OVERVIEW OF SKI HELMET TECHNOLOGIES

CERAMIC

This is the name for the outer shell of all ALPINA helmets that use INMOLD technology. This thin and light material is extremely break- and scratch-resistant, UV-stabile and antistatic.

HARD SHELL

NECKWARMER

EA combination of an impact-resistant outer shell (ABS or polycarbonate) plus a shock-absorbing and cold-insulating inner shell (EPS) guarantees a maximum of safety.

Neck warmer that is pulled down low on the back of the helmet and made of comfortable, soft micro-fleece.

JET VISION

All ALPINA helmets are ﬁtted with the ERGOMATIC strap buckle. The anti-torsion multi-step locking mechanism can be operated with a single hand and cannot come open in a crash.

AIRFRAME VENTING SYSTEM

The use of special covering foams optimizes the exchange of air inside the goggles . This air circulation dissipates moisture which prevents the lens from fogging.

HI-EPS

The inner shell of all INMOLD helmets consists of HI-EPS (High Expanded Polystyrene). It is made up of a large number of microscopic air pockets which absorb the impact forces that act in a crash. In addition, HI-EPS absorbs neither water nor perspiration.

HIGHVENT VISOR

A specially molded helmet shield ensures targeted air flow and thus optimizes ventilation of the helmet.

INMOLD TEC

In the production process for INMOLD helmets the inner shell is foam-injected underneath the outer shell under high heat. Thanks to the complete fusion of the upper and lower shells INMOLD helmets are extremely stable and very light. In addition, they offer clearly more safety than spot-glued helmets.

To control the air stream, the vents in the helmet can be opened and closed using a sliding mechanism.

EDGE PROTECT

Vents in the helmet shell effectively prevent an accumulation of heat and thus ensure perfect air conditioning.

Y-CLIP

The Y-CLIP joins the front and rear strap underneath the ear. Fine-adjustment is extremely

REMOVABLE EARPADS

Removable ear pads provide a feeling of freedom while riding in warm weather – without sacriﬁce to the protective function. When temperatures drop the pads can simply be attached to the helmet again by means of a clicking mechanism or buttons.

Flexible head adjustment system with large, easy-to-grip control knob made of a twocomponent mix and ﬁtted with two large pressure-distributing pads at the back of the head.

CHANGEABLE INTERIOR

The changeable interior lining can be removed, hand-washed in tepid soap water and simply be inserted again.

The lens that is outwardly curved provides better all-around vision and enlarges the goggles’ interior volume, which optimizes ventilation .

Small flexible plastic ties in the forehead and cheek area of the goggle frame plus a more flexible nose construction allow the snow goggles to adapt ergonomicaly perfect to the wearer’s individual facial shape particularly well – for superior comfort without pressure points!

For some models, it was possible to design the goggle frame in combination with a large panoramic lens to provide all-around vision above the 180 degrees required by the CE standard. Due to this enlarged ﬁeld of vision potential hazards on the slope can be perceived earlier at the sides.

EDGE PROTECT is applied to the helmet’s bottom edges using INMOLD technology – a genuine plus in safety in side-impact crashes and protection against damage in daily use.

VENTING FRAME

Openings on the sides and bottom of the goggle frame allow air to flow into the goggles’ interior to prevent fogging of the lens. The air flow is indirect so that no draft can reach the eyes.

MAGNETIC LENS

Magnetic Lens snow goggles by ALPINA provide clear vision in sunshine and fog: The snow goggles have two lenses with different tinting. The dark fair-weather lens is attached to the brightening lens where it will ﬁrmly stay in place. In bad weather, this extra lens can be quickly detached in a single move.

The goggle is strap is attached to flexible hooks on the outside of the frame. These hooks provide even better ﬁt especially when the goggles are worn with a ski helmet.

OVER THE GLASSES

Goggles with recesses in the frame and sufﬁcient interior volume that allow normal correction glasses to be worn under the goggles.

SKID GRIP

The rubber coating on the inside of the goggle strap prevents the strap from slipping on the ski helmet.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT Ski helmet laws donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist yet in all corners of the world. In some countries, though, helmets are mandatory with certain exceptions. In South Tyrol, for instance, children under 14 have to wear helmets. At Alpina, we invest a lot of time and effort in the continuous further development of our products so that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll enjoy wearing our helmets even when not required to do so by law. Not only the technologies are continually optimized to make the helmets more comfortable but the designs and colors are trendy, too.

Technology

In Friedberg near Augsburg, Germany, the helmets and snow goggles are conceptualized and created from the first sketch through to the finished product. The initial sketches provide the basis for making a cast-resin mock-up. Innumerable dots are then scanned from the surface of this helmet and digitalized in CAD to create a three-dimensional model. Based on the 3D data, our developers are able to optimize the shape and vents. The graphics designers add color to the helmet and off it goes into series production.

We produce our helmets and eyewear in our plants in Lederdorn and Passau where the molds for the new helmet are made based on CAD data. The helmet passes through a number of production steps until it has reached its final stage: from molding, milling, foaming through to decoration and attachment of straps and pads. On our in-house test bench, each model is subjected to various impact, pull-off, and tensile tests in order to be awarded the test seal according to the relevant EN-1077 standard.

HELMET TECHNOLOGIES The technical evolutions over the past decades have made a significant contribution to the helmets no longer being perceived as a burden on the wearer’s head, but that they’re comfortable and light. Ventilation and wearing comfort are key criteria that determine a consumer’s choice of a helmet. Alpina leaves no stone unturned to optimize the helmets and to always be state-of-the-art when it comes to technology.

HYBRID Its HYBRID technology combines the advantages of INMOLD and Hardshell. The bottom part of the helmet consists of a light-weight INMOLD shell that provides good shock absorption, whereas a super-robust Hardshell covers impact-absorbing HI-EPS material in the upper part of the helmet. Another advantage: The Hardshell upper shell of the HYBRID construction allows for an extra amount of room to be used for vent holes and channels. Thanks to the large number of vents and channels hybrid helmets, in addition to their plus in safety, scores with the best ventilation available on the market – an unbeatable team when combined with matching PANOMA snow goggles.

Technology

INMOLD INMOLD ski helmets by ALPINA are very light as well as extremely sturdy. This is achieved by a production process in which the helmet’s polycarbonate upper shell is fused with the EPS granulate under high heat and pressure. The result is an inseparable bond between the upper and lower shells across a large area.

HI-EPS The inner shell of every ALPINA helmet consists of HI-EPS (“High Expanded Polystyrene”). These microscopic air pockets absorb the forces that act in an impact and provide the protective damping. HI-EPS allows extra-thin wall thicknesses and slim helmet shapes to be achieved. As HI-EPS absorbs neither water nor perspiration the protective effect is retained for a long time.

HELMET ERGONOMICS ERGONOMICS IS A TERM FROM THE WORLD OF WORK. The aim of ergonomics is to optimise the working conditions, the work process, the arrangement of the objects needing to be grasped (components, tools and semi-finished products) and the equipment for a particular task in terms of space and time, so that the result of the work is as good as it possibly could be qualitatively and economically and so that the people doing the work are not harmed and do not tire more than necessary. Something that’s paid attention to in the world of work can’t be wrong in the world of leisure. In sport in particular, there are many ergonomic peculiarities, which has led to the emergence of a special area referred to as sports ergonomics. Ergonomics plays a key role in Alpina’s products too, and they are designed to be as physiologically adaptable as possible for each individual who uses them.

New in the 2013/2014 season: Our new 3D-FIT-SYSTEM is a thin strap that runs around the back of the neck and can be individually adjusted in height in five steps – for even better and secure fit.

The CUSTOM FIT SYSTEM is a further development of the time-tested RUN SYSTEM. The inclination of the retaining bracket at the back of the head on which the practical control knob for width adjustment sits can be adjusted and thus optimally adapts to the back of the head.

Alpina ski helmets rely on the time-tested RUN SYSTEM, a flexible head adjustment system with a central rotatable control knob. The top-end model has two large pads to the left and right of the re-designed control knob that distribute pressure. The large control knob is made of a two-component mix that grips well and can be perfectly operated when wearing ski gloves.

The classic for optimal fit: Thanks to the plastic control knob at the back of the head the helmet can be adjusted to the head in a flash and will reliably remain where it belongs.

Y-CLIP

ERGOMATIC

A helmet can only protect the wearer as effectively as it stays in its optimal position in case of a fall. The retention of the two under-ear straps plays a crucial part in this. ALPINA’s “Y-Clip” system guarantees optimal adjustment with millimeter-accuracy – easily and in a matter of seconds.

Proven a hundred-thousand-fold and used in all ALPINA ski helmets: Our famous strap buckle with a red push button and multi-step automatic locking mechanism. ERGOMATIC can be operated when wearing ski gloves – the strap can be loosened while using the ski lift and tightened again before the downhill run – and is prevented from opening on its own in a crash.

HELMET COMFORT

VENTING SYSTEM Ventilation openings in the helmet shell very efficiently prevent heat from building up and ensure the temperature inside is controlled perfectly. ALPINA helmets use the Venturi effect to make air circulation as effective as possible. How does the effect, which was named after its discover, Giovanni Battista Venturi, work? Simply put, when a tube narrows and then widens again, air will flow through the narrower section faster. If another tube is connected to the narrow section, the negative pressure will suck air out of this tube. ALPINA engineers use this â&#x20AC;&#x153;jet effectâ&#x20AC;? to draw air into the forehead area to warm up the inside of the helmet. It is also used to allow air to escape again at the back of the helmet.

AIRSTREAM CONTROL Further airstream regulation features the AIRSTREAM CONTROL. Ventilation openings of the helmet can be opened and closed by a sliding mechanism. Perfect climate around your head is guaranteed.

Especially the head acts as a veritable “heat exchanger.” That’s why ALPINA ski helmets equipped with CHANGEABLE INTERIOR allow you to quickly remove the interior lining, hand-wash it in tepid soap water, let it dry and simply insert it again.

NECKWARMER New in the 2013/14 winter season: ALPINA’s NECKWARMER. The neck warmer is pulled down low at the back of the helmet and consists of a comfortable, soft micro-fleece material. This “heat collar” also prevents the neck from being hit by air draft at high speed and Siberian temperatures. Thanks to its clever construction there are no pressure points.

SNOW GOGGLE TECHNOLOGIES Snow goggles have a crucial influence on whether or not the wearer has fun on the slopes. Fogged lenses, a pushed-down nose, pressure points on the forehead, sunglasses or goggles that slip out of place, or are too small or too large, can all be factors that interfere with wearing pleasure. Alpina technologies reduce all interfering factors for optimum skiing enjoyment.

AIRFRAME VENTING

AIRFRAME VENTING is the name of the intelligent frame venting system in ALPINA snow goggles. Vents at the side and bottom use the so-called “Venturi effect” in which the air is accelerated as it would be in a jet and practically aspirated into the goggles’ interior. After all, air flow is the most effective means available to prevent fogging of the interior lens. The air is routed through channels in such a way that no air draft can cause eye irritation. The air that has been warmed up inside the goggles flows out of them again through vents at the top – and directly into the corresponding vents in the ski helmet.

HINGE BAND

The spherically curved thermal double lens provides clearly improved panoramic vision. In addition, the enlarged interior volume improves thermal management inside the goggles. And THERMOBLOCK, THERMOBARRIER plus FOGSTOP effectively prevent fogging of the goggles.

Our snow goggles featuring HINGE BAND technology don’t have the goggle strap attached directly to the frame but to movable plastic hooks on the outside of the frame. This construction provides even better fit of the goggles – especially when they’re worn with a ski helmet.

Ski helmets typically have very smooth surfaces. When the skier makes dynamic movements on a trail with moguls or in open terrain conventional goggle straps can easily move out of place, unlike goggle straps using SKID GRIP technology: The special rubber coating on the inside keeps the goggles from slipping.

ALPINA snow goggles with 180+ VIEW have a larger field of vision than the 180 degree field prescribed by the CE standard. Premium protection should not only be available to the head and the eyes. Therefore, complementing its product range by protectors for the spine was a logical choice by Alpina. The material of our protectors passes any acid test. It immediately returns to its original shape after deformations, doggedly resists repeated impacts in the same area, and absorbs 90 % of the impact force. The kinetic elasticity gives our light-weight protectors unrivaled comfort.

All Alpina protectors as of the 2014/15 season use a new type of foam that slims down the protector construction by 12 mm. As a result, all protectors offer more freedom of movement and flexibility with no loss in quality.
