PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Welcome to another issue of bask Magazine! Oh my, how time flies! We are already through the first quarter of 2016, and it’s certainly been entertaining, to say the least. With all the election campaign drama and ever-changing weather patterns, there is never a dull moment.

I’m always working ahead on upcoming issues, and often it seems like my days, weeks, and months are passing by much quicker than I’d like them to. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy my profession, mostly because of all the talented and inspirational people I work with and meet along the journey—day in, day out. I have said this before, but there really isn’t any better description than to say that each issue is a labor of love… the result of our dedicated team putting hours of work—and their hearts and souls—into this magazine. I’m always amazed when I finally hold the finished product in my hands and open up the pages.

JOLIE ADAMS, Publisher & Co-Founder jolie@baskmagazine.com

ON THE COVER...

I always love to point you in the direction of the issue’s fashion shoot, as I get to personally help put this into action with my team of talented people. This issue, we happily worked with some of our favorite fashion partners: Mark Pomerantz, Novecento Boutique, Winston’s Crown Jewelers, The Passionate Collector and Cottage Colour. Mark Pomerantz, and his lovely brand director, Simara Nahabedian, personally styled our male model onsite, and it was such a treat to be able to watch them work at their craft. I’m especially nostalgic about this issue’s Looking Back article, written by Jenn Thornton (page 130). For those of you who are horseracing enthusiasts or just interested in a bit of history, this is a wonderful story about the history of Santa Anita Park and Seabiscuit’s winning run there in 1940. A thoroughbred of Arcadia, California, Santa Anita Park is considered by many to be the world’s most beautiful racetrack. It’s also home to many prestigious races, including the Santa Anita Derby. This track is especially close to my heart, as my grandfather often used to take me there as a little girl, and I am pretty sure he and my grandmother were at that the track the very day the Seabiscuit won in 1940, but I would need to ask my father and let you know. Ah... fond memories, the stories that touch our hearts and make life so spectacular. That’s a wonderful life in my memory book.

Pub Note

Have a beautiful spring and we will be back with lots more amazing stories and travel spots to share with you this summer. Until then… on the cover 18K rose gold pave diamond link bracelet over 19 carats, available at Winston’s Crown Jewelers Newport Beach. Ivory mixed lace dress with fitted peek-a-boo bodice and pleated skirt, available at Novecento Boutique Newport Beach. Charcoal grey 3-piece suit, white cotton shirt and gold houndstooth pocket square by Mark Pomerantz.

A place seemingly frozen in time, Cuba’s rich history, music and cuisine create a warm, vibrant and welcoming culture. In “Cuban Revival,” Michelle exquisitely details her travels through this blossoming tourist destination. (page 70) “My fondest memory in Havana was drinking mojitos in the garden of Hotel Nacional and listening to Latin jazz while overlooking the ocean,” she says. Michelle’s top spots to experience Cuban culture: Havana, Cienfuegos and Trinidad.

JENN THORNTON writer

Founder of The Bikini Chef, a brand that represents living well through healthy foods, Susan Irby certainly knows how to create fresh, flavorful dishes. In “Neighborhood Chef,” she talks with chef Alan Jackson of Lemonade about his own approach to healthy cooking. (page 128) “I see chef Jackson as a man of simplicity, whether it is spending time with his family on their ranch or creating delicious, fresh, wholesome foods for his customers—a simple approach seems to bring him great joy.” Susan’s top meals to make in spring: shrimp vegetable carpaccio, artichoke eggs benedict and caviar feta hearts of romaine.

A sea-bound stunner, the Royal Clipper is a beautifully-appointed luxury ship that creates a Caribbean cruising experience like no other. Always looking for a new adventure, Jenny Peters sets sail on this most stately ship, sharing her experience in “High Seas.” (page 66) “On the Royal Clipper, the first night is incredible, as at sunset they begin to unfurl the massive sails that are all lit up with tiny, twinkling lights. It’s absolutely breathtaking.” Jenny’s top musttry activities while in the Caribbean: snorkeling around the coral reefs, stand-up paddling and visiting the islands’ gardens.

Occupying a storied spot not only in the racing world, but also in Southern California history, Santa Anita Park’s allure is undeniable. Also a fan of the races, Jenn Thornton delves into the history of this Old Hollywood hotspot in “Looking Back.” (page 130) “The grounds at the racetrack are gorgeous, but the place is best experienced during a race, when the track is truly thunderous with the sound, and sight, of breathtaking steeds at full speed,” she says. Jenn’s top spring destinations: Lake Tahoe, the Huntington Library in Pasadena and The Getty.

BETH FHANER writer

Beth Fhaner gets the bottomline on looking beautiful naturally at ROOTS, where owner Laura Linsenmayer shares her top beauty picks from the non-toxic cosmetic shop. (page 32) “You can feel good about using any of the beauty products offered at ROOTS,” says Beth. “I’m a big fan of Simply Eden’s goat milk soap and body lotion—these luxurious, handmade products are great for sensitive skin, and I love trying all of their various scents.” Beth’s top spring beauty picks: bronzer, rosecolored lipstick and a light, fruity floral fragrance.

HELEN LUNDEBERG: A RETROSPECTIVE

Through May 30

A pioneering figure in 20-century California art, Helen Lundeberg redefined the Post-Surrealist world with landmark paintings that delved into the realms of psychology and personal expression. Later in life, Lundeberg simplified her style into broad, flat areas of color, bringing de Chirico-like ambiguities of space to architectural and landscape compositions while still maintaining the enigmatic mood of her earlier surrealist imagery. In a stunning exhibition featuring approximately 60 paintings, Laguna Art Museum brilliantly showcases the life and works of this influential Post-Surrealist artist.

The organic beauty of Carmel Valley Ranch is something to marvel—and indulge WRITTEN BY AMY ADAMS PHOTOS COURTESY OF CARMEL VALLEY RANCH

Nestled in the rolling hills of Carmel Valley Ranch is 500 acres of beauty. Bliss. Relaxation. Reflection. A haven surrounded by still ponds and mountains picturesquely covered in green grasses and decades-old oak and pine trees, it’s easy to feel like you’ve escaped the day-to-day monotony and landed in a place far away at the Ranch. Here, despite the beautiful accommodations, one is inevitably drawn to the tranquility of being outdoors, where silence is golden and the only audible sounds emanate from deer delicately prancing through the woods and the flapping wings of wild—and friendly—turkeys soaring overhead.

Well

Of several explorable hiking paths on property, most favored is Horseshoe Trail. On a sunny morning, venture from the Lodge and wind through Vineyard Path—nearly 3 1/2 acres of pinot noir grapes planted in 2010, overseen by resident vintner Peter Figge, which recently made their debut on the Ranch last year. Pace yourself as you climb nearly a mile toward Hilltop Corral to an oversized wooden yoga platform. Whether or not you’re an active yogi, the view from here overlooks a serene canyon, offering an unparalleled venue upon which to practice or meditate. With winter and spring temperatures running slightly cool, this excursion is better experienced later in the day or during summer and fall. If you’re lucky, you’ll plan a visit to the Ranch during a weekend retreat from Urban Remedy (for which Cindy Crawford is a partner and brand ambassador). Dubbed “Destination Detox,” these weekend retreats find founder, licensed acupuncturist, herbalist and certified Chinese nutritionist Neka Pasquale guiding guests through a series of healthy diet plans. With the focus on health and wellness, weekends begin with Neka preparing a succession of nutritious meals during the first couple of days and an organic juice cleanse during the last couple of days, with some of her homemade savory snacks (think Cheesy Kale Chips and Superfood Trail Mix) available throughout the day. Raised in a food-loving family, Neka’s passion for flavor and healthy eating shines through the entire Urban Remedy line of organic juice cleanses, raw snacks and other related items (many of her delicious recipes can be found in her book Urban Remedy, The 4-Day Home Cleanse Retreat). The Ranch’s relaxing environ provides a natural setting for an indulgent detox retreat. baskmagazine.com

n addition to its own vineyard and salt house, the Ranch also features an organic garden of fruits and vegetables. While it’s certainly becoming more common to see resorts growing their own produce on-site, it’s definitely refreshing to taste all the flavors, a visual feast that Executive Chef Tim Wood’s innovative, homestyle culinary creations via a collaborative team of talented artisans, also on location, help bring to life.

After a morning spent roving about, a stop at Spa Aiyana, meaning “eternal blossom,” is a delightful way to recoup and unwind. The spa’s wooden façade is unimposing and quaintly tucked into a hillside, but inside, more than 10,000 square feet of peaceful space with an all-natural aesthetic is revealed, with nearly every treatment room offering a private veranda overlooking the valley below. Throughout the seasons, a wide scattering of florals, such as lavender, as well as herbs and botanicals, are harvested and processed to craft unique spa treatments and rituals for every guest. The Alchemy Massage, which blends essential oils based on your selected alchemy card, and an organic facial are two standout restorative treatments that utilize some of the seasons’ harvests, penetrating the senses and relaxing the body. Before or after a treatment, a Spa Aiyana experience wouldn’t be complete without using the Somadome, also known as “peace in a pod.” Designed as a lounge pod, the Somadome features an interplay of three elements—binaural beat meditations, energy healing tiles and color therapy—making it a calming refuge for restoration and personal meditation.

Cap off the day with a sunset trail ride that winds through the hillsides of Carmel Valley, where the simple sounds of nature abound, sunlight warms the soul and the colors of the sky leave you in awe. A place where all can be forgotten, where nothing matters… just the beauty of the moment, a respite from all else, if only for a while.

HEALTH & WELLNESS | OMG + BASK

OMG OC AESTHETICS Beauty is far more than skin deep at boutique-style medi spa OMG OC Aesthetics— it’s a results-driven business aimed at transforming lives through cutting-edge treatments and client-first care. Here, Managing Director Annette Richardson shares why their approach truly makes a difference. What drives OMG OC Aesthetics to do its best work? When we follow our passion, we naturally do our best work. Every practitioner at OMG OC Aesthetics has a passion to deliver the best care, treatments and results possible. It’s very rewarding when our patients know that they are receiving the best work, and it shows. What is the core motivator of your practice—and your practitioners? To make a positive difference in our patients’ lives. It’s very rewarding to assist and observe our patients go through one of our transformations. When we help patients make changes that improve their skin, body or life, everyone’s motivated. How does OMG OC Aesthetics’ treatments reflect and emphasize radiance from the inside out? We are different from most medical spa-type practices. We believe in providing a ‘whole’ variety of treatments that focus on a 360-degree angle of age management. With our FDA-approved Nexalin brain therapy, in which we uniquely combine light therapy during the 40-minute treatment, the patient is treated for anxiety, depression, stress, and insomnia. The patient then transforms internally—that radiates youth and vitality.

Talk about your concierge-style approach. What does this entail? We believe in handling the patients’ program and process in a concierge-style way. If our patients have any questions or concerns, we are available anytime. We want our patients to know that we are just as committed to their programs as they are. When we stay involved the way we do, it makes a huge difference with a positive end result. We want every patient to get the proper attention they deserve. In what ways does your practice aspire to be an industry innovator? We love researching! We are constantly researching the latest cutting-edge technologies. We test and compare all technologies before introducing it to our patients. We want to be a pioneer in our industry, but only if it provides the best results possible. With our Stem Cell therapy procedure, our patients are seeing remarkable results. The future is very bright and exciting!

Annette_OMG

Talk about your “Transformation” platform—how does it provide the best possible results for clients? Our practice believes in the ‘wow’ factor. In order to be ‘wowed,’ a transformation must occur. Therefore, we provide treatments and protocols that transform the eyes, skin, body and life. We placed the most cutting-edge, result-driven treatments in each category to make it simple for the patient to decide what area they want to start the transformation in. What is the OMG OC Aesthetics difference that keeps clients coming back? We have been called a boutique-style practice, which we take as a compliment. The experience of the treatment or procedure from beginning to end is very important to us. We all want to feel happy and comfortable where we work, and we want our patients to feel the same. Also, the results that we deliver is another main reason patients come back and refer their friends, coworkers and family.

Who or what influences you to do your best work? My mother used to say, ‘If you can’t do something right, you better not do it at all.’ If there is passion in what you are doing for work, and in general, you will always be working at your best potential. My children also influence me to do my best work. I know just telling them what to do won’t make an impact like showing them. Being a good example by approaching every task with intention to make it the best it can be. What is the beauty of doing business with OMG OC Aesthetics? The beauty is in the experience you will have with us. Knowing you are receiving a treatment that has proven to give you the results you are looking for. And the beauty you will feel and see in the mirror and in the eyes of those who look at you. In your experience, what are the secrets to a truly beautiful life? Everyone has a different version of what a beautiful life is. Loving what you do and doing what you love has helped so far. Not taking yourself so seriously. Focusing on how you can be of service to others. Living in the present helps you to recognize beauty around you and what you are grateful for. Being in the now is truly living timeless. And beauty is timeless and timeless is ageless.

HEALTH & WELLNESS | DR. JOE CERNI + BASK

DR. JOE CERNI Dr. Joe Cerni’s business is beauty—from the inside out. Through his practice, Forever Ageless, he approaches aesthetic and regenerative medicine with an integrative method, delivering the utmost care in a luxurious atmosphere so clients can look and feel their very best.

Beyond being the backbone of your practice, what does “forever ageless” mean to you? Forever Ageless means extending a youthful appearance and well-being to my patients. How does your work in aesthetic and regenerative medicine also encourage integrative wellness? It encompasses the whole being; the physical outward appearance and inward health. How does your practice make perfect? We don’t make perfect, we make better. We try to improve every aspect of each particular patient that we can. Describe the scope of your services— and do you have a specialty or a service that’s particularly popular with clients? The scope of our services includes all the non-invasive aesthetic procedures

available today. We specialize in Injectables, from Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, to all the possible fillers available in our industry. We have a team dedicated to all services for body contouring, skin tightening, IPL, laser hair removal, CO2 Laser, Coolsculpting, chemical peels, weight loss programs, and a beautiful selection of medical-grade skin care products. My most popular service is my injectables, which I have tried to perfect in the last 10 years. That is my favorite because it is the one thing that allows me the most flexibility and creativity.

How do you and your team ensure the best possible results for your clients? By having the most up-to-date equipment, the most modern facility, and the most current training, coupled with our personalized patient care. What do you feel is the next wave in cosmetic procedures—and how is your practice adapting? The next wave in cosmetic procedures will be in female rejuvenation. It is going to be a new frontier in aesthetic medicine. We are currently evaluating all the latest technology to determine the most effective course to pursue for the best results.

Joe Cerni

In what ways is your practice progressive—and how essential is innovation to your work?

Innovation is essential, which is why I am continually researching new and innovative techniques. When a patient comes to my practice, I look at every aspect of their well-being. I believe that to be progressive we must not just look at the outward appearance, but also inward health, and approach aesthetic and regenerative medicine with that in mind. To be progressive you must strive to not only give your patients a more youthful appearance, but a natural looking result as well. We have a beautiful state-of-the-art facility, and our customer service and quality of care is our number-one priority.

When it comes to success, it’s about industry and influence. What or who influences you to do your best work? My patients influence me when they tell me they had a great result. That encourages me to further develop myself and my techniques. What are your keys to living a truly beautiful life? The keys to living a truly beautiful life is staying healthy and being grateful. Staying healthy provides the foundation to be able to help others, and being grateful keeps you mindful of others, and as long as we have these things we can accomplish anything we want.

What prompted you to go into aesthetic and regenerative medicine— and what drives you today? What prompted me was the fact that the people who wanted to live longer also wanted to look better. What drives me is creativity, and the fact that my patients like the option of devising a plan to make them look better. I’m also driven by the challenge of finding something that I can do to make people feel better about themselves.

HEALTH & WELLNESS | DR. SARAH JEBREIL + BASK

DR. SARAH JEBREIL Having achieved top recognition in her field, Sarah Jebreil, DDS is elevating the art of dentistry.

In what ways are you innovating the field of cosmetic dentistry? As one of only 350 dentists recognized as an Accredited Member with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the world’s leading organization for clinical excellence and responsible esthetics, I focus on creating beautiful smiles in the most conservative manner using the latest industry techniques. It took me almost five years to achieve AACD accreditation, which required me to demonstrate complete mastery of dental-facial esthetics to a panel of the world’s best dentists. Because I studied in extreme detail, with one glance I can usually determine what is beautiful about the lower third of the face, or what needs to be enhanced. I use this innate skill to recreate balance and symmetry within the face. From photos and models, I can whip up a new smile for patients so they can immediately see how some simple changes can lastingly impact their image.

to create balance and harmony in the face so that patients beam with happiness and glee, that is true radiance.

Sarah Jebreil

I am a big advocate of conservative dentistry, I hate to see crowns on healthy teeth and veneers on teeth that could easily be moved with Invisalign. I love using Invisalign to get the teeth in the right position and then, with my unwavering commitment to perfection, will round off rough edges and bond-worn edges. Invisalign is one of my favorite tools… because I actually have the ability to move the teeth into the proper position of the face so that there is a beautiful, healthy amount of teeth showing when lips are at rest and in a full smile. We actually have just started offering Propel, an accelerated version of Invisalign that moves the teeth in half the time. You’re a big believer in radiance. How does your work, specifically, reflect and emphasize both internal and external radiance? Radiance. That’s my favorite word. It’s the balance of internal and external beauty. Most dentists can create pretty teeth, but to create a pretty smile, 64

baskmagazine.com

How does your practice make perfect? I have been practicing for some time with my greatest mentor, my father. Being a perfectionist with a flair for all things beautiful, I immersed myself in esthetic dentistry. I got involved early with AACD, learning, training and taking hands-on courses all over about the art of esthetic dentistry. Sarah Jebreil DDS Dental Esthetics opened this past June, and is doing extremely well. When it comes to success, it’s about industry and influence. What or who influences you to do your best work? Because of the lack of calibration among dentists in the art of excellent esthetic dentistry, it is very important to me to stay aligned with professionals and an organization such as AACD, which sets the highest standards for clinical excellence. Dentistry is progressing at such a rapid pace, so it is really important to stay abreast of changes and align yourself with those who share the same passion and vision. What makes you smile? In addition to all the great patients I get to help achieve their dream smiles, I participate in Give Back A Smile (GBAS), sponsored through the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Through GBAS, I volunteer to help change the lives of domestic violence survivors. Oftentimes these patients have suffered trauma to the face and mouth, and have physical scars when they smile. To voluntarily give them a beautiful smile and the confidence to go out into the world again always puts a smile on my face. 19742 MACARTHUR BLVD., SUITE 115, IRVINE, CA 92612 949.825.6020 | SARAHJEBREILDDS.COM

S

ometimes it’s the journey that makes a trip special and memorable, not the actual destination. This is especially true when setting sail into the Caribbean Sea aboard Star Clippers’ breathtaking ship Royal Clipper. She literally does take your breath away, the instant you spot the gorgeous vessel tied up at the dock in Barbados. And this feeling hits even before you see Royal Clipper unfurl all 56,000 square feet of her sails; once you experience this majestic moment, however, you’ll likely feel as if you’ve been transported straight onto Jack Sparrow’s Black Pearl or Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge. It’s a pirate ship for certain! But the reality is, Royal Clipper is actually much bigger than the pirate ships of yore, which were usually twoor three-masted brigantines or clipper ships—this is the only five-masted, full-rigged sailing ship in the world. She’s also the largest sailing ship on the sea, a 439-foot vessel with 42 sails and 19,000 square feet of teak decks, elegant furnishings and polished mahogany. The luxurious ship, which holds only 227 passengers, sails the southern Caribbean throughout the winter, while spending summers in the Mediterranean. Once underway—we sail the Grenadines Islands route, which runs from Barbados to the Grenadines, Grenada, Tobago Cays, St. Vincent, Bequia, Martinique, St. Lucia and back to Barbados—Royal Clipper cuts effortlessly through the cerulean waters. Climbing out onto the “widow’s nest,” the hammock-like rope netting at the bowsprit of the ship, is a real rush (watch for dolphins playing in the fast-moving seas below), as is an equally exhilarating harnessed climb up one of the masts to a perch high in the sky. Carrying a cutlass in your mouth is not required for this one, but you’re sure to get that playingat-being-a-pirate feeling while ascending ever higher into the rigging. Happily, Royal Clipper cabins are much more comfortable than those that the Dread Pirate Roberts and his crew experienced, particularly if you choose one of the 14 deluxe suites that include a veranda and marble whirlpool. There are also plenty of public places to relax; taking in the sun by one of the small swimming pools on the top deck, hopping off the marine platform for a kayak adventure or SUP paddle, or just hanging out and sipping the “Cocktail of the Day” at the outdoor Tropical Bar, indoor Piano Bar or cozy library. There’s plenty of good food on board too, as talented chefs cater to your every need.

“Climbing out onto the ‘widow’s nest,’ the hammock-like rope netting at the bowsprit of the ship, is a real rush (watch for dolphins playing in the fast-moving seas below).”

Naturally, this being a cruise, action abounds as the ship arrives at various islands. Some places, like the first stop at Union Island in the Grenadines, and later Tobago Cays, are simply (and wonderfully) pristine with quiet beaches offering sand, sun and warm clear water. Other anchorings put you in the vibrant heart of local cities, including Grenada’s St. George’s, Bequia’s pretty little Admiralty Bay and Martinique’s bustling Fort-de-France, all boasting brilliantly hued and cleverly painted buildings, shops, churches and outdoor markets. It’s easy to just wander and explore on your own any place the ship drops anchor, or to take an excursion offered by its concierge, whether to seek a guided historical perspective, or hike a volcano, zoom on a zip line, check out an incredible tropical garden or snorkel with sea turtles. Each island along the way has a different feel, with winter commonalities being beautiful azure skies, bathtub-warm turquoise waters and (unfortunately) some pretty mean mosquitoes. But when you’re at full sail on the Royal Clipper there’s nary a bug in range, as the warm wind whips through your hair and the sails are illuminated by tiny twinkling lights while the evening skies darken. Look west to see brilliantly hued sunsets sear across the sky; later, stand on the top deck and count myriad stars. Even if there isn’t a pirate who looks like Errol Flynn, ready to sweep you into his arms, it’s still a pretty magical experience taking a pirate ship to paradise.

If you go...

F

rom SoCal, fly into Miami a few days early to avoid catching a red-eye flight in order to make the only nonstop connection to Barbados, where the Royal Clipper always originates while in the Caribbean (itineraries from there include the A-B-C islands, Windward Islands and the Grenadines). We chose to visit Delray Beach and the pretty beachfront Delray Sands Resort. After spending a few relaxing days there before going on to Barbados, the transition to the Caribbean time zone was a breeze. Enjoy an extra day in Barbados, too, where you can take a fascinating tasting tour of Mt. Gay Rum Distillery (the first in the world) and see Hunte’s Gardens, a true tropical paradise filled with more cultivated flowers, plants and trees than you can imagine. And if you still want to connect via the Internet while cruising to the many different countries/islands, book an XCom Global International mobile hotspot before you go and pay a $15 per day flat rate for wireless service. It’s a steal of a deal that you carry with you; and up to 10 devices can happily surf the web wherever you roam. So pack your bags and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime as you sail off into the sunset on this pirate ship extraordinaire. It’s a grand experience; in fact, we’re already plotting a trip to the Mediterranean Sea next summer! baskmagazine.com

BEYOND

C

uba’s revered national hero, José Martí, a leader of the Cuban Independence Movement, and an esteemed poet and writer, once wrote, “To educate is to free.” Now that travel restrictions to visit Cuba have loosened, Americans are taking notice and learning more about the rich history and culture of this island nation. The one-time image of Cuba as a forbidden, restricted country has been replaced with a spotlight on its people, and their roots and warm embrace, freeing any preconceived notions. So the time to visit Cuba is now, before the flood of tourism changes the landscape too much. A perfect day in Havana, the country’s capital city, begins at the palatial Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Built in 1930, the hotel anchors the city with a sprawling view of Havana Harbor. The sea wall, better known as the malecón, stretches along the five miles of sea surrounding Havana. Upon entering the hotel, you are instantly transported back to Cuba’s golden age. The eclectic architecture (a blend of Art Deco, Moorish and Neo-Colonial elements), dark wood, amber lighting and tile floors are classically elegant and reflect an era paused in time. Graced by the presence of personalities like Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner and Ernest Hemingway, Hotel Nacional was the place to be during Havana’s halcyon days. Walk through the lobby and exit into the gardens, which provide the best place to take in your first experience in Havana. The house musicians hold court near the bar, taking requests from guests lounging around tables. The vibrant lyrics from groups like the Buena Vista Social Club seem to roll off their tongues and will lull you into a state of traveler’s bliss as you sit in the warm sun, smelling the mint wafting through the air, while bartenders muddle mojito after mojito, an art form in itself. From a distance, the Cuban flag waves in the breeze as classic American cars cruise along the coast. Linger in this idyllic setting for a couple drinks, then enlist a Coco taxi to deliver you to the entrance of La Habana Vieja, or Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll aimlessly through the narrow streets here, ignoring the desire to reference a guidebook or map. The beauty of Old Havana is in its details—the grandiose architecture in ruins; layers upon layers of paint that coat crumbling walls housing years of history and culture; and the people who reside in the homes overlooking the cobblestoned streets, hanging their laundry overhead as you pass by. Take your time exploring the nooks and crannies, stopping for fresh coconut water (straight from the source), or sliced pineapple. Seize the moment and join kids playing soccer in the streets, letting the universal language of laughter communicate for you. Cubans are curious about tourists; where you come from, what you know about their country and what compelled you to visit. Their inquiries are genuine, so take advantage of the opportunity to get to know them and learn about their lives, while sharing insight into yours as well.

One of the most personal ways to get to know the locals is to have dinner with them. Paladares are privately owned restaurants in people’s homes, and an intimate way to get a firsthand glance at how many Cubans earn their living. Not to mention a delicious home cooked meal. La Guarida is one of the most well-known paladares—and for good reason. It is located in an iconic building, made famous in the movie Fresa y Chocolate, and is chock-full of character. At the top of a spiraling staircase, past lines of hanging laundry, you emerge at the door of this cozy restaurant. Locals and tourists alike mingle in multiple dining rooms with bright yellow walls covered in framed pictures, highlighted by eccentric statues and décor. Before and after dinner drinks can be

had on the swanky rooftop bar, El Mirador, which recently opened to accommodate the uptick in tourism. The 360-degree views of Havana will captivate you for hours as you sip Havana Club rum and coke. As day turns to night, the rhythm of the city comes to life. Jazz clubs like La Zorra y El Cuervo host sultry performances in an underground tavern. Hotel Nacional is home to the Cabaret Parisien, which offers Cubano Cubano nightly. The show, a fusion of Indo American, Hispanic and African cultures that eventually evolved into Cuban culture, starts at 10 p.m. and, by midnight, has guests on the dance floor learning to salsa. After you’ve warmed up your dancing shoes, head to the popular Casa de la Musica in the Miramar neighborhood. While Cuban rum flows freely, find yourself swiveling your hips amid a sea of salsa dancers into the wee hours of morning. And finally, no visit to Havana is complete without a late-night drink on the malecón, where throngs of Cubans gather along the sea to stay cool, toast friends and listen to live music against the backdrop of crashing waves. As a great Cuban proverb states, “A love that can last forever takes but a second to come about.” If the world’s love affair with Cuba in the days of old is any indication of what it can be again, a new generation of American travelers will set foot in Havana and easily fall for its vibrant culture, soulful cuisine and beautiful ruins upon first glance. t’s hard to imagine, given its storied retail shops, five-star dining and movie star abodes, that less than a century ago, Beverly Hills was rural farmland. Today, the name implies much more than mere place; it conjures up a lifestyle of luxury and privilege. It’s no coincidence that the tony town’s sister city is Cannes, France; after all, the siblings evoke a timeless glamor synonymous with first-class beauty and quality—classifications that also describe Beverly Hills’ best properties. Within this exclusive subset, 813 North Alpine Drive shines. Located just south of Sunset, the home, with its red tile roof and elegant porticos, takes its cues from Mediterranean architecture, combining facets of its vernacular into a unique and harmonious expression of grandeur. Set back from the street, the home’s magnanimous proportions exude strength; at night, the house glows, regal and majestic against the setting sun. Abundant plantings enhance its air of timeless sophistication. The home’s entrance hall magnifies the suggestion of quiet elegance, which the richly oiled double wooden doors that permit entry embody. A double staircase and soaring ceilings set the stage for gracious living. Light pours in through the front balcony’s 88

windows. A crystal chandelier sparkles overhead. Confirming the home’s grand first impression is a glance at the magnificently executed details apparent here: decorative moldings, a sweeping, wood-topped filigreed wrought-iron banister and highly polished marble floors. These stone surfaces give way to intricately laid burnished wood flooring that sweeps throughout the house. Matched with coffered ceilings, crown and panel moldings, chair rails, skirting board and carved fireplaces, they layer the home with richness and depth. This backdrop imbues every interaction with charm and hospitality. From the dignified dining room and the opulent living room, with their Venetian plaster walls and contrasting moldings, to the gravitas of the wood-paneled study and the intimate media room featuring pickled oak trim and a granite bar, the interplay of materials helps to create spaces that subtly support the varied moods of a busy modern life that can run the gamut, often in the same day, from a boisterous after-school playdate to an elegant business dinner. Even the kitchen, outfitted with Miele appliances, a Wolf range and a Sub-Zero refrigerator, is stamped with elegance. A first-class chef and his team would certainly be at home here, finding in the French oak cabinets, Italian marble countertops, limestone floor and barrel vaulted ceiling a workshop for making an art of preparing the simplest or most elaborate of meals.

pstairs, private spaces amplify the expression of a life well-lived. This is especially apparent in the master bedroom suite, which impeccably balances grandeur with intimacy. An intricately carved fireplace and a private sitting room support romantic evenings à deux, while the luxurious layout of the master bathroom accommodates the reality of busy mornings. A generous shower stall connects the room’s two sides, one with a deep soaking tub. Cabinetmaker drawers finished with brass hardware, marble countertops and immaculately appointed dual walkin closets bring to mind the singular pleasures of a five-star hotel. In fact, all of the upstairs bedroom suites, with details including sumptuous tiles, capacious closets and graceful built-ins, echo the opulence introduced here. Downstairs, on the lowest level, accessed by a gracefully winding set of stairs or an elevator that services the home’s three floors, are amenities that further elevate the home to a level commensurate with its location in Beverly Hills. There is a temperature-controlled wine cellar with an adjoining tasting room that offers ample space for the discerning collector, a health and wellness suite including gym, steam room, sauna and indoor Jacuzzi, media room, and a six-car garage.

The region’s temperate climate paves the way for indooroutdoor living, with the home’s outdoor space inviting entertaining in style. Planted along the perimeter of the property, lush greenery cocoons the backyard in privacy, forming the scenery to a dramatic trellised clamshell pool and hot tub. The addition of fountains, waterfalls and an intricate mosaic along one wall ensure that it serves as more than just a utilitarian spot for swimming or a cooling dip, but as the dramatic centerpiece for an exterior destined to be shared. Conceived with the same attention to layout as the rest of the house, this expansive outdoor space includes a bar area and barbecue, the focal point for summer afternoons; an outdoor fireplace, the ideal spot from which to enjoy Los Angeles’ cool evenings; and, a long covered patio that beckons to be used for languorous dinner parties and lazy weekend brunches. People wonder about the stories that walls would tell if they could talk. Here, it would be a mesmerizing tale where life is but a dream and everyone lives happily ever after.

REAL ESTATE How did you get started in real estate, and what drives you today? In 2000, my first job was with a private homebuilder in Santa Monica, where I managed data entry and pricing for options that were offered to new homebuyers. Very quickly, I learned that a degree in business and a social personality were attractive to larger Orange County homebuilders who could not hire people quick enough because the market was going up, up, up. In 2002, I started with K. Hovnanian Homes, where I was educated and promoted to director of the Design Gallery for the Southern California Division. Once the market crashed, I did some soul searching and took a chance in sales. I worked as operations manager alongside Melinda Pakzad at EBANISTA, because it was local and still associated with sales and home design, while also studying for my brokers license in residential real estate. In 2011, I passed my test and very quickly hung my license with the best in the business, Surterre Properties in Corona del Mar. What distinguishes Surterre Properties from its competitors—and you as a broker? That is simple. We only hire and partner with the best in the industry. Everyone has a proven track record, and our sales records prove that time and again on the MLS and via client testimonials. I’d say more than 80 percent of my individual business is from my personal database and/or repeat clientele. I feel so fortunate to live and sell in this beautiful seaside community, and I make sure all of my clients know they are the most important part of the transaction. Every time! I feel Surterre does the same. We are a hyper-local boutique firm, but fierce with our branding, emphasizing being the best in the business with integrity, because it matters. That is the only way we know how to operate… period!

also how to focus on my game and not worry too much about what everyone else is trying to do. I love what I do, and therefore study it. I am super nerdy about numbers and trends, so I watch and analyze them over and over. Just like when I played volleyball in college. Each week I studied my opposite hitter, the plays she ran, the arm she hit with, the holes in the block she left open, etc. Watching game film and studying was a must, and not everyone did it, but those who did knocked it out of the park, and I think that translates to real estate as well. What are the essentials to look for when buying property in Southern California? That depends on the market, my clients’ needs and their budget. It’s hard to answer because some clients only want building opportunities, so I have to focus on location, trends in the neighborhood, build

Explain the advantage of having worked with a Fortune 500 homebuilder like K. Hovanian Homes as it pertains to your role as a broker. It helped me understand process and structure. Everything had to be outlined and followed. You can’t operate like that 100 percent in resale because there is always some gray, it’s not always black and white—we are problem solvers so creativity is part of the gig—however, the structure and foundation makes a fantastic building block for success as a broker associate for sure. What did working with Scott Cross of SC Homes teach you? Scott Cross is a person I admire and respect tremendously. His family and integrity are always the most important factor in his decisions, no matter what, and I respect that more than anything. Scott has personally taught me a lot about the actual process of building. I studied the construction process while at K. Hov and received a degree in Light Construction and Development Management from UCI, but actually seeing a footing being placed into the earth is a whole lot different than reading about it and/or looking at it after foundations have been poured. Everyone at SC Homes is like family to me. We all eat, breath and sleep the process of homebuilding, buying and selling, so being a part of their roundtable discussions and number-crunching for a proforma has simply been invaluable.

“Everyone has a proven track record, and our sales records prove that time and again on the MLS and via client testimonials.”

Agent Profile - Perry

What makes you so passionate about selling luxury properties in Southern California—what makes the area desirable now? This is my home. My family has been in Southern California for three generations; my daughter is the fourth. It’s the people, the sunshine and our communities that appreciate the salty air. I think these attributes will always make our seaside communities desirable. How does your experience as a Division I volleyball player help you in the professional playing field? Mindset is everything. I think, in general, playing sports taught me how to play well with others, and

time, product type, design trends and projected sales price. In the case that you are selling to an end-user, schools, lot size or community amenities might be worth paying a premium for. Your best piece of advice for homebuyers looking to purchase in Orange County? Have fun, be present and a part of the process. We live in an amazing place with some of the most coveted beaches and esteemed entrepreneurs. Pick a neighborhood that fits your personality and let your broker/agent help make the dream come true. We do this every day and are passionate about it. Don’t sell yourself short and try to do it all on your own, because it is a stressful process to manage without a coach. I like to think of myself as coach, teacher, and educator; once my clients have all the information they feel will help them make an informative decision, they can depend on me and my team to close the deal—seamlessly.

What other teachers or experiences have been fundamental in your life? I would have to say my parents, each and every one of them, for a different reason. Mom: the most giving heart; Step-dad: sheer endurance and dedication for sticking with us from the time I was in kindergarten to now; Dad: for being the most creative and outgoing person I have ever met; and my husband Christopher Perry, who is the most supportive and calming personality I have in my life. What are your passions and preoccupations outside real estate? Design, architecture, the beach, my family, anything outside with friends and family… My friends and family are my happy place. I tend to surround myself with them as much as possible these days because I am raising a little person. Madison will be two and a half in March and when they say that it takes a village, that is not a joke. This working momma needs all the help she can get. baskmagazine.com

All was merry and bright at the Island Hotel, Newport Beach for the Women of Chapman’s 29th Annual Christmas at The Ritz holiday luncheon. The beloved tradition continued, in all its festive glory, as guests were ushered into a graceful champagne and martini cocktail reception featuring a quartet of Dickens carolers, a thrilling opportunity drawing and an informal fashion and jewelry presentation by Neiman Marcus, Fashion Island. Upon entering the ballroom, the gathering marveled at the magnificent space awash

in seasonal linens with gold and red beaded overlays from Youngsong Martin and Wildflower Linen. Adding to the magic, each table was adorned with an array of brightly-hued nutcrackers that seemed to come alive under the soft glow of shimmering votives while as the signature Christmas at The Ritz wreath towered over all. Guests were then treated to a delectable four-course lunch featuring the famous Ritz Egg topped with caviar—an exquisite finish to a most memorable afternoon.

NIGHT LIGHTS The nearly 400 guests who made their way up a lush purple carpet to Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ 42nd annual Candlelight Concert anticipated a glittering affair. Once inside, they were surprised and delighted with a stunning revival of one of the Center’s most beloved traditions, the coup de theatre “reveal” and dinner on Segerstrom Hall stage. A stunning performance by Grammy Award-winning, multiplatinum jazz star Diana Krall, followed by Billboard magazine-topping KC & the Sunshine Band, ushered in the evening’s program, as the towering red velvet curtain rose to expose a stage transformed into a

spectacular candlelit ballroom. In keeping with this year’s theme—All the World’s Stage—guests were taken on a whirlwind tour of three renowned cultural capitals—St. Petersburg, New York and Paris— through a series of transitioning screens displaying iconic landmarks, with each transition signaling the beginning of another sumptuous dinner course prepared by Patina Restaurant Group. The grand finale produced a spellbinding view of Segerstrom Hall, aglow with over 2,000 tea lights, striking awe in all. As always, the evening was a shining example of success.

FASHIONABLE FRIENDS The St. Regis Monarch Beach, Dana Point was brimming with benevolence as more than 600 finely-attired guests gathered in the hotel’s elegantly decorated ballroom for the Friends of CASA’s annual Holiday Luncheon and Fashion Show. Attendees sipped champagne while bidding on over 185 luxury auction packages during a refined cocktail reception, before taking their seats for the Alice + Olivia by Stacy Bendet fashion show, presented by Saks Fifth Avenue. The stunning runway show was a brilliant

presentation of the brand’s Spring 2016 collection, set in an urban-inspired desert scene to signify the muchanticipated return of daytime dress-up. Following the show, former foster youth and current Colorado CASA State Coordinator Lauren Mueller shared her heartfelt and emotional story, leaving not a dry eye in the room, as guests reflected on the evening’s true mission—helping mentor and advocate for children in the foster care system. For CASA, a worthy cause that’s always in season.

The stars were certainly out at Laguna Beach hotspot [seven-degrees] for Surterre Properties’ annual holiday party. In true Studio 54 fashion, the marvelous soiree—one full of entertainment and excitement— was all glitz and glam. Guests showed their best dance moves on the fabulously lit floor, while grooving to upbeat tunes from Solo Productions and D.J. Mark Moreno. Liza Minnelli (played by an amazing impersonator from Ron Rubin Events) even made an appearance, much to the delight and enjoyment of all those in attendance. Furthering the evening’s fun, art-inspired vibe was master body painting artist

Luciano Paesani, whose live demonstrations of his work provided hours of unbelievable entertainment. While the ladies chatted and admired the beautiful surrounds of [seven-degrees], the men were treated to a lounge featuring a display of vintage cars from Robert Escalante’s private collection, on display, along with a cigar bar provided by The Cigar Guys. As the evening came to a close and the music started to fade, guests slowly trickled out of the venue, remembering a spectacular soiree rivaling the notorious revelries of its legendary inspiration, Studio 54.

Neighborhood Chef Chef Alan Jackson and the Seasonal California Comfort Food that’s made him the toque of the town WRITTEN BY SUSAN IRBY PHOTOS COURTESY OF VANESSA STUMP

L

Tabel Lemon

os Angeles-born and -raised, Executive Chef Alan Jackson has brought his popular Lemonade restaurants to Orange County with locations in Fashion Island, Irvine and, most recently, Huntington Beach. He found success early on with Jackson’s and The Farm Beverly Hills, as well as his acclaimed catering company, Jackson Catering and Events, which has been the preferred caterer for the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. With 21 Lemonade locations throughout Southern California and expansions underway in San Francisco, Jackson and his wife Heidi opened their first outpost in 2008, after constantly asking, “What’s for dinner?” Here, chef Jackson answers a few questions. Who inspired your desire to cook? My grandmother. She was not a great cook, but food was center of the family. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be? A farmer! I’m a person who has to work with their hands. What is your favorite part about starting Lemonade? As we have grown, Lemonade has become a part of every neighborhood it is in. It’s a great feeling; with 21 locations, I never had any idea it would be this big.

One of the biggest complaints among Americans when it comes to cooking is that they don’t have time. What’s your advice? You don’t have to accomplish complicated dishes to make a satisfying meal. Simple food with arugula, olive oil, lemon and salt can be satisfying. What about your success at Lemonade could you bottle and sell to aspiring entrepreneurs? Don’t listen to too many people. Follow your very own vision. Lemonade is still growing. Where do you see it going? I see Lemonade as a national brand that will help people continue to eat healthy food on an affordable basis.

If you were on a desert island, what three things would you want with you? Assuming my wife, Heidi, is with me… an iPad with the world’s largest music selection, a fishing pole and a cruet with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

When you are not in the kitchen or immersed in food, what makes you happy? Being with my family. We have a ranch in Oregon. I spend a lot of time riding horses and working in my garden.

What is the essential element to any successful dish? Seasoning–don’t be scared to add salt; use kosher, it’s easier to not over salt, or fleur de sel.

What does health and wellness mean to you? Being able to eat well and feel fulfilled. Eating seasonal vegetables everyday as part of a lifestyle.

Looking Back

HIGH STAKES

An iconic race, an epic payout and many a prestigious mount— Santa Anita Park is still SoCal’s surest bet

F

ew places in Southern California lore are as storied as Santa Anita Park, the premier racetrack in Arcadia with as much pedigree as the champion thoroughbreds that have famously run its course—and the Hollywood honchos who marked its heyday. The original Santa Anita Park was built in 1907, bankrolled by Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin. Its replacement—a beauty backed by the San Gabriel Mountains with a grand Art Deco entrance—graced the scene in 1934, in the midst of the Great Depression, when the only thing to bet on was a blazingly quick steed (and the very real possibility that cheering it on would be Lana Turner or Cary Grant). Despite the nation’s sagging state, 1935 introduced the inaugural Santa Anita Handicap, and its then unheard of purse—a whopping $100,000. The “Hundred-Grander,” as it was called, stole headlines from racing’s East Coast establishment and beckoned bloodline runners out west. While the beloved Seabiscuit, in one of the fastest 10 furloughs ever run on American turf, took the title in 1940, subsequent years brought eventual Triple Crown winners Citation and Affirmed to the track.

130

baskmagazine.com

The Second World War caused a massive shift in activity at Santa Anita Park. Racing was suspended, stalls and stables were converted into shabby barracks and the once illustrious track took on a much darker tone, functioning first as an assembly center for forcibly displaced Japanese-Americans, then as an Army training center. Santa Anita Park went on to brighter days, hosting equestrian events at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and several Breeders’ World Cup Championships. She witnessed legendary jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. ride to victory a record seven times (in one day) and fellow racing immortal Bill Shoemaker saddle the last of his many mounts. In recent years, scenes from the 2002 movie Seabiscuit were filmed on-site at Santa Anita Park, which also witnessed Zenyatta became the first female to win the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic on her turf. And last year, still basking in the glow of his Triple Crown victory after a 37-year drought, the much-loved American Pharoah was trotted out to 28,000 admiring fans. A very good run, indeed.
