s I sat down to pen this note, one word kept coming to mind: time. So, I decided to research various thoughts on the subject and it was a quote from Coco Chanel—“There is no time for cut-and-dried monotony. There is time for work. And time for love. That leaves no other time”—that really struck a chord. It suddenly dawned on me that this Fall 2014 Issue marks the fourth anniversary of bask Magazine. “Can that really be; where did the time go?” I said to my partner and friend Paula Ansara-Wilhelm as we laughed and quickly re-capped how it all started. And, as the timing seems appropriate, I will share with you, our readers, a little bit of how bask came to be. Fittingly, it all started with a phone call from Paula, Co-Founder of Surterre Properties, which, by the way, just celebrated its 8th anniversary—talk about time flying! Now, Paula and I go way back (14 years to be exact), so little did I know that this call would be different from the usual, “Lets meet for lunch!” But, trusting my publishing skills and reputation in the community enough to share her vision, Paula presented to me the brilliant idea of launching a magazine together. “…It’s the right time, and it’s the right thing to do,” she said. I still remember sitting in her living room, the two of us brainstorming for a name and a profound tagline, like it was yesterday. Then, it came to us and bask Magazine, luxury in balance, was born.

publisher’s note

Of course, it wasn’t quite that easy. It was, however, a labor of love between two friends and a handful of very talented people. When our first issue launched in Fall 2010, many people were losing their homes, companies and jobs. So it was our mission to produce a magazine that not only made sense economically, but would also touch lives in a positive way. Today, bask is still passionate about its mission and purpose. Maintaining the integrity of the magazine and its quarterly content will always be our main goal. I especially want to give a big thank you to our Editor-in-Chief Amy Adams, as she works tirelessly with our writers and is always on the hunt for that wonderful diamond in the rough to share—keeping bask fresh, new and interesting each issue. I also want to thank everyone that works so hard behind the scenes to make the magazine so beautiful and engaging. Without their amazing efforts, and the ongoing support of our readers and advertisers, none of this would be possible. So, with this milestone, I can’t help but reflect on time passed with the upmost of gratitude. Enjoy the Fall 2014 Anniversary Issue!

s the days grow shorter and the cool summer breeze becomes more of a crisp chill in the air, it is undeniable: fall has begun. This, however, is no reason to fret, because although the long careless days of summer may be coming to a close, fall holds an abundance of promise for the open-minded—whether that means planning a getaway, entertaining friends or seeing a spectacular performance.

Still, as autumn approaches, I can’t help but reminisce about all of the spectacular gatherings and people that made this summer unforgettable. Take, for example, Oceana’s SeaChange Summer Party, a truly inspiring event that raises awareness about preserving the health of our oceans. It is by far one of my favorite evenings of summer because everyone relies on the ocean in some way. Whether near or far, its preservation is essential to all—the ocean is, after all, its own cycle of life.

Edit Note

And, just as everything must cycle and change, the page must turn from summer to fall. Of course, our fall fashion shoot helps make this transition a flawless one. Set on a gorgeous property in Trabuco Canyon, the old-world charm of this classic estate created a warm, inviting atmosphere that perfectly complements the deep, rich hues and thick, textured outerwear featured. Furthering our transition into fall, this edition spotlights every season essential—from Quill London’s time-honored paper traditions and Heath Ceramic’s handcrafted wares to a bespoke journey through the rolling hills and lush vineyards of Italy’s wine country. And, as I am a huge advocate of the arts, this issue also features the best of fall exhibits and performances, with special tribute paid to SCFTA’s Arts Education Program and its continued dedication to cultivating Orange County’s performing arts world. Fall will always be a favorite season of mine because, as this issue so beautifully highlights, it’s a time of change, transition and countless opportunities, so enjoy every moment of this new—and wonderful—season.

Some things need no introduction. Many know, for example, that Segerstrom Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s top cultural institutions, one presenting a staggering variety of related worldclass programming. Of these, is the internationally acclaimed Dance Series; top Broadway shows; intimate jazz and cabaret acts; classical music; family shows; indie bands; and contemporary theater troupes from across the globe. Amazingly, as the largest not-for-profit arts organization in Orange County, the Center is funded solely by private donations, corporate sponsorships, and ticket and rental income. With the 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall, the 2,000-seat Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the 500-seat multifunction Samueli Theater, the 250-seat Founders Hall, and the 46,000-square-foot Arts Plaza, the Center is, in all ways, a cultural juggernaut.

channels, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program and classes aimed at second language learners to share the beauty of the arts. ON STAGE AT THE CENTER brings school children to the Center’s venues to witness leading performances and stimulate a love of the arts.

SUMMER AT THE CENTER is a nationally recognized undertaking granting at-risk high school students the opportunity to learn various aspects of theater and, at the same time, helps build self-esteem by pushing them towards previously unreachable goals in an intense two-week song and dance program.

SIX DAYS OF BROADWAY teams top performers and teachers from the Great White Way to coach

INTERNSHIPS offer opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to gain professional experience by working handin-hand with the administrators, artists and technicians at the Center.

Of the broad assortment of programs offered via assembly-style presentations at schools, and on-site performances for younger audiences, the diversity of performers—and performances—is staggering. Included among these ranks are Gaelic Irish music and dance displays; Aman dance educators presenting native folk dances; hip-hop shows; indigenous South American musicians; “Baba the Storyteller” and his world-renowned Kora stories of African culture; Moscow Nights featuring Russian song and dance; the BOXTALES Theatre Company and its exquisite masks, music and storytelling; Rogue Artists Ensemble’s creative use of puppetry, multi-media and music to create imaginationstirring visual programs; the Italian Street Painters; Melanie Van Latum and her celebrated oil painting; and visual arts residencies.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ outreach efforts give Orange County an arts education.

Few know, however, the extent of the Center’s community outreach efforts. Its arts education program—one of the largest of its kind in the nation—affects more than 375,000 students, teachers and families annually. But given that education programs were actually part of the Center even prior to its opening, with some events modeled after the Kennedy Center’s Imagination Celebration, the venue continues to make the grade while also making a universal impact.

After all, “The arts matter to each of us for personal and communal reasons since they provide us a common language that speaks to people across the globe,” notes the Center’s Vice President of Education and Community, Talena Mara. Hence, the sheer scope of the Center’s outreach and educational arm—much of its programming, as diverse as anything it stages, involves a close alliance with boards of education, school districts and local universities. From this cultural array emerge the Center’s major programs, including:

ARTS TEACH offers a roster of more than 75 professional artists, representing the realms of music, dance, theater and visual arts to schools, hospitals and community venues. ARTSCONNECT’s teaching artists reach out to students with special needs via, among other

aspiring musical theater students. At the end of the weeklong program, friends and parents are invited to view an informal presentation showcasing the cast and highlighting the week’s efforts.

MASTERS AT THE CENTER provides careerbound young artists the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with a variety of leading artists. CHOC OUTREACH sees Center artists regularly visit patients at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, bringing joy to ill children by brightening their spirits in their hospital rooms.

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS, which aims to help students develop self-confidence and artistic skills, grants four lucky schools a 17-week musical theater residence that concludes with a 30-minute Disney KIDS Musical performed at the respective institutions.

Expanding its community events programs and relationships with local organizations is also a Center objective—Hispanic community outreach, in particular, is a top priority. There are also both on- and off-site outreach efforts working with Costa Mesa’s Concerts in the Park series. Meanwhile, there are free plaza concerts, featuring guests like prominent jazz musician Chris Botti, and, more recently, Movie Mondays, which have become increasingly popular, with the latter serving as a new vehicle to expand the Center’s fan base.

“We believe that we have a professional and moral obligation to reach out to the community, and we embrace the opportunity to do so,” explains Center President Terry Dwyer, who took the helm in 2006. And, with a staff of 102 fulltime personnel and an annual budget of over $40 million at his disposal, Dwyer has the personnel and resources to accomplish the Center’s goals— principally, the very one to which its slogan aspires, “Impacting our Community Through the Arts.” SCFTA.org baskmagazine.com

IN THE GLOW

LONDON CALLING Quill London’s eclectic assemblage of refined wares proves that paper is still noteworthy.

The notion behind fine paper purveyor Quill London came from the same wellspring of every worthy inkling: passion. In this case, founder Lucy Edmonds’ persistent love affair with stationery. From a notebook Edmonds toted and cards she sent friends to a sundry of objets and curios, all reflected her own style—an ethos she carried to Quill London, its impetus to bestow Britain with “beautiful, trend-led paper products” she felt missing in missives.

Today, Quill London stocks a variety of stationery products from a bustle of burgeoning independent design talent and letterpress studios, along with appearances from familiar luminaries like Christian Lacroix and Kate Spade New York. “Our collection is unique in the way we curate a blend of very different contemporary styles, capture style trends, and present hand-crafted, quality products in a very affordable way,” says Edmonds, whose brand savvy approach appeals to the style-conscious set; creatives, in particular, clamor over her mélange of merch. From correspondence cards, gift tags, invites and pompoms to an array of desk accessories recalling both vintage (a letter opener) and modern sensibilities (an iPad cover), the Quill London aesthetic is au courant and contemporary.

“We capture style trends, and present hand-crafted, quality products in a very affordable way.” As for the enduring appeal of Quill London product picks? Credit more than mere nostalgia. For Edmonds, her lingering ardor for paper indicates a universal longing to mark the moment. Paper, she allows, is “a time-honored form of communication that can also act as a keepsake of [an] event, as texts, emails and tweets are so fleeting and temporary.” It also works wonders in romancing just about any space; given a few chic accessories (may we suggest a fashionable fountain pen and tasseled storage box?), for example, and even the lowly home office comes to life. Upcoming for Quill London is the debut of a beautiful holiday collection comprising lines from StudioSarah, Sugar Paper, Choux à la Crème and—take note, travelers!—a series of holiday pop-up shops across the pond. Now that’s something to write about. QuillLondon.com

HEATH CERAMICS More than half a century after its founding, the California-born brand is still one of the design world’s most reliable producers of warmly minimal wares.

When ceramicist Edith Heath founded Heath Ceramics in 1948, she did so with GreatDepression durability and postwar practicality in mind. Her reverence for process and material would become mainstays for the producer of classic, simple, clean design, with its non-porous products stressing function over fuss. Although Heath died in 2005, her imprint on the heritage brand to which she leant her name, and her legacy as an industrialarts pioneer (much of her own work is housed in permanent collections at MOMA and LACMA), endures.

It’s a proper coda for the craft-first company; one that in making only what can be sustained has inadvertently sustained itself while continuing to attract a far-and-wide audience for its refined, no-frills wares. While some things haven’t changed for the enterprise—namely its focus on responsible, small-run production practices and base of operations in Sausalito, Calif.—others have. Expanding its retail roots, Heath Ceramics now boasts stores in Los Angeles and San Francisco, with the latter city also hosting the brand’s tile factory and the Heath Clay Studio, a hub for new product design. Although purchased from the Heath family in 2003 by Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey, Heath Ceramics has not shirked its craftsman code—all 60 artisans in the company’s employ continue to create simple products of everyday allure. These range from Heath’s now iconic tableware and tile to an array of collaborations with top design talent. Clearly, by continuing to rally design aficionados with its heirloom objets—pieces that now enjoy a plum presence in private residences, restaurants and museums worldwide—Heath Ceramics is still in good hands. Wine, dine & feel fine Embracing wine, and wellness, in the Napa Valley IF YOU’RE LIKE MOST PEOPLE, “fine wine” (followed closely by “fabulous food”) springs to mind when you first hear the words Napa Valley. But there are other expressions used to describe an experience here, among the most enticing being “wellness,” “balance” and “relaxation.” These days, visiting Northern California’s renowned valley can, in fact, be a holistic experience —one that seamlessly melds all these things into one wonderful, therapeutic whole.

With a feeling of Zen inherent in Napa Valley (virtually every one of its resorts and hotels is in some way devoted to creating a haven of relaxation for guests), a wellness-and-wine trip amongst its vines necessarily starts with choosing a home base, especially since so many resorts have made inner-you indulgences a focal point.

Well Napa

The valley’s overwhelming sense of calm is immediately felt. While making your way up Route 29 (or, better still, the Silverado Trail), soak in the light bouncing off the vineyards and mountains, inhale deeply, exhale the same way, and experience the sensation of dying and going to heaven. Add in some spa treatments, yoga classes, mud baths and sunny poolside moments, and any lingering stress you may have brought with you simply flies away. At the south end of the valley, both skirting and in the town of Napa, is the inn crowd—Napa River Inn, Carneros Inn and Milliken Creek Inn. All are brilliant options, with cozy Milliken Creek making it possible to enjoy a deep-tissue massage outdoors while overlooking the water. Meanwhile, midway up the valley, in Yountville, the beautiful LEED Platinum-certified Bardessono Hotel is an oasis of calm, with 62 rooms, a sleek spa and regular yoga classes. Bardessono.com

Further north, in Calistoga, which marks the top end of the valley, wellness has been a part of the fabric of the community since 1862, when the area’s first resort designed for visitors to “take the waters” (and mud baths) in abundant local, natural hot springs opened. While in town, choose to stay at the Chanric Inn—a charming bed and breakfast—and visit one of the pastoral town’s many day spas offering these same treatments today. Or, move to sumptuous Solage Calistoga, where a truly astonishing spa, fitness and yoga center await. (Even if not bunking here, be sure to experience the Mudslide Experience.) For the ultimate wellness sanctuary, check into Calistoga Ranch, a place consistently awarded top accolades—and for good reason. This 157-acre enclave laced with hiking trails is tucked into the woods, with each of its freestanding guest lodges taking shape as a stunning rustic retreat, complete with an outdoor living room. The spa is spectacular, featuring spring-fed mineral pools, outdoor treatments, yoga sessions (some private) and wellness classes daily. SolageCalistoga.com

Well Napa

Cade Winery

“finding true happiness in Napa Valley means striking a BALANCE between experiencing its WELLNESS possibilities and CULINARY indulgences”

Dedicated to keeping the valley a place where connecting with nature beyond the vineyards is always an option, the Land Trust of Napa County protects thousands of acres and regularly offers kayak and canoe trips along with scenic hikes (climb high above the valley for a great workout and a fascinating lookdown to the wineries below).

Get even closer to liquid gold by renting bicycles at Calistoga Bikeshop, where wellness and wine really do collide. Here, they’ll happily chart a meandering route down less-traveled byways for you, but one that eventually leads to places like Chateau Montelena (home to fantastic Chardonnays and Cabernets), which, at a famous blind tasting in Paris, put Napa wine on the map back in 1976. Montelena.com

Of course, finding true happiness in Napa Valley means striking a balance between experiencing its wellness possibilities and culinary indulgences, including world-class fare and delicious wine relished in magical surrounds. A stress-free way to enjoy all of this while also seeing much of the valley is on the Napa Wine Train, a relaxing roll through the vineyards, with fine wines and food at your beck and call. Or, simply roam from winery to winery, hitting favorites like Shafer Vineyards in the Stags Leap District, its Relentless Syrah red blend recently named the world’s number-one wine or, Judd’s Hill Winery in Napa, where, via a blending seminar, you can try your hand at making your own top-tier vintage. (Tote home your creation too!) While on Howell Mountain, visit CADE Estate Winery for spectacular views and highly-rated vino, then stop to see legendary filmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s reinvention of Inglenook Winery on the valley floor in Rutherford. WineTrain.com

Well Napa

All along the way, sustain yourself with incredible eats. In Napa, do breakfast at Model Bakery, where the line filters out the doors for very good reason. For lunch, swing by Oxbow Public Market, where a variety of organically grown tastes await. At the modern Italian mainstay of the valley, Bistro Don Giovanni, there’s a sunny patio and local attitude to go with great pizza and handmade pasta. Or, try Norman Rose Tavern, where the Disco Potatoes alone will make you swoon. Stop by Lulu’s Kitchen at 1313 Main for a quick bite, or go all out with a world-class dining experience at Morimoto. Speaking of class, in Yountville, famed Thomas Keller concept The French Laundry marks the crème de la crème of culinary options. But while in the tiny valley town, also sample the garden-grown freshness of Lucy at Bardessono and the succulent wild boar at Hurley’s Restaurant. Up the road in St. Helena, find two wonderful classics in Tra Vigne and Terra Restaurant & Bar, while further still, in Calistoga, dining is a simply delicious prospect with venues like JoLe, the Calistoga Inn and Michelin-star-rated Solbar at Solage Calistoga. So whether it’s wine, wellness or a combination of both—once you’ve wined, dined and felt fine in Napa Valley, you’ll be raising your glass for more.

COASTAL ALLURE

Brilliant beauty abounds at Vietnam’s best beachfront resorts.

A wine cellar tucked into a natural cavern sets the scene for a romantic dinner for two.

Beyond Six Senses

NINH VAN BAY Arrive à la James Bond to the white sands and exotic cliffs of a private bay on the East Vietnam Sea. Here, the Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, accessible only by boat, is the epitome of forbidden bliss and the ultimate escape—a combination of modern luxuries and all the natural, holistic beauty Vietnam has to offer.

At Ninh Van Bay, guests stay in private villas dotting both the shore and hillside. Some feature lush, private gardens or direct access to the beach, but all come with breathtaking views, absolute privacy and—topping it all off— infinity plunge pools. Add rustic wooden features bathing in natural light to crisp linens floating in the ocean breeze and you have the ideal atmosphere for total relaxation.

The simple serenity stemming from this immersion in nature is integrated into most aspects of resort life; guests can dine on daybeds or enjoy patio seating with panoramic views at one of the three resort restaurants. Or, should you grow weary of watching the sun set over the sea (as if that might actually be possible), make a reservation for the wine cave, a private wine cellar nuzzled into a rustic natural cavern in the hillside. Tucked into the same hillside is the Six Senses

Spa, where locally grown plants and herbs are used for holistic rejuvenation.

Six Senses also offers a number of excursions, water sports and other activities for the more restless (or merely curious). Center yourself with morning Tai Chi or a hike to the top of Heo Mountain, where the views are nothing short of enlightening. Take to the shallows of crystal waters for some snorkeling, or go slightly farther out via speedboat on an outing to three of Ninh Van Bay’s neighboring islands. For a true escape from reality, join the boat expedition down the Cai River and lose yourself to the hot mud bath waiting at journey’s end. If hustle and bustle is more your scene, take a trip to the city of Nha Trang, where you can pay your respects to Yan Po Nagar, goddess of the country, at the Po Nagar temple and shop local streets for a piece of culture by which to remember your travels.

Naturally, many offerings at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay are rooted in Vietnamese tradition. As such, guests can immerse themselves in indigenous culture by taking cooking classes for instruction in how to cook traditional Vietnamese fare (followed by indulging in the self-prepared meal with a nice glass of wine).

CON DAO Fly over crystalline blue seas and breathtaking tropical landscapes to one of the most well-hidden destinations in all of Vietnam. Just off the Southeast coast of the mainland, the Six Senses Con Dao is renowned for its uninhibited natural beauty and stunning ocean views—and for good reason. Inspired by the native fishing villages of coastal Vietnam, the contemporarily architected property allows guests to indulge in all the modern luxuries of a premier resort, only in an exotic, remote, unsullied locale. And, in true village style, the resort is home to 50 carefully curated villas. Each of these open-air options boasts a spacious floor plan, and, of course, a private infinity pool with awe-inspiring panoramic ocean views—perfect for enjoying a cocktail and watching one of many magnificent island sunsets.

The undisturbed beauty of Con Dao infuses itself into every aspect of the isle resort, especially its delicious culinary scene. Perched atop golden sand dunes, By the Beach offers Asian fusion fare along with glorious ocean outlooks (enjoy dinner here, then saunter along the shoreline of the serene, moonlit sea for a truly spellbinding evening). For a more cultural dining experience, Vietnamese at the Market offers traditional, local flavors in a recreated fishing village. Or, 54

enjoy the resort’s custom Destination Dining for a bespoke alternative.

Further submerge yourself in the island’s natural serenity at the Six Senses Spa at Con Dao. Set amid the verdant Lo Voi Mountains, and surrounded by tropical gardens, this calming oasis offers holistic treatments in both indoor treatment rooms and outdoor salas for an afternoon, or evening, of uninterrupted tranquility.

For the slightly more adventure-minded, the resort avails a host of land and sea exploits. Venture into the lush tropical rainforests of Con Dao to experience its raw, uninhabited beauty, or plunge into the island’s pristine turquoise waters and explore colorful aquaculture while snorkeling. Meanwhile, more experienced marine types are invited to take a scuba diving excursion to one the island’s untouched coral reefs—home to slick rays, giant turtles and small bamboo sharks—for a most treasurable experience. At the heart of Con Dao is the vibrant, flourishing Vietnamese culture, which guests can glimpse while touring the island’s backroads, small dwellings and local farms, all exuding the destination’s old world enchantment.

“The fantastically BEAUTIFUL Piedmont—a winemaking region deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural landmark for being ‘emblematic of the development of VINEYARDS and in Italian HISTORY’—is waiting.” Taking the road less traveled leads to some incredible discoveries, especially when the road winds its way through the gorgeous landscapes of the Piedmont and Treviso regions in Northern Italy. So fill your flute with a glass of Brachetto d’Acqui or Prosecco, and come along for a food and wine adventure—with a sprinkling of history and culture, of course. First, choose a time to visit. We’re partial to fall for many reasons: cooler temperatures; fewer tourists; a grape harvest in full swing; and truffles, glorious white truffles, along with porcini mushrooms—both in season.

There’s never a bad time to visit this part of the world, but before you leave the U.S., book a Rail Europe Eurail Italy Pass, which makes getting around by train a snap, and rent an XCom Global mobile hotspot, which allows you to run WiFi on up to 10 devices anywhere for just $15 a day (a real steal).

Ease out of your jet lag with a stay at the Four Seasons Milan, a former 15th century convent repurposed to perfectly blend old world and new. Shop the famed Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Della Spiga nearby; visit the imposing cathedral, Milan Duomo; and dine at the hotel’s exemplary restaurant, La Veranda, which plates to-die-for osso buco. FourSeasons.com/Milan

every turn. All of these pepper this picture perfect region; and take pause to savor all the locally-sourced cuisine, too. In Asti, seek out award-winning Ristorante Gener Neuv and taste the white-truffle-laden homemade pasta; and, in Acqui Terme, sample a spectacular antipasto platter of local meats and cheeses that you’ll dream about for weeks at Ristorante Enoteca La Curia. RistoranteLaCuria.com Next, move on to the Treviso region—and, more specifically, the ConeglianoValdobbiadene area within it. This is the home of Prosecco, Italy’s most famous spumante, which, like France’s Champagne, is a term only to be used for sparkling wine made in the specific Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC, the regional classification) of Prosecco from the Glera grape. Take the train across the breathtaking countryside of Conegliano and end up in Follina. Here, unpack at the lovely Hotel Villa Abbazia, a Relais & Chateaux property created from a 17th-century estate that boasts the one-star Michelin restaurant, La Corte.

Beyond Italy

But as the fantastically beautiful Piedmont—a winemaking region deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural landmark for being “emblematic of the development of vineyards and in Italian history”—is waiting, catch the train for a quick trip to the province and let the bubbly fun begin.

Let the Relais San Maurizio luxury spa resort be your home base. At this stunning monastery-turned-resort, perched high in the hills, you’ll find incredible views; impeccable service; a unique, water-centric spa; and the Michelin-starred restaurant, Guido da Costigliole, which is well worth visiting. RelaisSanMaurizio.it Although the Piedmont is known for its big red B’s—Barolo and Barbaresco— we adore the region’s sparkling red iteration: Brachetto d’Acqui, which only grows here and is a light, aromatic bubbly made in the Acqua Terme area since Roman times. Blended to be imbibed when young, these delicately delicious wines usually offer up flavors of roses, raspberries and strawberries. Look for the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation on the bottle, which indicates that 100 percent Brachetto grapes were used in its creation. To taste spumante (“sparkling wine” in Italian) gems, make sure to visit some of its best producers: Bersano, also home to a fascinating museum; Braida, with a beautiful tasting room; Tre Secoli, the hilly vineyards of which yield some intensely delicious Brachettos; Cuvage, a modern addition to the more venerable wineries in the area; and Banfi, whose luscious Rosa Regale is the best-known Brachetto d’Acqui sold in America. Along the way, watch for castles, churches and other picturesque sights around

Luckily, from here you’ll be in the center of the Prosecco Superiore DOCG, where Italy’s best bubbly is produced. With similarly lush vineyards built on very steep slopes, the region is Piedmont’s equal in beauty. There’s even a Wine Road (Italy’s first, dating from 1966) that takes travelers right through the heart of this beautiful country.

Beginning at the iconic medieval castle Castello di San Salvatore, in Susegana, visit the Conte Collalto Winery, where the castle’s owners have made wine since the Middle Ages. Nowadays, their Spumante Brut Prosecco literally has tiny bubbles and wondrous tastes of pear and apple. The family-run BiancaVigna may not have a castle, but its varied Proseccos are some of the area’s best. Be sure to add Bortolotti Winery in Valdobbiadene to your agenda and stop at Bortolin Winery, in a picturesque little village. Then, just wander, for there are more than 100 wineries in Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, and you’re sure to discover many new loves along the way.

Finally, chase the bubbles all the way to Venice, just 40 miles south of the Prosecco Superiore region. Perhaps the most incredible city on the planet, it’s just the place for a fine finish. Stay at the Metropole Hotel, near St. Mark’s Square, and dine at its renowned Met Restaurant, or eat nearby at the Ristorante Wildner, where the slow food-localvore movement is in full swing, with outstanding results. HotelMetropole.com Toast to bittersweet endings with a glass of Brachetto d’Acqui or Prosecco Superiore on the deck of the wonderful Centurion Palace Hotel’s Antinoo’s Restaurant, perched right on the Grand Canal (and sleep at the hotel, too, in one of its eye-popping suites featuring expansive views). SinaHotels.com That experience truly is a perfect way to conclude an unforgettable journey across some of Italy’s less-traveled, wine-filled landscapes. One that will most certainly sparkle in memory for years to come. baskmagazine.com

For true relaxation, escape to the Therapy Pool, a hidden infinity pool found on an exclusive balcony within the Spa & Salon. Afterwards, treat yourself to one of the restorative services headlining the spa’s complete menu in preparation for a night out on the town.

Home Coral Ridge PREVIOUS PAGE | After building custom luxury homes in Orange County for nearly 20 years, Haigh Builders is partnering with McKown Weinstein & Partners to list their newest estate, situated at the highest point of the Crystal Cove community. Here, the newly built site reveals a magnificent lookout where a cool-hued pool echoes vibrant reflections of the Pacific and Newport Harbor’s seamless seaside views, while an adjacent French stone-laden sitting area with a warm antique, reclaimed terra cotta fireplace cultivates a cozy atmosphere. THIS PAGE | Built on a 22,000-sized lot, the home allows for a 35-foot overall building height—resulting in soaring 14-foot ceilings on the first floor and 12-foot ceilings on the second floor— adding volume to the opulent “Northern Italian” vernacular, an amalgam designer Todd Haigh refers to as “the grandeur of Beverly Hills estates of the past with modern-day livability.” Enter the front door, and one is immediately embraced by a formal grand hallway and foyer that “pulls the eye directly through the home to the white water,” adds Haigh. Waiting at the end of the center-spined hall, and beyond the architecturally authentic handcrafted stone columns, is an ostensibly casual living area that opens to a splendid heated patio, affording expansive and unobstructed coastal panoramas.

ABOVE | Ensconced further back, an expansive kitchen with abundant windows filters natural light and coveted ocean views into the relaxed space, finished with classically detailed custom cabinetry and moldings; signature bleached and gray-washed walnut ceiling beams; state-of-the-art appliances; a butler’s kitchen; and a unique, hand-forged silver leaf wrought iron chandelier overhead. Combined, these features foster an idyllic sitting area.

Home Coral Ridge

ABOVE | A fringe of lush foliage flanks the residential exterior, adding strength and maturity to the stately

Reminiscent of a classically timeless aesthetic, the prominent geometric pattern modeled throughout the residence is applied as ceiling dĂŠcor, while tall vertical windows help further elongate the room. OPPOSITE | Intended as a library or music room, dark stained walnut walls and shelves juxtaposed with a French-stone fireplace fashion a warm, dramatic ambiance.

Not only does the sprawling 13,400-square-foot estate claim five capacious bedrooms and nine beautifully appointed bathrooms, its scale also makes way for an impressive array of features. Of these, a 14-seat theater and 12-car garage flaunt considerable capacity for their respective holdings, while a climate-controlled wine cellar with custom black walnut racking and storage for 1,200 bottles complements a full-functioning bar and palatial entertainment area.

Sitting on a flat, 1.9acre parcel, the property spans three buildings: a main residence, guest and pool house. (A six-car garage features oversize spaces for fine modes of transport.) A wide, formal walk leads to the 10,394-square-foot main house, which sports a spectacular statement foyer featuring custom iron and glass doors. Beyond are eight generously scaled bedrooms, most of which include private terraces, en-suite baths, and walk-in closets. THIS PAGE | Curated for the utmost in quality, the home’s open chef’s kitchen, which gives way to a family room, bar and more, is a professional-grade masterpiece—and a culinary dream for home cooks and top chefs alike. The finest of finishes, including exotic slab stone and custom Clive Christian cabinetry hailing from Europe, complement a state-of-the-art kitchen suite, which integrates a La Cornue range; Shaw Farm sinks, dishwashers, and warming drawers; an espresso machine; and dual Sub-Zeros. Also on the ground floor is a butler’s pantry and laundry room.

the home set the scene for all-occasion entertaining— from intimate get-togethers to grand-sized galas. With fittings to befit the social whirl, each salon flaunts a fireplace and uninterrupted access to adjoining alfresco spaces. These spaces also tout a sublime texture of rich woods, luxe fabrics and artisan-laid stone flooring to complement the columns flanking its points of entry—their presence adding a sophisticated element of architecture. OPPOSITE | Also on the main level is a full bar and executive study/library, where the combination of a fireplace and hand-selected furnishings and accessories create an elegant effect. The space’s floor-to-ceiling paneling comes courtesy of artisan millworkers, whose custom touch cultivates a sumptuous place for repose.

With five-star resort flair, the pool imparts an immediate sense of calm for an oasis-like effect. Complementing this is plush outdoor seating flanking a modern fireplace, which infuses the space with contemporary allure. Soaring over the scene, immense palms stand sentry. From here are unobstructed views of the estate’s spacious acreage. Sharing these meticulously manicured grounds are mature trees and a water well. Walled and fenced for privacy and security, the property also boasts a detached guest house that, like the main residence, has an elevator. With this uplifting feature comes two bedrooms and two baths, a full kitchen and an ample living room. The pool house, meanwhile, makes its own statement with a lineup of luxuries that include a kitchen and outdoor barbecue counterpart, as well as a media room.

Whether used to cover a room’s walls entirely or to accent only one, wallpaper is, aesthetically, unmatched in impact by house paint (plus, it’s far more fun). Quality, hand-finished wallpaper, some subtle, others boldly graphic, is all you need—no art required. Built in 1862, this splendid, 23,000-square-foot New York City townhouse has eight bedrooms. Its aesthetic, achieved by Meridith Baer and her team, conveys elegance through a classic feel and wellchosen furnishings.

Meridith Baer It was by accident that Meridith Baer fell into the world of home staging 15 years ago, when the furniture and plants she was storing at a friend’s house helped him sell for half-a-million dollars above asking price. But it’s no accident that Meridith Baer Home is now at the global forefront of the home staging, furnishing and interior design industries, or that its talented namesake has her own hit show on HGTV, Staged to Perfection. After all, Baer’s innate eye for lived-in luxury transforms homes that consistently sell quickly and at the highest prices in their neighborhoods–– including the abodes of quite a few A-listers. And if there’s anything that mirrors the scale of Baer’s success, it’s her 135,000-square-foot company warehouse in Los Angeles, stocked to the rafters with trendsetting furnishings and décor in every design style imaginable. With her unlimited imagination and unparalleled ability to inspire, Baer continues to impress homeowners and buyers alike—this is hardly accidental.

A Ladera couple who love to entertain wanted to cultivate an experience for guests the moment they step into the home. In turn, Ribeiro staged a foyer with elegant, muted tones juxtaposed with chic, modern hardware.

Valerie Ribeiro “I’ve been a homemaker since the age of 5,” jokes Valerie Ribeiro, who, in addition to dozens of extravagant pillow forts, has 16 years as a professional design consultant for Greystone Homes, Shea Homes and K. Hovnanian Homes under her belt—not to mention kudos from more than 3,500 ecstatic new homeowners, all consistently ranking her at the top of customer satisfaction surveys. After leaving the world of new construction in 2009, Ribeiro hit the ground running with her own business, Sérendipité. And even now, she never does the same thing twice. By tapping into clients’ individual tastes, personalities and lifestyles, Ribeiro continues to create harmonious spaces that are uniquely theirs. After all, for Ribeiro, a home should reflect its homeowner. And so, she offers interior restyling. One of the most popular and unique services to come down the pike, the two-hour consultation sees the stylemaker reimagine a room to highlight clients’ already-owned heirlooms and special pieces. “Each client is very special to me, and I want to create an experience for them,” Ribeiro says. “I want everything in my wake to be memorable.”

With its insulation properties against hard surfaces, the textural softness of this cornerstone décor element becomes infinitely more interesting. In design, one should buy the best that budget can afford— and rugs are no exception. Merging Western design with Tibetan and Nepali expertise, carpets from The Rug Company are made from the finest material to better wear, clean and appear over time—lasting for generations. Using wool of extraordinary properties, and dedicated to the importance of design, The Rug Company integrates a handmade technique more than 2,000 years old with current artistic designs to create the beautiful, aesthetic appeal of its floor coverings. bright stars! Among the dazzling seaside surrounds of the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf resort in Mexico, fishing and golf enthusiasts stayed the course for a weekend of play and relaxation at the 18th Annual Stars & Stripes Tournament. During the four-day event, held June 26-29, more than 600 guests angled, putted and reveled to benefit Orange County youth charities. While enjoying all the spectacular luxury spoils the Hilton has to offer, guests also indulged in magnificent deepsea fishing excursions and put to use their putting skills at one of Mexico’s premium golf courses.

And the musical entertainment certainly did not disappoint—actor Gary Sinise & The Lt. Dan Band gave a fabulous Saturday night performance, while speed painter Michael Israel and Super Diamond, a Neil Diamond tribute band, lit up the stage on other nights. Always, however, attendees kept in mind the tourney’s true stars: the children it aided. Especially true this year, the event reeled in record-setting numbers to benefit the cause. Remaining dedicated to creating lasting memories for both benefactors and beneficiaries, Stars & Stripes shines a little brighter each year.

heart of the ocean

Tucked away in a secluded Laguna Beach coastal villa, celebrities, conservationists and ocean enthusiasts alike gathered together for the 7th Annual Oceana SeaChange Summer Party. The scene was reminiscent of an underwater paradise with elegantly appointed décor, including marineinspired table settings, vibrant floral sculptures and luxe lounge chairs by Marc Pridmore Designs. Upon entering, the 400 guests in attendance, including eco-conscious A-listers Leonardo DiCaprio, Ted Danson, Oscar Nunez, and Laura Dern, among a host of other notables, mingled while enjoying spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and villa

gardens before sitting down to a sumptuous meal and presentations from Oceana members and supporters. And while it was California Campaign Director Geoff Shester who supplied the occasion’s inspirational keynote, environmental advocate and avid diver Leonardo DiCaprio was honored for his passionate commitment to protecting the world’s oceans. Towards evening’s end, guests were treated to a fire-dance performance and reveled in a live auction. Before dispersing, however, all made their way to the Post Party Lounge, where they swayed to soft rhythms amid cool, coastal ocean breeze— something they all came to protect.

breath of elegance As the sun set over Newport Coast on May 31, more than 425 exquisitely garbed guests entered the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa for the Cystic Fibrosis Guild’s 31st Annual Gala. Aglow with firelight, the hotel’s outdoor terrace hosted the cocktail hour, where mingling guests noshed on carefully curated hors d’oeuvres and sipped specialty cocktails. Gala Chairs Dan and Gayle Demsher commenced the evening festivities by introducing an emotional speech about the trials of living with Cystic Fibrosis that moved and further inspired guests on behalf of the cause. No

one, however, could have been more inspiring than the Stremick family, recipients of the prestigious “Breath of Life” award for their devotion to finding a cure. Things took an upbeat turn with the start of the live auction, which saw guests energetically bid on trips to New York City, Hawaii and Courcheval, along with bespoke items such as an autographed Katy Perry Guitar and a handsome Baume & Mercier men’s watch. Keeping the lively beat, guests danced to The Droppers while downing their cocktails—even as the evening came to a close. As always, the event was one to remember.

soirée by the sea Vibrant lights, sweet scents and the sound of carnival games floated towards the skyline as more than 400 guests arrived at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa for Pacific Symphony’s annual “By the Sea” Gala. Set to the background of waves crashing along the iconic Huntington Beach Boardwalk, a truly stunning cocktail hour reimaged coastal amusement with dizzying delights. Adorned in black-tie attire and dazzling art deco dress, gala-goers were transported back to the classic 1900s-era of California coast amusement parks, complete with

carnival games, a giant Ferris Wheel and gourmet festival treats. Inside the hotel’s grand ballroom, tables draped with pale, sea green linens, and set with beautiful white orchid floral displays, reflected the evening’s elegant beachside ambiance. During dinner, guests indulged in a sumptuous multicourse meal and participated in the lively “FundA-Dream” auction, generously raising 1.6 million for the orchestra’s programs. The celebratory spirit continued with a lavish dessert hour, featuring live music, dancing and a delectable assortment of candied apples. A sweet treat by the sea, indeed.

Table Saint Martha

IN CENTRAL LOS ANGELES, in the heart of Koreatown, a stark-red door marks a hidden treasure: Saint Martha. Enter this culinary realm, a delicious juxtaposition of urban and refined, where figures in Victorianera paintings don LA Dodgers caps and sea urchin is served on seaweed Doritos. Appropriately named after the Patron Saint of cooks and servants, Saint Martha boasts a beverage program of more than 50 wines, sakes and craft beers, along with an esoteric menu nothing short of divine. Executive Chef Nick Erven modernizes traditional American cuisine by integrating elements from Koreatown’s cultural melting pot. Delve into time-old, savory smoked brisket with Chinese flair and a hoisin glaze, served with tiny lettuce and root vegetables, or devour Santa Barbara Spot Prawn Tartare with hints of melon and citrus. So, just how heavenly is Saint Martha? Your world may never be the same. SaintMarthaRestaurant.com
