Lunchtime in Huntington Beach, California—1989. I write the word down on a napkin—Bonfire. After a few bites of consideration I cram the napkin into my pocket—time to go back to work at my job making and selling snowboards in So Cal. As I work, I think—I like it, Bonfire. Before long I’m making stickers and t-shirts with simple graphics of people and soldiers with their heads on fire, the word ‘Bonfire’ always centered underneath the artwork. All logos are straight off my Sears typewriter—all designs straight off the top of my head. 20 years ago I was an ex-pro rider, tired of ski wear, fresh out of film-school and done with a career of being one of the first (and maybe worst!) Pro-riders in snowboarding. But I knew one thing. That napkin I just crammed into my pocket felt like it could be a lifetime of fun. And while 20 years isn’t a lifetime—it’s a damn good start. USING THIS CATALOG Snowboarding is about taking a different line—doing tricks, taking hits, jibs and rails that are new because of the way you do it. For that reason this catalog provides you with a few different ways to ride through the product line. Traditionally, buyers review the line on a style-by-style basis and then choose their favorite colors, styles and prices. This option remains available to you in the ‘By Style’ pages, which immediately follow the photo gallery that starts when you flip this page. Another way through the line is to simply focus on the colors, performance level and price points you like for jackets–—then pair with the perfectly priced pant to merchandise just how you like it. FEATURED ARTISTS & COLLABORATIONS ANDY MUELLER Andy Mueller was raised in the mid-west on a healthy diet of BMX, skateboarding, music and magazines. At an early age, Andy became addicted to the art of image making and photo taking. In 1993, Andy founded OhioGirl Design, a small design/photo/film studio. In 1997, Andy started “The Quiet Life”, as an outlet for purely creative ideas, with a few friends from within OhioGirl. Andy currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, two cats, bird, and a new baby boy.
MISATO SUZUKI “I find interesting patterns and shapes often in nature, color and animals, simple things that exist within our daily life. In this collection, I wanted to use vivid colors and doodle-like line quality to create playfulness and energetic motion. I imagined how shooting stars, the moon and sunshine can sparkle on white snow. A “Cosmic Wonder in the Snow.”
RESEARCH STUDIOS Research Studios has a strong foundation of typographic design, it is at the heart of the studio’s process, from strict typographic systems and typographic branding solutions to experimental typography. The studio set up the experimental typography publication FUSE, which for each issue invited four designers to create an experimental typeface, and an associated poster. This experimental thinking is at the core of our creative process. Research Studios, typography work is regularly featured in the design press and books. Research Studios is considered a benchmark for innovative design. Space Blocks Pattern and the Men’s Embroidery was done by Lynsey Atkin: Lynsey Atkin graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2006. She subsequently worked in-house for the London College of Communication before moving to the London branch of Research Studios. Lynsey has worked with clients including Island/Universal Records, Harrods, Ford University of the Arts London i-D and The Barbican. The Women’s Embroidery was done by George Sheldrake: George Sheldrake graduated with a bachelor of design from COFA Sydney Australia in 2002. In Sydney she worked on print, packaging and magazine projects, before being lured by the bright lights of Europe. Moving first to Hamburg and then on to London, where she has lived now for three rainy years. In London she worked in magazines before joining Research Studios. George has worked as a designer in a variety of disciplines for clients such as D&AD, Ikea, Grazia Magazine, Pol Oxygen magazine and The Barbican.

KIJI Mr. Kiji is a New York based illustrator and designer. Although his formal education is in Industrial Design he has been highly influenced by a childhood immersed in comic books and as a teen by the Tibetan Art of Thangka painting as well as various Camouflage patterns. “The pattern I developed for this years apparel is an updated floral print. In redeveloping the pattern for Bonfire I wanted to restructure the artwork so that it read both as art but as some overall graphic pattern. I reconstructed the work into a diagonal grid. The imagery is referenced from several sources. Some of the flowers are based off Warhol’s “Flowers” series. The central small closed blossom is based off traditional Tibetan Thangka artwork. Additionally some of the stretched flowing organic shapes are based on Buddhist floral motifs I scanned and distorted with a photocopier. All in all I hoped to make thematically layered piece that visually evoked a range of texture, energy and movement. I’m really happy with how it turned out.”

SUPPORT FOR SNOWBOARDING Pipe To Pipe Pipe to Pipe is the longest standing summer contest on Mt. Hood in Oregon. Every summer we gather the pros and ams and everyone shreds together at Windells Snowboard Camp, competing for cash and prizes. Follow it up with a skate contest and barbecue and you have the only event of the summer that invites the public into the private world of camp and everyone hangs out and has a good time. Once a halfpipe contest, the rail jam has grown into the premiere summer contest for the up and coming pros of tomorrow.
Buckmans Rail Jam The Annual Buckmans Rail Jam event is an urban style rail jam built from the ground up in the 6,000 sq. ft King of Prussia Mall parking lot. Snow and rails are trucked in. An 18’ scaffolding tower is built. The event features over 125 grass roots riders.
Halloween Booze Cruise For the third year in a row Bonfire and Salomon snowboards have hosted a boat party in Portland, OR. The Portland Spirit, a boat that navigates the Willamette river, host the annual costume cruise. Retailers, buyers, shop employees, industry heads and other freaks of nature come from all over the NW to partake in the festivities to launch the season. It’s our way of thanking everyone for supporting Bonfire and Salomon. What to expect every year: a boat cruise, flowing drinks, dancing and product tosses. See you next year!
Movie Tour With the support of Monster Energy, Bonfire tours the US, Europe and Canada to promote rider projects like Leanne Pelosi’s Runway Films. Each tour stop features product giveaways, rider signings, good music, friends and fun. Thanks to everyone who attended, we raised over $3,000 for Boarding for Breast Cancer in the US this year. Backyard Bang - USA Salomon Snowboards, Bonfire and the Art Institute of Portland hosted the 2nd Annual Backyard Bang on November 22nd in the streets of Portland, OR. Am riders from the Northwest and beyond competed for cash and prizes on a super clean rail set up fabricated by Snowboy Productions and judged by Nick Dirks, Josh Dirsken, Tim Windell, and Jesse Burtner. The 2008 men’s winner was Austin Sweetin, Megan Ginter winning it for the women and Best Trick Winner Tyler Verrigan. Malamute Challenge For fourth consecutive year La Malamute continues with its unique team format, bringing together the best riders from Spain, France and Italy all vying for the “winner take all”, 5000 euro prize at La Molina on February 21st. Capturing the action, photographers from around Europe will be quietly competing for the Malamute photo contest.
