Your invitation to the debate We are pleased to invite people from local charities, faith, voluntary and community groups to a gettogether where we can discuss neighbourliness in the Borough of Eastleigh.

We want to look at what is working well in communities where people feel engaged and supported and what we can learn from that.

We also want to look at the gaps in engagement and support and what might be needed to remedy that.

This follows on from our successful research into Neighbourhood Watch groups and will feed into follow-up work next year.

It would also be helpful if those attending could bring along information about any service they provide in their community.

The debate will be held at the King’s School, Allington Lane Fair Oak SO50 7DB. Registration is from 10am and the event will close at 1pm.

Celebrating 25 Years of Service On Wednesday 31 August One Community held a surprise party to celebrate the 25 years of service achieved by Senior Operations Manager and Deputy Chief Executive Paul Rollison.

Paul said, “To see some of the old faces from way back was a real surprise and I feel touched and blessed that so many people turned up to share

my day.”

Deputy Chair of Trustees David Wrighton spoke about the contribution Paul has made over the years, his dependability and reputation as a “go to man” for many inside and outside of the organisation.

Paul was presented with a gift voucher and Saints glass from his colleagues and friends at One Community.

Don’t buy bottled water We are in a privileged position here in the UK that the water that comes from our taps is drinkable. Bottles of water are nothing more than filtered tap water most often, and it takes 9 bottles of water to make the 1 that you drink. The bottles also end up in the waste system and are too often not recycled. This change could have a huge impact on the planet, and save you money at the same time. Carry a reusable bottle with you wherever you go to avoid getting caught. Watch this video for more information.

The show tells key stories from royal reigns, including tales of resolution and revolution, dignity and despair.

Visitors can delve deeper into their local history at this Eastleigh Museum exhibition through a special focus on the Victorian era and the reign of Queen Victoria.

The exhibition includes opportunities for dressing up and brass rubbing.

Information Communication Support Cards

Preventing Terrorism and Radicalisation Within Our Communities What is Prevent?

Prevent is the name given to a national strategy which aims to stop people from becoming violent extremists or supporting terrorism or violent extremism.

All forms of extremism Prevent aims to deal with all forms of extremism including Far Right racist extremism, animal rights extremism and religious extremism.

Healthwatch Hampshire is piloting an “I need communication support” card with people from ethnic minority communities in Eastleigh. The personalised card is given to people who speak limited English and includes their name, NHS number and the language they require an interpreter for. The card can be shown to GP practice or hospital staff to prompt them to arrange an interpreter, and add this communication support need to the patient’s record.

The idea for the card came from ethnic minority communities themselves during research funded by Healthwatch Hampshire. The CCG and Eastleigh Borough Council then worked with local minority communities to design and test initial versions of the card. The first cards were given out at the Eastleigh Mela in July.

The CCG is working in partnership with several organisations to fund and deliver the project: Asian Welfare and Cultural Association Eastleigh; Eastleigh Gurkha Nepalese Association; Eastleigh Borough Council; Healthwatch Hampshire; SOS Polonia; Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The card will also be piloted with people who have sensory impairments in the Andover area later in the year.

Information Advice for employers and businesses on the use of e-cigarettes (vaping) Public Health England (PHE) has published framework advice for employers and businesses to help them create their own policies on the use of e-cigarettes (vaping). Vaping is not covered by the current smokefree legislation which prohibits smoking in enclosed public places and workplaces, on public transport and in vehicles used for work and therefore it is at employers’ discretion whether to ban vaping in the workplace, or to allow it, say, in designated areas.

There are now 2.8 million e-cigarette users in the UK, the vast majority of which are smokers or exsmokers, and therefore PHE recommends that employers and businesses should put an appropriate policy in place. PHE’s advice helps employers and businesses create vaping policies that will support smokers to quit and stay smokefree, while still managing any risks. The advice acknowledges that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, but it sets out five important principles to help guide the creation of a vaping policy based on its current knowledge of ecigarettes.

PHE states that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking tobacco, plus e-cigarettes are helping many smokers to quit. In addition, there is currently no evidence of harm from secondhand ecigarette vapour. There is also no evidence that ecigarettes act as a gateway to smoking for young people. So, PHE advises that policies should take account of this evidence and clearly distinguish vaping from smoking.

The five principles are: 1.

Making clear the distinction between vaping and smoking.

2.

Ensuring policies are informed by the evidence on health risks to bystanders.

3.

Identifying and managing risks of uptake by children and young people.

4.

Supporting smokers to stop smoking and stay smokefree.

5.

Supporting compliance with smokefree law and policies.

Piano offered free of charge

A local resident is looking for a home for a piano and wondered whether any groups or organisations night like it. It’s an old upright overstrung piano manufactured by Boyd in 1910. Despite its age it’s in good condition and plays well, though may need a tune up. Information Volunteering may boost mental wellbeing in older adults A new UK-based study, has found that volunteering is associated with increased mental wellbeing; but mainly in adults aged between 40 and 70. Researchers used data from the British Household Panel Survey, which is an ongoing survey designed to track social and public health trends.

Researchers found that, generally, people's health and mental wellbeing score got worse as they got older. However, when people got over the age of 40-45, while scores generally continued to get worse for those who never volunteered, they got better for those who did any volunteering.

The study was carried out by three researchers from the University of Southampton and University of Birmingham, and was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Office for the Third Sector, and the Barrow Cadbury Trust through the Third Sector Research Centre.

You must be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand. This applies to any device and provider you use.

Don’t forget, you still need a TV Licence to watch or record programmes on any channel as they are being shown on TV or live on an online TV service.

So, if you already have a TV Licence, you’re already covered.

Dementia Friends Information Session – Thursday 22 September, 9.30am-10.30am Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society led initiative which aims to increase dementia awareness and change the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about dementia. A Dementia Friend is someone who has attended a one hour information session and has committed to an action that will make the lives of people living with dementia a little bit better. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and every action counts – from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media. FUNDING Aviva Community Fund Want a chance to win up to £25,000 for your community project? Aviva Community Fund launches 13 September. The Aviva Community Fund offers you the chance to get funding to support an important cause in your community. Tell them what a difference their funding could make. Then get enough votes from friends, family and supporters in your community and you could reach the finals, where a judging panel will award the funds. There are four categories:  health, disability and wellbeing  supporting the younger generation  supporting the older generation  community support Ideally it should be possible to deliver your project completely with the funds you’re applying for.

Projects that don’t need additional funding will have a better chance than those relying on other funds being secured.

If you’re interested in this fund, then start preparing now. Make sure you get your project submissions in by 12 noon on 11 October.

Tesco Bags of Help – Grants Update Great news about Bags of Help: in order to give Tesco customers a say much more frequently on where their money goes, Tesco Bags of Help grant scheme will now be permanently open for applications from community groups!

There are also a number of other exciting changes to the scheme. Bags of Help will now see the money raised by the 5p bag charge in Tesco stores in England, Wales and Scotland opened up to a greater range of projects that support community participation in the development and use of open spaces.

result of the funding will include volunteer training, physical improvements of open spaces, equipment purchases, community events and sports and leisure activities.

Organisations will also have a film made, receive help with press and publicity and be given a set of promotional materials.

Lifetime Sunday 2 October, The Point, Leigh Road, Eastleigh To celebrate International Older People’s Day the Point is hosting a day of dance for those interested in dance performance by, for and with the older generation. A day for older people who want to dance, audiences intrigued by what age and experience can offer dance performance and industry professionals with an interest in dance practice for those in later life.

The day will involve lunch and cream tea with conversations debating the challenges and triumphs of dancing at an older age and be followed by FREE dance workshops at 2pm and 4.30pm. The event will culminate in a special performance featuring professional dance Company H2Dance, The Point’s resident older adults company Rétrospectif Dance Company alongside other visiting companies from across the South.
