ZEBRA SQUARE GALLERY ART EXHBITION _ DUBAI 2017

Prominent Johannesburg Art Institution Zebra Square Gallery brings acclaimed artists from South Africa to the UAE, challenging conventional displays with their original concept of showcasing fine art in non conventional spaces as five star hotels, fine dinning restaurants or exclusive shopping malls. The collection includes modern sculptures and intricate ceramics from some of South Africa’s leading and iconic artistic pioneers.

The latest exhibition was a harmonious presentation of pieces from the renowned painter and sculptor Lionel Smit and the ceramic studio Ardmore Ceramic Art at the Gran Gallery of One & Only Royal Mirage _ Dubai, last November.

For 2018, Zebra Square Gallery is planning to spread their wings to other emirates, offering all art lovers an intriguing and vibrant opportunity to discover the creative and contemporary talents of South African artists.

CONCEPT: A harmonious presentation of pieces from the established South African renowned painter and sculptor LIONEL SMIT and ceramics from the international acclaimed studio ARDMORE CERAMIC ART. About ARDMORE CERAMIC ART: Colourful, detailed and thought provoking of both fauna and flora synonymous with South African culture upon every look, Ardmore Ceramic Art showcases pieces from a highly skilled and selective set of local artists from KwaZulu-Natal, whom individually emblazon a unique style of artistry that have been comparable to modern day collectibles that reside within the residences and designs of notable connoisseurs and luxury fashion houses including Queen Elizabeth II and Hermès.

Fée Halsted is the driving force behind the enterprise, an artist whose love of teaching and determination to fight poverty and AIDS have set artists with inventive spirit and fearless creativity on the path of creative self-discovery, empowerment and ultimately worldwide acclaim. The collaboration between Ardmore and Hermès in particular, showcases Fée’s own company’s exuberant designs that now appear on the international brand’s silk scarves and are a beautiful eye-catching reflection of the ceramic brand’s distinct personality.

About LIONEL SMIT: Lionel Smit is a young South African artist born in Pretoria, that creates monumental portraiture works on canvas, sculpture, silkscreen, video and public installations. Smit’s work has been exhibited locally and internationally in prestigious galleries, art fairs and public spaces including a solo exhibition at the Didrichsen Art Museum, Helsinki and various public sculptures featured in the USA including Union Square, New York City.

In his expressive paintings, prints, and sculptures, Lionel Smit focuses on the residents of Cape Town, South Africa, in portraits at once representational and abstract. The members, most often the women, of the ethnic Cape Malay community serve as especially frequent subjects.

He cites Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, and Lucian Freud as influences, for their use, in his words, of “the human portrait to create something extraordinary.”

Often working at monumental scale, Smit, in his own paintings, combines gestural brushstrokes, dripping and splattered paint, and lush patches of color with a naturalistic rendering of the heads and faces of his many subjects. His sculptures, too, evince this blend of naturalism and abstraction, with their heavily modelled, sometimes fragmentary, surfaces. For Smit, this form of portraiture gets beneath the skin to reveal the multifaceted nature of his human subjects.
