Vorwort Architekturwissen und –wissenschaft – Export mit Benefit Trotz der Internationalisierung, welche die Architektur in den vergangenen hundert Jahren erfahren hat, wird ihr Charakter durch ihr regionales und kulturelles Gepräge sowie ihr immobiles Wesen dominiert. Ihre Prinzipien hingegen sind verallgemeinerbar und übertragbar auf andere Räume und Kulturen, genauso wie man in anderen Teilen der Erde, Strukturen und darin enthaltene Prinzipien vorfindet, die sich vorteilhaft in unsere Bau- und Planungskultur einbinden lassen. Dieser Prozess des Exports und Imports von architektonischem Know-How mit allem was dazu gehört wurde an unserer Fakultät in den vergangenen Jahren sehr erfolgreich betrieben. Dies geschah auf vielfältige Art und Weise, richtete sich in alle Himmelsrichtungen und wurde sowohl synthetisch als auch analytisch praktiziert: Seien es Low-Budget-Bau-Projekte für Afrika oder Tibet, um der unterprivilegierten Bevölkerung vor Ort ein Minimum an zeitgemäßen sozialen Einrichtungen wie Sporthallen oder Kindergärten zu schaffen, oder Analysen zum Urbanismus und dessen Historie in asiatischen Metropolen bis hin zur Konzeption und Planung einer Baufakultät im

Kongo in Afrika. In allen Fällen eine Win-Win-Situation: Wir - und damit ist nicht allein unsere Architekturfakultät gemeint, sondern darin sind alle Architekturforscherinnen und –forscher der industrialisierten und hochzivilisierten Welt, die in ähnlicher Weise mit anderen Kulturen kooperieren, eingeschlossen – bringen uns in einen internationalen Wissens- und Erfahrungsaustausch ein.

Wir importieren und zeigen den Umgang mit industrialisierter Bautechnik im Hinblick auf Material und Verarbeitung und lernen selbst Jahrhunderte alte Bauverfahren und ihre Vorzüge kennen. Wir erfahren städtebauliche Selbstbildungsprozesse in Entwicklungsländern und bringen unsere Planungs- und Kommunikationsmethoden ein. Wir setzen digitale Aufnahme- und Messwerkzeuge ein und lernen die Bau- und Stadt- und Infrastrukturen vergessener Kulturen kennen. Lohnende Schritte wie die Beiträge dieses Heftes eindrucksvoll beweisen.

Preface The Knowledge and the Science of Architecture – Export with a Benefit Despite the internationalization, which architecture has experienced over the past hundred years, its character is dominated by its regional and cultural imprint as well as its immobile nature. On the other hand, its principles can be generalized and transferred to other areas and cultures. Just as one comes across structures and their inherent principles in other parts of the world, which can be integrated advantageously into our building and planning culture. In the past years, our Faculty has undertaken this import and export of architectural know-how and its accessory parts very successfully, in a variety of ways, in all four directions, and practiced synthetically as well as analytically: Be it low-budget building projects for Africa or Tibet, providing the underprivileged population with a minimum of modern social facilities such as sports halls or kindergartens , or analyses of urbanism and its history in Asian metropolises, or the conception and planning of a Faculty of Construction Engineering in the Congo in Africa. A win-win situation in all cases: We – meaning

not only our Faculty of Architecture but including all researchers of architecture in the industrialized and highly civilized world who cooperate with other cultures in the same way - get involved in an international exchange of knowledge and experience. We import and demonstrate the usage of industrialized building technology in terms of material and processing and learn about centuries-old construction methods and their advantages. We experience urban self-education processes in developing countries and introduce our planning and communication methods. We use digital recording and measuring tools and become acquainted with building structures, urban structures and infrastructures of forgotten cultures. Rewarding steps as the contributions of this booklet impressively prove.

I hope you get some interesting insights and derive a lot of pleasure from the study of this Series A issue.

design-develop-build is an educational program, that links academic architectural education with practical doing: Students develop, design and then build with their own hands – houses for education and culture in structurally weak areas of South Africa. During the past 7 years, Kindergartens and school buildings were created in this way.

Guga Theatre – the current project is a children’s and youth theater in Langa, Cape Town, and after four completed projects, in which cooperation with local universities was intended, it is the first in which a cooperation finally becomes real. Bachelor and Master students participate on part of RWTH Aachen while only first-year students are being involved on part of the University of Cape Town at this time.

The fact that the project team is made up of students from different semesters makes it possible to approach the project from different standards and levels of learning. While for the RWTH students, the main focus is on the complexity of the entire process, the linking of design and realization, the students of the UCT start their studies in the current year with a hands-on workshop, they produce the cement stones for the theater floor – as a continuation of a previous hands-on project. In a separate part of the regular ‘architectural building technology’ course, ideas and prototypes

for the theater’s seating will be developed on the basis of theoretical and practical studies.

Participation – not only understood as the involvement of local workers but also including the academic world and real stakeholders, in order to make the projects effective beyond the short period of the construction phase, through the transfer of knowledge of social contexts, typology, material and construction.

An intended subject for a future cooperation is an in-depth material research on local construction materials. The practical research on facade construction with local and/or recycled materials, which already has been taken up, should be continued.

In further steps, the conception of a common one-year curriculum could be developed into a structural cooperation.

The whole project is financed thanks to diverse firms, institutions and private sponsors from Germany who support scientific and social projects in an international context.

They not only help to provide the German students and the concerned community with valuable experiences but also support the local students. In South Africa, such financing options are only available with international support.

design-develop-build ist ein Lehrprogramm, welches die akademische Architekturausbildung mit der praktischen Umsetzung verknüpft: Studierende entwickeln, entwerfen und bauen eigenhändig - Häuser für Bildung und Kultur, in strukturell schwachen Gebieten Südafrikas. In den letzten 7 Jahren sind auf diesem Wege diverse Kindergärten und Schulhäuser entstanden.

Guga Theatre - das aktuelle Projekt, ist ein Kinder- und Jugendtheater in Langa, Kapstadt. Nach vier realisierten Projekten, in denen eine Kooperation mit lokalen Universitäten angestrebt wurde, ist es das erste, in dem eine Zusammenarbeit realisiert wird. Von Seiten der RWTH Aachen nehmen Bachelor- und Masterstudierende teil, während von der University of Cape Town zu diesem Zeitpunkt nur Erstsemester Studierende involviert werden. Die Zusammensetzung des Projektteams aus verschiedenen Semestern ermöglicht eine Beschäftigung mit dem Projekt auf unterschiedlichen Maßstabsebenen und Lernniveaus. Während für die Studierende der RWTH die Komplexität des gesamten Prozesses, die Verknüpfung von Entwurf und Ausführung im Vordergrund stehen, starten die Studierende der UCT ihr Studium im laufenden Jahr mit einem hands-on Workshop, sie produzieren die Zementsteine

für den Theaterboden - als Weiterentwicklung eines früheren hands-on Projektes.

Im Rahmen des regulären ‘architectural building technology’ Kurses werden in einer eigenständigen Lehrveranstaltung anhand von theoretischen und praktischen Studien Ideen und Prototypen für die Bestuhlung des Theaters entwickelt.

Partizipation versteht sich in dem Zusammenhang nicht nur als Einbindung lokaler Arbeitskräfte, sondern auch der akademischen Welt und realer Interessenvertreter, um die Projekte auch über die kurze Zeit der Bauphase hinaus, durch Transfer von Wissen über gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge, Typologien, Materialien und Konstruktionen, wirksam zu machen.

Ein angestrebtes Thema für eine zukünftige Kooperation ist eine vertiefte Materialforschung zu lokalen Baumaterialien. Die bereits begonnene praktische Forschung zum Fassadenaufbau mit lokalen, und/oder recycelten Materialien soll fortgeführt werden.

In weiteren Schritten könnte die Entwicklung eines gemeinsamen einjährigen Curriculums zu einer strukturellen Zusammenarbeit entwickelt werden.

It equally attracts resident children and young people, local artists, and international tourists. For the community of Langa, Guga S’Thebe is a unique chance to experience their art and culture in an international dialogue. As an extension of the cultural center, the Guga Theatre is supposed to offer adequate space for the rehearsal and staging of the many performance activities. In order to keep costs down, the building is built almost entirely from recycled materials. The multi-functional theater space for up to 200 people is built by a closed rectangle made up of sea freight containers. The staggered containers, high-cube on the ground floor and standard containers upstairs, create a loosely enclosed space

with a clear hight of around five and a half meters.

This ring of containers takes on functions like backstage, soup kitchen, control room, dress circle and recording studio. The structure of the roof is based on a locally easily available and cost-effective nail plate truss, which is widely used in South African industrial construction. The wooden trusses which are inclined to each other create a spatially repetitive structure. This V-structure characterizes the main view of the theater. The structure remains visible in the interior.

The entire outer skin is covered with prefabricated claystraw modules for winter and summer heat insulation.

Used pallets and recycled wood planks from the local fruit industry are used to produce wooden frames and the claystraw mixture is stamped into the formwork. The single

panels are attached to the container with steel squares.

The modular system allows prefabrication and also to distribute the group to different work stations.

The outer skin of the theater – the facade – is also formed from boards recycled from fruit crates and recycled bricks.

The interior is dominated by the appearance of the partially cut ship containers.

Only the decorative floor from self-made cement tiles and some few floor-to-ceiling acoustic panels are added.

The Guga Theatre will open in October 2014 as part of a “World-Design-Capital 2014“ event and will be presented to the City of Cape Town.

It is our biggest student-construction project so far and can only be realized by the commitment of all the people involved.

Die Finanzierung der vielfältigen wissenschaftlichen und sozialen Projekte im internationalen Kontext ermöglicht eine Bereicherung nicht nur für deutsche Studierende und der vom Bauprojekt direkt betroffenen Gemeinschaft, sondern auch für die lokale Studentenschaft. Solche Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten sind in Südafrika ohne die internationale Unterstützung nicht zu leisten.

Guga Theatre Guga S’Thebe ist ein Kulturzentrum, welches nach dem Ende der Apartheid in den 1990er Jahren in Langa - dem ältesten Township Kapstadts - entstanden ist. Es zieht gleichermaßen anwohnende Kinder und Jugendliche, lokale Künstler, und auch internationale Touristen an. Für die Gemeinschaft Langas ist Guga S’Thebe eine einzigartige Chance, ihre Kunst und Kultur in einem internationalen Dialog zu erfahren.

Als Erweiterung des Kulturzentrums soll das Guga Theatre angemessenen Raum zum Probieren und Vorführen für die vielen Performance Aktivitäten bieten. Um die Kosten niedrig zu halten, wird das Gebäude fast ausschließlich aus recycelten Materialien gebaut.

Der multifunktionale Theaterraum für bis zu 200 Personen wird durch ein geschlossenes Rechteck aus auf Abstand gesetzten Seefracht-Containern gebildet. Durch die versetzte Stapelung von High-Cube-Containern im Erdgeschoss und Standardcontainern im Obergeschoss entsteht im Inneren ein locker umschlossener Raum mit einer lichten Höhe von rund fünfeinhalb Metern. Der Container-Ring nimmt Funktionen wie Hinterbühne, Suppenküche, Regie, Zuschauerbalkon und Tonstudio auf.

Die Struktur des Daches basiert auf einem vor Ort leicht verfügbaren und kosteneffektiven Nagelplattenbinder, welcher im südafrikanischen Industriebau weit verbreitet ist. Durch die zueinander geneigten Holzbinder wird eine räumlich repetitive Struktur erzeugt. Diese V-Struktur prägt die Hauptansicht des Theaters. Das Tragwerk bleibt im Innern sichtbar.

Für den winterlichen und sommerlichen Wärmeschutz wird die gesamte Außenhaut mit vorgefertigten Lehm-Stroh-Modulen verkleidet.

Von gebrauchten Paletten und wiederverwendeten Holzbrettern aus der lokalen Obstwirtschaft werden Holz-Rahmen gefertigt, in die das Lehm-Stroh-Gemisch in die Schalungen gestampft wird. Über Stahlwinkel werden die einzelnen Paneele an die Container befestigt. Das modulare System ermöglicht eine Vorfertigung und ein Aufteilen der Gruppe in verschiedene Arbeitsstationen. Das äußere Kleid 14

Im Inneren dominiert die Anmutung der teilweise aufgeschnittenen Schiffscontainer. Lediglich der Schmuckfußboden aus den selbstgefertigten Zementfliesen und einige wenige raumhohe Akustikpaneele werden hinzugefügt.

Das Guga Theater wird im Oktober 2014 im Rahmen einer Veranstaltung zum „World-Design-Capital 2014“ eröffnet und der Stadt Kapstadt übergeben.

Die Realisierung dieses bislang größten Selbstbauprojektes ist nur durch die vielen beteiligten Unterstützer möglich geworden.

In vielen Städten Europas werden historische Innenstadtquartiere geschützt und in ihrem Bestand gesichert. Dies gilt auch für das Stadtviertel Beyoglu von Istanbul, welches über Jahrhunderte hinweg rund um den Galata-Turm gewachsen ist. Die heute ablesbaren städtischen Zusammenhänge, bestehend aus groß- und kleinbürgerlichen Haustypen mit ihren jeweiligen Parzellenstrukturen, existieren seit der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, einer Zeit in der die territorialen Strukturen der osmanischen Stadt in kleinteiligen Privatbesitz untergliedert wurden. Im späten neunzehnten Jahrhundert hat sich Beyoglu zu einem dichten Innenstadtquartier entwickelt, welches in den Jahrzehnten nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg stark vernachlässigt wurde.

Der Stadtteil von Beyoglu, der insbesondere von jüngeren Bevölkerungsschichten bewohnt und genutzt wird, erlebt derzeit eine Renaissance. Aufgrund seiner sehr vielfältigen Nutzungsarten, seiner Topografie und seiner Nähe zum Ufer des Bosporus gehört Beyoglu heute zu den faszinierendsten Stadtteilen von Istanbul.

Obwohl der baukulturelle, historische und stadträumliche Wert von Beyoglu schon längst erkannt ist, wurde in vergangen Jahrzehnten die Sanierung des gefährdeten Altbaubestandes durch hochkomplexe Eigentumsverhältnisse blockiert.

Genau hier setzt unser Projekt an. Gegenstand der partnerschaftlich, von der Bahçesehir Universität Istanbul und der RWTH – Aachen durchgeführten Sommerakademie waren die Quartiere der Stadt Istanbul. Quar-

tiere sind Teile eines Ganzen. Durch sie werden Einteilungen im Körper der Stadt vorgenommen. Innerhalb von Quartiersgrenzen entstehen Nachbarschaften und Strukturen, die das Alltagsleben ihrer Einwohner rahmen. Quartiere zeichnen sich – besonders dann, wenn Menschen gerne in ihnen leben – durch ihre innere Kohäsion, ihren sozialen und baulichen Zusammenhalt aus. Der drohende Verlust der Istanbuler Innenstadtquartiere bildete den aktuellen Anlass für eine Suche nach angemessen Strategien zur Stärkung und Ergänzung historisch gewachsener Strukturen.

Unser türkisch-deutsches Austauschprojekt, welches unter dem Arbeitstitel „Struktur und Ereignis“ startete, wurde Ende Mai 2013 von den Istanbuler Ereignissen eingeholt. Die erschütternden Bilder zeigten, wie

In many European cities, historic quarters in the city centers are protected and conserved.

This is also true for Istanbul’s Beyoglu quarter, which has grown around the Galata Tower over the centuries. The urban links which can be read today, consisting of upper and middle class house types with their associated plot structures, have existed since the first half of the 19th century, a time in which the structures of the Ottoman city’s territories were characterized by small private properties. During the late 19th century, Beyoglu developed into a dense inner-city quarter, and was strongly neglected in the decades after the Second World War. Inhabited and especially frequented by the younger population, the Beyoglu quarter is currently experiencing a renaissance. Today, Beyoglu’s many different attractions, its topography and its proximity to the banks of the Bosphorus, make Beyoglu one of the most fascinating quarters of Istanbul. Although the building cultural, historical and architectural value of Beyoglu has long been recognized, in recent decades the restoration of endangered historic buildings was blocked by the highly complex ownership structures.

This is exactly where our project starts. The Summer Acade-

my, jointly organized by Bahçesehir University Istanbul and RWTH Aachen University, focused their research on the quarters of Istanbul. Quarters are parts of a whole. They subdivide the body of the city. Neighborhoods and structures develop within the boundaries of quarters, framing the everyday life of their inhabitants. Quarters are characterized by their internal cohesion, their social and structural coherence - especially when people like to live in them. The imminent loss of Istanbul’s city center quarters triggered the search for adequate strategies to strengthen and complement historically grown structures. Our Turkish-German exchange project, which was launched under the working title „Structure and Event“, was overtaken by the events which took place in Istanbul at the end of May, 2013. The shocking images showed how the public area between Gezi Park and Taksim Square turned into the burning stage for an escalating confrontation. We saw pictures of civic protest and police violence; pictures of barricades and their brutal removal; pictures of a fragile tent city occupied by protesting citizens who wanted to show their resentment of the confrontational stone quad which is planned for the northern edge of Taksim Square. It was not just a vehement battle for the future of urban areas which broke out 17

der öffentliche Raum zwischen Gezi-Park und Taksim Platz zum brennenden Schauplatz einer eskalierenden Konfrontation wurde. Uns erreichten Bilder von bürgerlichem Protest und polizeilicher Gewalt; Bilder von Barrikaden und ihrer brachialen Beseitigung; Bilder einer fragilen Zeltstadt, in der aufbegehrende Bürger Quartier bezogen haben, um ihrem Unmut gegen ein trutzig-steinernen Gevierts zu protestieren, das am Nordrand des Taksim Platzes entstehen soll. Entlang der Demarkationslinien zwischen Park und Platz entbrannte nicht nur ein vehementer Kampf um die Zukunft städtischer Räume.

Unter den Einwirkungen von Tränengas und Wasserwerfern weitete sich der Konflikt aus. Aus der beharrlichen Forderung nach Mitwirkung an städteplanerischen Entscheidungen wurde eine landesweite Grundsatzdebatte über den Wert der freien Meinungsäußerung, der Pressefreiheit und des Demonstrationsrechts.

Auch wenn der Konflikt längst über den Ort des Anstoßes hinausgewachsen ist, bleibt sein Ausgangspunkt von großer Bedeutung für die urbane Zukunft von Beyoglu. Denn am Anfang des Konflikts stand ein architektonischer Entwurf. Projektiert wurde die Restitution einer osmanischen Artilleriekaserne, die 1806 erbaut wurde. Abgerissen wurde sie im Jahre 1940, um Platz zu schaffen für die Umsetzung eines Plans aus der Feder des französischen Stadtplaners Henri Prost. along the demarcation lines between park and square. The conflict escalated under the impact of tear gas and water cannons. The insistent demand for participation in urban planning decisions developed into a nationwide fundamental debate about the value of the freedom of expression, of the freedom of the press and of the right to demonstrate.

Even though the conflict has long outgrown the starting point, its origin remains of great importance for the urban future of Beyoglu. For, the beginning of the conflict was an architectural plan. The re-establishment of a former Ottoman artillery barracks which was built in 1806 was planned.

It was demolished in 1940, in order to make room for the conversion of a plan, penned by the French urban planner Henri Prost. Gezi-Park and the layout of Taksim Square follow a modern vision of the city, which was developed on behalf of Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic. Guided by hygenic and aesthetic ideas, Henri Prost planned the layouts of public squares, parks and boulevards according to Parisian models – specifically, the Ottoman Empire had to make way for their realization. Significantly, now the current government of Turkey under Prime Minister Erdogan wants to subject Henri Prost’s visions to a revision. Thus, the project at Taksim Square stipulates the elimination of Gezi Park, the reconstruction of the Ottoman barracks, the leveling of the Atatürk Cultural Center in Taksim Square, the construction of a new mosque in its place and a new underground traffic infrastructure. There is no mistaking the symbolic and historic political implications of this revision. As a tangible sign of urban modernization, the Taksim Square is a site of political demonstrations, as well as a place of remembrance for the enthusiasm felt around the beginnings of the Turkish Republic. If Taksim Square and Gezi Park were remodeled according to the plans of the incumbent Mayor Kadir Topbas, it would set an inner-city precedent. Because so far, pressure from the real estate in19

besondere Bauten des osmanischen Reichs weichen mussten.

Bezeichnender Weise will nun die aktuelle Regierung der Türkei unter Premierminister Erdogan Henri Prosts Visionen einer Revision unterziehen. So sieht das Projekt am Taksim Platz den Rückbau des Gezi-Parks, den Wiederaufbau der osmanischen Kaserne, die Beseitigung des Atatürk- Kulturzentrums am Taksim Platz, den Bau einer neuen Moschee an dessen Stelle und eine neue, unterirdische Verkehrsführung vor.

Unverkennbar ist die symbolische und geschichtspolitische Tragweite dieser Revision. Als sinnfälliges Zeichen städtischer Modernisierung ist der Taksim Platz ein Ort politischer Kundgebungen wie auch ein Ort der Erinnerung an den Gründungselan der türkischen Republik. Würden Taksim Platz und Gezi-Park entsprechend den Plänen des amtierenden Bürgermeisters Kadir Topbas umgebaut werden, so wäre dies ein innerstädtischer Präzedenzfall. Denn bislang entlud sich der immo-

dustry was directed towards the peripheral areas of the city.

It was here, on the edges of the rapidly growing metropolis at the Bosporus, that during the past two decades countless shopping centers sprung up surrounded by towering residential and office towers. With few exceptions, the inner-city quarters of Istanbul, i.e. the regions of the historic peninsula, the area around the Galata Tower and the nearshore districts on the Asian side of the city, were rarely the objects of extensive urban redevelopments. What could this urban redevelopment look like? How do new houses have to be designed, so that they can be added to the existing districts like familiar acquaintances? How can the existing districts be renewed and partially replaced without giving

up the main architectural features let alone the rituals of daily life? These and many other questions were posed at the beginning of our research in Istanbul. The detailed observation of the existing districts formed the first step on the path to possible answers. Groups of Turkish and German students collected data on the layout of the plots and of ownership, on the topography, the building types, the forms of usage, the building substance and the public spaces at five different locations in the city. The investigations were accompanied by an extensive on-site program, consisting of city walks, lectures on urban and social history, on perception themes and urban restructuring. It became clear that in a city of short commutes, living, working and

bilienwirtschaftliche Druck auf die peripheren Lagen der Stadt.

Hier, an den Rändern der rapide wachsenden Metropole am Bosporus, entstanden in den vergangenen zwei Dekaden unzählige, von hoch aufragenden Wohn- und Bürotürmen umstellte Einkaufszentren. Bis auf wenige Ausnahmen waren die innerstädtischen Viertel von Istanbul, d.h. die Gebiete der historischen Halbinsel, das Umfeld des Galata-Turms und die ufernahen Bezirke auf der asiatischen Seite der Stadt, kaum Gegenstand eines umfänglichen Stadtumbaus. Wie könnte dieser Stadtumbau aussehen? Wie müssen neue Häuser konzipiert werden, damit sie wie gute Bekannte dem bestehenden Quartieren hinzugefügt werden können? Wie lassen sich die bestehenden Quartier erneuern und in Teilen ersetzen, ohne dass dabei die wichtigsten Strukturmerkmale oder gar die Rituale des 22

Alltagslebens aufgegeben werden müssen? Diese und viele andere Fragen standen am Beginn unserer Untersuchungen in Istanbul. Den ersten Schritt auf dem Weg zu möglichen Antworten bildete die eingehende Lektüre der vorgefundenen Quartiere. Gruppen von türkischen und deutschen Studierenden führten an fünf Orten der Stadt Erhebungen zu den Parzellenstrukturen, den Eigentumsverhältnissen, der Topographie, den Bautypen, den Nutzungsformen, der Bausubstanz und den öffentlichen Räumen durch. Begleitet wurden die Recherchen durch ein umfangreiches Programm vor Ort, bestehend aus Stadtspaziergängen, Vorträgen zur Stadt- und Sozialgeschichte, zu Fragen der Wahrnehmung und des Stadtumbaus. Deutlich wurde dabei, dass in einer Stadt der kurzen Wege Wohnen, Arbeiten und Erholung aufeinander bezogene Größen bilden, die man im besten Fall auch innerhalb eines Gebäudes

wieder finden kann. Die entscheidenden Qualitäten entstehen hierbei durch Strukturen, welche auf die jeweiligen Kontext bezogen sind, ohne jedoch deren weitere Entwicklung zu verbauen.

Ausgangspunkt unseres Projekts war ein zehntägiger Workshop im Herbst 2012 an der Bahçesehir Universität Istanbul, der durch die großzügige Unterstützung der STO-Stiftung ermöglicht wurde. Die vorläufigen Ergebnisse unserer türkisch-deutschen Zusammenarbeit haben wir im Folgenden zusammengeführt.

Sie bilden die Grundlage für weitere studentische Projekte, für konkrete Vorschläge zum behutsamen und nachhaltigen Stadtumbau Istanbuls, den wir durch nun vorliegende Studie befördern möchten.

The decisive qualities develop based on structures, which are related to the particular settings, without hindering their further development.

The starting point of our project was a ten-day workshop in the fall of 2012 at the Bahรงesehir University Istanbul, which was made possible by the generous support of the STO Foundation. In the following analysis, we have brought together the preliminary results of our Turkish-German collaboration. They form the basis for further student projects, for specific suggestions for careful and sustainable urban redevelopment of Istanbul, which we want to further by the present research at hand.

Summer School: Theodosian Walls and Urban Agriculture A first teaching format on cultural heritage and urban development

Cultural heritage is one of the 5 collaborative research fields of the Faculty of Architecture. It has a long tradition in the faculty’s research and teaching.. With the creation of the UNESCO Chair for World Cultural and Urban Landscape to which several of the faculty’s chairs contribute, the expertise of RWTH Aachen University on cultural heritage receives additional recognition on international level. Research and teaching on cultural heritage strive for internationalisation in the coming years. As a first teaching activity in this context the Chair of Landscape Architecture has organised the Summer School “Theodosian Walls and Urban Agriculture” in May 2013.

The Theodosian Landwalls have been built in 413 AD to

defend the capital of the Byzantine Empire. 2013 was the year of their 1600st anniversary. Since 1453 the walls were never attacked again and lost their defensive function. They have nevertheless persisted in the urban fabric of Istanbul and played an important role in shaping the city. Since 1985 the Walls are protected as UNESCO World Heritage site.

Besides their importance as a cultural heritage of the highest category the walls and their surroundings are an important element of the daily life of Istanbul. The use of the former fortifications for market gardening of vegetables is a living tradition that has roots which may be several hundreds of years old. Combined with contemporary parks the market gardens, or ‘bostans’ in Turkish, are the biggest green open

space of the densely built and populated historic peninsula of Istanbul. Besides their importance as a component of the UNESCO heritage site they thus have a considerable potential for the future social, environmental and touristic development of Istanbul as a metropolis of the 21st century.

After several hundreds of years of continuity the future of the Theodosian Land Walls and their surroundings is on a critical path today. Traffic and infrastructure facilities are constantly consuming the open space surrounding the walls. Traditional neighbourhoods undergo an urban renewal of considerable impact on the historic urban fabric.

Summer School: Theodosianische Landmauern und urbane Agrikultur Ein erstes Lehrformat für Kulturerbe und Stadtentwicklung Cultural Heritage ist eines der fünf Verbund-Forschungsfelder der Fakultät für Architektur. Es hat eine lange Tradition in der Forschung und Lehre der Fakultät. Die Leistungen der RWTH auf dem Gebiet des Kulturerbes erhielten spätestens durch die Einrichtung des UNESCO-Lehrstuhls für Stadt- und Kulturlandschaften im Welterbe, zu dem mehrere Lehrstühle der Fakultät beitragen, auch auf internationaler Ebene Anerkennung. Die internationale Zusammenarbeit im Bereich Cultural Heritage wird in den nächsten Jahren immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen und neue Lehrformate erfordern. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat der Lehrstuhl für Landschaftsarchitektur im Mai 2013 die Summer School “Theodosianische Landmauern und Urbane Agrikultur” organisiert.

Die Theodosianischen Landmauern, 413 n. Chr. als Verteidigungsanlage für die Hauptstadt des byzantinischen Reiches gebaut, feierten im Jahr 2013 ihr 1600jähriges Bestehen. Da die Mauern 1453 zum letzten Mal angriffen wurden, haben sie ihre Verteidigungsfunktion längst verloren. Im Stadtgefüge von Istanbul haben sie weiterhin Bestand und spielten eine wichtige Rolle in der Stadtentwicklung. Seit 1985 sind die Mauern als UNESCO Weltkulturerbe geschützt.

Abgesehen von ihrer Bedeutung als Kulturerbe der höchsten Kategorie, sind die Mauern und ihr Umfeld auch ein wichtiger Bestandteil des täglichen Lebens von 24

Theodosian Walls

Istanbul. Die Nutzung der ehemaligen Befestigungsanlagen für den Anbau von Gemüse ist eine lebendige Tradition mit Jahrhunderte alten Wurzeln. Zusammen mit zeitgenössischen Parks entlang der Mauern bilden die Gemüsegärten, oder türkisch ‘bostans’, die größte Grünfläche der dicht bebauten historischen Halbinsel von Istanbul. Neben ihrer Bedeutung als UNESCO- Weltkulturerbe, bergen sie somit erhebliches Potenzial für die künftige soziale, ökologische und touristische Entwicklung Istanbuls als Metropole des 21. Jahrhunderts.

Nach mehreren Jahrhunderten der Kontinuität ist die Zukunft der Theodosianischen Landmauern und ihres Umfeldes heute auf einem kritischen Pfad. Der Freiraum rund um die Mauern wird mehr und mehr von Verkehrs- und Infrastruktureinrichtungen verzehrt und die traditionellen Viertel werden einem Prozess der Stadterneuerung unterworfen, der erhebliche Auswirkungen auf das historische Stadtgefüge hat. Selbst Erneuerungsstrategien, die mit dem Welterbestatus vereinbar erscheinen, wie die Schaffung von Parkanlagen im Vorfeld der Mauern, gehen wenig sensibel mit dem Kulturerbe der ‚bostans‘ um und nehmen dem Welterbe damit die Einbindung in die lokale Kultur und Tradition.

Dabei könnten die Landmauern gerade wegen dieser starken Verwurzelung in der lokalen Kultur eine wichtige Rolle für Istanbuls städtebauliche Zukunft einnehmen. Die Mauern könnten nicht nur der lokalen Bevölkerung als grüne Infrastruktur dienen, sondern die Stadt auch für den Tourismus attraktiver machen.

Das Ziel der internationalen Summer School für Masterstudierende bestand darin, eine räumliche Vorstellung davon zu entwickeln, wie dies in der praktischen Umsetzung aussehen könnte. Als Partner für dieses Projekt konnte der Lehrstuhl für Landschaftsarchitektur der RWTH Aachen die Kadir Has Universität und die Okan Universität gewinnen, die uns in Istanbul mit den notwendigen Arbeitsräumen ebenso wie in organisatorischen Dingen unterstützten. Zusätzliche Fachkompetenz brachten der RWTH Aachen UNESCO- Lehrstuhl für Stadt- und Kulturlandschaften im Welt- erbe (Dipl.-Ing. Michael Kloos) und der Lehrstuhl für Stadtbaugeschichte (Dr.-Ing. Karsten Ley) ein. Schließlich schlossen sich die Istanbul Technical University und die Bilkent University Ankara der Summer School mit ihren Studierenden und unterstützenden Lehrkräften an.

36 Masterstudierende der Architektur, Landschaftsarchitektur, Stadtplanung und Innenarchitektur setzten sich vom 20. – 25. Mai 2013 intensiv mit den Theodosianischen Landmauern auseinander.

Die Studierenden arbeiteten mehrere vielversprechende Ansätze aus, die Mauern und bostans als Einheit betrachten. Sie zeigten, dass das Welterbe der Mauern und der bostans als nachhaltige, grüne Infrastruktur für Istanbul gleichzeitig Althergebrachtes 26

side the walls, show little sensibility for the local cultural heritage of the ‘bostans’ and cut off the links between the World Heritage and the local culture and traditions.

It is however precisely these strong roots in the local culture that provide important opportunities for the role of the Land Walls in Istanbul’s urban future. The Walls can develop towards a green infrastructure for the city, serving as well the local population as the touristic valorisation of the area.

To address these issues and to develop a spatial vision of how it could be put into practice RWTH Aachen University’s Chair of Landscape Architecture took the initiative to organize an international summer school for master students. We were joined in this effort by Kadir Has University and Okan University offering the workspace and organisational support in Istanbul. Additional expertise was brought

to the summer school by RWTH Aachen University’s UNESCO Chair for World Cultural and Urban Landscapes (Dr. Michael Kloos) and Chair for History of Urbanisation (Dr. Karsten Ley). Finally Istanbul Technical University and Bilkent University Ankara joined the Summer School with students and supporting teaching staff.

36 Master students of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Interior Design have been intensively working on the Theodosian Land Walls from 20th to 25th May 2013.

The students elaborated several promising approaches thinking the wall and the bostans together. With the results of the Summer School a tender crop began to grow, indicating that the world heritage of wall and bostans could serve as a sustainable green infrastructure for Istanbul while protecting the old, at the same time offering new opportu-

nities for recreation, tourism, food policies and neighborhood empowerment.

Only a few days after the Summer School, bulldozers set out for a bostan area near Yedikule fortress.

Here, adjacent to the wall, market gardens have been maintained for centuries. Before destruction, farmers and their families utilized the wall’s surrounding area, since it was not covered with houses due to fortification reasons. In this location, pipes bringing water from the northern mountains to the wall’s moat could be as well used for irrigation. The farmers cultivated radish, parsley and other vegetables and sold them to the local markets.

As the students learnt during the summer school, the bostans have over time become a part of the Theodosian wall’s history, constituting both a tangible heritage (gardens and endemic cultivars) and an intangible heritage (tradition 27

erhalten und neue Möglichkeiten für Erholung, Tourismus, Ernährung und die Stärkung der Wohnviertel schaffen könnte.

Nur wenige Tage nach Beendigung der Summer School machten sich Bulldozer auf den Weg in ein bostan-Gebiet in der Nähe der Yedikule Festung.

In diesem an die Mauer angrenzenden Gebiet wurden bereits seit Jahrhunderten Gemüsegärten unterhalten. Bauern und ihre Familien nutzen vor der Zerstörung das unbebaute Umfeld der Mauer. Leitungen, die ursprünglich den Graben der Mauern mit Wasser aus den nördlichen Bergen speisten, dienten nun zur Bewässerung der Gärten. Die Bauern bauten Rettiche, Petersilie und andere Gemüsearten an und verkauften sie auf den lokalen Märkten.

Die Summer School machte den Studierenden bewusst, dass die bostans im Laufe der Zeit zu einem Teil der Geschichte der Theodosianischen Landmauern geworden sind, greifbares Kulturerbe (Gärten und endemische Sorten) ebenso wie immaterielles Kulturerbe (Tradition des Anbaus, Vermarktung und Kochen).

Die Bulldozer brauchten nur wenige Stunden, um die Felder, Wege und Kanäle zu zerstören und als sie abzogen, nahmen sie eine uralte Kultivierungstradition mit sich.

War die Summer School also vergeblich? Ganz und gar nicht. Tatsächlich hat die Zerstörung der bostans nur gezeigt, wie dringlich die dort behandelten Themen sind.

Und andere bostans existieren noch und benötigen Schutz. Wir haben gehört, dass im Stadtteil Fatih die bostans durch einen Park ersetzt werden sollen. Welch eine Ironie. Kann doch gerade ein Park-Konzept in idealer Weise die urbane Agrikultur der bostans mit anderen Freizeitangeboten verbinden. Allerdings hat man uns wissen lassen, dass die Menschen gegen die Pläne der Kommune demonstriert haben. Ist das jemals zuvor in Istanbul oder anderswo passiert: Menschen setzen sich für alte Felder ein, statt für einen modernen Park? Offensichtlich gedeiht aus unserem Samen eine zarte Pflanze. Wir sollten alle zurückkehren und uns weiter um sie kümmern.

Die Erfahrungen der länderübergreifenden und interdisziplinären Summer School zeigen, wie wichtig es ist, Verbindungen herzustellen und Synergien zu nutzen. Das Kulturerbe ist eines der wichtigsten identitätsstiftenden Elemente, nicht nur ein Thema für die rückschauende Forschung, sondern auch als kultureller Transfer für zukünftige Gestaltungen. Die Summer School ist ein ideales Format, um diese Ideen zu wecken, denn sie geht über die Grenzen der Grundlagenforschung hinaus und lässt direkt vor Ort neue Sichtweisen entstehen. Ausgehend von dieser ersten positiven Erfahrung, sollte eine jährliche Summer School zu Kulturerbe und Stadtentwicklung das wesentliche Instrument zur Verknüpfung von Forschung und Lehre im Verbund-Forschungsfeld Cultural Heritage an unserer Fakultät werden.

The bulldozers only needed a couple of hours to destroy the fields, paths and canals. As the bulldozers vanished they took with them a cultivating tradition going back hundreds of years.

The summer school, all for nothing? Not at all. Indeed, the destruction of the bostans has shown the urgency of the addressed topics. And there are other bostans left still needing protection.

We heard the district of Fatih is going to construct a standard park replacing the bostans. What an irony. As the students have pointed out, it is exactly a park concept, which can in ideal ways combine the urban agriculture of bostans with other recreational uses. However we were also let known that people demonstrated against the municipalities’ activities. Has that ever happened before in Istanbul or

elsewhere: people engaging for some old fields instead of a modern park? Obviously our tender crop is still growing.

We can all come back and take care of it.

The experience of the transnational and transdisciplinar Summer School shows the importance of establishing links and synergies. Cultural Heritage is one of the main elements that shapes our identity, but is not only a subject for retrospective research, it needs to be integrated to the future we shape. A Summer School is an ideal format to create these ideas by pushing the limits of groundwork research to the creation of new perspectives on the site. Starting from this positive first experience the organization of yearly Summer School on Cultural heritage and Urban development should become a main instrument of linking research and teaching in the collaborative research field cultural heritage 29
