Welcome to our 15th annual bull sale…

The only thing constant is change. That is a very profound way to start my welcome but there is so much truth to the statement. As things in our world change, we are always trying to adapt to it. For years we have relied on cheap child labour. As it became apparent that this labour force was going to go out and experience the world, the decision was made in 2022 to move our calving period later. This decision was made with a lot of thought and consideration. After the first year of this transition, I can honestly say we are not going back to calving in January until that cheap child labour comes back as management.

This change in management has also resulted in a change in our bull sale offering. This year’s offering is predominantly two-year-old bulls. In fact, it is one of the largest offerings of one-iron two-year-old Charolais bulls in Saskatchewan. These bulls carry the same genetics and quality as in the past. They have been brought along to maturity slowly to ensure maximum usefulness and longevity. I am really excited about this group of bulls; they are as uniform of a group as we have ever offered.

Also in this year’s offering is a select group of 12 yearling bulls. These younger born bulls are an exciting group, heifer bulls that are an outcross to most heifer bulls in the Charolais breed to exciting sires from our new Connelly bull.

With this many two-year-olds to sell, we have made the decision that it is best for everyone (bulls and people) to have a video sale. No animals will be coming through the barn. All the animals will be beside the barn in pens that are easily accessible and easy to evaluate the bulls in.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our 15th Annual bull sale on behalf of the Nicholas family. It seems like just yesterday that we got together to plan our first sale. Approximately half of those sales now have been held at Beck Farms. Thanks to the Beck Family for being such great sale partners and gracious hosts as the work that goes into holding this annual event is pretty awesome.

As Wade mentioned in his welcome we will going to a video sale format this year in order to accomodate their offering of primarily two year olds more easily. Please ensure you have been able to evaluate the bulls in as much detail as you would like in advance of the start of the sale as this will be a change this year.

2023 was yet another year for the books. Mother Nature continues to be a challenge in many areas of the Prairies. We definitely got a bit drier in our part of the world than we have seen in a while. You will notice this when you get a look through our weaning weights compared with previous years. That being said 2023 was a year of record cattle prices across the country. CanFax reports that Alberta fed steers averaged $2.25 per lb over 2023 (or approximately $3263 per head on a 1450 lb steer). Bred cattle are selling at alltime highs with potential to go higher yet with some timely moisture between now and spring in some areas. There is definitely lots of reasons to be optimistic about the cattle business.

2023 was also a big year for us as our oldest daughter Emma was married to Tyson Scott in July. Wow was that a shaker. Not sure if we will make it through two more of those or not. Megan is currently finishing her last few months of her Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan making her a teacher by spring of this year. Best of luck to her as she looks for her first teaching position. 2023 also saw us becoming empty nesters as Kalla graduated Grade 12 and has started in Agriculture at the U of S. We are still adjusting to that change around here.

YEARLING BULLS

As we moved our calving later, we wanted to still be able to offer some yearling bulls in the sale. In early September I went into two breeding groups and pulled a handful of calves out of each group. When analyzing this group of yearling bulls, you will have to adjust your eyes as they are at least 3 months younger than a lot of yearling bulls selling this spring. As Jorja has stated, “If these were born in our normal time they would look unreal”. They spent the summer on native and tame pastures, no creep. They were weaned on September 8th and pail fed a bull ration along with free choice hay. As in the past, none of the yearling bulls will be semen tested before the sale. They will be testicular measurement and palpated by a licensed veterinarian. Semen testing will take place in either March or April as dictated by you the buyer. We keep lots of spare bulls. Spare bulls are available for your use in the case that something happens to the bull you purchase between sale day and turn out.

Beck Farms reserve the right to draw semen on any of the sale offering for in-herd use only. This will be at our expense and your convenience.

Mainframe is what all breeders should be searching for when on the hunt for their next big time heifer bull. Low birthweight, lots of growth, exceptional mother cow, that also has a calving ease pedigree. He is worth the look.

TWO YEAR OLD BULLS This year’s group of two year olds features a very strong group of bulls that were hand picked in the fall of 2022 to sell in this year’s sale. They were left on the cows until beginning of November 2022, gently wintered on a backgrounding ration. They were pastured from May 15 until October 15 this past summer. They have been fed this winter a TMR of silage, bull pellet, and hay. Our goal to raise 2 year old bulls with bred in performance but managed in such a way that they remain sound and active breeders for years to come. Buy these bulls with confidence they could work in any of the best herds in the land.

All Beck Farms bulls will have received two shots of Fusogard for foot rot before they are delivered.

McCoy Bull Development The McCoy bulls spent the summer of 2023 on a combination of tame

and native grass pasture. Creep feed was put out August 25 to aid in the weaning process. We didn’t receive any measurable rainfall after June 5 in our area. Weaning weights were down significantly at our place in 2023 as you will see as you look through the catalog. Bulls were vaccinated and 205 day weights were recorded on September 5. Bulls were weaned on Sept. 28 this past fall. Since weaning bulls have been developed on a high roughage ration of silage, hay, oats and protein supplement. 365 day weights were recorded on January 16.

As in past years the bulls will not be semen tested prior to the sale. All bulls will be measured and palpated by a licensed veterinarian before sale day. Semen testing will take place in late March or April as dictated by the buyer. We retain a large number of high quality spare bulls. Spare bulls are available to you should something happen to your bull between sale day and turn out.

All McCoy bulls will receive initial vaccination for foot rot prior to being delivered.

Milestone 7J was retained as our top son of /S Mandate 88838 to replace his sire in our breeding program. His dam is a short marked, high volume, goggled eyed Skyfall daughter that we are very fond of. His sons are long bodied, good haired, well pigmented, and appear to exhibit the extra testicle that 7J did from an early age. His sons are definitely at the top of our offering this year.

This is the first group of bulls that we have offered sired by Fortress 17J. We are very happy with what we see so far. His sons are a stoutmade, big middled, well-muscled, strong headed bunch. His progeny also seem to be consistently dark coloured and well pigmented if that is something you are looking for. Fortress was selected for herd bull duties at MCC for his complete phenotype as well as his blend of growth, maternal horsepower, and carcass merit.
