THREE GENERATIONS TALK ABOUT THEIR SCHOOL YEARS While we were having dinner yesterday with my family, I told them about an incident that happened in my school with a classmate of mine about her dresscode. -Teenagers!..My mum said. -Why mom? We are in 2015, how are we supposed to dress? You did the same, didn’t you? I asked, and grabbed the chance to ask my parent about their school years. -In our days and age my mom said everything was different. First of all we had to wear blue uniforms. The girls were wearing blue skirts with CRETAN DIET NOW AND THEN blue blouses and long socks. That was the winter school uniform, so nobody had to worry about what to wear in the morning. -Education was more difficult and we didn’t have anyone to help us, my dad said with a serious Is it your first time as a headmaster? In the midst of a financial crisis, a refugees tragedy and overall pessimism, the creation of a school newspaper is a creative haven. The students involved learn to have a critical eye and view on issues like the above but also to look on the bright side of life. There should be and there is a bright side to life. For the 8th year our newspaper has been published. We have put all our love, creativity, energy, enthusiasm and hard work into it. This year we are proud to state that our newspaper was chosen to participate in a seminar in Athens that the Athenian – Macedonian Mass Media Agency offered. I as a teacher – co-ordinator am once again proud of my ‘‘staff’’. Keep Walking School !!! Ms. Koulizou English teacher, Co-ordinator.

At the times of our parents and great grandparents the staple diet in Crete was completely different from the current one. The basics were the use of wheat which they themselves grew and ground into flour, vegetables and fruit. Eating wild greens was a frequent part of their diet. Meat was something completely infrequent in their daily diet. Meat was eaten only on a few Sundays and on special occasions such as Christmas or Easter. They raised their own animals, got together and slaughtered the animals which they ate on special celebrations. Certain dishes which were common then are not known to the younger Cretan generation. One such dish is Papoudia. Here is a recipe for Papoudia which in Crete in the past was used as staple food. Papoudia (ingredients) • Wheat • Lentils • Peas Recipe First boil the wheat, lentils ,wheat and peas. Then strain them. Sprinkle with olive oil and sea salt. Another simple but most waited for delicacy was a simple pie made with sugar and cinnamon. Something like traditional shortbreads of Easter. Those days there were no refrigerators or freezers or anything that could preserve the food for many days. Therefore when the people wanted to consume meat they killed the animal and ate it. In mountainous areas in Crete they used ice to preserve the foods few days longer. People especially shepherds placed their foods in caves where the temperature was lower. Another way of maintenance was salt that is they spiked meat with salt and dried it and thus salt helped in preserving the meat much longer. Olive Oil and spices along with salt helped preserve the food. Nowdays we have moved away from what the world calls ‘Cretan diet’. It’s considered the most balanced and the most healthy diet in the world. Unfortunately we have chosen to follow the ‘western diets’ when the western countries are trying to follow our tradition.

is made from wine. When the wine is ready add a lot of petimezi leave them in air-tight vases for 4-5 hours. Petimezi is made by boiling the must with sugar for 1-2 hours.

During the teenage years teens compare themselves with those around them , and consider where they fit in. It’s a difficult time for many teens and oſten a lonely one. Teen’s feelings of isolation depend on social acceptance and some and some have doubts and oſten wonder why they exist. Isolation can cause difficulties to teenagers. Teenagers are social by nature and young people tend to have many friends. A teen who is isolated is oſten treated as an outcast and that can affect teens negatively.

XINOCHONTROS SOUP ½ cup of olive oil 5 cups of water 1 cup xinochontros 1 tomato Pepper

Recipe Put water in a saucepan along with the olive oil and the tomato in cubes and leave them to simmer for 4-5 minutes. Next add xinochontros, with salt and stir well. Cover the saucepan and boil for 35-40 minutes. Serve the xinochontro soup hot with pepper.

Teen Isolation Even teenagers get the blues.

Why teens become isolated Teens may chose to isolate themselves as a result of bulling or rejection by their classmates. Fitting in is important to adulthood. Some of the common reasons for isolation: • It is oſten due to the way they look, dress or act. • Some teenagers may be isolated by their classmates because they excel at school or they are not good students. • Strange behavior drives teens away from each other. • Depression is also a cause of isolation because they lose interest in everyday activities.

MOYSTOPITA 1 glass of olive oil 3 glasses of flour 2 glasses of musto(grape juice) 1 spoonful of soda almonds or walnuts soda petimezi

Recipe Mix the oil with the soda dissolved in a little must, add the almonds or the walnuts, the petimezi and the flour, mix and make dough. Put it in a baking pan greased with oil and cook the moustopita in medium heated oven.

• Some teens spend too much time on internet and do not go out with their friends so they become antisocial. The Effects Of Teen Isolation Isolation affects teenagers in different ways. They become withdrawn and depressed and have no friends or somebody to depend on or talk to. They have a hard time making friends building their selfconfidence and fitting in. How To Help Isolated Teens It is important to help isolated teens because they are in a situation where they feel worthless and they need support and encouragement to solve their problems. They need friends so they can join a club or do extra curricular activities or do sport, they must limit their time spent on social networking sites and realize the importance of social contacts and the friends. Finally teenagers can improve their social skills so later in their lives they can effectively interact with all kinds of peoplein their every day life and their jobs. They will need their social skills they have mastered during their teens years. Fratzeska Lougiaki

Statistics show that 18 out of 20 children but also parents prefer to order rather than cook and eat at home. Students of B’ class were asked the following questions:

When the West turns to Cretan diet, Crete turns West

• Cretan diet is followed by most students in our school despite the fact there is a strong tendency for the younger people to prefer ‘western’ diet. However the consumption of vegetables is really low where as the consumption of red meat is high. At home the Cretan diet is still followed.

The differences between boys and girls

Girls at work!! painting the English classroom.

As far as nature is concerned, boys and girls have many biological differences. From a really young age, even since the age of two, children seem to realize to which sex they belong. As a result, they start immitating their parents, little boys imitate their fathers and the girls do exactly what their mothers do. For this reason, boys play with cars and guns, they are very fond of sports, especially football, whereas girls prefer to play with dolls and babies, since their maternal instinct has already started working. It seems that when they react this way, children are being praised by their relatives. However, the differences of the two sexes become more obvious in older ages. But is it genetics or immitation? During adolescence for example, little men and women seem to take their roles even more seriously. Making an effort to grow up really fast, girls try to dress and also behave like older women. They spend hours in front of a mirror, trying to achieve the right look, they use make-up and accessories immitating their mothers wanting to look their best. It is an effort to attract boys, who do not care about their appearance that much, at least most of them. Boys seem to be more immature, their main interest is still concerning sports, computer games and other activities having to do with nature, for example fishing. Only when they get older they desire to attract girls, usually by exercising more at the gym, trying to look more muscular and athletic. In addition, special abilities in both sexes, concerning learning, are noticed. In previous years, but still now, it is believed that the majority of boys are better at math and science, whereas girls are superior at linguistics, language and literature. These stereotypes seem to be altered as time goes by, however ,the question remains, are these preferences due to genetics or due to environmental influence? We asked two of our school’s Maths teachers , Mrs. Stavrianoudaki, and Mr. Loupis if there are differences in performance in Maths between boys and girls.

Mr. Loupis: “ Traditionally boys have preferred studies in Exact Sciences such as those offered in Polytechnics whereas girls outnumbered the boys in Theoretical Studies such as literature etc. This happened and is still continuing to exist but to a much less degree, due to the stereotypes which prevail as to what “suits” each sex based on social criteria and employment prospects and not learning abilites. The differences which exist in the way of thinking and dealing with the school reality between the sexes does not constitute a particular tendency or talent of someone in Exact Sciences. The directness in dealing with mathematical problems which the boys are at an advantage is equalized and oſten surpassed by the methodical approach and the tenacity of the girls and the scholastic results show exactly that. If we count-in that the programme of studies and the school manuals have been designed and written almost exclusively by “male brains” then most likely girls have completely overthrown this “myth”. Mrs. Stravrianoudaki “International research on the achievements in Exact Science validate the equality between the male and female brain. The statistical differences are minute and overthrow the belief that females are at a disadvantage in this specific issue. The anatomical functions between the male and female brain are not related to intellect. The traditional view that there is a natural inclination of the boys to Exact Sciences in contrast to the girls, is due to stereotypes, beliefs and prejudices which start at home and are enhanced by teachers and the social background.” These are the opinions of our math’s teachers Mr. Loupis and Mrs Stavrianoudaki, as they stated them aſter being questioned on the matter. So, taking into consideration all the above the most important thing for the two sexes, is to feel self-confidence and to accept their uniqueness. Behaving according to our gender is an important way of becoming socially-accepted, as well. Lougiaki Frantzeska

Teens and Body piercing Body piercing seems to be a trend of nowadays, however, it seems that its origins go back up to 5,000 years BC. Ancient mummies findings seem to have earrings on them, and it has been found out that in Ancient Egypt body piercing was a must for upper high society members. Nose piercing was originated 1,500 years ago, in Africa and middle Asia, where many different tribes believed that it was a sign of beauty. In later years, piercings seem to have been spread to other body parts as well, like eye brows, lips and belly buttons. Which might be the reasons that youngsters tend to like piercings that much? Adolescence is a really sensitive period in a person’s life, during which teenagers are experimenting with their identities and their personalities. It seems that body piercing is in fact nothing more, but a form of expressing themselves. They try to state something or to belong somewhere. In

some cases, adolescents try to immitate the majority of people their age, in order to be more popular and more attractive to the others. Another reason is that sometimes body piercing becomes a form of rebellion. For example, teenagers may want to rebel against their parents or teachers because they don’t want to do what the older tell them. This way, they decide by themselves and they take their first risk in their life. Even if body piercing is accepted by the teenagers’ society, we should keep in mind that it is not a common selfexpression, like hair coloring or changing style. Such form of rebellion always leaves permanent marks on the body that can have really negative effects in the future. For instance, a boy who has got a number of piercings on his body, can be really famous or popular at his school, however in the future it is possible, that he will have a difficulty in finding a job. As we all know the first impression is very important and someone looking like that may be appalling to many and cannot easily be trusted by employees. Taking all the above into consideration, we understand that body piercing is a risky decision and we have to be extra careful and mature when making it. Lougiaki Frantzeska

Have you ever wondered how life was many years ago and how it will be in the future? Today we are going to take a look on how lifestyle was 200 years ago. Well, it's time to take a look at the “vintage” world ,shall we? OK let's go! Around 200 years in the past, lifestyle was completely different. Let's take a look in which way they used transportation. The word driving wasn't even in the dictionary. However they had the most effective way of transportation. Walking. People went to work on foot, children went to school on foot and so on. Teenagers are so obsessed with smartphones and tablets that some may even believe that people always had them. They didn’t even know the word “phone” those days! Children played outside with their friends instead of sitting in front of a screen all day.

Have you ever thought about the real meaning of life?

2015! For the past 200 years technology has developed at unbelievable rates. Smartphones, PCs, video game consoles, tablets, etc. have made their appearance. All these new “innocent” games have become the “sovereigns” of the world. But we… have been totally fooled! We let them dominate us! Well, enough of technology. Let's get to the real social lifestyle of teenagers and adults. Technology has made our life a lot easier and more interesting with hundreds of new inventions that were unknown in the past. But lets see the basics. Means of transport, cars, buses, trains, airplanes, ships etc. help us move around quickly and safely thanks to brand new technology and alongside we help the environment by choosing an eco or a hybrid vehicle. “Water polo”

We asked the girls of B’ class and here are their answers Twins: Double Trouble The bond between sisters and is strong between twins is even stronger. In our school there are 7 twins. Let's take a look at how life is as a twin student. So first things first, based on their opinions being a twin is a blessing and a curse (but mostly a blessing). It's different from having another sibling, because you have someone to talk to and tell your secrets. Contrary to an older sibling that sometimes will ignore you or won't care enough to listen to you, while a younger sibling simply won't understand. But not always are they bad. There's always a special bond between twins and even if they don't feel it it's always there. It's like sometimes you can just feel when something happens to your twin or even read each other's thought. Nevertheless not always are things that great they argue over everything

In our school there is only one student who trains for water polo .This child is George Bitsakis . He has been training for eight years every day for 3 hours. The idea to start this sport was his parents and he gladly agreed to go at it .He has taken part in 18 championships which happen every January, June and March. In these championships he has won eight medals. He is an athlete of NOX which is the local team of Chania with a long winning history in water sports and especially water polo. George doesn’t have an idol. He plans to continue this sport . But he plans to study something completely different at University. Training, he claims, has never interfered with school or studying for school. He has never gone to school without having studied. The fee for participating in the polo team, and for training is 480€ per year . Polo is a sport which is done throughout the whole year. There is a team for adults over the age of 25, and one for young men. There’s also a great female water polo team..Many athletes both male and female people have been picked for the Greek National team. They train 3 or 4 times a week. In this team there are 13. Ripped jeans fashion has been a favourite to teenagers for a long time. But this year it’s all the craze! All the ‘‘it’’ boys and girls wear them even to school. different friends from each other but that doesn't stop them from hanging out together but that depends on the mood. In my opinion it would be awesome to be with your friends and your twin.

So if you have siblings their advice is that if you fight don't stay mad at each other for long and always show them your love because time passes and no one knows what the future holds.

and anything. Well most of them have the same taste in lessons and sports but the others are completely different. Even though their parents always treat them both the same way, being careful not be unfair to none of them, we can't exactly say the same for the teachers, they may sometimes not be fair to one of them or even confuse them, if they're identical. Even if some of the twins don’t mind this for others it's really annoying, especially if they don't look alike. So we can safely say that is one of the main reason why some of them would prefer not to be a twin along with wanting to be unique. But I guess not all of them don't want to be twins. It can be pretty lonely without someone to talk to or share your thoughts. Of course they have friends to do that and having the same friends is easier than having

Beauty is something that everyone has either from the inside or the outside or ideally both. While internal beauty is the most important people tend to judge a book by its cover and that is something that is common among societies. As a solution to that, women even thousands of years before used makeup that was made from what was provided to them by mother nature. But now the tables have turned and now

we are able to produce and manufacture our own make-up. Girls and women these days use make-up a lot, to either become more beautiful than they already are or cover up the blemisses on their face or both. Believe it when I say it can do wonders when applied rightly. For example with the eyeliner you can create a winged eye making your eyes seem bigger and more prominent with lipstick you can make an illusion of fuller lips while with a blush you can also make your cheekbones more prominent. However it can be time consuming , but for some girls it’s worthwhile. But remember that you have to first love yourself before you expect the others to love you.

NO –BODY’S PERFECT Nowadays, appearance seems to be one of the most important issues in people’s lives, especially as far as teenagers are concerned. Since a very young age, they try to be good-looking and attractive to the others. As a result, they put so much effort so as to be slim and well-built. They are obsessed with their weight and for this reason manydon’t eat enough and they constantly criticize other people who are not oſten the same type. It’s really hard to deal with this situation particularly if you are an adolescent who is overweight. Being overweight, makes you unpopular in your school and all teenagers, especially the girls sometimes face some sort of racism. That means, they are bullied at times, they are called “names’’ and in some countries, they even get beaten. As a result, the girls undergo extreme diets, starve themselves and anorexia nervosa, is a common consequence. In addition, some more vulnerable youngsters, may even commit suicide. Isn’t it a tragedy? In an utopian world, everybody would have a perfect body and the looks of a model, if they wished so. However, we don’t live in such a world and certain measures must be taken in order to deal with this image obsession. For instance, some educational seminars should take place at schools so that students can be informed that a healthy body is not necessarily a very thin one. Overweight teenagers should be encouraged by both their families and schools, to exercise more and consume healthier food. But most importantly, all of us should try to love and accept ourselves the way we are. According to our questionnaire, I feel happy to report that in our school there is no evidence of bullying, since most of the children have stated that they have never had such an experience. Visiting the Vocational Highschool of Kastelli

Katerina Mazanaki

In the form of an excussion along with the cinema club of our school we visited the Vocational school of Kastelli in order to see a collection of old cinema cameras some of which dated back to the 1800's and to see the evolution of the cinema. Mr.Vlissidis who is responsible for the film room kindly showed us all the pioneer cameras and other film gadjects. This made us realise that the need for people to create moving pictures from still ones, has been intriguing man since antiquity. We also watched old films and the students really enjoyed them. Our staff visited the school along with the cinema club of our school.

Our School’s cinema club Interview of Ms. Papanagiotou, teacher in charge of the school’s cinema club

• Why are there film projections at school? A film is the result of many people's cooperation. Besides the director's point of view and the script, there are other sides which the viewer can become familiar with like music,

acting, photography, etc. Cinema is the seventh art and like all arts there are many ways to approach it. With the projection of films we are not aiming of course to cover all the aspects but I believe that's very important to become acquainted with the cinema and its history because this way someone learns to love, understand ''its art ''and mainly to aquire a good cinema criterion. Most important though is the existence of the cinema team because with our participation in it we get to know each other better, we learn to cooperate and interact. We get together to see a film ''all together'', to have a good time , to comment to argue .

• Do teens watch films any more? Teen agers and the young in general watch films but they dont have real contact with the cinema because times, have changed. The development of technology, has caused the cinema to lose many of the function it held in the past. A teenager can easily download a film from the internet and can watch on his own. In the past to go to the cinema was an outing for entertainment with friends, mainly on the weekends. At the cinema you watched the films along with many people. This social dimension, which also helped in acquiring through critique, comments and arguing a criterion for ''good films'' has been lost, so today one easily downloads a film but the issue remains which film he downloads to watch, especially when american, commercial cinema has prevailed with lesser quality films. • Which film did you like and which did the kids like? Among the ones we have watched so far. I personally liked “Viva Cuba”, because it touches important issues in a very simple and spontanous manner since the protagonists are kids. The students show a preferance in thrillers and crime Films. As it is expected not everyone likes the same films. I believe that sex gender and age play an important role in how children choose a film. I think though that most like “Collateral” and “Cine - Paradise”. Aggeliki Kerdela MAY 2016
