“In a world of uncertainty, one of our main goals is to help our valued growers find any edge that we can. We understand that our success depends on the success of our Farmers & Ranchers. In keeping with this goal, we’ve increased our commitment and investment in local test plots to help us all learn together. The practices that we continue to experiment with, are in our local geography, using readily available equipment, and in sugar beets, corn, and edible beans. They are not typically tests being conducted by most land grant universities, but are meaningful in bringing productivity gains and/or cost reductions to our local growers. As a bonus, executing on the test plots gives our employees and our customers the opportunity to operate and adjust equipment in true field conditions. As a few examples, we have tested the following…

•Spacing & Singulation of Sugar Beets planted from 4 – 10 MPH •Sugar Beet Yield impact with 50,000 seeds/acre vs. 54,000 •15” versus 30” Pinto Beans •Liquid Versus Dry Fertilizer •Coulter versus Shank Strip Till and impacts on emergence •Acres per hour difference in dry vs. liquid strip till

Soil Warrior is a unique and innovative product due to the manner it applies fertilizer, as well as the superior seed bed it leaves. In addition to the margin gain, we covered (on average) 11 more acres per hour with the Soil Warrior.

The reasons; 1) We could operate at higher speeds, and 2) We could strip till an entire pivot without having to fill. We averaged 26 acres per hour with the Soil Warrior and 15 acres per hour with the liquid machine. If your tractor depreciates at $90/hour, and you’re covering 2,000 acres, that’s an additional savings of $5,040 in tractor depreciation.

Another compelling test was with irrigated edible beans. We tested higher populations on narrow (15”) rows, and corresponding higher dry fertilizer rates on the narrow rows. As it turned out, it was $84/acre more profitable to use a low strip till fertilizer rate than using a high strip till fertilizer rate (both dry applications with roughly 50 lb/acre difference) when comparing only fertilizer and seed costs with the corresponding yield outcome.

Likewise, that same field showed that it was $153/acre more profitable to use a low seeding rate than using a high seeding rate (roughly 28,000 seeds/acre difference) when comparing only fertilizer and seed costs with the corresponding yield outcome.
