publisher’s note

I

am so proud of how our editorial team always seems to find that gem or diamond-in-the-rough for each issue—something truly inspiring that informs our readers of new ideas and possibilities.

As publisher, it’s always exciting each time a new issue of bask Magazine hits the stands; it’s like a birth in the family. Finally, I get the time to sit down, relax and read the newly produced edition from cover to cover. Whether it’s great new travel spots both at home and across the globe; fresh and innovative home interiors from a designer who everyone is excited to read about (this issue, bask interviews British designer Timothy Oulton); a new dining experience; or, my personal favorite, our Looking Back column, the issues, like this one, never cease to inspire. As I get older, I love to read the success stories of others who followed their passion in life. In this spirit, the issue’s aforementioned Looking Back column focuses on my favorite architect of all time, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Pub Note

I always love our fashion pages, of course, and all the people for the past five years who continue to work hard to produce them issue after issue. I am personally involved in the process and really enjoy the continued opportunity to collaborate one-on-one with all of our fabulous fashion advertisers. This issue, we’re excited to bring you fashions from Novecento Boutique, The Passionate Collector and Jeanni Champagne, all located right here in Newport Beach. (Be sure to visit each of their lovely boutiques, and tell them bask sent you!) I also want to thank our on-set crewmembers who toiled away behind the scenes in service of the shoot and extend more gratitude to our fabulously talented photographer, Tony Florez, and beauty expert Lois Kinsey, of Lois Kinsey Beauty. I’ve worked with both Tony and Lois on various fashion projects for well over 10 years now and I couldn’t ask for more talent than what they’ve brought to the fashion pages of bask, including those here. So, my friends, that about wraps up this issue. By the time bask arrives at your home, summer will be well upon us. I hope that you have great plans with your family and friends; enjoy all the fun in the sun and I’ll see you this fall. Until then…

range County is such a fabulous place to live or visit year-round, but especially so during summer; partly for its warm climes and crystalline waters, but overall for its energetic lifestyle. I never worry about how I’m going to keep visiting out-of-towners entertained. From hikes along the beach in Crystal Cove, to seeing famous Broadway shows at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, to dining and luxury boutique shopping at Fashion Island and South Coast Plaza—Orange County really is the crème de la crème.

Enjoy and have a marvelous summer!

Style Rebecca Taylor

by amy adams | bask style

BOHEMIAN

belle

Rebecca Taylor was born to be a designer. She may not have known it from the start, but happenstance and serendipity, combined with her natural talent for making beautiful clothes, propelled the native New Zealander into a career once burgeoning, now flourishing. Today, after years of creating and perfecting looks for every new season, Taylor is in the midst of preparing to launch her newest venture—a swimwear line created in collaboration with Giejo designer Gabby Sabharwal—this summer. Featuring versatile silhouettes inspired by Taylor’s signature leopard prints and the vintage fashions her mom donned during the 1970s, expect the tastemaker’s latest plunge to make a splash.

Here, REBECCA TAYLOR talks to bask.

Does she love your style? Oh, she loves it… and she’ll sit there and be like, “Oh, those pintucks look familiar.” She’s lovely. The last time I was out here, in LA, she came from New Zealand to meet me with my two sisters, and we just had a blast. And they love LA; they love coming to California… it’s so, la la land for them.

Style Rebecca Taylor

What is your driving creative force? Designing is my passion. This rhymes, but it’s my passion for fashion—I love clothing. What drives me is wanting to do it better every time… each season, to look at where we made wrong turns. I tend to focus too much on the negative, because I’m a perfectionist, wanting the next year to be better, but I think that really drives me forward. It’s all about the customer and doing what she wants. That’s why I love doing personal appearances, because you get to do one-on-one and talk to them, see what they need. Do you feel your style has transitioned much from when you first started designing? I think it’s gone through phases, but actually, at the moment, it’s very much quintessential to who I am as a designer, and what I’ve always loved to do… bohemian, slightly hippie, Victorian influences, mixed with casual.

So, do you design what you like to wear? I try to. My style is really “Tom Girl”… I really like a juxtaposition of feminine and masculine. How is your product unique? Feminine, modern, refined, cool... Rebecca Taylor is best known for providing the eternally evolving modern woman a collection to complement and refine her individual sense of style. Signatures include unconventional color combinations and prints, flattering cuts, unique embellishment and a high level of detail.

How has your New Zealand heritage impacted your work? Growing up in New Zealand… there’s no shops. Like, where I grew up in the 80s, you couldn’t go and buy a ski suit if you wanted to go skiing. You had to go to Australia… my mom would come back from there with things. She made many of our clothes and had a very hippie, bohemian, white-eyelet-type vibe, and so much of her influence is in my clothes for sure. People over there don’t need as much as we need here, and I love that about it.

Do some of your styles resonate with what your mom made? Definitely. For sure. Very, very influenced by my mother.

Who is the woman who wears your designs? She’s not afraid of being feminine. She’s usually really smart… oftentimes a professional. What are you working on now? We are launching a capsule collaboration with swimwear designer Giejo at the end of this month. This is the first time we will be launching swimwear and we are super excited about it. Just in time for summer… where will we find it? The capsule collection will be sold in LA at the Rebecca Taylor store on Robertson, or in Fashion Island.

And if you weren’t a designer, what would you be? I used to want to be a dolphin trainer, and then I grew up and realized that’s so wrong, because I saw The Cove and now am so anti-dolphin training. But I love marine biology… I love animals. I wanted to be a makeup artist, too. Who is your most influential mentor? My mom is huge; my dad, too. A lady I met when I was at a real crossroad in my life, Deb Cummings, who, when I was on unemployment, sort of picked me up to do a government run program to learn how to make patterns, like training in the workforce. … She was like, “Have you thought of going into fashion?” I had never really thought of that... but I had on all the clothes I had made. I was like, “Is that a real job?” So that was how you started? Yes, definitely. I owe everything to her, really. What advice would you give to your younger self ? I’d try to love myself a little bit more. I was so hard on myself physically about what I looked like when I was younger… and actually, I was pretty cute. And when you get older you think, I should’ve worn a short skirt, you know. You’re quite hard on yourself. To just be, and live in the minute... love yourself a little more. baskmagazine.com

By salvaging the past, British designer Timothy Oulton reimagines the present

Home Oulton

by jenn thornton | bask @ home

W

hen it comes to mining inspirations for his from-the-gut innovations—intersections of eras and objets with modern élan—designer Timothy Oulton looks to unlikely places. Whether it’s a ship porthole for a lighting fixture, English parquet flooring for handmade dining tables, or a 17thcentury character named Noble Savage for a soft leather he’s since christened Warrior, Oulton is not only a man of his time, but of all times—and all seasons too. “It’s always very eclectic,” says Oulton of his eponymous brand. His approach, however, is instinctual. It’s what led him to turn what was once a small antique shop into a global producer of handcrafted heirloom furniture that segues from casual living to urban glamor with elegant ease. Although it’s now fashionable to design from discards, turning history’s cast-offs into coveted home couture takes genuine talent—and in this endeavour Oulton has few equals. Ingenuity is his stock and trade.

Home Oulton

Here, in a conversation with bask, the design world maverick shares his interior motives.

Your work bridges time—what influences in your past made you a designer for today? Exposure to the antiques industry from an early age introduced me to beautiful design. I grew up in a Benedictine boarding school and can vividly remember the old leather chairs and antiques that filled the halls. When I left school at 18, I started working for my dad’s antiques business, and in 1990 took the helm of the company. I refocused on design, creating furniture that was vintage-inspired but imbued with a modern energy. My lifelong passion for craftsmanship, together with my dad’s military background and my own affection for British heritage, has had a profound effect on my work and continues to inspire me today. What prompted your decision to make the move from antiques store to furniture brand—that’s such a huge transition. I love antiques, but felt they

weren’t relevant for how people live their lives today. I wanted to make things that would be useful, not just nice to look at. Our pieces still remain true to the time-honored craftsmanship that was around 100 or more years ago, but they’re pieces you can actually use in your daily life. They have a history, a story to tell. I’m curious about this idea of story that threads so much of your work. Stories and history are very important to us; the process of bringing a design into being has to have some meaning. That’s often true for the materials we use as well as the design itself. We find it in an English distillery or the hull of a fishing junk. This wood is marked, scarred—all of that is still visible in the final piece. The patina that produces over time simply can’t be faked.

And how does your British heritage affect your style sensibilities? A lot of our pieces celebrate British heritage, from architecture to literature to iconic designs. My dad was a major in the British Army, so that’s had a huge affect on my work, especially the Aviator range and Spitfire finish, which is directly inspired by the British fighter planes that fought in World War II.

Although so many of your pieces nod to the past, what is your driving creative force at Timothy Oulton today? I always go with my instinct. It’s never about trends. We want to make unique and original pieces; pieces that we love. Our designs might not speak to everyone, but that’s fine. It’s not about the mass market. What is it about for you? For me, authenticity baskmagazine.com

43

is key. Every piece we make is handmade, using simple tools, because that’s what makes it individual. Those subtle differences in the wood grain, or the patina of the leather, gives each piece its own quirks and personality. How do you approach designing pieces with both past and present appeal? It’s about blending the ideas from the past with a modern sensibility to create something fresh and exciting. You can take a classic shape like the Chesterfield and reinvent it in cool, distressed denim, or create really old and worn looking leather, then put it on something with clean, sleek lines. The sense of eclecticism you’re widely celebrated for is, in fact, quite contemporary in feeling. We make vintage-inspired pieces that are reinvented with a daring, modern twist. They capture that warmth of environment and familiarity, but they’re also infused with this incredible energy, this idiosyncratic quality that sparks a conversation. It’s about making your home both a place to connect with people, and a launch pad for your next adventure.

Aesthetically, is that the intent? It’s to make pieces that looked lived in. I like to say we breathe old life into new pieces. For us, we see the “imperfections” in natural materials as perfections, whether it’s the weathering in 100-year-old wood or the natural scars in a quality leather hide. What material is your favorite to work with? I’m pretty obsessed with leather. We hand-pick all our hides from South America, then bring them back to the workshop, where we can create exactly the effect we’re looking for. Each hide is like a blank canvas; we do all sorts of things in the hand-finishing process that you’d probably think were crazy, but that’s what makes our leathers unique—it’s a very artistic process. Craftsmanship, quality, and authenticity—all are fundamental to Timothy Oulton. Can you expand? Handcraftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do, it’s the lifeblood of the brand. That’s why we use the old techniques; they’re tried and tested. Making things by hand means there is that attention to detail. You can achieve a finish that simply can’t be done by mechanization.

What we make is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. It’s bold and British and ballsy. Our customers are people who want that. They care about the authenticity of the things they use, and they value that quality of what we make. 44

Home Oulton Of all the pieces that you’ve produced, what most appeals to you? I have a great affection for our Drum collection, inspired by 19th century military drums that were used on the battlefield by the British Army. We’ve repurposed them into tables, lamps, shelving, and the craftsmanship that goes into them is just how the originals would have been made. Not everyone will love them, but that’s okay, for me, they’re an incredibly special piece that always makes me smile.

really great comfortable sofa. This is the heart of the room, the center of connection where you entertain family and friends; it’s where you laugh and cry, where ideas are sparked.

Describe your dream interiors. I’m very casual and relaxed, so I like open-plan interiors where I can host people, with lots of big leather sofas to lounge on. I’m also very big on lighting; my house is full of huge chandeliers. I think great interiors always encompass different textures and time periods. It’s those contrasts that give depth to a space.

“It’s always been about more than just furniture. We want to give people an experience.”

What’s new from Timothy Oulton this season? We’ve got lots of new pieces out this year. I’m really excited about a new leather finish called Vagabond that we’ve put on our Westminster sofa. It’s hand-distressed over and over and over again until it takes on this incredibly soft, almost burnished finish. My other favorite is the Glacier dining table, it’s like a bubbling volcanic eruption that’s been cooled and frozen in time. We hand make it by burning whole beams of wood and encasing them in crystal clear acrylic. It’s an incredibly dramatic effect.

When it comes to homewares, what element do you consider indispensable to a room? I think every living space has to start with a

We know what inspires your work, but what about your life? I see the creative process as a bit of a quest, a journey. You explore, discover and often end up finding inspiration down pretty unexpected avenues. We have leather finishes inspired by a pair of antique cowboy chaps, lighting inspired by vintage jewelry. You can often find me at flea markets picking out the most threadbare pieces. I see a shape, a material or some tiny detail that seems to irresistibly draw me in. TimothyOulton.com

BOUTIQUES | JEANNI CHAMPAGNE + BASK

Profile Jeanni Champagne

Owners Jeandre Braak and Annette van der Laan Through a chance of fate, South Africa-born Jeandre Braak and her mom, Annette van der Laan, successfully created a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. A blend of Jeandre’s life-long passion for clothing and Annette’s business-savvy skills, combined with a hand-selected assemblage of the finest fashions—local and international trends from well-known and up-and-coming designers—every consideration at Jeanni Champagne Boutique whispers Euro-American elegance. Here, Jeandre, owner and busy mom of two, shares the story with bask.

BOUTIQUES | JEANNI CHAMPAGNE + BASK

jeanni champagne boutique Tell us about Jeanni Champagne Boutique. How and when did the concept begin? Jeanni Champagne’s journey to its current state has been quite serendipitous. Originally from South Africa, we decided to move here almost a year to the day after the birth of my daughter in October 2012. My parents have been in the USA for many years and, as such, my husband and I came to visit a few times. We absolutely fell in love with America, and Orange County, California, and knew that this is where we wanted to raise our family. Champagne had been a landmark boutique in Newport Beach for over 30 years and presented the perfect opportunity, given my absolute life-long love of the fashion industry. We decided to take a leap of faith and took ownership in October 2013, when the original founder put it on the market… I started with small transitions, introducing new brands and putting my unique stamp on the business, but having a busy toddler, I quickly found juggling management of the boutique and family life challenging. Fortunately, I have a chartered accountant mother, Annette, with analytical and business skills close to none, so she now runs the financial and administrative side of the business.

What do you enjoy most about this business? When a stylist is able to put together the perfect outfit for a client; or to introduce her to a jeans brand that makes her love the way she looks in the mirror; or helping her find that special thing she’s been searching for, that’s what I love most.

What makes Jeanni Champagne Boutique so unique? Without a doubt the product mix. Whilst still described as ‘euro-chic,’ we carry styles ranging from casual, featuring printed maxi’s, comfortable sweats and staple denim, to more sophisticated, daring and glamorous date-night tops and dresses. We pride ourselves in catering to a diverse market and have not ‘boxed ourselves in’ when it comes to defining an age demographic. Does the store compliment your personal style? How so? Yes! My personal style is sophisticated yet understated and Europeaninfluenced, which contributes to the boutique’s uniqueness. I believe in the power of a classic, preferring to usually mix things up with a pop of color or quirky accessories.

“ Profile Jeanni Champagne …being a creative person, I knew to be totally happy I would have to do my own thing.

Has this always been a passion of yours? Absolutely. I’ve had a life-long passion for clothing and fashion, never mind being a self-professed shopping addict. When deciding on a career direction… I knew I wanted a business background without sacrificing my creative nature, and thus, as a marketing major at university, ended up graduating with a business bachelor’s degree. It was when I worked as retail manager of one of South Africa’s large fashion houses, that the fashion bug really bit me. But being a creative person, I knew to be totally happy I would have to do my own thing. Any memories that stand out from when you first started this venture? They say that nothing worthwhile ever comes easy, and it’s true. Buying a business that has been in operation for so long comes with advantages and disadvantages. I, however, felt that to be true to myself and my vision, I had to transition the boutique; needless to say, there was some resistance initially, but with the previous owner’s daughter, Danie, everything came together.

Describe the woman who shops at Jeanni Champagne Boutique. Diverse women shop our boutique, from the soccer mommy wanting comfortable yet cute outfits while running her daily errands, to the romantic searching for that perfect date-night top or dress, to the career professional looking for dressier work attire. As well as the outgoing socialite selecting that special, sexy yet elegant, party dress or statement outfit. What pieces can we expect to see this season? Summer is all about vibrant colors, floral and patterns in all different silhouettes, be it shirts, dresses or shorts. The boutique will have a broad selection of these available, including new swimwear from Ted Baker London, active and jeanswear from Italian brand Freddy, and one-of-a-kind cocktail dresses from Three Floor, all representing some of our more contemporary brands. Our stalemate brands such as Joseph Ribkoff, Alberto Makali and David Cline have showcased new season collections that we are very excited about.

When you’re not in the store, how do you spend your free time? I am very blessed with an amazing husband, a beautifully busy little girl and recently had a new bouncing baby boy. They keep things interesting to say the least.

novecento boutiques Tell us about Novecento Boutiques. How and when did their concepts begin? Melika and I opened Novecento Boutique in October 2004 with the goal of providing unique, luxury women’s fashion at a level of service not seen anywhere else. We continued that philosophy and partnered with our son, Bobby, and nephew, Freddy, to open Novecento Sports in December of 2012. Novecento Sports complements our boutique with unique active and lifestyle fashion and accessories for women. Together, we have created a one-stop shop for all your fashion needs. Has fashion always been a passion for you both? Absolutely! Fashion has always been a part of our life. All together, we have combined for over 50 years of fashion experience. It all starts with Melika and her passion for fashion. It also runs in our family, as we have stylists, designers and fashion experts. It’s a lifestyle we are proud to be a part of.

Any memories that stand out from when you first started these ventures? Being able to share our passion for what we do with family stands out the most. We opened Novecento Sports with a good understanding of our strengths and opportunities. We didn’t realize how rewarding and exciting it would be to work with family and we are fortunate to have such a strong team in place. We are extremely blessed and proud to do what we love together. What do you enjoy most about this business? The most rewarding aspects are the friendships and relationships we have built with our clients and community over the years. Our clients come from all over the world and are our utmost priority and no.1 asset. We can’t thank them enough for their loyalty and support.

Whether you’re dressing up, dressing down, hitting the town or running around, we have what you need to look and feel great!

Describe the woman who shops at Novecento Boutique. A woman who admires the latest trends in fashion, keeping in mind that comfort and quality are just as important. Women are powerful and are continuously on the run in today’s day and age. They want fashion pieces that are versatile and transitional to fulfill their daily needs. We strive to find unique, functional and transitional pieces that can easily be worn from day to night.

How do you select the pieces/brands you carry? The collections of emerging and established designers are hand chosen and offered in limited supply to keep every look special. We can also custom design and make fashion pieces, shoes and handbags tailored to your specific needs. Whether you are looking for a one-of-a-kind dress, a unique handbag or a comfortable high heel shoe to match an existing look, we are here to help you find that custom piece. In addition, we offer private showings of collections and personal styling customized to the individual.

Profile Novocento

What makes Novecento Boutiques so unique? We are a familyowned and -operated business and we make every effort to listen to our customers and their needs. Our clients tell us it’s the high level of service and experience we provide. We understand that each person is unique and we custom tailor services to meet those individual needs. You are sure to have the most enjoyable and unforgettable shopping experience at the Novecento Boutiques. We go above and beyond expectations and make every effort to over-deliver on service. After all, as clients are our no.1 asset, we strive to deliver impeccable service. Do the stores complement your personal style? How so? We believe in what we offer and often wear styles and pieces that we provide in store. We really have it all when it comes to fashion.

What styles/pieces can we expect to see this summer? Layering is everything! Fashion is all about mixing and matching your favorite pieces to differentiate yourself from everyone else. Expect tons of minimal prints and timeless neutrals. Black and white have proven to be classically strong, but this season many of our designers are taking a different approach to changing a classic look. Mesh detailing, fabric manipulation and color mixing are all trends you can expect to see this season in our stores.

What are your top-five style tips for summer? 1) Always keep light layering pieces handy. For those of you who don’t like showing your arms even in the summer, a light cardigan or shawl will keep you covered and comfortable. 2) Switch out your classic boring bra for one with some cute strap detailing or lace. Our bras this season not only serve as a bra, but also as a bathing suit and sports bra as well. Cute strap detailing just adds a little more style to all your basics. 3) Don’t wear anything to clingy to your body. Wearing loose and airy pieces like our oversized tops and dresses will definitely keep you feeling cool in this summer heat. 4) Comfort sandals are a must! It’s 2015 and shoes shouldn’t kill your feet. Our sandals are our best selling flats and are available in so many fun colors for this season! 5) Jewelry layering adds to every outfit. When it’s hot and you minimize the amount of clothes you wear, stack up on jewelry to create a bold statement.

Owner Susan Shieldkret With a degree in Pearls and a certificate in Jewelry Essentials from the Gemological Institute of America, it’s no wonder owner of The Passionate Collector, Susan Shieldkret, opened her very own jewelry and accessories boutique. From handmade jewelry and timepieces to umbrellas and handbags, this Newport Coast gem ensures one is singularly dressed to the nines. Here, Shieldkret shares with bask her passion behind the collection.

BOUTIQUES | THE PASSIONATE COLLECTOR + BASK

the passionate collector Tell me about The Passionate Collector. How and when did the concept begin? I’ve always been interested in jewelry and accessories since I was a kid. About 10 years ago, I started selling jewelry at local fundraisers. I enjoyed doing that and then started doing events at my house. The business grew from there.

Has this always been a passion of yours? Yes, I had an uncle who made me beautiful pieces when I was a kid. Back then, everything was solid gold and I got hooked on the beauty of the metals and stones. I always say that most women have a ‘genetic predisposition’ for beautiful things, and I believe it! What do you enjoy most about this business? I love the people— helping them discover the power of accessories in making a personal statement, as well as serving the client’s needs. We go out of our way for our customers and really want them to be happy with the design, quality and service we offer!

for unique accessories and wants to look like she does.

Does the store complement your personal style? How so? My style has definitely changed over the years; I am much more attuned to trends that work for the 30-plus woman. And I have to say that one of the best things about our eclectic style is that I get to model a wide range in my choice of jewelry and accessories. That’s definitely a fun perk!

Your staff seems incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about all the brands in the store… this must be a great place to work. Yes, they tell me that they love working here—I certainly hope they are sincere about that! Our goal is always to make people feel comfortable in our store, and know that they will get the service and advice they deserve. They also have to love fashion!

No matter what the price range, our customer knows that setting the styles—not following everyone else’s lead—is the way she wants to look.

How do you select the pieces/brands you carry? They have to wow us—be unique and stylish, really exceptional. Our pieces must be very well made and they have to be priced right so that they have inherent good value for our clients.

Profile Passionate Collector

I also truly love the staff I work with, most of whom are much younger than I am. I have learned so much from them and I’d also like to think I’ve mentored some of them along the way.

What makes The Passionate Collector so unique? Over the years, I’ve realized that the mission of The Passionate Collector is to empower women to look and feel vital and visible through their accessories and jewelry. Like it or not, when you walk into a room people get a sense of who you are based on your attire. Why not use that to your advantage? I am passionate about fighting against the invisibility of older women. Women should feel beautiful at any age.

Describe the woman who shops at The Passionate Collector. The Passionate Collector shopper is someone who appreciates great design, quality and value in handmade jewelry and accessories. No matter what the price range, our customer knows that setting the styles—not following everyone else’s lead—is the way she wants to look. The Passionate Collector [shopper] has a discerning eye

When you’re not in the store, how do you spend your free time? I love to travel when I can. When I have the opportunity to mellow out, go out to lunch and just sit, I love to do that. I really enjoy my time with friends, with my extended family, going to museums, the movies, reading, TED Talks, walking. And of course, when I can see my kids (almost 28 and 30), that’s a huge bonus that I always enjoy.

The book you could read a thousand times? Well, I certainly have read Goodnight Moon a thousand times! The last book I read that I truly adored was The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. Amazing book, and so beautifully written. Gold or silver? Both, for sure!

What are your five must-have accessories for summer? Lots of bangles, rings and earrings that make you feel like you are on vacation! A lightweight scarf for cooler nights. An amazing handbag that can go anywhere, from day to night. Open-toed shoes of all kinds. And a great pedicure!

DREAMS Beyond Santa Fe

Celebrating a rich ARTISTIC tradition—and galleries and museums GALORE—small-city Santa Fe has earned big-city stripes

by jenn thornton | bask beyond

photo: Chris Corrie

Beyond Santa Fe

Beyond Santa Fe One of the most striking ironies of Santa Fe is how a city so steeped in art is so completely lacking in artifice—its mood genuinely warm and exceedingly gracious. But Santa Fe is a place of paradoxes. Founded in 1609, America’s second oldest city switched hands many times on its way to statehood and today mingles Spanish, Mexican and Pueblo Indian influences with haute hippie bohemia. Architecturally, Santa Fe draws some of its high-profile status from low-profile adobes. And, as unlikely as it might seem, these mud-colored dwellings are somehow compatible with the city’s soaring world-class opera venue.

Not surprisingly, art and artists flock to painterly Santa Fe as if on pilgrimage, no doubt inspired by northern New Mexico’s rapturous landscape—ruddy-rich canyons, deep gorges, dramatic cave dwellings and mountains studded with brush. It’s what prompted legendary painter Georgia O’Keeffe—patron saint of the arts in these parts—to exile herself to New Mexico, which she reinterpreted in a succession of bold, significant works of American Modernism. Many of these prolific contributions are brought vividly to life at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. For more O’Keeffe, the 66

renowned repository also manages Ghost Ranch, where the artist had a parcel of land, and her Abiquiu Home & Studio. The latter is an especially interesting porthole into the creative process.

Another of Santa Fe’s sensory charms is Canyon Road, a microcosm of the art world in a dynamic half-mile of galleries and shops. Truly exceptional is the Morning Star Gallery, a gorgeously curated treasure trove of New Mexican relics alongside the finely crafted turquoise jewelry of today. The Railyard, meanwhile, nurtures more provocative fare. In addition to ultra-contemporary art and exhibition space, like SITE Santa Fe, this district stimulates a convivial spirit with a bustling farmers’ market and performances. For sheer cultural scope, Museum Hill features four distinctive museums. Of these, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture is a case study in curation that traces New Mexico tribal culture via the likes of pottery, textiles and musical instruments. Quirkier is the Museum of International Folk Art, a visual whirl with a wing dedicated to New Mexico Hispano craft.

Beyond Santa Fe

State of the Arts THE ART OF DINING Swimming in green chile sauce, zesty succulence is everywhere—including on the radar of the James Beard Foundation. For breakfast, Café Pasqual’s plates a seriously satiating wake-up call. (It’s not on the menu, but ask for chorizo and eggs—with a side of the pancakes.) Tia Sophia’s doles out fast-casual fare, including epic breakfast burritos. The BLT and strawberry shortcake at The Teahouse makes for a fresh and filling lunch. For evening cocktails, go to Geronimo, but have dinner at The Compound or The Shed.

Beyond Santa Fe

THE ART OF HOSPITALITY

Nearer to Santa Fe’s pulsating center, the Plaza, is the New Mexico Museum of Art, its works housed in a beautiful example of pueblo revival architecture, and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, where Institute of American Indian Arts’ alumni show their experimental work. The Plaza also makes shopping an art, with some of the loveliest—and priciest—finery in town. The turquoise confections alone incite envy of epic proportions.

It’s artsy outside Santa Fe, too. Take the High Road to Taos to see stunning New Mexico mesas and, once there, the amazing Taos Pueblo. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has stood for centuries, has its own village of vendors offering handcrafted goods just as gorgeous as what’s in Santa Fe, only at a song for what you’ll spend there. Taos also has a plaza, which the John Dunn Shops trumps with the likes of the Moby Dickens Bookshop, run by an exceedingly friendly West Texan, and La Tierra Mineral Gallery, purveyor of stone sculpture and jewelry. But no matter where one wanders, rest-assured, when it comes to the art of travel, all roads lead back to Santa Fe.

70

baskmagazine.com

For a quick walk to the Plaza—the Fairmont Heritage Place, El Corazon de Santa Fe, promises comforts of home, only those decorated with much more panache, flaunting kiva-style fireplaces, rich woods and sumptuous leather. In addition to the fully stocked kitchen is a spacious master bath with spa-like bathroom. As a residence with hotel services, it’s the perfect retreat at the end of a long day—or the middle for a rest. There’s a small but suitable fitness center, complimentary coffee and cookies, and an accessible and savvy concierge, too. Bonus: parking is never a problem.

THE ART OF WELLNESS Santa Fe’s spiritual side takes shape in age-old churches and modern meditation rooms. Upping the spa quotient is Japanese concept Ten Thousand Waves. Although you won’t find frills, the spa offers communal and private tubs, and technicians who really know what they’re doing. The deep massage is not for the faint of heart, but seriously effective, with foot treatments well worth the price—as are many of the items in the spa boutique, like luscious lotions and kimono-covered mementos.

CALL of

THE WILD

The journey of life begins in nature. It’s what called writer Henry David Thoreau to Walden Pond and naturalist John Muir to the High Sierras. And it’s the poetry and the mood of unexplored country that calls us to Mother Nature— and to the warmth of her calming embrace, season after season.

For the better part of a century Airstream has proved the adage that the longest way around is the shortest way home. The man who dreamed the light travel trailer into being envisioned it floating along with ease. That was in 1931, and in the years since, this ode to American life has become an iconic emblem of the open road. To so many others, though, it’s simply home—a rambling reminder of a golden age of road travel, when the whole family caravanned to quieter country for a summer of lakeside fun. Airstream.com

Villa Torrebella AN EXQUISITE HOME IN SHADY CANYON CALLS UPON THE BEAUTY AND GRANDEUR OF OLD-WORLD EUROPE FOR ITS BESPOKE DESIGN

raverse the pristine streets of Shady Canyon, with its lush landscaping and ample walking trails, to an exclusive gated community of custom homes. Travel a bit further, and a palatial estate with a glowing façade of Verona marble immediately arrests the senses, bringing one back to the luxurious and grand days of Old-World Europe.

entryway is treated with embossed paper with gold and silver leaf and stud detail, while a grand chandelier catches the ample sunlight and Italian limestone corbels, made by the homeowners in their factory, accent the walls. The main fixture of the foyer is a massive 18th century tapestry overlooking the room.

The fruit of this “labor of love” becomes even more apparent as one enters the serene courtyard, first through custom-wrought iron gates, then teak gates. Once there, a rushing marble fountain with a meticulously planned star pattern—all the stars connect perfectly— at its base draws the eye. Past the courtyard, a single arched door of solid mahogany with custom ironwork marks the entrance. A spacious, bright foyer forms a pleasant greeting. Overhead, the

Walk through the butler’s pantry to reach the formal dining room. Here, a temperature-controlled wine cellar backlit by onyx forms the back wall of the dining area. Above the table, a dazzling chandelier crafted with hand-blown glass from Murano (a small island near Venice famous for its glass) stands as the focal point, while little arched alcoves inset with Italian limestone shelves give the space an added depth. Adjacent to the dining

Exquisite marble on the home’s façade is a consistent fixture throughout, and a point of pride for the homeowners—of course it would be, given that they also own Venetian Stone Works in Irvine. Every fixture in the home radiates authenticity and meticulous attention to detail, from the marble—specifically, red Verona marble imported straight from Italy—to custom ironwork to handpicked furnishings. “This house was a labor of love,” expresses the homeowner. “We were dying to do a house.”

Step out of the foyer and down the hall into an expansive, ornate kitchen—a true culinary haven fit for even the master chefs of Italy. Here, antique terra cotta in a herringbone pattern adorns the high ceiling, while granite from Brazil and limestone from Belgium form the perfectly polished countertops. Top-of-the-line amenities like a Viking 6-burner stove with Italian marble on the backsplash, custom walnut cabinets and a built-in refrigerator, as well as a butler’s pantry enclosed by antique doors from India, create the perfect blend of Old-World comfort and modern sensibility.

Just off the courtyard, a secluded spa area fitted with Moroccan tile, a cascading fountain and a gorgeously glassed spa create a quiet, secluded space.

room stand lustrous columns made from pure marble, consistent with the owners’ commitment to creating a completely authentic home. “I wanted to build everything like it would have been done two centuries ago,” tells one owner.

A cozy living room is found just off of the dining room. A true testament to genuineness, the space has a high, peaked ceiling supported by hand-hewn solid wood beams with intricate Spanish and Venetian detailing in a barrel vault curvature.

Only a short distance from the living room is the palatial master suite. Here, wooden Hollywood doors keep the room cool, a spacious his and her walk-in closet provides ample space for dressing or storing, and a grand master bath fitted with Spanish and African marble and a large steam shower makes for a one-of-a-kind pampering experience. Neatly tucked away outside the master bedroom is a fullsize laundry room.

Copper Creek

Follow the limestone road upstairs to reach the three additional bedrooms, each with their own private bathroom featuring exquisite stone and marble detailing created by the homeowner. Also on this floor is a custom billiards room. Leather flooring with rosewood and walnut detail, used to muffle the sounds of balls hitting the floor, and a bar with counters made from Pakistani marble offer a contemporary take on the classic game room.

From the second floor, a tower, which also doubles as an office, is accessible via a private balcony and walkway. Inside the tower, a high ceiling made from Italian glass with gold leaf mimics the night sky. Take a flight of stairs down from the office and reach the spa and sauna, designed so guests can have access without having to walk through the main house. Here, Moroccan tile surrounding the gorgeously glassed spa and cascading fountain provides a secluded haven. From this area, one can access the backyard. In true Italian tradition, a rustic pizza oven adorns the patio and fire tables built by the owner warm the entire loggia. The yard itself holds a graceful statue of a lady that was hand-carved in Italy and a giant fountain imported from India. A retaining wall lined with lime, clementine, grapefruit and lemon trees surrounded by a trellis growing clusters of grapes completes the vision of this grand European escape.

(above) A classic, rustic space, the expansive kitchen features exquisite detailing such as terra cotta ceilings, imported granite and limestone countertops and a quaint butler’s pantry, while capturing more modern sensibilities with a state-of-the-art Viking 6-burner stove, custom cabinetry and a built-in refrigerator. M

aison de Provence A SPRAWLING PLOT OF LAND IN LAGUNA BEACH BECOMES AN IDYLLIC HOME WITH MASS APPEAL

written by Amy Adams presented by Shala Emdadi & Mark Ravanpak, Surterre Properties

Temple Hills

L

eisurely wind up Temple Hills in Laguna Beach, a seemingly quaint and pleasant road checkered with a unique and varied assemblage of homes—a signature theme often seen throughout town—and at the top of the hill, reach an inconspicuous, rustic two-door wooden gate delicately accentuated by vibrant florals and naturally softened by a figurative frame of trees that add a bit of whimsy overhead. One has graciously reached the grand residence of Masion de Provence.

Inside the gate, down a long, private drive— significant enough to easily accommodate 15 vehicles—sits an expansive estate on nearly one acre of land. At first glance, the scale of the property surprises: it’s a vast structure, one designed for virtually every room to capture breathtaking ocean views, while its whole is nestled among lush vineyards (nearly 400 Chardonnay and Cabernet trees) and an abundance of other fruit trees, including pomegranate, mulberry and citrus. For the sake of efficiency, the property, set on a slope, recycles all landscape water: runoff captured by the pipe system is transported to a 400-gallon tank; from there it is pumped back to the surrounding scenery, ensuring no water is wasted.

Temple Hills

One wouldn’t know it by just looking at the property, but prepping the terrain for its building was quite a laborious undertaking. Suitably constructing the ground for a dwelling of this stature required that its homeowners take the mountain down nearly 60 feet, re-compact it, shore it and drain it properly to avoid future landslides. Now, the foundation contains over 170 caissons averaging near 50 to 60 feet deep and 3 feet wide, providing the house with a strong base of solid support.

Once inside, the eye immediately gravitates towards the soaring ceiling and considerable custom windows, some accented in wrought iron, accommodating a great deal of natural light and even more so, an expansive Pacific panorama focal point. Each of the five bedrooms located on the entry level have a bathroom and walk-in closet; one is an opulent guest suite with it’s own dining area, kitchen, laundry room and private entry access—the ultimate living arrangement for any long-term guest.

Temple Hills

Upstairs, the ample three-car garage boasts added windows for more light; 220-volt chargers for electric cars and a secluded office space accompanied by courtyard, mountain and ocean views.

From the entry, saunter downstairs to the living room, two additional bedrooms and the kitchen. The kitchen space, lavishly awash in Carrera marble, offers a two-door, 32” refrigerator and freezer, plus an eightburner Viking stove, coupled with an adjacent wet bar, a barbecue area off the adjoining living space, a game room, an ultramodern theater, and a 1500-bottle, controlled temperature wine cellar nearby. With these features, the area is fitted for an endless array of entertainment options. Along with LED lighting in every room, a Niles audio system featuring 175-watt speakers, is a presence throughout the house, while its temperature is controlled by reversible Mitsubishi heat pumps.

In the living area, pocket doors open and neatly disappear, giving way to an intimate patio overlooking the crystalline sea, a splendid pool and nearly 12 acres of lush, luxuriant open land. A few steps down from here, near the edgeless infinity pool, find a cozy built-in lounge area with fixed umbrellas offering shade on sunny days, ideal for sunbathing or watching kids frolic in the water. While the north, south and east sides of the pool are edgeless, the side facing west discreetly cascades over the edge in a magnificent waterfall effect. As day turns to night and the glorious California sun sets, a 3-foot firepit casts a unique “wall of fire” reflection on the pool, while warming all who surround it—a temple of serenity, you might say.

A serene backdrop of lush vineyards and succulent fruit trees, along with breathtaking ocean vistas and city lights, create the perfect scene for the Maison de Provence...

The Island Hotel filled with cheers and applause as Bruce Rollinson took to the stage at the Orange County Sportsman of the Year Banquet. As this year’s honoree, Rollinson, head football coach of the Mater dei Monarchs, made history as the first high-school coach to be honored by the committee. As guests ravished a sumptuous meal, Master of Ceremonies Tom Johnson ushered in the evening’s famous Roast and Toast, with each light-hearted roast followed by an equally heartfelt toast praising Rollinson for his instrumental impact on Mater dei’s football program. As the festivities drew to a close, guests were reminded of Rollinson’s biggest inspiration—and the evening’s purpose—giving youth sports participants a sporting chance by helping them pursue their athletic dreams. Transporting guests back to the captivating world of the late 1960s, JDRF’s Dream Gala “Join the Revolution” delivered, as always, an elegant and exciting evening. True to form, the 350 attending guests mixed and mingled while enjoying signature mod-themed cocktails during a chic reception at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach. Meanwhile, Laguna Hills residents Dr. Larry Silverberg and Dr. Nancy Silverberg, as well as Torrance-based Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc., were honored for their devotion to JDRF’s mission to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. As a delightful close to a most perfect evening, guests reveled in lively auctions, raising $800,000 for diabetes research. All was vintage JDRF.

the children’s hour A cloudless April evening greeted guests as they stepped from their vehicles to the palatial entranceway of The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel for CASA’s Annual “Celebration of Children” Black & White Ball. CASA, also celebrating its 30th anniversary, hosted a truly lavish affair, executing every detail with absolute elegance. Treated to a chic cocktail reception, some 435 attendees sipped fine bubbly while perusing the stunning items on offer for the silent auction. A sumptuous meal and reception followed, with former NFL quarterback Paul McDonald kicking off the festivities as master of ceremonies, and keynote speaker—Philadelphia

Eagles’ quarterback Mark Sanchez—delivering a moving address. Providing more inspiration were the evening’s honorees, including “Children’s Champion” award recipients Jennifer and Anton Segestrom; “Outstanding Corporation” South Coast Plaza; and “Advocate of the Year” Joy Winger. While the speeches inspired, the live auction and opportunity drawing thrilled with their abundance of one-of-a-kind goods and experiences up for grab. The excitement continued on late into the night at the after-party, where guests swayed away to the beats of Young MC and DJ Miles. Once again, CASA proved it knows how to have a ball.

The 250 guests in attendance were treated to an elegant red-carpet reception worthy of the Academy Awards, where they sipped exquisite champagne and noshed on delectable hors d’oeuvres to the sounds of the Evan Stone Trio. Upon entering the gorgeous gala space, guests were greeted by Lbaa Chairman and emcee, Jonathan Burke, who gave the evening its lively start. Delivering the keynote address, award-

winning actor Joe Mantegna expressed his love and appreciation for Laguna Beach’s art community in a most inspiring speech. Other luminaries included Delyer Anderson, winner of the $5,000 [sevendegrees] of inspiration grant for her proposal “The Film We Made/The Book I Didn’t Need to Write,” and Carol Reynolds, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement in the Arts award. The occasion ended on a high note, as guests danced to the tunes of musical duo Rocky’s Revival under the clear night sky. The stars truly do shine brighter in Laguna.

Adding a touch of whimsy to Newport Dune’s stunning vistas, the CHOC Glass Slipper Guild’s 21st Annual Gala, “A Night in the Bohemian Garden,” delivered pure class. Following a lively cocktail reception, guests made their way to a luxuriously appointed tent for the evening’s program. Gala Presidents Natalie Barberi and Anna-Marie Claassen gave heartfelt thanks and recognition to CHOC doctors, the Foundation and its beloved patients, while the event’s patient honorees shared touching stories of their experience with CHOC Children’s. Fittingly, the evening culminated with its own happily ever after—in this case, a Casinothemed after-party at the Back Bay Bistro.

For bask Magazine’s annual Spring Soiree, [sevendegrees] in Laguna Beach was positively abloom. First, with a lovely outdoor cocktail reception for 75 of bask’s closest clients and friends, who mixed and mingled amid elegant décor. Guests then made their way to the graciously-appointed ballroom, where they were treated to a splendid sit-down meal prepared by chef Steve Covern. The fun continued well into the evening with a stunning musical performance by American Idol contestant Adam Lasher and modeled fashion accessories by The Passionate Collector. Ushering in an evening of absolute elegance, a flock of the finely attired made their way to the Fairmont Hotel in Newport Beach for the Guilds of the Center’s Annual Spring Celebration “A Night of Discovery,” benefitting the Center’s educational programs. The event saw 290 guests delight in signature sips from a chic martini bar while participating in an alfresco silent auction during a lavish cocktail hour. As the stars began to sparkle overhead, the soiree made its way into the thoroughly refined ballroom, where a sumptuously

prepared meal of international cuisine satiated the crowd. Co-Chairs Sandy Bass and Marjorie Gorum introduced the evening’s program, with Center alumni sharing how discwovering the arts impacted their lives. Later, longtime member and former guilds chariman, Gail Daniels, was honored with the Guilds’ Inspiration Award in a most touching reception. Big Fish An ocean-loving chef brings modern, sustainable seafood to Newport Beach

photo: courtesy of FYI/Say It To My Face!

Chef Andrew Gruel, the CEO/founder of Slapfish Restaurant, has long been an advocate of sustainable seafood. Even prior to opening the resto’s forerunner, Slapfish gourmet food truck, Gruel worked as the director of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s “Seafood for the Future” program. Today, he continues to spread the word through his fast-casual eateries, including a recently opened outlet in Newport Beach.

baskmagazine.com

You started franchising Slapfish in 2013, with an additional eye on getting into airports. Can you elaborate on your expansion plans for the brand. The plan is to expand throughout Southern California by opening corporate stores, and expand nationally through strategic franchise partners. Airports are a great way to create awareness for the brand and teach people nationally about sustainable seafood. In the past you’ve stated that you want to make seafood sexy again. Is this still your approach? Yes! Seafood is traditionally so boring, relegated to white tablecloths or fried-fish “things.” In reality, seafood is all about the ocean. It’s sexy and fresh and can be really fun when presented properly.

What’s your favorite item on the Slapfish menu? I love the chowder fries because it’s real, made-from-scratch comfort food. On a regular basis, I eat the simply grilled fish with our organic salad. It’s simple, healthy and crave-worthy. You’ve appeared on multiple Food Network shows, including Food Truck Face Off. Tell us about your new TV gig. I am currently the host of a new show that premiered on May 9, called Say It To My Face! FYI’s new original series, Say It To My Face! gives chefs and restaurant owners a chance to redeem themselves before their toughest online critics. What’s one ingredient that is always in your kitchen? Sherry vinegar. It gives everything the required “pop.”

Taliesin West

Frank Lloyd Wright’s ode to organic architecture is a true desert oasis

In the pantheon of Frank Lloyd Wright’s illustrious labors, Taliesin West is one of his most significant architectural reactions to the natural world and outgrowth it inspired—“organic architecture.”

Emerging in 1937, Taliesin West—so christened to pair with Wright’s Wisconsin residence Taliesin—is the current headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. In its earlier life, however, it was Wright’s roost out west, a place he designed after purchasing some 800 acres at the foot of the McDowell Mountains north east of Scottsdale, Arizona, miles from any other development. Motivating Wright’s design—one harmonious with nature—was the site’s “poetic potential,” offers Sidney K. Robinson, AIA, Emeritus Professor of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. Wright’s “respect and sympathy” for the land in turn produced the low-profile, environmentally aware build—one warmed by a flood natural light and materials.

“But what makes Taliesin West so amazing, is the architectural response to the exotic landscape by a born-and-bred Midwesterner,” continues Robinson of the forms, materials, details, texture, and colors of the desert that all fueled Wright’s fascination with the site. In this way, he adds, Taliesin West is a “powerful, creative reconstitution of the sources he drew upon.”

Wright wintered at Taliesin West from 1938 until his death in 1959 at age 91 to “renew and rebuild,” notes Robinson, pegging the architect as a “perpetual spring of creative energy” and a “life-force” easily and enthusiastically rapt of pattern and color. But renewal as it relates to “perception and attitude.” Here, one of America’s foremost individualists came to view the familiar in a new way. Then, as it is now, “Taliesin West is a place to stimulate life, not entomb it,” Robinson explains. “[It’s] a powerful example of Frank Lloyd Wright showing us how life is lived in the world right in front of us.” FrankLloydWright.org Taliesin West and architect Frank Lloyd Wright out west 138
