YOUTH AWARDS 2016 Click here for a Nomination form for The Mayor of Eastleigh's Youth Award for volunteering 2016 supported by Eastleigh Lions and One Community. The Council is keen to acknowledge the voluntary work carried out by young people, aged 11-18, in the Borough. Young people can be nominated for either a gold or silver award.

A silver award is for at least 50 hours of volunteering in the previous 12 months (from date of nomination).

A gold award is for at least 100 hours of volunteering in the previous 12 months (from date of nomination).

Volunteering would include helping older people, being a carer for family or friends, fundraising for a good cause, taking a role in an organisation like the Scouts, helping in school etc.

Eligibility Criteria  You must have known the young person you nominate for more than 6 months.  You must not be related to the young person.  The young person must either live in the Borough of Eastleigh or undertake the activity they are being recognised for in the Borough of Eastleigh.  They must be under the age of 19 on 1 June 2016.  The young person must know they are being nominated and why.  Their parent/carer must be aware of the nomination.

Activities The award is to recognise the voluntary work of young people in the Borough. We are keen to recognise those young people who regularly volunteer and to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of all young volunteers. Activities can include formal or informal volunteering roles.

Notification Those nominated will be invited to a presentation as part of One Community’s volunteer award evening on 7 June during Volunteers’ Week.

One Community News How does the voluntary sector know it is doing a good job? Most of us continue to work with our clients week after week, adapting our services in response to need or requests for changes, and we know we are making a difference. However, the sector is often questioned on providing evidence of the outcomes of our work – this is not simple. By ensuring an older person can use a voluntary transport scheme (Dial-A-Ride or Good Neighbours) to go shopping each week, we argue, that service helps keep that person independent. But if they don’t go out, can I prove they will become frailer and need increased care? No. But when one of your service users says, “I couldn’t do without you,” you know why you do it and that you are doing a good job.

Green Tips

Here at One Community we are trying to become a littler greener. We have signed up to the Waste Not UK Campaign which is about reducing food waste.

There are a few things you can do to have a positive impact on the planet, and we share these with you every month. Please let us know of any you have to include.

Love the yellow stickers Every large store will have a discount section where they put produce that is about to go over its sell by date. Here you can get some great discounts on food that will be fine for a lot longer than advertised. This stops chain stores throwing away lots of produce which is perfectly fit for consumption.

Spitfires Benefit Concert Success The benefit concert held by the Spitfires, The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band, was a big success. The band provided a great night’s entertainment— we’ve had some very enthusiastic feedback—and the event raised £500 for One Community’s Carers Centre.

The concert was held at the Methodist Church in Chandlers Ford on Saturday 23 April, and the programme included music from the movies, traditional marches and pop classics.

A big thank you to Ian Cole and the Spitfires for putting on this event for One Community.

One Community News Welcome to Sue Heath-Caldwell Community Development Worker

News about One Community’s Carers Centre

We are very pleased to welcome Sue Heath-Caldwell to the Voluntary Sector Support Team at One Community. Sue has joined Carol Grant and Rachel Webb in the Community Development team, having recently left Action Hampshire as Interim Project Manager at Action Portsmouth.

Prior to this Sue delivered a two-year Lottery funded project for Winchester District CAB, following 15 years managing the Volunteer Centre at Winchester Area Community Action.

Sue is married to JJ and they have a 24-yearold son. Sue has been an active volunteer over the past 30 years and roles have previously included being a Parish Councillor, setting up and chairing a playground fundraising committee, and mentoring.

Currently she is a trustee at the Royal Green Jackets Museum in Winchester, an active member of her village community and serves on the committee of Kitchen Dancers WI. In addition, she supports Rotary International through JJ’s membership of Winchester Rotary Club.

In her spare time Sue can be found enjoying the outdoors; walking, cycling or growing fruit and veg on her allotment.

For the last few years the Carers Centre has been well funded, achieving an unprecedented second award of three years funding from Big Lottery. That funding will come to an end in July and despite the best efforts of the team in a difficult financial climate a future source of funding has not been secured.

Contingency plans have had to be made. The Board of Trustees met last week and reached a decision to provide interim funding from One Community's reserves for a reduced and very focused service, which will include some resource dedicated to researching future prospects should funding not be secured before August.

The emphasis of the new service will be on support to carers, primarily through our emotional support scheme, and signposting to appropriate help and information. The service will no longer include therapies and celebratory events.

It is with great sadness that we face the risk of the loss of jobs in the Carers Centre and the reduction in service to carers. With this contingency plan we hope to mitigate against the worst effects and do our best to sustain this invaluable service into the future.

Goodbye to Maureen Davis Volunteer Centre Assistant Those of you who have had dealings with the Volunteer Centre at One Community over the last six years will very likely have had contact with Volunteer Centre Assistant Maureen Davis.

Maureen has left us for a “sort of” retirement, though she’s not ruling out finding something closer to home—she will certainly be keeping up with her volunteering! We wish Maureen well and thank her for her hard work and commitment over the years.

Her successor will shortly be appointed.

Fundraising Skydive for Young Carers Two young staff members at One Community have signed up to do a Skydive to raise money for our Young Carers project.

Kylie Barton who works in the research department and volunteers with the young carers, and Young Carers Activity Worker Bippa Dosanjh will take the 10,000ft leap on 7 May in Salisbury with Go Skydive.

They aim to raise over £1,000 for Eastleigh Young Carers Project, which will go towards providing young people with much needed respite.

You can sponsor Bippa and Kylie online, or by popping into the office.

One Community News OPEN Celebration Event One Community has been involved in the steering group of the OPEN project— looking at raising awareness of Older People’s Essential Nutrition in Eastleigh. Our role has been to help the project engage with community groups for older people, so organisers know what to do if they become concerned that an older person is not eating properly.

On 10 May the project is holding a celebration event.

What’s on at Eastleigh Museum The paint is just drying on Eastleigh Museum’s new facelift. The building looks very smart in purple and cream—purple being the corporate colour of Hampshire Cultural Trust (as well as the favourite colour of our Chief Exec!).

Do come and admire the building, it’s fascinating collections and the stunning Foot and Mouth Painting Exhibition.

Admission is free and we have a great café and a shop selling local produce—including honey, fudge and apple juice.

Art Demo Days See the amazing Mouth and Foot painters in action in the museum's exhibition gallery, talk to them about their work and maybe even have a go yourself. Just drop in between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Saturdays 7, 14 and 21 May.

On Wednesday 27th April 2016, four generations of one family gathered for lunch at the Beefeater Hut, Bournemouth Road, Chandlers Ford, to celebrate two very special birthdays. Mrs Ellen Pearson, the oldest Resident living at Fernhill Court, Chandlers Ford, celebrated her 102nd birthday, with her son Nigel Pearson and her grandaughter Joanna Wood. The second birthday was that of great grandaughter Sebina Poyntz, who celebrated her 21st birthday on Tuesday 26 April 2016.

Job Vacancy: Employment Support Officer for Volunteers SCRATCH Charity is recruiting an Employment Support Officer for volunteers. This post will initially be for 2 years and will be located at 33 Mount Pleasant Industrial Estate, Southampton, SO14 0SP. The salary is ÂŁ18,000 for a 28 hour week (to be worked over 4 or 5 days). WARNING Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service is warning the public to be wary of cold callers at the door offering paintings and artwork. The cold callers are claiming they are deaf students. Reports have been received from the Fareham and Eastleigh areas, but the warning applies to all of Hampshire.

Consumers have statutory rights when buying at the door, including a 14 day right to cancel for goods over £42, the right to a refund, replacement or repair if the goods are faulty, falsely described or not fit for purpose. However, those rights can only be exercised if the seller is a trader, and if they give full and correct contact information. Trading Standards recommend residents do not buy goods at the door.

Eastleigh Job Centre Plus is offering work experience to local unemployed people which involves deconstructing a steam engine, restoring it and refitting it all back together again.

Canadian Pacific was originally built in Eastleigh in 1941 and, in a neat turn of events, this is where the locomotive’s restoration will begin.

Eastleigh Works has rented out part of the building where the 30 Merchant Navy Class engines were originally built so that the project team has space to strip down and rebuild her. Component parts will be brought back to life at the Mid-Hants Railway’s own extensive engineering facilities at its Ropley site, which are on view to visitors.

The project has a huge community focus for the railway and the town of Eastleigh as they pull together the story of the builders, drivers and passengers of the 1940’s and 50’s steam era. Local memories of that time are actively being sought by the project to bring the story to life. People will be able to closely follow the restoration process through the website and social media, with regular blogs and updates as it progresses.

People who are currently unemployed have the opportunity to get hands on experience of cleaning, repairing and assembling a vast engineering project and working in a team environment. It is also giving them an unusual talking point on their CVs when looking for work.

This has led to job opportunities and an increase in the numbers of volunteers for the Watercress Line, as most have continued to be involved in the project at the end of their work experience. Any person claiming an unemployment benefit is welcome to apply by speaking to their work coach.

BASIC FOOD HYGIENE – MONDAY 16 MAY 2016, 9.30AM – 12.30PM OR 1.00PM – 4.00PM This course is intended to keep all food handlers up to date with their legal requirement for food safety training and also new legislation that has recently been brought in. The course covers:  how to protect food and customers/clients from biological, physical and chemical contamination and how to comply with the new law on allergen control  the importance of using the correct cleaning materials and cleaning methods  legal requirements and practical information on personal hygiene, pest control, maintenance of premises and labelling of foodstuffs both purchased and supplied to the customer.

EMERGENCY FIRST AID – WEDNESDAY 8 JUNE 2016, 9.30AM – 4.30PM This one day training session will cover all aspects of Emergency First Aid at Work. At the end of the course attendees will have demonstrated competence in basic life support skills and increased their awareness in managing a first aid incident in the workplace. A certificate of competence will be issued and is valid for three years.

Cost: Members £60, Associate Members/Voluntary Sector £70, Others £85. Includes tea, coffee and biscuits. Please bring your own lunch.

DRAWING & TALKING AD VANCED COURSE – WEDNESDAY 29 JUNE 2016, 9.30AM – 3.00PM Many people who have completed the Drawing and Talking Foundation course have expressed a desire to ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 9

Training know more about the technique and Jungian theory that underpins it. The Advanced course is open to anyone who has completed the Foundation course. Training includes:  the structure of the psyche and ego-self axis  the basic archetypes as defined by Carl Jung  which children are likely to benefit from therapeutic intervention  what to do when a child will not draw – sandplay  assessment tools including strengths and difficulties questionnaire  using Drawing and Talking with a group – a directed approach  the play continuum.

Participants are required to bring copies of the drawings that children have completed if they have been given permission to keep copies by the child.

4Youth is delighted to be able to offer the following short courses at low or no cost for residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton who are interested in youth work or working with young people in informal settings.
