The 2013 Winter issue of bask Magazine is both an ode to holiday planning and weddings. As intended, it captures the essence of the holiday season—a time to spend with friends and loved ones, catch up on some much needed shopping, and reflect on the past year. As publisher, I have much to be thankful for this year—bask has just celebrated its three-year anniversary as a quarterly publication and we have introduced some fabulous features to the magazine, including its new luxury size and format. In the spirit of keeping things fresh, bask staged its first-ever photo shoot at Orange County Museum of Art for this issue. Incredible and unlike anything we have ever done previously, the experience was truly unique, with OCMA’s inspiring artwork serving as an ideal foil for the shoot’s overall theme as well as the fashions, hair, and makeup. It was also a tremendous pleasure collaborating with OCMA—all involved were so organized and knowledgeable about providing the perfect works to feature for our shoot. It was, as they say, truly a work of art.

Celebrating the season’s many charms continues with travel, style, and design features. Our holiday planning guides have everything you need—chic home gifts to personalized treasures and beyond—for a stress-free shopping experience, while our travel pages whisk you off to beautiful Europe to explore the rolling hills of the Irish countryside and the historic sites of Italy. Closer to home, we discover the heritage-rich Washington School House Hotel in snowy Park City, Utah. And, with our must-wear winter fashion coverage— think sophisticated outfits, classic jewelry and must-have travel accessories— you’ll be jetting off in prime style.

1 Jenn Thornton writer For Jennifer Thornton, staying at the Washington School House Hotel both created and evoked fond memories. “The small-town feel surrounding the hotel is absolutely one of its charms,” she says. “And because I come from a long line of educators— my great-grandmother taught in a one-room schoolhouse and my grandmother was a principal with a 1950s Smith-Corona typewriter I just loved in her office—I formed a quick attachment to the place based on childhood memories.” The Washington School House Hotel tops Jennifer’s winter hideaway destinations, but she also loves Alberta, Canada, and the High Sierras. 2 Virginia Fay writer Virginia Fay experienced the true essence of Ireland by traveling the backroads of its countryside by car. She describes the journey she took with her family in vivid detail, from the Emerald Isle’s verdant, rolling hills to some of her favorite sites, including the breathtaking Dingle and Loop Head Cliffs. “My family instilled a love of travel in me at an early age, so I feel extremely lucky to still be able to take vacations with both my parents and my brother,” Virginia reveals. Virginia’s favorite tomes to read while in transit: classics like A Farewell to Arms by Hemmingway; some light reads, and anything associated with the destination.

3 Robert Palmer writer Robert Palmer details his life-changing journey through Italy—from the history-steeped streets of Rome to the scenic beauty of Tuscany. “Few, if any, countries have such a long and rich history of art, culture, and, frankly, great cuisine,” he says. “From the simple, color-washed portside villas of Portofino, to the museums of Florence, including the Uffuzi and the Galleria dell’Accademia—the museum featuring Michelangelo’s masterpiece ‘David’—to the treasures of Vatican City and its galleries and churches, Italy is a visually stunning, heritage-rich land.” As for Italian wines to try, Robert recommends Barolos, a dry, full-bodied and complex red wine; Barbarescos, a lighter blend; and, from Toscana, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. 4 Debbie Lavdas writer In this issue, Debbie Lavdas shares how Peinture has become a favorite find of DIY artists, allowing them to create flawless works of art at home using Chalk Paint. “I recently painted a 101-year-old piano that was handed down to us,” she shares. “To everyone’s surprise, I painted over the very traditional brown piece in Emperor’s Silk, a bright, pure red with vibrant accents of turquoise and vibrant green. It breathes creativity now and inspires, which feels exactly right.” For unique finds, Debbie names SoCo for its progressive nature, C. Wonder for its modern touch, and Cucina Enoteca, for quirky goods as her top locales.

5 John Watkins photographer In this issue’s photo shoot, John Watkins brings his own unique vision and style to the art featured at OCMA, capturing the true essence of both the works and the model to create a timeless spread of art, fashion, and culture. “I wanted to shoot the layout in a way that paid tribute to all the amazing art, from the actual art pieces to the wardrobe, to the model talent, to the makeup, to the art direction and to my own skills a photographer,” he says. When it comes time to retreat, John’s top spots are Baja CaliforniaMexico, Jalama State Beach, The Hollister Ranch, Laguna Beach, and Joshua Tree in the Twenty-nine Palms area. 6 Jenny Peters writer Jenny Peters discovered the rich history and natural beauty of Galicia, Spain, while on a journey to find the region’s top wellness spas for relaxation and rejuvenation. “I loved the spa at the Hotel A Quinta de Agua in Santiago de Compostela,” she says, “because the water features were like nothing I had ever seen before, all designed by owner and architect Luisa Lorenzo.” Among Jenny’s top can’t-live-without travel accessories are the Baby G Digital World-Time Watch from Casio, a comfortable jacket with zippered pockets to store essentials and, for international travelers from America, the Global Entry card.

CASTING OFF IN MEXICO Punta Mita

Love is a journey. For Jillian and Joe Faron—high school sweethearts-turned husband and wife—their love took them from Illinois to California, and finally, to the sunny beaches of Mexico for the big day of their dreams. Here, bask Magazine shares an exclusive look at their destination wedding on the remote shores of Punta Mita, Mexico.

Many people don’t, or try not to, remember high school math. But for Jillian and Joe, who met in math class during their sophomore year of high school, it’s something neither will ever forget. One day after a lesson, Jillian asked if anyone knew how to burn a CD and Joe offered to help—for a mere fee of $5. After a few weeks, the pair, who began talking more and more, became almost inseparable. And the rest, they say, is history. After 12 years of dating, Jillian and Joe were finally ready to tie the knot. But before moving from Illinois to California, Joe thought the best way to start their new adventure was to propose, so he took Jillian to the music venue where they had their first date and popped the question—she, of course, said yes.

When the couple first saw The Four Seasons Resort at Punta Mita, they immediately knew it was the perfect spot for their destination wedding. The resort and surrounding area, with its white-sand beaches and secluded location seemed almost made for Jillian and Joe, who wanted a laid-back wedding with the beauty of the Pacific Ocean in the background. The wedding—a small, intimate event with just 34 total guests—spanned over four days on the resort’s private Manzanilla beach. The two families were truly able to become one as they shared in Jillian and Joe’s happiness with lunches, golfing (for the guys), pool time (for the girls), an all-day sailing trip and, naturally, the actual ceremony. The day of the wedding was nothing short of a dream, with cloudless blue skies overlooking the ivory shore where Jillian and Joe would unite as husband and wife. Jillian, in a gorgeous beach gown, walked down an aisle covered with rose petals to the sounds of a guitarist

in the glow strumming “I’m Yours,” lending and island feel to the ceremony; the whole scene—complete with breathtaking Manzanilla trees, crystal-clear water and waves crashing in the background— brought out the most loving emotions as the couple took their vows. “It was just really perfect, I wouldn’t have changed a thing,” says Jillian, reflecting on the ceremony.

The couple’s family and friends enjoyed all the beauty that Punta Mita had to offer as they gazed at the serene ocean from whitelined tables surrounded by bouquets of blue and white roses. As the night wore on, the newlyweds swayed to the beat of Old 97’s “Question” for their first dance and cut the sumptuous coconut and vanilla cake—but only after almost knocking it over on their first try. There was no shortage of laughter, either, as some Mexican favorites—a piñata, a wooden donkey, and tequila—were incorporated into the evening’s festivities. The night truly seemed endless as the newlyweds talked, danced and enjoyed every moment with family and friends under the glow of Japanese lanterns and decorative stars, all while ocean waves gently beat against rock formations in the distance, making for a truly magical evening.

Jillian and Joe are now happily settled in California with the newest addition to their family, a long-haired Chihuahua named “Mita”—after Punta Mita, of course.

PRECIOUS MEMORIES The couple chose to have a “sandceremony,” where everyone took turns pouring tan and blue sand into a heart-shaped container, representing the blending of both families. OCEAN, INSPIRED The couple assigned each of the five tables at their reception different marine symbols. S’MORE THAN PERFECT Everyone gathered around a beach bonfire at the end of the night to roast marshmallows and savor the last moments of an unforgettable day. FLOWER GARDEN There was no shortage of flowers at Jillian and Joe’s wedding with blue and white roses found everywhere, adding a lush, garden feel to the tropical setting. 34

WEDDING INN-VITATION Rancho Santa Fe

Planning a wedding is challenging, but even more so when attempting the undertaking across the country from its venue. For Lettye and Owen Walsh, however, orchestrating their San Diego nuptials from Chicago was a breeze with the help of their supportive friends and family. Here, an inside look at their charming, classic wedding.

Having first met at Miami University in Ohio during their senior year of college, Lettye and Owen dated longdistance for some years after graduation until reuniting in Chicago. And though the couple still resides in the Windy City, it was the bride’s hometown of San Diego that would greatly influence their wedding. After all, it was in San Diego, along the quiet beach shores of Powerhouse Park in Del Mar, that Owen proposed to Lettye—both an intimate and family affair, with Lettye’s parents throwing the newly engaged couple a cocktail party at the L’Auberge hotel later that evening, and Owen’s parents, along with his older brother and his wife, arriving for the celebration. And, when Lettye and Owen first laid eyes on the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, it was clear San Diego would also be the spot for their wedding. Instantly drawn to the Inn’s breathtaking scenery and old-school California charm, “I just knew immediately that the natural beauty, the setting, the look, the feel, the bricks, the flower garden, and the twinkling lights was just everything we wanted,” remembers Lettye of its appeal. The only difficulty was distance and, though at times proving overwhelming planning a San Diego-based big day from Chicago, Lettye was still able to achieve her dream wedding.

The fateful day brought together all the elements of her original vision, with the Inn’s unbelievable beauty complementing the classic look and feel of the wedding. Donning dresses of navy silk chiffon, bridesmaids posed for pictures among the property’s flower gardens, while clad in navy blazers with white dress shirts and khaki pants, groomsmen admired views of the ocean. But it was Lettye, stealing the show in a sweeping, elegant gown by Augusta Jones, who gave the whole wedding its sense of timelessness.

Catholicism also played an important role, with the ceremony held near the Inn at the Church of the Nativity, complete with a bagpiper, as an ode to the couple’s heritage. The ceremony itself was emotional, as the bride’s eyes filled with tears as she walked down the aisle on her father’s arm and to Owen to exchange vows. “It was filled with lots of emotion, love and happiness, and I think everyone said it was one of their favorite ceremonies, which was really nice,” recalls Lettye. As the evening wore on, guests danced and laughed amid twinkling lights surrounding the Inn, and enjoyed late-night tacos provided by SOHO. At the end of the night, the now newlyweds shared their first dance to the Rolling Stones’ Keys To Your Love, gazing at one another while looking forward to their new life ahead.

VINTAGE FLAIR The bride’s father made all table number holders using old wine corks he collects. FLOWER GARDEN The bride chose heavy white flowers with elements of greenery to accentuate the Inn’s natural beauty and the wedding’s classic vibe. SWEET TREAT San Diego bakery VG’s created the simple white cake, adorned with fresh flowers, and featuring Bavarian cream and fresh strawberries. LOVELY LIGHTS Softly glowing lanterns and candles added extra sparkle to the already picturesque venue, giving the evening a truly magical feel.

From the outset, the couple knew they wanted to have an outdoor ceremony with nature surrounding them. They immediately fell in love with Carmel Valley Ranch and its hiking trails, miles of lush vineyards, and abundance of oak trees, so much so that they decided to plan the ceremony around it. “I decided I wanted to do something that reflected the beautiful landscape of Carmel Valley Ranch and the fact that there were so many green trees around, especially oak trees, and the mountains in the background,” explained Karen regarding her inspiration for the wedding theme. The wedding décor featured natural colors like soft browns and greens with pops of blush, peach, and rose that worked in perfect harmony with the surroundings. With close friends and family surrounding them, the sun filtering through the trees, and the serene setting of Carmel Valley in the background, the wedding ceremony seemed like a dream. Karen, looking flawless in an elegant white chiffon dress, was led down the aisle by her father while the man she would soon call her husband waited at the altar. 40

The brilliant April sky stood cloudless over the miles of vineyards and lavender fields surrounding Carmel Valley Ranch as Karen and Ramsey prepared to say “I do.” Nature had always played an important role in the couple’s life and was an ever-present feature in their wedding, from the proposal to the ceremony. Ramsey had originally planned to propose to Karen amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Marin Headlands during a morning hike before leaving for Napa to celebrate Karen’s birthday. However, Karen had to work that morning so they held off on the hiking trip and headed straight to Napa Valley. By the time they reached their hotel later that day, time was running short for Ramsey to propose. Before leaving for dinner, Ramsey asked Karen if she wanted her birthday gift. After giving her a new camera, he surprised her with another gift—a marriage proposal in the quaint setting of their hotel room. And of course, she said yes.

The couple exchanged their own written vows during the deeply personal ceremony. Tears started to glisten in Karen’s eyes and her voice began to crack as she read her vows, gazing at Ramsey the whole time. “It was a really wonderful moment,” recalled Karen of the vows. During the reception, the bride and groom honored their family and friends with framed thank you cards sitting on each table. “Both our family and friends have helped us grow and develop into who we are, so it was really important for us to recognize that,” explained Karen. After the cake was cut, Karen and Ramsey stepped onto the floor for their first dance as husband and wife. The words of “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison filled the room as the couple swept across the floor in perfect harmony. The day was picturesque in many ways with the breathtaking scenery of Carmel Valley in the background of the quiet, beautiful ceremony. However, the true wonder came in the couple’s perfect happiness at the prospect of spending their lives together.

A DRESS TO REMEMBER For an outdoor wedding, Karen wanted an elegant, form fitting dress with a vintage feel. Her gown was custom designed by Jinza Jin Couture Bridal in San Francisco. SOMETHING SWEET The four-tiered chocolate mousse cake covered with ivory fondant and gold accents was custom designed by Marina Sousa at Just Cake, with detailing that matched the bride’s wedding dress. FROM THE GARDEN The flower arrangements, prepared by Sarah Hackforth and Jennifer Zukovsky at Fionna Floral, gave the reception a romantic, botanical feel with softly colored flowers that reflected the elegant and polished look of the wedding. WELCOME TO OUR WEDDING Guests received welcome bags filled with caramel corn, lavender sachets, pocket wine books, and sunhats to reflect the Carmel Valley location.

Precisely Piaget Legendary Piaget winds up for more extravagant excitement with the launch of several new timepieces.

S

ensually Swiss since 1874, when a young Georges-Edouard Piaget founded the destined mechanical movement at just age 19, the iconic company that bears his name has passionately dared to pair style and technical prowess like no other.

A record setter for ultra-thin movements, virtuoso with precious materials, and launcher of the jewelry watch concept, Piaget has drawn equal adoration from the likes of fashion idol Jackie Kennedy to pop-art icon Andy Warhol. And, as the watch to wear among the jet set, Piaget often makes the scene at polo matches for its sporty elegance, and has even dazzled with a $6 million timepiece donning more than 84 carats of sheer brilliance.

Equally sparkling is the new Piaget Polo FortyFive collection, offering six timepieces. Men will undoubtedly appreciate the relaxed line, which exudes the storied chic of the Piaget Polo watch, with styles including brown alligator skin bands with a rose-gold case set with 42 brilliant-cut diamonds. Ladylike counterparts in the new Piaget Polo Ladies 38 mm collection, meanwhile, juxtapose precious materials with a leather strap. Among the fashions featured are those cased in 18K white gold (or rose-gold) set with 50 brilliant-cut diamonds and dialed in 18K white gold set with 386 brilliant-cut diamonds. Finally, this year, the Piaget Rose collection, which recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Yves Piaget Rose, also seduces with feminine Piaget Rose pieces. A Piaget Rose ring nods to the most emblematic Piaget jewelry motif, with hand-carved domed petals and two diamonds showcased by a subtle example of gem-setting. Additionally, Piaget Rose earrings pair two pink opals and two white pearls with 18K white gold set with six brilliant-cut diamonds. Clearly, jewels rule this winter. To indulge your Piaget desires, visit the Piaget Boutique at South Coast Plaza, at Neiman Marcus in Newport Beach, and at various L.A. locations. Piaget.com

Just one hour in Park City, Utah and already I’ve shaken

hands with three locals who, when its revealed that I’m bunking at the historic Washington School House Hotel, all give a familiar nod—and, in the case of the kindly octogenarian I encounter out front, an actual tour of the place. While regaling me with tales of his life in Park City—its various incarnations including both a boomtown and a ghost town—he bounds inside rather robustly for a man of his age, swiftly pointing out his likeness in one of the black and white classroom photos gracing the walls (presumably for proof ), then his very first classroom (coincidentally, my suite). Everyone in Park City, it seems, has some kind of connection to the Washington School House Hotel, be it loose or legitimate. It does, after all, have quite a past— built in 1889, it’s served as everything from a war-years veteran’s hall to a crash pad for wayward hippies.

Today, its luster comes in part from its storied surroundings. Park City sits amid a montage of rambling fields, snow-dusted mountains, and sprawling backcountry— with prime access to the area’s vaunted assets, including world-class recreation and, thanks to a little undertaking called the Sundance Film Festival, significant culture. Situated near buzzy Main Street, the hotel is just minutes from Park City’s Town Lift, and mere steps away from the Kimball Art Center, shops, and restaurants, yet far removed, in both tone and translation, from the crowds. What the tiny in-town hotel lacks in the flashy expanse, it more than makes up for in uniqueness. Ritzy in all the right ways, the refurbished schoolhouse is sophisticatedly spare, featuring an elegant mix of antique furnishings with splashes of 56

baskmagazine.com

modern accents. Modified spaces give way to contemporary spoils, including a pool, mini apothecary, and a luxe lounge appointed with plush banquettes, a magnificent fireplace and, glistening overhead, a dramatic white-lacquered chandelier.

This tasteful interplay extends to all 12 of the hotel’s western-chic roosts, including my two-story lofted one-bedroom suite, which functions more as a quiet corner apartment. Downstairs, a chandelier dripping in melodrama lords over a setteappointed living area, complete with towering 9-foot windows and a spiral staircase. Upstairs, a separate open-loft sitting area features an inviting French daybed and a serene bedroom hosting a king-size bed draped in crisp-white Pratesi linens, made all the more brilliant by the contrasting rich hardwoord floors. A cascade of curtains, meanwhile, cocoons the space for sectioned-off slumber.

Elsewhere the situation is equally generous, with the staff clearly taking its cues from the at-your-every-whim service playbook. Always attending, yet never chaperoning, they hit just the right pitch, supplying insider dish on Park City and French press coffee around the clock (even, ahem, during the middle of the night, without raising an eyebrow). This discreet turndown also turns up original beside amenities—one night it’s a hardcover tome of Henry David Thoreau essays, and the next a gourmet twist on freshly baked s’mores. Breakfast, meanwhile, produces a surplus of fresh-off-thegriddle pancakes, satiating omelets, and mountain-ready muffins, while afternoons brings après-ski snacks—that are especially delightful enjoyed fireside after chilly day of exploring. Now that’s class! WashingtonSchoolHouseHotel.com

Trim Castle is offset by brightly hued flowers and bordered by a gently babbling river and greenery as far as the eye can see.

A land of rolling green hills and breathtaking seaside cliffs, where the drive may as well be the destination, Ireland is best explored by car, wandering backroads, and dallying in small towns. Add to this a splash of city life, and some rich history, and you have the makings of a perfect week in the Emerald Isle. baskmagazine.com

bask beyond | by virginia fay Greener than fiction’s Emerald City, Ireland in summer is a feast for the eyes. Although every corner of the country holds its own special charms, for a weeklong sojourn, there’s no better way to travel than a driving tour of the Republic of Ireland. But before venturing south, get a quick taste of Northern Ireland, and its very individual history, by first flying into Belfast for a night. A highlight of the city, one historically plagued by dissension between Catholics and Protestants, is its murals, many proclaiming political ideals and pleas for equality and liberty. A handy way to view them is via a taxi tour. Outfits like Harper Taxi Tours offer these convenient excursions, complete with an engaging history lesson delivered in a charming brogue. If not too invested in delving into the particulars of Belfast’s past, spending one night here is long enough before heading for greener pastures—literally. Driving through the countryside, whether by mountain or sea, reveals the true charm of Ireland, and an ooh-andah-worthy sight around every corner. From Belfast, head down to Dublin and spend a few days getting a feel for the country before meandering into the lesser-known nooks and crannies of the Republic. With myriad of options to explore, start with a relaxing dinner by the River Liffey, then take a postprandial stroll through the famous Temple Bar area—and, if you dare, brave the often-raucous throngs taking in the live music and enjoying a pint, or five.

The next morning, tour Kilmainham Gaol before heading into Dublin’s city center for a fascinating look at Irish history through the lens of the nowdefunct jail. Then, head to the heart of the city to swing by Trinity College for a student-led tour of the storied university, regaled with signature Irish wit and culminating at the Trinity Library, home of the famous Book of Kells and Long Room. Soak in the spirit of this literary lair while recalling that writing greats such as Oscar Wilde and Jonathan Swift once studied here. Next, grab a quick pub lunch on any corner before moving on to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for an Evensong service or tour (or, weather affording, a picnic on the green). If you have more time to spend in the city, other notable mentions include Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin Castle, and, of course, the Old Jameson Distillery or Guinness Storehouse. Once you’ve ventured into the countryside, ease into driving on the left side of the road by meandering through the Wicklow Mountains and relishing the views at every turn. Rolling green expanses covered in striking purple heather and dotted by wispy white fluffs of bog cotton will draw your eye, so take advantage of the many turnouts and venture into the landscape a bit, where you’ll likely happen upon even more entrancing vistas of tranquil lakes and babbling streams.

Once you reach Glendalough, take the tree-lined, hour-long stroll to both Lower and Upper Lakes, which are set against a stunning mountain backdrop. If the weather’s nice, you’ll even find bathers braving the water—bring a suit if you fancy a dip! There’s also the Monastic City, made up of the ruins of the famous early Christian monastic settlement first established by St. Kevin in the 6th century—an ideal spot for history enthusiasts. The town of Cahir is a pleasant place to rest for the night, and is just a couple hours down the road from Glendalough—if keen for more history and an imposing view surrounded by fields of sheep and cattle, stop at Rock of Cashel on the way. After resting up, head for the coast and a change of scenery in Dingle. A small coastal fishing town, Dingle is alive with traditional music and some of the friendliest folk you’re likely to encounter—and, driving along the Dingle Peninsula affords stunning sea views. Dramatic cliffs, tiny beach coves, and ancient rock structures characterize this coastal drive that, with sunlight lasting until 9 or 10 pm during the summer, will afford a magical sunset if you’re lucky. Dingle is also conveniently located near the Killarney National Park, where you can admire some imposing mountain scenes dotted with waterfalls big and small. Take a few hours to enjoy the winding roads of the Gap of Dunloe, where 60

baskmagazine.com

cascading waterfalls, placid lakes, and the tallest peak in Ireland are equally arresting, rain or shine. Aside from the surrounding scenery, be sure to spend at least a few hours getting to know Dingle itself. Follow the colorful storefronts that make up the town, try on some Irish wool sweaters at the Dingle Woolen Company, sample Dingle Sea Salt ice cream at Murphy’s, and pick up fresh fish and chips at Reel Dingle Fish to nosh on the harbor overlooking a picturesque view of brightly-hued fishing boats, vibrant green hills, and rippling blue waters. At night, the whole town seems to ring with music—drop in to any pub to hear live “trad” (traditional Irish) tunes—either vocal or instrumental and made up of anything from guitar to accordion—alongside locals and tourists alike. A couple favorites are John Benny’s Pub and O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub, each of which serve pints of iconic Guinness and Smithwick’s Pale Ale, as well as the Dingle craft brew Tom Crean’s—all worth a try. Of course, no trip to Ireland would be complete without seeing the incomparable Cliffs of Moher, but instead of heading straight there, detour to the Loop Head Cliffs first. Picnic alongside the cliffs amid a view you won’t soon forget, and take a peaceful stroll around the peninsula to admire the surrounds. If luck sends you a sunny day, you’ll be rewarded with vistas of deep-blue waters and startlingly green grass punctuated by bursts of yellow and purple flowers, and steep cliffs in all manor of formations. Whether greeted by sunshine or more typical Irish rain, it’s impossible to feel unwelcome in Ireland, as affability is its national trait. Have no fear of taking a wrong turn on your search for ever-more-beautiful towns and vistas, for as long as you don’t stray too far from civilization, there is always a friendly face to point you in the right direction—with a suggestion for a neighborhood pub to boot! The Long Room at Trinity College Library is a bookworm’s heaven, and marks the spot where illustrious authors such as Oscar Wilde and Jonathan Swift once studied.

It is said, “all roads lead to Rome. And, during the days of the Roman Empire, they did. Today, however, Rome is only an 11-hour, 6,000-mile flight from Los Angeles. And if you love to travel, hopefully the road that leads you to this historic city continues on to the many other regions of Italy worth visiting, too. The country is, after all, a magical place full of life, history, culture, and cuisine.

St. Peter’s Basilica

Amalfi Coast

On this journey, we start in Rome; sojourn to the northernmost regions of Lake Como; explore the southern landscape of Capri and the coast; wander the hills of Tuscany, and discover the floating city of Venice. Enjoy this brief impression of a wonderful land with a past that’s ever present.

ROME With 2.8 million residents, Rome is not only the capital of Italy, but also its largest metropolis. Nicknamed “The Eternal City,” it certainly is, having existed since 753 B.C., only to eventually be designated the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1871, and then of the Italian Republic in 1946. It is also the world’s 11th most visited city (the third in Europe, behind only Paris and London) and steeped in untold treasures, like Vatican City, which includes St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, with masterpieces from Raphael, Michelangelo, and Bernini. The city of Rome is also home to the Pantheon; the Forum; the Colosseum, and the Trevi fountain, all some of the most famous and beautiful sights on Earth. Indeed, few places recall such a long and storied past or boast so many breathtaking accomplishments of mankind. At the same time, the streets of Rome—for centuries the leading religious and political center of Western culture (magic it still retains today)—are littered with simple but scenic restaurants, vibrant shops, baroque nymphs, and amazing people. Almost any first trip to Italy should start in Rome, and last for at least a few enchanted days to experience all it offers. NORTHERN ITALY: LOMBARDY If seeking peace in the afterglow of villas, lakes, mountains, restaurants and history is on your agenda, then Italy’s northern Lombardy region is the place for you. Stretching from the border of the Swiss Alps to the lowlands of the Po Valley, the region is home to exquisite vistas amid a tranquil setting rarely seen. One of the most spectacular sights is Lake Como. Located just 30 miles from

Milan, it is that perfect, but rare, combination of scenic beauty enhanced by man. These magnificent surrounds have captivated travelers with enthralling villas, gardens and tiny communities, including the breathtaking Bellagio, for centuries. Villa Balbianello, one of Italy’s most famous villas and the former home of Guido Monzino, one of the country’s eminent explorers, is situated just across the lake from Bellagio and has been featured in films like Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones. PORTOFINO AND NEIGHBORS Meandering down the coast from Lake Como introduces a series of scenic coastal towns, starting with the storybook, much photographed and oft-painted village of Portofino, which stretches along a crescent-shaped edge of a calm bay. The Piazzetta is the meeting point for jet-setters and fishermen alike, situated alongside characteristic brightly-colored buildings dotting the bay. That said, unless you own a mega-luxury yacht, there is little to do in the small town other than briefly take in the sights, enjoy a meal bayside, or rent a small boat. As such, travel to the less famous but still lovely town of Santa Margherita, which is only a short trip away. Further south, there’s also Cinque Terre, or “Five Lands,” a quintet of small villages on stunning, rugged cliffs that overlook the Italian Rivera. Centuries old in its creation you can still hike and visit the sequence of manmade terraces on steep landscape and spectacular hillsides. The hike is semisadistic, but the view is beautiful.

NAPLES, SORRENTO, AND CAPRI Moving further down the western coast brings you to Naples, Sorrento and just off the coast, Capri. Naples, the third largest city in Italy, is the capital of the Campania region and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, dating back to the sixth century. Once described by Herbert Kubly as “a great amphitheatre around her beautiful bay,” Naples also has the dubious distinction of being the most bombed Italian city during World War II. More widely known, however, is the fact that Naples is credited as home to the beloved Neapolitan pizza. A few miles east of Naples lies Mount Vesuvius, best known for its volcanic eruption in 79 A.D., which also destroyed Pompeii, a semi-preserved town and architectural marvel not to miss; while, just south of Naples, Sorrento is a beautiful seaside outpost overlooking the Bay of Naples. The location serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the surrounding area, including taking the famous Amalfi Drive along the Amalfi Coast. Just an hour away by ferry is Capri, a small island off the Sorrentine Peninsula that has been a resort town since the days of the Roman Republic. From the beautiful small harbor, the town quickly rises to the peaks of the neighboring hills, where the ancient city still remains vibrant, lovely, and, during peak summer months, quite crowded. SICILY Further south, towards the toe of the boot of Italy, is an entirely different landscape, culture, and people. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is far more than a society that created the Cosa Nostra; it’s home to rugged, beautiful, and culturally intense people. From the fruits of the sea, to olive oil from the Gods and a virtual reverence for all things gastronomic, this island that time forgot holds culinary and cultural treasures rarely found in such isolated topography, including Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active on the planet, being its most prominent landmark. Humans first dwelled on the island as early as 8000 B.C., and over the years it has been ruled by Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Normans, and others. Among Sicily’s most stunning sites is the Greek-Roman Theater at Taormina, a popular tourist destination due to its remarkable preservation, panoramas, and priceless location. From lovely cobblestone streets, quaint shops, some of the world’s top-rated hotels, and churches pre-dating even your ancestors’ ancestors, mile after mile and view after view, Taromina and its surrounding coastal towns are among some of the most beautiful ancient addresses in all of Italy. TUSCANY If you love Napa, you’ll love Tuscany. With ancient towns, divine hillsides and fantastic wines, this enchanted area of approximately 9,000 square miles and 3.8 million residents is widely regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Florence is home to the beautiful Uffizi gallery, Pitti Palace, Michelango’s breathtaking “David,” the author Dante (of Divine Comedy fame), and thriving viticulture. A remarkable seven localities here—Florence, Siena, and the Cathedral of Pisa, home to the famous leaning tower, among them—are designated as World Heritage Sites. A short trip south from Florence is the aforementioned Sienna, a 900 B.C.created village still prospering to this day and most famous for its cuisine, art and the Pailio—a horse race between local villages held twice a year. VENICE Italy’s second most famous, and visited, city is Venice, or La Serenissima (“the most serene”). Different than any other place in the world, it is entirely built on water. Once the cultural capital of the Roman Empire, and a critical financial and political center, Venice reigned nearly supreme to its sister city, Rome, but today, unlike its sibling, Venice sits as a sinking island, albeit beautiful, with a dwindling population of local citizens and

Trevi Fountain an ever-growing number of cruise ships, at times numbering into the multithousands, with up to 12 or more “mega” ships descending on the town each day at the height of the summer season—the collective weight of which is, quite literally, helping to “sink” the entire city. Indeed, so severe is the crowding, that local citizens have recently taken to jumping into the shipping channels in an attempt to slow the pace of the crushing cruise-ship population. Today, Venice consists of 118 small islands located in the near swamp of the Venetian Lagoon, which are separated by canals and waterways and connected by a series of bridges. As the capital of the Veneto region, the city today lists barely 200,000 residents compared to its millions of visitors each year (an average of more than 50,000 per day) and is widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Tourists flock to the Grand Canal, the Piazza San Marco, and St. Mark’s Basilica. Its gondolas and Grand Canal are unique to the city and its architecture is nearly second to none.

celebrating three years In the spirit of the holiday season, Jolie Adams and bask Magazine kicked off the events calendar with a celebration honoring three years of ongoing partnerships and support from the individuals, influencers and industry that have made bask Magazine what it is today. After guests arrived at a private oceanfront estate—an Italianinspired villa for sale by Surterre Properties, to be precise—festooned with Ferraris and Maseratis complementing its grand aesthetic, statuesque models from Barbara Bui, South Coast Plaza, greeted them. Then, Chapter One’s executive

chef, Jason Montelibano, previewed a selection of delectable morsels from his current menu, which guests enjoyed while quenching themselves with a sampling of the restaurant’s signature cocktails along with Stella Artois. Throughout the evening, flash mob dance sequences from Chapman Universities’ award-winning dance team surprised partygoers who partied the night away to a live DJ set by Mark Moreno. But the crown jewel of the evening was the multitier anniversary cake prepared by Casey Reinhardt of Casey’s cupcakes—a sweet finish that satisfied all palates.

This year’s co-chairs, Lori Anderson and Julia Post, hosted the beautiful event, showcased at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Following the event’s Roederer champagne

an evening of diamonds It was a night to remember at Beckstrand Cancer Association’s celebrated Diamond & Pearl Ball, held October 5, at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. Marking the gala’s 10th anniversary was an intimate gathering of 300—the nonprofit’s most valued supporters. Guests mingled and enjoyed the view of the Pacific Ocean from the gala’s ballroom, awash in lustrous gold and silver. The affair also honored longtime Beckstrand supporters Mike and Jan Salta, who once again showed their kindness and generosity by bestowing the organization with a $500,000 gala gift. Later in the evening, presenting sponsor Lugano

Diamonds provided the piece de résistance for the live auction—its breathtaking 10.02-carat Ceylon sapphire with matching oval five-carat sapphires, sold to supporters Holly and David Wilson, for $125,000. The spirit of giving continued with a generous gift from an anonymous donor who offered to match the bid, allowing Lugano Diamonds to raise $250,000. The event, which also featured a heartfilled performance by Grammy Award-winning artist Alanis Morissette, raised $1.81 million for Beckstrand to help cancer patients and their families through difficult financial situations.

PAINT the Town

Many deem Deborah Waltz’s Peinture studio a stroke of genius. Brush up on her popular DIY locale. Pass by Deborah Waltz’s placid SoCo storefront and you may see just another paint store—or maybe, an upscale, pretty paint store. Stroll inside, however, and discover why the proprietress’ Peinture boutique is quickly becoming the go-to source for so many—and for so many reasons.

Waltz, an L.A. native and once stifled healthcare worker, stumbled across the brilliance of Chalk Paint® when she was looking for an easier way to paint furniture for her design clients. “It had only been in the states a short while when I discovered it,” she recalls. “After I received the paint, I was hooked! I knew I had to tell Orange County all about it.”

That she did, opening Peinture (French for painting) in January of 2013. The boutique’s one-of-a-kind accessories and nostalgic-furniture finds are divine— and the concept of what’s in the can is quite ingenious, too.

“With Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan, you don’t have to strip, sand or prime surfaces,” Waltz says. “People love that! It’s really amazing.” While the niche paint has been available in Europe for 20 years, it’s new to America, here just since 2010. And this Chalk Paint® is not to be confused with that cutesy playroom paint, either. This version is pricier, used for gorgeous art transformations and pretties everything from furniture and accessories to pianos and concrete. “It has no smell, dries fast, and is extremely versatile,” Waltz adds. “You can use it on wood, metal, laminate, previously painted surfaces, fabric…You can also dye natural fibers with the paint and water, and there are many different painting techniques you can achieve with it.”

Beyond offering the paint on a broad scale in her studio (as opposed to the back store corner in a few places in Malibu, Temecula, and San Clemente), Waltz created Peinture as a space for people to soak in inspiration and ontrend ideas. “I wanted it to be relaxed and not intimidating and to reflect how painting furniture can actually be fun and easy,” she shares. “I also hold painting workshops in-store to teach people all the artful possibilities and the beauty of gentle wear on older pieces. Dings, scuffs and imperfections tell a story. What others may see as flaws, we see as character at Peinture.” So stop in SoCo and see what all the Chalk Paint®—the talk of the town—is all about. Party Perfect

As many a hostess knows, the best way to plan a party is to think like a guest. Whether orchestrating a spectacularly simple luncheon or an elaborate seasonal soirée, preparation ensures success. Sometimes, to be an A-1 hostess, you need to hire one. So, if you’re overwhelmed by seasonal tasks, hiring an event company for all or some of your duties makes perfect party sense. SIGNATURE EDIBLES and other key elements, such as proper staffing, are instrumental in turning a mere event in to a magical and unsurpassed experience—thankfully, elaborate orchestration is the specialty of Cory Martin Events, an event planning outfit executing all aspects of party planning with posh aplomb (and a high-profile client list to prove it). CoryMartinEvents.com

TRANSFORMING EVENT DÉCOR such as elegant chair covers—or, more glamorously, an entire suite of fine table linens—add style and panache to at-home affairs. Enter Youngsong Martin, a nationally known fashion designer, who founded Wildflower Linens in 2001, now a preeminent linen rental company. With style and elegance, its creations have graced occasions big and small, from intimate functions aboard yachts, to the post-Oscars Governors Ball, to teas fit for royalty— in this case a bona fide HRH in Queen Elizabeth. Crowning glory, indeed. WildflowerLinens.com 130
