Rover Rescue Fireworks...Nothing to Celebrate for Your Pup!

The summer is full of parties and get togethers, often jazzed up with celebrations of fireworks. As mesmerizing as the lights may be to the human eye, a large percentage of the canine population is terrified of the exploding noises. It is extra important to make sure dogs are safe and secure inside on such nights. Wearing collars with identification is a good extra precaution, as well as having a dog microchipped and ensuring the information is attached to the correct phone number and address. We may not be able to erase the displays, but there are steps we can take to make the situations more bearable.

Dogs’ ears are quite sensitive, so any white noise needs to be set at a higher volume to balance the fireworks.

Fans, air conditioners, and relaxing music tend to work well. Having a smaller place such as a crate oftentimes increases the sense of security, or settling down as far away from the noise as possible such as in a basement.

Having the company of other dogs or trusted humans helps instill addition comfort and safety. Getting a dog out before and after the blasts to do their business helps avoid amplifying encounters. Attempting to take a scared animal out in the middle of the cacophony will only result in more fear and accomplish nothing.

Many pet owners turn to homeopathic methods of soothing dogs such as CBD oil, thundershirts, or essential oils. For more serious cases, veterinarians may prescribe low doses of sedatives. To give the substance time to work as well as ensure it is consumed, any meds or supplements should be given before the start of the event. The same holds true for thundershirts, as overhandling a dog in such an overstimulated panic state can be dangerous and make the dog more uncomfortable.

As much as we attempt to alleviate the stress of fireworks, some dogs simply have no tolerance. If a dog still is in visible distress despite trying different methods to calm them, it may be less stressful for everyone to avoid the situation completely. This will require more effort in more densely populated areas, but a journey to the boondocks to escape the show is sometimes worth it. If a dog loves car rides, a relaxing drive in the distance with music playing can be sufficient. The health and well-being of our canine friends should always be a number one priority. Some pups are sent into full blown panic, and until silent fireworks become a widespread reality, it will be an important, reoccurring issue. It does not have to be a catastrophe, help is possible.

The Power of Positive Thinking Saying Goodbye to Your High School Graduate

What a bittersweet time for a parent. It is so exciting to see your high schooler go off into the world and begin a new journey, yet that journey may be so far away from home. Whether your child is going away to college far, or staying within state, a new transition begins for everyone. This new transition will change the energy within your home and within your lives.

Even when your child is happy to begin this new college phase in their life it doesn’t come without nervous energy and some uncertainty thoughts. As parents, we too are faced with the what ifs. My daughter will be going off to college in August. Our first born! We are so excited for her yet so sad she is leaving the home. We will miss her terribly and her beautiful smile and happy attitude brings us so much gratitude. We will miss that. And since we are going through this, we know so many other parents are going through the same transition. So, we came up with a few tips to help you tackle the good-byes and make it a positive smooth transition as much as possible.

1. Saying goodbye is never easy so don’t wait. Waiting until the very end to say goodbye to friends, family and loved ones can be too difficult. Try and hang out with your child as much as possible.

Also, let your child hang out with the people they will miss the most as often as they can until they must leave. Here might be a good time to share your own goodbye experiences.

2. This is an extension of #1. Don’t feel insulted if your teen doesn’t want to spend as much time with you as they do their friends or boyfriend/girlfriend. I keep telling myself, she will indeed miss us when she’s gone so let her make her plans where she feels the most comfortable right now.

3. Planning an outing or two. If your teen is up for it, plan an outing or a special dinner with them. You will get their undivided attention and candid conversation. If they aren’t up for this revert to #2.

4. Be honest with how you feel. My daughter knows how very sad I am for her to leave but she also knows how excited I am for her to be able to have this amazing experience. She has prepared herself for many facetime calls and multiple texts, or at least one a day to put me at ease. Laying out how I feel and what I may need from her while she is gone has set expectations for us both.

She knows how much I love her and how her absence will really be difficult on me. Our world is super connected so it should be easy for us to connect on a regular. This puts my mind at ease.

5. Send them off with a memory or two. Lots of pictures of what makes them happy to fill their dorm room with. In addition to this, my husband and I have created a “wishes for the graduate” jar. During her graduation party we will have a jar filled with advice from friends and family. When she’s having a home-sick day or just feeling defeated the little notes within this jar are sure to pick her spirits up.

If your teen is like mine, they have spent the last 12-13 years with the same group of friends and school acquaintances. Some aspects of their routine were boring, exciting, painful, or insightful. The uncertainty of a new routine, in new places with new people can feel exciting and nerve wracking all at the same time for them and for us parents. Tearful goodbyes remind of us of just how lucky we are and just how lucky we will be when we reunite. I am looking forward to hearing new stories from my daughter. I can’t wait to hear about the new people in new places that bring her so many different emotions. It’s part of life and I just must keep reminding myself of that. So, in your goodbye, just know that I am thinking about you and your teen as well as they embark on their new journey. And we embark on our own.

Healthy Morsels, II Coming Out of a Covid Mindset

I had a realization this past week. I was preparing to host an engagement party for my son and I was really struggling. It freaked me out because I’ve hosted many parties over the years with no problem at all.

I couldn’t seem to get myself to move or think about things that were needed. Then I realized what was going on. All those social parts of me haven’t had to work for the past 18 months or so and they were nowhere to be found. My inner world was still in Covid lockdown and didn’t really want to come out and play or do any work at all. Once I realized what was going on I was able to get my social parts going and everything turned out fine. I tell you this because there are so many ways Covid has affected us and we might not even be aware of them all. We have not had to stretch ourselves in many ways and yet we have had to deal with some very stressful things over the past year and a half. It’s been a crazy time on so many levels. I have realized that I hold vastly different beliefs than many of the people around me.

This has been difficult to navigate as well. What a difficult time we are in. You know, just because we are trying to get back to “normal” doesn’t mean it will happen overnight. I’ve been amazed at how complicated the past few years have been for so many people including myself. It can take grace and

compassion to navigate these difficult times.

Self-care is also very important. Try to eat well, exercise or move your body in ways that feel good, get out in nature, enjoy the summer weather and treat yourself and others well. Keep an open and curious mind to all that you are feeling and to what others may be experiencing as well. We need more compassion and less fear and anger. I am very concerned about the amount of anger and fear I am witnessing but I hold hope.

So, if you find you are struggling with something, anything for that matter, do not be too harsh on yourself or others. It will take some time to bring ourselves out of the Covid mindset. The return to a “normal” world has been rather abrupt and it may take some time for our inner worlds to catch up.

Be kind to yourself and others. We are in some major transitions right now and not everyone handles transitions well. Take the time you need and hold compassion. We sure could use more of that in our world.

From replacing meals with smoothies to drinking only juices all day there’s always a new health trend.

We all know that staying hydrated is important for health. It’s often recommended that you drink eight glasses of water per a day. A new trend suggests adding extra ingredients to water to boost health benefits.

This is called “detox water” which is said to help your body get rid of toxins, improve your energy levels and even help you lose weight. You can make detox water at home in lots of different ways, using any combination of fruits, vegetables and herbs that you like. Because it’s made by infusing flavor, rather than juicing or blending, detox water contains very few calories.

Making detox water at home is very simple, all you need is water and a selection of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Simply chop up you ingredients and add them to hot or cold water depending on your preference.

If you are making a cold drink you can leave the detox water in the fridge for 1-12 hours to allow the flavors to infuse more deeply. Be sure to remove the ingredients after this time though, so they don’t begin to decompose.

Not only does infusion add a pleasant flavor to your regular glass of water, but it can truly be a blessing in disguise for your health.

Drinking detox water can help food to pass through the gut and prevent constipation. Even mild dehydration can affect mood, concentration and energy levels. One study looked at adults who consumed less than 41 oz. water per day.

When they increased their water intake to 85 oz. per day, they were happier, had more energy and felt calmer. If you aren’t drinking enough, increasing your water intake could improve your mood and give you more energy.

Lastly just like regular water upping your intake of infused water can help you lose weight by temporarily increasing your metabolism and making you burn more calories.
