SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES AT HADDON Children enjoyed two free workshops by renowned textile artist Prue Simmons at the Haddon Learning Centre on January 20th. Prue is one of just a handful of people in Australia who practice “saori,” a traditional form of Japanese weaving and also “Bengala” dyeing. She uses “Bengala Earth Dyes” and other natural dyes to produce gorgeous textiles in a variety of designs and colours.

The children produced some amazing pieces of work in their four hours and they also enjoyed a light lunch. These programs are provided free by the Golden Plains Shire and the Haddon Community Learning Centre.

‘DISABILITY’ INFOGRAPHIC DEVELOPED TO PROMOTE INCLUSION A new infographic on ‘Disability’ has been developed as a resource to the community. The new image called ‘Disability – Being Inclusive in your community’ was developed as part of an initiative to provide helpful information to the community about disability.

Golden Plains Shire Council in partnership with its Access and Inclusion Committee developed the infographic for the purpose of breaking any myths and perceptions the community may have related to disability. The infographic is aimed at stimulating conversation and challenging members of our community to think about how they approach ‘disability’ within their club, event, committee, business or as an individual or volunteer. The infographic highlights that disability is relevant to any community, with approximately one in five people having a disability, and provides practical methods in developing conversation, planning and a greater understanding, education and awareness about disability.

Businesses and community groups are encouraged to display the infographic (presented on adjacent page) in their venues to influence a positive change to the lives of 4 million Australians who have a disability.

- BALLARAT COMMUNITY HEALTH'S EXERCISE CLASSES AT THE WELL, SMYTHESDALE

Living Longer, Living Stronger Class is held every Tuesday at 9.30am and Friday at 10am.

This is Ballarat Community Health exercise program for older adults aiming to build strength and endurance whilst enhancing your quality of life. The class exercises are group based in a circuit training format held in the multipurpose room at The Well, Smythesdale. Cost is $5.00 per session. For more information call BCH on 5338 4500.

Active Balance Program for seniors (over 65’s) Ballarat Community Health will deliver weekly exercise classes by a qualified Exercise Physiologist and Allied Health Assistant over 15 weeks commencing 10 February 2015. Benefits include improved balance, muscle strength, mobility, greater fitness and self-confidence. The cost is $5.00 per session. For more information call BCH on 53384500.

In 2015, Haddon Primary School will celebrate its 25 th anniversary in the new school building. All members of the community, past and present, are invited to form an events group which will focus on collecting, collating and displaying memorabilia from both the ‘old school’, as well as the current Haddon Primary School 25 year history. The group in consultation will decide on the date for the back to Haddon Primary School celebration and the format of the festivities.

They would also like to track down memorabilia from school life over the years – old photos, books, uniforms, sports trophies etc – to be used in the new building display’. If you have any items that might be of interest please let them know. They will scan photos while you wait . – Avenue of Honour Ballarat is graced by the longest “Avenue of Honour” in the southern hemisphere and famous for being the first of its kind in Australia. It is 22 kilometres in length with a total of 3,801 trees representing Ballarat and district men and women who served in WW - 528 of whom were killed in battle or died of wounds or disease.. It extends from Ballarat to 5km beyond Burrumbeet towards Learmonth. The Avenues of Honour, is made even grander by its “Arch of Victory.” It is administered by a committee, which has representatives from the Ballarat City Council, RSL, National Trust, Rotary Club, Lucas Past Employees Association, the Civil Contractors Federation, arborists and others.

The trees were planted by the Lucas Girls, employees of the clothing manufacturing firm E. Lucas and Co, who conducted eight plantings between 1917 and 1919, with 23 different species planted. The most successful trees along the avenue were the elms and poplars, which gradually replaced other species that did not thrive. There were four hundred girls employed at the Lucas factory. It is estimated that between 50-60 per cent of eligible males in Ballarat went to war.

Some of those servicemen and women recognised along smaller avenues in Ballarat are also honoured on the main Ballarat Avenue of Honour. Most of the cost for the plantings was met by the Lucas Girls through the sale of dolls made from scraps they had salvaged at the Lucas Clothing Factory .

Arch of Victory ~ was built in 1920 by master bricklayer George Brookes to be a gateway to the avenue. A one-eighth scale plan was produced by three University of Melbourne architecture graduates and was used by Mr Brookes as the model. The Prince of Wales was due to arrive in June 1920, so there was urgency to complete the project. Work started in February, with General William Birdwood laying the foundation stone. Sixteen workers completed it in three and half months. The prince, later King Edward VIII, cut the ribbon and was presented with silk pyjamas made by the Lucas Girls.

– ANZAC Biscuits It is possible to call Anzac biscuits as soldiers’ biscuits. These little biscuits played an important part Australia’s and New Zealand’s history. During World War I around 1915 soldiers’ mothers and wives sent these biscuits to the troops stationed far away overseas. At that time the problem was all foods they sent to their soldiers had to be carried on ships and shipping could take up to two three months. They needed something that would not spoil so this was the birth of Anzac biscuits. It was cheap and also easy to make, not perishable because there are no eggs and milk used in Anzac biscuits so it was easy to keep them fresh long time without refrigerator and these biscuits gave soldiers some added substance and nutrition at that time.

This traditional Soldier or Anzac biscuits are still highly popular and available always in supermarkets of Australia and New Zealand and especially even today traditionally Anzac biscuits are made during April as Anzac Day (25th of April) approach.

ANZAC BISCUIT RECIPE Ingredients: 1 cup plain flour

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon golden syrup

125 gms butter

1 teaspoon bi-carbonate soda

3/4 cup rolled oats

1/4 boiling water

Method: Preheat the oven to 160 degree and line baking trays with paper or re-useable silicon mats. Blend together flour, sugar and oats. Melt butter and golden syrup over a low heat. Dissolve the bi-carb soda in the boiling water.

Combine butter/syrup mixture with the dry ingredients and mix well. Use a large kitchen spoon to place mounds of mixture on to baking tray and flatten with palm of hand. Bake for approximate 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Allow to cool on tray for a few minutes before sliding the biscuits onto a wire cooling tray. Store in airtight container.

WORLD WAR 1 100th ANNIVERSARY Local Celebrations 2015 - Haddon and District This years organisers of the 2015 Anzac Services throughout Australia anticipate a great turn out for the 100th year anniversary. In preparation for this very special commemoration in our district, local Haddon identity, Chris Rigg has come up with a wonderful idea of attaching poppies to all the tree name plaques in the Avenue of Honour . Chris and the Haddon Lions Club have been busy rallying assistance to make this happen! And everything is coming together so well with school children being organised to attach the poppies to the name plaques and so many people offering to assist with donations of items and time. Its just wonderful!

And remember if you know of any details of any service men or women in the area to please contact Chris as he wants to talk to anyone about their proposed involvement , he can be contacted on: 5342-4800, or 0427-742-177. - Haddon Church of Christ Has as a New Pastor Haddon Church of Christ is very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Neil Davies to the position of Pastor. Dr Davies is a long time identity of Ballarat, being the CEO of the Kiro Kids chiropractic clinic in addition to having been active for many years in the pastoral care ministry at One2One Church of Christ. Dr Davies brings over 35 years of experience to the position.

The Haddon Church of Christ is a conservative, evangelical church that makes the bible the only rule of faith and Christian practice. The church has served the Haddon district continuously since the early 1990's and is very much a permanent part of the Haddon social landscape. Services throughout 2015 at the church will be held at 10am each Sunday.

Haddon Church of Christ is a warm, caring and loving place to be. We exist to represent and present the Lord Jesus Christ to the Haddon and surrounding communities. Vince and I have been kept busy as usual! Here are another two little orphaned magpies that were the victims of trees being felled-again...

We get a lot of magpies in at this time of year that people have found as chicks and tried to raise. Magpies, like all birds and animals, have a very specific diet, and by this time of year, the orphaned chicks that people have been trying to hand raise get very sick due to inadequate diet. That's when they try and get help for the bird. Unfortunately, with birds when you notice they are unwell, they are really unwell. Symptoms take a lot longer to show in birds. As always, if you find an orphaned chick, or any bird or animal that requires assistance, it is important to call for help IMMEDIATELY. The sooner a bird or animal comes into care, the better chances they have for survival. AND believe it or not, wild birds DO NOT require feeding!! It is always best to let nature take care of itself! Birds instantly know what they require for their diet and feeding them CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS. Just like too much processed and junk food is not good for humans.

It is a privilege that wild birds come to visit your garden but feeding them to make them tamer for our own enjoyment creates a vulnerable environment for them. If you love nature like Vince and I do, enjoy it but please DON'T FEED THE BIRDS!!!

School holidays continued from front page

- Shift into Gear with L2P program The Golden Plains Shire in partnership with Vicroads, the City of Greater Geelong and Ballarat United Way has embarked on its first L2P Driver Mentor Program.

The L2P program is an innovative mentoring program helping learner drivers get their P’s. The program offers young people between the ages of 16 and 21, who don’t have the support and resources (eg no access to a car or supervising driver) the opportunity to achieve 120 hours of driving experience required to obtain their probationary drivers license.

The purpose of the program is to connect young people with community mentors (supervising drivers) to facilitate safe driving practices and engagement with the community.

We have places available for three young people from the south and one from the north of the shire to engage in the program. - SAD PASSING OF FORMER HADDON AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY HOUSE CO-ORDINATOR ANNA CURRY Anna Curry, a former long standing co-ordinator of HDCH and recent former manager of the Darley Neighbourhood House and Learning Centre passed away peacefully on January 3rd following a long battle with illness. Anna courageously worked up until late November at the Darley Centre. Her memorial service was held in Bacchus Marsh on January 8th.

Anna was a well respected and one of the longest serving community house co-ordinators in the Central Highlands Community House Network and indeed the state. Anna’s dedication, wealth of knowledge and expertise will be irreplaceable.

The Darley Neighbourhood House and Learning Centre chairperson, Debra Doyle speaking at Anna’s memorial service paid tribute to her outstanding dedication and commitment to that centre and the Darley community for the past six years. Anna helped steer the re-establishment of the original “House" at Darley after it had experienced a period of closure. She also assisted the Committee of Management with the building of the new centre which was opened in 2010.

As a tribute to all of Anna's great work the DNHLC child care centre will be named in her honour.

Anna also steered the relocation and establishment of the Anna in fancy dress at a HDCH event Haddon and District Community House with the Northern Community Centre, playing a major partner in the design and furnishing of the then new centre opened in 2003.

Anna was honoured at a retirement party at the Darley centre in November with a large crowd in attendance.

Everyone at the now renamed “Haddon Community Learning Centre” wish to honour and acknowledge all of Anna’s fine work and dedication over many years at Haddon and extend their deepest sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues. She will be so sadly missed.

You can undertake all necessary training required in a one day session, or undertake separately sessions you need to update.

Available: CPR - 9 am to 11 am , Level 1 - 9 am to 1 pm, Level 2 - 9 am to 3 pm, Anaphylaxis - 3 pm to 5 pm, Asthma - 4.45 pm to 6.30 pm (approx.)

And a “Defibrillation “ course is also available.

Welcome to the Haddon Community Learning Centre Term 1 2015 Program Guide Happy New Year to everyone and a very warm welcome to our first term program guide. I hope you find something that will interest you and that you will come join us for some fun and learning! We have some new and returning classes and workshops and the advice is to book in early so as not to be disappointed.

Just a little about us for those who are new to the area. We are a community house (now community learning centre) originally started by the Haddon community and have been in operation since 1987.

We are an incorporated, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to community development, education, and training. We are governed by a volunteer “Committee of Management “ and are funded in part by the “Department of Human Services.” We are also a “Learn Local “organisation and apply for funding through the Victorian State Government and the ACFE board for some course delivery and we self-fund the rest of operations by conducting fundraising events.

We are one of more than 350 neighbourhood houses in the state and over 1000 nationally. We are supported by our state peak body, ‘The Association of Neighbourhood Houses and Learning Centres” and our national peak body, ‘Australian Neighbourhood Houses & Centres Association.’ Neighbourhood Houses and Centres provide a diverse and constantly evolving range of positive social, health, educational, and economic outcomes for individuals, families, and communities; particularly for those experiencing disadvantage. We are proud that our community’s learning centre is a warm and friendly place to be where everyone is welcome.

If you have your own device please bring it with you. If you want to try an iPad before you purchase one then you can use one of ours in class to see if they will suit your needs.

Digital Photography BASIC DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS & NEXT STEPS GROUP For newbies - what are all those buttons, dials and technical terms?

This is a beginners six week morning introduction class to digital photography that will cover tips on how to compose a good photograph, location shooting, adjusting the settings on your camera, how to download images and basic editing. It is delivered by a trainer with industry experience, and covers the skills and knowledge required to conduct civil construction excavator operations. It covers such topics as planning and preparing for excavator operations, operating an excavator (including how to conduct the pre-start, pre-operational and post-operational checks), lifting, carrying and placing materials, selecting, fitting and removing attachments, relocating the excavator, carrying out machine operator maintenance, and conducting housekeeping activities. This unit of competency is accepted by the Civil Construction and Mining industries throughout Australia.

Course Requirements: Participants must be 18 years or over to attend this course.

Participants must be competent in written and spoken English (Student are required to undertake a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy test prior to commencing the training) Participants will have to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) Participants are recommended to hold their Construction Induction OHS (White) Card if operating Earthmoving machinery Participants are required to wear sensible work clothes and steel capped boots, and dress according to the weather for their training.

DUAL CERTIFICATE II IN AGED CARE & HOME & COMMUNITY CARE You can work in the growing health and aged care field with this nationally recognised dual qualification.

CHC30212 Certificate III in Aged Care CHC30312 Certificate III Home and Community Care There is an ever-increasing demand for employees to enter the aged care sector. Certificate III in Aged Care / HACC will be run over a minimum of twenty six weeks consisting of two days per week training. A work placement towards the end of this period will be sourced and facilitated by Advanced Career Training. This course provides participants with a fantastic opportunity to gain two nationally accredited qualifications in one, as well as hands on work experience that will support them in gaining the career in the aged care and home & community care industry.

Special Workshops DESIGN AN ENTRY FOR THE SCARF FESTIVAL 2015 “Coastlines” ~

Scarf Festival to August 2nd

Ever wanted to enter the Geelong Scarf Festival exhibition and competition? Its easy, rewarding, creative and very exciting when you win! Join last years “Thematic Division” winner, Janette Wotherspoon and create an entry for this years competition. Learn how to interpret the design brief and theme into a unique, wearable and beautiful scarf. Brainstorm ideas, look at different materials and construction techniques. Target your design to a specific section of the competition and then enter. You can also put a price on the scarf and you might just sell it and make some money for your hard work too! Hosted by the National Wool Museum the Scarf Festival attracts well over 300 entries each year. Entries come from school children, beginner crafters, accomplished artisans from Australia and overseas. There are traditional and experimental scarves from crocheted, knitted, woven, appliquéd, felted, sewn, dyed, embellished and even origami. They are judged in categories including thematic, colour, use of sustainable practices, menswear, knitted, woven, crocheted, felted and 100% wool, as well as special categories for primary and secondary school entries.

The theme for this year is “Coastlines.” In our first session we will be looking at the theme, colour combos and ideas and working out how to interpret the theme and create a unique scarf entry.

The second session will look at putting the idea into reality and/or finalising your idea and working through any issues that you may have encountered with the construction of your scarf.

This year the Haddon Community Learning Centre and the Golden Plains shire have worked together on a range of sessions and courses aimed at the needs of volunteers in our community.

The Volunteer Training Program is open to all volunteers in the Golden Plains Shire. So whether you are a community volunteer, community group, sports club or committee of management, these training sessions are designed to further develop your skills and provide support in your role.

YOUR HOME AND INTERIOR DESIGN With Anna Phillips , Interior Designer SHORT WORKSHOP 1: BATHROOM / KITCHEN INSPIRATIONS In this workshop we will look at planning trends for bathrooms, kitchen/ living areas. This will not only give you some inspiration but it could save you space, time and money.

Whether you are looking to update your home in these areas, or in preparation for selling, then this workshop will assist you.

It is a common misconception that any improvements you make to a kitchen or bathroom will reflect in an increased resale value. In reality, poorly planned works often add little value to your home, with some even having a detrimental effect on a its value. DAY WORKSHOP 2: PRODUCTS: In this workshop you are going to experience an unadulterated and fun interior design experience! Are you trying to find something and cannot source it? This is a full day course whereby you will bring your creativeness, your samples, images of your preferred fittings and we look at putting together an inspirational cut and paste board and product explanations, or image gallery of products you want to be able to source locally, or just be inspired by. Get ready to do some investigating, cut, pasting and drawing!

COMPUTER LAB FACILITY FOR HIRE The computer lab has ten PC’s & audio visual facilities and is served with a spacious rest area with tea and coffee making facilities.

Art andand Craft Textiles Craft TIE DYEING AND SHIBORI Using the oldest traditional Japanese fabric dying technique, Shibori (that translates roughly as pole wrapping), create your own work of art. This is a type of tie dyeing in which certain areas on the cloth are reserved from dying by binding or stitching, allowing one to create intricate patterning in fabric surface. In this workshop you will create a unique hand dyed piece of fabric using natural dyes. Create an interesting decorative panel using hand sewing, wound blocking, tie dyeing and other shibori techniques. You will incorporate natural dyes and brushing dyes directly onto the fabric. The fabric can be used for quilts, garment panels, soft furnishing and maybe a scarf for the Geelong scarf festival competition! (see page 17).

WET FELTING FOR BEGINNERS Felt a wool scarf Come try wet felting and make a gorgeous scarf for yourself or to give as a gift. You do not need any prior experience to do this class.

INTRODUCTION TO SAORI WEAVING Saori is a Japanese hand weaving technique that emphasises creativity and free expression. There are no rules, no fear but just an immersion into weaving and working with yarn and threads. This ‘non-technique’ is meditative and aims to build self worth from producing an item. Adults can make a small scarf., placemat or wall hanging. You can bring along some of your own yarn if you like.

ZINGY ZENTANGLES BEGINNERS & ADVANCED CLASS All patterns are made up from five basic elements - they are easy to learn and it’s fascinating how they transform into amazing patterns. The best place to start is with an introductory class - they are fun and you will learn the basic stokes and philosophy that make up the art of ‘Zentangle.’

Your tutor will show you how easy it is to learn the method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns - they may look complicated but when broken down into their basic elementary strokes, the complicated becomes easy, "one stroke at a time." No artistic training is needed. It is relaxing and helps calm stress and anxiety and it increases focus and creativity.

Mosaics is the art of creating decorative designs constructed from small pieces of til, ceramic, coloured glass, stone or other suitable material. PAPERCRAFTS WITH KAZ On thee first Friday in the month ‘Craft Club’ is held, Come join these fantastic workshops & find your inner creative goddess! You will learn techniques to make cards and other paper craft items.

“Make It Happen” is the 2015 theme for the internationalwomensday.com ‘global hub,’ encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women. Each year International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. The first International Women's Day was held in 1911. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day.

International Women's Day Celebrations at the Haddon Community Learning Centre, this year will be held in March at the Northern Community Centre, Haddon.

LITTLE WOADY’S - SWING, SWAY, LAUGH, PLAY

Little Woady’s is a program for preschool aged children and their parent or carer to engage in positive experiences together that enhance the parent/child relationship.

TERM 1 PROGRAM Branch into Music Date: Friday 13, 20, 27, February, 6, 13, 20, 27 March When: Thursdays (7 sessions) Time: 9.15 am ~ 9.45 am Cost: 1 child $56.00, 2 - $105.00, 3 - $147.00 Children aged under 6 months are free when attending with a paying sibling.

A second session may run 10.00am to 10.30am if sufficient interest.

LIBRARY The Community Learning Centre has a library of pre loved books, videos and DVD’s available to borrow or swap. Take some, leave some, or relax and have a read, while enjoying a coffee in the lounge area.

We also have a collection of LARGE PRINT, and TALKING books, for those who are vision impaired or just prefer this type of book.

Donations of good quality books and magazines are always gratefully accepted.

Please note we are unable to accept educational texts or instruction manuals.

- Release of the DVD “Doin' It For The Troops” Please support our returned Veterans by purchasing a copy of this DVD. It is only $24.95 + postage.

Every single cent raised goes towards helping our returned Veterans who suffer from PTSD and their families nationally.

Many wonderful artists came on board for this project. The DVD was completely made from sponsorship money and donor money which is how we are able to give back 100% to our returned Veterans.

“Doin' It For The Troops” DVD. Narrated by award winning artist Amber Lawrence and with the following play list this is a DVD that everybody would like to own. One hour and 39 minutes of wonderful entertainment. The DVD begins with a live to camera speech from General Peter Cosgrove (Ret'd) - now Governor General of Australia. Some of the artist include Kylie Minogue & John Farnham, the late Doc Neeson, Beccy Cole, Gina Jeffreys, James Blundell, Jack Jones, Adam Harvey, Jimmy Barnes, Adam Brand, Noiseworks, Guy Sebastian, John Williamson, Shannon Noll and Rachel Thorne. There is Channel 7 News footage of when the troops returned to Townsville in 2008 and “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” - Performed by Eric Bogle. There are also live to camera short speeches by Prinnie Stevens, Rear Admiral Ken Doolan (Ret'd), Michael Chugg, Lehmo, The McClymonts and Angry Anderson.

~ Wanted ~ Volunteer Gardeners at the Northern Community Centre We are seeking interested people in the Haddon area to join a volunteer gardening group.

The shire will provide tools and support, you provide energy and enthusiasm.

The time commitment is up to you but we are planning for one morning a fortnight.

If you are required to do a minimum number of volunteer hours for Centrelink we can assist you.

RIDING FOR THE DISABLED VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY WANTED

Volunteers are needed to assist with the RDA riding program. Come help make a difference to those living with a disability. Without more volunteers there is the possibility that some will miss out on the chance to participate in such a beneficial and valued program.

Volunteer and coach co-ordinator at Riding for the Disabled Ballarat, Pat Fisken, hopes to influence more people to give volunteering a try. “It was really worrying last term, knowing how short we were,” Pat said. “We can’t operate without volunteers; a well-trained operator is worth their weight in gold.” For more information phone Pat Fisken on 0409 218 298.

CAPE CLEAR SLOWNET YACHT RACE The third Slownet Yacht Race is to be held on Sunday March 20th, 2015 from 1pm at the Cape Clear Recreation Reserve (behind the school). We are hoping to involve “sailors” from the broader community.

We race land yachts on our oval. Yachts are to be made to specifications found on our Facebook page and are crewed by two people. You can also make model yachts to race on water.

Also on the day we will be having picnic games for both children and adults. A jumping castle and council’s I-Van will also be available for entertainment.

A sausage sizzle, Devonshire tea, ice-creams and snacks will be available for purchase.
