건축 측량 : 24층은 도대체 얼마나 높은가? (진보련을 기억하며) Building Measure: How high is the 24th Floor?

소형 카메라 한 대를 건물을 향하게 로프로 묶어 24층에 위치한 창문에서 지면에 닿을 때까지 수직 하강시키는 과정을 통해 건물 표면을 기록했다. 나는 상하이의 여러 건물 중 7개 고층건물에서 별도로 이러한 "측량"을 진행했다. 이 작품은 홍콩 여배우 진보련을 기념하기 위해 제작한 것이다. 2002년 7월 31일 진보련은 상하이 징안(靜安)구 난양(南阳)로에 위치한 모 아파트 24층에서 투신자살했으며, 이 작품을 통해 제기하고 싶었던 문제는 오늘날 문명의 상징이 되어버린 고층 건물이라는 것이 도시 속 개인에게 갖는 의미는 무엇이며 추상적 상징과도 같은 건물에 우리 신체와 직접적으로 관련된 육체성을 부여하고자 했다. 영상에서 건물이 갖는 물리적 높이는 시간적 이행을 통해 드러난다.

This video was inspired by Hong Kong film actress Pauline Chen committed suicide by jumping off a high-rise building in Shanghai. What I am concerned about is: What does the high-rise mean for an individual in the city. Has it become one of the symbols of today’s civilization? What does a high-rise mean to body? I expect that this abstract symbol could be changed to a corporeal one between which a direct relation with our occurs. This project was planned to be presented at the height of the 24th floor via a temporal passage. A mini-home digital video, which is tied to one end of a rope, descends perpendicularly to the ground from out of the window on the 24th floor. The camera faces the building and shoots its surface during the descent. For this video, I chosen seven high-rises in Shanghai.
