Sitting on the second floor across from the Hamilton Hotel, Route 66 has specials available all through the week to keep patrons busy. There’s a fully stocked bar, great selection of imported drafts and bottled beers, and more than enough cocktails to keep a steady buzz. Looking into the windows, visitors can view patrons sipping tea and chattering in the sunlight. The sunlit white room with sophisticated interiors are reminiscent of a modern Parisian dessert boutique. LOUISIR’s cakes, beautifully assembled by one of the two sisters who run the café, can be paired with their rich selection of teas. YONGSAN NEWS FIRST ANNUAL “ROUTE 66 CHILI COOK OFF Ordering chili, whether it be on hot dogs or as a side dish, is always a crap shoot in Korea. Lucky instances result in chili with beans, meat and onions with sour cream. On the other, you can end up with Sriracha, water sauces and tears. Thankfully, Route 66 is here to save all expat-kind with their first annual “Route 66 Cook Off.” The list of participants is ever-growing with Route 66 offering up their own in-house chili as well. Tickets will be W20,000 at the door and the event will take place Saturday, October 18th. 용산소식 ITAEWON FESTIVALS It’s festival season in Itaewon with two major events: the Itaewon Global Village Festival on October 11-12 and the HBC Fall Fest on October 17 - 19. The Itaewon Global Village Festival will occur on the main street in front of Itaewon Station, which will be blocked off to make way for parades and live performances. A wide range of multicultural events will take place during the two days with performers from all over the world. This year, the festival will feature a special “Craft Beer Zone” where you can try various craft brews from several different microbrewery vendors that will be selling their unique creations. Along with delicious craft brews, the festival will also feature food from around the world, Korean food, parades, and other fun festivities. The 2014 HBC Fall Fest will take place in the two Yongsan-Gu neighborhoods of ‘Hae Bang Chon’ and ‘Gyeong Li Dan’. The HBC festival is the expat music festival featuring over 100 live acts in twenty independent venues spread over three days, and is the largest independent artist showcase in Korea. Fall Festival 2014 sees the return of regular venues like Phillies, Bonny’s Pizza Pub, and Camarata Music, with additions and returning spaces: Good To Go, Pet Sounds, Thunderhorse Tavern, Craftworks, and Upper Deck. The latest addition to the Fest, is the return of comedy featuring comedians like Brian Aylward, who is putting together a documentary about the comedy circuit in Asia. HALLOWEEN IN ITAEWON CONTENTS

When I arrived in Korea in 2004, Halloween wasn’t much of an event. There were lots of house parties, occasionally you’d see some masks and capes available at one of the larger chain stores, and some of the after-school academies would have themed parties to encourage kids to participate but for the most part it was very low key. Ten years later and I’m proud to say that my favorite holiday has really found legs in Korea, particularly in the Itaewon neighborhood of Seoul. A big reason for this has been the increased willingness of locals to take part. Whether it be a minimalist animal ears headband, simple latex mask, or a full-on costume with make-up, young Koreans have really started to run with it, and the last few years have really started to ramp up in step with the gentrification of Itaewon. Countless pubs and clubs in the area host their own parties, but for me the street is where the action is at. Expect to see loads of the new “selfie sticks” out in force as people stop to pose and chat with complete strangers who are also partaking in the festivities. Of course, Korea’s lax enforcement of open container laws means that, weather permitting, one can enjoy a great Halloween party atmosphere without even setting foot inside. The last few years have seen a bit of confusion with Halloween falling mid-week, but this year with the 31st landing on a Friday there’s no question as to when the party will take place. There will probably be a handful of parties the following day as well, so be sure to suit up and get out early to take part and enjoy the show! Finding costumes requires a simple portal search for “Halloween costumes in Korea”. There are a few good brick and mortar shops in Seoul, but the best option for most people is online sales/rental. Most sites are 100% in Korean so you might need a little help navigating.

이태원의 할로윈
2004년, 내가 한국에 도착했을당시 할로윈은 그렇게 큰 이벤트는 아니였다. 많은 하우스 파티들이 있었고 때때로 마스크나 망토같은 것들을 큰 상점에서 팔기도했다. 그리고 어떤 학교에서는 아이들로 하여금 참여를 장려하기위해 테마가 있는 파티를 열었지만 그 또한 역시 그렇게 큰 규모는 아니였다. 그 후로 부터 10년 뒤, 나는 내가 가장 좋아하는 축제를 한국에서 찾게 되었는데, 특히 서울에 있는 이태원에서 찾을 수 있었다. 아주 작게는 그저 동물 귀모양의 머리띠, 심플한 여러가지 모양의 마스트, 또는 메이크업과 코스튬 복장이었지만 이태원에선 이 행사에 기꺼이 참여하고자 하는 젊은 한국인들이 늘어났고 지난 몇년동안 이것은 이태원의 고급화와 함께 증가하기 시작했던 것이다. 셀 수 없이 많은 술집과 클럽이 파티를 열었지만, 오히려 나에게는 이태원의 거리들이 이러한 것들을 더 잘 볼 수 있는 장소라고 생각한다. ‘셀카봉'이라는 것이 사람들에게 유행으로 번지면서 사람들은 포즈를 취하기 위해 가던 길을 멈추고 축제에 참여하는 낯선 사람들과 대화를 나누게 될 것이다. 날씨가 허락된다면 즐거운 할로윈 파티의 기운을 레스토랑에 들어서지 않아도 길거리 도처에서 즐길 수 있을 것이다. 지난 몇년간 할로윈은 주중에 있었기때문에 조금의 혼란이 있었지만 이번 해는 31일이 금요일 이므로 그 날 파티가 열릴 것이라는 것에 어떠한 의문도 없다. 아마도 많은 수의 파티들이 31일에 개최될 것이며 복장을 갖추고 뛰쳐나와 빨리 이 축제에 참여하길 추천한다. 할로윈 코스튬을 찾는다면 "한국의 할로윈 복장"이라는 간단한 단어로 인터넷 검색을 하거나, 서울에 있는 소매상점에 방문하면 된다. 그러나 대부분의 사람들에게는 인터넷 할인이나 대여가 더 좋은 선택일 수도 있다. 많은 사이트들은 100% 한국어로 적혀있기 때문에 당신은 조금의 검색이 필요할지도 모른다.

Rising Stars: Chef Luca of Springs Taphouse You’d be forgiven if, while visiting the Springs Taphouse in Gyeongridan, you made a bee line straight to the craft beers on the menu; but you’d be missing out. Hustling in the kitchen, trying to coax all the flavor out of the Jeju black pork while getting it just the right level of salty and spicy, is Chef Luca, the main chef at the Springs Taphouse. At 27, Luca’s only been in the culinary arts for five years. Five years during which he’s risen through the ranks and impressed anyone with a tongue. His cooking career started with a position at Eddy’s Cafe, a popular restaurant in it’s own right spearheaded by celebrity chef Edward Kwon. From there he spent a year under Santino at his Grano restaurant in Apgujeong for a year and a half before landing his current role at the popular Gyeongridan mainstay. When he’s behind the counter, he’s busy firing up the oven for one of the Taphouse’s signature pizzas like the Strongman Pizza. Whether you’re in the mood for a beer or just something to snack on, Chef Luca’s cooking at the Springs Taphouse in Gyeongridan should be on your mind. Magna Fall
Magna Fall began 5 years ago when former member Neil Smith, David Holden on the drums, and vocalist /guitarist Kevin Heintz met at a bar in Bupyeong, Incheon. Together, they started as The Bastards of Bupyeong, and changed their name to Magna Fall a year later. They were soon joined by guitarist Do Joongmo and bassist Lee YounSoo. From bluesy rock to “progressive stoner rock”, Magna Fall has developed their unique style with lyrics as metaphors that describe the relationships, consumerism, religiosity, and the struggle from their surroundings. As one of the few expat bands in Korea, Magna Fall brings new sounds of rock into the K-Indie scene. Currently, the band is working on new songs to release a full-length album in the spring of 2015! Magna Fall 밴드는 5년 전에 시작되었다. 인천 부평 바에서 보커리스트/기타리스트 Kevin Heintz, 전 멤버였던 Neil Smith 와 드럼 연주자 David Holden의 만남이 시작되었다. 그 후 ‘The Bastards of Bupyeong’ 이라는 이름으로 공연을 하러 다녔고, 1년이 지난 후에는 ‘Magna Fall’이라는 밴드명으로 변경했다. 2011년에 기타리스트 도중모(Do Joongmo)를 Club FF에서 만나 나중에는 베이스 기타리스트 이윤수(Lee YounSoo) 도 같이 공연을 하게 되었다. Magna Fall의 블루스 락부터 프로그레시트 스토너 락의 유니크한 스타일로 재탄생한 연주를 들을 수 있다. 음악의 가사는 사람관계, 소비주의 사회, 독실함 그리고 투쟁을 은유적으로 표현한다. 한국에서 몇 없는 외국인 밴드로서 Magna Fall은 계속해서 새로운 소리를 찾아내고 이러한 소리를 한국 인디 음악계에 계속해서 제공하고 있다. 2015년 봄. 정규 앨범을 준비하고 있으니, 기대해도 좋을 것이다!
