Weekly Report and Newsletter - 1st October Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 27th September A small entry of 629 prime lambs forward today which was met with strong demand from Lancasters busy ring side of buyers, which also included a new face this week. There was an overall market average of 218p/kg.

Leading the way this week was A&E Clarkson, Thurnham selling Texel lambs to £124 or 276p/kg. Beltex lambs sold to 261p/kg or £115 from JS Horner, Ingleton. Heavy weight lambs continue to meet plenty of demand, with 50kg Texels selling to £119 from CG Redmayne, Samlesbury, followed by others to £117 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Plenty of pens of heavy weight lambs sold between £110-£116. Handy weighted lambs saw the trade depended upon their quality and finish, with nicer types often selling to 220p/kg and beyond. There was more hill bred lambs forward today, which saw 52kg Mules sell to £109 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, with 51kg Mules £108.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale and Masham lambs from the same home selling to £107.

The cast sheep trade remains buoyant, with buyers in the market eager to purchase all specification. Texel ewes led the way selling to £124 and £114 from TR Prickett, New Hutton. Plenty of Continental ewes selling to above the £100 mark. Mule ewes peaked at £98 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead with plenty of strong pens selling around the £90 mark. Horned ewes peaked at £82 for Swaledales from S Dickinson, Ellel.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 28th September 2021 An increased number of prime lambs forward this week at J36 were met with increased demand from the ring of buyers at J36 this week. buyers eager to purchase well finished lambs with vendors whom had fed them hard feed receiving the benefit of a stronger trade with leaner types meeting realisation. There were an entry of 1317 prime lambs selling to an overall market average of 228p/kg to include a large number of mules and hill bred lambs.

Once again at J36 them well finished heavy weight lambs continue to be in big demand and commanding a strong trade. leading the way was a consignment of heavy weight lambs from WT Whitaker and Son, Nether Kellet selling to £143 with Suffolk lambs with Texel’s from the same home selling to £138 with this consignment of 30 lambs averaging £139. Heavy weight Texel lambs this week peaked at £138.50 from JA Bennett, Longsleddale.

Other leading prices for heavy weight Texel lambs was £135.50 from R &EA Gardner, Brigsteer at 54kg with other Texel’s to £135 from A Holden, Burton in Kendal and WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Plenty of pens of heavy weight lambs selling in excess of the £125 mark with all heavy weight lambs forward sold to an average of 236p/kg.

There were more better confirmation lambs forward today meeting an increased demand from our buyers for them better types of lambs. Beltex lambs sold to 277p/kg from RJ Potter, Tebay followed by others to 265p/kg from WS Burrow and Sons, Silverdale. Plenty them better confirmation lambs selling in the region of 260p/kg.

Handy weighted lambs selling between £5 and £10 up on the week. Well finished light lambs short in number and in strong demand in which more could of easily been sold to the advantage of the vendors.

Great to have a larger entry of mules forward today and being eagerly bid for. Mule peaked at £108 weighing 50kg from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale followed by 48kg Mules to £104 from GA & M Robinson, Kendal. All mules forward averaged 210p/kg.

A bumper entry of 800 cast ewes were forward with several new buyers in attendance, ensuring all types were dear on the week. JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens led the way in the cast sheep ring selling Charollais to £137 with the best of the Texels selling to £134 from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg with other Terxels from selling to £130 from D&J Woof, Sedbergh. Many of the best Texel ewes sold between the £120 and £125 mark. A run of Zwartble ewes from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibbthwaite. sold to £121 and £110. Mule ewes were considerably dearer on the week

with the best peaking at £110 from AW Crowe, Grange over Sands with other Mules selling to £108 from DM Bargh, Morecambe. Medium type Mule ewes were regularly selling well above the £80 mark. Hill bred sheep were keenly bid for, with a full pen of Cheviot ewes selling to £90 from WL&FD Richards, Beckside. A strong run of Swaledale ewes from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg which sold to a top of £78. Medium fit Swaledale ewes sold to the mid to late fifty mark. Dalesbred ewes sold to a top of £73 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor.

A small show of cast rams were forward with Texels selling to £152 twice from GR Wilson, Natland and Charollais selling to £135 from J&L Tyson, Milnthorpe. J36 has an impressive ring side of buyers, who can cater for all types and finish of sheep.

PORKY TUESDAYS The second pig sale of the month saw Prime gilts from W Stamper sell to £140 and £110 with others from the same home selling at 127p/kg and 121p/kg.

Lighter weight Prime pigs from D Boardman sold to 115p/kg.

Cull sows sold to £82 and 28p/kg.

There was a large number of weaners forward today selling to £34 for Gloucester Old Spot x from MM & LK Whitley & Son who sold others at £29.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Store and OTM Cattle - 30th September 2021 Today saw a massive entry of 152 calves forward, with quality and strength selling to a huge premium. British Blue bulls sold twice to £440 from JW&T Sharp, Lyth and GCL Stephenson, Kirby Lonsdale who also sold Limousin bulls to £420. Continental bred bulls were regularly selling in the mid to late £300 mark. Bambers Farm, Cockerham sold a run of Simmental bull calves to a top of £385. Native bred bull calves were once again keenly bid for at Junction 36. Hereford bulls led the way selling to £410 from J&SA Barton, Barnacre. A young show of Angus bulls were forward with a lovely run from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington selling to £320 and £300 twice.

Heifer calves sold to a top of £385 for a British Blue from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. Other British Blue heifers sold to £380 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale. All British Blue heifers forward today averaged £320. A selective trade for all native heifers, with buyers looking for well reared calves. Aberdeen Angus’s sold to a top of £280 from CM&CS Chapplehow, Penrith. A mixture of dairy bred bulls were forward, with a wonderful run of Montbeliardes bulls from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck selling to £260 and £235. Fleckviehs sold to a top of £170 from RG&JL Clark, Endmoor. A young show of Black and Whites were forward at junction 36 with the top price being £140 form RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington, medium types regularly sold between the £70-85 mark, with an overall average of £52.

One hundred stirks were forward for our regular buyers, strong well done stirks sold to a sharp trade, with weathered stirks harder to place. Loyal consigner D Wightman & A Mason, Burton in Kendal topped the trade selling British Blue steers to £775. Other British Blue bullocks sold to £750 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. A run of Montbeliarde bullocks from PD&PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £660. British Blue heifer stirks were once again keenly bid for again at Junction 36 selling to a top of £695 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Others sold to £670 from PD&PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal. Limousin heifers sold to £670 from J&S Brakewell, Ulverston. Please will stirk vendors entre there cattle for the catalogue, to ensure they are well advertised.

A seasonal show of store cattle were forward, with once again quality selling well. The consignment from S&M Cooper, Ulverston sold to £1335 for a pair of Limousin bullocks with Aberdeen Angus bullocks from the same good home selling to £1145. Yearling bullocks were regularly selling either side of the £1000 mark. Store heifers would sell to the trade of the day, Charolais sold to £1130 from RJ&R Holden, Millom. British Blues heifers sold to £1120 from A Cottam, Crossthwaite. Aberdeen Angus heifers topped twice at £1100 from S&M Cooper, Ulverston and J Twigg, Grange over Sands. A nice run of Hereford heifers from JK&A Bowness & Son, Milnthorpe sold to £1080 and £1030. Today saw an entry of sixty cast cows forward, with a large quantity of parlour cows. Continental cows still added up to a nice price, an Aberdeen Angus cow from RJ Holden, Broughton in Furness sold to £1422. Jenkin Cragg Farms saw a good run of fed Friesian cowssell to a top of £1120, with fed Friesian cows regularly selling at 128130p/kg, parlour cows were either side of the 100p/kg mark.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, Store and OTM Cattle - 1st October 2021 The weekly sale of calves and weanlings saw a mixed entry forward which were met with a mixed trade. The trade for good quality calves remains strong. The middle quality Continental bulls, heifers and native bulls remain in plenty of demand and regularly achieving £300 and more, with native heifers taking a drop as many more come out on to the market as many dairy herds are calving heifers. The trade for Black and White bull calves remains firm.

Once again, a cracking run of British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham sold bulls to £480 and £440 and heifers to £420 and £400. Other leading prices were £455 for six week old British Blue bulls from V&EJ Chadwick & Son, Sowerby, followed by £420 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore. A much-admired British Blue heifer sold to £400 at six-week-old from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock. A run of Angus’s from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe sold to £420 and £410. Dairy bull calves saw Swedish Reds sell to £130 from AW&AM Park & Sons, Ellel, with Black and Whites to £125 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham and plenty more selling round the £100 mark. A run of Black and white bull stirks at 4-5 month old from Hannah Kent, Cockerham sold to £320 and £300.

Lancaster had an increased entry of over 300 cattle forward once again this week, with the market average still well in excess of £1000 a head. The change in the weather and Autumn coming fast, vendors are quickly trying to offload cattle before the land becomes to wet. The entry of stores today saw a full variety as to be expected, with all eagerly bid for despite the current external ongoing factors within the industry.

Leading the way today was a cracking Limousin x heifer from TE JS & SA Curruthers, Underbarrow selling to £1550. This was followed by some strong runs of short keep bullocks, which peaked at £1430 for a pen of three Charolais from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale. Other leading prices for Continental bullocks was Limousins selling to £1380 from RW & EE Sudell & Son, Kirkland. Native cattle always demand a strong trade at Lancaster selling to £1390 for Aberdeen Angus’s from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet, with others to £1380 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall and a pen of four to the same price from J Hesketh, Hutton. This was closely followed by £1360 for a pen of three from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth. Many more pens of strong bullocks sold around the £1300 mark. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1360 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse with Black and White feeding heifers peaking at £1170 from JR Pye, Barton.

As to be expected for this time of year a good number of 122 cows forward, as people begin to off load waif and strays. Considering all that’s happening at the moment, there was a very respectable overall market average of 131p/kg. OTM heifers this week led the way, selling to a top of 229.5p/kg or £1310 for a Limousin heifer

consigned by David Preston, Caton. This was closely followed by a British Blue heifer selling to 214.5p/kg from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. OTM steers peaked at 194.5p.kg for Herefords from J Lamb, Old Glasson.

Limousin cast cows led the way selling to 199.5p/kg or £1354 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Black and White OTM heifers sold to a top of 184.5p/kg for £1254 from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton, with other best fleshed once again regularly selling around the 180p/kg mark. Plenty of dairy cows today regularly sold between 130-140p/kg with best ones selling in excess of this mark.
