SPINE: THE NEW
HELMET
Our helmets have made a long journey before they can hit the stores and slopes. The new Spine’s journey to Chile and New Zealand, where it was put to the test by our athletes, was something very special though. Joi Hofmann told us about this helmet and why it is the perfect helmet for freeriders. ALPINA: Joi, you have had the chance to test the helmet for several weeks while freeriding in New Zealand.
What are its three main attributes?
JOI:
Lightweight, well ventilated and a very cook look.
ALPINA: In rough conditions “well ventilated” can become a problem. Did you feel like that with the SPINE? JOI:
No. You can easily close the ventilation with one touch so you never get too cold. The system is so easy,
it even works while riding.
ALPINA: A helmet always needs to work in combination with ski goggles. How did that work for you? JOI:
I had the BIG HORN with me. That’s a very cool combo in terms of looks, but also worked extremely well. I was really
surprised that the goggles didn’t mist up even when we climbed short distances. The ventilation of goggles and helmet
really is perfectly coordinated.
ALPINA: So you even wear the helmet for ascends? JOI:
Not always, but for shorter distances, yes. If the helmet is lightweight and ventilation works well, it doesn’t annoy you.
ALPINA: So the bottom line is rather positive or would you have a suggestion for what we could improve? JOI:
You designed the SPINE really well. It is comfortable to wear, you have a really good feeling because you can adjust
it so well and it looks very cool.

TECHNOLOGIES Ski helmets can save lives, and have now become a common sight on the slopes. The figures speak for themselves: the percentage of skiers wearing helmets at the start of the 2014/15 winter season was 75-80%. This proportion rose to around 85% after Michael Schumacher’s accident. A helmet can never provide 100% protection, but statistics clearly show the positive benefit of wearing a helmet: prior to Dieter Althaus’s accident, the proportion of head injuries sustained was around 11%, but by the winter of 2013/14 it was down to 7.2%. All ALPINA helmets meet the EN 1077 quality standard. Yet it is always our aim to develop and optimise our helmets to a level that goes beyond that standard in terms of safety, ergonomics and comfort. For years now ALPINA has been analysing the diverse demands arising from different anthropometric features and optimising products for them to provide a perfect fit for each and every individual.
ERGONOMICS-TECHNOLOGIES ERGO3
ERGO³ allows the helmet to be adjusted so that it fits the head accurately. This involves altering the volume of the helmet, not its circumference. A ratchet locking system allows one shell of the helmet to be finely adjusted to fit around the head. This results in greatly improved comfort and an enhanced feeling of safety.
RUN SYSTEM ERGO SNOW
ALPINA ski helmets rely on the time-tested RUN SYSTEM, a flexible head adjustment system with a central rotatable control knob. The top-end model has two large pads to the left and right of the redesigned control knob that distribute pressure. The large control knob is made of a two-component mix that grips well and can be perfectly operated even when wearing ski gloves.
RUN SYSTEM CLASSIC
The classic for optimal fit: Thanks to the control knob at the back of the head the helmet can be adjusted to the head in a flash and will reliably remain where it belongs.

3D-FIT
The 3D-FIT SYSTEM adds five-stage height adjustment to the Run System at the rear of the head. This enables the helmet to be adjusted even more precisely for an individual fit, increasing comfort and enhancing the wearer’s feeling of safety along with the snugness of the fit.
CUSTOM FIT
The CUSTOM FIT SYSTEM is a further development of the time-tested RUN SYSTEM. The inclination of the retaining bracket at the back of the head on which the practical control knob for width adjustment sits can be adjusted and thus optimally adapts to the back of the head.
ERGOMATIC
Proven a hundred-thousand-fold and used in all ALPINA ski helmets: Our famous strap buckle with a red push button and multi-step automatic locking mechanism. ERGOMATIC can be operated when wearing ski gloves – the strap can be loosened while using the ski lift and tightened again before the downhill run – and is prevented from opening on its own in a crash.
Y-CLIP
A helmet can only protect the wearer as effectively as it stays in its optimal position in case of a fall. The retention of the two under-ear straps plays a crucial part in this. ALPINA’s “Y-Clip” system guarantees optimal adjustment with millimeter-accuracy – easily and in a matter of seconds.

SAFETY-TECHNOLOGIES HI-EPS
The inner shell of every ALPINA helmet consists of HI-EPS (“High Expanded Polystyrene”). These microscopic air pockets absorb the forces that act in an impact and provide the protective damping. HI-EPS allows extra-thin wall thicknesses and slim helmet shapes to be achieved. As HI-EPS absorbs neither water nor perspiration the protective effect is retained for a long time.
CERAMIC SHELL
This impact- and scratch-resistant polycarbonate shell is fitted to all Alpina helmets manufactured using the Inmold procedure. The blank work pieces are shaped at high temperature onto the form of the helmet design and the shells are then pressed onto the helmet‘s Hi-EPS body. The material combines a number of distinct advantages: it is impact and scratch-resistant, it contains UV stabilisers and is anti-static.
INMOLD
INMOLD ski helmets by ALPINA are very light as well as extremely sturdy. This is achieved by a production process in which the helmet’s polycarbonate upper shell is fused with the EPS granulate under high heat and pressure. The result is an inseparable bond between the upper and lower shells across a large area.
HARDSHELL
Hard shell helmets have an impact-resistant ABS or polycarbonate outer shell on top of the EPS inner shell. This combination makes the helmets extremely tough and ensures perfect insulation against the cold.
HYBRID
HYBRID technology combines the advantages of INMOLD and hard shell. The bottom part of the helmet consists of a lightweight INMOLD shell that provides good shock absorption, whereas a super-robust hard shell covers impact-absorbing HIEPS material in the upper part of the helmet. Another advantage: The hard shell of the HYBRID construction allows for an extra amount of room to be used for vent holes and channels. Thanks to the large number of vents and channels hybrid helmets, in addition to their plus in safety, score with the best ventilation available on the market.

COMFORT-TECHNOLOGIES REMOVABLE EARPADS
The REMOVABLE EARPADS can be detached in fractions of a second and stowed in the pockets of a ski jacket. When enjoying the snow on a warm and sunny Easter weekend, this feature will allow you to experience an even higher degree of freedom during your ride. And when temperatures drop again, just click the earpads back on.
CHANGEABLE INTERIOR
Freecarve or freeride bonanzas can be sweat-inducing affairs! Especially the head acts as a veritable “heat exchanger.” That’s why ALPINA ski helmets equipped with CHANGEABLE INTERIOR allow you to quickly remove the interior lining, handwash it in tepid soap water, let it dry and simply insert it again.
NECKWARMER
The ALPINA NECKWARMER is pulled down low at the back of the helmet and consists of a comfortable, soft micro-fleece material. This “heat collar” also prevents the neck from being hit by air draft at high speed and Siberian temperatures. Thanks to its clever construction there are no pressure points.
AIRSTREAM CONTROL
Further airstream regulation features the AIRSTREAM CONTROL. Ventilation openings of the helmet can be opened and closed by a sliding mechanism. Perfect climate around your head is guaranteed.
VENTING SYSTEM
Vents in the shell of the helmet efficiently prevent any build-up of heat and provide perfect air conditioning for the helmet and goggles. The air vents in the helmet draw the warm air from inside the goggles and feed it out through the air channels in the helmet. This effect is optimized when used with the matching goggles, so that the air vents in the goggles dock neatly with those of the helmet. This ensures the circulation of air through the goggles and helmet, preventing misting and the build-up of heat.

At Level 2 the acceptable residual force is below 9 kN compared to below 18 kN. In Level 2 protectors the foam is twice as thick and therefore twice as heavy. - We have opted for lightness. The vest is intended to be worn as a first layer of clothing, which means that you barely notice that you are wearing this vest after a short time. Protector foam: - The foam that we use is made by the renowned company SAS-TEC in Germany and is visco-elastic. This is flexible in its normal state and withstands all movements when doing sports. In the case of a fall or an impact, the foam absorbs energy and hardens, therefore ideally protecting the back from injury. It is restored to its original state and can be used many times. - All foams of this type on the market become hard at low temperatures and lose their effect of absorbing the impact energy. The vest should not be stored in a car at night and always be worn under clothes.

GOGGLE TECHNOLOGIES Our most important sensory organ is the eye. Weighing only 7 grams and measuring about 25 millimetres, it provides around 90% of our sensory perception. Our eyes come under enormous pressure during alpine sports, especially skiing, snowboarding and ski touring. For every 1000 metres of altitude, UV radiation increases by up to 20%. In addition to this, snow reflects up to 95% of light, compared with only 6% in grassed areas. UV radiation and winds at speeds over 10 km/h can cause permanent damage to the eye. Our eyes are protected by lashes, the secretion of tears, our eyelids and our blinking reflex. However, additional and full protection can only be provided by ski goggles. They offer protection against UVA, UVB and UVC radiation.

HINGE BAND
Our snow goggles featuring HINGE BAND technology don’t have the goggle strap attached directly to the frame but to movable synthetic hooks on the outside of the frame. This construction provides even better fit of the goggles – especially when they’re worn with a ski helmet.
SKID GRIP
Ski helmets typically have very smooth surfaces. When the skier makes dynamic movements on a trail with moguls or in open terrain conventional goggle straps can easily move out of place, unlike goggle straps using SKID GRIP technology: The special rubber coating on the inside keeps the goggles from slipping.
MAGNETIC LENS
In fog or under blue skies: Snow goggles featuring MAGNETIC LENS technology ensure clear vision! You choose between a brighter bad-weather lens and a darker fair-weather lens. The darker lens is attached to the brighter lower lens where it will stay in place by means of a magnet – until you make it disappear in your pocket when the weather turns again.
RIMLESS
In conventional goggles the structure of the goggles holds the front lens in place, but with the rimless variant it is the rear lens that is secured. This means the frame can be reduced to a minimum allowing bigger lenses and a wider field of vision as the double lens is positioned further forward. Rimless goggles are extremely suitable for powder skiing, as the powdery snow will not collect on the rim of the goggles, impeding visibility. Added to this, they are also unbeatable for style.

LENS TECHNOLOGIES ALPINA snow goggles are equipped with a wide range of different lenses and technologies to match the whole spectrum of possible requirements, from a simple entry-level model to a highly technical top-of-the-range product. Every snow goggle lens made by ALPINA has its own essential quality features, including the basic : • 100% UV-A, UV-B and UV-C protection up to 400 nm • Anti-static Fogstop coating on the inside • Shatter-proof polycarbonate lens • Hard coating, except for mirrored lenses The next grade up is the Doubleflex, a double lens with an air chamber between the two layers that creates a thermal block (a cold bridge) and prevents freezing. : + Thermoblock The Thermoblock principle is applied in all lenses from this model up. Varioflex is a technology which allows the lens to adapt automatically to the weather. The self-tinting photochromic lenses react to visible light, which causes chemical components to open, producing a two-dimensional, shading effect. The process takes place in a matter of seconds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; giving you goggles that are constantly adjusting to match the changing light conditions.

ALPINA FIT-INDEX Find GOGGLES that fit! Along with technical and design features, the top priority when choosing ski goggles is the correct size and fit. ALPINA helps you to make the right choice with the ALPINA FIT-INDEX. HOW DOES IT WORK? The ALPINA FIT-INDEX measures two important facial features: 1. The distance between your eyes (S, M, L) 2. The height of your nose, i.e. the distance from the bridge of your nose to the upper edge of your eyebrows (30, 40, 50) DIRECTIONS: • Position the ALPINA FIT-FINDER at the upper edge of your eyebrows. • Adjust it to the circumference of your head using the adjustment wheel at the back. • Position the wings of the ALPINA FIT-FINDER at the outer edges of your eye sockets. The wings should not interfere with your view when looking straight ahead. • Slide the nosepiece down so that it lightly touches your nose. You can read off your goggle size* from the width scale at the side of the ALPINA FIT-FINDER and the height scale at the top.

OTG OVER THE GLASSES „Over The Glasses“ – the goggles in Alpina‘s OTG range can be worn over prescription glasses. With a particularly large interior volume and special recesses in the frame to accommodate the temples they are the perfect solution for people who wear glasses. As well as the specific OTG goggles, there are other ALPINA goggles with recesses in the frame for glasses. However, with a smaller interior volume, their suitability will depend on the size of the glasses worn, so they are not considered OTG goggles as such. These include: the SCARABEO, PANOMA, PANOMA S, CHALLENGE 2.0, CHALLENGE S 2.0, BONFIRE 2.0 and ESTETICA.

ACC ALPINA offers four different ski goggles within the Alpina Custom Concept: TYROX, SMASH 2.0, PHEOS R and PHEOS S R. For each pair of goggles there is a selection of different brightly coloured headbands to choose from. As delivered, the goggles are fitted with a Multimirror orange lens. There are up to six different spare lenses available to choose from, depending on the model.
