Zuleika Gallery is delighted to present this exhibition of Drawings and Small Sculpture by Nigel Hall RA.  One of Britain's most distinguished sculptors, this exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to see how both areas of his practice are mutually reinforcing and informed by an unsurpassed sense of  balance and exquisite harmony.   Whether working in two or three dimensions, Halls concerns in his work remain the same - an intense exploration of space, line, mass and geometry.  The drawings are abstract in realisation and the shapes within appear carved into the pictorial space, echoing the forms of his sculpture.  In the same way that Hall's sculpture integrates naturally into the surrounding landscape or architecture,  so the abstract forms of his drawings seem to perfectly occupy the space of the sheet.  In both dimensions the works are defined by an acute sense of line and the careful interplay of light and shadow.  While the sculptures physically have multiple vistas and viewing points, the drawings have an implied multiplicity.  The overlapping of forms in the drawings amplify the work and hint at a realm beyond: with the subtle shifts of tone in the layers of charcoal the visual possibilities are expanded,  In the sculpture it is the transparency of the forms that effectively multiply the viewing possibilities.

It is the exquisite balance of spatial relationships that underpins all of Halls' work. The geometrical forms found in the drawings and sculpture are inspired by Hall's experience of the natural world which is the starting point for all of his work.   In both the drawings and sculpture Hall introduces colour to accent the work - again always masterfully controlled and perfectly judged.  In his recent drawings Hall uses charcoal and acrylic, although the earlier works were realised with gouache.   Born in Bristol in 1943, Hall studied at West of England College of Art, Bristol (1960 – 64) and at the Royal College of Art in London (1964 – 67). Following graduation from the RCA in he spent two years in the United States on a prestigious Harkness Fellowship and travelled between the US, Canada and Mexico till 1969.  In 1971 he returned to the RCA as a tutor until 1974.  From 1974-1981 Hall taught at Chelsea School of Art where he was Principal Lecturer and Head of MA Sculpture.  Nigel Hall’s work is held in many public and private collections in Europe, USA, Asia and Australia including: Tate Gallery, London; MoMa, New York; and Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tokyo.  He has also been commissioned for many large, site-specific works, including a wall-mounted sculpture for entrance to Australian National Gallery in Canberra, a wall-mounted sculpture for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Hiroshima and a free standing sculpture for the Olympic Park in Seoul.
