Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2014 Collection by Coal A collection of headwear inspired by the world around us, from the city streets to the mountain peaks and everywhere in between. Coal is the product of our collective inspiration. No matter what you do or where you do it, Coal will be there with uncompromising quality and style. In this season’s offering you will see a variety of colors, more prints and patterns, and even more custom patches and detailing.
History
Mission
In 2002 a group of friends got together to start a company that reflected their shared vision: headwear should be more than an accessory. At the time, hats, knit beanies, and the like were little more than something companies slapped their logo on. We saw an opportunity to provide the market with accessories that took fit, fashion, and function equally seriously, and looked at headwear as an extension of you, your identity and your lifestyle. Design was—and still is—the main factor of every style. Not only from the color, yarn / material type, or subtle branding, but to the fit and look of every style when worn. We strive to create the best possible headwear out there. It’s all about design, uncompromising attention to detail, and superior components.
Coal was founded on the belief that headwear is more than an accessory. It’s part of you, your identity, and your lifestyle. We build this idea into each of our designs by using quality materials and exacting detail, and crafting styles that are as unique as you are.
This logo throughout our catalog indicates a Coal Considered style. Considered pieces are classically inspired with a modern twist, where no detail is overlooked. Speciality Materials: USA Wool Felt Our US-made wool felt hats are produced by a manufacturer that has been around for over 100 years, perfecting the art of making wool felt fedoras, cloches and other highly crafted headwear. The wool they use comes from Texas and goes through a rigorous process where the raw wool is first formed into loose cone shaped bodies. From there the cones are treated with pressure and hot water repeatedly. This pressure and heat combination begins to felt the wool fibers, and the felt becomes tighter and denser as the process continues. Once the bodies are ready for use they are blocked by hand, the brims trimmed and shaped, and the final trim, lining and labeling applied. For spring we use a special lighter-weight felt for a nice, summery feel.
Organic Cotton Our organic cotton is a wonderfully versatile yarn that is made into both beanies and woven hats. The cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides or other agrochemicals.
Recycled Cotton This yarn is repurposed waste from the manufacturing process: a combination of scraps and clippings. Because the color of the original material is in the fiber, it causes less dyes and chemicals to be used in the process of repurposing the material into new yarn.
Genuine Panama Our genuine Panama hats start as hat bodies hand woven from the Toquilla fiber in Ecuador. The hat bodies are tightly woven, and once in the US expertly blocked, producing a beautifully crafted hat. The combination of fine craftsmanship and high quality materials produces a hat that is excellent protection against the hot rays of a sunny day. The Panama hat is great for sunny weather use, but not ideal for rainy conditions.
