EPITOME OF EXCELLENCE

EPITOME OF EXCELLENCE

MAGIC OF A CARING TOUCH The journey of Dr. Zulekha Daud, Founder and Chairperson, Zulekha Healthcare Group, has been truly inspirational. THERE IS COMPASSION OR PERHAPS EVEN A MANTRA IN DR. ZULEKHA’S BRAND OF CARE, WHICH HAS BENEFITTED COUNTLESS PEOPLE OVER THE PAST FIVE DECADES, LEAVING A LASTING IMPACT IN THE REGION. IN HER OWN WORDS: “BEYOND THE TECHNOLOGY, BESIDES THE SPECIALISTS, THERE IS SOMETHING MORE – THE MAGIC OF A CARING TOUCH.” IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS PHILOSOPHY, AND HER OBVIOUS CHARISMA AND COMMITMENT TO QUALITY, THAT SHE IS AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN AS ‘MAMA ZULEKHA’. IN FACT, THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THE GROUP HAS NOW REACHED THE PINNACLE OF EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE, THANKS LARGELY TO DR. ZULEKHA’S STRONG ETHIC OF COMPASSION. The journey started in the early 1960s when Dr. Zulekha Daud came to the UAE after completing her medical degree from the Government Medical College in Nagpur, India. It was her father, Sadiq Vali, who advised her to go to the Gulf. Choosing the UAE over a lucrative career in the UK, she helped people in deep need of medical treatment. During those days the UAE was a vast expanse of desert without any electricity; medical facilities were rudimentary to say the least. But despite unfavourable conditions, Dr. Zulekha decided to stay on and serve the people with a rare display of selflessness. Since there were no hospitals in those days, she travelled door-to-door to attend to her patients. With her dedicated service, she was able to capture the hearts of nationals and expatriates alike. “What I did was nothing greater than the need for medical attention. I borrowed strength from the overwhelming need of the people in this country,” she explains. Even today Dr. Zulekha has the same spirit and passion to serve people suffering from a broad range of medical problems. Although these days her involvement is largely administrative, the 77-year-old is consumed by her abiding love for her vocation. Having single-handedly elevated service to mankind to a new level, Dr. Zulekha is now

synonymous with care and compassion in the UAE. The arduous journey of the country’s first lady doctor represents a story of strength and determination, and serves as an inspiration to women and countless others. About women, Dr. Zulekha says, “Being a mother is a great feeling. It is an emotion of care. As a rule of thumb, women tend to nurture and love more than others. They empathise, they give, they feel – which makes them motherly. Even as a little girl, I knew I wanted to care and give comfort to society, so I grew up to become a doctor, and with it came my identity.” Dr. Zulekha started practicing from her clinic in Sharjah in 1964. Braving hard times, with just a bag and a few basic amenities (there were no nurses or assistants), she dedicated herself to the women who needed her services. Some cases came from faraway places, but she treated one and all. Her biggest reward was to see the women relieved of their labour anxieties, holding the newborns in their laps. In 1992, Dr. Zulekha realised her dream with the establishment of Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah, followed by a medical centre in Dhaid. The year 2005 saw the establishment of a second hospital in Dubai. The 79 -bed multi-specialty hospital has since proved to be a boon for the residents

of Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Mirdiff. The hospitals represent Dr. Zulekha’s personality, underlined by care and compassion. Regarded as the Zulekha spirit, it can be found in the doctors and staff at all times. Under her eminent leadership, Zulekha Healthcare Group is now one of the largest private healthcare networks in the Gulf. With more than 1800 personnel, including over 300 qualified doctors, staff nurses and a host of paramedical staff, the Group offers comprehensive healthcare that is accessible to anyone in need of medical attention, delivered through two multispecialty hospitals, three medical centres and three pharmacies. Awards and accolades have been heaped on her in recognition of her services. Dr. Zulekha has been voted as the Gulf’s most powerful Indian women by Arabian Business Power. She was also included in the top 10 of the most influential Indians in the Gulf by Arabian Business Power list. Year on year Dr. Zulekha is featured and honoured on the Top Indian Leaders list by Forbes Middle East. Every year, Zulekha Hospitals, under her leadership, have been supporting various corporate community initiatives in the UAE, including Beat Diabetes of Landmark Group, Think Pink Initiative of Joy Alukkas, and Terry Fox Run.

Dr. Zulekha is the winner of the International Women’s Day Excellence Award by ‘Dhwani’, the New Global Indian Excellence Award, and the Lifetime Achievement – Healthcare Award for her iconic leadership and outstanding contribution to the industry, presented to her at the Power Brands Hall of Fame 2012. She was recently bestowed with a Gr8! Women Award for her outstanding contribution in the healthcare industry and ‘Outstanding Contribution of an Individual to the Middle East Healthcare Industry’ at the Arab Health Awards. In the same year, Zulekha Hospital (Dubai and Sharjah) received the Dubai Quality Award from Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and President of DIFC, for emphasising quality healthcare in the region. DHA honoured the Zulekha Hospital and Medical Centre (Dubai) in the accreditation ceremony for continuous cooperation towards providing high quality medical care for the population of Dubai. This award was received from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council. Dr. Zulekha firmly believes in the importance of good education. This is evident from her active involvement in several charitable causes and societal works despite her hectic engagements. She established a charitable trust under the name of ZED Vocational and Training Centre in 2004, mainly providing education to needy

segments of society in an unprivileged area of Nagpur. The trust is running a college in a deprived area of Nagpur, where there are no educational institutes. The college is providing courses in commerce, science, technology and management. In 2006, ZED kindergarten was established for nursery, KG I and KG II classes. Besides providing computers for IT courses, it imparts education free of cost to poor students. Moreover, taking her brand of care to a place where people are bereft of basic medical amenities, Zulekha Group established Alexis Hospital in Nagpur to meet the medical needs of the local communities. These are just some of the endeavours of Dr. Zulekha, who believes in contributing to society by empowering it with knowledge. Key projects undertaken by Dr. Zulekha Trust for social and humanitarian causes during the last four years include blood donation camps, contribution of common medicines and surgical accessories, cleanliness drives in slum areas, and supporting an institution dedicated to the well-being of mentally challenged children. Over the years, Dr. Zulekha has helped build closer relations between the overseas Indian community and the country of her birth, India. She has initiated a book donation drive in the UAE, where a huge collection of books on various subjects is collected and sent to academic libraries to benefit students. Poor students in India are helped through educational scholarships,

books, etc. This helps to maintain the growth of human resources with the support of establishments run by overseas Indians. Dr. Zulekha Daud, along with Metito International, also supported the initiative of providing clean drinking water to schools located in disadvantaged areas of Nagpur. This included a complete revamp of water accessing and storage utilities at schools. Dr. Zulekha comments: “My motto in life has been very simple. I do my best and let the rest find its place. I am flexible in my progress. I am open to new ideas. I appreciate growth and I admire humility. I think the biggest success comes when we allow ourselves to be large enough to accept when we have been wrong. To move forward with learning is better than only moving forward and not understanding the lessons along the way. Times change, circumstances change, people change; how you change with it is what makes or breaks you.” It is obviously an arduous task to abbreviate Dr. Zulekha’s profile. But she is arguably the highest woman achiever in the UAE from the Indian community. As the founder of one of the largest private healthcare networks in the Gulf, she continues to be an epitome of what a woman can achieve through sheer grit and determination, and of course, a lot of courage and perseverance.

YOUR HEALTHCARE EXPERTS THE PATIENT/DOCTOR RELATIONSHIP IS AT THE VERY HEART OF WHAT THE ZULEKHA BRAND STANDS FOR, BUT THE GROUP HAS NOT LOST SIGHT OF THE TRANSFORMATION THAT THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING. OWNING TWO MULTISPECIALTY HOSPITALS, THREE MEDICAL CENTRES AND A PHARMACY NETWORK THROUGHOUT THE UAE, AS WELL AS A RECENTLY LAUNCHED TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN INDIA, THE ZULEKHA HEALTHCARE GROUP IS FOCUSING ON COMBINING THE VERY LATEST TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND FAMILIARITY IT HAS OF THE LOCAL MARKETPLACE, AS MANAGING DIRECTOR TAHER SHAMS AND COCHAIRPERSON ZANUBIA SHAMS EXPLAIN.

CHARTING A NEW COURSE “This is really about doing something as a Group we have not done before. To expand our facilities in a state-ofthe-art way, expanding both our knowledge and understanding of how things are being done and finding newer ways of doing them; newer perspectives on how management works, on how customer service works, on how you blend technology, because it is a vital part of healthcare and you can’t escape that, but you also blend that with the human experience,” says Zanubia. “We keep an eye on the technology and on the human experience and ensure that one does not overwhelm the other. We have been consistently rewarded by our patients for keeping that mix.” With the UAE’s healthcare sector growing in double digits over the last few years, the Zulekha Group has transformed into an influential player in the tertiary care segment, placing in motion a massive expansion plan across its facilities in Sharjah and Dubai. The brand expanded its Sharjah hospital considerably in 2010 followed by another extension in 2016, adding more floors to the facility and 50 beds, while its Dubai hospital is nearly tripling capacity from its current 120,000ft 2 to 360,000ft 2. Lessons from Dr. Zulekha’s medical career in the UAE are the bedrock of the Group, but much of its growth has also been steered by her two able lieutenants, Taher and Zanubia, Dr. Zulekha’s son-in-law and daughter, who now lead the charge. Under their leadership, Zulekha Healthcare Group has evolved from a primary healthcare provider to tertiary care provider. It is now turning to court bigger disciplines within the healthcare segment.

“If you look at Zulekha’s history, that’s how we grew,” points out Taher. “We started off with primary care, then secondary, and then tertiary. Now of course we have passed tertiary level care and are introducing an oncology centre, a radiology centre, and so on. We already have in place a cardiac and bariatric centre of excellence and have achieved expertise in fields such as nephrology and urology. Now we are talking about super tertiary or quaternary care, geriatric care and rehabilitation.” Much of Zulekha’s growth has been organic, and it will continue to remain so in the years to come due to the potential that the UAE market offers. “We still feel there is a lot of potential for growth (in our facilities),” says Zanubia. “We’ve built up certain competencies there and the new expanded facilities enhance these. For example, to open our centre for oncology, we have built a lot of competencies in our lab services, radiology services, and in our surgical specialties.” Zulekha’s focus on the local market, however, has not meant that it has limited its presence elsewhere. The Group opened Alexis Multispecialty Hospital, a 200-bed tertiary care hospital, in the Indian city of Nagpur in November 2016, offering specialised care for the local population. Zulekha’s expansion into the Indian market came after the management saw a strong business case. “We thought that since our asset base was overly exposed only in the UAE, and we didn’t have alternative exposure anywhere else, India was a good choice,” explains Zanubia. All of the profits from the Group’s UAE hospitals have always been ploughed back into business in various forms. “Whatever we generate from the existing business/ hospitals goes back to the hospitals and is used for upgrades and other things. There are no other thoughts in our minds, such as investing in real estate, getting into a restaurant business or going into retail. We are focused on reinvestment and year-onyear we allocate our profits for biomedical equipment, upgrading our old equipment, upgrading facilities, and so on. It all goes back to the hospitals, and that of course brings in returns,” says Taher.

This measured growth strategy is clearly one taken by choice and the management team are committed to it. Any further growth or expansion will be scrutinized to ensure clear business potential. “We do want every endeavour to be profitable and we are not interested in expanding something in the hope that it will turn out alright,” says Zanubia. “What we look for (when expanding) is if there is a demographic support for development and what we could do that is not already being done there. “Manpower is a significant concern. We really want to set up in Fujairah, but can we take the doctors there or will doctors be willing to travel? What will be the costs? Can the people there afford the prices charged? So there are so many things we look at, and because we have not yet gotten into private equity we are not sitting on those types of funds, so there is a profit imperative on all money we spend. “It all goes back to the building blocks. Competencies need to be built up. The mentality is to build things slowly; to not just buy widely, but to utilise every asset and to not compromise on an asset. If an asset needs to be purchased, it needs to be purchased, but then it also needs to be used.” After all, to build and to do so steadily is one important lesson that both Taher and Zanubia have learnt from Dr. Zulekha.

“WE KEEP AN EYE ON THE TECHNOLOGY AND ON THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE AND ENSURE THAT ONE DOES NOT OVERWHELM THE OTHER. WE HAVE BEEN CONSISTENTLY REWARDED BY OUR PATIENTS FOR KEEPING THAT MIX.”

A JOURNEY FOR BEST QUALITY

A JOURNEY FOR BEST QUALITY

A JOURNEY TOWARDS QUALITY THE ZULEKHA HEALTHCARE GROUP CAN TRACE ITS ROOTS BACK TO 1964 WHEN ITS FOUNDER, DR. ZULEKHA DAUD, MOVED FROM HER NATIVE TOWN IN INDIA TO SHARJAH, UAE, IN ORDER TO PURSUE HER DREAM OF SERVING PEOPLE IN NEED AND PROVIDING AFFORDABLE MEDICAL FACILITIES TO ALL.

Zulekha Hospital

From a young medical graduate to a practicing physician serving patients from all walks of life, Dr. Zulekha soon became a household name. After years of dedicated service, Zulekha Hospital was established in Sharjah in 1992. It started off as a 30-bed hospital with basic facilities for gynecology, obstetrics, surgery, medicine and pediatrics. Today, the Zulekha Healthcare Group includes two multidisciplinary hospitals in Dubai and Sharjah, as well as one diagnostic centre, three UAE medical centres and three pharmacies. Another recent addition is the Alexis Multispecialty Hospital in Nagpur, India. The Group has contributed greatly to the local healthcare industry in recent years, setting new benchmarks in ongoing medical education programmes for the entire Gulf region with its regular interactive workshops and seminars on various medical and surgical topics. PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLBEING With a vision to be the best for specialist and integrated care, delivering the finest outcomes for all of its patients, Zulekha Hospital Sharjah is a full-fledged, multi-disciplinary resource with out-patient and in-patient facilities. What started off as a 30-bed set up with basic facilities for gynecology, obstetrics, surgery, medicine and pediatrics in 1992, today boasts 150 in-patient beds spread out over an area of 240,000ft 2. First-class integrated care sees all health and care providers at Zulekha Hospital Sharjah working together seamlessly for the benefit of the patient. This means that patients receive care not only in an appropriate and consistent manner, but also in a friendly, compassionate environment that promotes health and wellbeing. Zulekha Hospital Dubai is a 79-bed hospital established in 2004, offering both in-patient and out-patient care, covering a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. Its aim is to treat patients as individuals; to understand their needs and fulfil their expectations of expert and compassionate care in a clean, safe, comfortable and friendly hospital. Those who place their wellbeing in the care of Zulekha Hospital Dubai can be confident that it has the expertise and facilities to look after them through every stage of their care, from screening to diagnostics and onto the very latest

treatments. The hospital is recognised throughout Dubai for achieving exceptional outcomes for patients. In 2016, Zulekha Hospital Dubai has also been recognised as a Centre of Excellence for its surgical weight-loss programme and outstanding management of morbidly obese patients by the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). Both Sharjah and Dubai hospitals are specialised in the following key services: Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, ICU, Dialysis, Advanced Radiology & Laboratory Services, Minimal Invasive Surgeries, Bariatric Surgeries, Joint Replacement Surgeries, and, at the present time in Sharjah only, Lasik Eye Procedures. The Zulekha Healthcare Group has invested in state-of-the-art modular operating theatres in Sharjah and Dubai, ensuring the finest medical care at all times. The Group also has recently launched a new facility in Nagpur, India – the Alexis Multispecialty Hospital. Created to serve the entire central India community by providing the highest quality of medical care, this new hospital has 200 beds and features multiple departments, including Cardiac Sciences, ENT, Orthopedics, Joint Replacement & Arthroscopy, Neurosciences, Pediatrics & Neonatology, Internal Medicine, Trauma Services, Urology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Minimal Invasive Surgery. Alongside these specialties, the hospital extends its services to provide acrossthe-board Medical and Surgical Oncology

& Radiotherapy, Interventional Radiology, Preventive Medicines and Critical Care (CCU, ICU, NICU, SICU). Alexis Hospital will also have a comprehensive Organ Transplant Unit in the near future. EXPANSION FUELS QUALITY Recent expansion projects in both Dubai and Sharjah have seen the Group invest significantly in new facilities and technology. The Sharjah hospital has enjoyed not only extensive renovation, but also the addition of new floors, which has added an extra 50 beds to the facility. The Group has also acquired additional space in Dubai, bringing the total floor space up to 300,000 ft². Taher Shams, Managing Director of the Zulekha Healthcare Group, explained: “The Group has strived to offer the best in terms of services to our customers, and we have now opened an Excellence Centre in our

Dubai facility where we will conduct research into oncology, diabetes and cardiology, to name but a few.” The Group is undertaking clinical research in diabetes and oncology in collaboration with the Dubai government and several international pharmaceutical companies. It is also in talks with the University of California, San Francisco, to undertake research in oncology. Furthermore, Zulekha Healthcare Group is working on several other initiatives, not only locally but also in India. It is, for instance, actively pursuing medical tourism in the region, while working towards providing a world-class standard that is in line with the aims and objectives of the UAE. The Group is working closely with NEXtCARE too, which specialises in providing complete health insurance management and third party administration services. With access to the hospital’s real time data, NEXtCARE will help to reduce the waiting period of receivables, which is now as long as 30 days to six months. “By allowing NEXtCARE to access our real time data, we are encouraging more transparency, which is demanded more by patients, doctors and insurance providers. We are taking the lead in being more transparent and accountable,” says Shams. This recent expansion reflects and enhances the medical excellence that the Zulekha Healthcare Group is renowned for. The patient experience will be significantly improved, while staff will enjoy a better environment to work in, enabling them to provide the best care possible.

REIMBURSEMENT AGENCIES’ EFFORTS CAN ENRICH PHARMACY BENEFIT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS IN THE REGION

A

dvancing health information technologies and elevated demands for prescription drugs continue to intensify the pressure on reimbursement agencies for delivering stellar pharmacy benefits to plan members. With pharmacy representing such a critical component of healthcare delivery from clinical and economic perspectives, it is essential that reimbursement agencies exercise high levels of due diligence in pharmacy benefit management to ensure proper balance of quality clinical care, sufficient access, and optimal cost-efficiency in the delivery of such benefits. Reimbursement agencies’ pharmacy benefit management platform specializes in the management of prescription benefits, focusing on reducing unnecessary drugs and medical costs while optimizing drug use to enhance patient health. Pharmacy benefit management schemes comprise a hierarchy of operational, network, technical, financial, and clinical protocols proven to reduce drug and medical costs while enhancing healthcare quality. Pharmacy benefit management platforms are designed to harness best business practices, clinical guidelines and health information technologies to help equip reimbursement agencies with the knowledge, strategies, and safeguards to drive a well-informed pharmacy benefit selection process and, inevitably, a better-aligned pharmacy benefit management– reimbursement agency relationship. One of the pillars of pharmacy benefit management scheme is the Drug Utilization Review ( DUR ) program that plays a key role in helping managed healthcare systems understand, interpret, and improve the prescribing, administration, and use of medications. Drug Utilization Reviews (DUR), also referred to as Drug Utilization Evaluations (DUE) or Medication Utilization Evaluations (MUE), are defined as an authorized, structured, ongoing review of healthcare provider prescribing, pharmacy doctors/pharmacist dispensing, and patient use of medication. DURs involve a comprehensive review of patients› prescription and medication data before, during, and after dispensing to ensure appropriate medication decision making and positive patient outcomes. Drug Utilization Review ( DUR ) programs are further classified into three categories: Prospective - evaluation of a patient›s therapy before medication is dispensed; Concurrent - ongoing monitoring of drug therapy during the course of treatment; and Retrospective - review of therapy after the patient has received the medication. All the stakeholders within the healthcare ecosystem have unique advantages at different levels from the pharmacy benefits programs. The stakeholders include regulators, public – patients, pharmacies – healthcare providers and reimbursement agencies. Regulators have accumulated data and public health information and are able to establish advanced healthcare environment at low cost. Enhanced

patient safety and clinical outcomes are one of the best takeaways for the general public – patients. Pharmacies and healthcare providers are able to provide clinical decision support based on evidence-based methods, and also able to receive automatic alerts on drug interactions, duplication, over dosage and other safety issues. Reimbursement agencies are able to have an electronic format real-time submission and preauthorization while providing better customer service and provider relations. In light of unrelenting cost pressures and with increasing complexity of clinical programs and management, reimbursement agencies will undoubtedly continue to rely on the resources and expertise of Pharmacy Benefit Management. The key to ensuring optimal implementation of Pharmacy Benefit Management program is a stronger understanding of industry trends, keen awareness of Pharmacy Benefit Management business practices and effective strategies to protect reimbursement agency’s best interests. The end-result is the promotion of a rewarding Pharmacy Benefit Management and, ultimately, a betterquality, value-driven pharmacy benefit program for the reimbursement agency and its plan members. Such concerted efforts among reimbursement agencies can help drive further transformation within the industry, whereby Pharmacy Benefit Management systems that exemplify key principles of alignment, transparency, business integrity, and clinical innovation can rise to lead this industry into the future.

Zulekha Hospital is proud to be able to offer world-class neonatal care right here in the UAE. We ensure that parents can visit more frequently and stay closer to their child. THE ORTHOPAEDICS CENTRE SPECIALISES IN CASES LIKE FRACTURES, DEFORMITIES AND ARTHRITIS

GENERAL AND LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY CENTRE The Department of General and Laparoscopic Surgery at Zulekha Hospital is properly equipped for all general surgical elective and emergency cases. The primary goal of the department is to provide a comprehensive array of surgical procedures using minimal access techniques with fewer post-surgical complications and faster patient recovery. It is a unique facility that provides the highest quality treatment and patient care, with state-of-the-art operating theatres and high-end ICU back-up. Our aim is to provide efficient treatment procedures that make the hospitalisation process easier for patients. Minimal Access Surgery Minimal Access Surgery is carried out with one or more small incisions instead of a large incision. The surgeon examines and operates on the area in question by viewing magnified images projected on a video screen. When a telescope is used to operate on the abdomen, the procedure is called laparoscopy. When used on the chest, the procedure is called thoroscopy, and when used on joints it is called arthroscopy. Type of Surgery Done Laparoscopically Most abdominal surgical procedures can be done laparoscopically. In some cases, there are other factors that might make it possible to do the surgery laparoscopically. The patient should discuss this with the surgeon to make a final decision about the laparoscopic possibilities. For many diseases in the abdomen requiring surgery a high percentage of cases can be carried out this way.

Advantages There are many advantages for patients undergoing keyhole surgery when compared to an open procedure: • Reduced blood loss: Reduces the chance of needing a blood transfusion. • Smaller incision: Reduces pain and short recovery time. • Less pain: Less medication. • Reduced infections: Due to reduced exposure of internal organs to possible external contaminants, risk of accruing infections is reduced. • Relatively small scar: Since the keyhole surgery involves a small opening, it leaves a relatively small scar on the body. • Shorter recovery. • Quick ambulation. • Quick resumption of diet. • Shorter hospital stay. • Quicker return to normal activities. • Less impairment of pulmonary function. • Less suppression of the immune system. Though the procedure times are slightly longer, the hospital stay is shorter, with patients being discharged often within two days, which leads to a faster return to routine life. BARIATRIC SURGERY CENTRE Zulekha Hospital Dubai has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence for its surgical weight loss programme and outstanding management of morbidly obese patients by the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). The IFSO endorses institutions and surgeons as Centres of Excellence (CEO) worldwide to improve the overall quality of management for patients undergoing bariatric and metabolic surgery, has so far

STAY POSITIVE recognised six medical facilities across the GCC. Most weight loss programmes are based on a combination of diet, behaviour modification, and regular exercise. Nevertheless, published scientific papers report that these methods do not help resolve morbid obesity because they fail to help people maintain weight loss. In fact, more than 90% of people regain the weight they lose within a few years of treatment. Several factors can contribute to weight gain. Diet and exercise programmes address factors that can be modified such as lifestyle and behaviour. However, because these methods fail to help people achieve and maintain a healthier weight, a strong link between a genetic makeup (which we’re born with) and obesity are postulated. Obesity surgery has evolved dramatically over the last decade, and today there are many surgical options, including adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric bypass. All of the surgeries are carried out by laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. ORTHOPAEDICS CENTRE Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Surgery is undertaken in a high-tech specialised facility that is designed to provide the best possible results and care to patients. At Zulekha Hospital, we provide a comprehensive range of treatment for patients undergoing trauma and orthopaedic problems. The department is correctly equipped to successfully treat all cases, such as fractures, deformities and arthritis. Highquality implants are used in surgeries when required, and world-class rehabilitation services are offered to ensure speedy recovery. With the help of advanced arthroscopy procedures, surgery can be carried out as a day care procedure, which makes it less painful and promotes early recovery. Services • Management of different fractures • Management of different deformities • Spine care and surgeries • Hip and knee joint replacement • Arthroscopy and reconstructive surgery • Paediatric trauma and orthopaedics

Emergency The Emergency Department is well equipped with up-to-the-minute facilities to meet all emergencies. The department functions round-the-clock and has highly trained and competent emergency physicians, nursing staff and paramedics, all of whom are dedicated to providing the finest levels of care. Diabetes Management Centre The Diabetes Management Centre deals with diseases that are related to the endocrine organ. Unusual functioning of the endocrine organs causes severe health problems, and our diabetic unit is fully equipped with insulin pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS). Patients have the benefit of a highly trained Diabetes Nurse Educator, just one member of a team that comprises enormously experienced healthcare professionals. Together, they have an unrivalled reputation for solving endocrinological problems. Following are the key problems that we treat in the Endocrinology Department: • Diabetes mellitus and related complications • High cholesterol levels • Thyroid diseases • Obesity • Loss of weight • Hair growth in women • Short stature • Tall stature • Pituitary tumours • Delayed puberty • Early puberty • Delayed onset of periods • Infertility in males • Male dysfunction • Breast development in boys or older males • Small or big testis or absent testis • Darkening of skin

Neurology and Neurosurgery Centre Our fully-fledged Neurology and Neurosurgery Departments provides facilities for the investigation and treatment of diseases affecting the brain, spinalcord, muscles and nerves. These two departments are headed by eminent neurologists and neurosurgeons with vast experience in handling all kinds of brain and spine cases. The Neurosurgery Department plays a vital role in emergency and accident care. There is a superbly equipped Emergency Department and ICU for critical neurosurgical patients. Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology Mental health is an integral part of modern healthcare as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and here at the Zulekha Hospital, located inside the neurosciences block, we have the Department of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology. We have highly trained psychiatrists and clinical psychologists (female) with extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of common mental illnesses. As a hospital, we specialise in diagnosing and treating mental disorders using various psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic methods. At Zulekha Hospital, we specialise in diagnosing and treating a range of mental, emotional and behavioural problems, including the following conditions: • Schizophrenia. • Mood disorders (depression, mania etc.). • Anxiety disorders (accession, phobia, PTSD, etc.). • Personality disorders. • Common childhood and adolescent

mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, poor scholastic performance, etc. • Psycho-geriatric problems, including dementia and various other neuropsychiatric conditions. Radiology Dedicated to imaging services that help to detect and diagnose, this department is equipped with a broad range of stateof-the-art technology, including CT, MRI, Mammography, USG, Foetal Scan, 2D and 4D Doppler, and a digital x-ray setup. LASIK SURGERY Lasik is a refractive surgery in which a flap of the corneal surface is raised and a thin layer of underlying tissue is removed using a laser. It can correct common vision problems (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia) to reduce dependence on prescription eyeglasses and/or contact lenses. The advantages of this type of surgery include: • Around 96% of patients will have their desired vision after Lasik. • Lasik is associated with very little pain due to the numbing drops that are used. • Vision is corrected almost immediately or by the day after Lasik. • No bandages or stitches are required after Lasik. • Adjustments can be made years after Lasik to further correct vision if changes occur as the patient ages. • Following Lasik, most patients have a dramatic reduction in eyeglass or contact lens dependence, and many patients no longer need them at all.

CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT OF COMPASSION

DR. ZULEKHA DAUD RECEIVES THE AWARD FOR TOP 10 BUSINESSES AT THE SHARJAH ECONOMIC EXCELLENCE AWARDS FOR ZULEKHA HOSPITALS

THE COMPANY WITH A HEART ZULEKHA HEALTHCARE GROUP IS A MULTI-AWARD WINNING ORGANISATION WITH A COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING A PERSONAL APPROACH AND THE VERY HIGHEST QUALITY CARE. Zulekha Hospital is renowned for its ability to innovate within the healthcare industry and continues to endorse the ‘power of prevention’. The Group has undertaken a number of outreach programmes, promoting awareness and providing primary education to local communities in a quest to help everyone stay healthy. The focus of these activities is always a celebration of the ‘spirit of compassion’, which is offered through several units of the Group, be it through health talks or by partnering corporate entities in spreading the message of wellbeing. Some of the most visible initiatives include over 160 education leaflets, dedicated to different ailments and designed in simple language; in excess of 300 different organisations where free health check-ups have been conducted; partnering more than 100 corporate entities to spread the message of wellbeing; and over 10 lifestyle related activities that have become major co-branded campaigns.

This commitment to delivering important messages based around the ‘prevention’ of illness over the past two decades has not gone unnoticed either. Zulekha Hospital has, for instance, received the Dubai Chamber CSR Award (for its commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability), the ‘Patient Satisfaction’ award from Medigo, and the ‘Unilever MENA Sustainable Living Plan’ award. TRIBUTE TO INDIA

IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES ZULEKHA HOSPITAL TAKES PRIDE IN ASSESSING REGIONAL CHALLENGES WHILE ATTENDING TO THE HEALTH CONCERNS OF PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE GCC REGION AND THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT. THE GROUP’S BLUEPRINT FOR ASSESSABLE CARE HAS RECEIVED BACKING IN THE FORM OF FINANCIAL AID FROM IFC, THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY ORGANISATION THAT SELECTS ONLY THE MOST POTENT PROJECTS AFTER STRINGENT AUDITING PROCESSES. BACKED BY IFC, THE GROUP HAS EXPANDED OPERATIONS IN CENTRAL INDIA THROUGH ALEXIS HOSPITAL, WHICH IS POSITIONED AS A MULTI-SPECIALITY HEALTHCARE UNIT. THIS HOSPITAL CATERS TO THE CENTRAL INDIAN REGION AROUND NAGPUR, WHICH HAS TRADITIONALLY LACKED HEALTHCARE UNITS PROVIDING ACCESS TO MULTIPLE SPECIALITIES WITH QUALITY HEALTHCARE UNDER ONE ROOF. Dr Zulekha Daud, founder of the Zulekha Healthcare Group, believes in the empowerment of women and underprivileged students through education. As a result of this belief, she launched ZED Vocational Training and General Shikshan Sansthat (ZEDVTGSS) in 2008 in East Nagpur, a locality considered somewhat backward with no quality educational institutions. ZED is recognised by the Minority Commission and imparts courses in education, science, commerce and technology streams.

The single-minded mission of ZED is to provide quality education with a focus on all-round development, supported by stateof-the-art infrastructure at nominal cost. Management scholarships are provided to needy and deserving students to ensure they are not deprived of the finest education possible. Highly qualified staff, in-sync with industry standards and requirements, ensure that all students are well-equipped and groomed to industry accepted standards. Plans are afoot to add more education streams in the near future, with a focus on

preparing students with skills and knowledge relevant to industry needs and demands. Sincere efforts in this regard have already been initiated: a large number of students from the first batch in the Commerce, Science and Technology streams have been placed in leading organisations, including three placements in Dubai - a major achievement for the stream in its early years.

PINK IT NOW CAMPAIGN FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

TERRY FOX RUN

WALK FOR AUTISM

GOOD HEALTH IS WITHIN YOUR REACH WELLNESS CAMPAIGNS Over the past six years, Zulekha Hospital has been successfully leading dedicated health awareness campaigns throughout the UAE, including ‘Pink It Now’, ‘Smear, Don’t Fear’, ‘Watch Your Back’, and ‘No More Excuses!’ In line with Zulekha Healthcare Group’s CSR objectives, the campaigns are led by the hospital in association with government bodies and valued partners, all of whom relate to the cause of spreading awareness of deadly diseases and, in doing so, positively affecting the lives of people throughout the region. All campaigns are approved by Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH).

SMEAR, DON’T FEAR In 2015, Zulekha Hospital developed ‘Smear, Don’t Fear’, a cervical cancer awareness campaign that was designed to encourage regular checks and to educate women about the symptoms, risks and prevention of the second most common cancer, which affects hundreds of thousands of women worldwide. WATCH YOUR BACK Zulekha Hospital has launched this health awareness campaign to challenge the taboos surrounding colorectal (colon) cancer and to help save lives across the UAE. In association with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Zulekha Hospital developed

the ‘Watch Your Back’ campaign to stress the importance of regular checks for early detection, and to educate the wider public about the screening process that can eliminate the disease.

OVER THE PAST SIX YEARS, ZULEKHA HOSPITAL HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY LEADING DEDICATED HEALTH AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS THROUGHOUT THE UAE, INCLUDING ‘PINK IT NOW’, ‘SMEAR, DON’T FEAR’, ‘WATCH YOUR BACK’, AND ‘NO MORE EXCUSES!’

PINK IT NOW Zulekha Hospital’s ‘Pink It Now’ campaign advocates early detection and subsequent reduction of deaths from breast cancer across the UAE. Dr Pamela Munster, renowned cancer expert from the University of California in San Francisco, has been championing this cause over the past six years. The programme is undertaken in collaboration with associations such as The Pink Caravan, a FoCP initiative that has been raising awareness about breast cancer since 2011, highlighting the importance of early detection and regular check-ups, whilst also dispelling the innumerable myths that surround the disease. NO MORE EXCUSES ‘No More Excuses’, an initiative led by Zulekha Hospitals, is a community-based campaign that is dedicated to promoting the need for people to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. Some of the biggest factors contributing to the early onset of heart attacks and strokes are stress due to overwork and everyday anxieties, particularly in situations where

exercise and leisure are largely ignored, as is the importance of downtime and the ability to calm the mind. Compounding these problems are lifestyle inhibitors such as smoking, drinking and eating junk food, which are often resorted to in order to offset stress. Zulekha Hospitals encourage the community to visit their facilities in order to avail themselves of a free appointment with a specialist cardiologist, during which ECG, blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol readings will be taken. Depending on the

person’s body weight and history, the hospital will also offer free weight-loss options. RINGING IN AWARENESS AT THE RECEPTION Our hospitals in Dubai and Sharjah utilise the reception area to welcome patients, not only in a warm and friendly manner, but also to provide awareness, be it in the form of pertinent health initiatives or celebrations. This is a conscious effort to convey compassion beyond medical concerns.
