{ Introduction }

Driven by an intense passion for architecture, I am always on my way of exploration into this discipline. In my undergraduate study, I partook in the Summer School to do some renewal designs of old regions in Shanghai. During this time, I gradually found how architecture affected people's lives and how the new buildings blended into the existing urban environment. The field survey triggered my interest in excavating urban histories to create beneficial designs meeting the actual needs of residents. To this end, I am eager to delve into Architecture and further probe into the connection between architecture and environment, so I apply for the MA Architecture and Historic Urban Environments program. My portfolio's theme is " new for old ( 立 旧 构 新 )", which explains how the new design is based on the existing environment (physical environment, history, people's needs, etc). I think architecture is a way to create a better life and provide not only a "space" but also a "place" for people. The five works in my portfolio explain "new for old" from several different aspects. The first one " Interactive Response" is mainly focused on the physical environment and people's needs. Its space formed originally from how students use the space in their study life. The second work "Compete for Chikan" is mainly connected with clan history. The heritage preservation route aims to activate the buildings it includes and help people understand Chikan old town from the points of two families' relationship in nearly a hundred years. The third work "Release the Gap" is mainly focused on the physical environment which is named "gap space", and different function blocks fit different types of gap spaces. The fourth work "Home for All" is a project coping with COVID-19, and its main target is disadvantaged people in the city. It's a share house (shelter) for all the people with strict route design based on the principle of safe distance to protect people from being infected. The final work " Wuhan Revival" is also a project coping with COVID-19, which comes from my personal experience. It's a future city model to solve the problems of the horizontal city (Wuhan) exposed in COVID-19.

01 Interactive Response renovation of Architecture's department based on BIM study mode

Location: Wuhan, China Area: 2900 ㎡ academic project Time: 2019.6-2019.11(year 4) Individual work Surveying, previous research, concept, design and all the drawings individually Instructor: Chen Qiuyu chenqiuyu@hust.edu.cn Li Xuan Nowadays, the architecture department in Hust is facing with the dilemma of not having enough space, so the renovation plan is coming out. The old department is full of the homogeneous spaces without flexible space to meet different demands from all the students. What's more, architecture teaching mode become more and more diverse since advances in computer technology. The design aims to create an accessory space to improve the utilization of spaces and resources, and provide more comprehensive, advanced and equal service for all the teachers and students. model maker and photographer:Da Manjie

02 Compete for Chikan historical heritage preservation project based on the history clues of relationship between Guan and Situ family

Location: Guangzhou, China Area: 3310 ㎡ Hust Graduation Thesis project (academic) Time: 2020.11-2021.6 (year 5) Individual work Surveying, previous research, concept, design and all the drawings individually Instructor: Tan Gangyi (HUST) tan_gangyi@163.com

Chikan Town is a very unique historical and commercial town in Guangdong province.There are two big families managing the whole Chikan: Guan and Situ. In the last hundred years, they competed with each other to gain the higher power and status in Chikan. However, their competing actions improved the quality of people's lives, since they built lots of public buildings in the town. The main concept of the design is from clan's history. I connect the history events with the site they happened, and form a route to reflect the relationship of the two families.The project aims to study rural culture and some basic principles and methods of heritage preservation. model maker and photographer:Da Manjie

03 Release the Gap renewal of waterfront space, landscape and community-site project urban plug-in of the gap space

Location: Suzhou Creek,Shanghai, China Area:64~4943 ㎡ HKU summer school project (academic) Time: 2019.7-2019.8 (year 3) Individual work Surveying, previous research, concept, design and all the drawings individually Instructor: Oscar Ko

Every city has lots of residual spaces because of urban expansion.Among them, some abandoned spaces can be identified as "gap space".Gap space can be alleys between the buildings; unused roof or some deserted waterfront. I make some different types of urban plug-in to activate these gap spaces, and such urban plug-in is a prototype which can be applied to other city's renewal project. The design mainly focused on the research of residual space, including record and classification of the gap space and each activate strategy to each type of gap space. author: Da Manjie

academic project (for competition) Time: 2020.7-2020.8 (year 4) Individual work Surveying, previous research, concept, design and all the drawings individually

When Covid-19 broke out in Wuhan in 2020, it's really a big disaster to the city. Because there were lots of people trapped in Wuhan with no house to live and no food to eat. At the same time, the hospital was full of patients who only ate some taste- awful food provided by the hospital. The small share house is a shelter for the vagrants and a public kitchen for patients and their relatives. The design is mainly reflecting on the epidemic to the city and create a new share house model which fulfill the principle of safety distance and help those disadvantaged people during the epidemic.

They relay on the hospital's 24h free hot water and free meals to maintain daily basic needs.

05 Wuhan Revival compact high-rise architecture design coping with the COVID-19

Location: Wuhan, China Area:141144 ㎡ academic project Time: 2020.2-2020.5 (year 4) Individual work Surveying, previous research, concept, design and all the drawings individually Instructor: Guan Kaixiong guankaishung@hust.edu.cn Li Xuan When Covid-19 broke out in Wuhan in 2020, all the existing orders of the city were broken and soon the basic urban function was pause. Why the epidemic had so serious result on the city, is somewhat due to the horizontal city ill, for it's wildspreading and hard to control. In the future, city will have ability to deal with the emergency, if it is the vertical mode. The design is mainly reflecting on the epidemic to the city and create a complex vertical city mode. The mode has 4 points: education and management are at the essential position; selfsufficient mode; the circulation of clean energy and the quick actions dealing with emergency. author: Da Manjie

Students stay at home by using electronic device to continue their class, because too many students in a class are easy to being infected.

People are isolated in their home. The only thing they can do to fulfill their social network is contacting others by video chat, otherwise they will look at outside.
