Fall Harvest is upon us. Despite lots of hail around, it sure looks like we have an above average crop looking at us overall . The only problem is, so does the rest of the United States!! As the old saying goes, “Manage what you can control”...and prices sure are not something we can control. When trying to manage the things we can control, that drive our cost of production, there are six trends affecting production agriculture that we should not ignore: 1. There is growing demand for food, feed, fiber and fuel 2. The future will bring ever-increasing global market volatility 3. Farms will get larger and become more specialized 4. The need for environmental compliance and sustainability will increase 5. The shortage of skilled labor will get worse 6. 21st Century Equipment to Donate $52,500 to Regional County Fair Livestock Programs Scottsbluff, NE — 4-H members are the future of farming and ranching. As such, 21st Century Equipment is proud to support 4-H County Fair Livestock Programs across the 43 counties in our operating area.

Individual donations were presented to county extension offices in July and August to be used at the discretion of the council and advisors in livestock facilities, livestock programs, or wherever they see a need. September 1996 – 21st Century Equipment, Inc. is organized to purchase the John Deere dealership in Alliance, Nebraska. Plains Implement had been owned and operated by the McAndrews family since 1949.

January 1998 – 21st Century Equipment in Alliance merges with Morrill Alliance, NE Location County Implement in Bridgeport, Nebraska, which then assumes the name of 21st Century Equipment, Inc. Morrill Co. Implement had been owned and operated by the Lapaseotes and Faessler families since 1978.

August 2000 – Keith County Implement in Ogallala, Nebraska, is purchased and the name changed to 21st Century Equipment, Inc. Keith Co. Implement had been owned and operated by LD & Sherri Walker since 1986.

March 2001 – 21st Century Equipment, Inc. purchases the B&B Sales facility in Sidney, NE. At the time of the acquisition, B&B Sales was a Ford/New Holland equipment dealership. 21st Century Equipment converted the existing facility and began a John Deere dealership in the location. The Sidney area had been without a John Deere dealership for more than two years.

June 2006 – 21st Century Equipment, Inc. purchases Modern Farm Equipment Corporation. Modern Farm Equipment had been owned by Gary & Carla Cranston since 1979. In 1999, the employees also became part owners. The managers and owners jointly agreed to sell their John Deere dealership to 21st Century Equipment in the spring of 2006, with contracts being finalized in June.

January 2007 – The Bridgeport Equipment facility (former International Harvester Dealership) in Bridgeport, NE is purchased. After extensive remodeling, the Company opens up a Reconditioning Center and a Company Training Center in this downtown Bridgeport facility.

Bridgeport, NE Location June 2007 – The Honda ATV, Motorcycle and Power Equipment franchise is purchased from Jack Anciaux in Sidney, NE. This new business is named 21st Century PowerSports and is integrated into the existing implement business in Sidney.

January 2008 – 21st Century Equipment, Inc is reorganized as a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and the new name of the Company is 21st Century Equipment, LLC. March 2008 – The stock and assets of Midwest Farm Equipment, Inc., located in Imperial, NE are purchased by 21st Century Equipment, LLC. Midwest Farm Equipment was owned by Jerry Wood and Rodney Johnson at the time of the acquisition.

Imperial, NE Location The business included a Reinke center pivot dealership and is also an authorized Cummins distributor.

May 2008 – A new “John Deere Place” opens on Hwy 385, in Sidney, NE. The main facility is 34,000 square feet and an adjacent storage building adds another 5,000 square feet of storage. The facility is Sidney, NE Store located on 12 acres adjacent to Highway 385, near the I-80 interchange.

June 2010 – 21st Century Equipment, LLC purchases the assets of Irrigation Specialties, a Valley Center Pivot Dealership located in Gering, Nebraska. The name is changed to 21st Century Water Technologies, LLC. November 2010 – 21st Century Water Technologies becomes the first agricultural dealership in North America to be appointed an official John Deere Water Dealer extending their offerings to include subsurface drip irrigation and soil moisture management tools.

April 2011 – On April 28, 2011 the existing 6 locations of 21st Century Equipment, LLC, merge with the 5 locations of KayJan, Inc. KayJan was established by H. A. “Skip” Cheyenne Wells, CO Location and Edna Beiber in January 1952 when they purchased the assets of G&M Implement, the John Deere Jeff Beiber & dealership in Cheyenne Wells, CO. Owen Palm Fort Morgan, CO Location Skip & Edna Beiber The company was purchased by their son Jeff in January 1974. The company grew to six locations by the time it merged with 21st Century Equipment.

October 2013 – 21st Century Equipment acquired MV Equipment, a John Deere dealership with five locations in eastern Colorado: Sterling, Burlington, Yuma, Wray and Holyoke.

February 2014 – 21st Century Water Wray, CO Location Technologies enters into an exclusive dealership agreement with Eco-Drip Irrigation to design, install and service subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems on parts of a four-state area. The new relationship with Eco-Drip is intended to accelerate the introduction of largescale SDI technology across the entire region by leveraging the existing 21st Century Equipment agricultural sales infrastructure. The agreement impacts 21st Century Equipment customers in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado, as well as parts of eastern Wyoming and western South Dakota.

January 2015 – 21st Century Equipment assumes ownership of the John Deere dealerships in Scottsbluff, Nebr. and Torrington, Wyo., formerly known as Frank Implement.

Tech Talk E Q U I P M E N T

Combine Optimization – Every Kernel Counts

As you get ready to head to the field this fall, we know you have a lot of things weighing on your mind, and we want to help put your mind at ease. It looks like there’s going to be a big crop out there, so as your partner in this business, we want to make sure you get every kernel in the bin, as efficiently as possible, and without unplanned downtime. There are a large number of items we want to make sure are optimized or at manufacturer recommended settings to start.

1. Pull the combine out of the shed, pull out the owner’s manual, and look at the service intervals. The recommended service intervals are set by engineers, with thousands of hours of testing, so your entire cost of operation is minimized, but so is the chance of failure.

2. Review the settings on the display. Are they set for the crop you are about to go into? Do you have notes from last year? If you have a “slide rule”, that will give you the manufacturer’s recommended starting point. Your specific conditions will dictate where you adjust from here. In the world of apps and gadgets, the “GoHarvest” app will help you effectively dial in the settings of your combine to meet the specific conditions you are facing.

3. There are also many basic visible items that you need to optimize. a. Check tire air pressures. Improper air pressure can have an effect on tire wear, and we want your tires to last as long as possible. b. Re-familiarize yourself with proper fluid levels. Today’s technology has evolved the required fluid levels, so make sure you look at the recommended levels in the Operator’s Manual. c. Your combine has been sitting for several months. Have you added fuel protectant? d. Check all adjustments on belts, chains, sprockets, etc. so you don’t have an unexpected failure in the field. e. Look at hoses, clamps, and belts for thinning, checked, or worn spots that are doomed for failure. These inexpensive parts can cause huge related failures. f. Hookup heads that you plan to use and perform the proper header calibrations ahead of time. Make sure you refer to your header OM to see proper fluid levels, grease points, adjustments, etc. g. Close all trap doors (clean grain elevator and stone trap door under the feederhouse) as it’s a good practice to leave them open in the off season.

Water and debris buildup during the off season will cause rust, which can lead to unnecessary failure. h. Clean and inspect your moisture sensor and calibrate it. i. Check the impact plate and mass flow sensor in the upper clean grain elevator. (60 series through S series). j. Assure all cab operations are working properly (A/C, lighting, etc.). Harvest can be challenging enough; we want all ergonomics and technology to work perfectly.

Farm Longevity Increased Through Efficiency

The farming industry has become painfully aware of input costs and commodity prices in the last year. With falling commodity prices and relatively stable input costs, you as the grower have had to stretch every dollar and really pay attention to your ROI. With this year’s input costs already in the books it is time to turn to your yield maps as one measure to see how you did.

It has been said that you cannot manage what you don’t measure. Quality yield maps are key to a solid foundation for both this year and the years to come.

You can rely on your ISG consultant to give you guidance on how to acquire accurate data and show you tools to analyze and manage your data in order to execute solid improvements. Maximizing the use of the John Deere Operations Center, Wireless Data Transfer, and Harvest Mobile gives you the ability to view your yield maps quickly and begin to make next year’s decisions before harvest is over. Sharing your yield maps with your local ISG consultant or 3rd party advisor through the John Deere Operations Center will allow us to help you with analyzing and interpreting the maps. Faster analysis leads to faster decisions and allows you to be ready for next year’s commitments - which are being asked for earlier and earlier in the year.

As we examine field variability from last year, it is time to look forward to next year. Last year’s variability can be explained through a host of factors - weather, soil, fertility, emergence, pest and disease pressure, etc. Some of those factors can be managed and others are at the mercy of a higher power. One variability management tool 21st Century Equipment offers is electrical conductivity or EC. EC is the data we use to define soil characteristics and transitions. The data we can derive will aid you in creating variable rate prescription applications, determining probe placement, creating soil sampling zones, and becoming a better manager of your ground.

Another way to manage variability is through prescriptions. Prescriptions allow us to address the variability in each field because we are able to adjust seeding, fertilizer, and water rates for each soil type, elevation change, magnesium spot, etc. At 21st Century Equipment we have the expertise to help you move away from a field by field approach and move to a site specific approach so we can raise the overall productivity and efficiency of each acre of your farming operation.

New Joint Partners

John Deere has formed a joint partnership with Hagie Manufacturing of Clarion, IA. The line of Hagie sprayers will bring opportunities for customers to obtain a machine with high clearance for late season applications. The Hagie machine line consists of three STS (single tank systems) and one DTS (Dual tank system).

The STS model line ranges from 1000-1600 gallon capacity machines. The dry weight for these machines range from 24,86029,250 lbs. The STS system has a quick attach configuration that would allow an operator to change the system within 10 minutes, allowing to drop the boom and go to a side dressing unit. The horsepower range for the STS lineup ranges from 300365 horsepower. Boom widths range from 60-132’.

The DTS model is a low weight, 1000 gallon machine. The DTS10 can be configured with two boom size options from 8090’. The machine is equipped with a 225 horsepower engine.

Dry weight of the machine is 18,500 lbs. The DTS (dual tank system) is setup with two 500 gallon tanks, one on each side of the machine and the system is all plumbed together to feed the solution pump.

The Hagie lineup consists of different load options, front, rear, and side loading capabilities. Like John Deere, the Hagie has a deluxe and a premium cab option. Hagie took safety to a high level from having a wash bay mounted on the cab to having a foot entrance to the cab to keep contamination out of the operator station.

The Hagie line was first brought to the industry in 1946 from Ray Hagie as a detassling unit. Ray Hagie started a seed company after college in 1944. He realized the need to produce a machine that would improve his operation. From there, he developed the equipment into a sprayer, and the concepts based around the machine have always been led with the intention to improve his farming operation and the machine took off from there.

With the joint venture between John Deere and Hagie, producers will have the ability to purchase Hagie equipment with fully integrated John Deere technology from the factory starting in 2018. The STS16 model will have the 365 horsepower John Deere 9.0L engine in the machine in 2017. The rest of the models will have the Cummins engine at least for that production year.

Fall is upon us and there seems to be a lot on producers’ plates this year; even more so than normal. Our farming environment has changed very quickly and we all are experiencing the stress of these changes and how they affect our income and our balance sheets.

In my previous article, I challenged you to pencil down a few things.

Most importantly I asked you to pencil out your machinery costs on a per acre and per hour basis. I also asked that you separate out what is the cost of the iron and what is the cost to operate it. Now this is where we can really help. Bring in your scratch paper to your local 21st Century Sales Professional, and also bring in a list of loans that you have against equipment. Through many of our finance options, we have been very successful at not only saving producers $$, but also getting them in to the equipment that they need for their operation going forward. Here are a few examples of how: · Converting loans to less expensive leases · Trading equipment that has high operating costs for more efficient machinery · Using equitable trades as advanced lease payments · Minimum down programs with delayed advanced payments · Flexible payment terms to fit your cash flow cycle Purchasing, leasing, and upgrading equipment cannot be looked at solely as a use of cash. If you are able to bring down your machinery costs by leasing (and you can), you are able to make the necessary changes to keep your operation moving in to the future and focus on the return on your equipment versus the cost. How we do it? We look at every piece of equipment that you use and what it provides in return to your operation. If we know what your p/hour costs are and p/acre costs are, we can structure finance options to bring down those costs all while upgrading your equipment and efficiency. We have also been very successful at finding those items that don’t provide a return, and trading them in for equipment that fits your changing operation and provides a return on the investment. It really is that simple. Our business is matching your cash flow abilities with equipment that fits. With our large line of new and used inventory as well as our connections in the market, it is a guarantee that we will be able to find the piece that fits your operation and budget.

He plays guitar and keyboard, and has been in a variety of bands.

In his spare time, Brandon enjoys going back to work on the family farm, attending Husker football games, and relaxing at the lake.
