Training and Employment Funds Help Members Advance their Careers Throughout Pandemic
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Training and Employment Funds (TEF) continued to offer a variety of programs and services to help 1199SEIU members and eligible non-members improve their education and skills, and advance their healthcare careers.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certificate Program
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and be fluent in English. After completing the program, they will be eligible to sit for the New York State certification exam. 1199SEIU members can receive grants and tuition assistance, while nonmembers may be eligible for special grant funding. Since January 2021, 103 participants have completed their CNA training and 82 have passed the New York State certification exam.
Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and be fluent in English. Participants can receive tuition assistance and must pass an entrance exam to be accepted into an accredited LPN program at a vocational school or college, which generally can be completed in 12 to 24 months of classroom and clinical training. Prospective students must attend the LPN Tuition Assistance Workshop before enrolling in a program, and they are encouraged to contact TEF staff for registration information. TEF staff are available to help students with tutoring in math, science and English. Since 2018, more than 175 members have completed the LPN Program.
Job Security Fund
Job Security Fund provides eligible full- and parttime members who have been laid off from their jobs with support, including job referrals, supplemental unemployment benefits pay, short-term training to enhance skills and extended healthcare benefits.
Employment Center
Employment Center offers job placement services, including resume reviews, applicant phone screening and vacancy referrals, by matching applicant qualifications to vacancy requirements.
