ell, the holidays are upon us— once again it seems as if the festive displays go up earlier each year. What’s the rush? We barely pack away our Halloween costumes and Goblin décor before rushing into Thanksgiving mode, planning the menu and guest list. Whew! I wish people would slow down during the holidays. This truly is, as it has always been, my most favorite time of the year. My family’s tradition is spending Christmas Eve at my brother John’s home. As all of us live in Southern California, everyone shows up for the family photo and fun times. Bless my brother for taking on this group year after year! Here in Orange County, there’s so much to do for the holidays. There’s the traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony at South Coast Plaza, along with visits and photos with Santa for the kids. One of my personal favorite events is at Fashion Island, where you can dress up your furry friend for a pet photo with St. Nick. (Don’t be surprised to find my pup and I on just one of these outings.) Among my absolute top choices for activities this time of year is heading to Roger’s Gardens, where every beautiful collection of treasures showcases the magic of Christmas from around the globe. My most favorite event of all, though, is the breathtaking Newport

Beach Christmas Boat Parade. Featuring more than 100 years of history, Newport Harbor comes alive with all the festive decorations adorning these marvelous vessels.

Although there is so much to do and so little time, let’s all take a deep breath and enjoy all that a beautiful Southern California holiday season has to offer. This includes the fashion pages in our Winter Wedding Issue. For “California Dreamin’,” we were pleased to shoot at the beautiful Resort at Pelican Hill along with all our amazing partners: Lugano Diamonds, Garys Fashion Island, Casablanca Bridal, Saks Fifth Avenue South Coast Plaza and The Passionate Collector. To them, we send a big Thank You for helping make this issue so fabulous. So, my friends, that just about wraps up this holiday issue. Enjoy the season, be safe and I’ll see you in the new year.

s wondrous winter has finally arrived, allow me to lead the charge with a wholehearted tis the season! Spending time with loved ones, decking the halls of my home, baking elaborate cakes and looking forward to the year ahead—all are hallmarks of the holidays. I will say that one of the best places to celebrate this glorious time of year is in Southern California, where—most gloriously, I might add—temperatures become chilly enough to bundle up in cozy cashmere, the golden sunsets take on a deeper hue and the beaches become quieter and more secluded. Dressing up the season with talented designer Melinda Serra at Gatehouse in Costa Mesa. Check out her easy do-it-yourself inspirations (p.100), sure to bring a little spice to your table décor this holiday!

ON THE COVER...

Combined, these elements not only make Southern California a holidayseason staple, but also one of the most sought-out wedding destinations. Thus, this issue’s photo shoot captures the beauty of a coastal California winter wedding—one with elegant, intricately detailed gowns created by Casablanca Bridal and accented by bespoke hats by Arturo Rios, all enhanced by the Italian-inspired elegance of The Resort at Pelican Hill. The shoot also captures the essence of the shifting season, with looks transitioning from casual womenswear from Saks Fifth Avenue to dapper menswear by Garys, Fashion Island, perfectly highlighting the change in weather.

Edit Note

Winter also brings with it an abundance of inspirational ideas for festive decorating. For this issue, I was able to enjoy time with Melinda Serra at Gatehouse in Costa Mesa creating the rustic, winter-inspired farmhouse table setting detailed in “Fine Dining.” I am also delighted to be featuring bask’s first-ever “Design Journal,” for which contributor Ana Maria Martinez-Stumpo takes her creative ideas from sketchbook to printed page with stunning results.

Finally, as winter is always a time to appreciate family and friends, I would like to take a moment to pay tribute to a beloved member of the bask family, and a dear friend of mine, Robert Palmer. A wonderful and truly inspiring person dedicated to promoting the arts and traveling the world, Robert was also special in that he supported bask from day one. By giving his many pieces that appeared in our pages a singular energy and effort, Robert put his own stamp on the magazine. For this—and so much more—I am very grateful. This striking image from our winter fashion shoot was captured by photographer Tony Florez at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach. Here, the model wears Diamond Flower Rose Cut Chandelier Earrings, a Cascade Diamond Necklace and a Fancy Yellow Oval Diamond Flower Ring by Lugano Diamonds; a Mermaid Silhouette Gown with a Strapless Sweetheart Neckline and Illusion Back, available at Casablanca Bridal; a headpiece made of purple silk with feathers by Arturo Rios; and holds a Pasotti Purple Dahlia Flower Umbrella, available at The Passionate Collector.

1 Jenn Thornton writer The Chedi Andermatt’s chic, modern aesthetic makes it a true design marvel; something Jenn Thornton takes special note of in her article, “Alpine Allure.” “What makes The Chedi Andermatt special is its stunning setting, and the man who masterminded its design, Jean-Michel Gathy,” Jenn says. “His architectural perspective is insightful in just how much it considers and integrates locale. And his use of layering really produces an uncommon product in the luxury resort hotel world—his stamp is truly singular.” Jenn’s top spot at The Chedi: The spa, with its glass-ceilinged roof and views of Switzerland vistas. 2 Ana Maria Martinez-Stumpo interior designer Ana Maria certainly knows how to create an entrance—to a home, that is—and she shares her entryway expertise in her new column, Design Journal. “The piece is called First Impressions and this will focus on the entryway of a home and how to design it in order to create not only a great fi rst impression but a lasting one,” she shares. Ana Maria’s top three holiday home accents: Candles, a wreath, and a Christmas tree with a lot of personality.

Contributors 3 Jenny Peters writer Amid whitewashed villas, serene city views and rich ancient history, Athens provided a bounty of memorable moments for Jenny Peters, which she beautifully describes in her article, “Adventures in Athens.” “Standing on the Acropolis for the fi rst time, in the shadow of the Parthenon, with the city spread out below on a brilliantly sunny day was a breathtaking experience,” she recalls. Jenny’s top three must-see sites in Athens: The Acropolis/ Parthenon, Hadrian’s Arch and Mount Lycabettus. 4 Melinda Serra interior designer The holidays are the perfect time for family and friends to gather together, especially around the dinner table, and Melinda Serra knows just how to create sure-to-impress table settings. “Holiday table settings using everyday table elements like white dishes are my favorite,” Melinda shares. “Nonscented candles are a must, and simple florals with seasonal flowers add to the festivity of the occasion. Simply adding a sprig of holly or natural wood tied to the napkins will elevate the fun.” Melinda’s favorite holiday table-topper: A bottle of champagne.

5 Danielle Accovelli writer Don’t expect to find Danielle battling her way through crowds of last-minute holiday shoppers; she is always prepared for the season of gifting, sharing some of her inspirational ideas in the “Holiday Gift Guide.” “I always like to give my gifts a personal touch—make them something unique that my friends and family will truly love,” she says, “so I try pick out presents throughout the year instead of at once.” Danielle’s top three locales for unique finds: antique shops, hole-in-the-wall bookstores and custom, handmade jewelry boutiques. 6 Tony Florez photographer Tony Florez certainly knows how to capture the essence of a moment, and for the winter photo shoot, he perfectly portrays the many wonders of a winter wedding in Orange County at the premier Pelican Hill Resort. “If you just see the cover,” Tony says, “it was so fun to get that vibrancy on the camera—all the pieces came together with such eye-catching color.” Tony’s top three winter activities: Running, watching movies, and spending time down at the beach and with his children.

Arriving in Athens for the first time, the sense of excitement is palpable. For everywhere you turn in this sprawling 6,000-year-old city by the sea there’s something so ancient, it takes your breath away. With the classically beautiful Grande Hotel Bretagne on Syntagma Square as a home base, everything this cradle of antiquity has to offer is just outside your door. Built in 1842, the lavish, five-star property with a world-class spa delivers top-notch service and a truly spectacular view of both the Acropolis and Greek Parliament from its GB Roof Garden Restaurant & Bar. Here’s the place to get your bearings while enjoying the venue’s elaborate breakfast buffet. Although, dinner in the shadow of an illuminated Parthenon is an equally delicious treat, too.

As the heart of Athens’ historic city center, Syntagma Square is the perfect place to begin strolling, for walking is the way to see the city’s fascinating array of historical monuments and museums, beautiful gardens and picturesque neighborhoods, along with famed shopping and dining spots nearby. If lucky enough, you might just see the changing of the guard at the neighboring Parliament building, where stoic Greek soldiers adorned in puff-sleeved, skirted white uniforms with matching white tights and red shoes topped with large black pompoms, continually guard the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. (Snap a photo beside the guard, but don’t expect him to move a muscle.)

Although it’s tough to top this bucket-list experience, back down the hill at Dionysus Zonar’s, on Robertou Galli Street, is more than fortifying. Gaze back at the Acropolis while fueling up with a sampling of Greek appetizers: tangy tzatziki, eggplant salad, fishroe-eggs spread and olives, of course. Also try the traditional foods of Greece at this iconic eatery, from Moussaka and Dolmadakia to Gyros, or sample a sublime, modern take on salmon grilled with an almond crust. Pair these with a crisp Greek wine—organic Karipidis Sauvignon Blanc is a brilliant choice—for the a perfect ending to a perfect Greek adventure.

For a completely different exploration, plunge into the Plaka, the oldest neighborhood in Athens, at the northern base of the Acropolis. Here, and in the adjoining Monastiraki, are countless shops, street vendors, picturesque enclaves and a plethora of tavernas (bars and restaurants). Look for handmade ceramics, as Greeks have been making pottery here for thousands of years. When hunger hits, venture off the beaten track at Filistron on Apostolou Pavlou Street, a favorite local hangout, and go upstairs to its pretty patio, which pairs stunning views with the best Greek salad (one featuring a slab of Feta cheese the size of your hand) you’ll ever taste.

Beyond Athens

Head southwest toward the Acropolis, but enter from the pedestrian-only Dionysiou Areopagitou Street to find the very modern Acropolis Museum. It’s here where original pieces of the Parthenon Frieze, as well as Caryatids (the maiden statues that upheld the porch of Erechtheion Temple) and many other antiquities are housed. It’s a wonderful, award-winning museum, so, for just 5 Euros, plan to spend a few hours exploring and learning the long history of the Acropolis.

From here, climb up 1300 feet, pay the 12 Euro entry fee and find yourself at the top of the world—or, the spot acknowledged as the start of modern civilization. It’s a heady moment, standing on the Acropolis and looking up at the colossal columns of the ruined Parthenon, and yet it’s easy to imagine you’re in the time of Pericles and the “Golden Age” of Athens, when man’s concepts of democracy, philosophy, theater and the arts took shape. Explore the Temple of Athena, the Erechtheion and the Odeon, all part of a massive hilltop that once served as the heart of the city. You’ll find the views here are heady too. Be sure to look down the side of the south wall, at the Theatre of Dionysus, one of the first-ever constructed, and, a bit further beyond, at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, where 16 massive columns are all that remains of Roman Emperor Hadrian’s 104-column edifice to the god erected in 131 AD. Nearby these ruins is Hadrian’s Arch, the symbolic gate of Athens.

Just above Syntagma Square, Kolonaki’s stylish top shops await; then, for a real workout, continue to the top of Mount Lycabettus, the tallest hill in town (or ride up on the funicular). From here unfolds the whole city. For a spectacular Greek lunch to match the view, stop in at Orizontes, the restaurant hanging off the edge of the hill, and order their delicious three-course daily special. Absorb even more culture and history at the National Archaeological Museum in the same neighborhood, and also visit the world-renowned Benaki Museum, which presents epochs of fine art. And, located just behind Parliament, be sure to meander through the National Gardens to view Zappeion, the massive Neoclassical structure that’s been home to both Olympic games and political powwows. Stop for a sip in the pretty garden café nearby before making your way to three of the most iconic structures in Athens (ones spotted earlier from the top of the Acropolis). Just southeast is the huge Panathenaic Stadium, looking just as it did when Herodes Atticus built the marble-seated stadium here in 140 AD (this is also where the Olympic flame begins its journey). Just west, take in the Temple of Olympian Zeus, then stand below Hadrian’s Arch for the quintessential photo of your Athens adventure—leaving room in the frame for the Acropolis, naturally. Regardless of whether or not you snap that perfect photo, Athens will live as a snapshot in your memory. For if you love history, culture and gastronomy, there really is no place like it on Earth.

NEUTRAL TER R ITORY Shady Canyon

GREAT ROOM Creating the dramatic great room is the deliberate combination of organic materials, such as reclaimed wood beams accented by a stainless steel fireplace, juxtaposing Old World appeal and sleek modern day architecture. “We wanted this home to have a fresh and current look,” says designer Courtney Ziething. As maintaining

a sense of aesthetic continuity throughout was a priority, “I reflected what was on the outside and wrapped it on the inside,” she adds. Here, expansive floor-to-ceiling glass doors designed to disappear seamlessly unite interior living spaces, with a covered loggia overlooking the abundant hillside.

MELDING THE CHARM OF AUTHENTIC ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE WITH CONTEMPORARY DESIGN SENSIBILITIES, A WARM TUSCAN TURNAROUND FINDS A HOME IN SHADY CANYON. written by AMY ADAMS & DANIELLE ACCOVELLI architect RICHARD KRANTZ designer COURTNEY LAWRENCE ZIETHING builder RODEO HOMES listing agent JACQUELINE THOMPSON

A

s if transported from the lush farmlands of rural Tuscany to the high hills of Shady Canyon, this rustic, European-inspired estate flawlessly blends Old World architecture with warm, contemporary interiors to create a tranquil and serene journey to times past. From the intimate foyer lined with artisan-applied stone walls to the spacious living area featuring expansive stainless steel windows looking out into the romantic courtyard (in what is a very European aesthetic), the estate’s architecture unfolds like a story, which is precisely how famed architect Richard Krantz approached its design—collecting all materials, then adding character, life and personality, for an absolutely stunning result. For Krantz, a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who hails from a family of artists, helming a home’s architecture is all about the organic creative process—often he draws inspiration from his travels with the intention of attempting to capture, then translate, the essence of what moves him into his designs. Krantz mastered exactly this to produce the architectural elements of the Tuscan farmhouse, collaborating with designer Courtney Ziething to create light, composed interiors with sleek and smooth lines that blend opposing textures of authentic, repurposed materials. The home’s design narrative truly begins, of course, with the entrance. Not just a simple façade, this bespoke entryway abounds with layers, giving it a three-dimensional form reminiscent of sculpture, while ancient European

elements such as a grand arcade pair with modern stainless steel windows to achieve the intended effect. The story continues through the home’s darker, more subdued spaces, from the classically inspired foyer and courtyard to the kitchen. Designed by Courtney Ziething—who won the Sub Zero contest as winner of the Orange County “Best of the Best” Kitchen Design Contest—this absolute masterpiece is fit for the finest epicurean, radiating with an open, relaxed ambiance brought to full effect by towering reclaimed wood beams, glass lighting and custom white mahogany wire-brushed wood cabinetry. Turning the page to the upstairs, the home’s bygone Tuscan charm resonates strongly in the master bedroom with its attached, sculptural loggias and breathtaking views of the dry creek bed, all making for a restful experience. In true European fashion, the estate also features a rambling tower, which Krantz designed to be the home’s marquee, adding compositional interest to the building, especially when viewed from the exterior. It is in the expansive backyard, however, that this exquisite estate truly traces its Tuscan roots. While two rows of columns and impressive round arches give it a rustic farmhouse appeal, stone and brickwork raise the level of meticulous authenticity. Krantz, who views these type of details like grammar, works directly with masons, providing three-dimensional models and offering his expertise when needed to make sure every detail remains true at every step—in this case he even made sure bricks were undulating, not perfectly straight. In the end, the property has integrity, character and an authenticity worthy of the rolling Tuscan hillsides. Bellisima!

ENTRY Enter the home and one immediately gravitates through a romantic arcade of light-hued stone walls adorned with custom iron lamps charted by unexpected nooks that lead to an intimate interior entry, a space Ziething designed to “look like it was the initial structure, with everything else built around it.” With wood-framed doorways and a reflective crystal chandelier, she envisioned this vignette as an area one would “pause, greet guests, or take a moment to say goodbye.”

Shady Canyon DINING AREA In a large room adjacent to the kitchen, the dining area opens to a courtyard and fountain, lending beauty and tranquility to the space. Two unique Italian light fixtures— made just like jewelry, each polished nickel ring hand bent and welded together—serve as a focal point and echo natural light filtered in through the French doors.

KITCHEN A 14-foot contemporary baker’s style table made of Calacatta stone with a clean waterfall edge anchors the capacious kitchen, while appliances remain neatly tucked and inconspicuous behind custom cabinets. Accentuating the kitchen’s smooth and slick qualities are stainless steel highlights and handmade lighting that, suspended above the island, further illuminates the intended old-withnew atmosphere, “giving it a combination of masculine and feminine,” notes Ziething.

WINE ROOM The palette of soft, creamy and buttery tones amid French white oak and limestone continues downstairs to a relaxed wine room complete with a temperature-controlled cellar. Adjacent to this space, the floor also includes a bonus room, full kitchen, fitness center and guest suite—all with private entry.

STAIRCASE The wire-brushed, handcracked mahogany elevator element, with its flush hidden door integrated with streamline open risers and a striking chandelier soaring to the flight above, creates an inviting display that magically defines this staircase, without compromising additional floor space. “By putting the elevator in the middle of the stair as an architectural element and using open wood treads to provide light and interest, the [space] became an unexpected showpiece, recounts architect Richard Krantz.

Shady Canyon

EXTERIOR Enveloped by natural preserve and canyon views, from the exterior one can visualize the estate— reminiscent of a Tuscan farmhouse retreat—in all its proportions, punctuated by intimate loggias, a beautiful pool, and a cozy sitting area, all of which further complement its serene and stately appeal.

ALLURE

Anchoring a remote yet well-connected village in central Switzerland, The Chedi Andermatt & Residences is more than just another generously dimensioned resort hotel. It’s the modernist realization of Jean-Michel Gathy—one that goes above and beyond!

written by JENN THORNTON

Chedi

LOBBY A hotel needs a grand first impression, “and you always want to arrive to a welcoming lobby that has a good design and creativity,” says designer JeanMichel Gathy, who drew inspiration for the The Chedi Andermatt from the chalets and granddame hotels of the past in balance with his signature symmetrical lines.

Chedi

B

elgian-born Jean-Michel Gathy, of Denniston International Architects & Planners, is no stranger to excess, having conceptualized the design of some of the world’s finest hotels, from the Cheval Blanc Randheli, Maldives (where a second honeymoon found royals Prince William and Kate Middleton) to the Aman Canal Grande in Venice, Italy (site of newly minted Mr. and Mrs. Clooney’s wedding reception). In the post of principal designer, Gathy has masterminded a new class of world-class resort hotels, where unparalleled comfort collides with contemporary architectural perspective. In the case of the sustainably constructed, Swiss Alps-surrounded Chedi Andermatt & Residences—the beating heart of the sleepy Andermatt village in picturesque Urseren Valley—this intersection is truly elevating. Those in the property’s luxurious fold enjoy relative isolation, but in prime proximity to major airports and rail service, not to mention a surfeit of amenities—from deluxe dining and a Wine and Cigar Library to a 2,400-sqaure-foot glass-ceilinged spa. And while all this certainly impresses, it’s the property’s aesthetic that assaults the senses—striking first with colossal scope, then with sheer, unadulterated design, stewarded by Gathy. Taking an open-plan approach to The Chedi Andermatt, Gathy evolved the concept of Swiss-chalet style to suit contemporary tastes. Outside, he endowed the structure a pitched roof and timbered façade that recall time-honored alpine appeal. Inside, however, he introduced sleek lines; earthy hues; rich woods; refined finishes; and locally sourced materials.

Gathy’s sumptuous convergence of form and formula creates a kind of psychology, something “totally sensorial,” he has described. And, as monumentally modernist as it all is, “It’s all about emotions, about feelings, about the feeling of being comfortable… at ease… of being warm.” Enter 200 log-burning fireplaces in an array of cocooning, lounge-like common areas. Here, the lushly furred luxuriate in an ambient elegance afforded by a radiant, glamorous cast. Wooded pillars and walls further the restorative feeling, while gleaming, light-capturing glass surfaces reflect shifting day-to-night vistas. Floors covered in local stone, slatted wood screens, cow-hide carpets and an abundance of lighting in both the ceiling and floor, offer sophisticated rusticity while playing backdrop to book nooks and other cozy-up corners. To bridge interior and exterior, Gathy relied on terraces. Among the more unique touches are antique lanterns on wooded walls behind beds, creating a starry evening-sky feel, along with a clever upgrade to the often overlooked check-in area—here, a “bar,” complete with cocktails and a span of 30 meters, promotes the standard reception scene to a Gathy-classified “super convivial” new level. “I think a top class hotel means it has creativity—or else you are like everyone else,” he shares. Keeping the scene singular is Gathy’s use of layering—essential, he insists, for giving a substantial—and substantially modern—resort hotel a cozy, athome quality. “When you enter a space [and] know everything,” he has said, “I don’t like that. I like striptease. I like the discovery.” Hence, “every piece of the layering is human scale. … The art is putting them together.”

True, but as The Chedi Andermatt proves, it takes an artist to create a masterpiece—and a village.

Chedi

DINING AREA Showcasing a quartet of “theater kitchens, The Restaurant, designed by SPIN Design Studio from Japan, one of seven dining options at The Chedi Andermatt, flaunts rich woods and radiant lighting, for a decidedly atmospheric effect.

Chedi

Chedi OPPOSITE A union of Asian Zen and peak-chic, each of The Chedi Andermatt’s 104 rooms are awash in dark Alpine wood and feature soft leather chairs and sofas, panoramic windows and open fireplaces beckoning the landscape beyond. Although elegant, these spaces are also inviting. “I think casual smart is the answer to luxury hotels today,” says Gathy, adding that the future of upscale hospitality design is heading in more of a “tailor-made” direction.

BALCONY Balconies availing astounding views of the surrounding Swiss landscape are features of all accommodations at The Chedi Andermatt— the perfect spot to spend luxuriously lazy days or breathing in brisk mountain air.

Chedi

Chedi OPPOSITE

Rooted in holistic wellness, the 2,400-square-foot Spa at The Chedi Andermatt features a glass roof and pond-like pools for serenity and reflection, harmoniously bridging indoors and out.

THE SPA

“People like a hotel to be a one-off—something special, unique, creative and different,” says Gathy. Just such a scheme can be found in the spa, where wooden floorboards, carpets, sofas and a 35-foot indoor pool sits amid eight crackling fireplaces in the Relaxation Lounge. Here, Alpine woods enhance an already warm atmosphere.

DESIGN JOURNAL

FIRST Impressions Home Design

It’s often said, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. This thinking pertains not only to individuals, but also their dwellings, so it’s important to approach designing your home’s entryway with this in mind. The entryway is, after all, where people get their first taste of what makes you, well, you. It should be infused with personality and warmth, plus a little bit of that “wow” factor, too. While you are no doubt a complex individual, to design a dream entryway that perfectly embodies your singular style, choose an inspirational theme around which to create the space. Once you’ve called on that inspiration, determine how you will style the space, applying some essential considerations to ensure that your entry’s first impression is one that all will remember.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT

Mixing textures, such as crackle on wood and copper leaf on metal finishes, creates interest in an entry; personal portraits bring warmth; and driftwood sculptures add natural elements to the space.

1. Find a focal point. It could be a large painting, a mirror or something else, but determine a central anchor in order to ground the space.

2. Accessorize. Complement the chosen focal point by accessorizing. Add some personal touches, like family photos, monograms, or a family crest. 3. Give it life. Remind guests that your home is a place of life. Plants are a great way to suffuse the space with that living, ever-evolving feel.

4. Put people at home. Warm colors, lit candles and/or accent lighting make for an inviting and welcoming refuge.

With all this in mind myself, and enlisting a large asymmetrical mirror as my focal point, plus decorative items, like the driftwood horsehead on the table, and the jug on the floor, I then added a painted wedding portrait, some accent lighting and live plants. Together, these elements gave me just what I hoped for in my entryway—a great first impression that will last. Follow this simple advice and yours will too! 102

This stunning entry foyer to the Hinkley Lighting Showroom in Dallas was designed by McDennon to draw customers into the space. Naturally, she decided to start off with a bang, creating a grand entryway that used oversized doors and a turquois lacquer to add a fresh, fun pop of color.

Lisa McDennon For designer Lisa McDennon, walking into a new home inspires the same feeling as looking at a blank canvas—endless possibilities. From remodeling and rebuilding to designing the interiors of a brand-new dwelling, McDennon takes a ground-up approach to each project with which she’s presented, creating sophisticated surrounds with her signature, timeless aesthetic. “I enjoy the process of starting with one- or twodimensional drawings and just a concept,” shares McDennon, “then taking that and bringing it to life is tremendously exciting.” And her repertoire is certainly growing with a remarkable oeuvre ranging from a small, private residence in Laguna to a host of international venues. Yet, it’s the natural beauty and surrounds of Southern California that provide McDennon with an unending source of inspiration as she prefers to take a more conceptual approach to her designs, using only organic materials to give interiors a crisp, clean look. Now, with the opening of her new Laguna boutique, Nuance, McDennon is bringing her chic coastal style to home furnishings with beautifully curated collections infused with her trademark custom appeal responsible for earning the interior talent a dedicated cliental. “It’s one thing to just create a pretty space,” McDennon says, “but to create a space that really makes someone feel better— that’s very fulfilling.” And with both interior design and home furnishings under her belt, McDennon knows just how to turn a house into a home. 104

THE NATURE OF OUR SUCCESS Surterre

Since our inception 8 years ago, Surterre Properties® has held one priority above all else: to provide each and every client we represent with a real estate experience of unparalleled quality. And while we firmly believe that the principles of old fashioned service transcend any numerical value, it’s clear: the way we do business renders

us peerless when it comes to results.

According to recent reports drawn from the MLS, we took the first spot overall in our target cities, selling

$211 MILLION - A 37% LEAD OVER THE NEAREST COMPETITOR.

Given that these numbers come from the industry’s most reliable and factual source - unlike charts our competition is known to promote - it’s safe to say our success is as pure and steadfast as the crashing waves that grace our golden coast. And what testimony could be more compelling?

simply brilliant Just as guests arrived at South Coast Plaza’s Garden Terrace for the Festival of Children Foundation’s Opening Night Party in September—kicking off National Child Awareness Month with a shining example of support—the stars illuminated the evening sky. The benevolent gathering hosted more than 450 people who mingled and sipped cocktails while the evening’s entertainment provided the background music. They then relished in a radiantly prepared meal featuring a host of international cuisines. Founder and executive director of the Festival of Children Foundation, Sandy Segerstrom

Daniels, delivered a moving address about the year’s theme, “One World,” fittingly thanking guests for helping make the world a better place for children. The highlight of the evening came when Myles Saunders, a high school student from Huntington Beach, received the coveted FRED Award (For Really Extraordinary “Do”ers), so honored for his work with the Orange County Alzheimer’s Association. As the event came to a close, guests took one last look at the brilliance above, a poignant reminder of the evening’s true stars—the children they came to support.

Exactly that, talk and laughter permeated the elegant surrounds providing a place for guests to enjoy an afternoon while also raising awareness about human trafficking. Acclaimed documentary producer and keynote speaker, Jody Hassett Sanchez, delivered a powerful speech on the crisis, while emcee and former news anchor,

Ed Arnold, introduced an exclusive interview with trafficking survivor Shyima Hall. Following these moving addresses, the luncheon took a lively turn with a spirited fundraiser, bidding and an opportunity drawing that raised more than $75,000 for the Center. Ending on an uplifting note, the Center announced the winners of its inaugural Diamond Award, given to those whose continued commitment to promoting justice for victims of human trafficking prove most deserving of the honor. As always, a real jewel.

noteworthy night! Harmonious melodies drifted through the crisp fall air as more than 300 elegantly attired guests arrived at The Westin South Coast Plaza on September 25 for the Pacific Symphony’s Opening Night party, a sophisticated soiree held in honor of Music Director Carl St. Clair’s 25th anniversary with the orchestra. With the evening’s proceeds benefitting the Symphony’s art and education programs, festivities began poolside, where guests mingled, sipped cocktails and noshed on gourmet hors d’oeuvres while guitarist Eric Henderson strummed in the background. As the sun began to

set, crystal and silver adornments lit up the Terrace Pavilion, as attendees admired walls lined with images paying homage to St. Clair before sitting down to a sumptuous meal. The musical maestro was honored during the bespoke reception, which brimmed with a bounty of entertainment, including performances by Pacific Symphony musicians and the John Alexander Singers. The evening reached a high note during the Opening Night Concert in the Renee and Henry Segerstom Concert Hall, where famed classical violinist Joshua Bell bowed a breathtaking performance. novel evening Talk about a lit clique! More than 240 philanthropists, literacy experts and passionate education supporters turned up at the buzzing Island Hotel in Newport Beach for the Literacy Project’s 5th Annual Benefit Gala, aptly named “What Dreams Are Made Of.” After savoring a selection of expertly crafted cocktails amid serene scenes afforded by the hotel, gala-goers were then treated to an exquisite four-course meal. The Literacy Project’s Board Chairman Doug Freeman delivered an exceptionally heartfelt message about the agency’s success in ensuring the gift of literacy

to at-risk children before all made their way to the dance floor to enjoy the swinging sounds of The Society. But it was the play What Dreams Are Made Of, produced by the staff and students of the Orange County School of the Arts that made the evening truly unforgettable. The remarkably touching play about a shy student who overcomes her reading challenges through the Literacy Project capped an evening that ended on a most uplifting note, raising more than $100,000 to bring the agency’s program to struggling readers across Southern California. When the time came to bestow the coveted Miracle Maker Award on yet another well-deserving recipient, it went to the Cavaricci Family. This small neighborhood bistro, with its ever-changing, yet always delectable menu, inspired by flavors from France and the Mediterranean, has recently been hailed as one of Bravo! and Tom Colicchio’s Best New Restaurants in the U.S., and is currently enjoying a taste of the limelight. Even so, the dining room remains decidedly subdued, intimate and primed for a retro Parisian dinner date with seasonally inspired French cuisine prepared by chef Eric Samaniego. After a Sazerac apéritif with cognac instead of rye, try the Roasted Bone Marrow with grilled bread and a lightly dressed salad of grapes and bitter greens as well as Charcuterie composed of rustic headcheese and pâté to start. For les plats principaux, indulge in the Skuna Bay Salmon with a sharp, whole-grain mustard crust, or the Skate Grenobloise (elevating the bottom-feeder to unexpected heights) sitting crisply crusted atop haricot verts with foamy brown butter and fried capers. When the romance of France calls, answer with a trip to Little Sparrow Cafe and sample a bit of provincial Paris on your plate. Bon appetite! LittleSparrowCafe.com

Taste of India

Table Tamarind

IMMERSE YOURSELF in the bountiful flavors of authentic Indian cuisine at Tamarind of London, Newport Beach. The local hotspot is perfect for a casual dinner or late night out, with its spacious dining area curated to portray a contemporary Indian aesthetic, featuring an open-air patio with exquisite fire pits and a lively bar serving up a host of finely crafted cocktails. But it’s the sumptuous dishes inspired by the very heartbeat of India’s flourishing culture, however, that makes Tamarind of London such a thriving mecca of culinary diversity. Chef Alfred Prasad and chef Imran Ali strive to make every meal a complete sensory experience with expertly curated dishes that flawlessly infuse authentic Indian cuisine with seasonal California ingredients. Take, for example, the Saffrani Machi, a culinary treasure composed of charbroiled Chilean Seabass in a saffron-ginger-green chili marinade plated with apricot curry sauce and to-die-for Indian risotto. Or, indulge in the Dakshini Jhinga, a decedent coconut prawn curry made with jumbo prawns swimming in a sea of rich traditional sauce. With dishes such as these, Tamarind of London serves up a masterful epicurean journey to satisfy all palates. TamarindOfLondon.com

Table Oak

HIDDEN ON THE FRINGE OF FASHION ISLAND, Oak Grill is a true culinary sanctuary. Stepping from the street onto the wooden deck, one immediately feels a sense of calm amid the surrounds of its brilliant lanternlit patio. The comforts of an al fresco dining experience enhance Oak Grill’s menu of contemporary California selections. Classically trained chef Marc Johnson cooks with globally inspired flavors—ranging from Spain and South America to the American South—to highlight the state’s diverse harvests. After all, he says, “California cuisine shares so many different regions of [food], from Asian to Indian, while focusing on keeping things light and fresh.” These worldwide influences merge together in dishes combining farmers market finds with artfully crafted comfort fare. At once progressive and familiar, the feel-good food and relaxed setting at Oak Grill encourages diners to unwind and enjoy the night. Even late, the After-Hours Menu plates classic comforts, like the gloriously gluttonous Fries Poutine: crispy French Fries with pillow-soft interiors topped with sausage gravy, tomatoes and squeaky cheese curds. With both relaxation and indulgence awaiting, this hideaway is one mighty Oak. OakGrillNB.com
