elcome to our November selection of volunteering opportunities. These are only a very few of the enormous range of volunteering roles we have on offer at Volunteer Centre One Community. Eastleigh Museum Volunteers In the delightful setting of Eastleigh's community museum, One Community volunteers provide a warm welcome to visitors, including occasional school visits, and information about exhibits. Duties include serving light refreshments in the small cafe and selling items in the shop. The museum is a hub of community life, preserving Eastleigh's heritage and putting people in touch with local services, opportunities and events. Morning shifts are from 9.30am until 12.45pm. Afternoon shifts are 12.45 until 4pm. Volunteers are currently needed for Monday afternoon, Thursday afternoon and alternate Saturdays (the Saturday shift is 9.45am2pm).

Eastleigh Museum is located on the High Street, within easy walking distance of the bus and train stations.

Trustee for One Community One Community is looking for volunteers willing to be co-opted onto its Board of Trustees with a view to becoming full trustees at the next AGM. The charity is particularly interested in people who have a background in HR, marketing or the health professions.

Call One Community on 023 8090 2458 to express your interest. The Chief Executive will invite you for an informal chat to outline both the challenges and the rewards of working behind the scenes at One Community. The Board currently meets bi-monthly, plus there are some sub groups.

Eastleigh Good Neighbours The demand for Eastleigh Good Neighbours’ services is increasing and the band of volunteers who run the group need more volunteers to meet the needs of local people, mainly to provide transport to appointments or to the shops for those who are unable to access public transport.

The group needs more volunteer drivers, who use

their own cars to provide lifts at mutually agreed times (mileage rate paid), and more coordinators (the volunteers who liaise with clients and drivers to make appointments). The group has no office base, and volunteers work from home with all out of pocket expenses covered. The coordinators take responsibility for calls on a rota basis, accessing voicemails left on a remote answering machine.

The friendly group provides good support and regular get togethers.

AFFECT volunteers need to be nondiscriminatory, non-judgmental and able to show empathy. A Qualification in counselling or active listening skills, or demonstrable experience would be helpful but not essential.

AFFECT is also looking for counsellors, befrienders and trustees.

Stroke Association Voluntary Group Supporter Stroke Association groups play an important role in ensuring that stroke survivors don’t become socially isolated. They also help to build confidence and self-esteem. As Group Supporter, you will be part of a team assisting in the running of one or more of these groups. Tasks can include:  Assisting Stroke Association staff in arranging activities for the group.  Supporting people to take part in activities organised for the group.  Supporting Stroke Association staff to set up/ clear away venues for group meets.  Meeting and greeting group members and preparing and providing refreshments.

The Chandlers Ford Group meets fortnightly, Thursday, 2-4pm.

AFFECT Supporter AFFECT supports "hidden" members of our society who have been affected by criminal trauma in some way. These are mostly family members and friends of offenders, who often feel isolated and can lose their support networks through the action of someone else. AFFECT is a non-judgmental organisation that supports the families and friends of prisoners regardless of length of sentence or type of offence, from serious offending to those serving shorter sentences.

AFFECT will support them for as long as they need (by phone or in person if required) by providing information, advice, regular support groups, volunteer befrienders, supporters and counsellors who are trained, DBS checked, and are themselves supported either by structured peer to peer support or supervised in accordance with ethical and professional practice and standards.

MultiSports Club MultiSports Club is a friendly, enthusiastic club where young people, aged 16 and over, who have learning and/or physical disabilities, can try a range of exciting and varied activities.

Multisports provides a range of activities throughout the year, aiming to give people a chance to try something new, and to participate in an activity outside of school or college. Whilst the emphasis is on having fun, people will also gain social skills, improve fitness, co-ordination and sports skills.

Volunteers help the coaches and the club members. You don't need to have any particular sports ability (although it does help!) just enthusiasm and a willingness to help out and join in the sessions. Volunteers must be ages 14+.

Volunteers are currently needed: Friday evenings - football at Crestwood College, Eastleigh, 6-7pm.

Sunday mornings at Thornden School, Chandlers Ford, 2 groups: 10-11am and 11-12 noon.

Travel expenses can be paid. Volunteers over the age of 16 will need a recent DBS certificate, but this can be arranged at no cost to you.

Singing for Well-Being Support Volunteer MHA Eastleigh Live at Home exists to reduce loneliness amongst older members of the community by providing activities and groups, empowering them to remain an active member of their community for longer. This is a practical role and includes the following:  Welcoming and encouraging existing and new members into the Singing for Well-Being group  Setting up the room and tidying up after the session  Making and serving drinks and light refreshments  Participating in the Singing for Well-Being group with members  Supporting the main group leader in any task necessary in supporting the group members.

Mandatory training includes: Safeguarding, Data Protection and Fire Training - all provided.

Creative Workshop Volunteer Minstead Trust needs two volunteers to help at their workshop for adults with learning disabilities in central Eastleigh. The volunteers will give general help and support to the instructor with creative tasks, such as art, drumming, music, storytelling etc.

Mainly you will be chatting, encouraging and supporting those who attend the workshop, enabling them to get involved with the different activities. You'll also be making hot and cold drinks and generally having fun with everyone else!

Research Ambassador Southampton is a major centre for clinical research, improving health for all and giving patients access to the latest treatments and care.

The NIHR Clinical Research Facility, University Hospital, Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is looking to create a team of volunteers to help us them promote their research to the public and encourage more people to get involved with research and trials.

A Research Ambassador is someone who promotes research from a public point of view. As a member of the public discussing research, you offer a unique perspective that patients identify with. The aim of this initiative is to help patients and NHS staff recognise the importance of

research in health care, and to encourage people to get involved. This is a diverse role, you could help promote research through a range of activities, such as:  Being locally involved in supporting national initiatives such as the I Am Research campaign which showcases research  Working with the team to create better communication materials  Speaking with staff, patients and visitors about the importance of research  Supporting open days and other events

Friends of Fernhill Friends of Fernhill are looking for new friends to join their friendly group. Could you help to arrange a coffee morning, book entertainers or generally help with the smooth running of entertainments?

This is a very rewarding role that makes a huge difference to the residents of Fernhill Court. They are particularly looking for someone who is willing to act as chair.

Friends of Fernhill provide entertainment and outings for the residents of Fernhill Court Sheltered Housing Scheme. Are you good at organising? This role is not arduous, a few phone calls, and a little paperwork go a long way towards organising functions. You'll need to enjoy a bit of a chat, that's really the only requirement.

Eastleigh Community Responders A Community Responder is a member of the public, trained by South Central Ambulance Service, who volunteers to help their community by responding to medical emergencies within 5 minutes travelling time of their home, before the arrival of an emergency ambulance.

No previous medical experience or training is necessary although you will obviously need a caring attitude and be able to cope with potentially distressing situations.

Community Responders are trained in the use of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), Oxygen therapy and how to assist with a wide range of potentially life threatening conditions such as heart attack and asthma.

Once qualified, Community Responders continue training and are required to re-qualify every six months.

COULD YOU BECOME A GIRLGUIDING VOLUNTEER - HELPING TODAY’S YOUNG GIRLS REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL?

You don’t need to have been in Girlguiding before to think about joining as a leader.

Girlguiding Itchen Valley Division covers Hedge End and Botley, already enabling 460 girls in 18 units to experience the fun and adventure that guiding offers. They currently have five Rainbow units (age 5-7), seven Brownie units (age 7-10), five Guide units (age 10–14) and one Ranger unit (age 14-18), which is fantastic!

BUT all these units are full and have waiting lists, so more leaders are desperately needed to support the existing units and allow new ones to be opened.

Housing is expanding rapidly in this area, set to grow by 4000 homes in the next 10 years. All of the new girls this brings deserve access to Girlguiding and the life changing experiences and rewards that it offers.

They are looking for: Uniformed volunteers – you need to be 18 or over, undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and will be given training in first aid, safeguarding and leadership skills.

Non-Uniform volunteers – you need to be 18 or over and undergo a DBS check. You will be given assistance as needed and can support a unit in many different ways, such as unit helper, treasurer etc.

Right now, they desperately need to open a new Rainbow and Guide unit, followed by other units for all ages in the near future.

But they can’t do this without volunteers – could you help? Maybe you and a friend could take on a new challenge together?

Being a volunteer in Girlguiding offers so many opportunities and rewards, for you personally and for the girls. It is a safe, all-girl environment, where they take part in a very varied programme.

What they do in Guiding stays with them as they grow into adults.

They develop the skills and confidence needed to reach their potential - as students, colleagues, parents, friends and citizens becoming the young women they want to be.

Story time volunteer Netley or West End Library Netley Library is looking for volunteers, particularly to lead Storytime on a Friday morning. Storytime sessions are all about sharing stories and rhymes with younger children. Tasks and duties include: • Preparing the area where the session takes place and choosing the rhymes or stories • welcoming the families of small children and babies and overseeing buggy parking • encouraging parents and carers to join in • clearing up after the session.

A general volunteer is needed at Netley Library on a Friday.

West End Library is looking for volunteers, particularly to lead Storytime on a Thursday morning and/or Rhymetime on a Friday morning, and a general branch volunteer on a Friday afternoon.
