold to 109p/kg and £913 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness.

OTM heifers sold to 197.5p/kg and £1186 for British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son, Farlton who also sold OTM British Blue steers at 197p/kg and Hereford x steers to £1298.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, Store and OTM Cattle - 29th October 2021 Calf & Stirks What a difference a week makes, there was far more interest in calves this week and it was great to have a full ring of buyers and spectators in attendance which helped to ensure a sharper trade. There was an entry of 73 calves forward this week, which saw the consignment of British Blue bulls from J&G Thornley, Roseacre sell to £515 and £510, British Blue heifers from the same home achieved £360. A consignment of Limousin calves from DJ Clark Farming, Barnacre sold bull calves to £440 and £400, with heifer calves selling to £360. Six-week-old British Blue bull calves from Lawsons Farms, Cockerham sold to £380. Aberdeen Angus bull calves this week sold to a top of £340 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore, with others to £330 from Wannop farms, Heaton with Oxcliffe.

Heifers were a sharper trade this week, a five-week-old Charolais sold to £315 from GJ&G Billington, Garstang.

Dairy bull calves were in strong demand today, which saw Fleckviehs sell to £285 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby, Black and White weanlings selling to £240, £235 and £230 twice from RE&P Miller, Barnacre. Black and White rearing calves sold to a top of £165 from Wannop Farms.

The monthly sale of stirks at Lancaster had an entry of just over 100 forward, the trade saw good quality bullock stirks in big demand and meeting a strong trade, plainer and stunted types met realisation, with the heifers well bid for but native heifers still looking good value for money. 7-month-old Limousin bullocks led the way selling to £820 from PJ Holt & Sons, Little Thornton with yearling British Blue bullocks selling to £810 from H&C Pickervance, Roseacre. Native bullocks saw 7–8-month-old Herefords sell to £790 from R&A Jolleys, Cabus.

Plenty of pens of nicely grown 6–8-month-old bullocks regularly selling in the mid seven hundreds. Black and White bullocks sold to a top of £700 from BN Greenwood, Catterall, with 7-month-old Montbeliarde bullocks to £690 from EW & RM Towers, Hornby.

The heifer trade peaked at £690 and £680 from PJ Holt & Sons, Little Thornton with 6-month-old Limousin

heifers. Yearling British Blue heifers twice sold to £660 from H&C Pickervance, Roseacre and G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel.

Store Cattle It was noted today in Lancaster that fleshed cattle were met with a sharper trade. Hitting the high spot of £1480 today were British Blue bullocks consigned by JM&AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Other Continental bullocks peaked at £1360 from Barlow Bros, Croston, with the Limousin trade peaking at £1320 from TE JS SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Native steers continue to be a strong trade in Lancaster as Aberdeen Angus Bullocks twice peaked at £1440 firstly from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe and then from J Hesketh, Hutton. Hereford bullocks peaked at £1400 from AG Stafford, plenty more pens of native bred bullocks easily selling into the £1300’s. Topping the heifer trade this week was Beef Shorthorns selling to £1380 and £1370 from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer. Black and White bullocks peaked at £1300 from JM&AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. All steers in the market today sold to an overall market average of £1109.

OTM Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to 214.5p/kg from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston, with Limousin OTM heifers sell to 199.5p/kg from RH&RA Fawcett, Burton whom sold Black and White steers to a top of 194.5p/kg. Black and White feeding heifers sold to 184.5p/kg from W&S Airey, Whittington. Fleshed beef cows today were in strong demand today in Lancaster topping at 181.5p/kg for Limousins from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Limousin cows peaked at £1382 per head from RHM&S Boyren, Ulverston. Black and White dairy cows sold to 141.5p/kg from SW&K Metcalf & Son, Whittington or a top price of the day of £1124.
