JUSTICE SHAHABUDDIN AHMED PARK Completed (2017-2021)

GENERAL NOTES In the year of 2017, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) came up with the idea to develop and renovate different types of open spaces and green parks and playgrounds across the northern part of Dhaka City. Vitti Sthapati Brindo Ltd. was selected as the Design Consultant and I was given the responsibility to coordinate the projects with the different groups like clients (DNCC), different consultants, and user groups along with the contractors. From the conceptual sketches to completion and inauguration during Covid-19 Pandemic, I was the Project Architect from ‘VITTI’ under the guidance of Architect Ishtiaque Zahir Titas who is one of the Prominent and Internationally recognized architects and urban designer from Bangladesh. Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park is located in one of the important areas in Dhaka at Gulshan. This park is naturally adorned with so many various kinds of trees. But the main problem was not to have any proper space for the user group. In the design, the main concern was to organize the proper spaces with the organization without cutting any trees. The total master plan is properly designed according to user groups. Space for senior citizens, women, teenage groups, children play and some common spaces have been designed in the entire master plan. There are five types (Brick Pavement, Concrete Block Pavements, Soft Pavements, Wooden Plunks Walkways, and Permeable Water Concrete Pavements) of walkways including footpaths have been designed for the people for walking in the park in the pollution-free environment. Physical exercise yard along with prayer space and modern toilet facilities have been designed. Two Ghats have been resigned and one has been demolished due to less durability in structure. The Park is gifted with a water body. But almost dead. We resigned its bank along with beautiful waterside walkways in the lower level close to water. In the upper level, there are also walkways along with a bi-cycle track for cyclists. Women Seating Area including dedicated toilet facilities with proper and separate toilets have been designed. Café Counter with reading space has been incorporated in the design so that people of all ages can easily come, refresh themselves and enjoy being here. The first green amphitheater has been designed here in the area of almost so that people of all ages can have a breathing space in the park. A performance deck and a water fountain (40m) have been also designed here with the amphitheater. Three viewing decks have been designed for the enjoyment of the natural beauty of the park from the upper level. Six kiosks have been incorporated for the teenagers for gossip places with friends and families. There is also children's passive equipment for the toddlers along with the seating provisions for the guardians. Landscaping items like different types of flowers, water plants, flower beds have been designed as landscaping items for the Gulshan Shahabuddin Ahmed Park. A proper drainage system has been designed for the surface water and a rainwater reservoir tank has been designed for harvesting rainwater. Two gateways with modern shading were also designed in the park along with the drinking water fountain, public toilets facilities, and Trash Bin. The overall image of the park creates a nature-friendly eco-design for the people of Gulshan and the surrounding area.

The 12 quality criteria from Jan Gehl for the good design of public open spaces are divided into three main sections:

+ What is PARK ? A planned environment that typically correlates with open space, allocated or reserved fully or partially, for the purpose of public recreation.Could be comprise of natural elements; or manmade elements; or combination of both Why is PARK important? Act as “green lung” for the city and a focal point that breaks up the monotony of concrete jungle. Promote healthy lifestyle that can influence the increase of quality life To counterbalance the harsh reality of a hectic urban life.

The first section deals with the obligatory precondition to stay outside at all: Protection.

The second section of the criteria deals with the preconditions to spend more time in a public space: Comfort.

The third section of criteria refers to amenities in public spaces: Enjoyment.

The 12 quality criteria from Jan Gehl for the good design of public open spaces are divided into three main sections: Public space must be the place where citizenship r ights are guaranteed for everybody and differences are respected and appreciated. (Charter of Public Space, para. 3).

PUBLIC SPACE

Conceptual Sketch Source: Global Toolkit for Public Space

The Charter of Public Space is based on a wide and inclusive concept of citizenship that goes beyond its legal definition. All, in their capacity as users, are "citizens" and have the same rights and duties with regard to public space. (Charter of Public Space, par.4) When citizens coincide with the inhabitants they have the right to be involved through participatory processes in the creation and management of public space. (Charter of Public Space, par.5)

BASHABO PLAYGROUND Completed (2016-2019)

GENERAL NOTES In the year of 2015 Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) had launched a Mega Project named ‘Jol Shobuje’ Dhaka to upgrade, develop and greening 31 park and playgrounds in the southern part of the Dhaka. Bashabo Playground is a community level project under Jol Shobuje Dhaka Mega Project where 03 leading consulting firm along with other 12 firms and more than 80 architects have been involved throughout the design and construction processes. My Employment Organization ‘Vitti Sthapati Brindo Ltd.’ was one of the three leading consultants and I was the Project Co-coordinator, Manager, Project Architect and Urban Designer as well the guidance of Principal Architect Iqbal Habib who is a prominent Urban Designer and Activist in the south Asia. Starting from day one with the site visit and completion with handed over I was responsible for design concept and idea generations, preparing architectural drawings and construction drawings for the site and supervision of the site at a regular basis. Bashabo Playground located in the middle of the Bashabo Area which is in the Khilgaon Zone (zone-02) of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) of which serves four major communities from north, south, east and west bashabo. The main problem of this playground was disorganization. The main playground was 3 feet below the road level. So in the monsoon the field became flooded with water. There was no proper drainage or water irrigation system. There was also a concern issue which was the fencing. The existing heavy boundary walls blocked the interconnection from inside to outside. Firstly, we have come with the idea to transparent the fencing so that people could enjoy the beauty of green spaces and various sports from the outside of the playground. It creates a dialogue between inside and outside. Then we designed the playground raised 3’ from the road level with proper drainage system. The drainage system was internationally followed system all over the world. There are different layers of the playground and the perforated pipes are laid below coved with geotextiles. The top layers and semi-top layers are filled with local sand called ‘Sylhet sand’ and Lumi Soil. Then planted grass roots densely. So even if it rains heavily, it will take 15-20 minutes to drainage all the waters of the field into the sauces drain to city drain. There has been designed a entry gate house by keeping the existing trees. Different functons has been organized in the entry gate house as a supporting functions like community space, dressing room, Chit-chat space, toilet for male, female and diff.able people. Walkways has been designed at the periphery with the two secondary entries for the local neighborhood people. Some ancillary facilities like trash bins within a shorter distances have been accommodated along with the drinking water facilities. The seating benches have also been accommodated in the entry gate house for the user group. Overall, the design of Bashabo Playground has changed the lifestyle of the Bashabo Community people.

The main design concept was to enhance a connection between the present life and the afterlife according to Muslim belief. By designing a prayer hall, people such as family members, friends, and relatives have been allowed to come to pray to God for those who have left. According to Muslim Belief, those who have left can be in a better position after death or in the afterlife if people can pray for them. God will grant those prayers immediately. Prayer Provision in the Graveyard can establish a spiritual connection to the afterlife and those who are already there would be blessed by the prayers.

MONUMENT Central monument erected for martyrs needs to be restored to re-establish it’s sanctity and integrity. The height of the monument as intended by original designer needs to represent the sacrifice of the martyrs and needs to be merged with surrounding trees height and landscape. The material also requires restoration and overhauling to re-enact the true expression of brick.

PLAZA Plaza surrounding the monument needs enhancement to enrich user experience and appropriate integration of green and urban furniture. Plaza must provide an approach to monument in order to emphasis it’s significance and complement the scale along with the axis.

DESIGN CONSIDERATION ADDITION OF LIBRARY & PRAYER SPACE To make people more aware of the history and its significance, a library and documentation archive is needed. Access to information regarding martyred intellects, subsequent aftermath and trial of the collaborators will complement the intention of the memorial complex.

SERVICE As thought of a complex of monument, public plaza, green park and library, the masterplan should have planned service network for water management and maintenance

The significant four walls are manipulated with their standing height that will help to merge the monument portico with the surrounding landscape. The central protico of the plinth has height that is one-fourth of the new height of the walls that creates better better aperture for the visitors and helps to esbablish the prominence of the monument. The continuous waterfall at the lower portico cover the raised plinth along with the subtle yet strong presence of the central portico wall signifies the enormous sacrifice and the merging of the structure with context and landscape demonstrates the sacrifice of the intellectuals for their homeland.

MONUMENT PORTICO WALLS WITH PROPOSED HEIGHT MERGE WITH THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE. ADDITIONAL HEIGHT OF THE MONUMENT HELPS TO EXTEND THE APERTURE OF THE PORTICO FOR THE VIEWERS.

The proposed renovation for the monument portico and master plan of Shoheed Buddhijibi Smritishoudho comprises of proposed ideas, like better pavement connection across the site that will encourage mass people more in order to get acquinted more with the monument and know more about our history. The overall size and height needs to be modified so that the the portico can be more prominent and remind us about it’s sancity. In the proposed design the height of the four walls hae been increased in a way that mergers more with the surrounding landscape. Proper design works at the plaze will enrich the experience for the visitors and can play an important role for urban integration. COTTA STONE AT PLAZA

Red brick is a historic contextual construction material here in Bangladesh. In this complex, at different regions (connected paves, four walls of the monument, plaza) of the complex are designed with red bricks. Along some edges at the plaza the junctions lines are designed with brick headers which demonstrates the attention to details for materials while designing the complex.

At the plinth of the monument portico, there is a watersheet in front of the portico and at the beneath of the waterfall there is a stone layer which creates a sense of sublimity when people reach the top of the plinth to pay tribute to show thier respect for the martyred intellectuals.

White marble has been used at the stairs and plinth of the plaza and this is the only place where this white marble has been used that differentiates the plaza from the other regions of the whole complex.

While designing the landscape for the complex, green spaces were prioritized that helps to achieve ecological sutainability. Proper vegeration and plantation idea have been proposed to enhance the user experience at this open green spaces. No existing trees will be hampered for the rennovation work of the complex, moreover addtional seasonal trees have been proposed for plantation.

In order to create an axial approach at plaza aiming at the center of the monument portico, cotta stone has been used throgh the axis within the brick paved area. The prefered color cotta stone is green.

The drainage networking system has been proposed in a way so that there will be no water logging all across the whole complex and the monument area. There are two existing artificial water bodies in the complex and these water bodies are incorporated in the drainage system. The rainwater from the monument plinth and the adjacent plaza will pass through the city drainage at the east side of the side and the artificial waterbody at the west. Rainwater coming from the resto of the area will pass to the

artificial water body at south and there is aso provision through connected internal drainage pipe to pass the water to the city drainage. There are pits at critical locations to collect the water and the connected internal drainage pipes are designed to pass the water within very short time so that there will be no water logging.

DHANMONDI EIDGAH PREMISE Proposal (2017)

Dhanmondi Eidgah is the oldest surviving Mughal monument in Dhaka city, which was built by Mir Abul Qasim in 1640 CE

SITE LOCATION The Dhanmondi Shahi Eidgah (Bengali: ধানমণ্ডী শাহী ঈদগাহ), also known as Mughal Eidgah (Bengali: মমাগল ঈদগাহ), is located in Saat Masjid road, in Dhanmondi residential area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Eidgah was built in 1640 CE during the Mughal era and has been in use for Eid celebrations since then. The structure is a listed archaeological site of the Department of Archaeology and has historical, architectural, and heritage values. It is an example of Mughal architecture. Conservationist architect Abu Sayeed M Ahmed wrote, "This Eidgah is the oldest surviving Mughal monument in Dhaka city. There is no second one with the architectural forms and features similar to it.“ The Mughal Eidgah is a monumental structure built during the Mughal Empire. the Eidgah was built by Mir Abul Qasim, a Diwan of Shah Shuja and builder of Boro Katra. The Mughal subahdars and diwans living in this land used to come to the Eidgah for Eid prayers.

EXISTING SITE CONDITION

HYDRO-ECO PARK Under Construction (2021)

DHAKA CITY Dhaka is home of about 22 million people and account for up to 35% of the country’s economic activity Also, with numerous people migrating from different part of the country to Dhaka every day, inequality in economic condition exists acutely and have impacted the city, even in use and protection of public spaces.

AREA 2,161.17 km2 POPULATION 21,741,000 DENSITY 29,105/km2

THE RIVERS SURROUNDING DHAKA Like many other major cities, Dhaka also started along the Buriganga River. The city is now situated on the confluence of the four main rivers, Turag, Balu, Dhaleshwari, and Buriganga. Geographically, the city has a higher ground on the southern edge of an alluvial old terrace in a low-lying region. In a way, expansion of the city remains a difficult and complex procedure as planning needs to house structure as well as protection of water bodies.

TRANSFORMATION OF CITY URBANIZATION WITH RIVERS AROUND Rapid urbanization and ever increasing force of daily migration to the capital city create a unique challenge to shelter people and at the same time protect nature.

Urbanization Flood Flow Area Low Lying Area River & Canals Roads

DHAKA’S FLOOD VULNERABLE AREAS Apart from seasonal flooding, moderate/heavy rainfall could create water stagnation. This emphasises the importance of protecting retention areas.

Map showing Dhaka's flood vulnerable areas due to moderate/ heavy rainfall. Flood Flow Area

CONTEXT Digun mouza Retention Pond

Kallyanpur Retention Pond

Hatirjheel

Dhanmondi lake

Very few canals and lowlands remain today. Once known as the Venice of the East is now regularly flooded due to damaged and disconnected water channels. Water logging on the eastern part of the city easily clears out to the eastern rivers and canals. However, on the west edge, a north-south embankment has obstructed any access surface water to be discharged to the western rivers. Thus, additional pumps are used to pump out extra water to keep this area livable. The redevelopment of the lowlands and water retention ponds on the west will help retain excess flood water and create a hydro-ecological balance in the area. Kallyanpur Pond is such an important water Retention area the near the west embankment of the city.

INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT OF HATIRJHEEL

To save the city from flooding and ensure the removal of excess water, Dhanmondi Lake, and Hatirjheel has already been developed as protected retention area integrated with public space and green area.

DHANMONNDI LAKE

KALLAYANPUR RETENTION POND Kallayanpur retention pond area remains one of the critical lowlands to be saved from unplanned growth & and encroachment. It is crucial to redevelop it and reconnect it with the surrounding water network to mitigate flooding risk and to give back t o nature and people a hydro-ecological urban balance.
