Weekly Report and Newsletter - 25th June 2021 Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep - 21st June 2021 SPRING LAMBS Lancaster auction had a large entry of 951 spring lambs forward, selling to a reduced trade as seen Nationwide but still eagerly bid for by Lancaster’s active ring of buyers.

Lancasters overall market average today was 258p/kg. The consignment from J S Horner, Ingleton led the way selling Texels to £152 or 310p/kg, best confirmation butcher type lambs still regularly sold around and in excess of the 300p/kg mark.

Other noted prices today saw Texels to £139 from J S Horner, with Charollais to £136 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth and heavy weight Texels to £133 from PD Anderton, Scorton. Still plenty of lambs today easily selling in excess of the £120 mark.

Light weight lambs still eagerly bid for with 32kg Texels selling to £88 from A V Bailey, Cheshire. The lambs trade still remains very buoyant for the time of year, with all lambs forward today still averaging well in excess of the £100 mark. It was noticed today that as more numbers come on the market Nationwide buyers are being more selective and not as keen of leaner lambs.

PRIME HOGGS A handful of prime hoggs forward today saw the consignment of pure Texel tup hoggs from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping sell to £178, £170 and £155 twice.

CAST SHEEP Cast sheep trade today slightly easier with buyers cautious of over fat ewes. Leading the way today was a consignment of pure-bred Texel ewes selling to £153 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping, other Texel ewes sold to £138 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Charollais x ewes sold to £122 from Ripley St Thomas School, £120 from PD Anderton,

Scorton and £119 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Suffolk x ewes sold to £118 from J A Lambert, Out Rawcliffe and £116 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

Plenty of continental Suffolk x sheep easily selling in excess of the £110 mark. Mule ewes saw Rough Fell Mules sell to £96 from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham with Mule ewes to £92 from Wannop Farms, Heaton-With-Oxcliffe. Plenty of strong Mule ewes easily selling in excess of the £90 mark. Horned ewes sold to £94 for Lonks from S Bosworth, Burnley with Swaledale ewes topping at £79 from JR & J Gorst, Quernmore and Dalesbred to £77 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep 22th June 2021 SPRING LAMBS Junction 36’s weekly sale of prime lambs had a larger offering of 1032 spring lambs, selling to an overall market average of 242p/kg. This market average is very much in line with the national centres on the day. The trade today saw well finished lambs selling to a premium with the best average being 255p/kg for 45kg upward lambs. It was heavy weight lambs which led the way with a cracking consignment of Suffolks from Helen Newton, Levens selling to £149, £142.50, £139 and £137.

The consignment of heavy weight Texels from John Stott Jr, Crosscrake sold to £143 and £139. The run of heavy weight Texels from E Dodgson, Kendal sold a pen of 10 to £141 with other pens to £140. Plenty of heavy weight lambs still easily selling in excess of the £130 mark. Top p/kg this week was 283p for Texels from John Stott Jr with others to 282p/kg from AE & PC Capstick, Heversham. Plenty of pens of Farm Assured commercial lambs between 41-44kg continued to easily sell in excess of the £100 mark.

PRIME HOGGS There is still plenty of demand for prime hoggs, with well finished hoggs selling in excess of 200p/kg easily with proper fed hoggs selling between 230p/kg – 240p/kg. Heavy weight Texel hoggs sold to £116 from T Sharp, Oxenholme. Handy weighted hoggs sold to 249pkg or £104 for Texels from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston with others from the same good home selling Herdwicks to £101, Scotch Blackfaces to £99 and Swaledales to £97.

CAST SHEEP The weekly sale of cast sheep saw 350 forward, with all types selling to a competitive trade. Leading the way were pure Texel ewes selling to £142 from I L Dixon, Cantsfield with many of the pure-bred Texel ewes selling round the £130 mark, with an overall average for Texel ewes of £106. Zwartbles ewes from W B Winder & Co, Broughton-in- Furness sold to £136. Mule ewes were keenly bid for with the best regularly selling to the £110 mark, topping at £112 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe, with others selling to £110 from TM W & H Hodgson, Ulverston. Medium type, fit Mule ewes, regularly sold to the £110 mark.

A run of Cheviot Mule ewes from C Wilson, Witherslack sold to £110. Hill ewes once again sold to a strong trade with Cheviots selling to £125 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg with others selling to £114 from T Ellis, New Hutton. A wonderful run of Rough Fell ewes from H Chapman & Son, Middleton sold to £116 with other Rough Fell ewes selling to £97 from W J Dawson, Dent.

Strong Swaledale ewes were the strongest trade of the day with a top of £113 from TM W& H Hodgson, Ulverston with others selling to £105 from R Lawrence, Grange-Over-Sands. Medium Swaledale ewes regularly selling at the mid £70 mark.

A smaller show of cast rams were forward with all rams easily sold and many more are needed to fulfil our buyers’ requirements. Beltex sold to £138 from G C L Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale who also sold Texels to £130. Hill bred tups topped at £95 for a Herdwick from A E A Harrison, Kentmere.

J36 Sale of Prime, Cast, Store and Weaner Pigs - 22nd June 2021 There was a bumper entry of pigs today with 132 forward. Prime pigs full of meat were keenly bid for topping at £135 for a pen of four from W Stamper, Chipping, with prime hoggs selling to £128 fom GM & DJ Pye, Arkholme and many Prime pigs regularly selling to the £120 mark.

A big show of weaners were forward, with a selective trade, with buyers keen to purchase well grown weaners. Trade topped at £42 from D Broadman, Broughton. With many pens of weaners selling in the mid to late £30 mark.

J36 Calves, Stirks, Store Cattle & OTM Sale - Thursday 24th June 2021 CALVES A pleasing entry of 124 were forward with all calves selling to a flying trade from start to finish with Blue bulls twice flying to £600 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with other Blue bulls selling to £520 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth. All Blue bulls averaged an impressive £414.

A run of Charolais calves from Lawkland Hall peaked at £460 with Limousin bulls selling to the same price from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Native bred bulls were keenly bid for with Angus bulls twice selling to £440 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and JAH Walton & Son, Kirkby Stephen. A run of Hereford bulls from JS & IM Wilson & Son, Whitbeck sold to £370 with many from this run selling at £350 plus.

Heifer calves once again sold to a strong trade with Hereford heifers twice selling to £310 from Bambers Farm, Lancaster and JS & IM Wilson & Son, Whitbeck. HJK Robinson & Son finished off a wonderful day in the calf ring selling Angus heifers to £310; the same price was also achieved for Blue heifers from WH Kitching & Son, Hale. Many Continental calves were selling well into the £300s with some buyers leaving empty handed.

Black and whites once again all sold to a strong trade. Weaned black and white calves sold to £230 from WH Kitching & Son with other weaned calves selling to £215 from Lawkland Hall. Medium type rearing black and white bulls were regularly selling between the £120 - £150 mark with all forward averaging £110.

STIRKS All stirks forward once again sold to a fast trade at J36 with Blue bullocks selling to £860 from Whitestone Farms, Shap with Limousin bullocks selling to £820 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell, with other Limousin bullocks from the same home selling to £760.

A run of black and white stirks from PD & PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £690 with others from the same home selling to £620. STORES The heat was back on in the store cattle ring today at J36, with all vendors leaving pleased with their day’s trade, with many more cattle needed to fulfil a keen ringside of buyers.

The sale topped at £1290 for a British Blue bullock from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton, with other Blue bullocks selling to £1240 (12 months old) from R Airey & Son, Ravenstonedale. A full pen of Charolais bullocks from RJ & R Holden, Millom sold to £1250 with yearling Charolais bullocks selling to £1040 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth.

The heifer trade topped at £1200 for a Blue heifer from RJ & J Holden, Millom who also sold Charolais heifers to £1100.

TW Nelson & Son, Stainton sold a strong run of Limousin heifers to £1160. Yearling grazing heifers were a flying trade with Charolais selling to £1090 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth with other Charolais selling to £965 from AMS Robinson, Staveley.

Strong black and white bullocks sold to £940 from RJ & J Holden, Millom with yearling Fleckveih bullocks from RJ Corlett & Son, Cockermouth selling to £770. Belted Galloway bullocks sold to an impressive £880 from W Stamper, Chipping.

With a continued rise in the current beef price and the grass continuing to grow, demand for all store cattle is strong and vendors are advised to enter cattle with confidence for our next sale on Thursday 8th July 2021.

OTM's Cull cows continue to be a strong trade with an overall market average of 144p/kg with over half the entry being dairy cows.

Beef cows sold to a top price of 177.5p/kg for a Stabiliser cow from A Dixon & Son who sold others at 171.5p/kg.

Limousin x cows sold to 174.5p/kg from SJ & NS Wood, British Blue x to 167.5p/kg from AW & AM Clarke and Charolais x to 164.5p/kg from JC Walling & Son. Medium beef cows generally 150p/kg – 160p/kg with keen interest in cows suitable for further finishing.

Dairy cows sold to 161.5p/kg from J Scott & Co with others selling to 149.5p/kg for Fleckveih from JJ & MA Park & Son, medium dairy cows generally 120p/kg – 140p/kg.

Top grossing today was a Friesian cow from J Scott & Co achieving £1261 closely followed by a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son. OTM heifers sold to 179.5p/kg and £1051 for a Holstein Friesian from JM Barton & Son with others 145p/kg – 160p/kg.

A single OTM steer from JE Read achieved 139.5p/kg and £1145.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle and Store Cattle - 25th June 2021 CALVES AND STIRKS New records have been smashed for the monthly sale of stirks at Lancaster, as 12month-old pure Limousin bulls from W Salisbury, Treales sold to record prices of £1290, £1260, £1230 and £1220. It was great to have a busy ring side of buyers at Lancaster that ensured all specification of stirks were eagerly bid for, with vendors well pleased with the prices achieved.

Once again yearling grazing bullocks were keenly bid for and regularly selling in excess of the £800 mark. 10-month-old Angus bullocks sold to £850 and £830 from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. A pen of 4 British Blues at 11-month-old sold to £850 from R & J Parkinson, Preesall whom sold a pair of 9-month-old Angus bullocks to £800. 12 month old Simmental bullocks sold to £810 from SJ & A Hargreaves, Middleton. It was noticeable today that buyers are keener to purchase groups of cattle.

The heifer trade peaked at £800 for yearling Limousins from WJ & E Woodhouse, Nateby. Yearling British Blue heifers peaked at £730 from M & JM Redmayne, Balderstone. Younger stirks were in plenty of demand today, with 7-monthold Angus bullocks to £690 from R & A Jolleys, Cabus, with a pen of 7 Hereford bullocks at 6/7 months old selling to £670 from the same home. 6- month- old Angus bullocks from J & CW Metcalfe & Son, Quernmore sold to £640. Dairy bullocks saw Black and Whites sell to £760 and £740 from J Savage, Withnell followed by other Black and White bullocks to £660 from G I & M Faraday, Bleasdale.

Lancaster boasted a good number of calves once again with 90 forward. Trade remains strong but the edge is slightly off the middle tier beef calves.

Once again there was a cracking consignment of calves from J & G Thornley leading the way, selling British Blue and Charolais bulls to £500 with Angus’ achieving £480. Other noted prices from British Blue bull calves were £455 from Wannop Farms, £445 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel and £440 from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton. Other Angus bull calves sold to £440 from Wannop Farm and £425 from Cornthwaite Moors, Hambleton who sold Limousin bull calves to £425. Heifer calf trade peaked at £400 with Charolais from Wannop Farms with Angus’ achieving the same price from J & G Thornley. First time showing calves here was D & M Foster, Out Rawcliffe selling Limousin heifers to £370.

There were plenty of strong beef calves easily selling over the £300 mark. STORE CATTLE Lancaster Auction Mart offered a large entry of 156 stores forward this week selling to another impressive market average of £1138. Once again short keep cattle were in the biggest demand at Lancaster and eagerly bid for. Leading the way was a pen of 5 Angus bullocks from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton selling to £1410. This was closely followed by a pen of 4 Angus bullocks to £1400 from J Tattersall, Leyland.

Other noted prices for Angus bullocks were £1360 from RG & B Lewis, Kirkby Lonsdale, £1350 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn and £1340 from J Hesketh, Hutton. British Blue heifers peaked at £1260 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling. Angus heifers sold to £1250 from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall whom sold British Blues to £1200. Other heifers that achieved the £1200 mark were British Blues from R & D Kellet, Cockerham.

Dairy Bullocks peaked at £1200 for Norwegian Reds and £1190 for Fleckvieh from J & H Bland & Son, Levens.

Montbeliarde bullocks peaked at £1170 from ID Sharples, Kirkham. Friesian bullocks peaked at £1130 for a pen of 5 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton with another pen of 5 from the same home achieving £1110.

OTM CATTLE There was a plainer show of cows on offer today at Lancaster, with numbers remaining firm for the time of year, with 111 forward. The trade was sharper with a strong average of 148p/kg especially considering the large number of parlour cows forward.

Good confirmation beef cows were in plenty of demand today in Lancaster with British Blue cows peaking at 214.5p/kg and 209.5p/kg grossing at £1439 from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Limousin cows peaked at 211.5p/kg or £1205 from J D & A H Coates, Cowan Bridge with other Limousin cows to 207.5p/kg or £1294 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead.

OTM steers were eagerly bid for with Angus’ selling to 211.5p/kg, with British Blues twice achieving 204.5p/kg from T & E Burrow, Slyne with these grossing at £1431, £1373, £1353.

OTM dairy heifers sold to a top of 197.5p/kg or £1017 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel with others to 194.5p/kg from Wannop Farms, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Best dairy cows often sold between 160-170p/kg with the next grade down selling between 140-155p/kg and plain types between 110-125p/kg. Dairy cows today peaked at £1319 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham with other noted prices for dairy cows being £1271 from J K & B Birkett, Morecambe. With Black and Whites to £1228 from CJ & MH Parry, Cockerham and £1200 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor, with too many good cows to mention selling over the £1100 mark.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Online Machinery Sale OVER 1400 LOTS SOLD AT POPULAR MONTHLY MACHINERY SALE North West Auctions held its popular monthly collective machinery sale, which once again attracted a large entry of items with an ever-increasing level of buyer interest and several lots selling to overseas customers. This sale boasted a line up of over 30 tractors, diggers and vehicles, both vintage and modern.

A New Holland TS90 4WD direct from a local farmer achieved £14,500, with a Case CX100 also direct from another local farmer achieving £9500. A Massey Ferguson 3080 sold at £4600, with older tractors selling at £3600 for a Massey Ferguson 35, International 685 complete with loader £1850, David Brown 996 complete with loader £1300. Plant vehicles sold to £12,500 for a JCB 5200-40 loadall, £5000 for a mini digger, £4600 for a JCB mini digger and £4400 for a JCB 2CX. Vehicles sold to £2650 for a DAF 7.5 tone lorry, £1450 for a Suzuki Carry Van, £920 Landrover Discovery, £740 Suzuki Vitara. Several ATV’s and Gators were forward selling to £2900 for a Kawasaki Mule, £1750 Honda quad bike and £1400 for a Yamaha quad.

Machinery items and equipment continue to attract keen interest, with well-maintained items and seasonal equipment always in demand and easily sold. A Conor 1600 tanker achieved £4200, Lely rake £2800, post knocker £2500, Vicon rake £2400, Pottinger silage wagon £2300, Wessex paddock sweeper £1500, Abbey muck spreader £1500 and Amazone fertilizer spreader also selling at £1500.

Over 40 trailers of all shapes and sizes were offered for sale and sold to £4100 for a low loader plant trailer, £2700 for an Ifor Williams flatbed trailer, £1550 Graham Edwards livestock trailer, £1550 for an 8 tone tipping trailer, £1500 for a Archated bale trailer, £1450 for a 6 tone tipping trailer and £1400 for a small sheep/calf trailer.

Other items of interest included a Lunar caravan achieving £3100, diesel generator/pump £1050, Rolls Royce generator £800, calf creep feeder £620, portable water tanks £620, cement mixer £550 and card baler £520.
