F

irst of all, it’s been my deepest sorrow after following all the news about the massive earthquake that struck Nepal and the neighboring countries. I would like to express my sincere condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones and those who have been affected as a result of this tragedy. We also have to take our hats off to anyone brave enough to head off to help Nepal that was once a traveler’s dream.

Going back further in time, I recall one of Thailand’s biggest natural disasters – Tsunami occurring in December, 2004. Local and international actors substantially provided large amounts of capital and assistance to enable the recovery and reconstruction of several areas in southern Thailand. To date, Thailand is almost reminiscent of what it was before the tsunami struck. As for Nepal, it definitely takes some time to recover, but we strongly hope things will get better in Nepal soon.

Back to the third issue of 24 Life Magazine, we put so many different stories about travel destinations inside and outside Asia. Our 24Life Team would only like to give you more options than you think. As for us, no matter how often we travel or how many trips we make in any given year, we look forward to each and every journey with a sense of anticipation and excitement. We always find there’s something new to discover, even in the same towns we’ve been before. Indeed, Southeast Asia is still our main focus, but at the same time it can be a point of departure for a trip outside the region. For example, you can easily fly from Bangkok to Athens as Bangkok is a hub of the Southeast Asian region. The easy access to international flights is something we want to present in this issue, but there are also other interesting stories about Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai – a restaurant or hotel that wasn’t there before, a hidden gem with that we’d overlooked, or perhaps a well-known attraction that we simply hadn’t had time to take in last time around. All information contained herein is gathered from our reliable editorial team.

he 2015 Samui Regatta took place between May 23rd and 30th, 2015 on Samui Island, one of the most popular water sports destinations in Southeast Asia.

I started my first day checking out the most amazing engineering of ancient Greece at the Parthenon, a temple situated on the Acropolis. I took a metro to Acropolis station and then took a left to rocky road up to the mountain. There you will see a gigantic marble mountain believed

The Parthenon is a temple built in the golden age of ancient Greece and dedicated to goddess Athena.

That’s why you can see a hugestatue of Athena herein. After Athens had declined, Persians and Venetians invaded and destroyed the Parthenon.

The Greek government has been comprehensively renovating the temple until now.

It is believed that the renovation of the Parthenon will take in a minimum of 20 years. Up here is also the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. It was a large covered theater built in the second century AD. Presently, this place is still popular for occasional plays, concerts, and other events.

After the Pathenon, I walked down to the oldest section of Athens called the Plaka. The Plaka features a number of restaurants, souvenir and boutique shops, and cafes. To some extent this place feels like Khao San Road in Thailand. This is probably because there are a lot of locals and tourists alike. If you want to get a cheap room in town, the Plaka also boasts a lot of budget guesthouses. There are also several neoclassic-style buildings offering outdoor cafes from which you can easily get tasty Greek salad, lamb kebab, and local beer named Mythos. Give it a try if you have time to stop by.

If walk a few minutes away from the Plaka, you will find Syntagma Square, the most important square in Athens. It is situated by the Hellenic Parliament Building and constantly crowded with locals and foreigners. Not only does the square have a central fountain, several statues and lots of green trees where people can rest at, but it is also a place where you can see changing of the guards in front of the Parliament. This attracts a large number of visitors because they can grab one of the best shots with the guards wearing Greek national costume. In addition, here is also a hub of public transportation and education in the city.

Several young energetic students walk pass you to their universities while you’re on your way to the attractions nearby, such as the national library and the National Archaeological Museum.

The National Archaeological Museum is the largest museum in Greece and one of world’s greatest museums. Although its original purpose was to secure all the findings from the nineteenth century excavations in and around Athens, recently it has been enriched with more than 20,000 exhibits from all over Greece. I would say some people might be able to spend the whole day walking in this place. It can really be a treat to see the ancient statues, pottery, jewelry, weapons, and many others if you are a big fan of ancient history. Most of the stuff displayed in this museum may give you some panoramic ideas about the ancient Greek and its civilization more or less.

My most impressive spots are hidden downstairs.

The golden Mask of Agamemnon, the legendary Greek leader during the Trojan War who was allegedly buried at Mycenae. You should also check out the Sculpture Collection of the Museum. It presents the development of Greek sculpture with very unique artworks. The display is set out in chronological order and type, which is easy for the visitors to understand the development from the origins of large-scale sculpture to the Late Roman period.

The Temple of Poseidon at Sounion is the last destination I would recommend. This should be a half-day trip out of Athens. The temple is perched on the height of the cape and dedicated to the god of the sea named Poseidon. All sailors who arrive in Athens can see Poseidon as the first welcome spot. The beauty of this temple is on its remains, but the best part of the day to be here is before sunset. Taking a picture of ancient Greek debris at this time is really challenging to your shooting skill. If it turns out great, you surely can be proud of having an amazing shot with a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea.

I spent my first day doing some quick exploration around Causeway Bay and Central Hong Kong – starting at The Landmark, a shopping mall home to more than 200 boutiques spread out on a 4-story building. Though it’s full of high-end shops, it’s still a cool spot for window shopping.

The Landmark is also connected with IFC and IFC 2 Shopping Malls where so many locals come for a wide selection of name-brand products, including Zara, a Spanish clothing brand popular among international teens.

Currently, there are a few more shopping spots, such as Shueng Wan and SoGo where you probably find a lot of stuff as in other shopping malls. Some people said that, “you’ll never go hungry in Hong Kong”, as there are a great number of cafés and restaurants awaiting you. Just keep walking, you will find many spots between the dirt cheap eats and budget-busting blowouts, somewhere the quality and quantity of the food matches your budget. Once I got lost in the PMQ full of creative designer shops, pop up stores, and eateries.

Prices are reasonable, but don’t shop too much before getting everything on your wish lists.

Though shopping was the main activity during my stay in Hong Kong, I didn’t forget to visit Aqua Luna, a Chinese Junk leisure cruise operator in Victoria Harbor. Hong Kong never seems to sleep in the night, it slows down a little with the neon lights lighting up the surrounding night sky. It’s a good idea to come to Aqua Luna to see a full 360-degree view of the whole skyline around you. I’m not sure if any of you would like to take an evening cruise running around 45 minutes. This trip costs almost $200 and offers a complementary drink and lounge beds for guests. It was out of my budget I’d rather take pictures on-shore.

Teakha (Tai Ping Shan Street, Sheung Wan – Hong Kong) You can have freshly brewed tea and in-house pastries in an always-busy, pretty tea café named Teakha. Ask the young locals how to get there, this place is very popular among them.

A stylish, newish Spanish gin-tonic hangout spot located in Sai Ying Pun. Walking through its iconic red doors, following the green handrail to a large open “living room”, you are welcomed to a Mediterranean-inspired bar. Here you can especially feel nostalgic around several new people who seemingly don’t want the night to end the soonest. Try “G’Vine Floraison”made from gin mixed with Japanese Wilkinson tonic and grapes.

It tastes sweet yet smooth after the first sip. Her face is covered with a layer of joss paper (literally gold paper) to create the mask. She couldn’t move or talk during this process, but she was still relaxed. In the end, everybody was satisfied with the result.

It was part of a project promoting a series of accessories brand “TUSKNEOTRIBAL RAINBOW WARRIOR S/ S15 COLLECTION”. Labhat Patrick is an Accessories Designer who created this interesting collection by using a sophisticated combination of colors and several elements.

James Pisuto was a Photographer, while Anirut Manprapan was a Project Stylist. He picked up proper shoes and clothes, allowing the accessories to be shown on the model in the best way. Makeup techniques were developed by Irina Mezentseva after listening to what the designer really wanted.

She changed makeup styles on the model named Christopher James twice. Christopher is a very pleasant person. Irina decorated his eyebrows with black feathers that were later covered with bright color paintings. They had good teamwork, contributing to excellent results on this collection.

He always makes himself clear before starting his work. The models are a real couple - Thanabut Gier and Patcharida Worraphongdee. The former got a skull drawn on his face, while the latter got freckles instead. Their hairstyles showcase two voluminous tresses, which are a bit sloppy. The results still made Irina happy.

Nepal, the land in the embrace of Himalayas, an immense ancient kingdom, once a prosperous civilization that reached its peak in the Kathmandu Valley.

The charm of Kathmandu is that it is the center of art and culture of Nepal. By geography, Kathmandu is situated in a huge valley surrounded by the range of mountains and is nurtured by two large rivers, the Bagmati and Vishnumati Rivers.

Progress was at its highest in the late 14th century in the times of the Gopala Dynasty. The valley of Kathmandu was divided into four sub-kingdoms ruled over by the three sons and one daughter of the capable and brave King Malla. The four kingdoms were Bhaktapur, Banepa, Patan, and Kathmandu.

There was no war of the four kingdoms, but they competed to create artwork and to decorate their cities to be more beautiful than other cities!

The New District of Kathmandu contains buildings, houses, shops, and government offices. The busiest business district in the area is Thamel Road. The district is similar to Thailand’s Khao San Road. It is known as the Mecca of backpackers who travel in Nepal. It has many hotels, restaurants, internet cafes, tour companies and souvenir shops.

From Thamel Road, one can find a vehicle to go to the Patan Ancient City which is 5km southeast of Katmandu. Patan is dubbed Lalitpur or “The City of Beauty, “ .

It is recognized as the center of art, architecture and has fine examples of carved wood, carved stones amongst other treasures. The center of Patan City is situated in Patan

Dubar Square, which has castles, palaces, Hindu shrines, pools, sculptures, and museums to visit.

Newah Bhaye art is used for construction. It is truly a fine example of city planning, having an ancient road running north to south and east to west to divide the city into four equal parts. The Patan Palace and Dubar Square is the center; likewise, the Baktapur Ancient City had the Dubar Square as the center and alleys as the maze surrounding. If you have an opportunity to experience the city, we recommend you explore the ways of potters. You should also observe the Sathus, the holy men who dress like Yogis sitting for religious practices in these two ancient cities.

On the banks of the Bagmati River, there is a Hindu temple named Pashupatinath Temple Tourists may lack the courage to go since it is used for cremating the remains of deceased Hindus by burning them on an ancient open-air bier! After letting the fire burn the bodies to ash, the undertaker shovels the deceased’s ashes into the Bagmati River. This tradition stretches back to the 3rd century! As the Nepalese people believe that life and death are natural occurrence this type of cremation is not so scary.

Before waving goodbye to Nepal, one should find time to pay homage to one of the most important landmarks of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Business with Hand-Rearing Tigers Could you please introduce yourself and tell us what you do now?

Sure! My name is Kochakorn Chaiyabutr.

I gained MBA from the Southeastern University in Washington DC. Then I came back to Thailand and decided to run a zoo in North Eastern Thailand.

Currently, I’m a Managing Director of Tiger Kingdom.

What inspired you to start your business at the Tiger Kingdom?

Actually the Tiger Kingdom is my second business following the zoo in Ubon Ratchathani, but that one has several different types of animals kept in cages only. One day we got a baby tiger and took care of it like petting a dog or cat. It turned out that this baby was so easy to look after. More interestingly, it became familiar with human beings. So, we recognized that tigers are actually friendly to human. To some extent they are the same as dogs and cats, but the tigers are much more powerful and stronger. After bringing up that baby tiger, we got a pair of Bengal tigers.

These are the ancestors of hundreds of the tigers in the Tiger Kingdom. Then there were a lot of people appreciating unique orange, black and white stripe pattern of tigers and looking excited to see them more closely. At that time we were thinking it might be very interesting if the outsiders could be close to the tigers outside the cage. So, that’s why we started repopulating tigers in our other Kingdoms.

So, the main purpose of running the Tiger Kingdoms is to make them home to the tiger populations?

That’s one of the main reasons as we didn’t have enough space for all the tigers we had had. But the second reason is this is the way to feed and take care of our tigers. It’s undeniable that a lot of zoos around the world have hit hard times due to financial problems. Like them, our first zoo operated in Ubon Ratchathani doesn’t bring enough profits because most of visitors are local.

The income we have gained from there is thus insufficient to take care of all the animals, including the tigers. At the same time, we foresaw our potential and invested the business early on, as we knew that tigers could bring a lot of attention to locals and particularly foreigners. Now we have the second Tiger Kingdom open in 2008 in Mae Rim, Chiang Mai and the third one in Phuket, which was open in 2013. Anyway the number of our tigers has steadily increased. We are planning to open a few more Tiger Kingdoms in the other parts of Thailand too.

How do the Tiger Kingdoms benefit local community?

Our Tiger Kingdoms provide knowledge and a variety of information about tigers for young people and all those who are interested in what we have done for the tigers. People need to come here and see the tigers by themselves. Those who have never been here may have thought we keep drugged-up tigers living in captivity, but actually this is absolutely a misunderstanding. Here we don’t torture the tigers. They learn to mimic the domesticated affection for humans, leaving them irreversibly heart-warming. We would like people to be close to the tigers and have direct experience in that tigers are friendly to human beings.

Do you think you have already gained success in this business?

Yes, I think. This business has become successful mainly because Chiang Mai is a very popular destination for tourism. Many of our international visitors are from Western countries in North America, Europe, and Australia.

Do you think what makes your business unique or different from others?

We have done a hard job; we can take care of tigers and all their cubs. According to Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act, there are a lot of restrictions on keeping tigers for business purposes.

But we have proved that we are compliant with the law and that we can look after the tigers well

while the others can’t do so. Also, we take care of the tigers as same as our family members.

The Tiger Kingdoms are like one big family. We and the tigers trust each other, and the rearers are those having been with our tigers since they were young. So, all the tigers are familiar with the rearers as if they are in the same family. This sort of thing is not what you can teach anybody.

It specifically requires a lot of experience and personal observation among the rearers, as each tiger has different preferences or behaviors making them different from other types of animals.

Though our Kingdoms are a bit smaller than the other zoos, we use and take care of every square meter for the wellbeing of our tigers.

Have there been any challenges or difficulties since you started this business? And how could you deal with them?

Yes, mostly about financial issues. As the number of tigers has increased, we had to build the other homes for them. Indeed, this is also for attracting those who visit different parts of Thailand. So, we focused mainly on touristic hubs, including Chiang Mai and Phuket. Meanwhile, we established a not-for-profit foundation located on 480,000 sqm land in Mae Taeng, Chiang Mai. This is where older tigers that are no longer active can live peacefully.

It can also be a place where people can visit and pay a donation instead of an entrance fee.

An Example of How Personal Interests Contributes to Career Success.

At age 28, Ploy Nutsha Chairungsri is of the Gen Y who gained a master’s degree in Marketing (Distinction) and was determined to run a business by herself after coming back to her homeland. As being an enthusiastic business woman, Ploy is presently a Managing Director of Intec Commerce Ltd. Today she is willing to tell us about her business in an E-commerce platform named MadinThai.

What made you decide to start your own business, Ploy?

I have been keen on fashion and design since I was young. I like to have some style and fashion sense in life. When I studied in the UK, I still liked dressing up but at the same time I saw some possibilities to do an E-commerce business for selling stuff because several people like online shopping for clothes, accessories, grocery, furniture, and many others. Not only is it much more convenient for busy people than going to choose the products in an actual store, but it allows people to compare several products with one-click access. Customer service after purchase is not that different from what they can get from the store. At that time, this kind of business was not widely common in Thailand. So, I thought it was a good opportunity to start it up as soon as possible.

But why did you want to do a fashion business?

This idea happened to me when I was doing a final dissertation, which focused on UK’s biggest E-Commerce website named ASOS. This case study inspired me to set up my own E-commerce fashion business for exporting Thai fashion products to abroad. Hence, I created a website called MadinThai to be a channel bringing many Thai fashion producers together. Fortunately, I 76 l 24LIFE M a g a z i n e

got some entrepreneurial knowledge from a short-term course at a university in Bangkok before I went to study abroad. So, I sort of understood the sheer amount of experimentation and hard work that may be needed to start up a business.

Right after I graduated, it took me about 3 months to bring back this knowledge and understanding before starting a company.

Now you also have your own brand of fashion products?

Yes, after the website was completed, I started creating my own fashion brand called Madboutiquebkk. Like the website, this fashion brand is intended to be in the E-commerce platform due to a very stable connection of the Internet in Thailand. However, we emphasize on international markets because the increasing levels of entrepreneurship in the Thai private sector are presently contributing to the growing imbalance between supply and demand. We think it’s better to push Thai fashion brands forward to abroad, as Thai brands have increasingly been recognized by foreigners over the past several years.

What does this brand look like?

Does it have unique characters?

Madboutiquebkk is targeted to women aged between 20-35 and those who like to dress up differently for different occasions. Anyway we offer three outstanding collections – Poison, Passion, and Pleasant. For instance, the Poison collection is made mainly from synthetic snake leather. I’d say our brand is the first one that use synthetic snake leather and animal pattern design on women’s clothes. That’s why each of your products looks chic, unique, and timeless. At the same time, women can feel mythically sexy and confident in it. We also produce bags and shoes to meet every lifestyle and preference of women.

So, Madboutiquebkk products help them mix and match their wardrobe.

The Relationship between Nature and Culture in Chiang Mai

A

s economic opportunities are a major reason people move into cities, there has been a population shift from rural to urban areas. It causes high urban population density while the use of material resources has also been increasing steadily.

Urbanization involves dramatic changes of the landscape, increasing the proportion of impervious surface while decreasing that of green areas.

With a number of buildings and cars, high-density cities are facing rampant pollution and bad urban ventilation causing massive health problems. For example, Chiang Mai presently encounters a smoky haze triggered by forest fires and other open burning activities. In addition 78 l 24LIFE M a g a z i n e

to its rapid economic growth leaving skies and waterways heavily polluted, Chiang Mai has recently become one of Thailand’s most pollutant cities. In fact, a tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and releases oxygen. One large tree can supply a day’s supply of oxygen for four people. Trees also provide value in the road context. Without trees, streets feel much hotter and the air dustier than the ones lined with trees.

Trees reduce ozone levels by lowering local air temperatures and by transpiring water and providing shade. Trees can shade hard several types of surface areas, including driveways, building, and sidewalks.

As a result, trees can minimize

landscape heat load. Tree shade is a potentially valuable means of protection from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Leaves also protect your home from blazing sun. There’s no good reason why we shouldn’t plant more trees, as the large-scale planting of trees along the edges of a city can help to reduce air pollution that forms ozone, or smog.

The total population of Chiang Mai is around 500,000. It is expected that this city needs at least 50,000 trees to absorb volatile organic compounds. The BIG TREE IN TOWN project was initiated by Mr.Orarick Sriwong, President of The All So and Member of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. He has experienced in

working with several organizations based in Chiang Mai. He would like to support and create environmental responsibility among Chiang Mai residents. Thus, this project is aimed to encourage people to plant trees around their houses, buildings, and workplaces.

Moreover, the project also promotes sustainable protection and preservation of nature in Chiang Mai. At the beginning the project has distributed 50,000 trees to people living around Chiang Mai as well as provided guideline on how to take care of those trees. Additionally, the project breaks its task down into an interlocking subproject contributing to the projects of Big Trees Register, Tree Development, and Community Tree Care.

It’s undeniable that architecture has much of a connection to art. Both are interconnected with each other.

Will it be arbitrary to say art creates a therapy of the imagination and simultaneously contributes to creation as well? Art created in different periods can reflect changes in cultural, social and architectural ideas. It also shows the visions of the artists. And when art is simply shown in architecture, it feels more imaginable on one hand. When it is integrated into architectural design, this also contributes to a new iconic work, on the other hand.

In any of the arts and architecture, you never stop learning, even in downtown Chiang Mai. Dubbed “Chiang Mai’s most artful hotel”, Art Mai ? Gallery Hotel is the city’s most dynamic and interesting hotel.

It is a brand-new hotel operated

by Kor Gallery Company. It will be open by the end of 2015 on Nimmanhaemin Soi 3, but it has gained a lot of attention on social media. Art Mai ? Gallery Hotel proves that it is not only a place where people stay, but also something they can enjoy.

Mr. Plub Boonsuan, Gallery Director, intends to add art and architecture into every structure of the hotel, with assistance of two dedicated Thai architects, Assistant Professor Dr. Sant Suwatcharapinun from 2929DesignLab and Mr. Tanapong Hansiriwatanakij from NSignStudio.

You will be impressed with the presentation and artful exterior and interior design of the hotel.

The hotel features art as one of its attractions -- lobbies, restaurants, and in particular guest rooms have become a main showcases. Dr. Kan Nathiwutthikun, interior designer from Brownstone interprets various art periods into different themes of interior decoration on each floor. Moreover, there are what we called “Artists’ Room” where the interior space itself has becomea canvas of imagination for local and international artists, such as Nude Art designed by Sakwut Wisesmanee on the 2nd floor, Op Art designed by Jitsing Somboon on the 3rd floor, Chalit Nakpawn and his famous Pop Art appeared on the 4th floor, on the 5th Floor a famous designer and signer Thanachai Ujjin and his Abstract Art, on the 6th floor Surreal Art designed by an international designer Pomme Chan, last but not least, Art of Impressionism by Charoon Boonsuan shown on the 7th floor. As a result, each room has its own personality. In general, the hotel looks like it’s created from 100 percent pure fun and creative concentrate, at the same time it doesn’t miss basic facilities, such as offers a swimming pool and a poolside restaurant located on 8th floor where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Doi Suthep.

Gallery Hotel酒店，这家酒店是一家新 建的酒店，有79间客房，将要在今年 年尾开业，是由K Gallery公司负责打 造的，这家酒店的主题概念是希望能将 酒店和展示艺术品的艺术廊能够融合起 来，两体合一，并且让艺术能够体现、 渗透在酒店建筑本身的内内外外，使得 酒店处处都是艺术。而提出这个想法的 正是艺术廊的艺术总监Mr.Plub Boonsuan；而2929 DesignLab 的副教授 Sant Suwatcharapinun博士和NSignStudio的Tanapong Hansiriwatanakij 先生作为这个项目的建筑师。这两位建 筑师的想法是运用画架(Art Easel) 的形 状 把ArtMai? Gallery Hotel酒店打造成 一座外形和画架相似的独特宁静的艺术 廊，让人们在远处就能欣赏到独特的酒

店外形。使得能够与DigitalZoo 平面设 计公司设计的Hotel’s Brand Identity 相 互辉映，而Hotel’s Brand Identity的设 计灵感也是来源于画架。 走进酒店的大堂，就会发现艺术廊、餐 厅及客房都是经过精心设计的，为的是 能让来入住的客人也有机会利用空余时 间创造出艺术来。此外，各个时期的历 史艺术也变成了酒店室内设计的主题， 做为酒店的室内设计师---Brownstone 公司的Kan Nathiwutthikun博士，采 用了不同时期的艺术风格设计了各个楼 层。不仅仅如此，为了加深艺术与建筑 间的相互联系渗透，也为了让各个时期 的艺术能更好的融入各个楼层，酒店方 面还请来了国内顶级的艺术家们在艺术 间(Artist’s Room)内进行设计，如下： 请来了Sakwut Wisesmanee先生对二 楼进行Nude Art风格的设计；Jitsing Somboon先生以酷酷的黑白两色对三 楼进行了Op Art风格的设计；Chalit Nakpawn先生对四楼进行Pop Art风格 的设计；Thanachai Ujjin先生对五楼 进行Abstract Art风格的设计；至于六 楼则由Pomme Chan先生操刀进行超 越现实的Surreal Art风格设计；最后是 Charoon Boonsuan老师，这位大艺术 家则将Impressionism风格的设计融入 到七楼中。而七楼的设计则为客人走入 八楼的餐厅及游泳池用餐休闲及欣赏素 贴山景做了很好的铺垫。
