t the close of summer thoughts turn to the longer nights and colder months ahead and how we will be spending our time. It’s a great time to start a new volunteering activity and we have hundreds of roles to offer, at Volunteer Centre One Community, and those on these pages are just a few of them. One Community Visiting Scheme Loneliness is an easily preventable killer. We need volunteer visitors to visit socially isolated people across the boroughs of Eastleigh and Fareham. You only need to visit in your locality and you only need to commit to eight visits a time, so as a volunteering opportunity it fits easily around other commitments. Full training and support is given and mileage of 45p per mile is paid. This role is subject to a DBS check.

One Community is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. It promotes voluntary action and provides Voluntary Sector Support through community development work and its Volunteer Centre. It provides Care, Information and Transport Services, including support to adult and young carers, Day Centres, Care and Respite, Lifeline, Mops & Shops, information on benefits and services, Research into community activity, a Visiting Scheme, Community Transport, Dial-A-Ride and Shopmobility. Mystery Shopper—Hampshire Library and Information Service

The Home Library Service provides library material to people who are unable to make a personal visit to the local library and have no-one to do it for them. Home Library Service volunteers select and deliver material to suit the reading preferences of the customer and then also return items to the library. Reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed but must be agreed in advance with library staff.

All volunteers have an induction session which includes basic manual handling techniques.

Once appointed, an identification card will be issued to the volunteer, which must be worn by the volunteer in the library and when visiting customers.

Commitment: at least one visit per month to at least 2 or up to 5 customers, with the date and time of visits to be agreed between volunteer and customers.

Volunteer mystery shoppers are needed to ensure that Hampshire Library and Information Service provides a consistently high standard of customer service. Tasks and duties include visiting a group of Hampshire libraries posing as an ordinary customer and engaging with the staff based on a supplied scenario and questionnaire. You will need to provide a written evaluation of your experience.

You will have a confident attitude and good memory; good verbal and written communication skills; a full driving license and access to your own car. Attention to detail will be required to carry out the visit and complete the evaluation form.

No experience is necessary. A full induction will be given. Commitment: two days every three months. Duration: a year in the first instance.

Storytime/Rhymetime Volunteer Almost all Hampshire's libraries regularly hold free rhyme times aimed at the youngest library members. Many libraries also host story times for slightly older children to develop their listening skills and love of reading. The volunteer’s role:  prepare the area where the session takes place and also help to choose the rhymes or stories  welcome the families of small children and babies and oversee buggy parking  by joining in, encourage parents and carers

Home Library Service

Collection Box Coordinators Hope for Tomorrow

Hope for Tomorrow is a national charity dedicated to bringing cancer treatment closer to home.

Mobile Chemotherapy Units are provided to the NHS in a unique partnership so that they can take vital chemotherapy treatment closer to the homes

of cancer patients. The role of collection coordinator involves:  identifying and placing collection boxes in suitable locations  talking to the shop owner, receptionist etc at the location about how the boxes will help Hope for Tomorrow and about the charity  emptying boxes every 4-6 months (as they get full) and banking the income with the paying in slips provided. Giving a receipt and letter of thanks to the hosts  keeping a written record of the location of all boxes for your Regional Fundraiser, the dates they are emptied and the dates/amounts banked  moving boxes to a better location if they aren't collecting much. Your Regional Fundraiser may also ask you to remove boxes  reporting any stolen boxes to Hope for Tomorrow Head Office, Tetbury  spotting the potential for further fundraising amongst the box holders for the Regional Fundraiser All volunteers must be 18 or over. Induction to Hope for Tomorrow will be provided.

Dog Trainer Assistants Volunteers are needed to assist dog owners who have Mental Health Conditions with the practical aspects of training their Guides for the Mind Dogs.

Helping them gain and utilise the skills to train their dogs in an array of behaviours in a range of environments, so their dogs can provide emotional support and help mitigate the disabling symptoms of their conditions.

Volunteers will also help support, encourage and motivate owners as they undertake the Guides for the Mind Dog Training Programme, helping them to grow in confidence, skills and independence, so they are able to partake in everyday activities and achieve their goals in life.

Tasks and Responsibilities include:  Training dog owners and dogs together  Demonstrating to dog owners techniques to teach their dogs to undertake an array of obedience tasks, such as sit, down, stop, stay, under, walk calmly on a lead in pace with the handler, touch, target, food refusal and more in a range of environments







 



  

Guiding, mentoring, and encouraging owners as they perform training steps demonstrated by you to teach their dogs the necessary behaviours/skills and work their way through the Guides for the Mind Dog Training Programme Accompanying dog owners and their dogs to parks, shops, places that serve food etc, as they socialise and teach their dogs to feel comfortable and behave appropriately in such environment Observing dogs' body language to check they are enjoying training, comfortable with their environment and recognising signs of stress and adjusting the environment and or training to relieve it Observing dogs' physical conditions to check that they are being properly cared for Listening to and observing dog owners' behaviour and body language to help ensure that they are comfortable and not becoming overwhelmed or stressed in any way, and if they are stopping training and helping them cope Seeking permission from proprietors to allow Guides for the Mind Dogs in Training on their premises Providing support for client-dog partnerships Completing work and progress forms for clients and their dogs Completing feedback forms about the project

Treasurer - Age Concern Eastleigh Age Concern Eastleigh is looking to replace their retiring Treasurer, who has been in the role for eight years.

The treasurer will join an office team of three other members who all ensure the smooth running of the charity. The time commitment required is 5-6 hours a week, the day and timing can be whatever suits the volunteer. The role involves book keeping and sitting on the management committee (One meeting a quarter). The Auditors advise the Trustees. The volunteer would need to be competent with IT, specifically Excel. The incoming Treasurer will shadow the retiring Treasurer to ensure a smooth transition.

Community Safety Administrator Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is proactive in community engagement and providing home safety advice. As a volunteer Community Safety Administrator you will assist with:  general admin duties  contacting the volunteer team to capture feedback as part of the evaluation process  creating and inputting data into spreadsheets  compiling a volunteer newsletter  collating information packs for training and marketing events You will work alongside the Volunteer Coordinator who will support you and ensure you have all the training and resources you need to carry out your volunteering role effectively. You will also receive a full induction into the Service to help you understand your role and be given regular feedback and support.

The Service is looking for reliable, responsible and trustworthy volunteers. The skills and qualities sought are:  Willingness to work as part of a team  Competence with Microsoft Office  Excellent interpersonal skills  Good written and verbal communication skills  Ability to be flexible with volunteering hours

Research Ambassador NIHR Clinical Research Facility University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust Southampton is a major centre for clinical research, improving health for all and giving patients access to the latest treatments and care.

The Trust is looking to create a team of volunteers to help them promote their research to the public and encourage more people to get involved with research and trials. A Research Ambassador is someone who promotes research from a public point of view. As a member of the public discussing research, you offer a unique perspective that patients identify with. The aim of this initiative is to help patients and NHS staff recognise the importance of research in health care, and to encourage people to get involved. This is a diverse role, you could help promote research through a range of activities, such as:  Being locally involved in supporting national initiatives such as the I Am Research campaign which showcases research  Working with the team to create better communication materials  Speaking with staff, patients and visitors about the importance of research  Supporting open days and other events Anyone who is passionate about research can be a Research Ambassador, acting as an advocate for the amazing research that occurs in the hospital. You may be a member of the public, a patient, carer or family member. There is no set time commitment for this role. You will work closely with, and be supported by, the Patient and Public Involvement Officer.
