A VERY WARM WELCOME to the latest club magazine and a belated Happy New Year to all. Well, as most of you know by now, January to March is my busy period at work and not much going on in my life apart from work stuff only stopping for food and bathroom!
However, I have been working on my own Sunbeam Lotus as and when I can and am currently using it as a final template for the ethanol proof fuel line kit we will soon be able
to supply. I have two volunteers waiting for trial fit on a S1 & S2 just to make sure it will be as easy as I am trying to make it be for everyone.
I also wanted to be sure the replacement fittings were 100% up to the job and that I was doing the right thing by crimping on the ends so members don’t have to – pressure testing then came up ! The only fittings to utilise a jubilee clip is the fuel filter which sits on the chassis leg just before the SU pump, which is a service item that gets replaced anyhow. I’m trying my best to get this done as quickly as I can, but my workload until the end of March is mental although this is when I hope to have them ready to ship out.
Mark Higman has arranged events efficiently (but not effortlessly) and it looks like 2023 will be another superb year for club events. Please head onto Mark’s write up
and firm up the dates in your diaries. I’d like to thank Mark for his efforts. The first year is never easy, then it kind of works better once you get a year into the events position.
As I write this, the NEC Restoration Show will be upon us and I thank Mark and the rest of the committee for arranging this all, particularly that this is Mark’s first time at organising this and has managed to get us a great spot and despite no members offering up their cars, Mark has sourced plenty for the stand.
So back to my teaser photo of a distributor. I have secured a pre-programmed replacement distributor which can be programmed with a custom ignition curve (via Bluetooth phone app). I will be testing this on my own car. This will also work with any ignition kit you may have installed, such as MSD or Lumentition. This distributor has the
added benefit of being an immobiliser and will not give a signal unless the mobile phone of the driver is present. Pretty cool bonus. Of course, you don’t need to have the feature active if you don’t want to and you won’t need to program the ignition curve unless you need to tweak it a bit.
Mats have been selling well. But by chance I have found another supplier who could be a little cheaper but has offered custom embroidery on the mats at an extra cost. So those of you who want to wipe your shoes on a mat saying SUNBEAM LOTUS or AVON or anything else you want embroidered, get your wallets out. I will get some samples by the next issue of the club magazine.
PERRY C. ANTONIOU CHAIRMAN MEMBER NO. 750YES, I KNOW, I sent an email to all members some time ago, explaining that price increases by our printer (plus almost certain increases in postage coming very soon) had led the committee to question whether we could continue to post hard copies of the mag to everyone on the mailing list, or make digital copies more widely available, or reduce the number of mags we produce, or increase membership fees, or we continue as now & absorb the increased costs? I also suggested that we might commence any changes with this issue, well here we are with a “normal” printed version for everyone who normally took this option!
In fact we simply haven’t been able to fit in a committee meeting in the last month or two, so the discussion is still undecided, but here’s a brief analysis of the actual returns I received from members :-
party website as now, but this still needs to be confirmed.
With all this information the committee still need to make a decision, but another indication from the returns is that probably getting on for half of the emails I sent out went to spam, & were probably never even read (also some of the email addresses on the membership records are incorrect – every member has an opportunity to check this once a year on renewal – so please let me know if the address is incorrect – membership@sunbeamlotus.com)
As I type this there are still 55 membership renewals nearly a month overdue from the January list, & by the time this mag is delivered I will have sent out email reminders (hoping that the message is actually read!) If you are one of these, then please get it done asap, so that I’m not involved in further unnecessary work. Thanks very much.
Current membership is 359 (full members –that doesn’t include joint / family members) & a warm welcome to all the recent new members. Hope to see you at a Club event in 2023.
So, just over 30% of the membership actually indicated that they were ok to receive an electronic version of the mag only.
A number of those members who wanted to continue with the printed magazine actually stated that they would be prepared to pay an increased annual membership fee in order to cover the higher costs.
Part of the potential change was also that mags would be available to read (& stored) on the Club website, & not on an ad laden third
On the money front the bank balance continues to be healthy, but I am aware that we should be restocking some of the more regularly required parts, so please let Richard Blackburn (parts@sunbeamlotus.com) know of whatever it is that you need. There are minimum order levels required for a lot of what we buy, & unless we have these then we cannot place orders.
As always, best regards to all, & thank you very much for you ongoing support.
Dave Merlane (No.34)WHILE PRODUCING A PRODUCTION CERTIFICATE for a member recently I had to write a note about the chassis number and change of company name, and just a few days later another member then quizzed me about this very subject. I think we have given breakdowns of the VIN here before on more than one occasion but perhaps an update (if you can indeed update something that hasn’t changed in 40 years…) might be due. So here it is:
Pre-production Sunbeam Lotus were built in 1979 model year (“9” series), but in late 1978. Serial numbers for 79MY had reset to start at 100000, just as they had done the previous model year. VINs commenced R4DCD9L, although some cars had these transposed to R4DCY9L when the registration paperwork was submitted (the Y signifying the Lotus model, which hadn’t existed when the car bodies had been assembled).
Production of Sunbeam Lotus commenced in March 1979, still within the 79MY but at a much later serial number (around 158000). VINs commenced R4DCY9L.
Model Year change was in July 1979, when 1980MY cars began (“A” series). These started at serial number 200000. VINs commenced R4DCYAL, still on Chrysler United Kingdom Ltd chassis plates. On January 1st 1980, the serial number restarted at 300000, still on 80MY. The company name changed to Talbot Motor Company Ltd, and this is reflected in the name on the
ID plate changing and the first letter of the VIN changing from R to T. VINs commenced T4DCYAL.
July 1980 saw a change to 1981MY (“B” series), when serial numbers started at 400000. VINs commenced T4DCYBL.
For January 1981, the serial number restarted at 400000. VINs continued to start T4DCYBL. Production stopped in May 1981 halfway through 420000 serial numbers, although regular Sunbeam production went up to 430000.
It is to be noted that the serial numbers were assigned consecutively for all Sunbeam and Avenger models. Sunbeam Lotus were built in batches within these numbers, in varying quantities; the final run of Moonstone cars were built in two large batches. All dates mentioned are for production; registration is another matter. You might have a 1980 model year car built in 1979 but not registered until 1981! The Year of Manufacture for this example would be 1979. Some chassis numbers are recorded incorrectly by DVLA (e.g. missing a letter), usually as a result of incorrect filing by the original dealer; this can be corrected, and we can help with this if anyone has a car affected in this way.
Graeme LawtonDATE FOR YOUR DIARY
SUNDAY 18th JUNE
PROPOSED PROVISIONAL ITINERARY:
1. Meet in Coventry Sunday morning. A brief tour of bygone motoring locations
2. Drive towards Nuneaton; stopping for lunch.
3. Arrive Arbury early afternoon; talk from Leon Gibbs; tour the site; photographs and home
THE DAY WILL BE AN OPEN INVITATION TO EVERYONE AND ANYONE THAT OWNS A TALBOT.
Updates will be issued on the clubs Facebook page and Website Forum page.
AS ALL OF YOU WITH A SERIES 2 MIRROR KNOW, the little plastic part breaks off. Club member Tony ‘Skid’ Nash has manufacture a repair kit made of brass parts which replaces the broken unit. I tested one myself on a broken mirror and Graeme Lawton also repaired one of his own mirrors. It’s simple to do, with the most difficult part only being the removal of the mirror
body from the housing. Some care, warm water and patience is all you need. I’m a butcher and managed to do it. Graeme is a lot less technical and he also managed to do it. Look at the photos to see which part fails and can now be replaced. Get in touch with Richard on parts@ sunbeamlotus.com and we will let you know more information.

WHILST I FULLY APPRECIATE FELLOW COMMITTEE MEMBERS “have my back”. As a complete newbie, I was hoping for encouragement and support from some of the other 330 of you. My Sunbeam ownership has always been one of trying to keep as many
Sunbeams on the road as possible. But now I find myself devoting my enthusiasm; time and money to YOU and its bloody hard work!
We placed a full-page plea in the last magazine. Asking for your help to provide a suitable car and/or assistance with our first
event of the year. Response nil. We provided a code to be quoted when buying tickets; enabling discount on entrance and parking. Response nil.
However, despite your total lack of enthusiasm. Preparations for the NEC in March are all but there. I’d very much like to sincerely thank Richard for helping transport and set-up for me on the Thursday. I’m sure he thought I was and should oversee the hot potato now and so his, and the other committee members, offer to help, is above and beyond. Thank you all.
Our second outing of the year is Castle Donnington at the end of April. The Donnington Festival is on all weekend, but we are only there on the Sunday; in the hope we can consolidate a good attendance. This will be the first time in 2023 you have an opportunity to display your Sunbeam on a SLOC stand. Donnington Historic Festival have decided (not us) to offer all club members displaying their Sunbeam on the SLOC stand a 50% discount. This offer does NOT apply for members attending without a Sunbeam.
Please go to https://www.doningtonhistoric. com/how-to-book---registered-clubs
which will allow your Sunbeam and one passenger to be on the club display. The next thing to do, is let me know you’ve booked. I’ve provisionally asked for ten car spaces, but this can be increased if I notify D.H.F. by 31st March. The web site will also help with where it is; what time to arrive and will there be any toilet roll in the porta loos. This is the most northern SLOC event I’m organising and so I hope we can put a serious and sensible display of Sunbeams out for that day please.
I appreciate our AGM on the 27th May,
at Club Lotus Track Day, is already on your calendar and in your phone. This is a twoline whip day. Not only can you have a fantastic day at Castle Combe, but entrance courtesy of Club Lotus is completely free. The only charge will be if you wish to take your car on the track. Gates open at 07:30hrs. The track opens at 09:00hrs. The AGM starts at 14:00hrs in the drivers’ briefing room. Please take this opportunity to have your say in the future of your club and call me a Knobber to my face.
You may have noticed that Rally Day in September is missing from the above list. Last year Rally Day was in September; I assumed it would be again; but they’ve moved it to Saturday 1st July? Now it wouldn’t be impossible for us to squeeze this in, but do you want to support it? A Club Stand ticket is £27.50 or Club Member ticket £30, admitting your car and one passenger. Sunbeams and other Lotuses on the club stand. Everything else in the public car park. BUT are you seriously interested. I must register our interest with Castle Combe and commit to at least six Club Stand cars. If you are interested? Have a good look at the website and then phone me on 01794 322293; message me 07920 538498; or email events@sunbeamlotus.com
Thank you,
MARK HIGMAN SLOC950NEW! We have reproduced the wallet to keep your service book safe, and if you do not have one of those, we have had some of those made as well! Licensed by Lotus themselves, the wallet features the same design as the original, albeit with subtly smaller printing to avoid any confusion with original examples. The service book is a complete makeover of the original 1980 version (earlier cars came
with a Chrysler version but if you had bought a replacement book it would invariably have been the Talbot version). Following the same design, it features all of the useful pages from the original that provide information on servicing your car but without pages relating to warranty, etc. The service record section has been extended to cover up to 200,000 miles. These can be used to continue your service records from your original book, or if you never had one, to start from whenever you began servicing your car. Although they look like a period service book, they are different enough
so as not to be mistaken for an original.
To complete the pack, we also have a reproduction of the handbook supplement for Sunbeam Lotus, covering all years of car. All three items are available exclusively to SLOC members for a package price of only £30. Postage at £2 in the UK.
Inspired by the yellow stickers fitted to export models (as required by legislation in certain countries, no doubt), we have produced our very own version for application to UK cars. Using recommended pressures from the handbook (24psi for normal running) and a car outline that looks rather more like a Sunbeam than the original version, we have made ours in black text on white vinyl, sized to fit on the B pillar above the door lock. These are certainly not a requirement for that authentic period look but are a bit of fun while also
being a useful reminder of the required pressure – whether that be for your benefit or your service garage. £3 plus postage.
We can now provide decals to freshen up any tired SUNBEAM badge on the back of your series 1 car. Easy to apply, once you have cleaned up the badge. £5 each.
We can supply chrome vinyl decals to freshen up the badges on your series 2 car. Easy to apply (although the Sunbeam is a little trickier…) we will need to know the markings on the back of each badge to ensure we supply the correct decal. £10 each or £25 for a set of three.
Yes, you read that correctly, now in stock featuring artwork of all production variants of the glorious Sunbeam Lotus. 100% cotton. Perfect to dry dishes, car parts or even just to pin to the wall of your garage. Only £8 to members, plus postage.
New into stock, we have a new line of garment and very nice quality it is, too. Featuring the club logo on the chest, it can be yours for only £25 plus postage. We have a limited range of sizes in stock, all in black; please provide chest size to help us select the best size for you.
Also in stock we have some rather lovely and warm hoodies. These are quality garments, featuring exclusive designs of a road car (several versions available, others available to order) with a ghosted rally car alongside. £50 plus postage; please provide chest size to help us select the best size for you, Burgundy & Grey in stock.

They look like new and will transform the tired and probable MOT failure headlights that all S2 cars have by now. They are sold on an exchange basis, we can tell you how to separate the glass from the shell and you can exchange your tired and rusty shells yourself. We supply clear and concise instructions on how to dismantle the lights along with guidance as to the correct glass sealer you would need to put them together. Let’s face it, we own a lotus Sunbeam, so most of us have the capability to do the upgrade ourselves. The price for a pair is £330.00 inc. postage. This would normally cost you £200.00 per headlight, We would need to do them in batches of at least a dozen to keep the price we have. Get in touch with Mike Trim and grab yourself a pair.
